Zaczynamy od przypomnienia historii kolejnych fal migrantów, którzy tworzyli nowożytne Stany Zjednoczone. Niewielka liczebnie, stosunkowo nowa, ale bardzo znacząca jest społeczność katolików migrujących z Azji.
Tak więc kościół katolicki w USA jest bardzo różnorodny i ciągle się zmienna. Na jego kształt wpływa też dwudziestowieczna kulturowa historia USA oraz życie w społeczeństwie wielowyznaniowym, w którym wzajemne kontakty różnych wspólnot religijnych są bardzo intensywne.
