Leave it to Beaver Podcast (Season 2 Episode 16) The Boat Builders

Wally, Chester and Tooey are building their own boat and plan to sail on it, despite Ward and June's forbidding Wally. Once at the lake, Beaver is the only one small enough to get in it and once on the water, the boat tips over, leaving a soaked Beaver behind. However, it's trying to keep their afternoon of boating a secret from Ward and June that's really going to wipe Wally and Beaver out.

uh you know in places far andnear, and uh we we had

(02:17):
our granddaughter here, your daughter fora month, yep, spoiling her,
having a lot of fun. She'sa doll. So it's been busy,
a lot of action and a lotmore to come. Absolutely, I should
do an episode callse. I justgot to notice to possibly have to do

(03:21):
on Wednesday, so wow, it'sit's been a big one and a lot
of stuff. And I watched thisepisode. We watched it again today and
you said the same thing. Ilove this episode. This was a really
good episode. Man, it's areally good one. Yes, yeah,
it's a really good one. It'scalled the boat Builders. The boat Building
give us a little synopsis of it. It's just kind of one of those

(03:42):
things where Ward comes home, youknow, typical. Ward comes in and
says hig as June and you hearthem talking in the garage and the guys
have seen some kind of a filmabout a kayak and how it's made,
and they made a drawing and thenthey go in the garage and they're taking
a Wards tool and barrel staves,a wooden barrel and they're they're making this
outline for a kayak and uh,you know words this kind of leave alone.

(04:08):
And then June says, well, they're using your tools, and he
goes out there and long story short, uh they're gonnare This thing is kind
of sketchy, and June is worriedthat they're going to put it in Miller's
pond and something's going to happen. And more it says that we'll go out
and talk to them. He saysto Wally, now this looks kind of
sketchy, this kind of thing, but promise me, you know, we're

(04:31):
not going to do it. No, when you do it, just you
know, don't take that thing outwithout letting me know. You don't like
a parent. Yeah, of course, you know, and everything else.
In a while he says sure, and you know what happens. We're talking
into taking it out there, andthen Beaver capsizes the He gets a little
bit wet too. He gets wetand he stinks like and it's it was

(04:53):
actually a very funny episode how theytry and sneak back into the house phone.
It's just a really good episode.And there's a special thing in there
that I can't believe it. Ipicked up on a detail. I wonder
if they have it in the beefrepedia. Well should I tell it when
it comes? Okay, tell itwhen it comes. Hey, Barbara Barbusus,
Hello, I missed you. Wemissed you, and we missed everybody
too. We're so glad to beback. Well, quick housekeeping here.

if you'd like to as well.So once again, we appreciate all of
the likes and the good comments. So pop anything out, you know,
one on there and let's have agood time tonight, right, yeah,
on, I would think so,we hope. So all right, everybody,

(05:58):
So if you want to watch alongwith us, go to any episode
you want. You're anywhere you watchthe episodes. We watch it on Peacock.
So we got a couple ads hereand there, but we watch it
on Peacock. Watch it on whateveroutlet you like to watch it on if
you want to watch along with us. If you don't, just follow along.
We keep it very lightly in thebackground, so the copyright people don't
get us. They clipped us onthe last two ones, so that's why
I couldn't put fifteen out. Fifteengot clipped on it too, So I

(06:23):
put it out and made it aboutfive minutes and they hit me. So
we hopefully will not have any issueswith them on this one. So if
they do, I'm sorry. We'redoing the best we can to keep it
with as much audio as we can, but we don't want them to hit
us. So let's get ongoing.Neil said, I plan my whole day
around this podcast. Well, I'mglad that you really. Oh great,
Neil, Thanks Neil. That's awesome. All right, everybody, So let's

(06:46):
go in three two one, yam, I haven't seen any beaver since March
before I left for the trip. They don't have a lot of beaver in
Asia. I don't. No,no, there's no beas. There's no
big beaver new they do. Peacock'snot available in Asia, so this is
on the other Yeah, it isa lot of the outlets that it's on

(07:08):
are not available over there. Theygeo They geo block it so unless you
have a VPN and then you can'tget around it. So we got we
got a fifty eight minute commercially, your guys, we can't bypass that or
anything else like that. Yeah,so you can't, I mean you can
find it online and stuff somewhere, but all the ones where it's easy to
watch it on you can't find themon out there because they geo block them.
So it kind of sucks on that, But it's all right. It's

(07:30):
the I wasn't in the I wasn'tout there to watch Beaver. So I've
got you, you know, asmuch as I miss it, I think
everybody, uh, you know,or most of the people out there may
not know. You know, youwork with people like I did with my
career. But I'm a retired psychologistand I can't tell you how much new
information is coming out, supposedly newresearch. And man, if you're leave

(07:54):
it to Beaver fan, this isall. This is all. It's sane.
They're not quoting leave it to beaverby by but saying these are the
kind of values that they say thehealthiest values for people that they're trying to
get back to just desperately. Allright, what these folks are doing here?
I don't tell. For entertainment,man, what a good show Ward's

(08:15):
pulling in in the big old beautifulcar. Oh man, what type of
car is that? That's a Ford? Is that a fort fairlane? I
think that is a Ford fairlane.Yes, well, he hears them banging
in the garage. There, hegoes, here's more barrel, stays look
at this, I like the episodewith the barrel stuff with and he steps

(08:37):
on. Was that in season oneor is that season one one? Yeah?
Uh, June looks a little differenthere with her hair. It's shorter,
yes, yeah, yeah, shorter. She looks stunning though I always
say that she's very beautiful. She'sstunning as always. This is such I

(09:01):
don't know how you guys feel aboutthat, but here's this is one of
the great things about a seventy seventyeight paramount. Yeah, wow, I
bet you that was a beautiful car. Neil, How did it run?
Did it run good? He justwants to peek in and go see what

(09:22):
they're doing. Look at how theseguys snack in these days. You and
he's eating a little tiny bit ofcelery. And look at these guys in
the garage. They've got his tools. Beaver is just watching them though.
Yep, you know this is Didyou guys ever do stuff like this?
I know that I did building aboat, like, not a boat,
but you build a box car, racers and stuff, like that. Neil

(09:46):
sent and ran like rap. Whatran like is nineteen seventy eight? Forty
Oh, yes, I had afair lane. Hey V what's going on?
Great to see you. We juststarted anyways, PC, you don't
know worries about being late. We'resorry we had to start late today a

(10:07):
little bit. These guys are growingup too. Guys look at them at
the dimensions too that they think aboutit. This is how people would make
projects. They're drawn by hand andthen measure them out and work out the
stuff. While he's really growing up. As you can see throughout this,
they're getting big. It's not reassuringif it's label to fall apart and then

(10:31):
you're gonna put it in the water. Now war changed his close. He's
in his play close. It wouldbe dressed close. But yes, if
he was wearing that to work likenowadays, that would be a formal outfit
for a lot of people. I'dlove to watch the clothing on these kids,

(10:52):
like the shirts and things like that. The baseball has look at it.
He's actually a good looking kid toit. He looks like a dork.
Even if you took the glasses offof them and everything else like that.
He kind of looks like a dorkto me, even with the glasses
off. Look at the pockets onthat shirt. Oh my god, that
is hideously ugly. My kids saythat to me all the time though,

(11:13):
and they look at old pictures andstuff. It was that dorky haircut or
that dorky thing. Go, comeon, yeah, here's the here's the
game that they're playing, the dance. The kids they understand what the parents
are doing, and the parents thinkthey know what the kids are doing.

(11:35):
He never wears a belt. Thebelt is built into the pants, is
it, can't you see? Okay? Kind of yeah, no, the
belt is. The belt is builtinto the pants. Interesting, it's like
they had pants with like a Dicky'swork pants just to have them like a
little cinch cinch belt in the back. But that's a belt that's into the
dance. They're not low rise onyour hips, man, They come right

(12:00):
up over your belly button. Yeah, I'm praising not pulling that thing up
to his nipples. Man. No, Now does anybody see something on ward
that's a little bit different? Andhe has another thing here. If you
look up in More's shirt, he'sgot a pack of smokes. Yes,
yeah, I told you that.Yeah, I know I would. He's
got he's got a pack of smokesin there, and he's gonna he's gonna

(12:20):
have him in another shirt. There'spictures you'll see, like from when they
took him from on set, ofhim like always smoking around when he's working
with the kids and producing the siteand something like that. Yeah, I've
seen I've seen him put up onsome of the groups something. See the
butts in his pocket. Yeah,I haven't smoked in years, but when
I saw that, I said,if Ward can smoke and enjoy a cigarette,
I'm gonna go have a cigaret.Uh huh, boy, look at

(12:43):
this boat. Wow. Well they'vegot an idea here. They're gonna take
old tablecloths, you know, theplastic tablecloths, and they're gonna slack him.
You know, put a varnish on. That's the way you would make
model airplanes. Yeah. Put uhyou take a ball so and it make
it hard around it. Yeah, and you tend like a crepe paper and
you'd put varnish on it. Theywould call it airplane dope. Yeah.

(13:05):
I'm sorry. I don't know ifi'd want to be getting out in one
of those things. Any of youever build a boat like this when you
were a kid and try to throwit out in the pond or the or
the river or the lake or anythinglike that. Is that chicken coop around
it? You know it's chicken chickenbarre mean excuse me? Yeah, it
actually is goofy as it looks. It has an element of sense to it.

(13:26):
It's somewhat you know, like symmetrically. You know it's supposed to be
a kayak. Yeah, it's howit's how they're reasoning that they're putting.
They're putting this together. Look attheir shirt on toy yep or Chester.
Excuse me, Look look at thatpack of smokes. Yeah, I'm sorry.

(13:46):
I've never seen him do this.I'm surprised they didn't catch it like
when they were Oh no, no, you see you see Andy Griffin come
out on the end of Griffin Showand smoke a cigarette occasional one. It
was a little different now, no, same time period and early. You
know what I'm saying is though it'sa ward, you never see him do
that type of stuff on here.Well he smokes a pipe smoke occasionally.

(14:15):
Yeah, Viza, I bet theywere left in by accident. Yeah,
I guarantee you, because they weresupposed to display the wholesome family. I
know. I don't think so Vbecause they were in several different shirts and
he's gonna have them in a thirdshare. Do you know back in the
fifties and sixties, if you lookat the old Life magazines, you would
have advertisements with doctors recommending and smoking. Smoking was good for you. It

(14:37):
was good for digestion and for yournerves. How much were they getting paid
for, you know? For that. I can remember going to the dentist
and the dentist saying to me,this is gonna take about ten minutes for
this thing to take. Do yousmoke and say you said have one?
I'll have one? Serious? Whilehe's friend was there to make him look

(15:01):
good. Eddie was a jerk.Lumpy was a dufist until he was a
geek. Barber's got it right,He's got it right. Smoking was good
to lose weight. Yeah, stillis. Yeah, it is weight in
your life. You can ask myStint and uh huh, yes, it
gets you after all those years, even though it's been forever. It sure

(15:22):
it does. Did you enjoy itwhen you did it? Absolutely? No?
I can't believe there that that's insaneto watch him with us a crap
like this. When I was akid, we do all kinds of crap
like that. Okay, yeah, yeah, Neil's got a good point.

(15:43):
There are price cigarette commercials on duringthe show while originally aired. You know,
Neil, he could be but itwasn't frowned upon. Everybody smoked everybody.
You know, the culture just changes. Yeah, I mean you guys
know that. But did you haveguys ever have like a big like there
was a construction project or there wouldbe a big hill or something like that.

(16:03):
We had stuff like that in thelots and we might take something like
a like a big box or somethingand I might try to float it or
something. No, it wouldn't bein a lake necessarily, but there might
be something twenty foot high and you'dtry and slide off of it or something.
I can remember my friend jumping offa second story roof into a bunch
of boards and a big nail wentright through his foot. Yeah, none

(16:26):
of them can fit into boat now. No, they definitely didn't do the
dimensions correctly on this. Biaver's lookinglike, no, I don't want to
do this. Funny show. Thisis well written. Here to me,
this is one of those things thatI can see kids doing very easily.

(16:48):
He's so excited. Look at thesmile on his face. Though. Yes,
it's floating there you go, it'sabout to tip over. Yeah,
I'm sorry. That's what He tooka dump right and right and right in
that river. Very funny quick commercial. Do you guys ever do something crazy

(17:10):
like that when you were kids?We used to go swim into the river.
Yeah, you guys would do that. We were stupid as heck with
that too. We used to.We used to take our bikes and we'd
ride up to the Johnson City upwhere the home depot was and I went,
yeah, we dive jump off thecliff in there, and then we
try to make ziplines. I'll neverforget. We tried to meet with Matt
Kennedy and we set it up becausethe zip line didn't work, and then

(17:33):
we made it a trip wire. When he went to go run, the
trip wire got him and he wenthead first right off. We would try
to float down the river too,and then we'd walk back stop and let
you know, to get back up. We used to take We used to
I can't remember getting up pretty highin a tree, and I can't remember
one guy getting James six. Asa matter of fact, I'm just thinking

(17:53):
of this getting stuck up in atree, very very highdotic all the fire
department. He got up and hecouldn't get down. We had these big
oak trees in Brooklyn. This onthe streets and everything else like that.
But somebody had thrown away like clotheslineand we must have seen something on Lowell
Thomas about Mount Everest or something, and we threw this stuff up in the

(18:15):
tree and hoisted somebody up and theycouldn't get him down. Oh boy,
look at Beaver. He is soppingwet right now. This is funny because
they start telling him he smells lateron like swamp water. This would have
been a big problem. Look atthe shirt on Chester. Oh yeah,

(18:41):
well you can steal boy shirts likethat. Yeah, yeah, sure,
we've got a Shoolas shirt on.Yeah. I can't remember when those kind
of work shoes came out for thefor the general population when I was a
kid. Oh my god, youwant to hear those. And of course
they had cheap imitation ones that youget to and man, would you get

(19:03):
some blisters on your feet from thosetimes, unless you got the good ones.
They don't look too comfortable. No, but you wanted them Bieber's famous
cap. There is getting wrung outright now. Look at this that she's
doing her house work. She neversits down ever. No, look at
this. Now he's got a screwdriverand he fixed the event in the dining

(19:29):
room. It's been a busy it'sbeen a busy Saturday for He's going on
and tighten the screws and random places. Oh my gosh, there's another he's
got another shirt on, and there'sa pack of putts. You're enjoying this.

(19:51):
I love this episode. I loveWard in this episode. I just
love his face in this. Icould you not love Ward anyways, He's
so great. It was really nice, guys. I'm sorry if I'm enjoying
this so much. It's like I'msitting in my own living room with you
guys with me. I'm just reallyenjoying this one. We're peeking in right
now the window. Oh, mom'sthere, duck. What's she pulling out

(20:15):
from underneath? There? She's pullingout cleaner. Oh okay, you smell
like a swamp. How they gonnaget caught on this one. I forget,
No, this is really this isreally funny. They find a way
to bamboozle Ward and Junior get inthe house so he can take a bath

(20:36):
or something. Yes, yeah, and then they put and then he sneaks
down and he puts beavers clothes downstairson the front. Oh yeah yeah,
and they create like a fire orsomething, and thanks, yeah, thanks.
This is funny though. Did youguys ever make phony phone calls when
you're a kid, prank calls andstuff? Yeah, yeah, of course.

(20:57):
I think he's about everybody that morethan a few times. My father
would do that with other people. He'd sit there, like on a Friday
night if if a bunch of peoplewere over family, and then somebody would
say, come on, dad,do phony phone calls? It before the
days we had a call her ideastart six time that he'd do funny stuff.
His voices that he would always dowere the best. He would do

(21:18):
a thing where he calls somebody's houseand he say, hello, is Sammy
there. You know. He'd dothis about ten or fifteen times. The
person would get really angry and thensay, there's no damn Sammy here.
Then he'd call up and he'd say, and you know, he'd get the
same person and they say, whois it? And he said, this
is Sammy. There any calls forme. Everybody would be screaming. Everybody

(21:40):
had a ball. What a cornyjoke, but it was so much fun.
Here's Beaver and they didn't know theywere going to get in big trouble.
Look look at this. Water isdoing the bills. He's doing the
bill work in the bills. He'sgot this little briefcase. There's this belt
to the yeah too, he's tryingto do it. He's doing his best

(22:07):
lady's impression here with the high pitchedvoice. Ward is so, Ward is
so? What are you gonna say? He's kind of so square on certain
things. He just he just goesalong with us. Here, who is
this? He's so he believes everybodytakes him at face value because he's a

(22:33):
stand up guy. Yes, lookat the smirk on his face. Come
on, Wally, get him inwhile he does some good acting here.
If you if you're watching this,he's actually very funny. It's funny with
his facial gestures. It's very believable. Run Beaver. Look at his briefcase.

(23:11):
Oh yes, oh, here's justa new survey. It's a jab
on women. Your demon, don'tfill it out. It's the men.
You do gotta love Wally Barbara,he's great. Oh yes, now look

(23:33):
at this, long before women's liberationin the sixties. Here's June. She
doesn't like this at all. Shedoesn't like the stereotypes for women. But
she does it very politely but firmly. This is gonna work in their favor
to get up the stairs. TheOh yes, the men. Yeah,

(24:00):
I thought so. That's a smartmove right there though. Yeah, well
this is how kids are devious.Yeah, that's a smart move on their
part to set the garbage disposal andget upstairs. Yes, get upstairs.

(24:23):
Beaver, don't be a dope. Now Ward's got some suspicions here. Yeah,
he's smart. He realizes what's goingon. Something's fishy here. He
always has one of those funny stories. His car used to have a light
with the lights used to go onin the car. H here's while he

(24:48):
coming down. I'm not gonna sayit out loud, but I appreciate that
comment there. Thank you. Iappreciate that comment from YouTube. Thank you.
I'm glad you're here for the firsttime, and enjoy what you're seeing.

(25:12):
Make sure you like and follow thepage. Everybody, We would greatly
appreciate that. See he's putting somejunk down in the cellar and he's about
to set off the furnace. Yes, look at how loud were the furnaces
back when you were a kid, like you know, in the older houses.

(25:33):
Yeah, then you know, itdepended what kind of furnace they were.
If it was a coal furnace, you know, I can remember coal
being used in many of the houses. You really had no noise to it.
Coal, huh yeah. Wow.Also the helmside. Golly, you
hear the coal truck come up andthen you hear this. It was this

(25:55):
terrible noise when you're like, ohwell, the coal going down. Look
at how silly is it on thepipes? Oh boy? Yeah. You
look at the basements there, Theyweren't finished basements. You didn't spend a
lot of money on that. Yeah. Those are before the days of making

(26:18):
your man caves downstairs or making nicefamily rooms down in the basement. Very
seldom some people would have it.But there would be something a family would
save up for, you know, now there's four people there. Look at
the lunch there. Look at thesmall amount of food. Yeah, people
are eating. Now what we eatfor lunch is some huge you know,

(26:40):
sandwiches, potato chips. Oh ohyeah, look at her. Yes,
burning leather is a new boot.H uh Oh how'd you know it was

(27:07):
coming from the cellar? Yes?Oh it's over now, Yes, would

(27:33):
you boys mind telling you what's goingon? Eat you lunch boys? Don't
say it, you're gonna be bustedanyway. Then twice, Oh boy,
look at his boots. She ispissed. Well, she's trying to stick

(27:56):
up for them to see him getin trouble for her babies. You're not
getting out of that one. Justmess up and admit it, you know,
yea, yeah, they already knowwhat the gig is gonna be.
Wait in a room. This isa very interesting ending in terms of you

(28:23):
know that they're gonna get some kindof punishment. See if you remember if
they're gonna get away with the punishmentor awards gonna fulfill the punishment. I
know, I think he's gonna lethim off the hook here. I thought
I thought he might as well.But I won't spoil it. He doesn't

(28:45):
like being had just what he says, but he's they're also not really really
really mean about it. Well, and he also realizes too that you know
they're kids, man, they're boys. Boys will be boys to do well.
See, this is real bad.It is actually real bad with some

(29:06):
of the things that they do.This is a bad one. When I
was a kid, and when youwere a kid, that would have been
a bad one for me, becauseif you're down like here, we'll live
by the river and everything. Peopledrowned and die. Yeah. So I
just drowned in the dam a coupleof weeks ago, even in a pool,
I can you know, do youknow anything like that? You always
gotta be careful with that stuff, you know. Then some and then some.

(29:34):
I had a guy in the SeaScouts. He was this guy,
Jim. I loved him. Ithink his last name is Flynn. And
he got He was a tremendous sailor. How did he drown? He was
he had his own sailboat, asmall sailboat, and the beam whatever they

(29:56):
call that thing that the sail goeson there, that's that swung around and
knocked him out, knocked him outright in and drowned him. Yes,
and they found a few days laterthe coast Guard's Yes, he was so
handsome, nice man. See hisspots. He's got him again. You
could see the silver man right thereon the silver paper. Yeah. I

(30:18):
was talking to Katie today and wewere talking about, you know, we
want to get out and go fishing, and we were looking at the river.
But the river is so running,so you know, yeah, fast
right now, and it's so deep. That's all. You know, absolutely,
you won't get anything. The otherthing, George says, I don't
remember the end of this one.V says he kind of did help him.
Yeah. I don't remember the exactending either, George, but I

(30:42):
remember what led up to it.Why couldn't you at least have come to
me and said, I don't thinkhe would have been mad about it if
they would have just told him.You know, kids parents say that,

(31:02):
but you know that it's you know, I think in this instance, though,
I know he would have been thatmad. No. You know,
here in this thing, you hearwhere some of the kids get like he
talks about Larry Mandel that he gotlost and his father cracked him and things
like that. It's not beyond reason. The war has cracked them. Sometime
in the past, they said, when they got hit by whatever, give

(31:26):
a wall up. A couple oftimes a kid doesn't know and they don't
want to lose self esteem in frontof you. You respect him, love,
Hey, Amen, how's it going, Tom says a lot, guys,
too great to see amin. Onething, See, that's the most
important thing. Yeah, you know. The thing too is a psychologist,

(31:47):
is a developmental psychologist that you guysknow that you don't have to be a
psychologist or a social work or ateacher. You know that helps. The
most important thing for kids is theirpeers. At the stage of the game.
You're gonna let you know. Youdon't want to look like a dope
in front of your peers. Youdon't want to be a chicken mayby Daddy's
boy or daddy Nope. So there'sthat risk taking he's got. He's got

(32:14):
that smirk on his face a littlebit though. Ye, it is when
you realize all the things that couldhappen, it's a pretty nice feelings sometimes
just him come home. Yeah, absolutely, that's a good point. That's
a really good point. He's gonnago shine the shoes now, actually he's

(32:38):
putting nice foot oil on him. What's that? That's an oil that you
would put on your leather, glossand stuff, you know, to make
them supple. Those shoes were burned. I didn't know whether I don't couldn't
see those as the boots the waythey came off. But Ward's making them
repair their shoes because the shoes costmoney. Larry Mandelo, they were real

(33:09):
happy, m h. And thenwhen they got Larry his mother started yelling
a well, he's logic, butit's what parents did in those days.
Many times you know that, youknow, depending upon Remember when I left
the tackle box, I was gonnasay that, yes, yeah, I'm

(33:30):
done. At the river. Wewere on first day at trout fishing.
My friend fell down. He didn'thook his rod and he hooked his lore
through his ear and we left thething down the tackle box down there,
got called to the police. Itwas the one and only time Grandpa ever
yelled at me. It was allday, didn't know what's going on.
We thought you had drowned, Grandpa. Grandpa yelled at me. That was

(33:52):
the only time he ever yelled atme. Beside ourselves. He goes,
you're stupid son of Yeah, becauseshe just didn't get it, and it
was a very easy thing just toyou went, we're at the hospital with
the kid's mother and everything to say, I got a call, you know
which which you're old enough to know. That was a great episode. Yeah,

(34:13):
I love that episode. What didyou guys think? Did you like
the episode the punishment sticks? Guys? Yeah, you know we were telling
stories over it, but it wastwo weeks no TV or movies. Yep,
well justified. You know, theydidn't listen, they didn't follow through
or didn't say you got to stayin your room and you can't go out
or anything else like can you godo those other things? I thought,

(34:37):
h thought. I thought he wasgonna let him. I thought he was
gonna let him off the hook. But he didn't. And you know,
and I I definitely agree with hiswith his yah, with his assessment on
that one. Visaid loved this episode. Yeah, it's a really good one.
