In this week's edition of the PodKaz, hosts Nicole Haase and Todd Milewski look back on the first loss by No. 1 Wisconsin in nearly a year. Minnesota moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 after scoring four times in the third period for a 5-1 win in Madison last Friday, but the Badgers gained a series split a day later.

We also look back on Ohio State needing to rally for an overtime win at St. Thomas before Joy Dunne's four-goal, six-point game led a rout in the second game. Minnesota Duluth also got a road sweep against St. Cloud State in another series between WCHA teams in the top 15.

Cornell and Penn State kept their undefeated starts to the season, with the Big Red beating Yale and Brown.

After the break, we preview the Rivalry Series games between the U.S. and Canada in Cleveland on Thursday and Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday.

A Saturday game between No. 11 Clarkson and No. 7 Quinnipiac is a highlight of the upcoming week's NCAA schedule.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Usccho dot com. Welcome back to the podcast. Todd Maleuski
and Nicole Hasey with you from us echo dot com.
Busy week to talk about last week. Nicole, lets jumped
right into it. Games that we were at in Madison, Minnesota,

(00:24):
number three rank Minnesota splitting with number one Wisconsin, breaking
Wisconsin's thirty eight thirty seven game un beaten streak on
Friday with a five to one win before Badger's respond
with a seven two victory on Saturday. Four goal third
period for the Gophers on Friday to break a one

(00:45):
to one tie. That was the way I was thinking
about it was. I definitely saw Minnesota having a chance
to split sweep any possibilities there. But I don't know
if I saw a four goal third period coming from
a team against wiscot in Labon Arena.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, it particularly how that game started.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
I mean, I think maybe if they had Minnesota had
come out like on fire and done that sort of
thing and like really dominated the game, maybe it would have.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
But yeah, it's the fact that like that felt.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Like a tale of two games, maybe more than any
game I can remember in recent history where where Wisconsin,
you know, sort of had the dominating, They were dominating possession,
They kind of had everything going in the first only
got the one goal, and then man, things sure flipped,
and uh yeah, I think I think for opponents it's
probably a mixed bag of like what to take away

(01:36):
from this and that, like, hey, they're they're fallible, they're beatable,
Like that's great. But also they came back well, still
not playing their best and had a heck of a
rebound game on Saturday. So you know, some from column
as some from columbe if you're a team that has
to face Wisconsin. But yeah, very weird and interesting weekend
at the rink, don't you think it was?

Speaker 1 (01:57):
I thought that you may Wisconsin being fallible. We did
see that a lot where Minnesota was able to pressure
in Wisconsin's defensive zone and create turnovers and create just
some sloppiness and some things you don't normally see out
of Wisconsin in their own end of the ice. And
that was I think a great credit to the Gophers

(02:19):
the way that they play game plan for that and
the way that they executed that and were able to
really make life difficult throughout really both games for Wisconsin
all over the ice.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Absolutely and like their fore check was just I thought
it was funny. And I don't remember if it was
you or someone else asked KK Harvey in the postgame
about the Ford check, and she sort of like her
eyes sort of got big, like her reaction was like, yeah,
their for check, like that was a I think it's
just something that they hadn't seen a ton, particularly from
the Gophers, but just from really anybody. I mean obviously

(02:54):
Ohio State that's their deal too. But yeah, the defense,
which is I think that like for Wisconsin, we haven't
talked about probably in a couple of years. They've just
been sort of really solid. I mean, KK Harvey's arguably
the best defender in the world, you know, if not
well when you say top three to to keep away
the arguments. But yeah, they looked they were struggling, like

(03:16):
you said, just just turnovers and bad passes and and
a little too nonchalant, like even with that for check,
they were trying to just escape. A couple players started
to scape the fuck out. It's like, well that's not
gonna work. So yeah, it was. It was a very
interesting game. I thought it just was one of those
like I think, you know, knowing Wisconsin had gone almost
a year without losing a game, the National Championship, all

(03:37):
that stuff that like maybe people have them in this
this sort of wanted like level, and it was like, no, no,
these are these are still college kids and this is
still a team that's learning. It's still you know, only
November Friday, I guess, still October. But yeah, it was
it was interesting. I think just it was a good
learning I mean, you know, Mark Johnson would always say,
you want you like, you want your team to lose games.

(03:57):
You don't want the first time they figure out what
to do when they go down to be in March,
and so you know, I think that's a really good lesson.
That's a team, like the sophomores on that team had won,
had lost like one game, you know, in their careers
that thus far. I think those are all things from
all the Wisconsin side that like they'll those are all
like how do you respond? How do you handle that
in the locker room? You know, it was a night game,

(04:18):
in an early Saturday game, and so being able to
wipe that slate clean and come back out. Those are
all things that I think, you know, they would talk about,
but certainly things that I think other opponents will be
looking at that tape and wondering what they can do
to cause the same sort of mayhem.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Right exactly. I was kind of struck by what we
saw from Minnesota, the you know, the the regulars getting scoring.
Avy Murphy had a couple of goals, Josephine Buvang scored
a couple of times, Sidney Morro scored, but the go
ahead goal for them in Friday's game, Siena dallas Andro
or her first collegiate goal. What a time for that,

(04:56):
and what a place to to make your marketing goal.
He'll remember for the rest of your life. I would
imagine that it.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Was fun to watch, and man did she get a
sited and so did their bench And yeah, I mean
one of the things that Wisconsin done so well is
keep Abby Murphy in check. Right, But the one player
that sort of picked has picked up the slack.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
There is moving.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
I mean, I think we've figured out she's got more
career goals than against the Badgers than Abby Murphy does,
which is interesting. And when I asked her about it postgames,
she didn't give details, but I think she basically said,
like their style and my style, Like I just I.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Match up well with them.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
She also pointed out that she gets a lot of
passes from Abby Murphy, which helps. But I think she
just maybe something about sort of the European approach and
things like that. She said, she just sees it. She
sees the opportunities a little better against the Badgers than
maybe others do.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
She thought was interesting.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, Scotson came back right away in Saturday's game goal
by Maggie Scannell fourteen seconds into the game, and they
had a one nothing lead on as well, but they
stretched it to nothing pretty quickly on Saturday or that
that just seemed important to have have a little bit

(06:10):
of room because Minnesota did keep pushing. And we've seen
a lot of games at Lebon Go Go Haywire when
Wisconsin starts scoring early but the open state in it
for a while. It ends up seven to two, with
I believe it was five Badgers players having three points
a piece, so a pretty good spread of offense there

(06:30):
from Wisconsin. And it's a split. It doesn't change who's
at the top of the rankings. The Badgers still are there,
but Minnesota leapfrogged Ohio State into second in the rankings
this week, so a little bit of a change there.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yale Hastate needed over time to beat Saint Thomas on Friday,
and I think, you know, if you sort of only
looked at the results, you'd be like, well, Minnesota went
out on Friday and beat Wisconsin, and that's what Ohio
State did.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
So I think that's part of some of that.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
But obviously I think, you know, it's all it's pretty
negligible at this point. But what will be interesting, I
think is it's you know, Wisconsin, several teams will be
on buys this weekend because of the international break. Wisconsin
had two more injuries come up in that game. Both
the players came back into the game. But that's a
team that's struggled thus far with players needing time away

(07:22):
or however you want to say it. There's been various
injuries and setbacks, and so they're definitely looking forward to
a little rest.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Very happy for that bye week, I'm sure. And we
will talk a little bit later in the show about
the rivalry series and international break this week, but let's
continue on with the Wcha you mentioned. I'll have Satan
needing overtime on Friday to beat Saint Thomas. That was
a game that Saint Thomas had a lead in the
third period, Chloe Boreen put to Tommy's ahead, but hilldas

(07:53):
fence and scores the tie and goal with two fourteen
left and extra attacker on the ice, and then Saddi
von Hennen I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly. Close to
that anyway, scores in overtime to give the Buckeyes a
three to two win, and then they run all over.

(08:14):
Saint Thomas ate nothing on Saturday behind a six point
game from Joy Done. Hello, four goals to assists. Not bad.
We've talked in the past Saint Thomas is this close
to Ohio State and some of the games, and then
there's a massive gap in some of them. It feels
like the the state of a lot of things in

(08:35):
college hockey, right There can be these these really narrow games,
and then there can be blots and it could be
the same two teams on back to back days.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
The kind of played out this week.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Basically, every team that like maybe got upset or like
one and you lost a game on Friday that they
were maybe not supposed to came back with a huge
win on Saturday, and it you know, It's one of
those things we've talked about sometimes when you when we've said,
like we're disappointed in a team that had a bad
weekend not coming back sort of revved up the next
week or.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
The next day. And so I thought it was really interesting.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
You know, let's see stone Hill beat l a U
four two, Mercyhursty Delaware for Northeastern, took a seven to
three win over bu Ohio State had the aight oh win,
Ari t went seven to one on linden Wood in Wisconsin,
took down Minnesota seven two, and all of those teams
either tied, lost or had a team eke out a

(09:31):
late win. Like those were all questionable games for the
teams that probably should have won them easily, and then
they all came back with multi goal wins the next day,
and some of them in emphatic fashion. So yeah, it's
I like, but yeah, how do you how do you
lose to a team that you can turn around and
beat ato the next day or how whatever it is,
beat seven to one the next day irit Lyndon Wood's case,

(09:52):
you know, it goes to show I think that it's
not just a feeling that things are more wide open
and the you know, things are much closer and nobody
can really look past any game right now. I think,
you know, it's a thing we've said on and off
for years and coaches like to say, but me and
the results are really showing that, Like on any given night,

(10:14):
it's entirely unclear what the results are going to be.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
Yeah, we had a road suite from Minnesota Duluth at
Saint Cloud State last weekend five to three and three
to two Taan Johansson, I'm counting here, three goals on
the weekend. Pretty good performance there, Sophia Villa via Nueva
stepping in for v Gascon who was away at Hockey

(10:41):
Canada training and stopping sixty three or sixty eight shots
on the weekend. So good fill in role there for
the Bulldogs to make that happen. And this also helps
create a little bit of that separation there between Duluth
and Saint Cloud as we move forward in the season.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Yeah, and good for her, great outing, and you know
there's going to be times when, like likely ev makes
this Olympic rosster like they need to be getting her
some time in net So those were some great games.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
Maybe they weren't sure if I would be gone or not.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
But like just going into this knowing that she could
get some time on ice and get that confidence is
huge and she had a good weekend.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
Yeah, let's head over to ECAC hockey. Now, how concerned
should we be with Colgate a couple of loss or
a tie and a loss last week lost to number
fourteen Yale in overtime on Saturday, five to four, after
a three to three tie with number fifteen Brown on Friday.

(11:46):
I'm interested in your thoughts in there, Colgate four or
five and one overall one two and one in ECAC.
That's not the start day they were under. They wanted
right not to start day one, or anyone thought they
would have.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
I would think no, absolutely, I think, uh. I mean,
am I surprised by last weekends? Uh?

Speaker 2 (12:04):
Outcomes? No?

Speaker 3 (12:05):
At this point, like it was clear that like hmm,
things could like a good game from Dartmouth could definitely.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
You know, defeat them, and then that's exactly what happened.
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
I mean, they're still getting the scoring, so I think
it's a defense splash goaltending thing. But I think also
there's just like it's a it's a little bit of
a self fulfilling at this point, like there's I think
there's not a ton of continents there, and yet it's
just I think maybe I think we all did it.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
I think maybe they did too.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
It's just a sort of underestimated what the that graduating
class A was bringing to the team and B would
take away when it was gone.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
I'm just feels like maybe they're not entirely.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
Like, weren't entirely prepared to be the team they needed
to be this year, and like now they're trying to
find what their equilibrium is. But I mean, they're still scoring,
so I don't, like, I know, it's hard for me
to say that, like, oh, it's just the graduation of
Elton Cova, because I don't I don't think it's just
I don't think it's that. I don't think the offense
is the problem.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Right, offense not being the problem either for Cornell nor defense. Again,
the Big Red keeps rolling along now seven and zero,
which I believe is one of two undefeated teams left
in the country along with Penn State. Cornell beats Yale
three nothing in Friday with thirty nine save shutout from

(13:31):
Annalise Bergmann, and then five to one over Brown on Saturday.
George Shift two goals in that game, helping Cornell out
to a three nothing lead. That's looking like the team
to beat as it was towards the end of last season,
as it has been, and it seems to be continuing
along that way.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
I mean it's unsurprising they you know, returned to much
of their core. It helps having as Bergman in net,
and I think I think that after probably the disappointment
of how the Frozen four went, I think there was
probably some you know, sort of soul searching and some
working on the team and and then a desire to
come back and do even better. Like they they had

(14:11):
a great season and and it sort of fell flat
pretty quickly once once they got you know, to that point.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
So that's they don't want that again.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
That's that's just competitive people, and where they were like
they want to come back, and they showed fight in
parts of their semi final game, and so I think
I feel like this is a team that's really going
to be working this year to be in a better
position if they get there or when they get there
again this season, they're probably talking about it as a lens.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
So let's give them that when they get there again
this season.

Speaker 3 (14:43):
Uh, you know, like they just they it was a
different pace and you know, they played Ohio State and
that's a very different type of game than you play
within other teams against other teams in the ECC. And
so yeah, I think that they're just they're in a
great position to have returned so much that talent and
now the goal is to be a bigger player when

(15:04):
it comes to frozen four time.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
Yeah. Also when you c ac last week, Dartmouth with
a three nothing upset win at number nine Clarkson on Saturday,
Grace Zanne thirty three saves for the shutout. There, that's
a little bit of an eye opener I thought on
Saturday for Dartmouth to get to go to Clark Center
did and get that win.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
Yeah, absolutely. I think it was like their first win
at Clark Cident in like seven years something like that.
You don't you don't go into Chile and win all
that often. But yeah, just an absolute great weekend from them.
You know, it's interesting there they're two four no, but
when it came to conference time, they picked it up
quickly and I thought it was interesting. I assumed that

(15:47):
it was a great weekend from goalie Mikaela Ashiva, whom
A big fan of and she is not who is
in net. She maybe off doing international duty. I'm unsure,
but I just there were a lot of secondary or
backup or not primary goalies however you want to say it,
that started this weekend and put it really great results.

(16:08):
So yeah, I Dartmus and one of those years Dearmouth
and Brown are the two we've talked about for probably
the last year or two that have been on the edge,
have shown that those flashes of like this is a
team that could could do some damage and then you know,
obviously they have their downs as well. But it feels
like for both of those teams things have really come
together quite well this season. And I feel like we

(16:28):
could be talking about both of them come February and
I could see one are both of them making decent
runs in the ECAC Tournament as well.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
I know we'll be talking about Quinnipiac in February. And
Bobcats bounced back from their first loss of the season
by sweeping Union and RPI by combined fourteen to one
score over those two games. Cale and the marsh six
point weekend five goals now leads in the country with
seventeen goals, one ahead of Aber Murphy from Minnesota, and
tied with Murphy for twenty for scoring lead with twenty

(17:02):
five points. It feels like those are really big numbers
early in the season that we're seeing put up, right,
because I believe thirty five goals was the lead last season,
and we're already seeing the leader at seventeen roughly a
third of the way into the regular season, so maybe

(17:23):
maybe not even a third away, right, it's about ten games,
twelve games, Oh yeah, about there. It feels like there's
the scoring is turned up in a lot of ways
for some of these teams.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Yeah. Absolutely.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
What's interesting is it's not like those players are then
like leaving everybody else in their team and the dust,
like there are plenty of other people scoring on their team.
Tess a whole cat of uh metric for Quiinnipiac this weekend,
Like kil LaMarsh wasn't even like the best goals.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
Scorer on her team this weekend.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
But yeah, I mean I would love we may have
to try and get killing on here, because you know,
she had thirty three points last year, so she's obviously
taken a huge step up and just found a lot
of confidence. It's not just the goals, but it's the
shots too, like taking putting that puck on net and.

Speaker 2 (18:09):
Like making creating those opportunities.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
But yeah, to me, it's not just that we have
high goal scorers, but that like, it's not like they're
doing that and then just nobody else is scoring goals
for their teams.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
So that's what's crazy to me.

Speaker 3 (18:22):
Is that it's it's like, it's not that we're just getting,
you know, these outsized scores and leaving everybody in the dust.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
There's there's a lot of them. There's just been a
lot of goals early on.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Yeah, all right, let's move over to hockey East. Northeastern
back into the top ten of the ushow dot com
poll at number nine this week after a sweep of
Boston University three to one Friday, seven to three on Saturday.
Ali Lalan scored the goal ahead power play goal with
twenty eight seconds left in that Friday game, and then

(18:54):
Jaden Bogged and Lili Shannon each with two goals on Saturday.
Importance steps there for Northeastern. Who is you know, right
there with well right now three and zero in hockey,
So behind Boston College, who has played a couple more

(19:15):
games in the conference there, but starting on the right
foot in Hockey East play so far for Northeast.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
Yeah, I feel like so when I went to do
my poll this week, I felt like it was time
to do some course correcting, right. Like what happens is
if you don't if people were in the poll start,
it takes a while for them to maybe like shuffle
down and things like that. And I felt like, you know,
Northeastern probably had been underrated to start the season based
on some of their outcomes, and so I moved them

(19:46):
up more than you know, like I had them in
the teams and move them I think up tonight somewhere.
And that just sort of course corrected on some of
this stuff. It's been hard to really figure out some
of this, as I've talked about before, but I yeah,
I made some bigger moves this week to just try
and it felt like other people did as.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Well, and they made that big jump.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
So yeah, it seems like things are starting to come
together there. Like it just was a little bit of
a slower start than maybe they would have liked.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
But I love, you know, not only is.

Speaker 3 (20:15):
The excitement of a last second goal flood and on
its own, but like that fight that we keep talking about,
showing that like you're not giving up on a game,
and sort of that went from a possible upset to
a secure win in about twenty not even six seconds.
I think they immediately be pulled their goalie and Northeastern
scored an empty netter, and so yeah, I think unsurprising

(20:39):
from them like that they would have, that they would
have a bounce back, and that they would sort of
start putting it together. We know what kind of fight
they have, and then we know what their coaching staff
is capable of, and so yeah, I think it should
be I think probably a better season than last year
for them, and maybe more like they're used to and
have been in the last few seasons or last year.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
Yeah, I want to bring up Vermont's four to three
win over BC on Friday, just briefly, not so much
for the hockey even though that was first conference losses
season for BC. So a good one there for Vermont.
But the costume is that the Vermont coaching staff was

(21:20):
where it was a late morning start at kid's day
education is some kind of thing like that in Burlington
and the coaching staff is all wearing fishing clothes is
the best way I could describe it. Waiters Jim Plumer
had we were talking about this when I was showing
you the video. Had this great bucket had on with

(21:42):
the Vermont logo on. It was it was really cool.
So nice job to them for understanding the assignment on
Halloween for early morning, a late morning start.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
I guess there was also somebody I think, in a
shark costume to a company the when I went looking
to get stills, and we should point it too that
it was like waiters, but also still the shirt and tie,
which I think is amazing.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Oh yeah, right, like professional. But yeah, all of it
was perfect.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
I'm a little like somebody at UVM released the pictures
that you had to.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
Have taken them.

Speaker 3 (22:21):
ESPN doesn't let you take screencaps, so I put it
on social yesterday. But it's literally my camera phone pictures
of my computer screen of the stream, so they're not great,
but yeah, shout out that that was amazing.

Speaker 2 (22:34):
I definitely made her day and Friday.

Speaker 1 (22:39):
Yes, sant Anselm up to the top of the New
hah standings right now at a five and one start
through six games. Sixteen points. They got a sweep of
Sacred Heart for one Friday and three to one on Saturday.
Kayla Schukuwski stopped seventy of seventy two shots over the
weekend Lucy Da Koto with two goals on Friday and

(23:02):
another on Saturday. So that's where we're starting to see
things shake out with New High's Saint Anselm going to
the top. Stone Hill is in that mixed two assumptions there,
but we're seeing Sacred Heart, which is, uh, had had
some it had better starts than this, struggling a little
bit and kind of in the middle of the pack

(23:23):
so far.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
Yeah, the preseason coaches pulled.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
They picked Sacred Heart first in sant Ansome filth, so uh,
definitely some overperformance from Saint Anselm.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
Assumption was six. So yeah, a huge week in for st.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
Anselm to go out and just really like put an
exclamation mark on, like, hey, work, we aren't we aren't
finishing towards the bottom of this conference. I mean, obviously
there's still a ton of season to go, but that
those were big name wins for them. They weren't. They
weren't necessarily close either, Like they just went out and
really dominated the weekend, and I think, uh, kudos to
them for for really sort of putting their mark on,

(23:55):
like this is this is who we are, and you're
gonna have to beat us this season.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
Yep. Atlantic hockey is continuing to be dominated by Penn State,
which is twelve to zero and eight to No. One conference.
After a pair of four nothing victories at Robert Morris,
the Nity Lions of outscored opponents forty to two win
conference games and fifty six to eight overall, He's now
got a fourteen point lead over RIT for first place

(24:22):
in Atlantic hockey. Now they've played two more games, but okay,
even if you give Rit six points to that, it's
still an eight point advantage this early in the season.
It's it's really feel like the races for second, which
I don't know that anyone would have been surprised by,
but knowing that Penn State is really separated itself as
the the star team of Atlantic hockey so far, I

(24:44):
mean really in the last few years.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
Yeah, I you know, maybe pre apologies, I'm not sure
how much we're going to talk about the AHA going forward,
because Penn States feels like, you like Rinse and repeat,
Penn States and first and everybody else is playing ketch
up behind them, So kudos to them. They're having a
great season so far. They've looked, you know, pretty unbeatable.
And again it's not just testigianiky right like that, there's

(25:07):
scoring coming across. They've got some of the best freshmen
in the country points wise. Yeah, just uh, putting together
a really solid start. And you know, being brinked sixth
is not like that's that happening by you know, by accident,
So good for them.

Speaker 1 (25:26):
Yeah, all right, that's our look back at last week.
That's a lot of stuff. Anything else you wanted to
touch on before we we move on?

Speaker 3 (25:33):
Do you want to shut out Mia Montenari of RPI,
who scored with point one seconds left in the third
to force overtime against Princeton.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
Princeton did end.

Speaker 3 (25:43):
Up winning, uh with a power play goal in over time,
but you don't cut it any closer in that point
one second goal, And unfortunately, like that wasn't shared. I
didn't see that as it was happening, but then I
saw it, uh, I think maybe yesterday on social and
just wanted to make sure that that got a shut
out I would love to see a video, but I
hadn't seen one posted yet. But yeah, that's amazing. Must

(26:05):
have been a spectacular feeling. So good for them, Good
for RPI, who has not had the greatest start to
the season. But that's another one of those things that
you can build on. You know, they're one ton to know,
but they took for instant overtime and I hope they
can kind of build on.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
Stuff like that.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
Yep, all right, we will be back briefly. We've got
some international hockey to talk about and look ahead to
this coming week in NCAA women's hockey. Stay with us
on the podcast. Welcome back to the podcast. Todd Nicole

(26:41):
with you to talk some international hockey on a semi break.
There's still gate college games this weekend, but a lot
of the teams have taken off because they're losing players
to the international window here. What used to be the
Four Nations window now is the rivalry series window here
in North America, Canada and the US playing Thursday night
in Cleveland and Saturday night in Buffalo in the first

(27:05):
half of this annual rivalry series has not much more
to call it than that it's it's getting ready for
the Olympics this year, but it still has that rivalry aspect.
There'll be more games played in December in Canada. I guess, Nicole,
when you look at the rosters, is there anything that
stands out to you about who's playing and maybe who's

(27:26):
not playing in this segment of the rivalry series.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
I think the US roster is pretty standardly what we expected.
I think the surprising one, well, we haven't they have
it officially.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
Not who they have in camp is what we expected.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
Canada announced their roster of twenty five players and of
sort of their regulars and Renee Debienne, Brian Jenner, Emily
Clark and Jocelyn Morock are not.

Speaker 2 (27:47):
On the roster. It's it will be.

Speaker 3 (27:52):
I am unsure if that is them trying to get
look at some of their newer folks and give them
some time on the ice, or if there are reasons
those players are not there. Canada does not tend to
like generally, it has not done something like that leaves
they're more you know, respected players, they're more veteran players
off the roster just to give others a chance to

(28:13):
get a look. That It is very sort of unlike
hockey Canada. So I think that does make me wonder
if there's more intuitive and if there are injuries that
are being recovered, fun things like that, particularly because with
the PDUB not starting yet or not entirely sure, and
then sort of the newer folks. Some of these players
are brand new, some are you know, have maybe played
in one international tournament. The names and the roster Katie Tabin,

(28:36):
Hannah Miller, Kaitlyn Clark, Jen Gardner, Darryl Watts, v Gas Gong,
Chloe Promurano, and Kaylie Osbourne. So I feel like, you know,
with Ev and Kalle Osborne on that list, I think,
you know, with Anreney out there, just they're trying to
figure out who what their goalie situation looks like. I think,
you know, ann Is is the clear number one, and
then you have Emond smash Meyer and the two newbies,

(28:58):
and so I think they're trying to figure out, you know,
what that that threesome will look like with and obviously
already slotted in. But yeah, interesting interesting changes for Canada
and again just really not their normalm to have done that.
So it'll that will be interesting to see on the
US side, you know, it'll be interesting you.

Speaker 2 (29:18):
Both Kirsten Sims.

Speaker 3 (29:19):
And Leila Edwards were injured. I don't think that either
was playing to their full strength. Kirsten probably more so
with playing more so than Laila. Lelas still looked like
she was favoring things a little for Wisconsin this weekend,
So how much they play will be interesting and what
we see from them. And then a couple of players
that were pulled in, you know, to this camp maybe

(29:41):
that we that had have had time away and things
like that. So yeah, it'll be see interesting to see
how that how much ice time some of the players get.

Speaker 1 (29:51):
I know, for Leila Edwards, the game Thursday in Cleveland,
obviously it was a big circle on the calendar going
in because that's where she's from. It and then when
the injury happened, you start kind of counting the weeks.
This was a few weeks ago. I'm like, well, she
can be back by then, and I don't think there

(30:12):
would be there would be a lot of questions if
she came back and played for the US in Cleveland
and hadn't played for Wisconsin yet, and so I think
that was a little bit of the hurdle to get
her there. But I don't really know what the overall
situation is with that with their.

Speaker 3 (30:28):
Injury, right, I mean she she played essentially like full
minutes for Wisconsin. It just looked like she was a
little tentative at times. So yeah, that that will be interesting.
It's I I was scheduled to talk to her about
getting to play in her hometown the day she got injured.

Speaker 2 (30:46):
Obviously she did was not given.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
To postseason media availability after that, so, you know, for
her sake, I'm glad. I'm excited for her she gets
to play at home. I know it's it's a big
deal for anybody that gets to do that, but particularly
you're talking someone for a really non traditional market and
that this is a big thing happening in Cleveland this
weekend so or this week So yeah, it will be

(31:07):
I hope she at least, you know, I hope she
gets a chance to get out there and play.

Speaker 2 (31:11):
And yeah, only things.

Speaker 3 (31:13):
You know, some players that like had been out of
sort of the regular rotation are in, like Caleb Barnes
has been in and out, and a few other players
and my passion seems to be a regular now in
camp on defense from Ohio State. So she's someone I
will want to see Hannah Bilka again with someone that
has been a little in and out a favor, So.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
Uh yeah, it will.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
I think how the lines shakeout and how players are used,
I think is what we will be seeing and be
interested in watching in these two games.

Speaker 1 (31:43):
I'm I'm interested in whether there's more games been shipped
than normal in terms of what you're putting out there,
knowing that this is part of the really next four
months right of the lead up and then the Olympics.
So now you could say that, you know, that's always
the case when you've got the World Championship at the

(32:05):
end of.

Speaker 2 (32:05):
The season next Yeah, I agree, it takes it to another.

Speaker 1 (32:08):
Lesson, So yeah, I do. So I wonder whether you
know what Canada is doing with this roster who will
see on the ice for the US, whether we'll be
seeing more college players because they're in season versus the
p up players that haven't necessarily gotten into you know,
maybe they've been on the ice obviously but not in
season form yet.

Speaker 3 (32:31):
Absolutely dominated these early games of the rivalry series when
the thinks in large part because of those college players,
and then you know, Canada sort of took the win
by winning the later games of the series. So yeah,
I think for sure Ussay is sort of counting on
having that edge of having more collegiate players.

Speaker 1 (32:50):
Yeah, all right, well that's gonna be fun to watch
this week. There's also other international play going on or
activity happening, so college players are involved in other things
around the world this week.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
Yeah, the Little Hockey Games. Little l I d L
is a grocery store. That's the women's zero Hockey Tour. Interestingly,
like CHECKI is taking most of their Olympic roster, Switzerland
has is not called in most of their players, and
then Flewitinland and Sweden are sort of half and half
on their regulars and also trying out some new players.
One of the interesting things in Sweden is that they

(33:25):
have not called in Emma Soderberg, so they're trying out
some other backup goaltenders. Again, probably similar to what we
just talked about with Canada in terms of figuring out
what happens, you know, if it's not Soderberg in nuts
so you know Finland, Yeah, yedia Hirikosky's coming back from
you know, having been sick and had surgery. There's you know,
there were some injuries in the peed UB of some

(33:47):
international players and so yeah, I think this will be
a good first Like, it is interesting to me that
of the four teams, CHECKI is the only one that's
really bringing you know, fundamentally there. They're only you know,
they're top tier roster. So the games are taking place
in Sweden, and I think that is part of like
why you're seeing a bit more of the Swedish Beast

(34:09):
players there too. But I would imagine some of the internet,
you know, some of the younger the rookies that are
in the NCAA this year, Hills Suns in a roundio,
some of those players that have had really great to
the season will be interesting to see how they get used.
And similar to what we're talking about in the rivalry series,
those players that are probably a few steps ahead of
everybody else at the moment.

Speaker 1 (34:30):
Right, all right, anything else internationally you want to mention
before we turned back to NCAA hockey.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
I don't think so. I'm probably forgetting stuff.

Speaker 3 (34:39):
But it's exciting, right, Like talking about Olympics in abstracts
for so long that it's exciting to see the teams
to actually get out there. And I think, you know,
I know, the players have talked a little bit about
just you know, they've gone to camps, but to actually
go out and play full games is what.

Speaker 2 (34:55):
They're excited about.

Speaker 1 (34:58):
We're essentially just over the three months away from the
start of the Olympics. So yeah, it's gonna it's gonna
start feeling a lot more real here really soon. So
that will be fun to see. Okay, let's come back here.
We've got just one game between ranked teams this week,
after there were five each day on last Friday and Saturday.

(35:20):
This week, that is number eleven Clarkson at number seven
Quinnipiac on Saturday. These are both teams that are three
and one with nine points in Ecac tied for second
with Princeton. Princeton tied for second with Princeton. You know,
that's that's worth mentioning too. Off to a good start,
Clarkston coming back after that shutout loss to Dartmouth. We'll

(35:43):
be interesting to see how they bounce back from that.
We've seen We mentioned before how Quinnipiac bounced back from
their first loss with a resounding set of victories last week.
What are you what are you looking for in this one?

Speaker 3 (35:56):
Well, that's one of those sort of rivalry games where
I'm not sure any of anything else that has happened matters,
because when those two teams play each other, they're if
they're like so locked in on each other, they know
each other so well that you know, it doesn't matter.
I think a team could go into that winless and
still come out with a win kind of thing, right, Like,
it's just some of the and all the other stuff

(36:16):
doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (36:17):
It's it's all about beating that team.

Speaker 3 (36:19):
And I think, you know, Clarkston, like you said, looking
to come back from that loss and prove that they're
you know, they are a team that is in contention
for the national tournament and things like that. So like
they're they need they have that anyway, and then they
definitely want to Kinna want to do that against their rival,
you know, interestingly, two teams that tend to be pretty
defensive but also have great offensive scorings. I mean, the

(36:40):
thing about Quinnipiac with with LaMarsh and all that scoring
is that like that's just so not normally quinnipiax m
oh that is a defensive team normally, and for you know,
primarily or three quarters of what they're focusing on the
game is in Quinnipiac Quinnipiac home that you know helps them,
but also I think probably fuels Clarkson a little bit too. Yeah,

(37:03):
I think that's we do have a light schedule, like
I said, because a lot of teams take that bye
week for because this has always been an international break weekend.
It used to be four Nations. But I'm excited then
that I really get to focus on that game.

Speaker 1 (37:16):
Yeah, there are a couple others that are are kind
of worth for sure mentioning. We're paying attention to a
couple in hockey East Vermont at number nine Northeastern Friday
and Saturday. We've seen Vermont have some success and here
and there Northeastern kind of doing this continual build back
up to the places where we've seen them before in

(37:40):
the national rankings. Now off the nine, that one stands
out to me. And also a BC home and home
series with number eight Yukon because we've seen BC have
some success in conference early in the season. It's getting
a little bit tested now. We saw the Eagles lose
at Vermont get a real tests with Yukon this week.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
Yeah, I you kind of got great goaltending against great
scoring from from BC.

Speaker 2 (38:08):
So far this season, So I think that's going to
be interesting.

Speaker 3 (38:10):
And I think Connecticut could just use a little a
little push on their offensive side. They have, you know,
some of the great players they have, you know, the
returning Rooky of the Year and things like that, and
so yeah, I think those are those are games that
will propel whoever comes out on top, I think quite
a bit. And so yeah, there's sort of a lot
to play for in Hockey East this weekend with these series.

(38:31):
I think everybody's got a little there.

Speaker 2 (38:33):
You know.

Speaker 3 (38:33):
New Hampshire had a decent start and had some big
games this weekend. They scored a ton of goals last weekend,
and we've seen Providence have some upset wins. So the
New Hampshire Providence is is a really interesting series as well.
Hockey East is definitely sort of taken center stage this
weekend with these these sets of games.

Speaker 1 (38:52):
Indeed it is. We also have bu traveling to Maine.
One of those games is on Nessen, so if you
have that, that's an option for you this weekend. I
believe that's the Saturday game, Saturday afternoon contest at the
Alfond Arena. So yeah, it should be some some good

(39:13):
watching going on your opportunities to watch some daytime hockey
and on Saturday, and then there might be a couple
of games at night too. I'm just paging through this.
It looks like everything is pretty much during the day.
There's a Delaware Brown game on on Saturday evening though,
so it's got that to look forward.

Speaker 3 (39:30):
To travel partners. Obviously, you mentioned Clerk's and at Quinipiac,
but that also puts Clarkson at Princeton and Saint Lawrence
at Quinnipiac on Friday night. And I think you know,
we were talking about Princeton maybe being a surprise, so
that's that's not an easy game for Clarkson.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
Saint Lawrence has been up and down too.

Speaker 3 (39:46):
I don't think you know, Quinnipiac can look past that
game at all either, So that's an interesting set of
travel partners.

Speaker 1 (39:51):
There, right, Absolutely, Okay, I think that just about wraps
it up for this week, doesn't I think so. All Right, Well,
we thank you so much for tuning in again. We
hope you'll be back with us next week when we'll
recap the rivalry series and then look ahead to what's
coming as we get deeper into November. Boy, it's November already,

(40:14):
we're really rolling along in the season here, all right
for Nicole, I'm Todd. Thanks for listening to the podcast.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
