Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hey guys, welcome to episode fourteen of the Intrepid Golden Podcast. Today,
we're going to talk about weightlifting camp real quick, a
little recap of that, then go into like kind of
eight things that I pulled out of there, or just
new weightlifters in general that really could benefit from. So
(00:23):
we'll go over weightlifting camp first. I pulled weightlifting camp
out of what I did with or when I went
to weightlifting camp myself with East Coast gold when like
twenty fifteen, when they had it at the Olympic Training
Center up in Lake Placid. That was a massively fun time.
(00:46):
It's one of the best waylifting experiences I ever had.
So I wanted to bring that to like my team
Wilton Club, but also anybody else that wanted to join.
I've been trying to kick around the idea, so I
just put it out it. So we met Friday night.
We kind of had like a I guess registration, but
like they come in, we're gonna lift meet each other.
(01:11):
Some people couldn't make Friday night, but that's fine. We
just did power snatches on Friday night. Got through that.
Some of us had to run out of there, like me.
We had a playoff kickball game. The gym that I
own was playing kickball, so we had a kickball game.
We had to get to the playoffs. We ended up
losing in overtime or X training whatever we want to
(01:33):
call it. But whatever, that's fine. Onto the next year,
so we had Friday night. We did power snatches. We
woke up early, got to the gym at eight. We
did like a calisthenic like body weight warm up idea.
Spent like half an hour working through that, kind of
shaking out the cobwebs. Then I kind of sent everybody
(01:56):
off to breakfast. They came back. We did a complex
stuff snatch cleaning, jerk work, obviously some squats right then
they took like a two hour lunch, came back, we
did a mindset talk. Some of the stuff I'm gonna
discuss is from that. We did a mindset talk. I
think everyone kind of benefited from that. I always feel
(02:18):
like my talks are a little crazy, but I think
everyone kind of benefited from it. Some people ask some
really interesting questions and we had some really good time
with that little talk. After that, at like three o'clock,
we went and lifted again. Brutal workouts. So we did
(02:41):
again snatch cleaning jerk because that's what we do. That's
our sport. And then we squatted again because again that's
our sport. Kind of strong legs, strong back. Then took
like we did all that. People are falling apart because
it's hard. So I ended up having team dinner Saturday
night as like a way to kind of get to
(03:03):
know each other, have fun, talk a little shit, you know,
do all the fun stuff. I have a lot of laughs.
So we had burgers and hot dogs, nothing crazy. Then
we and we just kind of sat there and ate.
Everyone went home. Sunday morning came. We had eight am
yoga for about half an hour. Gabby, one of the members,
(03:28):
it was nice enough to give us a yoga session,
and then after that we did a ten am you know,
max out session, and then what was it? We maxed out,
called it a day, and then myself and Ali Dispaltro,
one of the other coaches, or me and her are
the coaches really of weightlifting club or weightlifting work weightlifting,
(03:52):
we went and kind of broke down everybody's like faults
and things like that, and then I sent out an
email to every buddy kind of this is what you
need to work on. Here's some exercises that will help
with those movements, whether it was mindset, whether it was
you know, being confident, and then like you know, certain
(04:13):
things with like moving your footwork and moving your feet
stuff like that, locking the bar out all the fun
stuff or locking your arms out and not the bar, uh,
you know, locking your arms out, which is needed. And
weightlifting kind of just went through whatever individual well we
saw that individuals would need. Maybe they don't have as
much coaching, or maybe they're remote and they always see
(04:35):
their coach things like that, so like, hey, here's some things.
Discuss this with your coach. Maybe you can add it
into your training. It was a pretty good time and
everyone had a good time at weightlifting camp. We're looking
to do it another one, maybe January timeframe, kind of
maybe a month out of or after AO Finals or
(04:56):
Masters Worlds. So all right, so that was the weightlifting camp.
We're gonna get into some other stuff for new weightlifters
that I think during the camp we're kind of discussing
throughout the whole time. So it's kind of goes hand
(05:16):
in hand with the new lifters and the people that
were in the camp as well. So there's no real
rhyme or reason. I wrote like eight things, but we'll go
there's no I guess order. I would say they all matter.
So first thing I wrote down is tickets slow and gradual.
You're not going to make Nationals tomorrow. Nationals is gonna
(05:39):
take some time when you're not gonna make ao series,
but you can start by being the best you know
that you can be today. Like lifting gradual, So I'm
gonna put a little bit more weight on and like
people look at me like, oh, I can't do that weight.
It's like I just said more weight. I didn't say
fucking tens. I said more weight. That's one kilo, you know,
(06:03):
like that's the white little whites on each side if
you if you know the colors right. So it's very gradual.
It doesn't have to be a lot of weight. I
think you need to add more because that's gonna help
over time. Just like just like getting a sun tan,
if you go out today for thirty minutes, you're gonna
(06:24):
get dark or red or whatever. If you go out
tomorrow for thirty minutes, it's not gonna be the same.
You have to gradually increase whether you're to go back
outside side tomorrow for thirty five minutes tomorrow, you're gonna
have to put five more kilos on, or two more
kilos or one more kilo. That's how you get better
at weightlifting, that gradual push every time you come in.
(06:45):
If you're doing the same weight for ten years, it
doesn't work right. You have to go. There's gonna be
ups and downs, there's gonna be injuries and things like that,
but take it slow. You'll go through. It'll be better
over time and after you know a certain amount of time,
like a year. A lot of our athletes don't believe me,
(07:06):
but like they'll come in and I'll be like, you know,
you're just snatching forty five kilos today and cleaning jerk
in sixty five. In about six months, you're gonna snatch
sixty five kilos and they do. It just happens. Like
they come in gradually, work through it. We help them learn,
they watch and it happens. That's how it goes. During
(07:30):
that time where you're learning the technique and learning the
snatch and cleaning jerk, which takes forever to learn, you
focus on strength. This is number two. Focus on strength.
The technique will come push the strength in the back squad,
the presses, bench press, shoulder press, push press, right, those
(07:54):
the deadlift, the polls. Right, all that strength is going
to help you get better technique as well. It's gonna
like later on I we'll talk about stronger back, but
it's gonna help drive that adaptation. It's gonna help keep
the bar close. Like the stronger you are, the better
it's gonna be. All right, So push the strength while
(08:16):
your technique is coming along, and then use competition. I
don't know, I wouldn't say, like, don't let it overcome you,
but use it, use it to be better, right, Like
me and Nick are trying to kill each other each
day in they're my training partner, Nick Justiniano. If you
look back episode ten, I think he's on. We talk
(08:37):
a little bit about it, but you know we're fighting
each other all the time. Like, but it's a friendly,
healthy competition. I may hime better. He makes me better.
He outlifted me today. We're gonna fix that on Saturday,
you know what I mean. But like, that's that's what it's.
That's what it is. Every one of my weightlifters should
outlift me. I should not be the strongest in that gym.
(09:00):
I'm forty one years old. I'm still kicking around with
these young bucks, but they're coming for me and I
know it and I can't. I love it. It's awesome.
So it's all about yeah again, my time's winding down.
Competition will drive you. It'll be it'll be a push
that you will need. You will need it. Not every
(09:20):
day it's going to be that way, but there's the
competitions there. It's good. It's good to be fighting with
people inside your gym like that. Little competition builds that
close knit team as well. I would say number four.
That was number three of the competition thing. Number four.
(09:42):
If you're lost, like you don't know what to do
when you're in the gym, work on your back. Get
your back stronger. Do pull ups, do ben over rows,
do one arm row, do back extensions, do all of that.
The stronger your back back is, the better your life
will be in weightlifting. Right, So we need a strong
(10:03):
back to receive the clean and the snatch and the
upright vertical torso, right, that's that's what we need. We
need to hold that front rack on the dip portion
of the jerk. We don't want to like collapse and
let the bar like drift forward as much. Right, So
(10:24):
strong backs canna help us with that. There's a strong core.
So work your back, do some abs. Work your back,
do some abs. Right, the stronger we can make that
trunk the back. I said, everything all included in that,
the stronger your lifts will be over time. This one,
this one gets me all the time. Like you numbers
(10:49):
number five, Your lift was great. You made it. The jerk,
the cleaning jerk, the snatch, if it happened, you did
it great. Today somebody was like, oh that was terrible.
Now you did it. It was great. Now you can
make it better. Okay, it's not bad, like or it
(11:13):
wasn't great, but it's not bad. You did it, you
got through it, so now you have a chance to
make it better cleaning it up, as I like to say.
But you got the confidence of getting under and doing it.
Let's stay there and make it better. Clean it up.
That's how I like to say. Even like at the
Olympic level, guys will fucking be like Olympic champions, gold medalists,
(11:36):
and their coaches and some other coaches will be like,
oh my god, but he pulled too early. Or something.
It's like, he's an Olympic champion, fucking made the list.
It's great. There's there's a reason why there's judges, right,
some of them are gonna give you red lights, some
of their gative white lights. It is what it is.
But you, your your lists are great. Also, I would
(11:56):
add that when you're at a competition, you your face
determines whether you made that lift. So if you act
all fucking sad and like, oh, oh my god, that
was such a fucking terrible lift, judges are gonna believe you.
Judges are going to believe you.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
If you fucking go off that stage like, yes, my god,
that was the greatest lift ever. I did it, hands up,
clapping your coaches, yelling, screaming, which I usually amd because
it's awesome. Then judges might be like his arm betting
a little bit, but you know what, it's pretty good.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
We're gonna give it to him. So the list is great,
so sell it that way as well. When you're at
a competition, then stop analyzing. Just lift more again, clean
it up. You'll be fine. Number six, work hard, do
all the work right, do it all. If the work
(12:57):
calls for seven sets, the two do seven two, not
four sets of four, four sets of well nothing, do
do it right? Ther coaches, your coach me. We spend
a lot of time writing programs or thinking about our
athletes and what they need to progress to get stronger,
(13:19):
to get better in the sport. So if you're half asking,
or like Colby Ferguson says, half stepping, which I fucking love,
if you're half stepping, then you're not fucking doing it.
You gotta step all the way in it, work hard, man,
get after it. It will benefit you over time. Yeah.
(13:39):
So and uh, next one plateaus. I guess for a thing,
but uh, this is a question I was asked during
weightlifting camp. But like, I don't know. I I use
the example that I haven't pr my cleaning drink in
like fifty ten years something like that, but my total's
(14:00):
gone up, Right, I've gotten better out as a lifter.
I've gotten stronger, things like that, And I know though
those prs will come also as I'm getting older, I
think it's okay, It'll be all right, life will be okay.
I've come to the realization that like I'm forty one
years old and I'm still doing a sport that I love.
(14:22):
Not a lot of people get to do that. So
I get to do that. Whether I PR my snatch
or cleaning jerk is what it is. It's not why
I do it. I just do it for the love
of the sport. It's fun trying to push myself and
other people. But plateaus, I mean they happen, right theoretically,
But I think you take a look at your life
(14:44):
and you can figure out where why there's a plateau.
Right the person that asked me said, they lost thirty
pounds and they haven't pr in eight months. They've lost
thirty pounds during that time, and their lifts got better.
Wonder what happened? You know, things like that, like look
at the big picture. How is your sleep doing? Did
(15:05):
you lose weight? Did you gain weight? You know, like
the bar path is gonna change in those situations, right,
like losing weight, gaining weight? Food? Like what are you eating?
Did you become a vegan? Did you you know, do carnivore?
What are you eating? What is going on? How is
your sleep? Right? Do you have stress? Are you going
(15:27):
through this or that? You know, love one die, this thing, whatever?
What kind of stress do you have? What kind of
work situation? Are you in? Is work fucking kicking your ass? Right?
You know? Like stress is stress, Like it doesn't matter
if it's lifting stress or it's whatever stress, it's it's
(15:48):
fucking there and it's gonna eat you alive, so that
all that stuff matters, right, So I would say a
plateau is like, I don't know about that. I think
there's a lot of things you can look at that
will show you why there's a plateau, all right. And
then the last, but not least, is have intentions. Right,
(16:10):
I talked about a lot about this. I think that's
a huge mindset thing. It's like, I'm gonna have the
intent to make this lift. Don't go up to the
bar and fucking like, while you're chalking your hands, you
know you're gonna miss the lift. Fuck that. Don't do that.
Don't even take the lift, right, fucking have the intention
that you know, you're a fucking great person, great lifter,
(16:33):
great everything, You're the strongest you've ever been. Go up
there and take the lift like you mean it. Have
the intention to do that. But not only the intention
to take just that lift, but also your training serious,
but also your nutrition serious. That's all the intention in
the world. That's what it's all about. Right. If I
take the intention to do this the right way, then
(16:57):
I'm gonna be better in overall, everything's gonna make more sense. Right,
I'm going to be you know, better at everything if
I have the intention to do that. So have intention,
you know, you can set yourself up for the day
early by you know, Hey, I know tonight it's gonna
(17:20):
be fucking hot in the gym, so I'm gonna start
drinking water early so when I get there, I know
i'm gonna be ready to go. I won't have to
worry about it. I'll be super hydrated prior to I know,
if I'm lifting at six thirty, I'm probably gonna eat
something four thirty five o'clock, So my I'm not fucking
starving when I'm trying to eat lift heavy ass weights.
(17:43):
It's gonna make me feel weak, right. I want to
feel full, like, not hungry things like that. Right, That's
all about intention. That helps your mindset too. If you
feel weak while you're lifting when you're supposed to hit
big numbers, that's gonna be a problem, all right, So
I think that's all I have right. So waylifting camp
(18:04):
went real well, Hopefully those couple things help you as
a lifter as you think about life and everything else
that's going on. So that's all I got. So this
episode fourteen traffic Golden Podcast right, if you want to
join the club, we have Zoom, we have you get
(18:29):
coaching and all that stuff through that as well. Hopefully
we catch you on our Zoom calls, our Zoom Weightlifting Club.
Hopefully you join us. If not, I'll see you around.
Have a great one. Bye.
