(00:39):
Now. I was out there bowlingand my bowling buddies and my celf
evidently picked up a little bit ofthe bit of the fluki, a little
bit of the stomach bug. Soit was no fun doing trying to do
it and Leave It to Beaver showwhen you're not when you're having the bug,
going only has a very upset stomachwar does That's true. Ward's got
a case of the But you're herenow, I'm here, so it's good
(01:03):
here. So this is pre recorded. So the reason that being being pre

something like that, I'll get anotherguy and get another relative and we'll start
doing Leave it to deeper knows,Lord knows. I've been to enough crazy
(01:51):
countries in my lifetime. I've nevergotten arrested yet. So still remains.
Still haven't happened there. Yeah, still remain to be seen. The hundred
you can never tell. Well, what do we got tonight? We got
Wally's present. Wally's present is agood one. It's a good one.
It's a very straightforward, right inyour face. It's Wally's birthday and he's
(02:15):
taking a very nonchalant it's it's kindof a ritual, like you know,
Warden Junior kind of surprised. Hereally doesn't want to do anything too much,
but he wants to go. Hewants to go with Eddie Haskell and
have some hot dogs and hamburgers atthe at the soda Fountain and meet some
girls and go to a thing. And then Beaver gets all upset because he's
left out. And while he thenbegrudgingly says, you know, okay,
(02:38):
mom, you can make me acake and this and that, but you
know, Beaver's gone his way andit all goes downhill from there. He's
saved up six dollars and ninety eightcents, which is quite a sum to
buy Wally at camera, But whois he going to stroll with Larry Mondello
When Larry's there, there's trouble.Yeah. So it's a lot of misunderstanding
(03:00):
that go on in this one,and it's it's kind of a cute story.

(03:47):
No, it's just positive. Clickthat down a notch too, sure,
we'll click it down a notch. Here we go. See he did
that just like Warwood Wally was clickthat down on Well do you want to
No, I'm just saying it,don't. He's very defensive. No,
(04:10):
he's I'm drumpy and Xenile. Ithink tonight, here we're gonna put here
we go. We're gonna put Wardin the line of bean factory with Beaver.
Oh man, the logic of Theodore. Yes, it's funny how Ward
(04:38):
calls him boy yeah all the time. It's your birthday. While he's always
so nonchalant throughout throughout the entire show. Was it always a huge thing growing
up for you guys for your birthdayat the time, as we well yeah
(05:00):
kidding, mean your birthday was abig deal. Man. You still love
your birthdays. Your birthday and youget birthday monk man. He used to
be Birthday week and then he inventedbirthday month. Absolutely a birthday and Christmas
love it. The way that thisfamily though, the way that Ward in
(05:21):
June and they celebrated birthday is veryconservative. You know, you have a
couple of friends over. Yeah, have a couple of friends over. You
get you know, a little presentfrom people, or you know, a
present. When I was a kidman for birthday or Christmas, you get
a whole pile of stuff. Thatwas always the best part. Yeah,
your special day. Yeah, wewere pretty poor, you know, but
(05:43):
on your birthday, man, itwas it was a big day. He's
at that age though, you know, while he's in high school now.
Yeah, so he's at that age. He really is just indifferent to it.
Yeah, I'm sure the lend. You know, the next landmark for
him is to be able able todrive. No, actually, it's a
shape was a big one. Youknow, this is a true thing that
(06:08):
he's going on there here. Thebig deal for them was to get him
a watch. Now, when yougot to a certain age, you got
to watch. You got a bigthing. And he actually said the right
thing. It can't be a cheapwatch. It's too cheap. But it
can't be too expensive because you'll probablybreak it or lose it or whatever.
Why was a watch such a biglike sign for them? It was a
sign for me too, a signthat you were growing up. You need
(06:29):
to know the time to be certainplaces. And it was like an adult
thing. Adults who were watches, you know, gotcha you know basketball,
I'll never forget. When I wasthirteen, I think I wanted a certain
kind of a watch, and myfather got you know, he got me
a growin watch, and he gota style that he would want for an
(06:49):
adult. It wasn't like what Ihad wanted, but it was an expensive
watch. Did you wear it?Yeah? But I was unhappy. I
couldn't tell him that, but youknow, he'd he's getting me something he
wanted he would like to like.Ward does. Yeah. As much as
I love Grandpa, he didn't havethe best style on things. You know,
you were always the guy that lovedyour style. Yes, And I
(07:11):
can imagine that must have cramped yourstyle a lot right there when he did
that for you, Yes, butfor him that must have been a big
thing to be able to get youbecause he didn't have a lot of money.
I always wanted a certain kind ofan id bracelet. You know,
they just never seemed to get theright gotcha. You know, here's a
this is a big thing. Youknow. Beaver's there, you know,
while he's playing nonchalant with him andhe's going down memory lane, while he's
(07:36):
not taken with going with the manyplaces here, while he's being really nice,
but he was you know, wellhe cares where about his buddies right
here? Well he kind of does, but he gets here. Yeah,
that's pretty cool. The stuff thatthey had fun doing is still fun to
(08:00):
Beaver, and it's not it's notso much fun to him, you know.
You know that kind of stuff. For my birthday, now it goes
to be said that Beaver is goingto get him a really nice present for
(08:20):
the day, for the period oftime that they're in. He's gonna get
him a little portable camera. Uh. You know that we took a flash
bulb and everything. You know thatthat was the rage, you know,
to have a Kodak. Instematic, you'd get a camera, or when you
when you got older, if youask for a motion picture camera, you
wind it up an email meter camera. Oh my god, to take home
movies. What a big deal thatwas. I remember the big video camera
(08:43):
we had when I was a kid, you know, and you would always
have that out. Oh I lovethat. And that was like like the
sign of status when you had thevideo camera out and you pulled it out
of a hockey game or played orbaseball or whatever. Not a lot of
people, you know that that stuffthat houses a dollar. It's crazy to
think now when you look at it, you know, yeah, you know,
(09:03):
it was. It was. Ialways loved that. I always loved
to I always love to help Grandpawith home movies. We had loads of
them, but of course they didn'thave sound on them. You know.
The video cameras had sound and everythingelse like that. I'll never forget when
Grandpa got a light bar so youcould take all kinds of you know,
like pictures of Christmas time, youknow, in the evening and everything else.
(09:26):
Fifteen seconds left on the commercial books. Yeah, so it was.
That was a big deal. Andagain Instamatic cameras, then Polaroid cameras.
I'll never forget when polaris, Ohyou mean the ones they're the pictures aut
instantly. Yes, yeah, thatwas a big deal. Look at this,
the old kinds of wrought iron sharesunder the tree. Even that house,
(09:48):
like because it's not the house thatI identify, and I think most
people identify, of course with theshow. When you see that, it's
still kind of weird to see it. I know they had it for the
first two seasons. They get anew house for seasons. I loved it.
I love Dead House, the original, this one they're in now.
Yes, yeah, it's it's beautifulthough. The way it's very simple,
very yeaheen fifties. It reminds mea lot of your house here. Yeah,
(10:13):
and a lot of ways. Ohyeah, just very just very charming
and quaint. This house was wasbuilt in nineteen fifties. Yeah, unless
you're going to really really change theentire house for grandma and grandpa. Ye,
so my parents outside bought for them. That were you downsize too.
I love those charming and quaint homesthough. Yeah, they're the ones that
you walk in. It's like everytime I walk in here you always feel
(10:35):
a warm and inviting atmosphere. Yeah, that's you know, and then we
keep changing as it goes along.Absolutely kind of the thing. I like
the second house better that they havethough. I think that's a nicer,
particular style house from the sixties.Yeah, that was, like, I
think, a probably good prominence, you know, like that because that was
a big joint. Yeah, thatwas a real middle class home, you
know, a guy who was successful, middle class successful dream. Look at
(10:58):
how sharp Hugh Beaumont looks. Looksharp here. I don't know if I
have a picture of them at thismoment. No, I don't think I
have a picture of that one. He's very physically fit, you know,
he's almost fifty years old. Here. He looks great here. Yeah,
he's a very handsome man. Wallygives her, by the way by be
(11:22):
telling stories. What they skipped overis, you know, while he's giving
her instructions for things, here's LarryMondelo. Now here's trouble door. Yep,
he's looking at the camera. LarryMandelo is here. Excuse me for
skipping around for a second. There, Yep, there he's with the president.
I'm foreshadowing this a little bit here, but that's what Larry's dressed up
(11:43):
as right now. I know somepeople like to see pictures. Here's Larry
again, kind of in an innocentway, and maybe not so innocent.
He's always putting the doubt and likeEddie Haskell, does you know while he's
ignoring you, they're going to ignoreyou. Blah blahlah blah. Look at
that bow and arrow said, sixdollars and fifty cents for three arrows a
(12:05):
bow and I always wanted one ofthose. Yep, No, Grandpa would
never let us have that, ever, because he knew you probably know he
lived in the city. You're shootinga bow and arrow, man, Unless
it was a little to play oneor something, you couldn't have one of
those. I miss shooting our bows. Oh yeah, there you go.
(12:30):
Larry wants to play with that bowand arrows. That's a finger. He'll
turn Beaver against his brothers. Yes, Beaver is always very easy to manipulate.
Yeah, Beaver always wasn't easily manipulatedor middle. He always got manipulated,
having to be for the sake ofhaving a series, otherwise there be
no stories. His hair is sofunny when you look at it, goes
(12:54):
on that diagonal sling. That's howthat's how the barber would cut your hair.
M hmm. Barbi used to cutmy hair that way. They would
do just what they're doing to him. Then they would comb your hair down
and go like this, cut itup on a silam with probably the big
scissors too, right, No,he had big read barbera scissors. This
guy is a famous character actor overhere. He's already been in a couple
(13:16):
of episodes. I think that youknow throughout the he's been in a million
Westerns. Listen how the guy atthe local toy store knows that all the
kid's name. Absolutely, he's eventrying to change your mind. It's a
(13:45):
big investment for a kid, Yeah, especially at that time. Oh yeah,
he puts it in a sock.I'll never forget. I bought a
half gun will travel Derringer, uhhuh for two dollars and twenty cents Gallas
in twenty cents. Yes, Ihad had two bullets in it and they'd
(14:07):
fire. Does he get him thepaddle with the ball or something? Yes?
Yeah. Oh, they got thebirthday cake, they got the hamburgers
going. Yeah, that was abig thing for them to make hamburgers and
have a cake, and yeah, they make it like this, like elaborate
meal. Yes, you know whenwe look at it now, it's the
(14:28):
most common thing in the world allthe time. Here's Eddie young Edward.
Oh my god, he's always soprotectious, says, you can't get anything
good around here, right, therest of you commoners and Mayfield less true.
(14:50):
Oh my wow. You wonder whyyou hated as you know he hated
him. Now you have to thinkof when this is made in the late
fifties. In just a couple ofyears, you had Woodstock, you had
people running around topless, hippies everythingelse. Do you realize what a culture
(15:15):
shock this was from him, thisguy being sixteen or whatever he is here
there's the beautiful cake that. Yes, yeah, they're just a few years,
a short period of time. Iwonder if Tony Dowell was at Woodstock
hanging out and having fun, JerryMathers or I could see Ken Osmond probably
(15:35):
doing. Yes. Listen to howEddie just changes his tone as soon as
the adults. There's always somebody likethat. He's a con man. We
got to take you know, youknow what I always known. I'm sorry,
(16:00):
I'm sorry you're watching. The peopletoday are so gluttonous and greedy.
Little wonder today they want one ortwo and they're chopping on it for about
thirty forty seconds each. I can'tremember there used to be candy out on
a candid. It wasn't filled uplike with a big bucket I do have
now. Yep, Clarry is theworst friend in the world with everything.
(16:33):
I'm surprised everybody doesn't kick his butta heck of a lot more than you
hear about him. So he's wonderfulthough he is. He's such a great
character. Let's shoot it at Wally'spresent. Yes, Larry, I've seen
(16:56):
this happen more than a few times. Oh, yes, you have to
be so careful with them. No, but I mean kids say, get
a toy that they want to bustthe damn thing in about ten seconds and
look, yes, of course yougot Larry. He's gonna bust this thing
fast. Did he call it apunk bow punk bo? Yeah? Help,
(17:30):
So Larry throws it right back downthere. Ye, look at the
cuffs on these guys pants. Imentioned that all the time. At least
Larry apologize that it didn't take himtoo long. This time now. But
he's got but he's got to getthe heck out of there. I always
love the musical scores for this, you know, for these episodes, and
(17:52):
just how they transition it so wellquick commercial here, folks, What damage
would you done with a little bowllike that in the city? Oh,
well, you're anytime we had anythinglike that to play, we always got
in trouble. We'd always do somethingawful with it. You know, we'd
either shoot it at one another,or shoot it at a window, or
you know, I'll never forget learninghow to take a wire hangar and make
(18:18):
a slingshot where they were the oldheavy boy and you get you get your
father's flyers, and you'd make ahandle and twist it around and then get
the other stuff. And then you'dgo to look at the house for rubber
bands, where then somebody got thebright idea to go up and buy them
from the candy store, thick rubberbands, and you'd have to try and
get a little piece of leathers fromsomeplace to make the slingshots. Yeah,
(18:40):
yep, And man, you knowI broke somebody's old man Christiansen, I'll
never forget I broke this big picturewindow. Yes, in front of his
house. I cracked the top ofit. Do your dad have to pay
for it? I don't know whathappened with that one. I have to
you really be honest with you. Here we go again with the birthday cake.
(19:03):
Right now, everybody is eagerly anticipatingwhile he blowing out his candles.
What a good friend daddy has hehelps and blow him out? What a
good brother. Yes, and here'sthe terrible part. Feaver didn't realize this.
(19:29):
Oh my god, oh boy,you get a savings bond. Yeah,
he's loaded, man, got it'sjust the watch. Oh yeah,
(19:52):
look how excited he is. Yeah, oh boy, he's starting to feel
guilty. Word leaned in for Hedidn't get it now while he's too big.
(20:17):
You don't see that from word much. Yeah, not with the boys.
Yep, what do we got amicroscope? All right? I used
to love getting those my scopes, chemistry sets. You always had the stuff,
(20:37):
and we were doing it as akid. Beaver is sweating this one
out right now. Oh yes,Eddie is actually acting very nice to him
here, very normal. He isacting normal at this moment, like a
(21:00):
normal kid. He's not putting ona facade at this moment. Yeah,
he's happy for a while. Yep, it's going to go back to being
Eddie right here. He gets inthat little paddle with the ball on the
end that I don't know what youcall it, it's paddle ball those things
(21:21):
any event's ever had them? Thosethings breaking about ten seconds too. Oh.
I used to be good with him. I struck Grandpa crazy. I
can only imagine he wanted to probablyjust take that thing and smack you upside
the head with it on my bea. I knew it. I know,
guys, I have a story foreverything. But I have a very good
(21:41):
story with that paddle thing with myfather. But Beaver here is very upset.
He's you know, he realizes he'sembarrassed and rightly so Yeah, it's
a good lesson for him. Ohyeah, very funny, Like people from
Florida would send a pen and pencilset to him. That was a big
(22:03):
deal to get, like a mechanicalpen and pencil. You know, I
still have Grandpa's at the house.Yeah. That cake looks good, though,
I'm gonna throw that one out there. June looks like a master baker
came back toy. Can you imaginewhat a world it is where you call
(22:36):
up the person at the toy storeand your kid gets a haircut, you
call up the barber anything else likethat. They know all your kids' stories.
You know. It takes the takesthe community to raise a child of
that, you know. And boy, they knew. They all knew their
business, they knew what was goingon. I used to go to Joe
Sapienz's brother in law, Anthony thebarber. I'm flat with Vnue and I
(22:56):
go and somehow I cut my hairand I see, well, oh he
figures out what's happened. Now,well to one call for him. Yeah,
and he's being a good guy aboutit. Even though this goes down,
it goes south. Why did theynot wear belts? Wasn't the style?
(23:18):
You get the belt loops in there, We're all used to the style.
Then was this these little thin belts? Yeah, tiny tiny thin belts.
See the little tiny book belt loops? Yes, I see him,
and he doesn't wearing Beaver's got oneon though. Yeah, you see the
boys with them. Well, hehas a regular sized belts. But a
lot of the people, you know, if you were trying to be cool,
(23:41):
you'd wear these very thin, thinbelts. He actually has like a
cowboy belt talk, and you wereyes, but when you came back you
(24:04):
of course he has to correct himon that, right. M mm hmm.
What a great show this is.I know we say this every episode
there always they take all these littlethings and uh, the importance of them
(24:29):
in real life. He's trying tobe rational and calm here, but you
know, words about the he's actuallyreally calm about this. I was very
surprised how nice he was, becauseBiaver is kind of playing dumb right here,
of course, and he's just doingthose little things normally. Word with
snapped him right now, but heunderstands that his feelings were hurt. Yeah,
(25:00):
a way that will make you feelall right again? Are you really
there? Where's the bow and arrowset? Now? Well, suppose you
took the ball and arrow set backto the store and got your money back
and bought that camera for Wally. That makes you feel a lot better.
Oh boy, is Larry Mandella's father, No, it's just Fred Russeberg who
(25:23):
has to call him about work orsomething. But but he can't. He
can't fill in more that the thingis broken. Word thinks that it's not
broken if he's not liking to beselfish. I hate to say this there,
(25:45):
but maybe it's a signing is growingup good point yep. But like
like you said, you're not gonnabe able to take that back now,
So what do you do? Seethat's the kind of belts everybody wants see
while he's a little thing. Yeah, the thin one, yep. I
love the kitchen style though. Ilove it. I love that old school
looking. Yes, you could stillaround. You can still get that today.
(26:08):
Yeah, I've seen it in afew of the nicer you know no
days. Just look. Yeah, people have a lot of money. They
just you know, they decide theywant to go retro whatever period they want.
Now he's walking around the block andyou know, around and round and
around the block. It's like gettingold ovens and stoves from the forties.
(26:33):
They're a fortune. Ward's going outnow. He is really trying to be
nice to Award. Yes, he'sreally doing a good job at it.
(26:53):
Yeah, yeah, this is reallyimportant to them. Well I try to
I couldn't. Why couldn't you?Well, in Beaver's defense, he did
(27:18):
try to tell him before, right, This is my ongoing problem with beaver
my but it makes for the show. I'm sure the fans of the show
like this, or most people do. He tells he he he lies too
much, way too much. Hemakes up too many stories. Yeah,
(27:45):
but that's the prevailing thought of theday, that the little boys and girls
would make up things and catch himat it. They make up bs tails.
I gotta say again, though,I am very impressed by Ward and
not flipping on him. Yeah, especially with the elaborate lies. Yeah,
O, my god, because meanto me and who I want to try
it out? You want to getme true? Matters was such a good
(28:15):
actor as again, he was wonderful. He does that very well. I
understand too. Wrongs never made itright. Yeah, I know, Dad,
I was just trying to game withhim and that I can never get
(28:36):
one. I'm not going to apologizeand say this, but this is like
a war is given a sermon outof the good book on this one.
A lot of this is child psychologyfrom the fifties and the good stuff,
and a lot of this is rightis right out of him being a minister.
No, that's that's why we're kindof listening more on this one,
because there's a lot of great lessonsthat he's giving access as there is throughout
(28:57):
the whole show. The lessons he'sreally given out here are fantastic to him.
He's showing such patience as a parenttoo, because I think just about
any of us who are parents wouldhave probably lost it by now. Well,
you would have been angry, wasseverally disappointed. He's laughing through.
Yeah, it's a whole different pointof view. He's they find this humorous
(29:18):
helping him struggle with learning how tobe a good person. He learned more
feeling the shame and the guilt andall that stuff than they could have ever
done for him with a punishment onthat. That was the biggest punishment for
him too. Yeah. Yeah,it's a very hard thing. You'll have
people now, I mean, I'ma psychologist, and people tell you,
oh, don't solve problems for yourkids like you know, don't do what
(29:41):
war did in the beginning and sayingI'll tell you what, call up and
take you back, let them figureit out. He can't really do that,
in my opinion, so he triesto be a good guy. But
then on the other hand, Iprobably with you would have said i'll tell
you what you can work it off. Yeah, six fifty, go get
in the camera. But they don'tdo that while he does not get a
camera man. To their credit, they don't know. That's what I'm saying.
(30:03):
I probably would have done the sameexact thing that you said. Here's
six fifty, you know, here'sthe here's the money. I got to
be a good guy. Yeah, you got extra chores this next month,
Yeah, to pay for it orwhatever. You know, something like that
might be a legitimate thing to do. But I think they're doing the right
I think they're doing the right thingtoo. It's the cheap cop out we
would give them by you know, allowing them. I don't want to feel
bad for you. Yeah, yeah, I don't want to see you feeling
(30:23):
bad for making a stupid choice.Yeah. Just a beautiful moment when they
have this. I can't remember thiswas my brother sleeping with the watch,
or just the moment, you know, when a few minutes I had,
and you know a few moments Ihad with him when I was a little
boy. He was in the navy. You know, he was my hero.
(30:48):
I was like, you know,Andre's about twelve years older than you,
right, all more than that, the market for Pancakes show. Yeah,
no, twelve years excuse me,you're right, it's born in nineteen
thirty eight. Yeah, it's funnywhile he's making him feel better now too,
and let him know how he didit when he was younger with other
(31:08):
things. Yes, yeah, andI'm oh a good bond dy had.
Yes, he's got that good watchnow. I'll never forget the first watch
(31:34):
that I got with you know, with the glowing dial their medium dial.
Oh my god, I thought itwas just phenomenal. That was a nice
episode. Yeah, it was avery beautiful. Yeah, a little different
way than did you know, thenormal with them? Yes, that was
a that was definitely a really goodone. The next episode is called the
(31:55):
Grass is Always Greener Air. Yes, that's a that's a good one if
I remember too. So, ohthis is the one. Yeah, now,
I always watched one of these beforewe do a show, and I
didn't have an opportunity today to seethis one. But this is where the
trash Man's house, you got it? Yeah, Beaver thinks they're in the
poorhouse, so he has to learnhow to improvise a little bit less and
(32:15):
he goes to the trash Man's House. Yea spends a day over there.
It's a fun episode for the nextone. This was a great one now
tonight, I really really enjoyed this. It was good Ward was the star
