El Edge Computing permite que los servicios cloud estén muy cerca de los usuarios. Esta cercanía se consigue combinando dos elementos. Por un lado, los servicios se despliegan en nodos de Edge/Cloud que están geográficamente muy cerca del cliente, en muchas ocasiones, en la misma ciudad. Por otro lado, se acortan las distancias gracias al uso de redes de acceso más rápidas, como son la fibra y el 5G.
El Edge hace que los servicios de cloud sean más rápidos, que puedan gestionar mayores volúmenes de tráfico y de dispositivos conectados, a la vez que ofrecen la posibilidad de que los datos del cliente estén físicamente más cerca y seguros. Todo esto sin perder las ventajas del cloud: menores costes y mayor flexibilidad.
El Edge es la siguiente etapa en la evolución de la TI y su convergencia con las redes. Se puede decir que viene a cerrar el gap que existe entre casa del cliente y la nube, acercando las capacidades de computación y almacenamiento al cliente final y ofreciendo lo mejor de los dos mundos: unir las prestaciones de los despliegues locales con la flexibilidad, escalabilidad y eficiencia en costes de la nube.
El Edge potencia las capacidades de la nube, habilitando aplicaciones que hasta ahora no era práctico o posible llevar al cloud, debido a:
requisitos estrictos de latencia (p.e., gaming, realidad aumentada, etc.),
necesidad de procesar altos volúmenes de datos o de alto ancho de banda requerido (p.e., analítica de vídeo),
la necesidad de residencia, seguridad y resiliencia del dato, especialmente en aquellos casos que haya requisitos relacionados con la GDPR (e.g., procesamiento de imágenes médicas o industria 4.0).
Las redes de nueva generación (fibra y 5G) son un habilitador fundamental del edge, ya que potencian y aseguran la materialización de sus ventajas:
Proporcionan la conectividad extremo a extremo que los servicios de edge requieren, en términos de cobertura, fiabilidad, criticidad, capacidad, prioridad o retardo.
Garantizan la baja latencia que habilita los casos que requieren tiempos de respuesta en el rango de pocos milisegundos.
Soportan la densidad de dispositivos necesaria para las aplicaciones IoT.
Facilitan que los desarrolladores puedan acceder a funcionalidades sofisticadas de control de las capacidades de red, mediante APIs.
Generan sinergias y reducciones de costes por la compartición de infraestructuras.
