(00:00):
Trainer of Rich Strike. He's alwayson the mark. Eric read, Good
morning, Eric, Good morning guys, good talking, Good morning man.
Never does it bring that. Ithink that's gonna be the song they play
at my funeral. Man, whatwere you doing and tell me about I
(00:21):
know we talked about it last year. Where were you watching the race?
And were you in the barn orwere you at now? I watched it
in the paddock on the big screen. Uh, you know, just so
that I after the race i'd beable to make my way through the crowd
and talk to the rider. Ihad no idea that you know, it
was gonna end up the way itdid. Wow? What what did?
What was that like? Eric? When when he when he crossed that line,
(00:41):
did you watch him? Did you? Could you see him coming and
say, oh, he's gonna getit. Well? I lost him there
for a little while in the turnwhen I got in that big cluster of
horses. And then I asked afriend of mine, right back the time
they got to the head of thestretch, you know, where were we
in? He said that you onthe rail, you're like fifth or sixth,
And I knew right then we weregoing to have some fun. And
you know, I knew we wasn'tgonna get tired. I just didn't know
(01:02):
what was getting ready to happen next. I thought that was over. Yeah,
well everybody else did, and um, I was just hoping we got
third. And when he ran aroundmessy, Hey, I knew I had
third. Yeah. I kind ofzoned out at that point. And gosh,
it's been an unreal ride. Ibet the last year hadn't, Eric,
it has. It's been a lotof fun and I met a lot
(01:25):
of great people. And you know, there's a lot of stuff that goes
with winning the Derby that you don'trealize. But I wouldn't trade it for
a minute. I'm will tell youthis. You were good for racing because
you're so friendly, you took everyinterview, you took cars, or so
down to earth. You're a regularguy. I mean, you did a
lot for the Kentucky Derby. Tome, in my opinion, I made
it. Yeah, your class, there's no doubt about it. And you
(01:46):
just down home good guy and itmakes a lot of people pull for you,
not that the others. Eric, you know what I mean? Yeah,
I know, Well I think youknow a little change, does you
good? Once in a while, and you know, been some rough times
COVID and all the all the controversies. So I think I think the whole
country needed that. You know what, Richie. Richie did it. All
(02:07):
I did was put the saddle onhim. Yeah, and you went through
a whole lot of adversity yourself andum you you had a fire that just
about took away your whole racing career, your all your horses, and heck
you were able to rebound and winthe Derby. It's got to be a
great story. Oh it was.You know, it was like I tell
(02:29):
people, it was the low ofthe lows, and we've seen the high
the highs, and I you know, it makes you appreciate everything in life
when you go through that, right, And that's why I when Richie one,
I realized, you know how bigthis story was for just for the
average guy like me and the fansout there. And that's why I want
(02:50):
to make him, you know available. I got eight people here to day
watching him on the track. Youknow, we just you were going to
run rich strike then something happened andare you going to run him Saturday?
Yeah? We we're trying to findthe first race back. It's going to
be a hard race no matter what. And you know I didn't want him.
(03:10):
He's gonna eats fresh, he's gonnaI just don't want to exert all
of his energy in one race.So we've tried to find the right spot
for his first race back, andI don't think there's ever a good spot
when you've been laid up for fivemonths, you know, coming off lay
off year, hooking the best horsesin the world that are fit and running
already. So we just our seasonreally should start at the Stephen Foster.
(03:34):
So this is our prep for that. It's his first race of five this
year, and hopefully you know,he'll peek in his second or third start
and in the year the right way. So you've already laid out his whole
year this year, rich Strikes. If things go according to plan, we've
got a good schedule set out wherethe races are spaced out. It's just
a perfect schedule for us. Hejust got to stay healthy and if things
(03:57):
go well, then you know we'relooking forward to a really fun year.
All right, Good deal, Ericread with us. He's the trainer.
Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby shockedAmerica last year, coming from way off
the pace, almost dead last downthe stretch to win the race. All
right, Now, Friday and Saturday. You said you had three horses.
It'll be at Churchill this week, right, Yeah, we're going to try
to run three on Friday, today'sentry day, so we'll have an idea
(04:21):
about twelve if we get all threein or just one or two. But
rich Strike is gonna hopefully run Fridayin the Alashiba Stakes, and we have
two other horses that were entering forFridays, so it could be a busy
day for us. How long isAlashiba Stakes? I mean it's a mile
to sixteen that's perfect for Richie, okay, but it's a good spot for
(04:42):
his first race back. It won'tit won't exhaust him and take all his
energy. He'll have a lively paceand hopefully he can come running if he
catches him, great, If hedoesn't, it sets him up so good
for the next one. All right, Now, what do you really want
him to run in? What? What? What? What? Length?
Mylen a quarter is obviously his bestdistance. You know, he ran good
in all those races last year, including the Breeder's Cup, and he did.
(05:04):
He said, you know, uh, he's a bigger, stronger horse
this year. We just got tostay healthy and if he, uh,
he has a good year, thenhe's gonna he's gonna get He's gonna get
a whole lot of happy days forus, that's for sure. There you
go, you're gonna ride Sunny Leonagain. Yeah, Sonny's coming up from
(05:26):
Florida to riding, and um,we're just getting the party started again.
It's race one instead of the thirdor four flag last year when we got
to this day, but we gotwe got a really nice horse to take
out this year and not many Derbyhorses running four. And I'm so glad
he gets to There. You goread with us on our Hamilton's Hotline on
a trainer of rich Strike. Gotthree more horses coming up this weekend in
(05:49):
Churchill. Explain to people how youget in that race when you said you
hope you get the right draw.Explain to our listeners you got three horses,
you know, Rich Strikes in theAlashiba. Explain the other two and
what they have to go through toget in here. Well, we have
a condition book that's given out weeksin advance and it tells you each race
for that race day, and soyou pick it. You know, you
(06:11):
pick the race that fits your horse, and you enter. What twelve horses
are all that's allowed to run.So if there's twelve entries, unless you
know you're going to get in therace. But if there's more than twelve,
they put them all in a boxand they draw twelve out and the
twelve that are drawn gets run andthe other ones don't. So that's why
we're hoping to get in, butwe just don't know how many are going
to enter in these races. Thealso eligible would be where your horse would
(06:35):
go if he didn't get in,and if someone would scratch, they would
go next in line, right andbring This is what happened to Rich Strike
in the Derby, correct last year, that's correct. You get on what's
called the also elisible, which youknow in case there's a defection for illness
or something, then you know theystill have a chance to run a twelve
horse field because the tracks want torun as many in the race that can
(06:56):
for betting interest and handle and youknow, competitiveness for the race. So
all those things come to play andthey give you and also Elsibie and gosh
you know them. Thank God forthey also eldib where you wouldn't be talking
to me right now. Yeah, there you're right here. Now. Do
you bet the races yourself? Ido not. I didn't even bet on
Richie last year. I was probablythe only one of the thirty guys in
(07:16):
the group that didn't bet on.That's all right. You got a lot
when it was over, right, you got a lot in your heart when
it was over Goidly, No,all right, it's fabulous, Yeah,
it is all right. So tellme this. Have you been to Churchill
in the last two weeks? Haveyou seen the track and everything? Yeah,
I've been up there. Richie hadto work out twice up there,
and he's he's going back today tostay and he'll be up there from now
(07:41):
until Saturday and come home after thederby. Just you know, there's a
lot of stuff and pressed the mediathat are gonna come out and do stories
on him and oh yeah, ohhe'll he'll be there all week. But
yeah, I've been up there andthey've got the place looking good and they're
working on this new paddock. It'sgoing to be wonderful when it's finished.
Stay of the art and so he'sbeen into training center before this all year.
(08:03):
Yeah, he does training all year. Go ahead, Lee, I
mean he's in He's in Mercury, right, He's at Mercury, my training
center, and he stays here allyear and the only time he leaves is
a couple of weeks before a raceto go train at the track. He's
going to run out there. Yougo, all right, have you you
have you looked at the Derby thisyear? Have you looked at all the
horses? I have? I thinkit's a pretty wide open race. There's
(08:26):
not the standout like Epicenter looked likehe was last year. But there's a
lot of quality horses, and um, I think it's going to be a
terrifically run race and number of horsesin there can win it. Really,
you don't think Fote well odds? You think four Tell will be when he
when he runs, I think he'llbe three or four to one. I
don't think there'll be a big favoritein the race this year. I think
(08:48):
they're so competitive. I'd say thefavorite might even be three to one.
Yeah, day, that is interesting. What about Tappitt Trice? That's my
pick? Yeah, I'm a thing. Go ahead, No, you're a
loser. I'm a loser. Goahead, go ahead, Marks, I
say, I just I think thatthe horse still has a lot of improving
(09:09):
to do, and he's a grinder. He'll get the distance. Um,
he's just gonna have to get throughsome traffic. Yeah, I think.
But the other day in the Bluegrass, he stayed closer than he ever has.
And you know, if he takesanother step forward like that, he's
got Toddle have him ready. Andbut I mean, there's so many horses
in there that you could throw adart and it wouldn't surprise me who's gonna
who's gonna win. Let's go backto tapp at Trice that Bluegrass takes.
(09:31):
He got out of the he gotout of the gate on the right way.
He's a little late coming out ofthe gate, obviously, you know
that. Oh he can't be toolate into Derby Canny. No, it's
hard to overcome that. I mean, because you know you saw a rich
strike. He part of the watersat three or four different times to get
through there. And but he brokebutter in the blue Grass, and he's
a lot closer down the back back. So I think they've worked on him,
(09:54):
and I think he's just maturing atthe right time and that's what it
takes. Yeah, the rate,I guess it was the water derby where
he came back and just stormed pastingthe gush stream. That's when I was
like, who was that the onehe came and just blew them away?
Well, that was forte I believeI was at forte. I was thinking
it was okay, yeah it wasforte gus Stream. You're right? Those
Yeah, those two were the Yeah, no doubt those two. So you
(10:16):
don't think it'll be a heavy favoritetoo, I don't. I don't see
a big heavy favorite. I think, you know, three to one something
like that, because there's a numberof horses in there that all looked like
they can win the rate. Hm, that's a good point. That is
so Pleaturer needs to wear his Sundaysuit. He's gonna have some gray suit
on and his tie. Was hegonna be looking in the winter circle with
(10:37):
his gray and yellow on. Hey, I think he's he's got a big
chance. And he taught such agood guy, always was so pleasurable to
me and my crew last year, and um, he walked in the barn
and just quick story. He walkedin the barn at Belmont and came over
to say hi, And he wentover and shook the hands of my employees
and stuff, and they took pictures. And when he walked away, this
(10:58):
man it was pleaturer walk in unkingwhat about me? And they just said,
that's question. What about you?The Kentucky Derby winner? He didn't
win it? You did, right? They didn't care. He's a great
guy, so and I know healways does a good job. But so
to Steve. I mean, Iwon't be surprised as Steve doesn't stick in
(11:20):
there this year. He's kind offlying under the radar right now. And
um man, he's a great horsemanwomen proba many good horses in this race.
I just know I have a hardtime. All right. Let me
ask you this, as Winston hasn'tnever has one to Derby, right,
isn't. It's the only one hehasn't. That that's who you're talking about,
right, Steve, That's who I'mtalking You've asked me something, and
you know he's he's in there againthis year, and he's got a legitimate
horse, great trainer. Yep,he's got his Coxes is doing his on
(11:46):
this one and it is always yep, yep, that's what it is.
Anything else, Eric, you wantto add, you know, I want
to give a shout out to Dianaand those guys in the story Book because
you know last year, those guysthey do so much and I was so
happy last year to get to givethem a shout out. And you know,
all these people going to just enjoyit. It's a great cause.
(12:07):
They change lives and um, youknow, everybody get in there and support
them best they can. And he'stalking about Storybook Farms folks right here and
Auburn Opelika and Eric helps with that. He's so nice to get a video.
You are so good to us herein East Alabama, Erica and West
George. I appreciate you being onthe mark every time we reach out.
Buddy, you're a class act.Well, thank you. That's the privilege
(12:30):
that I've had win in this race, getting to meet people like you all,
and you've treated me so good. And everybody in the media, you
know, took me in there whenI didn't know anything about any of this,
and they've they've handled me with careand it's been the it's been as
good as one of the race.Just being able to talking to meet with
people like you guys. Amen, and I hope you're we know Richie's in.
I hope your other two horses getin and win this weekend. All
(12:52):
right, you, thank you Eric, God bless you buddy. All right,
God bless you guys. You welcome
