Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, ladies, get thank God and stop. Actually don't know
the words for.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Embarrassing recovering. Gleek presents a clear Buffy podcast. Hello everyone,
My name is Lena and welcome to say a queer
(00:40):
Buffy podcast. We're happening.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
If I did the entire episode like this, that would
necessarily to stop actually give me that. I would get
vocal nodules within five minutes.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
And it wouldn't even be like it would be like, Ian,
you're so funny. Stop. I'd be like Ian stop.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
With Aaron and I my sister and we were kids,
That's how we would like fake burp. If we were
like pretending to burp, we go and like we just
like genuinely thought that that sounded.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Like a real burpa. That's funny.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Hey everyone, this is I have watched this episode foe time.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I watched it four time, my god, but honestly, isn't
it thrilling every time? It is like every time?
Speaker 1 (01:27):
So I watched it. When we recorded Oh my gosh,
some of Somebody Required. I was so excited to watch
School Hard that as soon as we finished talking about
some of Someone Required, I watched School Hard that night,
and then last we were gonna record this episode last week,
so I did my normal two watches to get prepped,
and then something came up and we had to reschedule,
(01:49):
and then I watched it.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
She's okay, good, good, She's fine now, and.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
So then I watched it a fourth time today, So
I I really think this is like the most prepped
I've ever been to talking.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
About the same thing. I've only watched it the three times,
but I have watched it recently before that, so maybe
four times for me as well. But yeah, we sat
down to record last week and my cat she had
I'm going to say it. It's gross, but I'm going
to say it. She one of her anal glands ruptured.
(02:23):
Oh yeah, oh gross, right, so she had to wear
a cone for the lost.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
I said, hell yeah, girl.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Hell yeah, yeah, it was gross. What are you saying?
Speaker 1 (02:32):
No, I just said, you said one of her anal
glands ruptured, and I said hell yeah yeah. And then
he said, oh it was gross, And I'm saying, I'm
not here to shame her.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
You said no, No, I'm saying, hell yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
I took her to the vet and they were like,
this happens all the time, all the time. Don't you worry?
And I said, is she dying? And I've been having
to give her like the grossest medicine literally on the
planet for the last however long three times and she
fucking hates it and she hates me. And she's been
in a cone and she fucking hates that and she
hates me and she doesn't but she is finally free today.
(03:08):
She doesn't have to wear a cone anymore. In her
butt is all good her, her her wounds have closed.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
She's ingrat on your working an.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
You don't have to include that.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Maybe I think that's that's a good tone setter for
the episode.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Absolutely, but she's good, you guys. She just you know,
every once in a while, your anal lands.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I don't know, they rapture.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
They rapture. It was so sad though. I took her
to the vet and I was like sobbing the whole time,
and they were like, she's fine, and I was like,
are you sure. So on Monday, when we sat down
to like do the podcast, Ian is like, are you good?
And I was like, yeah, how good. He's like, actually,
I can't work with this energy. I'll see you next week.
(03:50):
That's not what he said. Not what he said at all.
He was like, if you're feeling this anxious about her, like,
go sit with her. It's not a problem. So we're here.
A week later, I.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Said, actually, this is massively unprofessional of you. I'm signing
out of this call.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yeah, you were mad, you were mad?
Speaker 1 (04:05):
I said, how dare you care about your pet this much?
I had like a.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Baby cam on her and everything. Anyways, she's better now.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
I'm glad she's better.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
No, me too, me too. I love that baby. But
I you know who I love just as much? Who
my other baby?
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Is it a certain spikey pikey guy.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, wow, oh my god, it's time. It's a spiky guy.
Spikey guys, Spikey guys, Spikey guys.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Okay, weird to talk about episode season two, part of me,
Episode three, School Hard, which I do feel like on
my four watches, I have been like, this does feel
like maybe the series premiere of Buffy of like Buffy Official,
you know, no, totally, we are now jumping into what
(05:03):
the show is known as moving forward. It also especially
it does feel like the season two premiere, which I
am happy that it's episode three. I loved that we
got a little like, let's examine the fall out of
what happened in season one and then also some ofsembly
required listen to the last week's episode. We both loved
it time loved it. But this is the episode that
(05:24):
we are putting the pieces in motion as to what
the arc of the season is going to be. And
we got Spike and Drew on the scene. Oh you
got Bike and Drew. Who are some of the most
famous and popular characters in the Buffy the Vampire sleay
or canon.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
I don't even I seriously have been sitting on this
feeling for like a week. How do I explain my
love and care for these characters without spoiling anything but
shout out to we are girls who make the villains
their comfort characters. I am you, bestie, I am you? Yeah,
I I fuck with these two so hard. You don't
(06:04):
I'm I. You don't even fucking know.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
You guys, And there is I am like, I probably
shouldn't get into this until we go into the slacks
because it is just a larger conversation. But Spike and
Drew are such a smart direction for the show to take,
Like the season one villains were so stuffy, Yeah and
(06:32):
like ho ho hod order and rule, and I still
liked them when I thought the Master was a devon,
like I had a great time. No, I love that,
but their whole back was like rules, and we're taking
everything really seriously, even those kind of campions, Lacy, We're
taking it. But they were all massive sticks in the mud.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Bro. I'm so glad you bring this up, like even
in terms of like we're like, we're going to attack
on the anniversary of this dude dad, and then Spike
being like, actually, fuck the anniversary. I was I want
to do it today. Literally the rules.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
The Spike's penultimate line in this episode of We're gonna
have a little less ritual and a little more fun
around here is the turning point of the show, of
the show saying, actually, the villains can be just as
fun as the heroes. We don't need it to be like, oh,
since they're an ancient evil, they're you know, like an
(07:23):
old geezer. Yeah, it can be a rock and roll
dude and his crazy girlfriend and they're going to go
watch TV after they kill people exactly, and that I
mean sometimes more successful than others. But that is a
credence going forward with the show. That the villains tend
to be a lot more fun, and we're making bigger
swings with them from here on out. Spike and Drew,
(07:46):
your pioneers, We love you so much. We're so happy
to have you here much. Do you want to hear
some Beckron information about this episode? I actually quite a bit.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Oh yeah, I'm begging.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Okay, let's do the jingle. Oh yeah, it's time. Hi everyone,
Here are your slacks. So I wrote all these slacks
before we recorded last week, and then I just simply
haven't reread them, so I might be surprised by some
of them. We're going to find out. I have, as
I mentioned to you already, Lena, I have like rewatched
(08:19):
the episode today and gone over the notes I took
last week and everything, but the slacks. I thought it
would maybe be fun if I just went in a
little cold. So if I get tongue twisted, that's what's happening.
Schoolhard is a third episode of season one. It's a
fifteenth episode overall. It aired on September twenty ninth, nineteen
(08:41):
ninety seven. I was about to say, hell yeah, happy
first birthday, Diva. You mean Spike and Drew. Yeah, yeah,
that's thrilling.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Yeah, my birthday.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
Yeah, that's why you feel that's why you feel such
a connection to say, there is like some there is
some like weird predestined. Maybe it's because you're both libras,
because Spike I was born into the show on September
twenty night. Because I feel like it makes so much
sense for you to be a big Spike girl.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Yeah. Literally, yeah, Oh my god, that I can't I
can't tell you. That genuinely makes me a little emotional.
What the hell, that's so crazy.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
That's my birthday.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Oh my god, I didn't even know. I had no idea.
Whow Oh my god, happy birthday to me. I'm freaking out.
I'm so excited. Okay, keep going.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
So the episode was written by Josh Whedon and David Greenwalt.
David Greenwalt previously wrote Teacher's Pet, He wrote Angel and
then he wrote Nightmares with Whedon. And it was directed
by John T. Kretschmer, who directed the Harvest episode two. Okay,
and I think it's maybe the last episode that John T.
(10:07):
Kretchmer directs. It's not the last for David Greenwalls. He
sticks around for a while. It is the final episode
for John T.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Kretchmer.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
The title of this episode, Schoolhard, is a reference to
die Hard starring Bruce Willis, a movie which is about
I've never seen die Hard, and I was gonna say,
be gobsmacked if you had.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
I have seen the Dimension twenty die Hard. Hell yeah,
like their version of it.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
But my understanding, and I'm certain that there are numerous
people listening who have seen die Hard because it is
such a cultural mainstay. So I apologize if I'm wrong
about this, but my understanding of what Diehard is about
is Bruce Willis like there's a holiday party, there's a
Christmas party, and his family and a bunch of people
are over at the office for the Christmas party, and
(11:00):
then terrorist attack and hold all the guests hostage, and
now Bruce Willis has to like fight through his place
of work to save the hostages and putting his family,
which yes, and that's the kind of the part of
this episode is it's at Buffy's place of work quote
unquote her school, her mom is there, her mom has
taken hostage as along with a bunch of other people,
(11:22):
and Buffy has to fight the terrorists the vampires to
free the hostages. Whoa Buffy is. Bruce Willis is what
I am saying.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
I love.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
I've got some facts about Spike and Drew. So we're
going to start with Spike. Spike is played by James Marsters.
James is a former Juilliard student. However, he did not graduate.
He was expelled after two years.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
I didn't know expelled. What did he do?
Speaker 1 (11:56):
I know that Juilliard cut people from their program. I
think they like tried to make X amount of cuts
a year, but like they cut people all the time, okay,
and so I don't know if it's necessarily like he
was a big screw up and we're just like they're
kind of always looking for a reason to cut people.
(12:16):
I've listened to Gillian Jacob's Britta Perry and Community. She
went to Juilliard. I think she did graduate, but she's
talked in interviews about how Juilliard destroyed her love of
acting and it took her a while to get it
back because they were so intense about making cuts that
you didn't feel safe to be an artist and explore.
(12:37):
It was just like, oh my gosh, I need to
make sure that they don't cut me from the program. Anyways.
James Marsters had a past in theater. He did a
lot of Shakespeare stuff. Actually, I think coming off of
Buffy he had like just played Macbeth in a production
of McBeth somewhere.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Oh, but anyways, had a big background. What I just like, God,
I love him. I didn't know that and I really that.
Oh my god, I love him. Oh my god, I'm
freaking out.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
He had a big background in theater, specifically Shakespeare theater,
and this gagged me. When he landed the role of Spike.
He was thirty five years old. The way he looks
so good, I had no idea. I would guess he
was like twenty eight, twenty seven somewhere in there.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Oh, I'm so obsessed with a fucking ass.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
I remember when I went to International Thespian Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska.
They were giving us it was like the intro meeting
for all the students there, and we're in the giant auditorium,
the theater on the University of Nebraska campus and they're
(13:59):
talking to and they're talking about how you know, the
International Theestian Conference has been held at that university for
all these years, And they said, are there any.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Buffy fans in the audience, and I was like ah.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
And they said, James Marsters played Jesus in a production
of Godspell at the International Testing Conference on this very stage, and.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
I was losing my mind. We need to get him.
We got to get in contact with the Utah Shakespeare
Festival and get his ass there.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Get him on the stage, Get him on the stage.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
What does he want to play? I will make it happen.
I gotta call there.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
We're the puppet masters of the I got.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
My hand in all kinds of pies over there.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Brought a theater we have not worked at in like
four years.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
I know people, I don't know if.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
So, Spike. We learned this episode he was known as
William the Bloody. Part of me, William the Bloody. His
actual name was William. We find out later like this
isn't actually a spoiler, but we don't know this yet,
but his name is William Pratt. This name is a
reference to the actor Boris Karloff, who played Frankenstein in
(15:17):
the original Universal Frankenstein movie. Boris Karloff is a stage name.
His real government name was William Pratt. Oh nice Spike
is named after Frankenstein. One of the Universal monsters.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
What's that.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
The inspiration behind Spike? Sorry, I don't know like how
to word this. I really thought that going in blind
would be fun. All that's happening is I don't have
a train of thought because I don't know what the
next thing is. So I had to look at the
page and be like, what's happening to discover exactly, which
is tricky when you're also sharing the information with someone else.
(15:52):
So Spike and Drew they were based on Said Vicious,
other sex pistols, and his girlfriend, Nancy Spongeon. So Sid
and Nancy have long been a topic of cultural interest
because they started they started dating, and suddenly Nancy was
like a very public figure along with Sid Vicious. He
(16:13):
would have her in interviews with him, and she would
be answering questions and it was like, why is she here?
She's just some girl and we want to talk to
you about your music. And they also appeared to have
an extremely volatile and toxic relationship. Some people believe that
Nancy made Sid Vicious' addictions worse. She appeared to not
(16:35):
be fully mentally there. She kind of separated him from
the rest of the sex pistols, and then one night
in a hotel room. I forgot where once again, if
I was doing this last week, or if I had
taken the time to reread my notes and this would
be fresh in my brain. But I thought this would
be fun and instead it's stressful. Hey, it's in from
the future. So during this segment, I give a recounting
(16:57):
of Sid Vicious in Nancy Spungeen's death that is so
grossly inaccurate because I was trying to piece it together
from my memory and these sparse notes that I had
that I'm just going to re record it now and
give you a more accurate retelling of what happened. The
long and short of it is, one night Sid and
Nancy threw a party in their hotel room. During this party,
(17:20):
many people came and went. Sid was unconscious for most
of the party. At eleven am the next morning, Nancy
was found dead from a stab wound, and Sid was
wandering the halls of the hotel. It has never been
proven exactly how Nancy died. Some people believe that Sid
killed her. The one theory was that it was an
(17:42):
accidental death that she fell on the knife and then
Other theories are that another guest at the party killed her.
A few months later, Sid died of a drug overdose,
and once again there are conflicting theories as to what
happened there, whether the overdose was accidental or as someone
(18:03):
close to him claimed, if he had a suicide pact
with Nancy and the overdose was intentional. All in all,
very sad. Back to the episode proper, Basically, these two
people who were a little bit unbalanced came together and
just brought out the worst in each other and it
(18:25):
became extremely volatile until it ended in tragedy. So Spike
and Drew, you know, rocker male vampire and not fully
mentally their girlfriend are a bit of an analogy for
Said Vicious and Nancy Spongeon. So Spike takes a lot
(18:46):
of his inspiration aesthetically and performance wise from English punk
rock of the nineteen.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Eighties Oh yeah, man, you know the song.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Exactly by the sex Pistols, And while Spike was specifically
supposed to be Said Vicious, James Marsters has said that
he took inspiration in his performance from Johnny Rotten of
the Sex Pistols because he thought Said Vicious was quote
an idiot. I love I think he also maybe I'm
(19:22):
just thinking of Jack Sparrow. I feel like he also
mentioned that he took inspiration from Keith Richards, but once again,
I might just be thinking of Prisian anyways. Spike's bleach
blunt hare though, is a reference to Billy Idol and
then also a little bit of key for Sutherland and
The Lost Boys, where Keifer Sutherwins is playing a vampire
(19:44):
with a black trench coat and bleach blond hair.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
The Blueprint The Blueprint and.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
Also fun fact, Keifer Sutherlin's dad, Donald Sutherland, plays Marreck
in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie with Christy Swanson
and is the namesake for Christine Sutherland, who plays Joyce Summers.
Christine Sutherland Sutherland is not her last name. Her last
name is Young Lena, and I think she maybe was
(20:11):
raised Mormon because her last name, her last name was
Young and she was born in Idaho, which is a
very Mormon thing to be.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
Like, does a bear shit in the woods? Young is
from Idaho to where they raised Mormon? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Bro Hello. But when she went into acting, she changed
her last name to Sutherland as a shout out to
Donald Sutherland, who is key for Sutherland's dad and Also,
Joss says that he felt that the quote the peroxide
would define his face better. Now you have mentioned this
to me, you're actually the one who turned me onto
(20:44):
this fact. Lena, which is James Marsters, is a natural Brenette,
and on Team Buffy they were very much like, well,
a vampire's hair isn't gonna grow. Actually, we mentioned this
in the podcast already, but we don't talk about because
we had Spike. This is Spike. So they bleached his
(21:04):
hair every week that he was on Buffy and it
used to like blister up and then puss would drip
down his face and they'd have to towel him off
from all the puffs, which is so foul and disgusting.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Oh chi, hey, here is no joke. It is not right.
Bleaching it every year is so insane, and especially like
to the Scalp, I've seen so many interviews with him,
like they were really intense about it, like it also,
I think he took it really seriously, so he was
also pretty intense about it as well, and they just
(21:37):
like had so many rules for it, and it would
just go like straight onto the Scalp, like get this
man a wig.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
I'm begging oh it's nasty. Spike has a scar on
his left eyebrow. That is a real scar that James
Marster's got from a mugging. Instead of trying to think,
I know, cray well, hello, scary is what I was
trying to say, scraary. Instead of trying to high the scar,
makeup artist Todd Macintosh decided to shave the eyebrow to
(22:04):
make it more prominent, and then put the scar on
top of his vampire prosthetics as well.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
I gotta say it's hot.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
It works, No, it really does. It works and also
just a fun fact. Although Spike from the beginning was
envision does an English punk rock vampire, James Marster's auditioned
with the Southern Louisiana accent. I think that was a situation, Yeah,
I think that was a situation where they wanted to
just like, maybe we'll go this direction. Can he try
(22:33):
it on this way as well?
Speaker 2 (22:34):
Yeah? I honestly, for a long time I didn't know
that he wasn't British. I think, I mean, of course
I'm not British this, so maybe the Brits will feel differently.
I'm like, I feel like he does a pretty good
job at like keeping that shut up.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
This is where I want to hear from my British
listeners because I feel the same way. I feel like
much love. Juliet Landau is doing the most like Dick
van Dyke American pretend to be British performance ever And
James Marsers, I think is eating it up. I think
he sounds legit British. But like you said, we're Americans,
(23:09):
so yeah, so what do we know. We're not as
attuned to fake British accents. Yeah, so I'd love to
hear what people think I would too, So speaking of
Juliet Landau, Juliet Landau was our Drusilla. Now James Marshers
is thirty five, she was thirty two. Juliet Landau is
a Naple baby Bally Yeah yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Oh spill.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
Her dad is Martin Landau, who is an Academy Award winner,
Oh lord, and a multi Emmy nominee. And he was
the head of the Hollywood branch of the Actor Studio
until his death in twenty seventeen.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
Yeah wait, the one on Glee.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
No, you're thinking of the New York.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
Head Oh okay, okay, I got it.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
What is that guy's name? Who's also in he's also
unarrested development. But no, not him. He's the New York branch.
Martin Landau was the California branch.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
I understand. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
And then her mother is Barbara Bain, who is an
Emmy Award winner and a Golden Globe nominee. Barbara Bain
and Martin Landau, I believe met because they were both
in Mission Impossible together, the TV show, not the movie,
the og TV show.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
They're both the Mission Impossible together.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
Yeah, yeah, baby, that's the inception of Mission Impossible.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Well, I've never seen visions the movie either, and.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
Julie Landa's parents were in that show. I think that's
how they met. I might be wrong. So Julie Landau
started her career as a professional balagna and she would
do and she would do some independent films and occasional
TV appearances on the side, because that's the lecture you
have when your parents are well connected.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Of course you can.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
Act as your side hustle. Joss Whedon got his eyes
on Juliet Landau when he saw the Tim Burton movie
ed Wood, which is a movie I know I would
love love and I just have ever seen Wait.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
You haven't I feel like you talk about that movie
all the time.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
You feel like I talk about ed Wood all the time?
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Yes, girl, What have I said about it? A bunch
of stuff for someone who's never seen it. You sure
bring it the hell up. It's it's really up my alley.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
It's a movie about the making of bad, schlocky sci
fi movies, which I.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Don't think my dad really liked that movie.
Speaker 1 (25:24):
Julia Landau she plays like a girl that Edward dates
or something. I've seen her scenes because I was truly
she does like she barely acts, like Buffy's kind of
the only mainstream thing she's ever done. Sure, and I
just really like Julia Landau, Like, yes, her accent is bad,
but I'm obsessed with her. Her performance is so captivating
to me.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
Oh my god, No, seriously, I like. And so I have.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
Watched specifically just her scenes from Edwood on YouTube.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
I think I would love that movie. Let's watch it. Okay. Anyways,
So Joss saw Edwood was like, who's that girl? She's
so fine? Who's that girl? I don't recognize that girl?
She looks so good. He never really knows what you
probably should, so he called her agent and they set
up a meeting and she never even auditioned. Once again,
when your parents are famous, you don't audition. She's like whatever,
(26:14):
some guy just sees you in a movie, calls your agent,
sets up a meeting, and you just get the part.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Oh I love her. She's icon of all icon.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
Sorry, okay, so this is once again, this is a
moment of discovery for both of us because I forgot
that I wrote this. So Julia Landau obviously she was
cast first. She did not even audition, so they were
casting Spike off of her, and I believe she decided
to do a British accent because she knew that it
was inspired by Sid and Nancy. So she's like, of
(26:44):
course it'd be British, which is hilarious because Nancy Spongeon
was fully American.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
Yes she was American, but she did.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
I was watching an interview with Nancy Spongeon and said,
vicious and she does have like you know how Diana
Agron every once in a while pretends to be British.
Nancy Spongeen was giving that. It was like every few words,
You're like, girl, why are you saying it like that?
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Totally?
Speaker 1 (27:08):
But I read an interview with Juliet Landau where she says,
I decided to have a Cockney accent to go with
this whole sit in Nancy analogy. So I think that's
why James Marsters auditioned with Louisiana is like, that's what
he came in with and did that. But they were
casting him off of me, bless you. They were casting
him off of Juliet Landau, and so they said, actually,
(27:30):
could you do it once in a British accent to
match her?
Speaker 2 (27:33):
Oh and he and he blew her out of the water,
he sounds, I mean to me, and she went spoys, spoike.
Speaker 1 (27:42):
Drusilla's appearance fashion wise is a cross between Victorian fashion
end quote Kate Moss, heroin chic Bah. Now, those are
all of our like casting us.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
Big slacked about Juliette Landau. Oh my gosh, what is it?
She follows me on Twitter? Oh that's right, Yeah, she
follows me on Twitter. There was a point and like
real Buffy Twitter people will hear me when I say, like,
if you were tweeting about Buffy like around twenty fourteen,
twenty fifteen, she was following your ass, like she found
(28:15):
me and it was awesome. I've she still follows me
to this day. It's really sligh a queer Buffy podcast.
I literally like freaked out. I was like, Julia, no,
it was so exciting, one of the best days of
my life.
Speaker 1 (28:31):
We should start tagging her and posts on Instagram and
I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
She would love it. Well, I mean like, yeah, that's
the thing.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
She does have her own Buffy podcast. I will say,
Julia Landow has a Buffy podcast.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
And there's like a subsect of people who were on
Buffy who still like really care about the fan base,
like they go to all the conventions, they go to
all like they like hole they they were they just
had like a Buffy convention at the high school. Yeah,
Tons High, Torrance High, and like that was one of.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
Those Rubia Scott went to and I was like, oh, missus,
girl is happy that she was on Buffy again.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
And our arm and shimmer mood was there too, our
old coworkers like.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
Right, all the principles give like a yeah, like had
all the principles. Yeah, I'm trying to like a hall
h what's that called a talkback? I guess they had
like a principal talk back.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
Something like yes, we should go. Honestly, when I saw that,
I was like Ian and I should go, even just
for fun like as fans. Yeah, but also maybe we
could get a press pass or something anyway, So yeah,
Juliettlanda follows me on Twitter and she still very much
is like involved in the Buffy fan base, and I
care deeply about that woman. I love her. I know,
(29:39):
I think she's I mean James Marsters as well. These
two they are my special angels. I can't even express,
you guys, how much I and you.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
Know, like every time that they run into each other,
they are taking a million pictures as putting them on
social media.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
No okay. Also if they had like a they you know,
they did like the Buffy Audible thing a couple of
years ago, and they did like a reading somewhere. And
these two I can to love each other so much,
and like every time they ever are near each other,
they're like flirting, like Spike and Drew being so silly.
I I just love them. I really think they're so special.
(30:15):
I love you Spike and Drew. I love Drew Drusilla.
That's my no. I you guys are the best day
of my life. My first birthday see, and this is like,
that's too easy. I had no idea.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
I do think these are the two sides of us.
How are two sides of the same coin?
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (30:37):
Is you? We both love Spike and Drewe.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
But you connected immediately with Spike. Yeah, and me as
a teenager, I connected really hard with Drew that.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
What does that mean about us? I love it.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
I was like a spooky, crazy, powerful woman literally in sexual.
Speaker 2 (30:57):
Yeah, no I am, I'm hello. I immediately love all
that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Yeah, and that was like much love to James Marsters.
I genuinely think he's so talented.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
I was never intrigued to be like, what else has
he done? But I was like scouring Juliet Landell's dB page,
like what else?
Speaker 2 (31:15):
Wat? Let me watch her ballet performances? No, I love that?
So are you so jealous? She follows me on Twitter. Yeah,
goodness sake, my god, I can't believe this came out
of my birthday. That's insanity.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
So here's some more facts about this episode. That the
most exciting stuff is past I will say. Okay, so
Buffy tells Sheila. Sheila says, did you really burn down
us building one time? And Buffy says, not exactly one time,
and that's a reference to last week when she burned
down the building and some assembly required. So now she's
up to two sick jim at the old school and
(31:56):
wherever the heck they were for some of simply required.
The lab the yo yo Xander pulls out of Buffy's
purse is the same one she's playing with at the
beginning of some assembly required. Hey our girl loves the
yo yo okay.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
En.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Buffy Wiki says that this is the first episode where
Cordelia is officially a Scooby. I don't agree with that. No,
not at all, they say, because this is the first
time that she's helping without it being like a life
and death situation for her, which I understand. The other
time she teams up with them is because she is
actively in danger, like.
Speaker 2 (32:29):
Sometimes you like choose to be a Scooby and sometimes
being a Scooby is thrust upon you. I don't think
that that changes it though.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
And also Prophecy Girl, I don't think like she easily
could have just driven away. She made the active choice
to drive towards the danger to help out, So I disagree.
I think Prophecy Girls her first time, so hey. Also,
there was a fact on Buffy WICKI that was confusing
(32:56):
to me that said, this is the first episode to
give joy a name, and I was wondering, has she
not been called Joyce up to this point?
Speaker 2 (33:06):
Maybe?
Speaker 1 (33:08):
I guess I just know her so much as Joyce that.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
I'm like, was she really only funny? Maybe? Hey?
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Hey? Also, Willow is wearing a Scooby Doo shirt at
pta night. Willow loves Scooby Doo and it's a lot
of manifesting for our girl SMG. Who's gonna play Daphne
and the Scooby Doo movies in a few years. They
were circling her even now. And finally, in this episode,
(33:39):
this is just little goof Spike. When he sees angel
he goes Angelus. Every other time that Angel's long version
of his name is mentioned in this show, it is angelous.
It is a bit of a hanhand Leah Lea in
Star Wars situation.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
Hey, all right, And finally, oh my gosh, sorry, I
just got really congested. Now we're going to take a
trip to the bronze and here his play.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
Yay, he's playing.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
So the band in this episode is called Nickel. Now.
Nickel was a band that it was very difficult to
find any information about. They released this one album called
Stupid Thing, which has two songs featured in this episode,
and then they didn't leave much of an internet footprint
beyond that. I did find their band website. Their band
(34:42):
website is frozen in time on October nineteenth, two thousand
and one. Like literally, you go on the website and
the date in the corner is October nineteenth one. Yeah,
So here's all the stuff I could find out about Nickel,
La based band. Tom McDermott is guitar and vocals, Robert
(35:03):
Schmidt is basin vocals, Fabrizio Munos is drums, and Mike
McLaughlin took over drums once Fabricio left the band. So
I don't know which one. I don't know if it's
Fabrizio or Mike in this episode because I don't know
when the read they had the album as I mentioned,
called Stupid Thing. Title track stupid Thing is featured in
(35:24):
this episode that ah, I did a stupid thing last night. Also,
their song one thousand Nights is featured in this episode.
So this band, let's see, So there was a music
video of Stupid Thing, which came about because screenwriter slash
(35:48):
director Grant Wheeler took an interest in this band. I
don't know why. Once again, not a lot of information here,
and he funded the creation of a music video. This
music video got sent out, it got them a little
more publicity. The music video got featured on MTV, and
that's part of the reason that they got the gig
on Buffy. And then they disbanded at some point. I
(36:12):
imagine Tom McDermott, the lead singer, has a YouTube channel
now that he created thirteen years ago, uploaded a bunch
of videos for one day and then hasn't touched since.
The YouTube video has the Stupid the YouTube channel part
of me has a Stupid Thing music video, and then
three videos of Tom modern day playing guitar and singing
(36:36):
h and Grant Wheeler, the guy who funded the music video,
is recording those present day videos. So they're still friends,
it looks like. And then that's the last I could
find of them. So, Nichol, I hope you're doing well
out there.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Literally that song you sing is good.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
Yeah, I like that song. Now here are some other
titles for this episode. Yeah, Armenian, we got learning difficulties. Okay, French,
we got attack on Sunnydal okay, I like Japanese. We
got die hard school I love. And then the winner
(37:11):
taking back the crown German period parent teacher conference with obstacles.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
That's so silly. I love it. That's so funny too,
because I honestly had no idea that this was that
school hard was die hard. I just thought it was
like on school is hard.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
I'm gonna be honest, so did I. I did not.
It did not clock.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
But it's so funny to like translate that, you know,
so good hard school die hard school.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
Well, I doing that realized it was a mistake to
not have reviewed those notes beforehand. That was clunky as hell,
but I did my best.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
Those are the slacks you did. And listen, get this.
I haven't looked over the recap that I wrote last week.
Hey girl, more fun I mean, I'm already dyslexic, so
we will definitely see how this goes. Previously, I'm Buffy
the Vampire Slayer. It's parent teacher conference week, and of
(38:10):
course all the vampires are planning to attack the same night.
That's wrong, girl, to attack on Saturday, while we just
make commentary as I do this. Classic Oh my god,
what do I know? Jess Buffy's luck, Her and fellow
delinquent Sheila have been paired together to plan the entire night.
Fucking Snyder, won't you stop breathing down our girl's neck.
(38:33):
Some spiky guy and his creepy girlfriend come to town
and they're about to take the order of Relia, spy storm,
bitch fuck the annoying one. Spike has killed slayers before
and he's gonna do it again. Spike shows up to
the Bronze, lets Buffy and the Scoobies know that she
has been marked, and he and to watch her fucking back.
Classic Wednesday for Buffy parent teacher conference rolls around and
(38:57):
Sheila is nowhere to be found, and all the vamps
show up to terrorize the teachers and the parents and
everybody is scared, and Angel shows up and uses Xander
as bait. Buffy, of course, focks all their shit up,
but Spike is just about to get her, and then
Joyce comes in to save and saves the day. Gee
I love you, Joyce, but Spike gets away, Snyder and
(39:17):
the cops cover it all up. Classic Spike and Drew
are here to stay and we are here to slay.
Speaker 1 (39:29):
My favorite part of that was you were, like, because
you hadn't read it in a week, you were doing
you were gesticulating with everything you said, trying to, like,
I don't know, focus yourself better, really feel the emotion.
You kept moving your hands with all the words like
and then this this this.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
Yes, yes, girl, that's a voice acting technique. I'm kind
of killing it.
Speaker 1 (39:57):
You're bringing yeah, you're bringing emotion into.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
It, beautiful yes to silly.
Speaker 1 (40:04):
Okay, Thankfully, from here on out, we have watched the
episode today, so now we are past to bring.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
I've watched it one more time than I did last week.
I know more about the episode, obviously. I just sproved it.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
We're gonna be fine.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
I'm actually myself in the recap.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
See now you know that the vampires weren't planning on
attacking parent teacher night. It was a spur of the
moment decision by Spike exactly.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
Oh my god, and that is yes, go no. I
was just gonna say, I really loved this episode. I
think this episode is tons of fun, and I think
it's one of the scariest. Like obviously, it's no like
horror movie. It's definitely more. I mean, I don't know.
I haven't watched Diehard. No surprise to you. Obviously you
were like Lena would never see Diehard, But I mean, like, no,
(40:51):
I genuinely haven't. You're right, but it's way more like
thriller style, and I don't know, like Spike is so fun.
I don't even I want to and get into this,
but Spike in this episode is so fun and genuinely frightening,
like to attack like the teachers and parents at the school.
I like the way it's filmed. It's so scary and
(41:12):
so fun and so thrilling, and like, who are these characters?
It's immediately a different tone in a good way. I
cannot even tell you how much I love this episode.
Happy Birthday, Happy first birthday.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
To me, Happy first birthday to you, Spike and Drew
but gave boay goggles off, specifically Spike in Jacked because
I love Drew. I love Drew, but really in these
introduction episodes, yeah, all Drew does is be like I'm
crazy and exactly like.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
I know, kill her for the princess. I love it.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
I love Sometimes I'm afraid that all my have will
fall out and all be ball and I said, girl,
I have that same fear.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
Actually, no, seriously, actually twenties all the people mos. But like, yeah, Spike.
Speaker 1 (42:15):
Is an injection of energy that this show. I don't
know if, like I don't want to say need because
I don't think it was on life support before. But
the show is so much better off for it. And
I think James Marshers is like giving the performance of performances,
Like I think he's the best performance of the episode.
No easy, he's really he does a really great job.
Speaker 2 (42:37):
And I too, even he is so different from Angel
immediately immediately, so different, and girl, I eat this, shut up.
Speaker 1 (42:50):
It's so nice to have a vampire. You know, we
got like gloomy, depressed vampires, and then we got vampires
who are doing their vampire things.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
In an ugly ass cardigan. What vampires doing their vampire thing?
The one who's like trying to take over for the
master's position, and he's like, oh I was that at
the Crucifixtions. Ugly ass card again, boring, boring, ugly, lazy cardigan.
And it comes in the.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
Vampires who are like doing their vampire thing and ugly
ass cardigans. Yeah, out of a sense of a sense
of like we are the superior species and we should
have power. And then Spike comes in and he's a
vampire who's just doing it for the love of the game.
Like he's just doing it for kicks, He's just doing
it for fun. He's just here to have a good time. Yea,
(43:45):
And that is so fun and that's also so scary.
Speaker 2 (43:48):
Yeah, and him.
Speaker 1 (43:50):
I think there are so many moments in this episode
that are undercutting the Order of Aurelius and showing us
that Spike operates by different orders. Yeah, the main one
being that Order of Aurelius. We always knew, you know,
tonight's the harvest. They're gonna attack tonight. They they had
(44:12):
to do everything according to some stupid rule system that
they had created, and so they became incredibly predictable because
of that.
Speaker 2 (44:20):
Yeah, and Buffy in the gang can be prepared mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (44:24):
And then to have Spike we've been playing this whole
time that the Satan Vigi's feast is on Saturday, and
then Spike to jump into the parent teacher conference night
on a Wednesday and say, what can I say? I
couldn't wait that He's just like I don't know, I
want to kill you now, so why am I gonna
wait for some dumb holiday to do it?
Speaker 2 (44:39):
So fun like he obviously like and we know immediately
he's like driven by the love of the game and
pleasure where it's like it just he just wants to
he's bored and he can and he has before and
he will again.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
And seeing him interact with the Order of Relius when
I think the Order of Relius is is funny in
this episode, And it's funny that the Sunken Church is destroyed.
They're all dead at this point, there's like six of
them in a warehouse and a little boy, and yet
they still have these delusions of grandeur of like, look
at us, we are the royalty of the vampire world.
(45:20):
And to have a Spike walk in and just be like,
you guys are loser morons. I don't take you seriously
at all. He's the annoying one. I'm gonna light him
on fire and take over this whole.
Speaker 2 (45:32):
And that's something too, is I think the Anointed One
in general is not my favorite villain, especially like it's
a it's a child, like what come on? So I
think like just throwing some new energy in is so
so deeply fun.
Speaker 1 (45:48):
Yeah, and I've I've been a Colin Hayter. Yeah, No,
you have never kill a boy on the first date.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
No you don't. I mean I have like no opinion,
which like I mean, I would rather hate him. I
would rather hate him. I really have no opinion about Colin, which, like,
come on.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
I think it was fun when he and the Master
would be like holding hands and talking, that was good.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
And when he was like holding Buffy's hand, I thought
that was cute. Like when he is like interacting with
other even No, in this episode he has one line
and he's.
Speaker 1 (46:21):
Also like he's got like three lines.
Speaker 2 (46:24):
He bores me. Yeah, Helia Joel Osmon wouldn't let me
down like this d And I.
Speaker 1 (46:30):
Think I think it is one. I breathe a sigh
of relief to see him killed off, and that is necessary.
I don't think the show was on life support before,
but I do think The Anointed One's storyline was on
life support. It was very much like with the Master gone,
I actually don't care about you at all. Yeah, and
(46:51):
I don't find you threatening and.
Speaker 2 (46:53):
Like the Anointed One was for like one prophecy, like
she won't know who he is, Like, he didn't even
phil that part of the prophecy.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
Who you are?
Speaker 2 (47:03):
She said, I know you shut up?
Speaker 1 (47:05):
So what the hell, Annointed one? What are you good for?
Speaker 2 (47:07):
You know, what are you good for? And I guess, hey,
you're not good for anything? Why you're on my TV show? No, seriously,
I just think in I mean you guys, these are
two of my very favorite characters in this entire TV show.
Get fucking excited. I literally I've been. I've been like
I'm coming like happy dancing. Oh god. And also I
(47:32):
feel like it's so funny like Aaron mentioning the spiky
guy or a guy named Spike. I literally was like,
and so many times throughout the first season I have
like wanted to mention him and wanted to bring that
bring him and drew up like, oh my god, a
sigh of fucking relief. And obviously we don't know anything
about him, but I can tell you that I love him.
(47:54):
And even in this first episode is God, what a
fun character.
Speaker 1 (47:58):
Yeah, I mean iconic entrance crashing into the Sunnydale sign,
which is for some reason at a child's playground, Like
why is the wealth of the Sunnydale sign? At a
child's play on the first thing you see when you
got your town.
Speaker 2 (48:12):
Like not even a road you can hello, Yeah, I'm
so confused about this town.
Speaker 1 (48:17):
But him crashing into that sign coming out of the car, Yeah,
that is genuinely maybe the most famous character introduction of
the entire show.
Speaker 2 (48:29):
Easy, No, it's amazing. Yeah, so genuinely very excited that
my husband's here.
Speaker 1 (48:37):
Yeah, all right, schoolhard. This episode is so well regarded
and so famous and so iconic that I am feeling
extremely stressed to tell about it.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
I keep like.
Speaker 1 (48:54):
Getting tongue tied and then like not knowing what I
want to say. So I'm putting that out there now
so we can all be on this journey together her
Okay that I feel like there are there are big
shoes to fill with this episode, okay, and I don't
feel capable of filling them.
Speaker 2 (49:11):
I'm just air that we should have stop.
Speaker 1 (49:13):
Do you want to stop?
Speaker 2 (49:15):
Yeah? Okay? It was fun.
Speaker 1 (49:18):
See you next week next week for inca mommy girl.
Speaker 2 (49:23):
We can't you guys? See ya? Do it? You can
do it?
Speaker 1 (49:27):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (49:27):
Do you want to how do you want to do it?
Do you want to split it by character? I feel
like we always h I love to talk about splitting
up through by character.
Speaker 1 (49:35):
We can talk about how to do that.
Speaker 2 (49:37):
Do you want to start with Buffy Joyce or do
you want to start with Drew.
Speaker 1 (49:40):
Spike Buffy Joyce.
Speaker 2 (49:42):
We can start with Buffy Joyce. Okay, cool, Okay, listen.
One of my favorite Joyce moments happens in this scene.
I mean this scene, lool this episode, but I also
have to say, really, we're watching it this afternoon. I'm
so pissed at her. Joyce has been on my list
for quite some time. Obviously, I love her, That's my mother.
I love her very much. But whenever I think about
(50:05):
this episode, I always think about how she comes in
and saves the day, Like hits Spike over the head
with an axe, but the side of the axe, Like
she doesn't chop down, Like she doesn't want to lethally
kill this man.
Speaker 1 (50:17):
She doesn't want to put an axe to his brain
in front of her teenage daughter.
Speaker 2 (50:26):
I guess you're right.
Speaker 1 (50:27):
She doesn't know it's a demon, Like why did she
just behead this man? She's just a single suburban mom
and as far as she knows, that's her regular ass
daughter in front of her She's want to see her,
have her daughter see her mom cut a man's head
off with the blade. How about you grow some balls
(50:50):
and cut that man's head off. How about you buck
up and send that ax through his cranium? How about that, Joyce,
I guess you're right going to jail for murder.
Speaker 2 (51:03):
Oh my gosh, it was self defense.
Speaker 1 (51:08):
Yeah, I still think it's It would be a long
legal struggle. It's much easier to be like I knocked
him unconsciously.
Speaker 2 (51:17):
You say it, and I realized my hair of my
ways genuinely was like, it's like, just ump out, Joys
the hell coward doing.
Speaker 1 (51:32):
It? Grows fine.
Speaker 2 (51:38):
Genua genuinely that way, that makes sense, So good for her,
A non lethal hit, she said, phasers just done anyway.
But you know, I always think of that moment. And
she's like, you know, step the fuck away, that's my kid.
Like I can't.
Speaker 1 (51:59):
Remember stood the fuck away, that's my kid.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
But listen, okay, And then she has this beautiful conversation
with her afterward with Buffy after and she's like, he said,
you're a troublemaker, and listen, I don't care. Like you
are an incredibly capable young woman. I really appreciate that
you think about others in a crisis, Like you really
saved our asses tonight. Thank you so much. I'm really
proud of you. But earlier in this fucking episode.
Speaker 1 (52:25):
Girl, I know, I think I know what you're gonna say,
and she's on my list for it as well.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
I cannot even Joyce, I you were so nice at
the end of this episode, but I can't forget about
where you know, Buffy is struggling so fucking much. She
is juggling so many balls, and no one is being
understanding to her at all, Like even and I'm gonna
(52:50):
sit your ass down, Giles, I'm talking to you too.
You're next Where you know, Buffy is talking to Joyce
about parents teacher conferences, and Joyce is like, listen, the
main thing is I just don't want to be disappointed
in you again, Like she says something so god off Auchi.
Speaker 1 (53:11):
She is talking to Buffy about like, you know, the
last time you got in trouble, we had to move,
we had to start completely over, had I had to
start a new business, et cetera, et cetera, And Buffy says,
and you don't want to have to start over again,
(53:32):
and then Joyce says, what I don't want is to
be disappointed in you again. And I literally if my
mother said that to me, I would burst in a flame.
Speaker 2 (53:38):
No seriously, I read I would have died on the spot. No,
it is devastating. Auchi, I can't believe she says this
like and to even and listen, she did burn down
to school, so I understand where she's coming from a
little bit. But it's like it's like, Buffy, don't forget.
You really ruined our lives, like, you know, the business
(53:59):
that I had to start, like the school, we had
to leave the house, we had to leave all of
your memories, your dad everything, that's all your fault, bestie
in it is. But it's also like, come on, Joyce,
like this girl is a child like and then to
top it off with the worst thing a mother can
say to a daughter like I'm disappointed in you and
I don't want to be again. Ouch ouch ouch ouch.
(54:21):
And yes, it ends well, and I do feel like
Joyce has a lot of love for her daughter that
I feel in every scene. No matter what, I'm pretty
sure that's Christine Sutherland, like, you know, being the most
mormant alive her Mormon upbringing her warm ass heart anyway.
But yeah, so I especially this last watch, I was like, wow,
(54:42):
ouch ouch ouch. If my mom said that to me,
I burst into flames.
Speaker 1 (54:46):
I feel differently about it than you do, Okay, I
the disappointed thing. I was like, so that actually is
a bridge too far, That is, I wrote, Damn, Joyce,
that is cold as a hell to be like, don't
want to be disappointed in you? Is that what? That
actually is? Hunting me now? And that wasn't even my mom.
(55:07):
But as far as the like remember last time we
had to start all over is also cold as hell
and is undeserved because we know what's going on with Buffy.
But like in Joyce's mind, you have this daughter who
kept missing school at her old school and getting in
fights and then burned down the gym, and it did
(55:27):
genuinely kind of ruin both of your lives and you
had to start over. And now she's doing the same
shit and is missing class again, and he's getting in
fights again and burned down a building last week. I
do think obviously she's incorrect, because that's not there's more
to the story. But like from Joyce's perspective, I would
be like, hey, lest I remind you what happened last
(55:50):
time you acted like this.
Speaker 2 (55:53):
Yeah, but that's my that's my Buffy.
Speaker 1 (55:55):
I understand that that's because because we have the whole picture.
But that's my joys, that's what I'm saying. But that's
my joys. And she's doing the best she can with
the information she has.
Speaker 2 (56:05):
Kay, And you know what, thanks for bringing it up.
I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (56:07):
But I do think that disappointed is cold as out
a lot, And yeah, it would haunt me forever.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
You're right, you're right, you're right. Thank you for your perspective.
And I agree in a certain point. But I'm like, Buffy,
get behind me, because even and Giles stepped to the front,
Step to the front, and bring your girlfriend. Step to
the front, step to the front. You're next, Giles. Okay
for two fucking oh my god, buckle up for two
fucking teachers. They sure do not understand that the principle
(56:37):
of the school, their fucking boss is not only ready
to rip her a new asshole, but ready to shove
it to her mom and also is making her plan
the pta night. And Giles doesn't give a shit. Giles
doesn't give a shit. This episode, it's oh my god,
it actually pisses me off off. And then oh my god,
(56:58):
Jenny girl, you too, Jenny the least teacher teacher who's
ever been a teacher pissing me off this episode. And listen,
we're all telling a story here. So I understand, no
ill will towards my towards my threatble, No ill will
towards my threat ball. But they were fissing me off
so bad. It was these two teachers who could not
(57:19):
understand that she had school obligations. They were like, why
aren't you whittling steaks? And she's like, oh wait, no,
I have to make a banner for the pta night
and you guys don't give a shit. I have to
I have to balance so many fucking like, so many
plates on a fucking stick today, And you guys are like,
why aren't you whittling sticks? Come on, it was pissing
(57:40):
me off.
Speaker 1 (57:40):
Actually, I am fully with you on this one.
Speaker 2 (57:43):
This is crazy, Like they're teachers.
Speaker 1 (57:46):
Yeah, that's my thing is He's right there. I'm Giles
keeps being you know, it's not that Buffy wants to
go hang out with her friends, it's that she has
to do this thing. Or the person is going to
expel her. No, she's going to leave school, and and
Giles says to her something like, you know, I told
(58:08):
you you can't let your personal life get in the
way of your slaying. And I understand that the demons
could take over the world and everyone will die, and
that is, like on paper, of course, is more important
than this parent teacher night. But Giles, you fucking work
at the school. Why don't you do something about it? Yeah, Like,
(58:30):
why don't you ahole? Like goodness six? That was what
was driving me crazy, is I was like, yeah, I
understand that the vampire stuff is more important, but also
you work at the school. She can't get expelled, so
why don't you help her out? Why don't you use
some of your teacher wait to like work with the
principal or what the fuck? Why can't the Watcher's council
(58:52):
just like pull her out of school and do something
else with her if you're gonna be so mad about
her attending school?
Speaker 2 (58:57):
I know. And that's the thing too, is and I understand,
and he is kind of it's just so funny to
put him in a school setting and also make him
not give a shit about school. No, seriously, I'm like, okay,
hold the hold the phone. And Jenny, Jenny too. There
are so many moments in this episode where she's she
doesn't give.
Speaker 1 (59:15):
A shit about Buffy. She's just there because she's I
don't think, No, she don't know how much she cares
about Buffy.
Speaker 2 (59:22):
No, I know, And I think also, I mean, she
probably has a different perspective on it too, with being like,
you know, a different side of the like magical world
in this way.
Speaker 1 (59:31):
Like a vigilante instead of.
Speaker 2 (59:34):
She's probably never worked with a slayer before. She's been fine,
Like she probably like you know, knows that the slayer
is important, but like mostly cares about getting it done anyway.
Like I don't know, so she I'm not feeling a
lot of love for Buffy from Jenny, which I hate that,
which I love you, Jenny, not too much, my threatball,
(59:55):
but I don't know. It was just making me mad,
and I mean, like, of course it's supposed to. I know.
Speaker 1 (59:59):
This is all the third in this threuttle that you
keep bringing up. Yeah, okay, good, I was just making
shirk continue.
Speaker 2 (01:00:06):
That's what I'm saying. Like I'm dating Giles and Jenny.
That's what I'm saying, I'm also dating Drew and Spike.
That's my polycue. Anyway, what was I saying? And I
mean it tells such a wonderful story too, because like
she is juggling not only being a student but also
(01:00:27):
a slayer and also a daughter and also a friend.
Like this girl needs to study, but she also deserves
to let loose with her friends every once in a while.
And that scene with her like desperately trying to cram
French in the bronze and Xander coming up to them
being like, come on, you guys, it's been six minutes,
(01:00:48):
Like let's dance. Oh my god. I just love that Buffy.
I really care for her, and I feel like no
one is no one's watching her back like I want
them to.
Speaker 1 (01:00:57):
And miss girl is too good a person, because let
me tell you, I would to kick Sheila's ask to
the curb. Oh the way she.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
Cares way too much about Shila. She Lea doesn't give
a shit about her.
Speaker 1 (01:01:07):
I'd be like, so, actually, Sheila, I'm expelling you. I'm
performing a citizens expulsion.
Speaker 2 (01:01:13):
You're expelled, Like no, I'd be like Snyder, I have
dirt on Sheila, Say take you see her with sunglasses
in daytime.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
She's hung over, bitch, expel.
Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
Her seriously, see me in the gap go she.
Speaker 1 (01:01:27):
Was pissing me off.
Speaker 2 (01:01:29):
No I know.
Speaker 1 (01:01:30):
So Snyder gives us ultimatum that Sheila and Buffy are
the two largest problem students in school, and he says,
I'm going to expel one of you, and it's going
to be a competition. You both have to help with
the Pta Knights.
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
And whoever nasty work Snyder.
Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
Yeah, and whoever does a better job doesn't get expelled.
And Buffy, being the angel that she is, is working
as hard as she can and covering for Sheila, and Sheila,
being the selfish asshole that she is, is partying all
night and then showing up to school hung over and
not helping Buffy at all. Buffy covers her absence by
being like, oh, Sheila ran out to get paint supplies
(01:02:06):
for us. I would have said, I don't know. Check
check and see where me Pie is. I bet you'll
find Sheila.
Speaker 2 (01:02:13):
Making out hell Pie.
Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
I was a little bit obsessed with Sheila. I hate her,
but I also was obsessed that she has one of
my favorite lines in the entire episode, which is when
she's walking with the two dudes that she meets, the
brons Dell and Drew two back to back amazing lines
when she goes see your Dell and Drew, which one's Dell? Wait,
don't tell me, let me guess Dell's the one with
(01:02:39):
the tattoos, and then immediately after she says my favorite
line of the episode, which is, you're not lying about
having a Cadillac, are you? Because I'm crazy about a
cad I'm crazy about a cad I'm crazy about.
Speaker 2 (01:02:54):
A cat doing that like Late Nightly nineties, early two thousands,
like Lizzie McGuire.
Speaker 1 (01:02:59):
Holes Hillary Duff.
Speaker 2 (01:03:03):
Yeah, it's a blueprint. Actually, it's so awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:03:07):
I'm great is actually doing. Sheila your vampire slayer, and
that's what Harry's talking about.
Speaker 2 (01:03:12):
No, seriously, oh my god, Sheila. No. I also not
to mention like she stabbed her teacher with pruning shears,
What the hell? I also I appreciate too that, Wow, Buffy,
she is a way better person than me. She even
like lets her go at the end with like as
a vampire, she gets to live her life as a vampire.
Speaker 1 (01:03:31):
Now, I know that was weird and also a bit
of a missed opportunity because I think it'd be fun
to see her again.
Speaker 2 (01:03:35):
Yeah, I know, but honestly, like maybe like Sheila would
do better as a vampire. Not to say anyone would
do better as a vampire, but maybe she's like cut
out for it. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:03:43):
I mean, like I think she emotionally would. I also
think that she's going to kill people. I don't think
the world's going to get better. I know she's already
killing teachers, but I was thinking, Snyder was like, one
of you is getting expelled. Maybe Buffy's mindset was if
I kill she there's no one to expel, so I
get expelled. If I leave Sheila as a vampire, then
(01:04:06):
vampire Sheila will get expelled and I'll be fine. And
that's why Buffy let her run off.
Speaker 2 (01:04:12):
Yeah, absolutely perfect, It's exactly what happened. That's what buff
That's what Buffy went up. I'm gonna LaVey.
Speaker 1 (01:04:18):
You see, I read all that in her face. I
know that's what Sarah Michelle Gell And honestly, now that.
Speaker 2 (01:04:22):
You're saying it, I'm like, well, of course I saw
that too. I'm just you know, I'm putting words to it. Yeah,
damn Shila, Amen.
Speaker 1 (01:04:29):
Pye, Hey, but that line is so oh my gosh.
The lead up to that line, first of all, the
name meat Pie, oh is so she's in with the
wrong crowd is so perfect, Like I don't need to
see the I don't need to see this man to
know that he is an asshole fifteen years older.
Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
Than her and massive teenagers fucking freak yes, fuck you
meat Pie, get away from Sheila exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:05:00):
He's one of those people that everyone his age knows
he's a loser, so he has to hang out with
seventeen year olds and be like, oh boy, you beer.
Speaker 2 (01:05:09):
I'm a loser ass for resiously.
Speaker 1 (01:05:12):
And the leader to that line Buffy and Sheila walking
out and Buffy being like, okay, so we could meet
on this day and we can make the banner and
this colors and YadA, YadA YadA, and Chila goes, yeah,
sure whatever, hey me by.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
Oh my god, she like, get away from this man.
I'm begging you, girl.
Speaker 1 (01:05:33):
I hope Shela turned me Bye into a vampire and
they are now the like white trash Spike and Drew.
Speaker 2 (01:05:39):
Oh very that very and I hope she loses his
ass in like twenty years too.
Speaker 1 (01:05:43):
I feel like Spike and Drew are like, maybe already
white trash just British.
Speaker 2 (01:05:48):
Yeah, British white trash.
Speaker 1 (01:05:49):
Yeah, what's that?
Speaker 2 (01:05:51):
What's is there a word for that? I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:05:55):
I don't know. I'm not British.
Speaker 2 (01:05:56):
Hey, British people sound off? No, seriously, sheilo anyway, that's
kind of.
Speaker 1 (01:06:09):
Going back to Joyce Buffy.
Speaker 2 (01:06:10):
Going back to Joyce Buffy.
Speaker 1 (01:06:11):
I like joiceing this episode because I like that arc.
You know, we start with Joys being like, I don't
want to be disappointed in you again, and then for
the episode to end with essentially all the suspicions that
Joyce had about Buffy were true. Her principle was like,
she sucks, I hate her and I want to expel her,
and she cuts class and she causes problems and she
(01:06:32):
starts fight and fights in yah, YadA YadA, and yet
for Joyce to end the episode with the attitude of
I don't actually care about how to need that stuff
because I have a daughter who can handle herself in
a crisis and thinks about other people first, and that
is worth more than grades to me. I really love
that arc. I think it's really beautiful and I also
(01:06:54):
like that I at least kind of got the vibe
the Joyce talks to us. He tells her all this
bad stuff about Buffy and she's all mad, and then
she ends up in a hostage crisis with Snyder and
sees what an asshole he is and then she's like, oh, actually,
I don't give two craps what this means. My daughter
nothing exactly like you, Sard. Yeah, yeah, I really really
(01:07:16):
loved that that art, and I am a big fan
of Joyce in this episode.
Speaker 2 (01:07:20):
Yeah, no, I get that. I definitely was so. I mean,
it's so hard to hear the thing she says before,
and I mean, of course that's my Buffy, get behind me,
But I agree. And I think that there's something so
special about your parents seeing you as a fully realized person,
maybe for the first time, or they realize that you
have like a full life beyond them and that they have,
(01:07:43):
you know, raised you well enough to handle yourself. And
I'm sure like that filled her with so much pride
and it was just so beautiful and also like to
have it literally, I was fucking sobbing, like to have
Joyce at the end come in and save her, like
Joyce with no slayer power, only with like the love
for her daughter that she has coming in and putting
(01:08:05):
herself in harm's way, just like being inspired by her
own daughter to come in and help how she could.
It was so beautiful, Oh my lands.
Speaker 1 (01:08:15):
Which also, and I'm about to contradict something I said
earlier here, I love that is also a main theme
of this show. In that scene before Joyce comes and
decides to not be head Spike in front of her daughter,
but instead a smack him on the head. Hey, A choice,
a choice, we are shown that Spike is about to
(01:08:38):
kill Buffy. Yes, that if Joyce had not shut up
at that moment, Spike had the upper hand and Buffy
would have died. And then Spike in the next scene
is talking to Drew and says something along the lines
of a slayer with family and friends that wasn't on
the brochure. Uh huh. And this is a common theme
(01:08:59):
in this show, and that what separates Buffy from Slayers
past is that Slayers before it's always been Oh, this
is a really crucial role. This needs to be your
entire life, whereas Buffy is determined to have a life
on top of it and that actually ends up being
her superpower because since she has a normal life, she
(01:09:21):
has a support system and that helps her both like
it helps keep her safe, it also helps her be
emotionally regulated, Like it actually makes her better at being
a slayer, which is me contradicting when I was like,
why don't the Watchers just pull her out of school?
It's like her attending school and having to plan the
PTA meeting is actually what is making her a better
(01:09:41):
slayer because she is building these connections with people and
is building an army around her that can help her
and keep her feet on the ground.
Speaker 2 (01:09:49):
And yeah, god, we could all take a page out
of that book.
Speaker 1 (01:09:52):
Hey, it takes a village, baby, it takes.
Speaker 2 (01:09:56):
And like, what am I doing? That is like distracting
me from like building up my Like what's too important
in my life that I'm like not making friends or
like not spending time with the people I love, Like
that is the thing that's going to save me in
the end.
Speaker 1 (01:10:09):
Yeah, And that I feel like is one of the
main themes of the show. Buy the Vampire Slayer. Having
a community yeah will save you.
Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
Yeah, because it does. Yeah, that's beautiful, what a beautiful thought.
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:10:24):
I also find it. I'm fine with it because Joyce
saying stay the hell away from my daughter is such
a great moment. I am a little bit like Spike
really just gave up, like he was about to kill
Buffy's ass, and then he gets one auchie on the
head and he's like, oh, actually, I believe it.
Speaker 2 (01:10:43):
It's like, actually, Drew, I almost got decapitated by a
regular woman.
Speaker 1 (01:10:48):
Yeah, that is embarrassing. He turned around and was like, oh,
miss suburban mom just hit me in the back of
the head. That's humiliating.
Speaker 2 (01:10:57):
He should, I mean, it was humiliating. You look regardulous, embarrassing,
shouting out. Some amazing Cordia moments willow in Cordelia being
stuck in the supply closet for hours no one notices
they're gone, and then Cordelia praying and saying, I'll never
(01:11:20):
be mean to anyone ever again, unless it's that time
of the month, in which case you and I both
know I can't be held liable for that. I said,
that's my queen, that's my icon, period. No. I love
and Cordelia had so many fun moments too, of like
talking to Buffy and also like being involved in like
making steaks in her being like no, actually, I'm so bored,
(01:11:44):
I'm gonna go. And then also so many moments too
of her saying mean things to Buffy. But I don't
think she meant it to be mean. She's genuinely saying
that truthfully, Like she's like, well, I thought like Spike
was a big, mean guy, like this isn't gonna last long,
Like not that I don't believe you, but I mean,
like that's just kind of how the cookie crumbles. And
then even where she's like like, yeah, you do have
(01:12:07):
a lot of oil, Like she didn't say that to
be mean, She's making an observation. Really no, I definitely
got a vibe of like, no, she's just like trying
to give her skincare advice, like your mom looks good,
What the hell is your problem?
Speaker 1 (01:12:20):
Then Buffy is like Cordelia, I have all these different
I have slaying in life in school, and they don't
mix there like oil and water and something else that
doesn't mix. And then Cordelia says, yeah, I can see
the oil. I feel like she was being amgirl. I
agree with the Spikes.
Speaker 2 (01:12:36):
I think she is a mean girl. I don't think
she meant it. Personally, I'm getting the vibe of she said,
oh oil, She's like, yeah, I see that. I think
in her mind, she's also spinning a lot of plates
and she has the time to kill about the oil
on her face, and she's like, Buffy, what the fuck
is your problem?
Speaker 1 (01:12:54):
I agree. I also think that she said that to
her buffy feelings. I agree with the Spikes that when
she's like, oh, I think if what you said about
Spike is pretty true, that's gonna be a quick fight.
I do think that that was not intended to be mean.
She just was like, well, yeah, you're gonna die.
Speaker 2 (01:13:09):
He's you know, he's mean guy, You're scared.
Speaker 1 (01:13:14):
But I think she's twisting the knife a bit with
the skincare stuff. But I I love having Cordelia be
a person who is helping the scoobies out and yet
continually is like, yeah, you guys are like kind of
beneath me. Though yeah, like, obviously I'm going to help out,
but like, you guys are kind of beneath me. I
(01:13:35):
love that. I'm glad that she is not kind hearted
suddenly and that she is still No.
Speaker 2 (01:13:39):
I agree she's not kind hearted. I think she's mean yeah,
but I think that's just her nature. Yeah, I think
she has to try.
Speaker 1 (01:13:46):
Speaking of Willow, I have in my notes, I think
you will appreciate this. I have in my notes. Willow
really given Jan Brady with her walk to the fruit punch.
Speaker 2 (01:13:58):
Bowl because this I didn't even see. She's got.
Speaker 1 (01:14:02):
She's got the Jan Brady from those nineties Brady Bunch
movies where her hair is straight behind her and then
she got a headband and she is doing the Jan
Brady walk that you just did, where she's making her
hair switch behind her.
Speaker 2 (01:14:13):
Like, I love that. I love that so much. She's
so cute in that little green dress. Oh my god,
one of my favorite Willow outfits. I was so sweet.
Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
Talking about Xander and Angel, Yes, I want to shout out.
I like Xander more the most. I don't like Angel,
but I do think these two characters are at their
best when they are paired together.
Speaker 2 (01:14:37):
No, I agree. I'm like, it's given kind of brothers.
Speaker 1 (01:14:40):
Yeah, their constant bickering is very fun. That is such
a great point. It is very much giving brothers.
Speaker 2 (01:14:47):
Yeah. Like even like while they were walking together, I
was like, oh my god, you two kind of love
each other.
Speaker 1 (01:14:54):
And Xander obviously is going to be a smart Alec
and is going to make fun of a Angel. He
does that with everyone, but specifically what it brings out
an Angel who is probably so self serious, and for
Angel to be like this little dweeb annoys me so
much that moment when Xander is like, well, what would
(01:15:17):
you have done if Spike tried to bite my neck
and it just goes, well, then we would have known
that he bought it. Angel has never shown up snark, yeah,
anyone else, but he cannot stand this little punk.
Speaker 2 (01:15:31):
It's so funny, even like to be so willing to
put this kid in harm's way. It's the most personality
we've ever seen from this motherfucker. I'm obsessed. No, I agree.
I think those two pair together. I think it's another
breath of fresh air. Like, yeah, I really, I thought
(01:15:51):
that was really fun. Should we go to the Girls
of the Hour?
Speaker 1 (01:15:57):
Spike in Tree?
Speaker 2 (01:15:58):
Yeah? Okay, yeah, okay, how do we even begin? What
are your thoughts on Spike and Drew? Tell me what's up?
This is my issue?
Speaker 1 (01:16:11):
Is I like I don't know, kind of like did
I say stuff too early at the beginning of the episode.
I really love Spike and Drew. I think they're incredible.
I think they're a needed change to this show. I
don't know you talk about them a bit.
Speaker 2 (01:16:31):
Okay, I just love these two so much. They are
so opposite from all the vampires we've met before, even
like even Darla, who I think is like the vampire
with the most personality we've met so far. They are
so different from other vampires. They're also you know, we've
(01:16:51):
made jokes that the other vampires are obsessed with each other,
but these two are like genuinely obsessed with each other.
And like I were seconds way from from boning down,
boning down in front of the entire order no, and
I didn't care. I thought the vibe that they will
be boning down in front of them and they were like,
(01:17:12):
we're gonna do this in front of you to show
you how crazy we are and don't fuck with us.
I think it's like a very silly be I mean,
they're flexing that they have like ties to each other.
They are like a package deal. Fuck with one, you're
(01:17:32):
fucking with the other one. Like it's scary. I'm sure
it's scary, and like a and the vibe that we've
gotten from a lot of the vampires is like, yes,
we're talking to the Order of a realius. There. They
are a group, but like the Master cares about Darla,
but it's not like he's gonna he's not gonna die
for Darla. Yeah, these who are dying for each other,
and it's that's scary, that's unsettling. So I'm sure it's unsettling,
(01:17:54):
like as the Order really us and like, you know,
it's also so interest to watching on this rewatch. You know,
we were reminded by Giles that Spike is only two hundred,
which in terms of other vampires, I mean, they were
all at the fucking you know, Crucifixion, Like we know
Angelous is a million years old, like and he's only
(01:18:16):
like was he three hundred? He's like yeah something like that, Yeah,
something like that. But he's only two hundred, so in
vampire years, he's pretty young. So he's really reckless. Like
and this is you know, he's nicknamed William the Bloody,
like he is like known for torture. Like immediately we
are reminded how we are told how freaky these people
(01:18:38):
are and then shown how freaky they are, like liking
blood off each other's faces like this is spooky, oooky, dookie.
I love it.
Speaker 1 (01:18:46):
And also Buffy certainly has been in danger before. Gonna says,
the Master killed her, killed her for a few minutes.
But we have always existed in a universe where ultimately
Slayer comes up on top. Yes, and so to introduce
a character who canonically has killed two Slayers.
Speaker 2 (01:19:06):
Before, that's scary.
Speaker 1 (01:19:08):
We have never heard whisper up to this point of
a Slayer losing a fight.
Speaker 2 (01:19:13):
No, I think it's awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:19:17):
No, I it really ups the stakes. It makes him
feel special, and that is something that could you know,
sometimes on shows that have these Monsters of a Week
Monsters of the Week, they will introduce a new monster
and be like this is the most powerful monster ever,
and then they get dealt with quickly, and so it
starts to become meaningless. But I will say no spoilers,
(01:19:37):
but Spike and Drew are executed well enough in this
show that the fact that Spike has killed two Slayers
never feels like they were over selling him. Like they
really set out to make these two characters special and
memorable and as threatening as the Master, who was you know,
(01:19:59):
like the King of vampires. Yeah, the oldest vampire ever,
and it on paper seems like that would be a
hard thing to follow up on, and yet they fully yeah,
knocked out of the park. No, fully eclipse the Master.
As far as iconography with the show immediately.
Speaker 2 (01:20:17):
Yeah, And I mean we talked about this a little
bit before, but I'll say it again because it's important,
like to have this group of vampires who are so
obsessed with like order and rules and honor and like,
you know, fucking so many fucking prophecies, and to have
two people who like are just doing it because they
(01:20:39):
want to. They're gonna fuck each other in front of
other people because they want to. They're gonna drive through
big signs because they want to. They're in smoke secrets
they want to.
Speaker 1 (01:20:49):
They're gonna blindfold their weird little dolls because they want to.
Speaker 2 (01:20:51):
They're gonna they're gonna collect weird little dolls because they
want to. And they're gonna kill slayers because they want to.
Like it's like hedonistic, it's fine, and it's sexy, it's scary.
It is so oh my god, I'm obsessed, so fucking
fun and they are freaky and I like them, oh
(01:21:12):
my god. And they're funny too, I love it.
Speaker 1 (01:21:16):
And then ending the episode on obviously we already talked
about it Spike killing the anointed one, saying we're gonna
have a little less ritual, a little more fun, but
then specifically the ending line being let's go see what's
on TV and then walking off. Yeah, I feel like
it really drives that point home. They didn't take over
the order for realius because they were jealous of the power,
(01:21:37):
because their power hungry. Literally they were just like this
little too stuffy, it's not very fun. Yeah, anyways, now
that that's out of the way, let's go like find
the next pleasure that we want to party.
Speaker 2 (01:21:48):
That's some fun. And like they're here at the hell
Mouth for a reason, like Drew was attacked by like
an angry mob. Like they are here to like settle down,
so to speak, in a way, and like you know,
to flex their muscles on top of the helm mouth
and like make a name for themselves in a way.
But it's not like they're not trying to replace the
(01:22:10):
Master in any way. They just want to function it
up and everyone else is too boring and so they're
going to take charge, which like.
Speaker 1 (01:22:17):
Drew's sickness mm hmm, so they got attacked by a
mob and Prague.
Speaker 2 (01:22:23):
Yeah, and so now she's weak, that's the vibey god. Yeah,
it's just like it made her weak and so okay, yeah,
like she was injured maybe like yeah, she's like.
Speaker 1 (01:22:35):
A little bedridden. Yeah great, sure, I'm kind of like,
how do you make a vampire a week? Did they
like do a curse on her?
Speaker 2 (01:22:44):
Because that was because she's also like, you know, she's psychic,
so she sees the Slayer. Maybe she's like psychically cursed,
like she put she took like ten points of psychic
damage and she's trying to heal.
Speaker 1 (01:22:54):
There you go, Yes, we figured.
Speaker 2 (01:22:57):
It out there it is, and who knows, maybe like
some witch in Prague really fucked her up.
Speaker 1 (01:23:03):
Yeah. Another choice they make with Spike and Drew to
give them narrative weight even though they aren't, you know,
even though they're just like two randoms instead of some
dude who has an army is and whoa, whoa, whoa.
This is the best decision they ever made, and it
will in fact change the entire course of this TV show.
(01:23:24):
The decision that Angel sneaks on with Xander. Spike sees
him and they know each other yeah, and we find
out that these two characters have some sort of pass together.
It is not something that we can talk a lot
about right now, but like, where is the Master's past
(01:23:48):
with Angel? Was just like I know that Angel exists,
and like Darla, let's get Angel back on our side.
Speaker 2 (01:23:55):
Yeah, there is.
Speaker 1 (01:23:56):
A clear emotional relationship with Spike where Spike is so
angry and devastated when he finds out that Angel has
gone soft and says you were my sire, you were
my Yoda, and Angel mentions to Spike like I trained
you better than this, and that mystery of Spike saying
(01:24:18):
you were my sire, and then the episode ending and
Xander being like, and what did he mean by sire?
What's a sire? Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:24:26):
The journey that we are in for, Oh, it's so great.
Oh it's so great. Oh it's so great.
Speaker 1 (01:24:33):
And as boring as I find Angel, he does have
the most exciting backstory of like any character in the show.
Speaker 2 (01:24:39):
So I can't even speak on that because I have
so many feelings. Oh my god, it's just immediately too
like we know so much about Spike before we even
hm realize that they know each other like that, and
to like you know he's calling him a name we've
only heard a little bit, like to have that immediate
(01:25:00):
rapport with him, You don't understand. I'm obsessed.
Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
Oh God, I also want to shout out that wins.
Spike and Angel are first talking and Spike says like,
so what about this slayer? And Angel says, I act
like a puppy dog and she leaves me alone and
lets me feed, and Spike goes. People still fall for
that an Rice routine, an Rice empire. That is them
(01:25:34):
directly shouting out that Angel is a bit of a
play on Louis from and the vampire.
Speaker 2 (01:25:42):
I love hey, very fun.
Speaker 1 (01:25:45):
That would be like that would be like if Bella
Swan we met the colons, and the colons were like,
we don't we're vegetarians. We don't feed on people. We
feed on animals. And then Bella went, oh the old
Buffy vampire slayer routine.
Speaker 2 (01:26:00):
Oh it's like Angel right like this is giving Angel, No,
I love you. The vampires are loved that he got
a soul no I love Oh my god, And I
also that moment. I'm not gonna say it now because
I'm gonna save it for later. And by later, I
mean the gay is part of the.
Speaker 1 (01:26:18):
Episode, Okay, because I was like, I I got ya,
I got ya, I got ya.
Speaker 2 (01:26:25):
Okay. No, it's just immediately so fun and breathes also
new life into Angel like this to see like also
that like kind of boastful vampire side of him, even
in just a glance, very exciting.
Speaker 1 (01:26:38):
Yeah. And I we all know on paper that Angel
has a passed and he killed these people he got
put out of this curse. Yeah, but it's a separate
thing to know that and then to see someone who
knew him when he was that and how Angel interacts
with that person and how they interact back. Yeah, and
(01:27:00):
just you guys, it's gonna be fun. Now. The other
gag of this episode is the reveal the principal Snyder,
knows that vampires exist, knows that there's like hellme ouse
stuff happening. The police chief also knows, and it's a
massive cover up to just keep pretending that it's like
(01:27:22):
gangs and drugs and regular mortal world stuff going on.
This episode is doing so much and this is why
I said it feels like this series premiere a Buffy
the Vampires Layer. A lot of this season one plot
is fantastic, but it's pretty self contained in season one
absolutely kind of like once the Master's dead, you don't
(01:27:45):
really hear about the Master anymore. Like the anointed One
getting killed in this episode is kind of the last
shadow of the Master leaving, and he will be mentioned
again in the future, but like he doesn't really have
a hold on the show. But we are setting so
many things in motion in this episode that we'll continue
on for years and years and years in this show.
(01:28:06):
The reveal that there is a massive conspiracy going on
to cover up the supernatural stuff happening is anidel.
Speaker 2 (01:28:14):
Oh my god, it is awesome. No, it's so tight,
and it's also like it's another element of it's scary too,
because you know, it's so funny, like Buffy is I
feel like holding so much of the shit on her back,
like carries the weight of keeping the school safe and
(01:28:37):
keeping the town safe on her back, and like not
only do like of course some of the adults don't
know about it, and they are just like they're not
understanding and they're like you know, writing things off, but
especially people in power covering it up and still not
assisting in what's going on, Like why that's like, that's nefarious,
(01:28:57):
that's freaky, that's freaky, and let me I'm gonna say it.
I'm trying to coin this escata. All Sunnydale cops are
dumb asses, and Snider, you're included, wink wink, fuckers.
Speaker 1 (01:29:11):
I feel like I feel like this is like not
fully a SCATA because a SCATA was like, Oh, they're
so stupid, they don't realize what's going on, And now
it's no, Actually it's even worse. They do know. It's
a little bit more like real cops where they do
know what's going on.
Speaker 2 (01:29:26):
You know they do, and they're covering it up and
there being bought out, yes for what other for a reason? Yeah,
for reasons. I don't know. No, it's nefarious. It's spooky,
and like the powers that be literally putting people in
danger and especially women in danger because they for whatever
fucking reason. And we'll see more. I guess we'll see.
I don't know, but anyway, and pissed me off.
Speaker 1 (01:29:51):
Snyder is brought to Sunnydale specifically and is like is
hand picked to go to sunny because it is a
problem school. And now to find out that Snyder is
aware of the supernatural stuff that it feels like he
was brought to this school to kind of be the
watchman over the.
Speaker 2 (01:30:11):
Schoolah and okay, listen, So he knows that vampires exist,
how we don't know how much he knows. But does
he know about Buffy?
Speaker 1 (01:30:22):
This is something I was going to bring up. It's
another thing to watch out for of Is it like
he knows that Buffy is the Slayer and he's working
he has nefarious purposes and is trying to make her
life harder or is.
Speaker 2 (01:30:36):
He aware so she can work harder?
Speaker 1 (01:30:39):
Or is he aware of supernatural stuff but is not
aware all the Buffy is tied to it and literally
is just like she's a punk kid, like Sheila's a
punk kid and she's pissing me off.
Speaker 2 (01:30:49):
Hey, who knows?
Speaker 1 (01:30:51):
Because it's even when when Jenny finds out that Buffy
is the Slayer and her line is are you sure
it's her? She's so small, She's a little Buffy is
clearly not even for people who know. And there's also
vampires who mentioned that the Slayer is a fairy tale, Like,
clearly not everyone knows what a slayer is. Not everyone
(01:31:13):
believes in slayers existing, and then even those who believe
in Slayers, Buffy does not fit what they would expect
a Slayer to be. Yeah, so it's a world of possibilities.
Speaker 2 (01:31:23):
Yeah, I guess. Well. I mean that's something we should
keep an eye out on, Like Principal Snyder in with
the Cops, it's.
Speaker 1 (01:31:30):
Something to keep an eye out to see what we think,
to see what we think. His thoughts on Buffy are
if it is a punk kid, or if it is yeah,
a Slayer that I am trying to hinder. Yeah, or
like you said, help by getting her kicked o school.
Speaker 2 (01:31:48):
I just kind of said that. I don't think that's true.
He's a bad guy. It's always putting her in like
in school suspension and shit.
Speaker 1 (01:31:55):
Yeah, what are final thoughts we have about this episode?
Speaker 2 (01:32:06):
I love the Order of Aurelius.
Speaker 1 (01:32:08):
I'm so glad that they are largely done away with it,
Spike and Juror taking over. I do like that. I
feel like this episode is making fun of them the
entire time. Yeah, we already mentioned this. It starts out
they have dwindled the numbers. They're in a random warehouse,
and yet like literally the Master, the King of Vampires
failed at defeating Buffy. Ye, and this random ass vampire
(01:32:33):
is like, I can do it, and the anointed one
is like, sure, you do it. I just I think
it's funny that the Order of Aurelius for fifteen episodes
has failed every single time, and yet every time some
random ass vampire stands up, they're like, yeah, you get
it a go, why not.
Speaker 2 (01:32:51):
Fine, We're going to get her. They very much are giving.
Speaker 1 (01:32:57):
Delusions of grandeur, big self image with no credentials to
back it up. Yeah, And I think that's fun.
Speaker 2 (01:33:02):
It's so fun to have Spike come in and also
be kind of the first vampire vampire, I mean since
the Master who's like given her a real run for
her money, Like it's scary.
Speaker 1 (01:33:14):
And he's just some guy who's in it for the
love of the game. He's not like part of an
order and been trained for this, and YadA YadA. I
also want a shout out I thought of you, because
there is that vampire who's helping who's helping Spike in
the school, who says, let me, let me get the
(01:33:36):
exact line that he says, who says, like we cut
the power, nobody got out, and he's kind of like
Spike's right hand man. That's an Adam Driver. His voice
sounds exactly like Adam Driver to me, and he's giving visually,
he's giving like twenty percent Adam Driver, but he sounds
so much like Adam Driver.
Speaker 2 (01:33:55):
I'll have to go back and watch it for a
fifth time. I like that.
Speaker 1 (01:34:01):
And then a last random observation is Spike in the
Bronze sets a trap for Buffy where he tells one
of the vampires to go find something to eat, and
then he goes up to someone with an earshot of
Buffy and is like, where's the phone. I need to
call the police. I saw a guy trying to bite
someone out back, and he talks to it. He says
(01:34:25):
that to a guy, like says to this man in
the club, someone in the alleyway is trying to bite
another human being. And then the camera shifts and that
exact guy that Spike just talked to is very happily
dancing to the music. And I just thought that was funny.
It made me giggle. Him doing this incredibly disturbing information.
Was like, well, not gonna let it bring me down.
Speaker 2 (01:34:49):
Some people like that. I don't know, Yeah, I'm not.
Speaker 1 (01:34:52):
I'm not here in a king shit.
Speaker 2 (01:34:54):
Hey, that's a King. I love that. Hey, that is
so funny too. It's also it's also so funny, like
those are the exact words to bait this girl, and
no one else gives a shit, ye whatever, so funny,
like not even Xander or Willow here at all. Like
that's how much Buffy's head is on a swivel constantly,
Poor girl.
Speaker 1 (01:35:14):
Do you have final thoughts about School Hard?
Speaker 2 (01:35:17):
I'm just a I'm so I can't even tell you
how glad I am that Spike and Drew around my screen.
You guys don't even know. I love them so much.
And this episode is just so fun. It's really fun.
I think it's one of the scariest in tone, and like,
you know, I just but it's also like so silly
(01:35:41):
and fun and never like forgets that the show is
also a comedy. I just, yeah, this episode is so fun.
I guess I should watch Diehard.
Speaker 1 (01:35:52):
I was kind of thinking that too every year.
Speaker 2 (01:35:54):
I'm like, I should watch it every year on Christmas
because everyone thinks it's a Christmas movie. Yeah, and I like,
do kind of think we like it? Oh? I'm sure.
Speaker 1 (01:36:01):
I mean I like it.
Speaker 2 (01:36:03):
I like action comedy.
Speaker 1 (01:36:04):
It's it's it's my heterophobia.
Speaker 2 (01:36:07):
Where it's no, exactly exactly like.
Speaker 1 (01:36:09):
Anything that the stray boys my age growing up really
really liked. I immediately I reject this.
Speaker 2 (01:36:16):
No, of course, we're just the same.
Speaker 1 (01:36:18):
And now as an adult, I still a lot of
it think I wouldn't like. But Diehard, I'm like, I
actually think I would have a great.
Speaker 2 (01:36:24):
Time with that. I know. I was talking to my
one other gay cousin the other day and they were like, no,
Mission Impossible is the funnest franchise ever. And I was like, dude,
I was sure, and they were like, no, seriously, you
should give it a shot. And I'm like, well no.
Speaker 1 (01:36:37):
But it was like the amount of queer people who
love Fast and Furious and they're like, no, it's can't
be so dumb.
Speaker 2 (01:36:43):
I have always wanted to watch those movies. Why the
hell what?
Speaker 1 (01:36:48):
I just like, if someone's two into cars immediately, I
can't be bothered, immediate red flag.
Speaker 2 (01:36:55):
I have seen fast ten uh huh at a family dinner.
It was like on in the back in the back
fast acts.
Speaker 1 (01:37:03):
Well, I was saying fastened because Fasten fast making a
bad joke.
Speaker 2 (01:37:09):
Okay, No, I like it them. Thank you for explaining
my favorite kind of jokes when you explain it, thank
you Fastened. No, yeah, so I mean, but also like
Rita Moreno is in that movie.
Speaker 1 (01:37:17):
There are so many actors that I'm like, you're better
than this, which then leads me to believe that they
must be.
Speaker 2 (01:37:22):
Really think.
Speaker 1 (01:37:25):
Is certainly in Fast and Furious.
Speaker 2 (01:37:27):
What the hell I'm telling.
Speaker 1 (01:37:29):
You, I think they're dumb and fun.
Speaker 2 (01:37:30):
No, maybe we'd love it. Yeah, we should at least
watch die Hard. I think Diehard is maybe a little
bit more my speed.
Speaker 1 (01:37:37):
I think there should have been a moment in this
episode when Buffy said, ka, motherfucker in period one of
the three things I know about Diehard.
Speaker 2 (01:37:44):
No, I don't think I knew that one was in
that one.
Speaker 1 (01:37:47):
That's like the catchphrase is the pKa motherfucker.
Speaker 2 (01:37:50):
See everything I know about Diehard I know from Never
Stop Blowing Up, Dimension twenty, the Dungeon and Dragons show.
I'm yeah, and like Alan Rickman's in it. Yeah, he's
the he's the Spike character, the Spike character. Okay, I
(01:38:11):
love Spike.
Speaker 1 (01:38:12):
That's school Hard.
Speaker 2 (01:38:14):
See you later, Love. We have okay part of the episode.
Speaker 1 (01:38:18):
We have so much we gotta do, we gotta do.
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (01:38:24):
Sorry, I was just trying to we gotta do death count.
Speaker 1 (01:38:25):
We gotta do best part, worst part. You gotta do
gays part.
Speaker 2 (01:38:29):
What's the order here?
Speaker 1 (01:38:31):
I don't know. We kind of were playing with where
the death count goes. Let's do the death count. Now,
here's all these people who died in this episode. Mister
I was at the crucifixion. His ass gets looking dumb ass,
Cardian and dumbass.
Speaker 2 (01:38:47):
But this man looks Dusty and.
Speaker 1 (01:38:50):
Dell and Drew. Which one's Dell? Let me guess Del's
one with the tattoos. They both die.
Speaker 2 (01:38:55):
I'm obsessed with a cad.
Speaker 1 (01:38:57):
Sheila dies and becomes a vampire, but then doesn't get
dusted because usually like Jesse was a twofer because he
died becoming a vampire and that got dusted. Sheila is
She's still out there with meat loaf, but meat Pie
with meat loaf, the singer with meat Pie doing her thing,
and I wish she had come back, Sheila, No.
Speaker 2 (01:39:14):
I know, or you being girl.
Speaker 1 (01:39:18):
Mister teacher who's too old to eat, who gets his
nuck snapped by Spike, he's dead, mister teacher or parent
who climbs through the window, and then gets pulled out
is dead, which Joyce handles that.
Speaker 2 (01:39:30):
With so much like a champ.
Speaker 1 (01:39:32):
It's like you just watched the guy dyeing front of
her eyes, and she's like, anyway, Snyder, I told you, girl.
Speaker 2 (01:39:39):
And I'm not going to decapitate that guy, and I'm.
Speaker 1 (01:39:41):
Not going to decapitate someone tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:39:44):
I'm going to keep a levelhead about me because.
Speaker 1 (01:39:46):
She is calm.
Speaker 2 (01:39:46):
That was harrowing.
Speaker 1 (01:39:48):
The vamp that Buffy falls onto from the ceiling and dust,
who I think is maybe Adam Driver. I think it
might be that one. The random vamp that she does
when she and Sheila are sneaking out up and Sheila
has the acts and then she gets scared and runs off,
and then our final death of the episode is the
annoying one.
Speaker 2 (01:40:06):
So the annoying one.
Speaker 1 (01:40:07):
We have eight deaths in School Hard Wow Ra, which
brings our let me oh my Gosh come on, which
brings our season two kill count up to sixteen yeh wow.
Speaker 2 (01:40:25):
Sixteen wow Hey kind of a lot for three episodes.
Speaker 1 (01:40:31):
And it's actually more than that because I did the
math wrong and it was nine people who died in
School Hard, so we're at seventeen I know we're really
we're really killing them quick this year.
Speaker 2 (01:40:42):
That's crazy.
Speaker 1 (01:40:42):
I mean, eight people in one episode is a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:40:45):
No, that's a lot. I mean it's giving die hard.
I guess it's giving die hard. I heard that eight
people die and die hard famously. It's not called it's
the one thing.
Speaker 1 (01:40:52):
I know. It's not called dice soft hard. A lot
of people are dying.
Speaker 2 (01:40:59):
Hard.
Speaker 1 (01:41:02):
You know what's your worst part of this episode?
Speaker 2 (01:41:04):
Worst part? Okay, okay, listen, And I mean I know
the story they're trying to tell me, so listen. Take
this with a grains salt. I understand. I understand narrative
purpose for everything. Giles and Jenny not giving a shit
about Buffy's school works, specifically driving me crazy in school.
By school work, I mean like running the PTA conference,
like what the hell? Like they can't help her in
(01:41:26):
any way. They have to be like, well, Buffy, what
are you doing? Also, no, that was pussing me off.
Speaker 1 (01:41:32):
The sign that Buffy painted was so gorgeous. It was like, wait,
maybe if you decide to stop being the sligher, you
could get into like graphic design.
Speaker 2 (01:41:40):
That was beautiful. God, I love her. It was beautiful.
And she was doing a good job, and she was
like wearing overalls and covered in paint. I love her.
I mean she is an artist's daughter, true, you know anyway,
So yeah, I think that was probably my worst part.
I just really could not understand Giles not been paying
any mind to Snyder's treatment of Buffy this episode, Like
(01:42:04):
Buffy's about to be expelled if she doesn't run an
entire event by herself, and he like has no grace
for her with that, And I mean, there's this beautiful
moment where so I'll give him his flowers just for
a minute, where Buffy goes like, if I don't make
it out of this, please make sure my mom, yeah,
makes it out, and he goes and he like he
(01:42:26):
says something that is just so lovely and like of course,
like you can count on me or something like that,
something to the effect of like you can you can
count on me, like I'll keep your family safe. So
I love you, Giles, But what the hell was that about?
And it leads me to, hey, I won't whatever I
was gonna say, that's like an oversight on the writing.
But whatever, Oh, I think I'm reading too much into
(01:42:50):
it at a certain point. So that's my worst part,
what's yours?
Speaker 1 (01:42:54):
My worst part is this is an excellent episode. I
feel like she like getting turned into a vampire doesn't
amount to anything. We have a moment of her sneaking
behind Buffy with an axe, but it doesn't actually amount
to anything. And I feel like if Sheila were to
just have been killed by Drew and then not turned,
(01:43:16):
the episode would be nearly exactly the same.
Speaker 2 (01:43:20):
Yeah, so does it feels like it this opportunity, especially
because she never comes back? Yeah, And like she like
hangs out with Drew and Spike, like she like is
like held captive in Drew's room.
Speaker 1 (01:43:35):
Like I love how you said that hangs out.
Speaker 2 (01:43:38):
I know, I mean she is hanging she's by her wrists. No,
she's like held captive, like, and I wonder if she's
like running away from them on purpose, Like why wouldn't
she join them if like Drusilla sired her, Like, I
don't know, like what what kind of familial tie does
that start?
Speaker 1 (01:43:58):
The heck is the sire?
Speaker 2 (01:44:00):
I don't know. They just kind of said it. I'm
just kind of putting it where it sounds. I know,
I just kind of said it. I don't know. I
cut it once. Yeah. No, that's an interesting part and
it's just a missed opportunity they could have done something
with that.
Speaker 1 (01:44:13):
Yeah, it's also so interesting the whole like turning people
into vampires is so interesting to me because sometimes the
show really makes it a big deal where it is
like turning someone is like adopting a child, like they
are attached to you for life, if you share this bond,
and then sometimes it really is like oh yeah, and
(01:44:37):
they just like set them loose. No, yeah, yeah, interesting
to me, But I mean the same can be true
for people with kids.
Speaker 2 (01:44:46):
I guess, so that's true. That's true.
Speaker 1 (01:44:48):
Does Drew stay up at night crying because her daughter
ran away from home and she's like, oh my gosh,
that's my little girl out there.
Speaker 2 (01:44:53):
I mean, it's so interesting you're using a parent child metaphor.
I also think it's I think it could be.
Speaker 1 (01:45:00):
You think she wanted her to be their third Yeah.
I mean, I mean the way that these vampires talk
about it, it is both is oh.
Speaker 2 (01:45:12):
Yeah bo yeah, that's family, and that's on fast and furious.
Speaker 1 (01:45:16):
I remember instances where they refer to people as like
my grandmother, and then also like canonically have hooked up
with that person.
Speaker 2 (01:45:27):
It is the loss of vampire family. Are a little looser.
Speaker 1 (01:45:32):
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, so like her daughter girlfriend. What's
your best part?
Speaker 2 (01:45:38):
Best part, Bro, Spike, Yeah, Drusilla, Yeah, honey, I'm home. Yeah,
these two, thank god they're here.
Speaker 1 (01:45:49):
You I.
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
The the I love that fucking man so much. He
is a freak. She is a freak. I love them down.
I'm so glad they're on my show finally. I feel
like I've been sitting on a bomb up piece of
informa shame. They're my, like one of my favorite parts
(01:46:14):
of this whole TV show period, and I'm so rather
finely here. Oh yeah, and Spike is so fun. He
is so scary, he's so sexy. I love that man.
I love that man, and thank god he's here.
Speaker 1 (01:46:30):
What's your best part? Spike and Drew? For all the
reasons you just said, specifically them killing the Anointed One,
I just I remember the first time watching this show,
the sigh of relief I let out when the Anointed
One got killed off. I was just like, I wasn't
digging the Master as a teenager anyway, and then with
the Master going I was like, I'm especially not digging
(01:46:52):
this little punk.
Speaker 2 (01:46:53):
No, he put a freaky girl obsessed with dolls on
my screen. That's my girl.
Speaker 1 (01:46:59):
I said, you what a tragic, powerful woman in this show,
and you expect me to care about a little boy are.
Speaker 2 (01:47:04):
In a long white dress and freaking nails and obsessed
with no and you go licks boys? Boy who licks
blood off her boyfriend's face? Changed my life? Actually, yeah,
I was revocably changed.
Speaker 1 (01:47:20):
So I just think it's one of one of the
best decisions the show ever made was to be like,
screw the order for realius. Actually, Spike and Drew overthrow
them and now they are going to be fun and
crazy and hedonistic and that's the show now exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:47:35):
It's great, so great, all.
Speaker 1 (01:47:38):
Right, Lena, could you give us a gayest part jingle?
And then your gayest part?
Speaker 2 (01:47:42):
Yeah, the gayest part of the episode.
Speaker 1 (01:47:47):
That was gorgeous.
Speaker 2 (01:47:48):
Thanks. It was really different from what we've done before,
and I really liked that. My gayest part easy.
Speaker 1 (01:47:55):
You know what I'm gonna say, is it Angel Spike?
Speaker 2 (01:47:59):
Yes, girl, they about kissed. This is Challenger's Freaky Realness
where Xander is bent over and the same and they
both go in at the same time. To feed on Xander,
and I said, cowards do it.
Speaker 1 (01:48:14):
Kiss And if they had, it wouldn't have been the
first time.
Speaker 2 (01:48:19):
Period. Well, I mean, on you, guys. If you are
going to a know each other and be vampires for
several years together and you don't hook up, I'm serious.
Wake up, I'm serious. Be bisexual already. Hello, grow up.
I'm going to say this every time. Grow up. No,
(01:48:39):
it was. It was sexually charged and very exciting to
my mind and body. I really liked it. What's the
giesst part of the episode to you?
Speaker 1 (01:48:45):
Its part of the episode to me our Spike and
Drew are giving we saw you across the bar and.
Speaker 2 (01:48:50):
We yeah, no, seriously, it's like they really I agree.
Speaker 1 (01:48:56):
Sheila was supposed to be their third, like they were
really looking for someone.
Speaker 2 (01:49:00):
I mean, this girl is chained up in Drusilla's bedroom
and Spike brings her down and says, eat this girl eat.
Speaker 1 (01:49:10):
He says eat something something, Terriusilla eats something. Wow, And
you know that Spike and Drew hooked up. And Sheila
was like, no, that's actually sad. That's actually sad.
Speaker 2 (01:49:27):
But if it was me, I would.
Speaker 1 (01:49:36):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:49:36):
I love them.
Speaker 1 (01:49:37):
I love them down Anyways, they are so insanely horny
for this kid's TV show, like the like the the
page is, you know, like obviously like they're into each other.
Of course, their performances, it's freaking nasty. What's going on nasty.
(01:49:58):
And the fact is like the don't even kiss in
the episode, and it is giving the vibe of I
feel like I've mentioned these kids before. There would be
couples in my high school that used to sit in
the hallway, like one of them would be kicked out
of class and would be sitting at a desk in the
hallway and they'd text their significant other and they would
(01:50:21):
be just sitting alone in the hallway with their foreheads
pressed against each other, like rotating their heads around but
never having their lips touching. And I sincerely was like,
I would rather you make out, like I wouldn't freaky. Yeah,
it's actually making me feel disgusting having to watch this,
(01:50:41):
and that is very much Spike and Drew. I'm like, yeah,
just kiss already, Like, oh my gosh, it's so funny.
Speaker 2 (01:50:47):
I didn't realize they didn't kiss.
Speaker 1 (01:50:49):
They might kiss, but I know, specifically in that first
scene where they look like they're about to bone down
in front of the order for really is they do
not kiss. I did clock that they get close like
two or three times with their lips never touched.
Speaker 2 (01:51:02):
We saw you from across the farm.
Speaker 1 (01:51:04):
And we really like your vibe. That's what Spike when
he was at the Bronx, he was like, I need
to spy on this slayer. And then also if I
see someone who I like their vibe, I'll bring them
home too. And then he saw Sheila.
Speaker 2 (01:51:17):
God, that's so funny.
Speaker 1 (01:51:19):
Yeah, hey me, next, me, next, Well, that's it. That's
the show.
Speaker 2 (01:51:25):
Baby.
Speaker 1 (01:51:26):
Have you got thoughts on school hard if you think
the James Marsters, if you're British and you have opinions.
Speaker 2 (01:51:31):
On his accent, please let us know.
Speaker 1 (01:51:33):
Send them to Recovering Gleek at gmail dot com.
Speaker 2 (01:51:35):
Please please please.
Speaker 1 (01:51:36):
We don't have your regular schedule programming to read you
some emails. Uh so we're gonna take it back in time.
So goodbye to Spike and Drew. Say hello to some
assembly required, remember her, I sure do.
Speaker 2 (01:51:52):
Let's hear first from Meghan.
Speaker 1 (01:51:55):
Dear In and LPC. Hello. My name is Megan, she
her from Maryland. I'm a longtime gleek. First time Buffy Watcher,
I'm writing in to say that I absolutely loved this episode.
Giles practicing on how to ask out Miss Calendar, Xander's jokes,
landing the twist that Darryl is alive and is now
(01:52:16):
a Frankenstein. This was a rocks As a first time watcher,
this is my favorite episode of the series. Oh, I
love I two ship Giles and Miss Calendar. Now, I
do want to clarify that Xander has had funny jokes
in previous episodes. It's just that Nicholas Brendan's delivery of
them does not do it for me. This time. He
(01:52:36):
genuinely made me laugh out loud. All in all, I
am enjoying these Monster of the Week episodes. When I
was in high school, my brother and I watched this
animated Spider Man show together and I did not enjoy
watching Spider Man fighting the villain of the week. Instead,
I was more invested in the drama and relationships that
were going on in Peter Parker's life as a high
school student. As a horror fan and someone who has
(01:52:56):
become invested in the Buffy characters in their relationships, I'm
getting the best of both worlds. In many ways, Buffy
is Hannah Montana. I am enjoying this next chapter of
you both with the podcast, and I look forward to
the episodes every week. I hope you all have a
good week. Consential forehead kisses Megan. Megan, I'm the rail
(01:53:17):
that this is your favorite episode. It really was. It
came as a shock to us. Yeah, no, absolutely, I
was gobsmacked by how much I enjoyed watching this episode.
Speaker 2 (01:53:28):
I agree, and especially as like a first time watcher.
It's so exciting to hear why this episode resonates so
much with you. This is thrilling. And also thank you
for watching it with us, and I'm glad you're enjoying it.
It isn't the best television show of all time. To
speak to.
Speaker 1 (01:53:44):
Your thoughts on, Sander, you know, acting can be tricky.
Acting can be tricky, and actually can be hard. I
do remember when Alex first watched Buffy back when I
was in college, and he said, because famously, although we
(01:54:04):
don't like to talk about him much on this podcast,
and rightfully so, Buffy is a creation of Joss Whedon,
who also wrote the first two Adventures movies, and I
remember Alex saying he was like when I first started
watching the show, I just like could not stand Xander's humor.
I just like found it so cringe. Yeah, but then
I started imagining Tony Stark saying those exact lines, and
(01:54:27):
I went, oh, it actually is funny. It's just that
the delivery is way off. Yeah, oh Tony Stark. Yeah,
Alex feels the same way as you.
Speaker 2 (01:54:36):
Megan, I love that so funny. Oh my god, I
love this. Yeah, And I think like just the way
that this episode is structured has a really fun red
herring and like, I like, I think any horror fan
would enjoy, especially these Monster of the Week episodes. So Megan,
I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying this show
(01:54:57):
and that you enjoyed this episode. I think that's genuinely
thrilling to hear. Thank you for letting us know. I
love that. Up next, let's hear from Celia, Hi.
Speaker 1 (01:55:07):
Leena, and Ian. I have several thoughts that are kind
of all over the place, so this email might be
a little disjointed, but oh well, first, I was really
interested to hear you guys talk about how a lot
of people think Some Assembly Required is kind of an
episode because I realized that I've been unconsciously and incorrectly
thinking the same thing. I've been watching Buffy with one
(01:55:29):
of my friends who has never seen it before, and
we watched when she was Bad on one day, and
then some assembly required and the next episode Schoolhard on another.
I think I always skip over it mentally because it
takes place between two extremely memorable episodes, and I'm usually
binging several of them at a time. Anyways, all this
to say that your podcast is giving me a new
(01:55:51):
perspective on the individual episodes of the show, and that
this is a clear indicator the TV was made to
be watched week to week and not all at once. Secondly,
I grew up in Torrance, but unfortunately went to South
High and not Torrance High or West High, and to
hear that not only one, but two of my rival
(01:56:12):
high schools were on Buffy and not mine is very upsetting. Finally,
I wanted to throw back to the season one wrap
up and inform Lena that Buffy's cheetah print dress and
the puppet show is from Betsy Johnson because I have
way too much Buffy fashion knowledge and need something to
do with it besides hunting down twenty five year old
articles of clothing on the internet. This got long, but
whatever keeps laying Celia, she her Celia.
Speaker 2 (01:56:36):
This email could have gone on much longer. I loved
everything you said. I okay, First, I have been recently
very into Buffy fashion. Obviously we're watching the show, but
like a bunch of people online will like find these
pieces and purchase them for themselves, and I love that
so much. So I I like to see the Buffy
(01:57:00):
were so much Bob like Betsy Johnson is thrilling, and
I love that dress, and like, I just think it's
so beautiful, and like I think Betty Johnson's style, at
least from my perception of it, I think just fits
so well in the show. And oh my god, I
bet they be having so much fun. God, I love
that dress. How do I get one, Betsy? Please?
Speaker 1 (01:57:21):
I also so agree with your thoughts about Benji television,
and I do it and I'll keep doing it. Oh
me too, But it is spoiling TV because the same
there are a lot of these Monsters of the Week episodes.
I remember when I was watching the show for the
first time, I would get annoyed every time it was
a Monster of the Week. I was like, girl, I'm
(01:57:42):
trying to have.
Speaker 2 (01:57:42):
A can stay away from the arc exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:57:45):
Yeah, And now watching it week to week, I can
really sit in these episodes and realize, Oh, there's a
lot of really cool and fun stuff happening that I
was not appreciating it all.
Speaker 2 (01:57:54):
Oh. I literally so agree. I And this is just
like an anecdote from my personal life if you'd like
to hear it. I've been watching Real House was a
Salt Lake City, but I'll watch like seven episodes a day,
and it hurts my brain so hard to like remember
who's fighting with who. Yeah, and then it'll be like,
(01:58:17):
you know, housewives that like maybe aren't included in like
the big thing that's like gearing up, and so I'm like,
you know, getting annoyed with them instead of enjoying them
like they're meant to be enjoyed. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:58:31):
Like I remember when Severance was coming out, we'd watch
the episode altogether, and then we talk about the episode
for like an hour after the episode aired, and then
I would listen to the podcast about the episode the
next day, and I by the finale was like so
amped up. Also had all of these loose threads in
(01:58:51):
my head and then was able to like connect all
the threads through the finale, and when I'm cranking through
these shows, stuff happens or I'm like, what does that mean?
Speaker 2 (01:59:01):
No, who is that?
Speaker 1 (01:59:02):
I don't remember that at all, because you're.
Speaker 2 (01:59:05):
Basically just like skimming it, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:59:06):
Yes, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:59:08):
So I'm so glad to hear that you know, in
this rewatch you're enjoying it, because I also feel like
I'm doing the same thing. Yeah, Celia, thank you for
your email. Up next, we've got an email from Corey.
Speaker 1 (01:59:21):
Hey, y'all, So I'm listening to When She Was Bad
and it's mentioned that SMG got a haircut for her
role and Scream two. I don't know where this rumor
got started, but it was actually for her role in
I Know What You Did Last Summer. In that movie,
she starts off with her long hair of season one
and then spoilers for a movie that came out nearly
(01:59:41):
thirty years ago. The killer sneaks into her home in
the middle of the night and cuts her hair, leaves
a little message on her mirror, and gives us this
iconic little haircut for season two. I think SMG filmed
her role in Scream two a few months later. But
somehow a few years ago this trivia fact got turned
into scream to being the reason she got the haircut
(02:00:02):
instead of I know what you did last summer? Weird right. Also,
it's widely spread that Ryan Reynolds either auditioned or was
offered the part or turned down the role of Xander.
That a SMG said herself that never happened, and I
choose to believe her over literally anyone, even my own mom.
If you care, it is the two forty mark of
this video where she shuts it down. The video is
Watch what happens when Sarah Michelle Geller gets stumped by
(02:00:24):
Buffy trivia questions posted by she Knows on YouTube on
October twenty seventh, twenty sixteen. And also, you guys talked
in this episode about Jenny Callender being a dancer or
whatever for Prince and a little fun fact about Princes.
He died on my birthday, so there's that. And please
don't think any part of this email was me obnoxiously
being like you guys were wrong, because no, I genuinely
(02:00:46):
love sharing these facts and I hopefully I blee your
mind with them. Love you all so much, Corey. He him, Corey.
Speaker 2 (02:00:52):
You did blow my mind, and I appreciate that because
I genuinely I love trivia.
Speaker 1 (02:00:56):
They know what you did last summer makes so much sense.
I like, like, obviously that's a plot point in the
movie that she gets her hair cut. That of course. Frankly,
I haven't seen that movie in a whyah since twenty
twenty for me, Yeah, so I did forget that, but
you are correct, and that would make sense. In Scream,
(02:01:16):
her having short hair means nothing. She just has short hair,
Whereas it is like a full moment. That movie is
so darn fun, so fun. The kids need to be
watching I know what you did last summer. You heard
that movie four? What are you waiting for? What are
you waiting for?
Speaker 2 (02:01:34):
That's I see you guys about watching that.
Speaker 1 (02:01:36):
About watching I know what you did this summer. When
Front of the podcast, Tiffany and I watched the reboot
in theaters, we were screaming, we were laughing, we were cheering,
we were grabbing each other. And after the movie, the
credits are rolling and this woman a few roads ahead
of us stands up and she looks back at us,
(02:01:57):
and she whispers to her friend, and she stands up
and she marches on over and I said to Tiffany,
this lady is mad because we were having such a
good time at this movie. And miss man walks up
to us and she goes, hey, is this a sequel
to something? Because you guys had really big reactions and
I really liked this movie. Is there another one? And
in my mind, I was like, ma'am, I misjudged you.
(02:02:17):
You are the kindest woman in the world. And I
was so thrilled to say, you better believe there's an
iconic classic movie from the nineties that this is based on.
Crazy you have to And I said, every time you
heard a scream, that was because they were referencing the
one from the nineties and when we were losing our minds.
Speaker 2 (02:02:37):
I love that. How nice?
Speaker 1 (02:02:39):
Okay, And sometimes strangers in movie theaters are actually very
kind people, and you're an asshole for judging them too quickly.
Speaker 2 (02:02:46):
No, I seriously, I come in whenever I go to
a movie, I'm like on defense mode. Immediately. I just
assume everyone's an asshole.
Speaker 1 (02:02:56):
So I'm a big like. I'm a big like. If
you're in a movie theater, be respectful.
Speaker 2 (02:03:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:03:02):
However, there is like an unspoken rod with horror. We're
obviously like, don't be on your phone, but like horror
is part of the fun of watching a horror movie
with other people is you're all screaming, you're all cheering,
you're all reacting like that is the experience of watching
a horror movie.
Speaker 2 (02:03:19):
When I saw The Conjuring recently, I was screaming, cheering, sobbing,
giggling the whole time, and like the whole crowd was
doing it too. It felt so good.
Speaker 1 (02:03:31):
Girl, When little Girl got big, I was when.
Speaker 2 (02:03:34):
Little Girl got big, No, I know, I God.
Speaker 1 (02:03:39):
The joy, the joy in my heart manifested itself in
the most boisterous laugh. We were cheering, we were screaming.
Little Girl she got big. She said, you ever seen
Alice in Wonderland? Eat this? And she got big?
Speaker 2 (02:03:53):
She said, I run this franchise like the Navy, Little Girl.
That's my favorite part is like, miss ma'am, what are
you doing in the movie.
Speaker 1 (02:04:01):
I'm sorry, you're a spinoff queen? What are you doing
in this movie?
Speaker 2 (02:04:06):
I saw a letterbox review that was like, she was
in this movie so much. I thought Matt Rife was
gonna have a kid.
Speaker 1 (02:04:18):
They kept and it's so funny because in previous contract.
Speaker 2 (02:04:20):
They were like, we know what makes funny here?
Speaker 1 (02:04:23):
In previous Conjuring movies, she has been in the background,
and that's it. Like the most attention they've ever gotten
is like, girl, you don't even want to know what
she's capable of, but like don't, like nothing has ever happened.
And then they were like, ship, the most famous part
of this franchise is the doll from the spinoff. So
I guess now she's like the second.
Speaker 3 (02:04:43):
Day, big Bad shout out to Anna, like let's let's
let's put this gets big in the new Conjuring Little
Annabel gets big?
Speaker 2 (02:04:55):
Did you like it?
Speaker 1 (02:04:57):
Did I have a good time?
Speaker 2 (02:04:58):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (02:04:59):
I had a great time. Do I think it was
a good movie? If you have any emails to send us,
you can send them to recoveredly get email dot com.
Speaker 2 (02:05:08):
Did you cry?
Speaker 1 (02:05:10):
No, but I do. Actually that was the like ending.
I actually really liked the last few scenes. I really
did like it was more the haunting itself that I was.
Speaker 2 (02:05:18):
Like, what the hell is going on?
Speaker 1 (02:05:21):
I saw a review that was like they beat the
demon with the power of friendship, and I.
Speaker 2 (02:05:24):
Was like, yeah, they really did you shut your mouth
saying that it was a lot anyway shut to my
conjuring fans in the house.
Speaker 1 (02:05:39):

I don't know what was going on. I felt like
I was I think you were as weird as you
thought you were.
Speaker 1 (02:08:50):
I genuinely like felt like my brain was turned off
the whole episode.
Speaker 2 (02:08:52):
It was it was you were doing a good job.
You had so many good thoughts, and maybe that just
thinks you were so prepared by watching the episode four times,
But it really did not come across that way to me. Hi,
it's in for the future.
Speaker 1 (02:09:04):
Fun fact, the reason I felt so we're doing this
episode is because I was coming down with a cold
and I didn't know it at the time.
Speaker 2 (02:09:10):
I mean, was it just because this episode is so
iconic in.
Speaker 1 (02:09:12):
Your I do think that's part of it is I
was like, oh my gosh, there's so much to cover,
and the other part is that I was coming down
with the cold.
Speaker 2 (02:09:20):
And I mean, there's no way we can cover everything.
Speaker 1 (02:09:22):
You know what episode no one cares about and therefore
has zero steaks, no inc.
Speaker 2 (02:09:28):
So I'm literally this morning I was like, wow, I can't.
I honestly, I'm excited to get to an episode I
don't particularly like. And I was like, oh wait inca
mommie girl.
Speaker 1 (02:09:37):
Yeah, and then check watch this space next week for
us to be like.
Speaker 2 (02:09:40):
I don't know, I really liked it.
