special guests, the legendary Jelly Bricks, Central Pennsylvania's favorite four piece rock and
(14:15):
roll band. Thank you for callingus legendary. Yeah no, it's not
debating, not in this room. It's not that's debatable. Okock is going

my left and you're right if you'relistening on the radio. Bryce Connor,
Hello, how are you yeah? And what do you do in the band?
(14:35):
Bryce, I play guitar, andI sing and play guitar, okay.
And then to his right and myleft, that's Garrick Chow Hello.
And what do you do with theJelly Bricks? Okay? I play bass
and sing and play bass okay. And Larry Kennedy, Hello, what do
you do in the Jelly Bricks?Well, I play guitar and sing and
(14:56):
play guitar. There's a lot ofguitar playing and singing. There's almost twice
as much guitar and bass playing asthere is a does somebody else do anything
else? At the same time?Wow? Does anybody in the band do
something other than guitar? But?Oh wait, well look at that's right
there, Tom, Yes, welleveryone bring and I play guitar, drums,
(15:18):
lots of percussion, lots of shakers, some vocals, yes, lots
of very good. And I willsay this, one of the things that
you guys are known for that Iabsolutely love about the Jelly Bricks are your
amazing harmonies. The work that youguys put into uh to arranging the harmonies,
getting them so tight. It's whatmakes the Jelly Bricks sound. Thank
(15:41):
you, thank you. That's prettyfreaking good for right, off the cuff
man, say what, I'm harborShop Quartets. That's a little ragots,
little bobber shop, and we cancut your hair if you just come on
down. Let's see how long haveyou guys been the jelly bricks. Who's
(16:04):
going to take that one, Garrek, We're coming up on year twenty eight.
You're twenty eight, twenty eight yearsand I know this is not the
OG lineup. The original lineup.Garrick, Bryce and Larry have been in
the band from day one, butTommy, you're not the original drums.
This is the OMG lineup. Okay, No, I'm still I'm still the
(16:26):
new guy. I joined in nineteenninety nine. I've barely been in the
band. Yeah, just barely,Yeah, just barely. It's like,
what twenty four years, while oneday you'll be accepted as My piece of
that story is that when our originaldrummer Lane Wheeler decided to leave the band,
tom was actually at the very nextgig we played, and stepped onto
(16:48):
the stage and started playing bongos.Nobody asked him to play. That's actually
true. No one asked me toI kind of volunteered myself and it was
at the Vault in Harrisville. Yes, and Ray Rossi happened to be standing
next to us because he managed thatplace at the time, and he said,
I have a bunch of percussion stuff. Hold on, before these guys
could even say no, we don'twant this drunk dude on stage with us
(17:14):
who doesn't know our songs playing bongodrums or whatever else. So, but
that's what every band wants to say. Obviously I was amazing drums. Because
I'm here, I still am.You must have been. You'll passed the
ad audition. Oh my god, very good. All right, So let's
I got so many more questions, but I want to get to some music.
In fact, this is the longawaited first song that you guys have
(17:37):
put out in how long first newsong since twenty nineteen, which is when
we put out our some kind ofLucky album. Okay, and this is
as yet untitled brand new album fromthe Jelly Bricks. This is the very
first single featuring Bryce on lead vocals. This is Monday's Never on the Local
Show on the River ninety seventy threegood for Me, Tuesday needs to go

(21:08):
new single from the Jelly bricks Mondaysnever on the local show on the River
ninety seven three. That's the firstdigital only song that they've ever come out
with, Garrick, Why did youmake that choice? Did we make that
choice or did our label make thatchoice? Actually, it came together pretty
quickly. We've been working on thisnew album for quite some time, and
(21:30):
our label decided they wanted something outbefore the end of the year, which
we're always happy to do. Sowe pulled the song from what we've been
working on and we decided the fastway to do it was just to do
a digital only release, and itcame together in a couple of weeks.
I think, yeah, And actuallyI'm here to tell you that finally this
weekend or this past weekend, somebodyasked me about a physical copy. But
(21:52):
it took quite a while for someoneto ask. I was curious how long
it would take for someone to say, well, can I get like a
CD? Yeah, Saturday night, because the physical CDs. I don't even
have a CD player in my caranymore, either the or my wife's car.
There's not even one here in thestudio. There's one CD player in
the whole building, and it's ina studio down the hall. Yeah,
(22:12):
that's the wave of the future,it is. But it's great to have
a hard copy. So when isthe new album coming out? Don't know,
actually next year okay, twenty twentyfour. I mean I can tell
you this. We're closer to finishingit than not, and I think we're
all pretty excited about the music onit. How many songs have you got
recorded or at least close to beingfinished? Bryce, I think there's like
(22:36):
fourteen, maybe fifteen something like that, So that's a lot. There's a
lot more in that actually, butwe're not really sure how many it'll be.
But it's gonna be cool, allright. And I know that Monday
Where can you get Monday's never anywhereyou get? Well? Being all digital,
it's available on all the major streamingservices. We have it up on
YouTube for free. You can listenthere along with the video. And yeah,
(22:57):
and Little Steven's been feature in ittoo, right, Oh, absolutely,
in his underground garage. That's socool man. He loves you guys
almost as much as me. Almost. Yeah, it's worth noting. I
mean, while we're here talking aboutanother radio guy that this station that we're
on right now is actually the firstradio station that ever played the jellybrick.
(23:18):
That's right, Michael Anthony Smith onOpen Mic Night. Would that have been
way back at Kinky boot Beast oreven before the four Kinky boot Beast even
Okay he was an early adopter.Yeah, how many total Jellybricks albums are
there? And don't be like Idon't know, like I know, you
know, actually you know, Ithink we have to count. Wow,
I know it's seven, you knowhow I know because our jokey jokey selves
(23:42):
naming our record, our seventh record, Some kind of Lucky Lucky seven.
Yeah, that's the last one.So this will be number eight. Whatever
it comes out in twenty twenty four, this will be number eight. And
I think at that point it's almostclose to one hundred original recorded Jelly Bricks
songs after this next record comes out. That's incredible. It's kind of a
(24:03):
cool, little Miles milestone, nodoubt. So we're gonna go to another
Jelly Bricks song from this last album, Some kind of Lucky. This is
Corner of My eye. Who singslead on this one? That would be
me, Larry Larry Kennedy. Allright, so here are the Jelly bricks.
This is corner of my eye onthe Local Show on the River ninety
seventy three. It should be improbable, Stacy Sunday, we're keeping busy,
(24:36):
Daddy be Monday. This resolution shouldhave for our self improvement the dissolution of
our protest movement. Con again,do we see this connergain from the corner
(24:56):
of We're working hard and yet itjust gets harder. We know so much
about are we getting smarter? Wedo the same thing? Ever, Stump
you wonder why we really thought aboutgreat as the cons a cat? Did
(25:22):

for me to wacause I ain't gotno money. No, I don't got
no money, and I'm just hangingout around. I like to play a
lot of real million there. Soif you kind of doll her, you
can stay. Then you can saythat you want there. I don't want
(30:44):
to run out the money. No, I ain't got no money in that.
I'm working seven straight and levens. But no it's chip. No,

(32:50):
ki can say that I want you, honey, but I have money,
and no, I ain't got nomoney in that from Some kind of Lucky
Jelly Bricks, No Money, It'sthe local Show on the River ninety seven
to three, our special guests tonightthe Jelly Bricks, and that's a two
(33:15):
for right there, from their mostrecent full length release, Some kind of
Lucky That is No Money and beforethat Missus Misery featuring drummer Tommy Christich on
the lead vocals on that. Thatis correct, Glenn, did you So?
I'm curious, do you guys singthe songs you write or do you
guys all kind of collaborate writing andthen just figure out who would be best
(33:36):
to sing a particular song. Theway we do it now is the person
who wrote the song sings it.That's usually what we do, sort of
like the Beatles sort of. Imean, we used to write a little
bit more as a band together. In the last few years we've kind of
been writing separately and then bringing thesongs into the band. So Missus Misery
is yours. And right before thatwe did Corner of My Eye and that's
(33:57):
lair. Yeah, And a lotof that had to do with coming out
of the pandemic when we didn't seeeach other for I think literally a year.
Yeah, right, you guys werewe were each other. That might
be why yall are still together tothis day. But we actually, you
know, decided to we all weused band funds and bought everybody recording equipment,
so we just you know, sentsong ideas back and forth and everybody
(34:22):
would just put their parts on thesong. We just passed it back and
forth and we build the build thesongs that way. It was such a
crazy time, the pandemic. Itjust really was. But so so much
technology came out of that, andto me, especially locally, no one
has been on the forefront of technologylike you guys. Your videos are always
fantastic, but even during the pandemic, you guys put the videos out where
(34:45):
you were playing together, which isvery hard to do, which there's a
lot of trickery involved. But asmuch as I hate to give him so
much credit for it, really aboutninety nine percent of the credit for that
has to go to Garrick Chow, who is just a natural when it comes
to seeing opportunities for us to usetechnology to do something new and exciting,
(35:07):
and that's been consistent for the wholetime the band has been together. Well,
that's quite the compliment, Garrick, because it's true. Your videos are
always great. You've all looked youalways, your social media, all your
presence everything. You guys are alwaysyou know, doing the latest thing.
Appreciate you saying that, Yeah,of course, So you guys always do
a lot of recording in all differentkinds of places, not just here in
(35:30):
Harrisburg area. You guys go toNew York a lot, and if recording
in fact, the album you're doingnow and even Some kind of Lucky,
wasn't that a lot of that recordedin New York? Price? It was
actually, Yes, Renegade Nation, which is fantastic with Jeff Sanoff, who
is our main man and yeah, producer, engineer. The guy's amazing and
it's a great room to work in. They got lots of great toys to
(35:52):
play with. We love it there. Yeah, and we also do some
work in Harrisburg. We got towork at m d W Productions and make
sure I get those initials right atMike Waskovic's place. And he's done a
lot of great work for us aswell. He's doing a lot of work
for a lot of people right now. Yeah, I'm really good. Some
I'm kind of Lucky was kind ofmade all over the place if you look
(36:14):
at the credits of that. Yeah, it was made a lot of different
studio Maryland. Yeah, Yeah,I was madly four or five different states
obscure a sound, okay, AndI was actually just thinking, since you're
playing no Money, I remember aboutthat. We tried to do some recording
on our own in our own rehearsalspace, and the lead guitar solos on
(36:36):
No Money were all recorded by Bryceon a little solid state amp and Garrett's
basement and they were used, andthey were used. Oh that's cool,
man. I didn't know that itwas really cool. Yeah. I love
the sound of them too. Itworked out really good, well done Grek
Jellybricks Trivia. Uh. So Ihad the opportunity. There's a project every
year for those that are listening thatmaybe don't live in Central PA. If
you're listening on the podcast, there'sa charity event year to help the homeless
(37:00):
in Harrisburg called Joy to the Burgand it's like the fifth year. Last
year, Uh, they had askedme if I would do a song because
I've like been part of it orI've mc the concerts or whatever. So
they asked if I would contribute asong, and I'm like, well,
yeah, but I don't want tojust be some dude, uh, just
playing the acoustic guitar and singing asong. So I thought, let me
(37:21):
ask my friends the Jelly Bricks ifwe could do a cover of the Tom
Petty song. Christmas all over Again. And I think I asked you Bryce.
I think I was the one Ireached out to you first to say
could you run it by the guys? Yes, And it took a long
time to convince them, but Iwas in immediately to do what Larry had
(37:42):
to send some stuff off to hislawyer to ask it was was. Yeah,
it took a while. Actually,I really loved the song you chose,
so I was kind of like, yes, Garrek, what were your
thoughts? Larry said, I mean, we're all huge Tom Petty fans to
begin with, I know it wasan it. Yeah, so I thought
mentioned we're all huge Glenn Hamilton fans. Oh look at all the love here.
(38:05):
I was just gonna say that.Well, and uh, I couldn't
think of a better band to doto get the Tom Petty sound. And
uh, if you haven't heard it, we're gonna play it for you right
now. This was on last year'sJoy to the Burg which you can still
download and if you buy that compilation, the money still goes to help the
homeless. This is the Jelly Brickswith me, uh doing a cover of
Tom Petties Christmas All over Again. It's the River ninety seven three. It's
(38:29):
the local show. We're it's Christmastime again. Decorations roll home by the
(38:54):
fire and by this singing all thebest I'm ringing now that it's dressless all
over again, cap can long distintresslot since I haven't seen them in a
(39:28):
long long time. Yeah, Ikind of you missed them. I just
don't want to kiss some knowing it'scresless all over agin, Yeah I can
(39:53):
and all over town. Little kid'sgonna get down. Christmas is a rocket
time. But your body next tomine underneath the missile. So we go,
(40:14):
we go, whoa. Everybody's sayingall the belts I'm bringing out and
(40:37):
it's Transmas all the again. Yeahyeah, write down our blocks, little
kids start to rock. Christmas isracking time. Put your body, mister
(41:05):
mine underneath the missile. To weweek. Hello, marry Chris less time,
come in fine, happy and therebyyou're five. How you have a
(41:30):
good one. I mama gets ashopping done and it's Tresmas hollow akm our
baby's creams all aka, oh yeahand all thank you. Let's see.
(42:28):
I want a new Rickenbacker guitar twofender basement the Jelly Bricks song. This
is the local show on the Riverninety seven three and on iHeartRadio with our
friends the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall ofFame, and we are sponsored by Renewal
by Anderson. That is the coversong that the Jelly Bricks and I collaborated
(42:52):
on last year for Joy to theBurg Tom Petty's Christmas All over Again.
And my daughter Emily is also onthat as well. She's she's like such
a super fan of you guys likemyself. We're a fan of her too.
She sings on it and plays thejingle bells on it and stuff.
But that let her play the jinglebells and she sang some background vocals.
She killed it. She did agreat job. We had mentioned that was
(43:13):
a day of fun with Derek Houstondown at the green Room also, that
was such a fun that we didall that in one day. And we
still like in September, warm afternoonsinging Christmas music in the holidays spirit well
and now this year we UH bothyou guys and UH and I have separate
projects this year on Joy to theBerg five. What did you guys do?
(43:36):
The egos got too big, didn'tthey split off? And go solo.
That didn't take long, did it? So what did you guys do?
Yeah, we broke up Fleetwood brickand and at any rate, Yeah,
so we we actually have contributed. It's a it's an older recording from
earlier in our career, from aboutninety eight, but it's a Christmas song
(43:59):
that was co written with Bob Welshand Jeffrey Gaines. Now neither one of
them actually participated in the finishing ofthe project, but they handed us an
unfinished Christmas song to work on andwe finished that up. It's called We'll
Be Together the Christmas Song Awesome, and that's on this year's Joy to the
(44:21):
Berg. The one I did wasbecause you know, Shae Quinn has the
David Bowie tribute band band who soldthe world, so I thought, man
if I do another one next year. I got to talk to Shay and
we got to do the band crosbyDavid Bowie Christmas classic Little Drummer Boy Peace
on Earth, and he was allabout it. And the guys from GK
Visual did a video. But wedid that at the green room as well.
(44:45):
And you're gonna do Mariah Carey nextyear, right, You're gonna do
all I want for Christmas. Yes, yes, only if you guys backed
me up on that, I absolutelydo it. Okay, No, no,
all right, before we go,appreciate you guys coming in because I
know how busy you all are.How did you get the name the Jelly
(45:06):
Bricks? And does anybody ever askyou that question? Do you remember Bryce?
I think I do. I don'tthink anyone really asked us much.
But our good friend, the Oneand Only Red's Troop came up with that
name of the Martini Brothers in theUnderground Cartoons. Amazing drummer. Everybody knows
him, he's the best in thegreen room. He was just like,
what about this? And we werelike okay, and then that's just how
(45:28):
it worked. He literally just saidthe jelly Bricks. Yeah. We were
having one of those brainstorming sessions thatall new bands go through where you just
sit there and come up with, you know, let's call ourselves dust Lamp,
you know, just looking around theroom and trying to figure out what
to call ourselves and Star Wars sound. I think he was just sitting there
quietly listening to us come up withhorrible names, and he just kind of
(45:49):
mentioned that and it stuck. Well, I love you guys have meaning behind
that, if you formed some kindof meaning behind it, because it's pretty
obviously the metaphor. But I'd liketo hear what you guys think. Well,
I know that we had something wewere aiming for, which was basically
a name that would allow us tokind of go out to color outside the
lines. So the name Jelly Brickswas meant to be a name that would
(46:14):
answer the question if we were yellingand screaming, and answer the question if
we were just singing a lighthearted songor something sentimental. So we figured this
name would fit both of those concepts. I've always kind of thought the jelly
Bricks, the jelly would be likethe softer not soft, but like the
sugary pop kind of that runs throughit, but also the brick being the
(46:38):
hard rock. Yeah, what wasyour tagline, Bryce? I think that
sweet like jelly hits you like abrick. Yeah, That's what I've always
thought of. Yeah, that's inthe corporation's slogan the book. Somewhere they
want to assault you with sweetness.Yeah, I love it. That's why
I was on the right track. You were right in the exact place.
(46:59):
Yes, I am honorary jelly bricks. You are, man, You're in.
You're in right on the fifth jellybrick. Yeh, I wish you
got too many fifth jelly bricks, man, you got so many, right,
because so much goes into making recordedmusic and the whole process of being
a band. How and you guyshave been together for so long. It's
it's it's amazing how because being aroundyou guys many times the genuine love and
(47:24):
not only love, but you guyslike each other. You know, you
guys enjoy being around each other. That's what we like people to think.
Yes, well you fake act foractors playing the roles. We're like the
monkeys in that way. We werecast to pretend we like each other.
Well, But there really are alot of fifth jelly bricks because we love
collaborating because you know, it's it'sone thing to to you know, rehearse
(47:47):
in a basement by ourselves, butwhen we get to work with other people
who bring their own ideas or orlook at our music through their own lens,
it it really gives us different directionsto go that we never would have
thought of. There aren't too manybands that are open to that kind of
elaboration. You know, they justkind of want to have their own thing,
and they're kind of nervous that somebodymight ruin it or mess it up,
or they might be thought of ina different way. Yeah, there's
(48:09):
definitely plenty of work that happens betweenthe four of us that sort of when
the fifth person comes in, it'susually around the time when we're starting to
record something, so that's kind ofan interesting point to bring someone along into
the process and get their opinion oneverything and kind of like a fresh set
of ears after we've been listening tosomething for a while and trying to rehearse
(48:30):
it and play it. So there'sbeen plenty of times where that fifth person
kind of came in and said, why don't you do X, Y and
Z in a song and it madethe song and it made the recording a
lot better. You guys just keepgetting better and better at it. And
I can't wait to hear the restof the stuff you've recorded. But make
sure you listen and get your owncopy of Monday's Never That is the newest
(48:52):
recording from the Jellybricks and from theirforthcoming release that will be out sometime in
twenty twenty four. Will you guyscome back when that comes out? Definitely,
no way. Give me some shoutouts to where you guys are playing
in the next like month or two. No gigs. We're pretty much in
(49:12):
full uh finished the album mode ofthis can. In the past, we've
tried to balance between lots of gigsand recording, and we've found that really
the recording sort of takes a backseat during those times because we do like
to rehearse for every show that wedo, and because it takes up our
time, the recording usually takes aback seat. So this time we're trying
to focus and just concentrate on therecording till it's There are some shows booked
(49:37):
in the spring that we haven't announced. Okay, so it's coming down the
pipe. Come back and let usknow. Retiring, I would think that
if you want to have some fun, go to the Jelly Bricks YouTube channel
uh and check out all of theincredible videos that they've made over the years,
and you'll see what I was talkingabout earlier about their cutting edge stuff.
They're always fun. If you've neverseen the Jelly Bricks, you gotta
(49:59):
go see them. There's so muchmuch fun to see live and again go
grab a cot your copy of Monday'sNever digitally. Thank you so much man
for having us. Thanks un thankyou always great, always great having those
guys in the jelly bricks. I'mGlenn Hamilton Brandon Valentine, President and founder
of the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall ofFame. And like you said top of
(50:19):
the show, those guys have wonBest Rock Group. Yep, that's right
in the past, and they're onthe ballot for consideration for future induction into
the Hall of Fame. That's greatlocal legends and man, those guys are
fun to listen to. How funnyare they? And you know, it's
like one of those things where youhave a local band that's been so popular
for so long and stay together songIt's it's like a marriage, you know,
(50:40):
you spend a lot of time withthe band, it becomes a team.
And those guys are one of thebest, shining examples of them,
no doubt about it, and justgreat guys all the way around too.
All right, So we are takinga break from the show next Sunday for
Thanksgiving because it's a holiday weekend.After that, I think we're going to
