threes own Glenn Hamilton with eleven eleven. How about it. Thanks for playing
that, dude, I appreciate it. It's a great too. Thanks Mike,
Michael Anthony Smith here. I playedthat quite a bit on my own
right are on us when I wasplaying local music here on Open Michael Open
Mike. That was a huge hiton that show. Thanks dude. There's
so many great people that played onmy album, which is what I'm most
(25:08):
proud of. Red Troupe from theMartini Brothers is on drums, John Catalano
on that track on the mandolin. We've got John Skiffington on bass. Noel
Gevers is on the keys, andhe produced the whole album. I mean
it's it's got an all star cast. Skyline Sessions is available on all the
digital platforms now. It came outreally good. Thanks man. It was
(25:29):
a great group effort, and sodid George. Mike. This is your
second album, Michael Anthony Smith andthe Dirty Thieving Gypsies, right. The
new album is called Destiny, andwe recorded it down in Carlisle where we
did the first album. And I'mstill coming to the coming to the terms
of the fact that we have asecond album out. How long since the
first one? First one came outin twenty twenty fourteen or twenty fifteen,
(25:53):
we were recording it, yeah, and then almost nine years later, granted
we were something I'm putting one outa lot sooner than this, but then
we had the little thing of apandemic. Hal I got really sick and
actually lost part of my right footand I was out of commission for a
long time, and I thought,if people are gonna think that I'm gonna
come limping back into the music business, you got another thing coming. And
(26:15):
I decided we're going to put outa good, strong, album. And
that's what I hope we did.The listeners are the ones that are going
to make that decision. It's reallygood and so basically you're the Tom Shoals
of Central Pa. You're like nineyears eight nine years between albums. Hopefully
I'm not going to make a habitout of it. Yeah, man,
this is really good. Let's playthe title track, This is Destiny Michael
(26:37):
Anthony Smith and the Dirty Thieving Gypsieson the Local Show on the River ninety
seven three. Do you think thatthat is strange? Love? You have?
(27:03):
What you? What I do?Day? If they got strange?
What two? Where is the imagine? When I look at the house,
it's not there. Looking all around, I can't find your way anywhere.
(27:30):
Do you think that is strange?Where do I go? Day? If
they got a strange what two?Destiny? Destiny, stick your fack tchanger,
(28:27):
lower this tchanger, my bear sun, Destiny, this the day,
this day, thisstiny. That isMichael Anthony Smith and the Dirty Thieving Gypsies
(28:56):
on the local show on the Riverninety seven three. Fact, that's the
title track of their new album, and Mike is our very special guest,
Moss, It's always great to haveyou here. How did you come up
with the title for the album inthat song? Well, the funny thing
is, we were recording some otherparts of the album. I brought in
Donna Jean Foster to do some backingvocals on some other's songs. Incredible,
(29:17):
She's an amazing singer. I'm gonnago on the record right now and say,
Donna Jean Foster is a great singer. So it's great human being.
Great human being. In a matterof fact, so is Susie Brown and
Tony Lavarre some of the other peoplewere singing on the album. But we're
talking about We're talking talking about DonnaJean right now. And the cover art
of the album was taken by amutual friend of her. Name is Tina,
(29:40):
a mutual friend of Donna's in mine. I said, I was showing
the cover art to Rick, theproducer, who he also did a great
job, said what do you thinkof the cover art? And then we
showed it to Donna. She goes, ooh, you need to call the
album Destiny, and I, like, I had like a shocked look on
my face. I thought, there'sno possible way she could have knowing that
there was a song on this albumalready called Destiny. That's incredible. So
(30:03):
you know what you just named thealbum. You know you did it.
So it was all thanks to Donna. Geene Foster cue Donna Jean. It's
very and it sounds so good. You have almost an Ozzy quality, Brandon
and I were talking about, youhave almost an Ozzy quality of your voice
on that song. That's the firsttime I've heard anybody tell me that actually
heard it right away, like misterCrowley. Yeah, I mean, I'm
(30:25):
wait till I'm playing out live.I'm gonna go into that. I'm gonna
go right into mister Crawley, let'splay another song from the album. Tell
me about who's playing drums on thisparticular track. We're talking about song of
Love now, this song. Whenwe were recording it was not long after
I had my surgery and I justmight chops just weren't there and I was
(30:47):
filling in, just just putting thedemo together for the song. And finally
Rick Or who's an awesome producer. He looks at missus, Michael, this
is just not working. Let meask you a question, who did you
want the drums to sound like?I thought, that's pretty easy. I
mean, my first go to thoughtfor drummers is going to be Joe Vitally,
(31:07):
who played drums for Joe Walsh andBarnstorm, Crosby Stills, Nash,
the Eagles, Buffalo Springfiel. He'splayed for so many people. And Rick
turns around asks me. He goes, all right, I got another question
for you. Do you know howto get in touch with him? Yeah,
actually I do, so. Ireached out to to to Rick to
(31:27):
see if he was available to dothis. He yep, here's here's what
you need to do. Send methis, send me this, to me
this, and it's gonna cost youX. And I'm talking to a friend
of mine who lives in Australia whois a huge Joe it Tally, Joe
Walsh, all those other bands. He's a fan of theirs as well.
And he said, Michael, letstook care of the problem for you.
(31:48):
Just record the song. He's goingto do the drums on it. For
you, and I'm still, likeI told you, I'm still coming to
terms of the fact that we havea second album out. My childhood hero
was on my album. Amazing, dude, that's so cool, and I
owe a lot of that, notonly to Mark for paying for there,
for crying out loud, but toRick Johns for pulling the trigger because so
(32:10):
many other people brought out so muchin this album, and I don't want
to just come in here, saidman. I put out a great album.
Look at me, look at me. No, No, Rick John's
did a great thing. So didTony Lavari and who else was on there,
Donna, Gene Foster, everybody elsethat's so much on there, and
Tina Welsh's picture spoke volumes. Well, I'm telling you, man, it
(32:34):
is a great collaboration. It's agreat showcase of your talent, obviously,
and also the talent that we havehere in Central PA. Let's play it
right now with Jovi talon drums andmikel Anthony Smith and the dirty thieving Gypsies.
This is song of Love from thenew album Destiny on the Local Show
on the River nineteen seven three. Is this is my sullo is this is
(33:29):
my sullo singing for Yo, singingfor Yo, singing for Yo. Hollo,
(34:00):
this is this is my soul. This is this is my soul,
(34:22):
singing for Yo, saying for Yo, stinging up for Yo. Who no
(35:15):
singing all Yo singing folliot sing foyo. Oh man, dude, that's awesome.
(35:55):
That is that Michael Anthony Smith andthe Dirty Thieving Gypsies with special guests
drummer the legendary Joe Vitally. Dude, that sounds so great. It's called
Song of Love. It's like yourhomage to Jimmy Hendrix. It's kind of
yeah, very heavy. I loveit. I wrote that song in this
building, actually, did you really? Yeah, like I have the ideas
(36:15):
in my head, but like wehad like the performance studio upstairs. Yeah,
we had like some amps and Icame in here one day and just
sat down. The demo that Irecorded of that song was recorded here,
No kidding. It just started riffingupstairs. Yeah, that's killer man,
that's great, and it's so coolthat you got Joe to play on it.
Well, still can't believe it.The album is great. It's called
(36:35):
Destiny and it's available on all theplatforms. It's so great to have you
back here in the studio. Man, it's great to be here. Thank
you for having me song of Love. You know the title there. I
mean, the local music scene hasso much love for you, Michael Anthony
Smith, for being one of thefounding fathers and supporting our local music scene
via the Homegrown Show, the OpenMic Show. Yeah. Man, you
know you set the stage for whatwe're doing here today. So much love
(36:59):
to you, my friend. Iappreciate. I can't I personally can't take
