Picks and roll, handicapping the hardwoodwith Sixers insider Sean Bernard and Sean Brace.
The ball comes in on the flock, hits trouble zeros. How many
different ways do you have to wingames on the way to a championship?
Tonight, in Game two of theNBA Finals, there was nothing pretty until
(00:21):
o'clock hit triple zeros. They wantedthe Celtics battle testing, and tonight they
get it. The final score inGame two Boston one oh five, Dallas
ninety eight. There it is,and that's how we roll in here.
Hello, everybody, picks and roll. It's been a little bit sham Bernard,
Sean Bracemith, you here talking allthings NBA Finals, Game three going
(00:46):
down this evening in Dallas. Goodafternoon, Sean. How we doing doing
well? I'm excited we finally havesome basketball. Feels like it's been too
long of a layoff in between games, so I've been annoyed by that spread
out schedule, but excited to havesome action back on the court tonight.
Yeah. The NBA, you knowwhat they do. They love to milk
it. It's crazy because I thoughtabout this from the Flyers perspective more more
(01:08):
than the Sixers. And I'm sayingto myself, like, oh my goodness,
could you imagine if the Flyers werestill playing at this point in time,
And how much extra that is fromthe standpoint of just extra money in
the workers pockets, people that goin and serve your beers, popcorn,
(01:30):
SODA's, to the people that are, you know, in the the entertainment
side of it on a nightly basis, to the people that run you know,
the pregame, post game, tothe rate, like just how much
different that is from the standpoint ofthe season comes to an end versus let's
extend this bad boy through four moreseries. And it's crazy to think,
(01:56):
like how much extra money that wouldput in some people's pockets. And that's
what I want, you know,Yeah, And like as much as we
obviously you're talking about sports from theentertainment aspect or from the competition aspect for
desire to win, it is abusiness at the end of the day.
And that's why these teams, theseowners are so intent on making the playoffs,
making deep runs, because it isa ton of extra money that they
(02:16):
do have access to, and that'swhy teams are willing to pay the luxury
tax or go above certain aprons andthose type of things. So there's definitely
a business aspect of this that boththe Mavericks and Celtics are benefiting quite a
bit. Right now, all right, seam Minard, let's do it.
We got a big time game thisevening and it's doward die because if Dallas
(02:37):
loses this game, it's done.Even if they do find a way to
win this game, I still don'tthink that they have enough in the tank
to make this a series. Butyou know, look, hopefully I'm wrong
on that. Hopefully everybody wants aseries. I thought for sure we were
going to get a good six gameseries out of these two teams. It
has not been good, to saythe least from Dallas a side, and
(03:00):
think in the heck, even Bostonstruggled in Game two. We'll get into
the big storyline today, and that'sof course, with Kristaps porzingis his health
and if he's not able to go, what does that mean for the Boston
Celtics. Right now, DraftKings sportsbookis showing Dallas listed as a three point
home favorite. Two thirteen and ahalf is your total and that one up
a half tick essentially on the totalfrom where it opened and then from the
(03:24):
spread perspective, two and a halfis what it opened at. Didn't hang
there very long, came came immediatelydown to one and a half. Money
came in on Boston. We understandwhy. I think it went as low
as one on DraftKings, but nowup to three, and that is all
because of Kristaps Porzingis and his healthbeing up in the air. At this
(03:45):
point in time, I have toask you, though, Sean, because
this team, the Boston Celtics, knows what it takes to win without Porzingis.
I think there were thirty and fivethirty and five without him this season,
and it was like forty eight andfifteen with him something like that.
I saw it on ESPN earlier today. So they know what it takes to
(04:05):
win without Porzingis. And of coursethey went on a three game playoff or
three series playoff run without him.So if he's unable to go tonight,
I get it. On paper,it's a loss, it's absolutely a loss.
But in that locker room is what'sgoing on inside Boston's locker room if
(04:27):
Porzingis cannot play. Yeah, andto be perfectly honest, my outlook on
this is I think there's like zeroChancey plays. I personally think that he
will be done for the series.I know that Boston's gonna do this day
to day dance and try and codeit up like they're doing everything possible,
and I'm sure inis, yeah, they should be, and I'm sure he
is that he is trying to gethealthy. But I would be really shocked
to be stepped back on the flooragain this season, unfortunately for him,
(04:49):
because he has had an incredible season, an incredible stretch, and it's very
important to the Celtics team. There'sno doubt that the Celtics are still a
very good basketball team without Chris tohave Porzingis. But I do think having
Porzingis on the floor is what makesthis Boston team unsolvable. That I do
think without him, there are wayswhere Dallas does have the counters to the
(05:10):
sets that Boston wont to run,the style that they do want to play
with having that guy that is atrue stretch big man that wants to play
five out basketball, shoot from wellbeyond the three point RC, and then
provide the rim protection that does onthe defensive end, that is what really
elevated this team to the clear cutchampionship favorites and best teams in the team
in the NBA. They're still verygood without him, but I think we're
gonna have a fight from here onout all right now, Sean Bernard,
(05:33):
I hate to dive right into it, but when you come over the top
of a social media post and yousay Mavericks by a million tonight, let
me tell you why. Let's Iwant to hear this because I'm curious.
Hell don't believe it. But again, I want you to be right.
I want you to be right.I did not want the Boston Celtics to
win this series. I was fearfulof here where we are. They were
(05:56):
going to be dominating at home Otwo. Heading back to Dallas, You're
gonna have to get some production fromKyrie Irving. I'm not saying that that's
a lost cause I do expect himto play better. But you know,
even myself, Seoan, I wasgetting a little bit caught up in the
atmosphere in the fans and what typeof effect they had with Kyrie Irving.
(06:16):
That's fine. I think there's truthbehind that, but at the end of
the day, the focus should remainon the defensive play by the Celtics guards.
That's why, and you know this, you told me as much.
That's why Kyrie Irving is truly struggling. So where does it change, Why
all of a sudden is Kyrie goingto be able to get it going tonight
(06:38):
or do you have Lucas score ineighty five by himself? Yeah, I
mean for starters, you can't fakedesperation that there's no way to replicate having
your backgendst the wall being down outtoo. And I do think Dallas is
gonna fail those full effects. Ido believe that the players not named Luka
Dancic are going to have better gamestoday that I just refuse to believe that
we'll go on for an entire serieswhere Kyrie is playing as poor as he
(06:59):
has been. There certainly is creditto be handed to Boston how defensively they've
been matching up the size, thelank, the athleticism that they have.
I think not having Porzingis as therim protector does open things up that Kyrie
is going to be in attack modelooking to get to the rim a little
more than he has been to thispoint. He's more been content with the
jump shot and a lot of themid range, and frankly just has not
been able to get to his spotsthere now. I also think that Dallas
(07:21):
benefits quite a bit on their defensiveend by now having a true chance to
play lively in Gafford as more rimprotectors. That yes, Al Horford will
still let it fly from three, but he's not this strikey fear into you
the way that Porzingis has, sothere's more that you can do defensively.
I also think that like there's notas much of a counter in the pick
and pop situations that Dallas is goingto have to defend, it plays to
(07:43):
their strengths a ton to not havethat level of magnitude of a floor spacer.
There a couple of stats for youhere as well. The Mavericks this
season twenty one to twelve against thespread with the lines between plus three and
minus three. They're also thirty nineand twenty four against the spread as favorites
this year. I also wish tofind out this is only the fourth time
all season that the Celtics are notfavorites in a game, so kind of
(08:07):
not a lot to go off froma sample size there, and that is
telling to just how dominant they havebeen. I just don't see this series
being as sweep or over in fourgames. If Dallas is gonna get one,
it feels like tonight. I thinkthe role players respond. I think
Kyrie has a punchback that he's notgonna continue shooting zero for eight from three.
So I think the pieces come togetherand the Dallas does get one tonight,
fourth time all season. Yeah, not listed as a favorite. That
(08:33):
is insane. What a season forthe Boston Celtics. Good grief. Never
ask a question you don't know theanswer to. But any chance you could
tell me the other games that theyI'm looking right now. Okay, So
they were catching three and a halfagainst Sacramento on December to twentieth. Yeah,
and that game was so Jason Tatumgot hurt the night before. They
(08:54):
played at Golden State the night before, so a little bit of a spot
play there, but they still didultimately end up winning that game. Yes
they did. Do you know theother two? I do not, offhand.
Let me see if I can findthem again. No, I'm looking
right now. I got it toas far as in front of me as
well. That is insane, insane, Sean Beynard, I'm right now,
(09:15):
Yeah, that's crazy, all right. I have to do a little bit
of digging on that one. We'lltweet that out. Oh I got it
right here. I got two.At Milwaukee on January the tenth, they
were and they lost outright. Theyended up losing one thirty five to one.
Two the last time that the BostonCeltics were not listed as a favorite
in a game. That is incredible. What a stat what a stat with
(09:43):
that would have been it too rightthere back in January? Or were they
won? Were they a dog inyep? Three and a half? Right
here? Milwaukee both times so Aprilto ninth, two times to Milwaukee,
one time against Sacramento, and nowtoday against the Dallas Mavericks. Is the
fourth time that Boston has not beenfavored in the game. Insane, good
(10:03):
number there, good step by you. All right. Look, I think
this team can win without poor Zingis. I do know that he has been
a true difference maker in the twogames, filling it up on box scores.
Of course, game when he cameout he was unconscious, it would
have been a different ballgame from thestandpoint of it being in Dallas. We
(10:24):
know the calls will change slightly. We also know the role players are going
to continue to play better, ButI just thought that Porzingis and what he
was able to do clog up thedefensive side especially. You know, we
talked a lot about what Dallas wantsto do on offense, play above the
rim, the lobs, what they'vebeen able to do all the way through
the playoffs up until this point, and they haven't been able to get a
(10:45):
going against Boston. So without poorZingis in there, it does open up
the area just a bit as faras a Dallas penetrating. Now, you
know, we talked a lot aboutKyrie. What are we expecting from from
Luca tonight because he was the onethat's been dealing with this rib injury,
he's wrapped up like he's sixty yearsold on the sideline. What type We
(11:05):
know? He's a gamer, weknow he's going to get out there.
But this is a guy that hasn'tscored under thirty in the finals so far
through two games. Should we expectthat same type of output this evening for
Luca? Yeah? I think youhave to that. I certainly have my
concerns, my doubts about his levelof health. I know he's expected to
get a numbing injection before tonight's game, as he did before Game two as
(11:26):
well. That's not ideal when you'redealing with the laundry list of issues that
he currently is, with the ribinjury, with the knee injury, with
the ankle injury. There is apoint where that just weighs on you having
all those things to deal with. But he's Luka Doncic man. He's still
playing at such a high level. He's been very good through both of these
first two games, and in Gametwo specifically, I thought he had that
look in this eye of I'm refusingto lose this game, which we've seen
(11:48):
him pull out that card before. As long as he's on the floor and
doing his thing, I'm expecting nothingless than the high level player that he's
proven to be. So the injuriesare absolutely a factor. I'm hoping that
there is more help from the supportingcast where he does not have to shoulder
quite as much weight as has beenthe case though such far. But I
do think that he will ultimately bejust fine tonight. All right, let's
keep it moving, and we talkeda lot about Dallas so far. Let's
(12:11):
get it back over to Boston, and I think, you know, it's
not like Tatum didn't want to goout there and score points. See,
the shots weren't following fro him.He did take a significant amount of shots
through two games. So here weare game three, and you know what
they say about home and away. When you're away or when you're playing home,
the role players played better, andI thought that Boston did get a
(12:33):
lot of production from their role players, and not even so much there.
It's just a standpoint of Tatum allowingother players to do their thing with the
focus on him more So, nowI do expect Tatum to hit the gas
pedal tonight. How do you viewJason Tatum and his approach this evening?
Do you think we'll see any change? Do you think he's going to put
(12:54):
it on his back a little bitmore knowing that Drew Holliday just went out
for twenty six so maybe there mightbe some adjustments in that side from Jason
Kidding to Dallas Mavericks. Therefore,Tatum's gonna have the green light all evening
long. Yeah, I've kind offlip flapped on this that I certainly think
that Jason Kidd is playing some mindgames, trying to get Jason Tatum to
play a little bit out of theflow of what is just his normal style
(13:16):
of basketball. I do think Tatumis in his own head a little bit.
I think it's a little bit funnyhow the narrative has shifted to he's
being this playmaker, this team guy, when the reality is he's just not
shooting the ball well. Like fromthe first two games of this series,
he's shot six for sixteen in Gameone and six for twenty two in Game
two as thirty one percent combined. We're talking four to fourteen from three.
(13:37):
That's just not a fish and shooting. Now. Tatum has been very good
otherwise as a playmaker, as arebounder, as a defender. He shined
in all those areas. It's notlike he's playing bad basketball. But I
do think it's pretty far from thetruth to play it or portray it as
if he's playing passive basketball. Now, I do think twelve twelve Game two,
so it's kind of like, you'reright, and that's why I put
(13:58):
that out there. Look at thepercentages he's struggling to score. He's still
taking the shots, but at thesame time, twelve assists is twelve assists,
and he was hooking up Drewaliday withsome easy buckets in Game two.
Yeah, for sure. I thinkhe's certainly played better than probably the discussion
points are on him are indicating, but he hasn't been the Jason Tatum.
(14:18):
And when Jason Tatum is fully clickingas a basketball player, it starts with
his scoring. That's what everything createsoff that he's a score first player who
can play make off that it doesn'twork quite as well in the inverse for
him specifically here. So I dothink Tatum snaps out of it at some
point. He'll have at least onegame where it is a Jason Tatum game
where he's looking like the Finals MVPbest Player. I'm not optimistic that is
(14:39):
tonight. I do think there aresome real things that he's addressing, more
so on kind of the mental sideof things and finding his stride in this
series. So we'll see what happens, But I don't think tonight's the night
that Tatum bursts out. Twenty sixand a half is your player prop on
DraftKings Sportsbook Jalen Brown twenty three anda half. There as far as Drew
Holding thirteen and a half and justcoming off being the leading scorer in the
(15:03):
game with twenty six for Boston Lucaat thirty two and a half. That's
up a point from what it normallywas. And Kyrie Irving come on a
down, Kyrie Kyrie Kyrie Curry twentythree and a half. How do you
feel about any of those names rightthere with the points? Who do you
expect to hit their green check markas far as their player point prop I
(15:26):
still like the Jalen Brown over attwenty three and a half that I think
he's just gonna be pretty much assteady. I know he finished with twenty
one, so a little bit ofa dip in that last game, but
I do think that he'll be inattack mode and continue to be the Jaalen
Brown we know. I do leantowards the under on Jason Tatum that I
just don't think that he's gonna havethat level of pop, although I do
like the over first quarter six anda half points for Tatum. I could
certainly see him coming out in attackmode early. A guy that you didn't
(15:48):
mention that I do like his PJWashington over fourteen and a half tonight.
I think tonight is one of thosewhere they're gonna have to lean on the
supporting cast. Washington has shot shotthe ball much more poor than has been
the case. Like this was aguy who hit five three pointers in back
to back games during that Oklahoma Cityseries. He's only attempted a handful so
far. He's zero for two lastgame, one for three in Game one.
(16:10):
I think he lets it fly alittle bit more from deep. I
know that Boston has done a nicejob cutting off the corner three, but
Washington's a guy. I think they'regoing to make an effort to get involved,
and I do think that he clearsthat fourteen and a half number tonight,
all right, and anything from thestandpoint of first quarter, we are
the total as a whole. Arewe feeling like this is going to be
an up and down game? Dowe feel like, you know what,
(16:30):
these two teams are banged up,so maybe slow things down a little bit.
Where do we stand as far asproduction across the board? I expect
an early pop from Dallas for themto look to grab a lead early.
So I do like the first quarternumbers. Looking at Dallas's perspective, that
could be worth playing there. Idon't think the game ever gets out of
reach in either direction. I don'tthink Dallas quite has that level of ability
(16:52):
to put away this Celtics team,So I expect them to be in it
from start to finish in this biggame that still comes down to the wire.
But I do like Dallas in thefirst quarter and like Dallas straight up,
so that would be the direction fromthat side of things. PJ.
Washington two and a half points inthe first quarter, might take that as
well. Yeah, might take dealover on that one. All right.
Again, a lot to choose fromover here at Draftckings Sportsbook. And I'm
(17:17):
almost nervous to ask this, butyou're going with Dallas. You're gonna give
the three points? Correct? Correct? All right? And then what are
we talking about? The winning marginhere is concerned. So kind of the
story of this series to me isthe way I've looked at things is I
think Boston wins every game that they'reable to build up enough of a lead
and kind of keep it at arm'slength any game that comes down to crunch
(17:38):
time. I just trust this Dallasteam more to execute. And that's in
favor of Dallas for how good they'vebeen in those moments and in the other
direction. How much that we've seenBoston struggle in those types of situations.
I think tonight's could be one ofthose stories where it comes down to the
wire and Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irvingare capable of snatching the soul from Boston
right in front of them there. So I think ultimately the game probably ends
(17:59):
in a five point to seven pointvictory, but it is gonna be a
game that I think comes down tothe final two minutes for sure. All
Right, I'm I'm right there withyou. I hope you're right. I
hope it's the case. I hopethat we actually get a series and we
need Dallas to win tonight to getto that point. I do I definitely
(18:21):
disagree with you from the Tatum perspective. I think Tatum is going to try
to put this on his back andthey're gonna fall for him tonight. I
don't know why I feel that way. I do you think he's too good
of a player to continue to scoreat thirty percent shooting throughout the course of
the NBA Finals with the light shineof the brightest, So I like him
to go on the road be aterror this evening, So give me the
(18:47):
over on Tatum. I do likeyour PJ Washington, you know I'm a
big fan of that, especially withfourteen and a half and who knows what
type of effort Luca's gonna be ableto give Luca if he's not, if
he's not eighty five percent Luca, this could get ugly for I really do
think that. But we'll see.Maybe Kyrie, he's got a twenty five
point first half of them at homesince he's comfortable looking forward to it.
(19:07):
Though, it's gonna be a lotof fun this evening, all right.
Any same game parlay you're eyeing uphere for us this evening. I don't
have one finalized just yet. Ido lean towards I've been looking at the
Derek Lively over fourteen and a halfpoints, rebounds, assist a decent bit.
I think he's gonna be unlocked alittle more tonight. He's been pretty
out of control and just not greatthrough the first two games. I think
(19:29):
he's too good of a player notto find his stride. I think he's
helped by Porzingis being out that Ithink Kristavs not being in the lineup opens
up the possibility for Dallas to startto lean on this above the rim actions
where they're throwing lobs, getting theseguys on pick and roll, back door
cuts and that those types of things. So I think Lively might come alive
in this game. I'm looking athis direction to over fourteen and a half
in the combos department as well. All right, let's go Mavericks is the
(19:52):
pro Mavericks podcast right here, Picksand Roll. We'll see how this one
plays out, but I think Tatum'sgonna have himself a big game. I
also think Jalen Brown plus one fortyfor NBA Finals MVP needs to be in
your pocket at this point in timeas well. Long way to go two
games to none right now, Bostonwith the lead. We shall see how
this swan plays out this evening onceagain, Game three, eight thirty pm.
(20:15):
Check out what DraftKings has to offer. All you new users, use
braces the promo code. Let themknow that you're listening to us here on
the Gambler Sean before you get outof here today. Jerry West unfortunately passed
away. I believe eighty six yearsold. That's a hell of a life,
man, and that dude was sodedicated to the game of basketball through
and through of course the logo itselfNBA Champ Finals MVP for as from the
(20:44):
losing team too, something we discussedhere. Fourteen time All Star every single
year he played, nine Finals appearances, highest series point per game forty six
point three, twelve time All NBAplayer, and a hell of an executive
as well. Built Shaq and Kobewith the Lakers and had a little bit
(21:06):
of a role with the Golden StateWarriors. Don't really know too much on
the details on that one to gettoo much into specifics, but an absolute
legend and absolute icon in the gameof basketball. And man, we've lost
two of them pretty soon here, pretty close together. And Bill Walton and
Jerry West not cool, not coolat all, but a hell of a
life by Jerry West. Yeah, super sad stuff for sure. And there
(21:27):
truly are very few guys under youcan count on one hand who have impacted
the sport of basketball more than JerryWest beyond just being the logo, doing
it as an actual player, asan executive, trading for Kobe Bryant and
Shaquille O'Neil in the span of aweek is an absurd run to go on
as an executive there. So heis the man. He's been around forever,
still a guy who's pretty active inthe NBA world. So super sad
(21:49):
and obviously sending the best for hisfamily there. All right, great stuff
as always, Sean Bnar. Makesure your phone him on all things socials.
Shawnascor one, that is the numberone. Enjoy the games. We'll
be back tomorrow to recap it righthere in the daily Tickets. But uh,
let's go MAVs. Yes, sir, let's go MAVs. There he
(22:10):
is, that's Shambinard once again Picksand Roll. You miss anything, be
