Speaker 1 (00:01):
Thank you hey, and welcome back to another episode of
the Author Boss podcast. Yes, I'm so happy that you
are here. So I want to really really dive in
today and kind of break down what it takes to
actually write a book that will sell. So one of
(00:23):
the biggest questions I get is people asking me like,
how do you know if a book will sell? Like
what are those main elements that should be in a
book to ensure that it sells well. I am so
glad that you asked me that, and of course, as
(00:43):
per usual, I'm gonna break down exactly what it takes
to actually write a book that sells now. I remember
when I first was starting my book and I was like,
oh my gosh, I wanna write this book. I wanna
tell the story, but I also want to tell my
story so that I can create impact in world. Right,
I wanted to share my story so that I could
(01:04):
speak on stages and you know, inspire and motivate other people.
And that may be you, or you may just be
writing another type of book. But here are some really
really good things to know when you are writing a book,
and the things that I wish that I would have
known before I wrote my first book. Okay, So if
(01:25):
you know anything about me, you know that I wrote
my book and then I had to write a second
book to kind of go into these things that I'm
going to talk about today. Because my first book, I
only shared my story. Well what happened was when I
only shared my story, people then started to ask me,
you have a great story, but how did you transform
your life? Like what were the steps? How did you
(01:48):
actually go from who you were to the woman that
you are today? Okay? And that creates the foundation that
we're going to talk about today. So, so how to
write a book that sells is first you want to
be clear on how your story or how this book
helps someone else. Now, I am in the self help space,
(02:12):
so I write nonfiction books, autobiographies, memoirs, self help, you know,
things like that. So I'm not talking about sci fi
and all of that. I'm talking about self help and
I'm talking about people who write nonfiction books. All right,
So you really want to really want to be clear
(02:33):
on how does this book help someone else? Right? How
does your story help someone else? Like? Why will somebody
need this story when they read this book? What do
they walk away with? What is the transformation that they're
going to have what are the Aha moments that they
are going to have from this book? And I promise
(02:53):
you just starting with that is going to shift your
perspective and change everything when it comes to writing your book.
No longer are you only focused on hey, let me
get this story out. No, now you are focused on real,
real transformation. And here's the thing. That is what people
are paying for. People are not paying to just hear
(03:17):
a story. They are paying so that they can get
their transformation, so that they can get their Aha moments,
so that they can get their perspective shift. Right, So
think about what perspective shift can I add to this book, Like,
how can I change their perspective on something? How can
(03:37):
I help them, you know, create some type of transformation,
even if it's a little bitty small one. A lot
of authors, I think, try to put a lot of
pressure on themselves because they're like, I want to change
their entire lives. Well, nobody's going to change their entire
life from a book, Okay, So I hope I just
set you free and let you know that nobody's going
(03:59):
to do that. That is why people have multiple books, right, Like,
there's not one book that's going to change your entire
life unless it's the Bible, if you ask me, right,
but we're not Jesus, So what is us? Even if
it's a small change, what is that? Right? So first,
number one, let's get clear on the transformation and how
(04:24):
the book helps someone. Okay, that is number one. Number
two is I'm gonna walk you through how you can
do that. All right, So this book, I mean, this
particular episode is really really getting clear on the transformation.
And I'm gonna walk you through a few ways that
you can do that. And so, like I said before,
(04:47):
when I wrote my first book, it was strictly just
about my story. Then as I started sharing it, people
were like, how did you create the transformation? So that
is when I wrote my second book, The Glow Up. Okay,
so The Glow Up really really walk people through a
step by step process of how I was able to
do that. So what I decided to do inside of
(05:09):
The Glow Up was to add things like quotes. Right,
you can add quotes, you can add scriptures. This is
going to help ground the book to where people are like,
oh okay, now I can see how that fits for me. Right.
People need to be able to see themselves in the story.
So you can use a scripture, you can use a quote,
(05:33):
and that will help ground the books so that people
can help see themselves in the story. You can also
use self reflection questions. So I'm sure that some of
you have read books right where there's like self reflection
at the very ind and you answer these questions or
you make these statements or something like that, and it
(05:54):
helps to bring you into the actual transformation. Right. So
not only did I use a quote, I also had
self reflection questions at the very end of each chapter
to go back over what they read and see how
they can apply it to their lives. Okay, so I
would ask some very specific questions about what they read,
(06:17):
and this also helps with comprehension, making sure that they
are actually getting what they're reading and now they're going
to write it out, and you know, it brings them
into the process. They're not just a bystander, somebody on
the sidelines reading the book. Now they are a participant
in the book. And here's a great thing about that
as well. If you're looking to sell to school systems
(06:41):
and organizations, associations, and you know, sell books in bulk
and things of that nature. Things like this are going
to help sell the book faster because when people bring
you into their organization, you know, it's going to help
you to be able to lead a talk or a
workshop or a seminar. Right, You're not just speaking or
(07:03):
talking at people. Now, you're bringing people into a process.
Now it's interactive, and that is what they like to see.
You know. It's one thing to be able to just
share your story, but it's another thing to bring people
into the process to where they see themselves in your
story and where they're actually getting some type of transformation.
And of course, as you know, asking questions at the
(07:24):
end of the book or at the end of each chapter,
or you can just put a sep of questions at
the end of the book however you like, it's going
to help bring them into an interactive conversation, all right,
And so the last thing that you could also use
are statistics. So I'm not sure what exactly your story is.
(07:45):
You may be talking about domestic violence, you may be
talking about losing weight, you may be talking about politics,
you may be talking about whatever it is. I'm sure
that there are some statistics that you can find online
that you can use to help really ground the book,
to really really make it bigger than just you, to
(08:07):
let them know that, hey, this is a national crisis,
like hey, these are the things and the studies that
have already been done on this particular thing, and that's
going to help them to see, hey, I'm not alone
in this, right, there are organizations, there are people who
are already studying this, doing research on this, and so
(08:28):
that just helps bring and drive everything home. Also, that
also helps you if you're looking to sell to organizations
and school systems and things of that nature too, because
they like to see that type of stuff as well.
They like to see that other people are talking about this,
that other people are researching this, and that other people
(08:49):
are going through this so much so that they actually
have coalitions for these type of things, they actually have
studies on these types of things. Right, So it just
makes your books so much stronger, and it also gives
you a lot more confidence now because you're like, hey,
now the book isn't just about me. Now I'm bringing
(09:11):
other people into the conversation. You know, other bigger organizations
that are also talking about this thing, and it's gonna
help boost your confidence so much to where you're gonna
want to sell the book. I also find that a
lot of authors after they write their books, they're not
confident with selling it because they wrote it from their
(09:31):
perspective only. And sometimes it just helps to shift your
perspective and make it a bigger conversation, you know, and
bringing in other people and other things like this to
make it a bigger conversation, and it just helps you
feel more confident to where it's not so much about you.
You're not carrying the heavy load, if that makes sense.
(09:54):
And I know that that really helped me a lot,
just taking it from my self right and thinking about
my audience and thinking about the reader and thinking about
how is this going to help shift their lives, how
is this going to help make their lives better? And
I was really really more confident with my book The
(10:16):
Glow Up and helping people to do that. So, guys,
I hope that this has helped you. This has been
one of the main things that a lot of my
clients have struggled with. A lot of authors that I
come across from one not putting out their books because
they're like, I'm not sure if this book is going
(10:38):
to sell. I don't know how it's going to come across.
I don't know if people want it. I guarantee you
if you do one of these three things, or do
all of them, the reflection questions, the scriptures of the quotes,
or you know, bringing in the statistics, I promise you
it's going to help make you a more confident writer,
(11:00):
going to help you even give you some aha moments,
right like once you start doing the research, you're going
to be like, oh my gosh, I didn't know this
or you didn't know that, right, And it's going to
help you as as well become a better author, a
better writer, and someone who has a bigger scope and
more conversations that you can have around this particular topic.
(11:21):
It's going to help show you show up as an expert. Okay,
So we don't want to just tell our stories. We
want to show up as someone who is an expert
on this, someone who really knows this and knows how
to bring people through a transformation. Okay. So I promise
you if you do those things, the book will sell.
So thank you so much for tuning in to another episode.
(11:44):
Make sure that you go to authormastery dot com if
you want to go ahead and get that book out
