(00:29):
Hello, everyone, Welcome to episodetwenty six of the Holistic Living Podcast.
Today we are talking about herpes simplexvirus. I'm going to share some information
on it and some things that youcan do nutritionally and supplementally in order to
help combat it, reduce flare ups, all that good stuff. I have

(00:50):
gotten so many requests for this topic, and one of the first things I
want to say about herpes is thatmore people have it than you realize because
it is so highly contagious and soI know, I've had a few people
who are like super embarrassed. They'relike, I'm so embarrassed to tell you
this, but I have herpies.I'm wondering if you can help me,

(01:11):
you know, beat it and allthat. And I was like, you
know what, so many more peoplehave it than you realize. Don't be
embarrassed. It's super contagious and that'swhat we're going into today. But I
just wanted to share that because Iknow a lot of people think that they're
like the only ones with it,but that's definitely not the case. And
I find that this time of yearis when a lot of people have like
cold sore flare ups and herpes flareups in general, and I think a

(01:33):
lot of it has to do withthe high stress that people are under in
the back to school season, inlike getting back into the fall, getting
off of summer vacation, which isusually enjoyment and relaxation. So typically this
time of year, we're also goingto be eating a lot more carby kind
of food, and we're going tohave, like I said, higher stress

(01:55):
levels, less sleep. All ofthat's going to definitely impact our immune system
and have and allow this virus toflare. So let's just jump into it.
Herpies simplex viruses, so there's differentkinds. Are human DNA viruses that
cause repeated painful vesticular eruptions on theskin, typically on the oor, farings

(02:16):
and genitals. Now cold stores arecaused by HSV one, so that herpie
simplex virus one, whereas genital herpesare caused more often by HSV two.
So just a little bit about theetiology of the herpes virus. It's highly
contagious, like I said, andit's contracted by either direct contact with an

(02:38):
active lesion. It also HSB twospecifically can be transmitted to a newborn during
passage through the birth canal of aninfected mother, so children can also get
infected from the parent again during thatbirthing process, So there's a few ways
to contract. But like I said, it is very, very highly contagious,
which is why it's so widespread now. The herpe simple virus one creates

(03:00):
multiple small blisters on the lips andafter the initial attack, the virus usually
remains dormant in the nerve ganglion andit often recurs during an acute illness or
in response to heat and stress. So, like I mentioned, you know
during this time of year, orstressful times of year in general, that's
typically when you'll see flare ups.And it's because when we're stressed out,

(03:22):
our immune system actually becomes suppressed orweakened, and it's a perfect time for
viruses to kind of come out inplay and cost some issues for a while.
But also with HSB, specifically, excess heat can cause flare ups and
also an acute illness. So ifyou got a cold or a flu,
something else that's occupying your immune system, then this virus might come out to

(03:43):
play knowing that there's no immune systemto kind of combat it. So with
herpes, but also other viruses ingeneral, something we really want to think
about is that immune modulation. Wehave components of our immune system designed to
scan our body for viruses and pathogensand cancer cells as well, but specifically

(04:04):
viruses. It's called our THH oneimmunity. It's that part of the immune
system that is going through the bodylooking for things that don't belong and neutralizing
them, killing them off, andeliminating them. And when we are chronically
stressed, or when we have elevatedpathogen burdens, or if we're eating a
lot of junk food and sugar andalcohol, or if we're not sleeping while

(04:27):
or if we're taking like chronic steroids, whether it's like topical or injected things
like that, we are going toweaken that side of the immune system and
we start to lose that pathogen andcancer surveillance. I've talked about this extensively,
not just through podcast episodes, butYouTube videos social media. The immune
system is crucial for every part ofour body, but especially in regards to

(04:50):
viruses, and so if we losesome of that THH one immune status,
we're not going to be able tomount attack against viruses in the body,
and that's how they can come inand take hold in our system. So
all the information I'm sharing with you, I do want you to always keep
in mind that the purpose a lotof it is to support the immune system
and to boost that thh one sideof the immune system, which can potentially

(05:14):
help us combating different viruses in thebody. The other thing is, please
always check with your doctor or practitionerbefore supplementing and taking any remedies, even
if they're natural, because they mightnot be right for you and your situation.
So always run it by your doctoror practitioner. But I will be
going over some supplements and lifestyle suggestionsand things shortly. Another thing I want

(05:35):
to say is that when we aregoing through times of not just stress,
but poor sleep, but also timesof sugar consumption, that's really when our
immune system can get tanked and viruseslike HSB, shingles, anything really can
come out and activate. And inthe case of herpes, because it is

(05:59):
so highly contagious, it's not somethingthat we just want to worry about for
ourselves, but for those around us, our loved ones, friends, you
know, even strangers. We wantto be really careful with transmitting that to
someone else. But really, whenwe're looking at how our body's functioning,
we don't want to just say I'mgoing to be really clean and I'm going
to be constantly washing my hands anddoing all these things. We want to

(06:21):
say, what can we do forour body to reduce our outbreak, which
can therefore help others too and helpourselves. Of course, a big part
of supporting our immune system is reallynot just making sure we're getting that good
quality sleep, but honestly, guys, sugar here is the most important.
When we consume sugar, our immunesystem is suppressed for seven days. So

(06:43):
imagine if I don't know everyone hasa different kind of diet, but imagine
if you're like the average person that'shaving a good amount of sugar daily,
either through sodas, juices, muffins, bagels, cookies, chips, chocolate,
whatever it might be. Every singleday you're suppressing your immune system.
Your body is never going to beable to fight something off and to get

(07:04):
something to go into dormancy or tobe eradicated completely if there is that continual
sugar consumption. So you can doall the things that I'm recommending, you
know, taking certain supplements and gettinggood sleep and managing stress, but if
you are still consuming sugar or foodsthat are really carbie like chips, it's
still going to keep you flared up. So, without further ado, what

(07:27):
can we do for herpes? Whatare the recommendations. Well, let's start
with diet. The go to forme with my clients is I tell them
right off the bat, you gotto cut out coffee, tea, really
caffeine in general. So even likeenergy drinks and stimulants and carbonated beverages and
juice, you also need to avoidsugar and alcohol as well, even artificial
sweeteners. So like diet sodas, those count you want to avoid all of

(07:51):
that. The reason is because theseare immune suppressant. They are inflammatory.
They are going to create an internalenvironment that is acidic, which is great
for viruses to thrive in and againbecause they're amminosuppressant, they are going to
inhibit our immune system's abilities as scanningour body for viruses and things like that
and neutralizing them. So those areimportant to completely avoid. But you also

(08:16):
want to decrease refined in simple carbs. These are again your pasta, your
chips, your white bread, andthings like that, because this is pure
sugar when it breaks down, it'spure starch. There's no fiber in these
foods, and so they're going tospike your insulin, they're going to spike
your blood sugar. They're going toweaken the immune system as a result of
that, and again allow these virusesto kind of stay activated. You want

(08:39):
to avoid foods that you're sensitive tooas well. So if you know you
have food sensitivity, say to dairyand gluten like, just cut them out,
even if it's not for the restof your life, for a good
period of time, get your immunesystem to strengthen, get your body's inflammation
levels to come down before reintroducing them. You also want to avoid foods that
are high in urginine, like chocolate, nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds,

(09:01):
beer meat in general, gelatin andsoy arginine suppresses lysine, which is the
amino acid that retards Herpes's viral growth. Lycine is found in eggs, fish,
dairy products, yeast, poultry, and meat. Now, I do
want to put a disclaimer here. This doesn't mean to not consume meat,
Okay. This is mainly just focusingon not consuming a ton of foods within

(09:24):
the same day that are high inrginine. I am a big promoter of
consuming good grass bet organic meat becauseI'm a promoter of lowering carbs. So
if you're cutting out meat and carbs, there's nothing left to eat. So
enjoy the meat, but just trynot to fill up your day with chocolate
and meat and then have some beerand then have all the other stuff as
well. Okay, so what dowe do in terms of increasing Well,

(09:46):
you want to make sure you're gettinggood enough complete protein, including some from
vegetable sources. But usually I telleveryone one gram of protein for a pounds
of body weight. If you liftreally heavy, you exercise extent simply,
and if you're male, you wantto probably do one zero point five grams
per pound of body weight. Soif you weigh one hundred and twenty pounds

(10:09):
for average female you would consume aboutone hundred and twenty grams of protein if
you weigh one hundred and sixty pounds. For the average male, you would
consume anywhere between one hundred and sixtyand one hundred and ninety grams of protein
per day. Make sure you're gettingprotein, as the entire immune system and
our entire body is made up ofprotein or seals sorry, are made up

(10:31):
of amino acids, which we needthe protein to replenish. You want to
also drink a lot of water, really make water your main beverage source,
and really cut back on the sugar's, alcohols, all the other stuff.
Increase your fiber intake two guys,So this means your soluble fiber like flax
and chia and hemp hearts, butalso vegetable fiber as well. You want
to avoid any inflammatory oils, sothose trans and hydrogenated fats, the canola

(10:56):
oils and the margarine, those kindsof things. You want to eat a
very alkaline diet. I mentioned thatlike carbonated beverages and sugar acidify the body.
We want to consume alkaline foods whichare going to change the internal pH
to help be in favor of immunecell production and for good probiotics to thrive,
for proper liver and kidney function, etc. So lots of dark greens,

(11:18):
perciferous vegetables, things like that. You want to specifically increase your dark
leafy greens and other chlorophyl rich foods. Is these are going to help really,
really really boost the immune support thatyou already have. So greens,
dark leafy greens contain B vitamins andso many other vitamins and minerals that we

(11:39):
need for immune support. And theyalso alkalize the body as well, so
super important there. Lastly, youwant to increase the consumption of foods with
a high lycine to arginine ratio, which so foods that are high in lysine
and relatively low in urginine, whichis mainly many types of fish. So
get good wildcought fish in and thosewill give you these high lyicene, low

(12:01):
arginine foods that are also high inproteins. You're still hitting your protein goals.
So what can we do in termsof supplements, Well, there's a
lot. I could literally go onfor days talking about the different ways we
can support the immune system and targetviruses. My go to is homeopathics.
I make beautiful homeopathic protocols that goto the cellular level to target viruses and

(12:24):
things like that, but they arevery very specific, I should say.
The thing about homeopathy. The beautifulthing is that the remedies are extremely specific
and tailored and chosen for the uniqueindividual's unique set of symptoms. And so
they're not something that I can justshare across the board here because they would
change dramatically from one person to thenext. But some basic supplemental recommendations I

(12:48):
can give you, first and foremostprobiotics. Typically, if somebody's having some
kind of viral burden in the system, it's indicative that there is not enough
probiotics in the gut, which istypically how things start and how a weakened
immunity starts as well. So boostyour probiotics. Take lots of them supplement
for like a full year, justdaily or every other day. Get a

(13:09):
good amount in at least fifty billiona day if possible, and this can
really help to strengthen our gut.And remember eight seventy to eighty percent of
our immune system is in our gut, so we want a good, healthy,
functioning colon. You can also takelysine. So lyceine, like we
said, can really help to inhibitthe growth of the viral growth of herpes.

(13:31):
So you can consume lysine and supplementform, or you could just eat
lyceine rich foods. But typically ifsomebody who's flaring quite frequently might need to
supplement, calcium could help as well. Now I'm not a huge fan of
actually supplementing with calcium. I usuallyfind that most people today don't need calcium,
but in fact need a lot ofmagnesium, and calcium can actually form
growths in the body because of ourlack of magnesium. So with that being

(13:54):
said, if you are to takecalcium, definitely please take magnesium glycinate along
se but calcium could help as well. In the book Balancing Body Chemistry with
Nutrition by doctor Robert Pieshek, hewrites that legends appear when calcium levels are
low in the blood due to thelow transport of calcium bicarbonate from the small
intestine into the blood. Calcium canalso decrease acidity in the body, So

(14:18):
if you are to take calcium, take an absorbable form, but also at
the same time, please take magnesiumand remember that if you're not having absorption
from the gut into the blood stream. It's not a calcium deficiency, it's
poor calcium absorption. So that meansyou need to increase stomach acid levels.
Maybe you have an underactive stomach andyou want to make sure that if you

(14:39):
are to be eating foods that arecalcium rich, that you're consuming them with
some sour things some lemon or applecid or vinegar, and also make sure
you're consuming them with some protein forcomplete absorption into the blood stream. You
could also do a tea spoon ofsodium by carbonate in a glass of water
and just do it like daily orevery day during an outbreak, which could

(15:01):
help. They'll be careful with thisbecause if you have any kidney issues,
it's not something you want to do. And then also zinc zinc helps prevent
eruptions. I like zinc picholinate. You can apply zinc topically too, like
directly to the legends, and youcan also take it orally, So if
you feel that you want to doboth, it could actually be very beneficial
to help heal the legends quicker andhelp to fight the virus quicker internally.

(15:24):
Now, vitamins A and C withbioflabonoids help in the recovery of epithelia from
all infections, not just herpe,so that's always a good idea to take
vitamins A and C strengthen those epitheliallinings. Vitamin E can decrease pain,
so vitamin E and Lactobacillus acidophilus arealso effective for mouth infections in general,

(15:46):
but also herpies, So if youhave some pain, you want to take
them together. It can help withany infections in the mouth and also in
terms of like the herpes infection aswell. Now you want to look at
your thimis. Typically the thymus glandis a big part. It's where our
immune cells are made. So thymusextracts like some kind of organotherapy or glandular

(16:07):
can help strengthen the cell mediated immuneresponse, boost that immune system again have
healthy T cell production, specifically forthe th one immune system. Now,
fish oil and other essential fatty acidscan be really helpful too. I recommend
doing if you're going to do afish oil to do it with glutathione if
you have any kind of chronic inflammation, as it will go rancid in the

(16:30):
body. Potentially if you don't haveenough glutathione status to help protect the fats
and prevent them from going rancid andbecoming inflammatory. So I talked about this
in a whole other podcast as well. It would definitely have a listen to
it. I talked about standard proresolving mediators, So listen to that podcast
episode if you want to know moreabout the fish oil and the glutathione concept.

(16:51):
But fish oil can be really helpfulfor our immune system, as our
immune system needs lots of EPA andDHA to function. Plant sterols can be
great for the immune so as well. They also help with cholesterol and so
many other things. But whenever anybodyhas any kind of inflammation, chronic viral
burden, anything like that, itneeds immune support. I always like to
get them on plant sterols. Genestrahas a great supplement called coal steril col

(17:15):
steril. It's a beautiful supplement, not sponsored. I just love using that
with my clients, but again, always check with your adoctive before supplementing with
anything. We're almost to the endof the supplement side of things, so
corsitin is great. Nacetyl cystine alsohas phenomenal antiviral properties. I would say
it's in almost every protocol I woulddo. There's some situations where the someone

(17:37):
shouldn't take nacetyl cysteine, especially ifyou have any kind of fibrosis or fibrotic
type of condition, don't take aknack, But most people it work so
well and it's such a potent antiviraland can definitely give great benefits. Then
we have selenium, which I lovehonestly for like adrenal and thyroid support,
but it's in a fantastic immune remedyas well because selenium helps to strengthen our

(18:00):
immune system. A couple other thingswould be some immune builders. So this
is where we take things to directlyboost the thh one side of the immune
system, things like barberine and glutithioneselforaphane ginger, those can be fantastic to
take in combination or on their ownto boost the immune system. And then

(18:21):
finally things like chaga medicinal mushroom, cordyceps raychie Lion's made medicinal mushrooms have potent
antiviral properties but also potent immune buildingproperties. So some other lifestyle factors that
we can do is just make surethat we're supporting our immune system by getting
ample, regular, good quality sleep. So go to bed at the right

(18:45):
time. Don't go to bed atone in the morning, go to bed
around ten thirty, get a goodseven to eight hours of sleep, have
good sleep hygiene. I go intoextensive information on how to have good proper
deep quality, good quality and sorrydeep sleep on my website. But also
maintain consistent frequent exercise. Move yourbody, don't get sluggish. Don't just
sit around all day. That's definitelygoing to tank your immune system. In

(19:07):
order to have strong vitality, whichmeans a strong immune system, we need
to have flow. We need ourbody needs to be in movement, in
motion, so definitely move the body. You also want to reduce stress and
practice stress management techniques. That's yourdeep breathing, utilizing aromatherapy, cutting any
stress from your life that's not needed, taking adaptagens, getting good sleep,

(19:29):
all that good stuff. Also,Transcutaneous vague nerve stimulation has shown incredible effects
for COVID, for inhibiting COVID virusand overall boosting the immune system. So
I think it's a great idea foranyone who has any chronic viruses to try
transcutaneous vagel nerve stimulation, which I'vealso gone into extensive detail on through all
my socials, but this is somethingthat can really help to boost your immune

(19:52):
system. You can also apply inice cube, some irregular oil, vitamin
E or even lyceene ointment topically tothe newly erupting legend which or lesion which
may halt the outbreak, and thenget lots of goods. Safe exposure to
sunlight and avoid exposure to cigarette smokeand other pollutants that are going to tank

(20:12):
your immune system. A couple botanicalsto consider would be raspberry and licorice routine.
These are great for targeting herpes. The only thing is they are more
hormonal remedies, So for any ofthe guys out there, just be careful
taking raspberry and liquorice routine long termif you're doing it acutely, should not

(20:33):
be a problem at all. Sothose are my tips and suggestions for the
herpes virus. Again, there's somebeautiful anti viral homeopathics that you could look
into and get on a protocol forworking at the cellular level, But just
to start off, those are somegood things to work towards just really clearing
out and cleaning out the diet, focusing on getting good nutrition, good amount

(20:55):
of water, good sleep, stressreduction. Take some of those supplements for
the immune system that I mentioned, and you should already have great improvement with
your immune system and therefore the herpesvirus. So I hope that this helps.
If you have any questions, youcan always let me know and contact
me through my social I hope youguys have a beautiful day or night wherever
you are listening from, and Iwill talk to you in the next episode. Bye.
