Muckle Suh. It doesn't matter ifyou love craps, blackjack machines or dining
on the finest Asian, American andSailish cuisines. It doesn't matter what you
do or where you're coming from.Muckle su what you do is all at
Muckleshoe, an easy drive from whereveryou are. All roads lead to Muckleshoe

(00:28):
Mucosus, and it's Whiskey Harbor ishomeward bound, has a lead by about

(00:53):
three and a half four lengths.Bourbon dancers up in the second, Muki
up the inside third, and thenit's freight lined four sixteenth ago. It's
all Whiskey Harbor. Whiskey Harbor tookthe lead out the starting gate. It
went all the way on the frontend and the King County Express Stakes horse
racing northwest from Emerald Downs. Thanksfor joining us. We missed a week,
but we are back and we arejust a little more than a week

(01:17):
away from the eighty eighth long acresmile Here at Emerald Downs, Joe withy
Vince Brune and build downs and fellas. We just heard Whiskey Harbor, that
son of rise up the new Stallionin Oregon Whiskey Harbors made his name.
He's already a stakes winner. Demeralddowns two for two and sure, I'm
sure he's Morning Line favorite coming up. He sure is in Sunday's Wtboa lad

(01:42):
Stakes, but it is two yearolds going six and a half furlong.
See a little more of a testfor them in freight line a horse here,
part owner of Joe comes off runnerup finish to Whiskey Harbor and then
came back in one maiden special weightand if you believe in buyers, his
buyers actually higher than Whiskey these HarborStakes win fifty three. But yeah,
Whiskey Harbor made no mistakes, hasa lot of speed and looked like he

(02:05):
could have kept going the last time. Deserved favorite. And then we've got
the WTVOA Lassie Stakes for two yearold Phillies and appear you almost say the
barber should pole. I almost did. We switched it back this year.
It began in eighty two as thelads in the Lassies, but appeal factor
just me and Bill rewatching that replace. She took a real big bump shortly

(02:27):
out of the gate, knocked sidewaysand still won that race pretty easily.
And she looks like a real prospectthere. Of course she's out of Caerula
and by the Factor, those horsesexcel everywhere and at Emerald Downs two and
she'll be pretty pretty tough to beat, I think in that Lassie Steaks.
Yeah, if you're handicap in thatrace, go watch the head on of

(02:50):
the ANGC. It's about eight stridesafter the break. Appeal Factor got brushed
at the break, but eight stridesafter the break just knocked sideways if you
will, could have very easily justlost her air, lost her action,
but she overcame it in her debutto defeat a stakes field in the ANGC.
And I don't see how Appeal Factorloses in a spot looking at the

(03:15):
pps and going six and a halffurlong, So it's you get a little
bit more time up the backstretch tomaneuver and Appeal Factor will be I think
a deserving favorite in the Lassies.Yeah, she was super impressive, daughter
of the Factor and Carula. Wedo have five horses that have broke their
maidens. That's pretty good at thistime of the year at Emerald Downs that

(03:37):
are in that wtboa Lassies, wegot a ton to talk about today.
On horse Racing Northwest again. We'rejust a little more than a week away
from the eighty eighth Long Acres Milesome mile talk. We might talk about
the mile with one of our guests, Gary Bays, the States all time
leading jockey long Acres all time leadingjockey and the most wins in Long Acres

(04:00):
history. Five. Gary's coming backon Sunday for turn Back the Clock Day
at Emerald Downs. It'll be greatto have Gary Bays around. He's going
to join us on today's podcast,as is Dean Mazuka, who called the
Corgi races for our show that ison tomorrow night on ESPN two. Yeah,
Emerald Downs has a half hour showon ESPN two tomorrow night at nine

(04:24):
pm. It's the Corgi Special fortwo twenty three, and we'll give Dean
his full introduction. Vince, butyou know, he does a lot of
stuff. He's a track announcer inOregon. He's a horse owner. He
hostshire, he hosts Breakfast at theWire which is coming up Sunday, and

(04:45):
him and his pals have a goodthing going up there in the North Park
with their little cigar area there. They have a great time and you know,
in the last he Stakes. He'spart owner of Mocktail, as anyone
who's a strong second choice in thatrace is coming off a good second.
So that horse hasn't done much wrongand it's got a good trainer, yeah
in Frank Lucarelli calling the shots there. So yeah, he's he's got a

(05:09):
chance in the stakes race this weekendtoo, Okay, So Gary Bays Dean
Mazuoka joining us. Bill Downs isgoing to be on QUTE thirteen Sports Sunday
Night. He's going to preview theLong Acres Mile for all of Seattle.
That's a pretty good show. Bill, And you've been around a couple of
years now. Aaron Levine's been sportsdirector at QUTE thirteen for quite a few
years. They really treat us wellhere at Emerald Downs. I think a

(05:31):
list of Charleston is going to beyour host on Sunday night, Beautiful,
Can't Wait, Break It Down,Sloose Tis, whiz Zes, Full Dirt
Road Red, among others. We'llsee who shows up in the nominations list
at closes on Sunday. Corrects, that's right, Vince, Yeah, nominations
closed for the mile. They usedto close in two weeks now we have

(05:55):
closed a week out. Yeah.So for years and years it was two
weeks for noms and then the weightswere really least the following Sunday, which
was a week out. Yeah, and then we'll have the draw breakfast Wednesday.
Yep. Then draw breakfast coming upon Wednesday at Emerald Downs for the
eighty eighth mile. No weights neededanymore because it's an allowance stake now,
so the conditions weights are depended onmoney earned and sluiced. His Whiz can

(06:20):
get in if he wants. He'sdefending champ and coming off a huge win
in the Governors. So yeah, the rest of the nominees, we know,
five star generals coming in from theMidwest. He's looking for his fourth
straight mile start. He's been inthe money all three previous he's a good
horse, really good horse, andhe's probably better than he's ever been in

(06:42):
his life right now, making thiskind of the little North American Tour with
Grant Forster for ken L. Haddiff. And yeah, he had some intrigue
to the race. So Dan Markleclaimed a horse for an owner named Craig
Perrenboom at Sacramento last week. Thehorse cell was it a mile and think
got a ninety one buyer warning amile race on dirt. They paid forty

(07:04):
four it and could be an immediatefactor too. Yeah, five star general.
When we last saw him, hewas more of a closer. Now
he's he's a he's a speed horse. Yeah, and he's been running his
best races. I think in hiscareer a couple of them. The race
down at Evangeline Ay one minor stakesand then the race that he even though

(07:25):
he didn't win at Indiana, theSchaeffer. Yeah, the Schaeffer. He
set the tempo and h and finisheda really good second against a really strong
field. And in that race,I think he had Derby undercard. I
think the race after the mile lastyear, that race complicate one at a
mile and seventy yards, was kindof when the style began to change.
He was an unlucky loser that day. He ran great on the front end

(07:47):
and it was he had run fine, you know, coming off the pace.
But he's he's a real tiger sincehe's been on the front end he
has. Indeed, he's owned byKen l Hattaf who purchased him out of
the Glen Odd dispersal in early twentytwenty two. Grant Forrester has him and
Bill, I know you know thename Grant Forrester. He did really well

(08:09):
around here in limited seasons, theson of Day Forrester, Hall of Fame
BC trainer and Grant had one memorableweekend in two thousand and five, winning
the mile for Herman Sarkowski at sixtyto one, and I think he won
the Oaks the day before with classincluded his mother, her mother, her

(08:33):
mother won the race and so anyway, it'll be good to see Grant back.
A Classic Life was her name,A Classic Life by Sky Classic.
Okay, So we have those twofellas to talk about and talk with Gary
Bays and Dean Mazuka. Our Fridayschedule is first race seven pm Saturday,

(08:54):
at five pm Sunday at two pmStakes doubleheader Sunday. Hey, where are
your seventies garb on Sunday. Butyou know, all weekend long we're going
to be talking Long Acres nineteen seventiesstuff. We have lots of interviews,
pictures, videos coming on the bigscreen, and live interviews from the paddock.
So many horse people stay in thegame, which is great, and

(09:16):
they have memories and Vince even youyou go back to the seventies for your
starts and thirdbred racing. Oh yeah, it was regular back then. Saw
a lot of great races for sure. Yeah, and so we will recap
that. That'll be fun. Andif you want to wear some seventies garb,
you know, I might even bedoing that on Sunday too, so

(09:37):
you know that might get a laughor two. Breakfast at the Wires coming
up Sunday eight to ten am.Dean Mazuoka is going to host it,
and we've had a couple of goodshows. This will be the third and
final show of the season. Thereis a free breakfast and last the first
one we had breakfast burritos. Secondone we had breakfast sandwiches. Bill was

(10:01):
here last weekend. Yeah, butI didn't get a breakfast sandwich. A
lot that renegotiated my contract next yearthat I get a breakfast sandwich. The
fact that Joe Laduca was there thatmight have precluded you from getting yours.
Yeah, that's a joke. Oneper person. So Breakfast at the Wire

(10:22):
really some fine guests so far,and we'll do it again this Sunday eight
to ten am. It's right offthe Winter Circle on track level so weekly
honors from this past week Vince Bruneokay yeah. Jockey of the Week Alex
and Iah. He's really made anice recovery after starting the season over thirty
five. He's had seven wins inhis last thirty seven starts. Three wins

(10:46):
last week. Trainer Joe Toy fourwins last week. Let all trainers double
us single wins on Friday and Saturdayat double on Sunday. Owners are some
Joe Toy clients built Jensen Aery Olson. They went to for two the Washington
Bread of the week, Missus Dynamicback on the beam with a nice skate
to wire score in the Saturday featurein the Quartershoot Cafe groom Lucio Mendez Vas

(11:11):
working for Marshall Allen of course withDaffodil Sweet winning on Sunday. Honorable mentions
last week These following all got theirfirst wins of the meet ed Carluck,
Don Robertson, Marshall Allen and RosieSimpkins with a nice win horse called Mister
Fireball for little breeder John Coonan.Yeah, that was quite the win.
Mister Fireball is out of Sheen Fallswho went half a layoff here a couple

(11:35):
of times for owner John Coonan. We're gonna have a special wagering format on
Sunday in remembrance of long Acres inthe nineteen seventies. We're going to have
exact at trifecta and daily double wagering. Only we're not going to have superfectas
or pent effects or pick threes, pick fours or pick fives. We're trying

(11:56):
to get there back to the nineteensevens a little bit and take it further.
You'll see some different type of runnumbers on the screen to pay tribute
to the seventies as well. Sowe're going to do that on Sunday at
Emeraldowns turn back the clock day, first race at two pm. A lot

(12:16):
more interviews and so forth. Aswe said, Okay, news and notes
are up at emeraldowns dot com, which is all the info you could want
for a race meeting. It's excellentwork, Vince, and every handicapper should
refer to it. So the nationalscene fellas you guys following del mar and

(12:39):
or Saratoga Bill, Yes and no, I've been just concentrating more on Emerald,
believe it or not. I watchproceedings I mean, del Mar meat
has been I think in terms ofthe stakes, competition has been top notch,
and I probably watched that a littlebit more than I do Saratoga.

(13:00):
Part of it is, you know, if I was in Pittsburgh for the
summer, I'd be on the Eastcoast time. It's a lot easier to
follow Saratoga when you're on East Coasttime than West Coast time. And the
same thing could be said if Iwas on the East coast. Dal Mar
runs, you know, late intothe night if you will. So it's
just a matter of you know, where where I'm at, and I'm out

(13:20):
here for the summer, so Iprobably watch a little bit more del Mar
than I do Sarahtoga, though Iam interested in seeing what happens. It's
I know, it's Whitney weekend atthe SPA. Yeah, just some general
comments. I you know, Iknow, Vince and I have been working
on Hall of Fame stuff and plentyof other things here coming up the mile,

(13:41):
and so we have been busy there. But I've noticed Saratoga with a
lot of scratches. Of course, they get their volatile weather periods as well,
which causes race to be off theturf. But am I wrong?
But del Mar's field size is fantasticso far in their first no content so
as, Delmar has been superior toSaratoga this year in just about every regard.

(14:05):
I'm not saying it's better over thelong haul, but certainly this year
it's in terms of betability. Delmarhas been really tough and good and interesting
and entertaining, whereas Saratoga suffered fromshort fields and their stakes races have really
been short and light on numbers.Part of that, of course, when
they get rained off the turf,as you mentioned, the field sizes shrink

(14:28):
dramatically there. But Delmar they've gota pretty good thing going. I seen
a couple of four horse field andgraded stakes at Saratoga. Any comments from
last week Bill on the racing,Yeah, well, I mean you mentioned
mister Fireball that really kind of shockedthe heck out of me. Off the
long layoff from February twenty twenty twoto July. Late July twenty twenty three

(14:52):
was the layoff, and mister Fireballtook the lead out of the gate and
basically let every step of the way. Got a seventy buyer after looking at
the news and notes from Vince's postingof all the buyers speed figures and and
what's really impressive is the fact thatmister Fireball trainer Rosie Simpkins usually doesn't win
off the long layoffs, and thefact that that this this guy did that

(15:15):
and posted a big number. I'mexpecting you gotta put the horse in some
sort of I don't even I don'teven know the conditions of the horse,
but I would expect a big classrise is what I'm expecting from um Simpkins
next time out with mister Fireball,um other horses. At last weekend,
Dirt Road Red got a seventy buyersspeed figure and got claimed out of the

(15:35):
race by John Parker, and John'sgonna, you know, look like,
put Dirt Road Red into the mileand we'll see how how he does stretching
out around two turns. And thenPoverty Bay just got a sixty five buyer.
But I liked how he did it. He was a hard luck loser
a couple of times before the winon July the thirtieth, but just ran

(15:56):
down Company's Dream rather easily in themiddle stages and went on to win by
almost two lengths as the favorite. He got hammered late in the wag ERNs.
I think some of the computer playerslike Poverty Bay as well, but
I liked how he won. Icould potentially play him back next time out,
depending on the competition. Yeah.Okay, and Daffodil Sweet who in

(16:21):
Bill's first year last year. Ithink she only ran in that one stake
last year, but she jumped herrecord up to seven for twelve. That
Emerald downs Vince with a surprising win. We've seen her pressing the pace and
showing very strong tactical speed, butshe was last there going into the three
eighth point. Ye hear in thestretch she was last. I didn't think
she had a chance, but thespeed did back up and she got competitive

(16:44):
again and ran big. The racecame back really slow for the level,
but nevertheless, it's huge to seean old class horse back on the beam
like that, and imagine they canstart thinking big again with her. And
I did talk as we skipped arounda little but long acres mile notes Blainewright
is certainly looking at the mile fortop executive. Who had that nice win

(17:06):
on the twenty third Sunday, Thetwenty third, fourth and the last year's
mile favorite last year, okay, and he's six ver eleven at this track,
so certainly a very worthy foe toall of his compete. You know,
if you look at Top Executive andSlues to his Whiz, their career
records are almost exactly the same rightdown the line. I think they're both

(17:26):
seven or seventeen. The earnings arealmost exactly the same. The differences Louse
to his Whiz has gotten better withage. A top executive was really strong
in his early career and now maybewith that confidence building win could be coming
back around. That's right. They'reboth five year olds, aren't they.

(17:47):
Okay, And we do have someyou know, not so great news in
the industry as well. With TurfParadise, it's pretty well confirmed by anybody
that knows that they are not goingto be racing after the first of the
year. Well, speaking of that, they usually start in what late September
early October, So not good newsthere, Fellas with the Golden Gates,

(18:11):
Demise announced a couple of weeks agoto Paradise. Now, so there's going
to be a lot of horsemen andhorses seeking other opportunities. So yeah,
it's stuff to comment on it.I know, it's just new. It's
just it's bad news. Every timeI close, it's bad news. Then
it becomes you know, the youknow, it's supposed to be sold.

(18:34):
But then the new person I don'teven know the name, but it was
supposed to be that. Oh well, we'll continue to race. But now
as we get closer to the endof the year where the sale is going
to go through, and it's kindof like, well, no one's really
kind of stepping up here, andso I don't know what's going to happen.
And then you know, there's thatother track, Arizona downs up in

(18:56):
the northern part of the state.I guess they could potentially filled that void.
I don't know, but it's stilltoo early and we'll see how it
all plays out. You know, they've had a lot of fighting in the
state over simulcast revenue. It's ait's a strange state in terms of peculiar
state, not a strange peculiar state. And how they handle the simulcasting.

(19:18):
He got to go to you know, I've gone to turf Paradise plenty over
the years, um and I know, like the otbs are like in the
middle of a lot of them arein the middle of bars and a few
yeah, and there's like one tellerand then you know they've got racing on.
But if they have a limited menuof the number of races that they
can show, it's a lot ofinteresting uh somewhat sometimes it's puzzling rules that

(19:47):
they've got there. But uh,you know, we'll see how it all
plays out and whether or not itis the end end for Turf Paradise and
or what Arizona downs and their ownershipand who you know that track was rumored
to beyond the on the block aswell, I thought, I know someone's
bought in the last couple of years. So a lot of a lot of
uncertainty, that's for sure. Yeah, it seems like other states don't have

(20:08):
too much trouble splitting up the revenuewhen it comes to simulcasting racing live as
opposed to another track in the statenot racing live at that time. And
then you know they use each other'swagering opportunities and buildings and signals. But
boy, they have a lot oftrouble in Arizona doing that, So for

(20:30):
right now, not good news forthe future of Turf Paradise. Hey,
let's take a break. We'll comeback with Gary Bay's original class, inaugural
class, or the Washington Thoroughbred Hallof Fame. He's going to be at
Emeraldown Sunday. We'll be right backon horse racing Northwest. It doesn't matter

(20:52):
if you love crafts, blackjack machinesor dining on the finest Asian, American
and Salish cuisines. It doesn't matterwhat you do or where you're coming from.
Muckle Sue. What you do isall at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are. All roadslead to Muckleshoe. Muckle Suit. Now

(21:21):
down the lane they come with Derwreckon the lead. Mum is in second.
There's a gap of three and herehe comes. It's Chom Salmon moving
on the outside. Derwck has thelaid Chom Salmon is going to catch him
on the outside. There's Chom Salmontaking the lead. He's Chum Salmon.
The nineteen eighty five long acres mile. What a day for a Washington bread

(21:47):
by the name of Chum Salmon fromtwenty lengths behind to win the eighty five
mile for the Chum Salmon Ownership GroupTrainers Larry and Sharon Ross. Gary Bays
was a board for his third milevictory, and one Gary Bays joins us
today on horse racing Northwest. Gary, Good afternoon, Good afternoon, Joe.

(22:10):
Hey, great to have you.I'm sure you don't really get too
tired talking about some great events likeChump Salmon and things like that. Nope,
that never happened. Well, Gary, you know the superlatives are out
there. One thing that really standsout to me in our inaugural class of
the Washington Thorobred Hall of Fame backand oh three you went in, which

(22:34):
was a great honor to be inthe first class, but also the three
horses that went in. You rodeall of them and you really had to
add some nice analogies on their stylesthat evening. Trooper seven, Chinook,
passed Captain Condo, all went intothe Hall of Fame. And boy,

(22:55):
those fellas there put some money inyour pocket and some thrills for Northwest race
fans. It's Gary, Yes,they did those names, bringing back some
memories, that's for sure. AndGary helped us out with a long Trooper
seven video. That horse has tostand right up there among Washington bread greats.
The first two times, our backto back winner of the Long Acres
mile, And just refresh our memorya little bit on Trooper seven. Yeah,

(23:18):
it was troop or seven. Thefirst time I met his trainer,
Jeans Zer in nineteen seventy nine, and he said he had his horse for
me to get on, and Iwent and got on him, and I
knew he was something special right fromthe start. His three year old year
he got started out, he wenta couple of steaks, but then the
next year he became a four yearold and his eighty and eighty one,

(23:40):
those were his years at Long Acres, and he never made any mistakes.
He was almost perfect, easy toride. Once a hole is open,
he was gone. I mean he'dget through him so fast that he never
got in trouble. He was anamazing horse to ride. Yeah, and
the key points of the race, you and Trooper seven made it look so
easy. I mean you just saidhe was an easy horse to ride,

(24:02):
but you had to make a decisionor two. But boy, he'd just
be there at the top of thestretch, the three sixteenths pole and you
always had horse left with him too. Yes, he did. I mean,
it wasn't me believe me. Iwas just a pastor. He was.
He was, He just would almostwas so automatic. It was just
unbelievable to be able to ride him. And he didn't win the derby the

(24:26):
year before, but he was innineteen seventy nine. We're going to show
that race this weekend. You'll geta chance to see that. You ran
second to head Hawk and it wasso muddy that day. Evince, I
think you were there, did yousay? Yeah? And I got the
photo and I gave you head Hawkwould have been fifty to one if he
wasn't in the mutual field. Buthe loved the mud, and Trooper was

(24:48):
like second by about five and thosetwo dominated. But yeah, that was
as Gary said, though Trooper goteven better the next year. Yeah,
and I think you did mention Troopermaybe didn't love them. Gary. That
particular mud on that day was itwas a heavier type of mud and he
struggled with it. He did.He was a low running horse, loaded

(25:08):
the ground and he would pick hisfeet up quick and put him down quick.
But he struggled on that track. And I might have moved him just
a little bit soon that day andwe got to lead easy and then I
seen this horse coming on the outside. I didn't know who it was,
but that horse was just going sofast. Mike James ROADI yeah, he
was had Hawk and he deserved towin that day. He was a better

(25:32):
horse on that track that day.Well, Trooper seven just made so many
fans. I mean it was hewas such a special horse. And then
another decade later it was Captain Condo, who, at age nine had a
just a more than tremendous season.Louis Sefer came up to win the mile.

(25:52):
Of course, he was a Gradeone, Grade two type horse,
and you were easily sucking on CaptainCondo. Tell us a couple of things
about Captain Condo. Captain Condo mighthave had the most natural ability if any
horse of road. And he washuge. He was like seventeen hands high,
and he was great and he waseasy to see in spot during a
race. But he didn't really wantto win a race. He was like

(26:15):
trying to ride a bad brother ina law. He would get close to
the lead and he'd rather go andtry to bite the horse decide him than
get by that horse. So youhad to keep changing things. You had
to move your hand, you hadto bounce around on his back. You
had to make him think things differentlythan what he wanted to think to make
him win. And when he didthat was one tremendous season in nineteen ninety

(26:40):
one at Long Acres as a nineyear old and he had a huge legion
of fans as well. And thenChinook passed. He rode him as a
three year old to a couple ofstakes wins against older horses that just didn't
happen back in long Acres times threeyear olds ran against three year olds,
and there were so many horses ineach division. But he was a super

(27:02):
fast horse, and you didn't geta chance to ride him in the mile.
But tell us about Chinook, No, he was, he was.
He was just one of the mostpurest speed horses and best and most ability
I ever did ride that could carryit. Also, I wrote him twice
at Portland that year. I thinkI'm not sure what year was that he
win the mile, said without seventynine eighty three. He won the mile

(27:25):
eighty three. Okay, I wrotehim twice that spring in Portland. He
win both those races. He wascoming back. And then at launcher As
we win wroting twice. He wenttwo stakes there and I made the mistake
of taking off of him. Well, actually that wasn't a year he's coming
back from California winning the mile. But the first time when you run second
in the mile, I made themistake of taking off of him to ride

(27:47):
an overdall horse for that race.Yeah, I remember that. That was
eighty two mile Chinook Pass almost wonit as a three year old, So
Gary Bayes. He also rode RedEye Express and all the rain near so
many Northwest owners and trainers and trustedyou to the top horse at the track

(28:07):
every year because you came through onehundred stakes wins at Long Acres by far
and away the most. Vince hasa comment here, Well, I just
want it to be great to seeyou and Vicky. Of course, Vicky
was a great writer and her ownright your wife, And what if Gary,
you and Vicky down in Arizona. What are you up to these days?

(28:29):
Well, right now, I'm retired, but it still seems like I
find things to do every single day. Vicky's working for the State of Arizona
and the Gaming Division. Still they'retrying to figure out what how racing is
going to go down there, soshe's keeping her hand in it. She
works in the test barn when whenraces are going on, and she loves
that job and she likes being aroundthe horses and horsemen, and so that's

(28:52):
kind of what we're doing right now. Yeah, you worked as a steward
down there a little bit in recentyears, didn't you. I did.
I after we left Seattle. Icame on here because they had year round
racing in the summertime, and butthat kind of fell true shortly after I
got down here. So anyway thathappened. Yeah, Yeah, turf Paradise.
Not great news out of there fortheir future, but we'll hopefully it

(29:17):
doesn't sound good right now. Ithink that's probably what you've heard, haven't
you, Gary. Pretty Much, everybody's just waiting to see what develops.
Um we keep hearing there's there's someoptions still hanging out there, but until
something actually happens that everything's on hold. Gary bays joining us. He's coming
back for Turn Back the Clock Day, and as you can tell, there's

(29:40):
a whole lot of videos to choosefrom to match up with Gary winning a
stakes race, the record one hundredat Long Acres and your final season was
cut short there too. You brokeyour leg early in the year. Gary,
Yes, I had an unfortunate accidents, but you know those things happen.
You go out there enough, you'regonna get hurt some time or another.

(30:03):
But you made a come go ahead. Oh yeah, you made a
comeback after working for the Jockeys Guildfor several years, and you had a
really good run here at Emerald Downs. You were leading steaks jockey one year
and right up there in so manyyears. So it's kind of hard to
give it up at the end, isn't it. It is very hard.

(30:25):
I mean if there's nothing that candescribe when in a race, Jo,
I mean, you just keep rememberingthat field. You forget the injuries,
but you remember the wins. Yeah, I got one more for you,
Gary. Well, you proved downin southern California. You could ride with
the big boys when they had allthose great Hall of Fame riders there.
And one horse you rode and hecame up for the mile. That was

(30:47):
probably one of the easiest mile winsI've ever seen. The horse ended up
running third in the Breeders' Cup Classic. What do you remember about Judge Angel
Lucci Judge and Luci. I wasforward, yes, fortunate to get them
out on him. Bill Shoemaker wasgoing for an operation on this snee,
and I picked him out up andthen we hooked up a couple of times
because he was riding Ferdinand at thattime, who went on to win the

(31:07):
Breeders Cup that year, and hebeat Ferdinand in the Hollywood Gold Cup,
and then there's a couple of otherstakes that he was that he won before
he came to Linkage that year. And you're right, I mean that was
probably the easiest Linkers mild Wind thatI ever had. I think it's easiest
one I've ever seen, too.It was just like a workout. I
stood down on the rail and Iwas odd by the horse's talent going buy

(31:30):
me. I mean he was.You could see how much horror she had
there Gary in the in the stretch. Yes, he he may have been
the best actual horse year round thatI ever did. Right, Yeah,
it wouldn't surprise us after seeing himthe one time up here and Bill,
were you there for that eighty sevenBreeders Cup? Nope, Nope, it's

(31:51):
I think that's my one of myall time favorite race calls, though,
Okay, was that though? WasFerdinand and Alie she had and Jane Lucci.
Yeah, yeah, that's that's myall time favorite race car. I
will say after the race though, they're interviewing Charlie Whittingham because Ferdinand won it,
and uh, he kept saying, boy, look at Judgian Gjel Lucci

(32:13):
there, and third he's really hangingin there, isn't he And it seemed
like he was more interested in thatthan Ferdinand. So yeah, yeah,
and Joe, Ferdinand reminds me ofCaptain Condo because Ferdinand, once he made
the front end, he thought hishis job was finished. So they always
had to time them perfectly, notmake the front end until I was right

(32:35):
before the finish line. But yeah, I thought that was a parallel to
Captain Condo, as Gary mentioned,Yeah, yeah, very much. So
all those races leading up to theraces, Charlie would have me work Judge
Lucci with Ferdinand. He always finishedup head and head because Ferdinand didn't want
to go on past me very veryfar. Yeah yeah, he never won,

(32:57):
that's true. He never won byvery much. Ferdinand. Gary Bays,
Yeah, we're talking little California Nationalhistory and Gary Bays certainly has it
in Washington. You were a teenagerthere in nineteen seventy three and led the
meet. You were. I thinkyou were always pretty mature mentally. You
probably you've never You've always been ahumble guy. You're not going to say

(33:21):
that yourself, but you were kindof you were kind of ready for that
meeting to begin, weren't you seventythree? You know what? It just
everything worked out that season. Icame in to Launchers for my first year
after being the leading a frantice atYakama Meadows in the spring, and I
got an agent that had had theleading writer the year before and another writer

(33:42):
there was a top ten writer,Larry Pearson Bryson Cooper. Well, they
both got hurt coming up from GoldenGate. One broke his wrist and one
broke his ankle. So my agenthad me all to myself, and so
he got me off on a rolland several trainers that you know that helped
me out, And I was lucky. Right, Yeah, then you were
that year you was Joe. Ithink that might have been Joe's last year

(34:05):
riding your uncle. I know itwas to be tired mid year, he
said, he kept he was scaredbecause they kept Uncle Joe, I've been
trouble. But you know, Joe, you can you mentioned right there,
Gary's humble. You can see howhumble he is right there. That he
got lucky. Well, that peoplesaw right away what an amazing talent the
guy was, and of course theywanted him on the horse, and uh,

(34:29):
and the rest is history. Andthat just grew and grew to the
accomplishments. We've been talking about. What a great career I mean, and
it's going to be excellent to haveyou and Vicky Bays, your wife riding
as Vicky Arragon in the eighties.Boy, to win a meet at Long
Acres with all those riders. Shewon the meet in eighty six and eighty

(34:51):
eight, and she pretty much dominated. Uh. She is a fiery competitor
for what an eighty five pound gal, Gary, that's pretty close. Yes,
yes, she was. She wastough to get by. Horses would
run like crazy for her. Shedid. Boy, when she was on
a roll, she'd be up ontheir neck, patting them and kissing them

(35:12):
and loving them come out of thepaddock. But in during the race,
she just she gave no quarters. She was tough out there. And she
really earned her way to a greatHall of Fame Washington career as well.
It would be great to see Vickyup here. She didn't win the mile,
but a lot of great jockeys haven'twon the mile, and Gary's number

(35:37):
one in that category as well.Your cousin Russell bays top you in one
mile category. He had one moremount than you did in the mile twenty
to nineteen, but you got himby two wins, which is the big
stat there. That might have beenthe only thing I'd be Russell at hell.
You know, I've told this storya lot, but I've seen you

(36:00):
and Russell get together maybe three timesup here on a mile day or something.
In Russell, you know, hetreated you like an elder, a
guy to look up to, aguy to respect. I mean, he
didn't cut up as much around youbecause you were kind of the man.
And even though he was winning allthese titles with four hundred wins, these

(36:22):
national titles. Yeah, you gotto be proud of your cousin Russell,
but he did look up to you. I saw that and respected that from
him. Yeah, No, Iam very proud of Russell. I've never
seen somebody as tough as him inthe last of it, as long and
consistent as you did. No,that's well said. That that that's it

(36:43):
in a nutshell. Russell base theNorth America's all time leading jockey by about
what is it, three thousand winsor something like that. It's some mind
boggling total. He only only wonthe Golden Gate title I think fifty six
straight time Golden Gate and a Meadows. Yeah. Well, Gary, thanks
so much for joining us. We'regoing to do some stuff in front of

(37:06):
the crowd and recap a few thingsfrom the seventies and so happy that you're
able to come up and looking forwardto seeing you on Sunday. We're looking
forward to being there, Joe.Great. Thanks Gary. Alrighty, Gary
Bays joining us on horse racing Northwestand you talk about Northwest legends the Bays

(37:27):
family for one thing. You know, we mentioned the seventies and Gary's younger
brother, Mike, who's no longerwith us unfortunately, was also a writing
champion in the seventies in nineteen seventyeight one one hundred races and he was
a hell of a writer. Twoboy, I remember seeing he could really
write a race horse. You knowhow many people have said over the years

(37:49):
that of all the Bayses, includingJoe uncle and Russell's father and Russell and
all those guys, they so manyof them said Mike Bays had the most
talent by far, and he justhe had some demons, and he was
also big. He was a littletaller. And Mike's son, Michael C.
Bays was also a Southern California writingchampion, So that that Bay's talent

(38:13):
with Jockey's is amazing. Tyler isGary's nephew. Yeah, his brother Earl
is the father of Tyler and soforth. Carl Gary's dad was And you
mentioned Joe of courses in the WashingtonHall of Fame as a writer. Yeah,
so yeah, that Russell was reallyproud of his father that night as
he came up for the mile.Okay, some great stories about him.

(38:36):
Yeah, yeah, they can neverend on the Bay's family in Washington.
All right, We're gonna take atime out in a moment, but we
did want to remember a colleague ofours that passed away earlier this week,
and many of you will know thename because he did handicap for the Seattle
PI for several years. Al Smallmanleft us earlier this week he did.

(39:00):
I really shaken up. I gotan email from his son Andy, and
he apparently had a massive stroke Sundayevening. They were able to revive him
briefly, but he did pass. And you talk about your gentleman of the
turf, Al was that very muchso and always a nice guy, a

(39:21):
great family man, absolutely loved handicappingand wrote many articles on it for publications
like American Turf Monthly and darn GoodHandicapper. In fact, you mentioned no
give Way earlier. He picked thathorse on top and the Seattle PI sixty
to one in the Long Acres mile, which is quite an accomplishment. Is
fantastic. Yeah, and Al willbe missed greatly. And he was a

(39:45):
fixture in the press box here EmeraldDowns and also at Long Acres and can't
say enough nice things about him.He came out quite a bit after he
retired his son Andy, who hegot into racing and as a fan.
Andy in the school in Seattle, and I was always I'll actually help teach
a handicapping class there he did andAndy Teuget Sounds school. Yeah, that's

(40:07):
right where Andy was a teacher. And you know, we've lost too many
good people recently, and Al's anotherone. Had a great long life though,
and best wishes out his wife Kerrieand the kids and the grandkids,
and we hope to have some kindof remembrance for him here at the track

(40:27):
before the season's up. Yeah,we will do that, Okay, Alice
Mollman passing away earlier this week,Let's take that time out and we'll come
back with our final segment and DeanMazuka here on horse Racing Northwest. It
doesn't matter if you love crafts, blackjack machines or dining on the finest Asian,

(40:52):
American and Sailish cuisines. It doesn'tmatter what you do or where you're
coming from, Mucles. What youdo is all at Muckleshoot, an easy
drive from wherever you are. Allroads lead to Muckleshoot. Mucosuit. Here

(41:15):
they go, Holy Smokes Milow BenzMilow Bands gets away early in scores.
Second in there was pepper Butt MilowBands looked like a Mercedes Bands. That
was an event on Corgie Day,July twenty third, here at Emerald Downs,
another beautiful day at the track, and of course the Corgis bring in

(41:39):
their owners their relatives, their neighborhoodfriends, and a lot of other people.
Dean Mazuka called the action for thefirst time. He's no stranger to
events out on the dirt tracks ofthe Northwest, but call mc corgis might
have been a little different. Dean, Welcome to horse Racing Northwest. Thanks

(42:00):
for joining us. Oh, thanksfor having me, Joe, I appreciate
that. How about it? Didyou get a little bit nervous known this
was going to eventually end up onESPN. Well, I'll be honest,
I'll be honest with you. Everybodymade me nervous by telling me this was
going to be on ESPN. Ifthey would have just not told me twenty

(42:23):
five times, I probably wouldn't havebeen nervous at all. But yeah,
a little bit, a little bit. But Dino has been calling races and
or again, mostly Primeville. Youdid it again this year, and you've
called a lot of races at EmeraldDowns and so your experience there. But

(42:44):
I'm gonna say this truthfully, youdid a super job on the Core.
Yeah, your calls and your sidecomments were outstanding. And we told people
earlier, We told listeners that we'regoing to have the show this at nine
pm on ESPN two. Dean ofcourse a part of it h the half

(43:06):
hour Corgi Show, and h youknow, I thought it was a lot
of fun. It ended up beingfun fun for you. Yeah, it
was great. I really, tobe honest with you, I didn't know
what to expect because I've never donethat before. Of course Tom did a
great job at that before me andI just I it was all Joe.

(43:30):
Just what came out was all realand sometimes it's the best way to do
that. Just see what it comesout of my voice. And it's exciting
because I'll pay you. Watching thosedogs run it excites you because you can
almost see in their eyes that it'simportant. It was. It was a
ball I had last oh, andthe fans love it. It's a great

(43:52):
addition to our weekly schedule. Thefirst time we did it, we had
just an enorm crowd and it continuesto be a big day. So that
went great. Dean's first year callingthe corgis uh. But you know again,
this is a year of you callingraces at the fairs in Oregon.
How'd that go? This summer?Oh? Boy, just got back from

(44:15):
Brianville, as you know, acouple of weeks ago and it went excellent
there they did their best handle. And this is a year eighteen for me
going to Prianville and we had theCOVID year off. And of course I
have done telling mock Burns Oregon, and I'm also doing the fall meet this

(44:37):
year at Grant's Pass Downs. Andthat is great that that can fit in
for you with your job at theBoeing Airplane Company. Dean grew up and
went to Renton High School and youknow, spend some time at Long Acres
and you know, great part ofthe industry. Dino. You've got horse

(44:58):
ownership for so many year years andwe're going to get to a couple other
things you're doing recently here. Buthorse ownership for you started quite a while
ago, didn't it. Yeah,we had we had our first horse,
I believe in nineteen ninety six withMike Booch. Yeah, nineteen ninety six,

(45:20):
the year Emerald Downs opened. Anda little stakes action this weekend with
Mocktails anyone. Yeah, you know, I was looking at the waits Joe,
and I noticed that I think we'rethe only horse in the race maybe
that hasn't won. Is that whywe carry one? Eighteen. Yeah that
Yeah, there's several winners in thatrace, which you know, we see

(45:43):
two year old stakes races with maidensand even first time starters at times.
But you're going in against a bunchof winners. But I know you've you
and Frank Luca Relli have been highon this horse all along. Yeah.
Boy, she's a she's a nicehorse. She's not a cup against Jack's
horse obviously and the horse by theFactor, and and uh, you know,

(46:04):
she's shown us a lot in themorning. We didn't realize or how
he didn't realize when he broke her. Our line was when we watched her
for her first three eighth of amile was we didn't realize she was that
fast. So it's kinda this isthe nicest horse, Joe I've ever had.
We ran second in the stakes race, and and uh, that's that's
the best I've ever done. AndI'll tell you I was I was tickled.

(46:27):
Thing. No, you've got areal promising horse there, mock tails
anyone in the Wtboa Lassie's on Sundayand Jacy's a legend is going well.
Also, is he going to beon the track soon? He we've tried
to enter him a couple of differenttimes. Hum, we know that the
is it the three year olds forthe Derby. We really don't want to

(46:50):
run him in there. I'd ratherget it, never win to win for
him. We're trying to get around aground or six and a half.
And he's he's been a real competitorall year long too. Now he's run
some big races and Dean has broughta lot of people into the game and
you're still entertaining them in other ways. Breakfast at the Wire, the third

(47:12):
and final edition is this Sunday, eight to ten am. There's free coffee
and there's also free breakfast and DeanI thought the first two shows were just
like old times man really enjoy theinformation and the whole atmosphere. Well,
I agree, And you and Billwere up this last Sunday and it was

(47:35):
really neat to see Bill there andin yourself, and you add just that
flavor of knowledge that frankly nobody elsehas like you do around Northwest Racing for
years. And you know you're you'revery valued at that and I appreciate what
you bring to that and I knowBiggie does do. Yeah. I enjoyed
being there, and you know, you guys round up the guests and just

(47:58):
so many different jobs at the racetrack, and you've been around long enough to
know so many people, and Vickyas well, and get them there.
It's Breakfast at the Wire. It'sfree to attend. It's eight to ten
am this coming Sunday, August sixth, and we have a little turn back
the clock action going on this weekendwith a look back to Long Acres of

(48:21):
the nineteen seventies. So that'll befun on race day. But we're gonna
get you even involved further this year, Dino with the Railbird Rally, and
I know you've been at that before, but that'll be a lot of long
Acres mile talk coming up on Sunday, August thirteenth, Yes exactly, and
I'll need a real good cheat sheetfor I don't have the mind that you

(48:44):
do for that, but I'm I'mlooking forward to trying to grow that back
to where it should be. Iknow we have a lot of fans and
I think it's going to be agreat time. Hopefully we can promote that
up a bunch and have a nice, a nice day at Breakfast at the
Wire. Even thirty I believe onmild Day is when we're going to kick
that off. And you know,I love your idea of the throwback the

(49:07):
clock. There's something about when youguys put on the big screens those race
calls from Long Acres, it itbrings back just so many memories and it's
just wonderful. Na. Yeah, you know, there's so many people now.
A couple of our stewards, actuallyall four of our stewards were writers

(49:31):
at one point, and Kenny Dollhad a good career at Long Acres of
the four. And trainers just don'tretire. We've had several trainers pass away
the last five years that were intheir nineties, quite a few and they
never really retired. And you know, so so many people are still around

(49:52):
from the Long Acre's eero. Sothat's gonna be fun looking back at that.
We're gonna have three dollar admission whichwould have been the price of admission,
and a program in Long Acre Zerraand as you said, some races
on the big screen, some pictures, some interviews from people that were there,
and maybe a little seventies dress andmusic as well. So it'll be

(50:14):
a fun day on Sunday, Ohguy, looking forward to it. I'm
trying to figure out what's aware.I have an old long Acre shirt,
I've got a bunch of Old longAcre's hats, and uh yeah, it's
it's going to be. And thenwe have a horse running, so yeah,
yeah, it's it's a looking forwardto it. I like the idea

(50:35):
of bringing back the seventies. Ithink that's a great idea. The seventies.
It was a unique decade, alot of great music. You'll be
hearing that. So we'll do thaton Sunday, and the following Sunday is
Mile Day with the rail Bird Rallyat eleven thirty and by the way,
you can get in free up tillnoon on Sunday, August thirteenth, Mile

(50:57):
Day Railbird Rally starts at eleven thirtyand the Park Breakfast the Wire this Sunday
at eight am on track level.Again, that's free to attend, with
free coffee and a free breakfast aswell. Dean's going to be hosting both
of those, and he's going tobe thinking about his horses a little bit
too, of course he is.He's got one in a stakes race.

(51:17):
So thanks for all your attention andextra duties here this summer. Dean really
appreciate it. So, Joe,I have a question. I have a
question for you. Okay, yourfavorite seventies group. What is your favorite
seventies group? Yeah? I likethe Rolling Stones a lot, and they

(51:38):
were they were huge in the sixties. But boy, they did a lot
of great work in the seventies.I mean, they're probably my favorite rock
and roll band of all time. But okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna goal
with I'm more of a soft rockguy. I like like Crosbie Stills,
Nash and I like the group ofAmerica. America had some really fine songs

(52:02):
in the seventies. There's nothing likethe seventies music as far as I'm concerned.
That's all that's on my phone whenI work out in the gym at
seventies music. I just love it. Well, we'll put an America song
in there for you as well.I appreciate. We'll do Highway there you
go, okay that we'll do thatone Ventura Highway. Yeah. And you

(52:22):
know, just disco came in thelater seventies and there was a lot of
good classic rock for the through thewhole decade. The Jackson Five and Fleetwood
Mac. I mean, it goeson and on, but it never it
never gets old to me. Itnever gets old. All right, Well,

(52:43):
see you at the races, andthanks so much, Dino. Check
out that Corgi Show. Half hourCorgi Show again on Friday night on ESPN
two at nine pm, half hourspecial all about July twenty three and Emerald
Corgi Day and much more for Dinocoming up. Dino, thank you,

(53:04):
Joe, thank you very much foryour time, and thank you for all
you do. Okay, I appreciatethat as well. Dino Maszuka joining us
on horse racing Northwest. Time forsports shorts on horse Racing Northwest, and
I'll go first, fell I'm goingto talk Long Acres Mile. So for

(53:27):
so many years nineteen thirty three totwo thousand and one, there was only
one horse that won the mile thatdidn't have a win in the calendar year,
and Vince probably if you looked ata list, you'd remember real easily,
Vince Jim Jim one in nineteen seventyfive. Yeah, in that three

(53:50):
horse finish. I remember watching thaton Channel seven. Yeah, we day
Times Rush and Woe Boy and hewon it and he didn't have a win
that year going into the race. But you know what since two thousand and
two, four horses have won themile without a win in the calendar year,
and that would be Saber Tooth intwo thousand and two for Jim Penny.

(54:13):
Then in two thousand and sixteen,Point Piper came up and ran the
fastest one mile in state history. He hadn't had a win that year for
Jerry Hollendorffer and beat Obie Harbor, who was the favorite and had a great
season. And then Gold Rushed Answerhad only run twice in two thousand and
seventeen after being California three year Oldof the Year the season before. Gold

(54:37):
Rushed Answer came in off a thirdin the Bertrando at Los Alamidos and won
the mile convincingly. And then intwo twenty another twist of fate hadn't even
run as he came into the milein the COVID year of twenty twenty,
but he was one fine horse andhe won the mile real easily that he
had been off the Preakness the yearbefore. That's right, So four times

(55:00):
since two thousand and one has ahorse won the mile thought to win in
the calendar year. I don't knowif that's going to apply this year or
not, but it's possible. Okay, Bill. My Seattle Mariners are fifty
six and fifty two. They wontheir fourth straight series in a row against
playoff contenders. How many sweeps inthere? Not many sweeps, but when

(55:23):
you're playing really good competition, winningseries is what you want to do.
So they won last yesterday. Iwas in attendance one of the thirty seven
thousand, nine hundred and forty twoto witness they come from behind, win
down three nothing, come back towin six to three against the Boston Red
Sox and sent all those Boston fansback to the East Coast crying in their

(55:46):
beer. Oh god, yes they'rethere. That was like, it's almost
like the Blue Jays when they comeinto come into town. But the recap
the fourth straight series win in arow, Blue Jays, they beat two
at three, then they beat theTwins, than the Diamondbacks, and now

(56:07):
the Boston Red Sox, so itcontinues to look good. They face Outani
tonight. By the time you hearthis, you might have they might have
already played. But they got fouragainst the Angels down in Anaheim. Then
two against the Padres next week athome on Tuesday and Wednesday. I'm sure
I'll attend one of those. Andthen they got the Orioles also at home

(56:30):
next weekend as well. Long agowas Mile weekend. But then after that,
sixteen of the next nineteen games areagainst some of the worst teams in
all of baseball. And this iswhere Vince, Yes, they need to
sweep at least one of those series, I think because the winning two at
three or or whatnot. I don'tknow if it's going to do it,
because in September they play some realteams, so but they you know,

(56:53):
they got Kansas City, a coupleof series against the Royals, They've got
the White Sox, they got theElkland athlete X and the Mets who are
just giving up on the season. So they've got this is his go time
for for my Seattle Mariners. Butfifty six and fifty two looking good,
and we'll see what happens this weekendagainst the Angels. They made a big

(57:15):
trade as well, or they tradeaway they're closer Paul Sewall. They got
a couple of really nice prospects,as Dominic Canzone, a twenty five year
old and made his major league debutearlier this season. He contributed against the
Red Sox. And then there's ayoung shortstop second baseman, twenty three year
old by the name of Ryan Blisswho's really turned the quarter corner offensively,

(57:37):
and he said now playing at Tacoma, I think he's going to be on
this team next year as well.So I thought it was a pretty good
trade. Do you think it's agood trade. Yeah, okay, I
think it's a very good trade becausethe Mariners do have a surplus of relievers
and they're just gonna move everyone upand notch and we'll see how they how
they do, but sell high onrelievers, which is what they did.

(57:59):
Yeah, you know, and hewas, uh, you know, he'sn't
what thirty three thirty four years oldtoo, and even though he had some
major contributions to the team, Ithought that it's worth a worth a shot,
and they and obviously management did aswell shipping him to the Diamondbacks.
Okay, well, you know they'veplayed one hundred and eight games that it's
exactly two thirds of the way throughthe year, So what's fifty six and

(58:22):
twenty eight they're on an eighty they'regonna finish eighty four and seventy eight.
Oh, come on, they'll dobetter, that's right, said yeah,
if if they're you know, byLabor Day, if they're not right in
the thick of it, like withina game or even in that third spot,
because that September there they face all. You know, they end.

(58:43):
They end a season playing the Rangerstwice and the Astros. So it's not
going to be easy, easy peasyif you will, in September. So
this is this is go time forthem the rest of this month and and
up until Labor Day. I hopeyou're right. We'll see. I know
you're you're jaded, and well Ithink you mentioned the Otani beating them to

(59:05):
night would set the tone in afour game series and big four games record.
It's it's only nine and four whatever. And speaking of sports shorts,
everyone made a big deal last weekwhen Otani threw a one hitter in the
first game of a doublehead against theTigers, one hit, shut out,
and then homered twice in the secondgame. Great accomplishment, But June twenty

(59:27):
third, nineteen seventy one, RickWise in one game through a no hitter
and hit two home runs in afour nothing win for the Phillies and over
the Reds. So that was evena greater one day. Not many people
remember Rick Wise, but um,that was maybe even better than O Tanni's
great day last week. Yeah,I remember a baseball card of Rick Wise.

(59:51):
They played for the Indians. Hemight have He was mainly with the
Cardinals in the Philly had a goodcareer. I think he won about one
hundred and sixty games, big tallright hander. Um, he was effective.
Okay, no such thing as asure thing in racing. I've got
one you can take it to thebank thing, And it's kind of a
trick question. Last last Saturday,March on Lynch, a five year old

(01:00:12):
gelling here finished fifth or seventh inrace five. He is now over twenty
two on fast tracks, three forthree on wet tracks, so three for
twenty five lifetime. If it's wet, Bedham, take it to the bank.
If it's not, just toss him. And I know it's a little
simplistic, but that's kind of aquirky record. A couple of other steak
shorts here, the last six ladsteaks. You know, if you're gonna

(01:00:37):
try to beat the fair little hopefor you here, Joe. The winning
payoffs, It's Turbo twenty six, sixty of you from Above ten twenty,
Dotton seventeen eighty Months, eight eighty, This Great Nation ninety eight eighty,
Elliott Bay sixteen eighty, last twolast season. Oha Breeze somehow paid twelve
bucks last year and Koran paid thirtybucks. So we've seen a couple of
surprises in these two year old stakes, and I think a lot of it

(01:01:00):
is they're going six and a halffurlongs, which is farther any of them
have runs. So we'll see ifthat happens. The inaugural Lastie Stakes nineteen
eighty two, the winner was Flagat Daloon, who was one of the
all time great phillies or mayors inWashington. Ended up being a Grade one
winner on turf in California, theRamona in eighty four with Frank Oliver is

(01:01:21):
up. The inaugural Lads winner,Dave's Reality was a pretty good horse,
started off five for five, ownedby Dave Arensberger. Yeah, he was
just getting out of the hydros intoa horse racing then. Yeah, that
horse dominated the two year olds atLong Acres that year. As you mentioned
five for five. Okay, mybest baseball pitcher hitting thing of course,

(01:01:44):
which Tony Claninger hit two Great GrandLams in one game. Yeah, that
came up last week when people wereon a website we're talking about greatest games,
and yes, a couple mentions therefor Cloninger boy. Okay, so
some selections for this weekend Friday nightat Emerald Downs. Guys, I'm gonna

(01:02:07):
go to miss miss Lynn's on Friday, isn't she tomorrow? Yeah, she's
going route to sprint. She wasreally pretty dull there on July twenty first,
that's gonna be two weeks ago.But her last two sprints she ran
well. And we've got we've gotsome speed in this race with Big Fashion

(01:02:28):
likes to get into the race.Big Mama Thornton's really sharp for Bob Bean,
Square Footage gets really close to thepace. Pearl River Delta Slice of
Pie is going to be really hardto beat if she runs anywhere near her
last race. But I'm gonna giveMiss Lynn the nod, and you gotta
have her around ten to one orso, don't you? I think I
have a right at right at ten? Okay, Miss Lynn is going to

(01:02:51):
fire against a lot of speed goingroute to sprint for trainer Steve Bullock.
So Bill, what do you havefor Friday or Saturday? Friday's second race?
Claimer is non winners of two sixfurlongs to distance. I liked the
two Moonlight in Wine. Trainer VinceGibson last time out at a mile kind

(01:03:13):
of got a you know, gotcaught in a lot of traffic in that
race on the turn and you know, finished a decent third. The winner
of that race, Lago di Ro, kind of freaked for Luciana Medina Gabriel
in that race and Moonlight and Wineby the time he finally got some clear
running room, the top two ofkick well clear. And I just think

(01:03:37):
that Moonlight and Wine cutting back indistance his last sprint race, he had
a check just reading my notes again, a slight bump at the start,
but he had to check at akey point on the turn in that race
and still rally nicely for third. And it's a race that, you know,
for the level, it seems ratherrather average, if you will,

(01:03:58):
with the is in the making adrop down and claiming price as well as
contagious as sex and you know validatesrising up in class, but he likes
to come from the clouds, cloudswhich Moonlight and White likes to come from
off the pace as well. ButMoonlight and Wine, I've had a couple
of trouble notes in his last coupleof races. So we're gonna go with
him the number two Moonlight and Wineand five to two and Vince's morning line

(01:04:21):
in the second race in Friday night. Okay, and Bill was a guest
at breakfast with Twire last Sunday, and Bill, you gave him a great
one, a seven to one winner. I forget her name right now,
but she had a secret Yeah,I think so. She'd had two trouble
trips in a row. Yeah, and one pretty easily seven to one.

(01:04:44):
That was a good one for allthe fans. I heard somebody in the
quarter shoot talking about that yesterday.Good Yeah. Saturday, and Vince isn't
making selections because he does the morningline. I think Moki is going to
be tough on Saturday. He drewpost number eight in a maiden special weight
race. It's the third on thecard Saturday, eight runners in there.

(01:05:08):
Two year old maiden special weight Moki. He's run against Whiskey Harbor twice.
He's got blinkers on, he's gotstocking speed. Javier Mattius is back,
by the way, Javier had alittle bit of a he banged his foot
in the starting gate, so hemissed a few months last weekend, but
he's back, and there's certainly someother possibilities in there. There's some firsters,

(01:05:30):
a dynamic secret firster out of aharbor of the gold Mayre and uh,
you know, Nightline looked really goodin his career debut. There's another
harbor of the gold firster, butI don't want to go Moki who not
sure the morning line there? Fince, Okay, this is that low,
so that's not a huge outlier there, But how about you bill Well.

(01:05:53):
Then eighth race on Saturday, it'sa you know, conditioning claiming race,
twenty five hundred nine winners, thefour winever race since February, and I
just I think there's a lot ofspeed in the race and a horse that
got a a really it was astrange trip. It was the two hours
Bob Sniper for Hilario Perez. Hebroke on top, but he also got

(01:06:15):
bumped at the start and then droppedall the way back to second last and
actually made up a bit of groundin the last furlong. It was a
race that they went one two aroundthe racetrack Asian Rain and Warfront Fighter,
and that race in July twenty secondhe was coming off a little bit of
a layoff as well, and Ijust think that Bob Sniper second race off

(01:06:39):
the layoff, could improve off ofthat effort. And there's gonna be just
a just a myriad of horses.I want to be on the front end.
Coach Charlie Zakias does a lot famousrock Star, so I thought he
was interesting at five to one.And also Prince of Lucky, who might
even be a bigger price gets firsttime they gron you know, the winner
of his last race. What wasI thinking, got a lofty buyer speed

(01:07:01):
figure for a condition twenty five hundreddollar claimer and this looks like a little
bit of an easier spot. Idon't know how he's gonna what type of
trip he's gonna get, but he'llhe'll get a big price on him.
So both of those horses I thoughtwere interesting. In the eighth race on
Saturday five, I've had an inklingon Prince of Luck his last couple,
but yeah, if he gets agood trip, he is a live long

(01:07:25):
shot in there. Okay, there'ssome selections. I don't know if you
want to go to Sunday or not. I'm not ready for Sunday myself yet,
but I've looked at it. Butthose are the ones I liked.
That so far, so very good. All right, so there's some selections.
Trivia last week we had the questionwas awesome. Jim holds the top
two spots as the richest long acresmiles starter both in two thou eleven and

(01:07:50):
two tho twelve. He was therichest starter in in race history two point
eight million in two thou twelve. And who's the next horse behind him on
the list? Well, I didn'tget a correct answer. I got a
couple of submissions, but it's simplymajestic. Way back to nineteen eighty nine.
What a long career he had allaround the country. He won two

(01:08:13):
miles in a row. He enteredthe nineteen eighty nine mile with a one
point three million dollar bankroll, andof course he won that race as well
with Ron Hanson aboard Russell Bays wonon him the year before. Okay,
new question, send your answers totrivia at Emeraldowns dot com. In the
Emerald Downs era nineteen ninety six tothe present, how many horses have attempted

(01:08:38):
a repeat victory in the long acresmiles los to his whiz is going to
do it this year? How manyothers have attempted a repeat victory? So
you got to do some research there. Are you got to spend you know,
twenty minutes or a half hour onthat. But give it a shot
and we'll get you something to dowith the long acres mile a hat or
a shirt. Trivia at Emerald Downsdot com. Okay, fellas, another

(01:09:01):
big weekend in front of us.A couple of stakes on Sunday and thanks
to our guests Gary Bays and DeanMazuka. This is horse Racing Northwest
