Nel Libro XXIII Euriclea annuncia a Penelope l'arrivo di Odisseo. La regina incredula scende nella sala ma non riconosce il marito, vestito di stracci e sporco di sangue. Soltanto quando Odisseo le mostra di essere a conoscenza di un particolare riguardante la costruzione del loro letto nuziale, che egli stesso aveva intagliato nel tronco di un ulivo, la donna lo abbraccia in lacrime. Nelle loro stanze si narrano a vicenda le passate sventure. All'alba Odisseo esce per recarsi dal padre Laerte.
