Very good afternoon. Rita Grange joined us in a common section.
Sharon m Maria, Paul Mitchell and Carol Fitness. Carol says
in the UK in Brighton, my old hometown. There twenty
seven degrees in Brighton Whale. Take a picture. That's your summer. Yeah,
twenty seven degrees. I think it was went down to
twenty seven degrees here last night. That was a bit
of cold ashit went last night. Still pretty warm and
(06:51):
humid here here in al Maria. More of the same
for the next week or so, probably a couple more
weeks of this, and then it starts to pull down
a little bit. But it's still very nice and pleasant
weather here in al Maria. What's the temperatures like where
you are this weekend? Let's know in the comment section
and come and say hi. Okay, we're we going.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Right David Rye David like David David the Afternoon Show.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
Okay, So coming up on the shower very very shortly.
I've got a special guest. I've got Patrick Creighton here
is a language teacher. I think it speaks seven languages now,
and he's going to give us a little bit of
a Spanish lesson. So if you want to test your Spanish,
stay tuned. He's coming up very very shortly. I saw
a little bit of crazy news on the internet the
other day. I checked it out. It is true. Apparently
(07:40):
if you like a bit of KFC chicken, you do
you like a bit of takeaway chicken, Colonel Sanders Chicken. Well,
they're joined up with a toothpaste company and they're branding
this new toothpaste that tastes like Colonel Sanders Chicken.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
Believe it or not?
Speaker 5 (07:55):
Yeah, did you fancy that Chicken Kentucky fried chicken flavored toothpaste.
I don't know where do they get these ideas? But
would you try that? And maybe it's maybe, well, you
can't swallow it. I suppose they're not supposed to swallow
toothpaste anyway, but they go, let's know what you think
about that one? In the comment section. Yeah, so bit
of rock and roll now and starting off with the
King of rock and roll himself.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
David Wright, help and advice but living and working in Spain.
You're listening to the Right Way with David right.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
The Afternoon Show. You're listening to the Right Way with
me David right here on AMREA Radio one of some
point five FM and Hyer Yannie Johnnys in the comment section,
tray me.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Come on.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
P Chris Lovelace joined us in the comment section and
Maria as well. Yeah, Kate FC toothpaste? Would you believe it?
As I looked it up? A couple of places.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
Is that where?
Speaker 5 (08:52):
And you can you can buy this toothpaste. It tastes
like cornel Sanders, Kentucky fied chicken toothpaste. Well what it
looks like? God? Is it white? Or does it look
like chicken? Or where? There you go? That's a weird one. Okay,
So British expats, sorry, British people resident in Spain, if
you've been here for some time, you've probably got the
paper tie version of the residency card. They used to
(09:13):
be the a four sized green paper one. I did
say a long time ago that you know, I've spoken
to my visa expert here and they're going to be
changing this. It's not actually Laura at the moment, but
lots of border control staff are now checking and they
don't accept that as form of ID when you're coming
into Spain. You know, your passport is okay, that's fine,
but if you want to show that you're resident here
(09:34):
in Spain, they're not accepting that. They're now starting to
transfer over to the TI card that's the resident the
plastic one like the driving lost its one. If you
haven't yet changed your tie card, it's very easy to do,
and I suggest you do it now once it becomes
law here once it becomes obligatory, and it will be
soon then obviously it's going to be a lot more
money to do that. At the moment, it's around twelve
(09:56):
view us to do it. It's something you can do
fairly easily yourself for SPA and it is half decent.
You should be able to do it, or you can
get someone to go with you and do it. It's
not difficult at all, but you should do it. You
should change from the paper one over to the tie
plastic one. If you're here in Spain as a new resident,
you'd probably get that allocated to you as a part
(10:18):
of the course. Anyway. Now they don't issue out the
old paper on anymore, but some people still got the
old one. Now it is still legal to use that
here as a form of ID, but remember it must
be carried with your passport on your person at all times.
That is a law in Spain. That is, if you're
here as a resident in Spain, your form of ID
is that piece of paper and your passport. Now it's
(10:39):
not practical to go to the beach with your passport
and all the time, or the shops and that piece
of paper as well. And they don't like you to
fold it, so it's pretty ridiculous really. So years ago
when I had mine, I got it plastic caterd whatever
you like to call it into a force into a
credit card size. That was except a boys to get
stopped by the place quite a bit, and that was okay.
But now the tie, the plastic one, that is really
(11:01):
the form of ID and you don't need your passport
with that that you can travel all over the place
as well. I'm not sure how legal it is actually
to go abroad on that. I know the Spanish too,
my Spanish wife uses hers to travel around and instead
of the passport. But yeah, I've used it many many
times here and including at the notree to sign legal
documents by in selling property, you can use the plastic
(11:24):
ti E card instead of your passport. Is as valuable,
if not more so if you're resident in Spain. So
if you haven't yet changed to the new plastic tie card,
please go and get it done, get it sort out,
and if you need more help in the information about that,
there's loads of including experts that can help with that
over on my information page that's David Right online dot
(11:45):
com information page now and we will rock you good
afternoon of Paul Mitchell join us in the concert. Yeah, Paul,
I know it's difficult in some areas to get these appointments.
There is a bit of a backlog with these appointments.
And remember it's coming up to Hoole the period now,
so in the next few weeks or even now, things
are starting to do drop off a lot. These offices
(12:05):
will be closed and some of them for a month,
so there's going to be a big backlock at the moment.
There are some ways around this though, and I was
in the British Consulate's office today talking to him about
bits and pieces. You can see the interviews with him
over on my website. There are some ways around this
as well. So I've got some ideas that you might
be able to get quicker appointments over on my website.
(12:27):
If you're interested in that, come check it out a
bit later on this afternoon. And I've got some more
information about the Cuds again over on my website. Okay,
so I got special guest on the line today. We've
got Patrick Creighton and Patrick is a language expert. Patrick, Hi,
and welcome to the show.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
Hi, David. Great to be back with you.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Patrick, tell me how many languages that you speak now?
Speaker 4 (12:52):
Are humbly six?
Speaker 1 (12:55):
I speak six very in level fluently fluently, five including English,
so English service is my language, Spanish, French, Italian, and
I'm learning.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
Malay as well. So getting there. But yeah, to do
a lot of progress to meet with Yeah, you.
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Don't don't speak Mandarin, Chinese being in chance they.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
No, I don't you know, No, I'm Malay's the only
Asian language I've been brave.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
Enough to tackle.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
To be honest with you, it's just something something, a
bit of a hobby. And when I started to learn
that a few months ago, and it's crazy, but yeah,
friends of mine said, what are you learning that for?
Is it's the most spoken language in the world apparently,
So there you go. But Patrick was talking about Spanish earlier,
and you know, living here in Spain, you don't need
(13:41):
Most British people live here, they don't need to speak Spanish.
But there can be missing out so much, you know,
on on just the general life here in Spain, and
some things are a lot cheaper for people that you know,
even try and speak in the language a little bit,
you can get some things a bit cheaper here get
discounts off if you try a little bit of Spanish
and you know, a bit friendly with local. So you know,
(14:01):
we're saying about different phrases, isn't it so? Got any
tips for us that people could use a couple of
phrases that might get and buy things that we might
need to know here in Spain. What sort of phrases
would do you think is appropriate?
Speaker 4 (14:14):
I listened.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
There are an infinite amount of phrases and expressions like
I could share with you what I like to do
with my client, even though they're basic, basic level, learning
from nothing from scratch, right from quite early on. It's
a good idea to learn a little bit of slang.
You learn from you connect with the locals so much faster.
(14:35):
You'll see them crack up. You'll see them like break
a little smile if you with the giddy that's what
they call the English folk and basically white tourists.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
Mainly, isn't it gidd the English? If you can use
that word giddy, I found when I was.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Living in Spain that was a fantastic icebreaker.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
Definitely actually actually funny you say that. I think I've
mentioned it on my show before years ago, when I
was learning Spanish. I went to a builder's merchants to
buy some wood and they were a real in the
middle of nowhere. Builders merchants didn't speak any English at all,
and you know, I was trying to speak to him,
and he just didn't want to know. I went back
to my Spanish teacher and I said, listen, I need
an icebreaker, and he thought he meant like an ice
(15:18):
pick or something. He didn't understand the word. And I
explained to him what an icebreaker was, and he gave
me this sentence saw he gidyami so, which basically means
I'm an English tourist, I'm not stupid. Can you help me?
Speaker 4 (15:32):
You know?
Speaker 5 (15:32):
And as like you say. When I told it to
the guy, he just laughed a bit of a smile
and what do you want sort of thing? You know,
So that these icebreakers really do work. And the slang,
you know, if you're living here in Spain, you do
pick up the bad words and the slang words first.
But that does help a lot, doesn't it.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
Phenomenally? Especially in Spain.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
They use a lot of which is the word for
squear words, because a lot of I love it. Number
one tip is that so basically to summarize that, it's
all about being vulnerable, David.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
If you can get vulnerable, yeah, people can really print it.
Just be open and honest.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Go hey, listen, this isn't my language. I'm not from here,
but I do love this country. I love probably the
weather of the food. And to show them that you
actually care about their culture as well, and that will
get you so far.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
People really take to that. You can imagine yourself talking
to an immigrant.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
If you're living in England and there's an immigrant here
and he's speaking it makes a hell of a different
to me. When I have someone come to me in there,
they tell me they want to learn English, not just
to learn the language and get mine, but actually because they.
Speaker 4 (16:36):
Love the culture.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
And by learning some slang, you're showing that you care
about the culture, and you'll see people change. The energy
will complete with people, and you'll make friends a lot,
quicker connections, and that's what you need.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
They we just need one in with people. Yeah, and
then you're on a roll.
Speaker 5 (16:56):
Well. One of the things that I'm using a lot
at the moment, and a lot of I hear it
a lot as well as and it's quite a doubt
for the temperature in the moment, it means sweating like
a chicken. When I talk more Spanish, was I said,
sweating like a chicken. Chickens don't sweat. It should be
sweating like a pig. No, no, no, she said, it's
sweating like a chicken. But there you go. I don't
(17:18):
think I've ever seen a chicken sweat, but maybe here
in Spain it's a bit of a different one. But
that's used quite a lot of the moment, don't you think,
Yeah I should.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
Yeah, on the term of only a seam of poetry,
I don't know if you've had.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
Before.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Yeah, I mean the little transation is turkey, right, is
a turkey?
Speaker 4 (17:40):
But they use it in Spain to refer to a euro, so.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
Instead of sayings too euros, they'll say two turkey. Yeah. So,
even if a basic level you don't know much Spanish
at all, if you use expressions like that, you'll get
such a different reaction from people instead of saying and
they'll crack up, look at this gear, you know, using
a bit of flag.
Speaker 5 (18:03):
Yeah, or pay when you go to play and say
paying Metallica. Paying Metallica basically means are paying metal, which
translates me as you're paying cash paying Metallica. Okay, we'll
we're back with Patrick of a few more tips after this. Okay,
(18:23):
so we're back on the in the studio with Patrick
Crichton from laid Back Languages. Patrick, we're talking about languages
here in Spain. Learning Spanish now, you know, it's all
about having a bit of confidence, real in it, going
out and trying it and not being feeling stupid or anything.
And although I've never felt that way, I've never had
anybody ridicule me or or down crime at all for
(18:46):
trying and facts the opposite. They help you and encourage you, don't.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
They They do for sort in Spain that the Spain
is lover. They love for tryer, especially when you can
get to a level which your Spanish is better than
their basic English.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
And yeah, it's nobles really, it really does. Like if
you can just get over the initial hump of a.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Like an intermediate level, if you can get there or
even upper basic level, you'll fly with Spanish because the
Spaniards really really help you. And I find yeah, with
my clients, with the guys that come to me, the
number one problem they have is actually the mental programming
they've received from school. I'm a qualified psychotherapist as well.
(19:31):
So what I do is I help people reprogram a
subconscious mind for them to actually believe they can learn
a foreign language, because at least, like I'm too old
a learning language.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
I was so bad at school and so I won't
be able to learn now.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
I mean, David, to give you an idea, Man, I
failed French GCS, not GCC at a level. I studied
it at a level and I got a like failed.
I want to e so and I think it fluently.
So if you were bad at school, if you were
bad at school, don't think that that's the end for you,
Like everyone was bad at school because the method is
(20:08):
completely wrong and backwards.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Like, give you.
Speaker 1 (20:12):
A couple of chances to learn a language properly and
the confidence will will come with it.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
But yeah, confidence is a big thing. But Spanish, the Spanish.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
A great man.
Speaker 4 (20:22):
The Spanish.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
I love it when when a Gidda speaks to them
and the linger they yeah, they love it.
Speaker 5 (20:28):
Yeah, Yeah, I think you're right. The schools, I mean,
you know, the education system in the UK, as far
as language goes, was a complete waste of time for me.
I learned French for a few years and failed all
the exams. At the end of the school, I didn't
have a clue what they're talking about. It wasn't until
I started going to France regularly with my parents when
(20:49):
I was a little bit older that I started to
pick it up and learn. And that is the best way,
you know, jump straight in it and just practice it regularly.
But Patrick, you give my listeners a free trial lesson
leave over in the website? Is that correct?
Speaker 6 (21:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Sure, yeah, as long as you just say where you've
come from, Say you've come from Davidwright dot com and yeah,
I'll give you a free twenty minute trial lesson completely free.
You can see the differences between how I teach languages,
which is a proper way, yeah, and the difference between
school and then if you like it, try more lessons.
But yeah, so just for the minimail laid back languages, yeah,
(21:25):
visitly back languages dot com. You've messaged me through there,
or equally so minimail live back languages at gmail dot com.
Speaker 5 (21:34):
Brand.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
Yeah, were than happy to help people learn languages the
proper way.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
Man.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
I love it, absolutely love it.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
Yeah, it will it will help you out save you
a little bit of stress, time and money for sure.
So that's Patrick from Laidback Languages and more details over
on my website. You can find out all the information
about Patrick over on my information page. That's Davidwright online
dot com. Thanks very much Patrick for join us today
and have a great weekend, mate.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
Yeah, likewise they've a god bless all the.
Speaker 5 (22:02):
Cheers, mate, Bye. Is he top there?
Speaker 3 (22:06):
And legs David Wright help and advice for living and
working in Spain. You're listening to the right way right
with David right.
Speaker 5 (22:19):
Now with this hot weather, probably drinking a lot and
probably drinking alcohol a lot, I know, I am. Yeah.
Up in Benidorm, they've got the cheapest point in Spain
at the moment, fifty cents a pint. Fifty cents a
pint of beer up in a bar in Benador there
and qu'es around the block for this. They've teamed up
with a brewery. This is a new bar up in
(22:41):
Benidorm and they've been advertising this for a while and
they've got queues all around the block to get this
fifty per point. And apparently it's a good quality beer
as well. So there you go, fifty per point up
there in Benadorm, if you're heading up there this week
and get in that que get something and another drink
that I like here at the moment went it's very hot.
Is Tintoverano I don't know if you tried that here,
Very popular with the locals. It's a tall, long, thin
(23:04):
glass filled up with lemonade and red wine and ice
on a slice. Tint over Run. If you haven't tried
it yet, try that tint over Run at your local
here in Spain.
Speaker 6 (23:16):
You're listening to the Right Way with David Wright in
the afternoon on al Maria Radio one seven point five FMS.
The comment section is open, so come say hi to
David right now.
Speaker 5 (23:33):
Okay, So there's some new links on the UK Gov
websites where you can check out your pension. So if
you're living in Spain and you're not yet at pensionable age,
you know you're over here waiting for your pension to
come through. You can check it now online. It just
asks you for putting in some detaots this your passport
photo ID, things like that. You can do it quite
(23:53):
quickly on the PC or on a mobile with the app.
I did it this afternoon. Download it or was straightforward,
and it can calculate exactly how much you've got in
your pot, your pension pot when you can actually draw
on it, and what you're going to be drawing each week,
each month, and what's what yearly you can have from
(24:13):
that money. You can also take it out as a
lump sum. You can take out all the money as
one lump sum as well. So this is quite interesting.
I'm going to put some details to this over on
my website on the information page a bit later on
the soft and I'm in the middle of doing it
at the moment. But so, yeah, I calculated my pension
what's worth and I can take mine in two thousand
and twenty nine. I believe in twenty twenty eight is
(24:36):
going to go up, but they putting it up to
sixty seven or is it the year before they're up
to the age of sixty seven. They're talking about that
retirement age in the UK. But there you go. So
you can go over to the government website now you
can check it, download the app and you can check
exactly how much you're going to get from your pension
if you haven't yet drawn your pension. Here in Spain, well,
(24:56):
That's just about it for me for another show. Thanks
very much everybody for joining meet in the comments section.
I appreciate it, and I'm going to leave you now
with one of my favorite ones. Check out the information
over on my information page on my brand new website,
David wrightonline dot com. Loads of information videos there, expert
help that could give you free advice to my listeners
(25:18):
