Cat's Ransom takes third on the insidefrom viewing the gold, but with a
fur long togo. Mock one Rulesis striding away. Mock one Rules gold
Rush Dancer trying hard in second, but as they come to the wire,
Mock one Rules the son of Harborthe gold. He's terrific and he has
(01:14):
won the Captain Condos Stakes. HorseRacing Northwest from Emerald Downs four weekends to
go in the twenty twenty three season. Thanks for joining us on horse Racing
Northwest. We've got a lot totalk about today, A couple of guests.
At the top of the show, you heard Mock one Rules winning the
(01:34):
Washington Cup Juvenile Sprint in twenty fifteen, he was undefeated at the meet.
That was quite a year for juvenilesguys. Mack wan Rules was four for
four, Barkley was three for three. Gold Rush Dancer won the Gottstein.
They all did a bunch of goodstuff after that. Mockwin Rules Washington Horse
(01:55):
of the Year in twenty seventeen. The Washington Cups this weekend, it starts
anyway with the Juvenile stakes, anda couple of those, of course,
one for the colts and geldings andone for the Phillies. Joe Withy,
Vince Brune and Bill Downs on horseRacing Northwest. We're going to be joined
by Grant Forrester and Rocco Bowen,a couple of big names in Emeraldown's history.
(02:21):
Grant, of course, the trainerof five Star General August thirteenth,
winner of the eighty eighth Long AcresMile, and Rocco three time jockey champion.
Here he's got plenty of live mountsthis weekend, and yeah, well
we'll have Grant on very shortly.Rocco will be in our third segment weekend
(02:45):
schedule. It's our last Friday nightcoming up seven pm tomorrow night. The
final horseshoe toss and promotions manager GaryDoherty has some things in store, guys
for the horseshoe toss, maybe threedifferent distances. And you know, if
you throw short, you get twohundred and fifty bucks and we're trying to
(03:05):
give away some money. Get aringer. Haven't done it in a few
years. Bill Downs has never seenit, No, Vince, we haven't
seen too many ringers in the way. Some good ones last weekend ed Corner
are the trainer. He came close. And then all three contestants where they
were good, not bad, soas opposed to the week before when things
were barely getting out to the dirtthere. Yeah, they can. So
(03:29):
they seem to kind of feed offeach other. If the first one does
good at kind of second one followsand so forth. But yeah, we
came close. Okay, Saturday fivepm racing and Sunday at two o'clock we're
gonna have the Washington Cup, twostakes races, a ten race card and
build more more doggies out on thetrack, more things to call for you.
(03:53):
You have some busy Sundays this year. Yeah, you got that right.
I took a nap on Monday afternoonI was that was a long day.
Yeah, cord Horses and twenty fivewhatever t Rex races and whatnot,
but yep, one more doggie doggierace sequence for the season. The Wiener
(04:15):
Dogs started all this stuff and KentonAllen of KPLZ, they got the Wiener
Dogs going in the nineties and wetook it over and expanded it and we
just have some great crowds on thesethem days. There's just no problem with
that. Some long days, buta lot of new fans out to the
(04:35):
track and hopefully we're building some racefans out of that. The Wiener Dog
races on Sunday also Wiener Wanna Bewant to Be as well. The Wtboa
sale was on Tuesday, and acouple of new studs in this state.
Barkley had his first yearling sold andConveyance, who's an established stallue who did
(05:00):
pass away unfortunately earlier this year. But Conveyance had his first yearlings for sale
in Washington and Conveyance is going tohave a couple more crops, and hopefully
Barkley has a whole bunch more vincent. I know you've got a few people
trying to get you in to goin on a horse. You've got any
inquiries about Barkley babies, Yeah,I got a few, and I've kind
of I'd like to, but Iyou know, with the racing club,
(05:24):
I'm kind of occupied and it's sowe'll see. It's you know, I
might buy in a small percentage onone. We'll see. But there were
some bargains there. Boy, Iwas watching a little bit online. There
were some good looking yearlings that couldhave been had for a pretty good price.
The sales stopper was at Barclay Coltout of miss Moscow Maddie. That
(05:44):
is a brother to Dutton, thetwenty twenty horse of the meeting at emerald
Downs and outstanding two year old,and we actually had him on our training
day report last week. We gotthat from the Elder Farms preview party.
So that's the topper. At fiftyfive thousand, number two, Bonnie Jenny
(06:06):
signed the ticket for a fifty twothousand dollars yearling by Brophy's Cause and the
first full from No Talking Back whowas Emeraldown's top older Philly or mayor a
few years ago. So let's seethe Barkley went to I'm not seeing that
(06:29):
right here. I think it wentto an out of state individual. I
think so, I know it wasin Mark lad he bought Andy Mathis Andy
mathis kid get one? Yeah, okay, all right, Well the sale
happened. It was down a littlebit from last year, so we'll try
and get that back going. Harborof the Gold had his last yearlings for
(06:53):
sale. That's the end of anera for sure, as Harbor of the
Gold by far the leading U andEmerald Down's history and dominating Washington Cup stats
as well. The Washington Cup statstarts this week and we'll have some picks
coming up for that and a coupleof other things going on. Neil Malarkey
of our Customer Service department, Neildoes a super job round here. He's
(07:18):
in that racing club thing, thenational thing, what the hecks it called
again? Come on, guys, what? Oh? My racehorse? My
racehorse. He's part of that withsixty three caliber. And who's she running
against at Saratoga on Friday. She'srunning against Secret Oath Nest and clari Air
(07:41):
sixty three caliber. He's in alittle tough there. She is a graded
stakes winner. She won the Gradethree Comeley at Aqueduct last fall, and
she's coming off a win as well, so she's going to be a big
price in that six horse field atSaratoga. And then Bob Rondo and Tom
Lambro, of course, Bob Rondoso well known around these parts. And
(08:03):
Mike Poorch, the trainer of CallMe Fast, who's nine to two in
the one million dollars Charlestown Classic onFriday in West Virginia. That's not bad,
guys, nine to two for amillion bucks. You followed those older
horses a bit. Charlestown Classic, has they have a hometown hero in there?
(08:26):
Yeah, that's fourteen for seventeen yea. And of course I think you
gotta like the turns at Charles. It's kind of like if you go up
to Hastings, you'd better like likethe terns because the turns are a plenty
in those in those route races. You've been to that track, Bill,
Charles, Now I have not,all right, I have never been there,
(08:50):
and you've been there. Vince,Oh yeah, Vince. Well,
when my sister used to live outsideof Washington, DC, her and her
husband. Yeah, I took aroad trip very going to Mayberry. Yeah.
It was a nice plant there,it was. It was a lot
of fun. This was probably aboutnineteen ninety or so, Charlestown, West
Virginia. I've been through there.I didn't go to the track. Giant
Games the favorite in there at fiveto two running for a million bucks,
(09:13):
Skippy Longstocking at three to one,and then call me Fast is the third
choice at nine to two. Blinkerson. He's coming out of a fourth
and the corn Husker that Giant Gameand Skippy Longstocking finished in front of him
there. I was looking at theDRF YouTube picks last night and both Mike
(09:37):
Beer and Dan Hillman pick called meFast to win that race. So good
luck to the local connections. Callme Fast in the one million dollars Charlestown
Classic Friday on their big day inWest Virginia. Vince. News and notes
are up at emeralddowns dot com.And once again, if you want to
know what's going on at this meeting, go to emeraldowns dot com. Go
(10:00):
over to the right and click onnews and notes and it's all there.
Man. That is great work,Vince. I don't miss it every week
myself. We get to know andwhat's new this week? Not too much.
We got all of last week's actionup there and all the standings for
all the divisions this year, horsesthat have won races, and the breeders,
(10:22):
the sired leading sires, et cetera. And we always have the weekly
honors up and we can talk aboutthose from last week here real quick.
And then also the quarter horses wehad last week. Okay, our jockey,
how about this bill you called Wolfand Urentez and his first ever winter
Dumaldowns. He got Secret Lifestyle upfor a sixty two dollars victory. I
(10:43):
believe it was that Saturday night's firstrace something like that. I remember that
the pace was very fast and hesat and last and it was the last
man standing. And Don Roberson, that's a familiar name to a lot of
people here. That's the second longshot winner at the meat. Keep an
eye on him, our lost Margarita'strain. Hilario Perez. He had a
big week five starts with two winsin two seconds. Owner Lusk Racing,
(11:05):
Gary Lusk and the family two fortwo last week. They're having another big
year. We WTBO Washington Bread YoungLife Flora bred by Keith and Jan Swaggerty,
now trained by Hilario Perez. Youknow that she won a nice race
and she's now got three wins atthe meet and that was a twenty four
thousand dollars allowance, So she's reallybeen a horse on the rise here this
(11:26):
year. In our Quartershoot Cafe Groomof the Week, Ed Carollox horses are
beginning to run pretty good. Gota third in the Washington Oaks with Pepper
Mill and Prairied Jabez has had acouple of nice efforts. Tanya Williams is
our groom of the Week, andthen last week we had a couple of
the big quarter horse races here andthe John Dear Juvenile Challenge Nowhere to Run
a Washington bread by Freakier. Youknow, it looked like Debrose Cartel had
(11:52):
had the measure of nowhere to run, but nowhere to run, came back
on the inside and got the winat seven to two for jockey Jimie Lopez
trainer Benito Curry El non or abig one the John Dear Emeraldown's Bank of
America Championship, a Polinaria Prize.I have to go back to bh Lise's
Boy to find a horse that's quarterhorse that's been a kind of as dominant
(12:13):
as she has been in her twostarts this year. She won by a
length going away over fast moving Freight, earning a berth to the two or
fifty thousand dollars final at lone StarPark on October twenty first. She might
be worth following there. She's prettytalented. She certainly loves Emeraldowns four for
four, so nice work by trainerLorenzo Marquez Campo and jockey Corder Elton Is
(12:37):
at Corter Elton Ben with cord EltonBen. Yeah, he was proud of
her. He just picked up themount recently, both those races at Emerald
Downs this summer, and he says, I didn't even have to hit her.
You know, she's just is thatgood right now? Yeah, she
broke great and kent and was kindof never end out. Ye and the
tax code got a buyer of eightytwo on Sunday there around down Jabez and
(13:03):
tax coach just gets better and betterin my humble opinion, Even when he
lost, he had a legitimate excuseand got back on the winning track.
And that strong boy, you know, his John's final height was pretty darn
impressive. The other day he reallyran down Prayer of Jabez who's had a
couple of nice runs without a winlately. But yeah, tax Code be
(13:24):
and Bill were talking hopefully next yearwe see him in the stakes ranks,
because I think he's good enough. He's got that distinction most earnings at the
meeting without any stakes money, whichPearl River Delta had last year. As
we dig into the depths of triviahere, but yeah, tax Code has
been very very impressive three out ofhis last four. Okay, So yeah,
(13:48):
we're looking forward to three days ofracing. This will be our final
three day race week Friday at seven, Saturday at five, Sunday at two
pm. And uh yeah, sowe're gonna bring on Grant Forster after a
short time out. Stay with ushere on horse Racing Northwest, muckle Suit.
(14:11):
It doesn't matter if you love crafts, blackjack machines or dining on the
finest Asian, American and Sailish cuisines. It doesn't matter what you do or
where you're coming from muckle Su.What you do is all at Muckleshoot,
an easy drive from wherever you are, All roads lead to Muckleshoot. Muco
(14:37):
Suit too and Alf for months togo in the long acres mile and it's
five star General who shrugs off aman's man. I'll Belatore's on the outside,
third Armaturals and fourth. Then it'stop executive sluz Tiz Whiz is on
the grandstand side with a lot ofwork to do. They run down of
the final furlong and it's five starsl on top by three ill Bellator's in
(15:01):
seconds loosed his whiz down the centerof the course. But with a sixteenth
ago it's five star General with JoeBravo apart, taking the long acres mile
August thirteenth, history at Emerald Downs. Why because it was a long acres
mile and another great day in thePacific Northwest. Five star General, as
(15:24):
all of us talked last week andafter the race of quite a dominant victory,
very impressive run, fast time, speed figures high. He won the
race and for the Altea stable ofKen al Hatif, trainer Grant Forster,
jockey Joe Bravo, and Grant Forsterjoins us here on horse racing Northwest.
(15:46):
Grant you still basking in some mileglory? Oh yeah, it'll last for
quite a while. It always doeswith the mile, for sure. Yeah,
well, congratulations again that horse. It's got quite the lineage here at
Emerald Downs over the last four seasonsnow with four straight appearances in the mile,
(16:07):
four different trainers on the program, and you got bragging rights on that
deal. Man. Uh boy, quite a turnaround for that veteran. And
you know you talked about it manytimes, but things have really gone good.
And tell us about the calendar yearhere for five star General. Yeah,
(16:27):
I mean we we mapped out aplan and us so seldom works than
horse racing. The plan just cameto fruition and uh, you know,
to win those kind of races, and whether it's the greatest stake anywhere or
a big race anywhere, it's everything. My experience has always been that everything
needs to go right, and inthis case, just everything went went really
(16:51):
really well, and just as wehad planned. He shipped out really well.
And my assistant Gustavo Albarado, whorides them every a, he was
out there to ride him and makesure that he was feeling. And you
know, he commented to me thefirst day he wasn't quite there, the
second day he wasn't. He wasa little better, but he could just
feel kind of you know, thehorse was getting over the travel and by
(17:14):
the time we got to to Saturdaymorning when he trained, he felt like
he was all the way there andready to go. And uh uh you
know, the next big thing wasworrying about Joe Bravo making his flight to
get there. So uh but uh, yeah, everything it was just everything
worked out perfectly and the horse isjust in. The horse is feeling good.
He's he's perfectly sound, which isa key in any in any sport
(17:37):
and particularly in ours. That he'sjust kind of firing on all cylinders right
now. Very good. Uh.Did he win that first start you had
with him last fall at Keeneland? He did. Yeah, coming off the
he had a tough beat as youknow at Emeralds. Uh when he ran
a huge race that day, therace after the mile and uh and was
(17:59):
in insanely fast fractions and just gotnipped late. And his first start for
us that Keenland was in a prettynice salty allowance race. Uh as well,
they all are a Teamland generally. But yeah, he got away with
a nice, nice lead that dayand some pretty sensible fractions and uh we
got we got off on the perfectfoot with him, right away, and
(18:22):
then we had a couple of excuses, for legitimate excuses for his next two
poor races. Kind of freshened himup, and he's come back this year
and all four races now have beenbeen really really solid races. They have
the blinkers off looks like that didn'thurt his chances. But man, what
a turnaround for a seven year oldhorse to just show that consistent speed.
(18:44):
And you had to be real happygoing into the first turn in the mile.
Grant. Yeah, as you know, the first turn is the key
generally in winning and losing the milea lot of a lot of years.
And it was once he got intothat that good position, uh and turned
down to the backside and in theclear and and uh you know, had
(19:06):
the one target to his inside,I felt really really good about how he
looked and how how Joe was confidentlyriding them, and uh so, yeah,
I mean the first turn was critical. As always, He's not a
horse blessed with you know, blisteringgate speed, so with a short run
to the first turn, that wasmy biggest concern going into the race,
was you know, him getting jostledat the start or maybe getting shuffled back
(19:29):
or something happening. But once heonce he once he made it through that
that clear and and got to theuh uh, got to the backside in
great position. I was feeling reallygood. Grant. You made mention to
me about potentially what's next for fivestar general. You mentioned an allowance race
of Churchill downs with their big pursesthey got in Kentucky, and then possibly
(19:49):
I heard something about a race inCanada. What what is going to be
next for five star general? Well, I haven't discussed it totally yet with
the with mister Canny, I'll hatas the owner. But there is an
allowance race. He's eligible four hereat Churchill going a mile in the sixteenth
on the twenty fourth of September. It's one hundred and forty eight thousand dollars
(20:10):
purse, which is very nice, but you know, might be a little
bit of a tricky race to fill. There's two races here the following weeks
that are both options as well, and we'll will nominate and take a look
at. They have the four hundredthousand dollars ACAC which is a Grade three
at a flat mile and as awin and you're in for the Breeders' Cup
Dirt Mile, and then they alsohave the Lucas Classic, named of course
(20:34):
in honor of Wayne Lucas, andthat's five hundred thousand, Grade two going
a mile in and eighth. Obviouslyoff the mile win the ac AC probably
makes a lot of sense, althoughI have some trepidation about that because it's
as as most of you, asmost of your listeners will know. And
uh, it's a one turn milehere at Churchill, and I think,
(20:56):
you know, my opinion is twoturns is probably his best game. I
think it allows him to kind ofuse that first turn to get position and
get into his rhythm. And he's, as I mentioned, he's not a
horse that runs the first quarter necessarilyreally fast, but he definitely runs the
second and third quarter really fast. And uh so, I you know,
(21:17):
we'll have to take a look atthe fields, but obviously those will those
will be considerations. He's, uh, he's shipping back here this weekend.
He's he's been staying in Blaine Wright'sbarn where he was for the mile,
and they've been jogging him through theweek and and Blaine sent me a video
him and he's feeling good and doinggood So he's leaving leaving Emerald downs tomorrow
evening and we should be back hereSunday afternoon in Kentucky and we'll we'll see
(21:41):
where we're at when we get homeand how he's feeling. But those those
are the three current options coming upfor us here at Churchill. Yeah.
And that's one other thing you justmentioned Blaine Wright, isn't it. I
think it's kind of cool where Blaine'strying to win the mile and he's staying
in in your in your barn arein Blaine's barn area. Talk about how
how how that about? You know, obviously you have connections lots of places,
(22:04):
but how does that come about? That with Blaine Wrights and staying in
his barn you know, post mileand even before the mile? Sure?
Yeah, So Blaine was was anassistant to me for a couple of years
that Emerald before going back out onhis own again. And uh, and
he had actually when he had I'mtrying to remember the horse's name, the
(22:26):
horse that he had that ran secondin the Breeders Cup juvenile No uh an
door a door? Yeah, sowhen a note when they were on the
Derby trail that next spring, Uh, when they shipped to Fairgrounds for one
of the prep races, Blaine shippedinto my barn and et cetera. So
(22:47):
it was just a trade up,and we had talked about it ahead of
time, of course, and uh. He also it was funny Ill Bellator,
who of course ran second in themile. He also had him stable
and his barn, and him andIl Belator and five Star General were installs
right next to each other, sowe had the exact and the neighboring stalls,
sure did. Yeah, it's justyou. We're all we're all competitive
(23:11):
in horse racing. We're all competingagainst each other and uh, but at
the same time, we're all we'reall just trying to do the same thing,
get our horses to run faster ina circle than everybody else. And
we're all we're all looking out tohelp each other. And if those guys,
you know, when they ever theyneed a hand back here, I'm
more than happy to help them, and vice versa. Yeah, Grant,
you mentioned that he runs the secondand third quarter. That was certainly the
(23:34):
case. In the mile, goingaround the far turn, that was about
as beautiful a look and a horseI've seen at Emerald Downs in a long
time. You must have been prettyconfident watching out things, thinking someone's gonna
be really good to beat this horse. Yeah, as a trainer, you're
just you're always think about what couldhappen or there's always something to you.
But it didn't seem like anybody wasreally closing. And obviously ill Bellator kept
(23:59):
taking and runs at us, anduh, I was looking for the closers
to come. But yeah, hejust looked Joe just looked so confident on
him, and the horse looked likehe was full of run, as you
say. And I really thought wehad obviously a big shot turning for home,
and I certainly kept rooting right throughthe wire, uh knowing what what
can happen in horse racing. Sobut yeah, he just he's a he's
(24:23):
a horse that, like I said, can really run those second the third
quarters, and and that's where youreally put a lot of horses back on
their heels when they're when they're wantingto maybe be a little relaxed before they
make that run. But yeah,he'll he'll Belatore really took a good run
at us, you know, severaltimes, and kept you know, kept
closing the gap right even to thewire. I think five star general.
(24:44):
Probably he's up just a little onhis own maybe or maybe not, but
yeah, it was. It wassure a good feeling turning for home the
way I looked. Well. Granthas done just a great job. He
was super popular and successful at EmeraldDowns Pact. Vince, I remember those
stats. I think he had thehighest winning percentage of any trainer with a
(25:04):
minimum of starts when he left. And uh, you know, your dad
really paved the way for you.I know you give him credit. You
got a chance to see your dad, Dave and Terry Forrester, your mom
up there in BC. How's yourdad doing. Dad's doing well. He's
he's gone through a few little healthissues and wasn't quite able to come down
(25:26):
to the mile. My mum thoughtit was just going to be a little
too much for him to make thetrip and then it would have wiped him
out. I went up the nextday after the mile and we spent three
days at home. Had a greatvisit at home. But yeah, he's
doing much better. He's doing reallywell. And there's still still got a
few horses going in Haystems to keepkeep the interest going. But yeah,
(25:47):
Mom and dadd are are doing well. We had a really nice visit at
home, and I don't I don'tknow how many long acres miles he's going
to be around for yet, butit was a really special feeling to get
to get an other one and forthem to be able to celebrate. We
went out for a big steak dinnerthe first night back at home and had
our celebration together. Then yeah, well I'm sick you left town because you
(26:11):
know, I got a nice mealafter the mile there at the barn,
and then breakfast the next morning, all on Grant. But now your dad
is just I love talking with yourfather. He was all over North America
when he was younger, working withand around so many legends, and I
know he he taught you so manythings just by observing yourself. And you
(26:37):
know, you won the mile forHerman Sarkowski no less than Herman Sarkowski in
two thousand and five with no giveaway, and of course they all had a
family going back to Joe Gottstein. The same silks that Gottstein used for two
mile Winds in the sixties. Alot of Northwest history involved, and speaking
of ken El hadaf sure he wasjust overjoyed, Like you know, you
(27:02):
can watch all that video live now. And I believe he did, didn't
he in Hawaii? Oh yeah, yeah, he was there for a seventy
fifth birthday and uh and actually,uh yeah, I know. I spoke
to Kenny shortly after the Winter Circleceremony and yeah, he was just over
the moon. And he actually evenput his wife Marlene on the phone and
she was in tears, and soyeah, it was a pretty big celebration
(27:26):
for the family. Of course, his brother Mike was there to accept the
trophy on his behalf, and yeah, it was a real special moment I
think for that the whole family. And Kenny was out last night with my
partner Jim Holly and visited five StarGeneral and uh, I'd better be sure
and mentioned this so as as youknow, as all you guys know,
(27:48):
the tradition is when you win thestakes race, you buy coffee and in
the Quartershoot Cafe the next weekend.Correct. Yeah, so Kenny just decided
to take it a little step furtherbecause of the mile wind and so this
Sunday in the Quartershoot Cafe for alllicensed personnel, it's free breakfast or I
think I think what they're doing withSally decided to do is you can either
(28:12):
get a free breakfast of eggs inyour choice of breakfast meat and toast and
hash browns, or you can geta burger and fries if you're eating a
little later in the morning. Somake sure and take advantage of that and
put it on Kenny's let's all beyondKenny's tabs. So very gracious of him
to sponsor that, and everybody getsgets a free meal Sunday morning at the
(28:33):
Quartershoot Cafe if you've got a license, I should say. So that's taken
it up a level for sure. That's real generous of Kennel had of so
grant just a great weekend here atEmerald Downs Mile Weekend and Mile Day and
the Long Acres Mile itself. Andhey, good luck to you as always,
(28:55):
and h you know, who knowswhat next year might bring, but
that horse, as a seven yearold five star general's never been better.
I think everybody can agree with that. And who knows, maybe we'll see
you next year. Oh we'd loveto. I know Kenny would love to
come back and defend the title nextyear if if the General is up to
it. And yeah, it wasjust mild Day is just one of those,
(29:18):
one of those wonderful days in racing. I've been fortunate to travel to
lots of different tracks, whether it'sa Aascal Day at Monmouth or Arlington,
Million Days at Arlington, or youknow, just the biggest race that whatever
track you're at, it, Oh, there's just this special, special buzz
in the air. And being backout there for Mild Day, I've I've
watched so many Miles on TV overthe last several years, and and could
(29:42):
you know, I knew how itwas out there, but to be back
and to enjoy it again on justanother perfect Northwest summer afternoon, and got
to see so many wonderful old friendsand catch up with and even my friend
Paul had saved my lucky spot downin front of the beer stand to sell
the end of the grand stand. So it was good to know whether the
(30:03):
lucky spot still works. Yeah, that was really worked well in oh five,
that's for sure, two days ina row, as I remember.
Okay, Grant, thanks so muchfor joining us. Good luck to you
in your stable, and it's alwaysfun to recap a long acres mile victory.
Take care, we'll talk to youdown the road. Thanks Grant,
(30:23):
Thanks so much, Thanks Grant.Grant Forrester joining us on horse Racing Northwest
two long acres mile wins and thatwas his first starter since no giveaway in
five and hey, how about goingon to a little horse of the meeting
talk. You know a lot oftimes after the mile last year's loosed his
(30:45):
whiz had a huge lead in thatcategory and won the award after taking the
governors and the mile. He's certainlya contender, guys. You know,
he won the Governor's third and themile. A Looha Breeze has her three
victories and four starts, two steakswins, Clovis Connection, a couple of
steaks, Blazing Bella Blue, Iwould say, is still a contender.
(31:07):
And I guess there might be atwo year old out there who who could
do something. But it's pretty wideopen this year. Bill, Yeah,
it's still to be determined. Youyeah, you mentioned the three I wrote
down. We're close connection, aLohabres an appeal factor. But we'll see.
You know, any of them aregoing to be running here in the
(31:30):
final few weeks to add to theirresume. Could be the clincher for me,
you know, sliced his whiz.Yeah, well if he if he
wins the stakes, he could bethrown in the conversation. But you should
mention you got to run twice rightthat the meat to be eligible. That's
why five star general right, noteligible. Otherwise I just put him and
(31:51):
just say good night. But yeah, he's the best horse we've seen so
far. Right, but close connect, you know who's who's to me?
Close connection is probably the one forme at this point. But if Loeha
Breeze were to find a way towin another stakes, you know, to
me, it's about stakes wins. You know, it's nice winning allowances and
all that, but you know, for me, it's it's all about stakes
(32:13):
victories and what you've done during themeet. I'm with you. I think
it's still on the balance here.Could go a lot of a lot of
different ways. But yeah, ifit ended the day, you know,
I might lean Clovis connection just withtwo really sharp wins. You know,
he didn't go for the hat trickbecause Blaine Wright brought in Prince av Udhabi
and sent Clovis's connection we've mentioned downto Santa Rosa where he won another stake,
(32:37):
So good horse, But yeah, you could make cases for several of
them at this point. You know, even if Dirt Road Read had maybe
uh run a little bit better,or if he had ran in the mile.
But he's got five wins. Youknow, that be unprecedented for a
claimer probably to win. But anything'spossible in a year like this. Yep,
I'm I'm holding off, you know, until some of these stakes are
(32:59):
run. We've got some action fourweekends left, and yeah, it's gonna
be h well, it's a vote. We'll see what happens down the road
with these races remaining. All right, we're gonna take a short time out.
We're gonna come back with Rocco Bowen, three time Emerald Down's leading rider,
and he'll be in action with somelive mounts this Sunday. We'll be
(33:20):
right back on horse racing Northwest MuckoSuit. It doesn't matter if you love
craps, blackjack machines or dining onthe finest Asian, American and Silish cuisines.
It doesn't matter what you do orwhere you're coming from Muckle su What
you do is all at Muckleshoot,an easy drive from wherever you are.
(33:46):
All roads lead to muckle shoot muckosuit as they turned into the stretch,
and it's Nissa as held work bound, Nissa as a lead by three.
Shelby Shortstop is in second, thenin third, that's Rocket a day,
and then it's Coastal Girl with asixteenth that Goo, it's Nissa, Nissa.
(34:09):
We'll give John Parker two ends onthe card. Nissa under rock o'bowen
with the impressive maiden victory here atEmeraldown. She followed that up with a
good effort in the Wtboa Lassie's aswell, and her jockey is coming back
to ride this Sunday at Emerald Downson the card and in the Washington Cup
(34:34):
and three time Emeraldowns jockey champion Rocko'bowen, very popular man here in the
Northwest joins us. Very popular Rocko. Hey, good to have you on,
man, Thank you, Joe,thank you Dad. You guys have
me on. Well, you're backin Ohio right now writing at Thistledown during
the week, and we'll get toyour popularity out here. But your schedule
(35:00):
all has been pretty crazy the lastfew years. Toss a couple unfortunately,
a couple injuries in there, Butboy, how's this year. Tell us
about the year so far for you. As you guys know, yes,
yesterday was a huge day for me. This week was a huge, huge
(35:22):
weekend in general. Man, Iwant I don't want to get in a
number right. I want nine thisweek. I want four yesterday. I
want two on Thursday. Thursday callsover to this this week. I want
two on Thursday. Last week.I want two on Monday. One on
Tuesday. Didn't ride Wednesday I hadone horse and scratch and I want four
yesterday. My agent name is CoreyHayes. You know he's dad's been an
(35:45):
agent for forty years. Steve Hayes. I'm just blessed to have to have
good agents, you know, andware were ever I go for like now,
how they have it. We switchjuristrictions, you know. That's why
for one whom I have so manyagents. Know they've bring up a rule
that when you swa Georgie stations,if an agent have three riders and at
(36:07):
Jewish striction two bugs and a twogern WANs in a book and they cross
jeristrictions, you can't have another.I'm four riders, So that's how come
I have Corey Hayes I'm in Ohio, Beltira and stuff. And then in
Chicago I got my agent I hadfor four years once I left the Northwest,
Penny Fish Hayes and then Dudley ismy agent. Of the Osborne is
(36:30):
my agent. Then Seattle very good. Well, they're all happy to have
you. I'll say that you're You'reI'm happy to have Damn. I'm grateful
to have dam Okay, Well,Rocco, you know you your jockey history
is well documented here in the Northwest. You know, just going back Tom
wins Will given you the mound onMaker's Finale and you coming through in the
(36:53):
Derby and just working your way forwardthree straight jockey title as you came back
to win that memorable mile in twentytwenty one. On background, there's so
much more to your career as well. The people are all around the North
America know you very well after yourstints at Oak Lawn and Arlington and other
(37:15):
tracks in the Midwest, presque Isle. So does that make it easier just
being well known around the country.Yeah, Well, let's say it backs
here, out of sight, outof mind, you know. And when
when I leave town on Thursday today, I'm not leaving today because I'm writing
Saturday in Beltira on Ohio Bright StakesDay, I'm running from my boss tame
(37:37):
time. I going up there towrite two in the stakes. Saturday is
a big breeze day here, soyou know, from my agent, to
cover from me on Saturdays when I'mnot here to breeze is huge because you
know, trainers don't get pissed off. He cover from me. Really well,
you don't use these other writers tothe breeze them because that's kind of
(37:57):
unfair. You know. We guessget the gallup boys, but of our
barn to breathe them, so nobodyget pissed off, and nobody's getting unfair.
Then it's not easy for him todo that or make it happen or
to keep the trainers happy. Buthe is and and it's it's working.
I guess try to to bring myriding boots when I show up an Emerald
(38:22):
Terror or wherever it's go. Youknow. So they're putting in the work,
and I'm trying to put in thework to you because it's not easy
on their part. None three ofmy agents, a lot of we are
making it look easy, and Ithink people are like starting to taking for
Granted, I say, all theseguys it's easy, but it's not.
They gotta do a ship to thehomework, and I have to do a
(38:44):
ship to and at home work also. All we gotta stay sharp. And
the more we keep winning like this, the more pressure it's going to copy.
We're gonna expect to keep on doingwhat we're doing. You know,
like today, I made a littlehiccup for my boss. Came hand.
I knew I should have put thestick on my left hand. He knew
how strong, how good my lasthand is. And the owners kind of
(39:06):
came down on me, but notin a harsh way, yes, because
they know how good my leaft handis and they just want to make me
a better rider. So I appreciatehow many people like that in my corner,
keeping me uncomfortable for my ashes.Hey, rock all, you know
you're doing all this traveling. Sometimesthat can be a little rough, But
I've been impressed. I see it. You come out to the paddock like
(39:27):
with our group, just full ofenergy and great greeting everybody and taking photos
with them, and you got it. You seem to just have a lot
of energy even with all the travelgoing on. Huh, My daughter has
a lot of energy. Every week, I'm trying to borrow some energy from
her. She has a lot ofenergy. So I guess he's guessing my
jeans or my genet is. AndI'm having fun doing it. So I
(39:50):
think having fun doing it is it'sreally keeping me up being positive and and
good, and so I really wantto wonder how I'm doing it. I'm
just trying to step on the too, you know. You know, I
get I don't already get sleep cominghere. You know, I do my
homework on the plane coming to theNorthwest, but coming back to Ohio home,
(40:12):
I get sleep once they once theyget my orange juice on my plane,
I'm off to sleep. Rocko bowing. Yeah, you know your routine
when you were really rolling here withthree straight titles, you'd take a nap
at night, and then maybe aboutmidnight you'd look at more film work and
look at the form, and youhad a number of different stints of homework.
(40:37):
Are you still able to keep upa routine like that for me?
Well, you you talked about whenyou were here. You know, maybe
some people go to night, goto bed at night, and you got
to get up at it's five orso to get to the track, you
try and get straight sleep, butyou you would wake up and look at
(40:59):
look at video and look at theform alow. Yeah, well I still
do that. I should do that. I still wake up one two am
in the morning if something's on mymind about a horse, or I feel
like my home works on the finished. It could be two three am.
I still wake up, but Istill do my whole. If I feel
like I'm on the finish, Istill do that. That haven't that haven't
(41:19):
changed. I haven't changed about me. Or if I can remember a horse
name that I rode years ago,it would buck me and usually I remember
it two three am in the morning. But I still stay heavily on my
homework. I studied the paragraphs now. Also there's a new outcomes with a
lot of agents use. I can'tremember his name right now. I think
(41:43):
PDN or something like that paragraph manager. Okay, I used that. I
started using that thing that came backto the East coast. My agent,
pennyfit say, She's who put meenter and got me down and got me
familiar with it. I'm like,I said, it's best to have good
people to help me do that, because when I was in Washington. Tom
and Bob Keppelletti got me all limitedto read a bridsnet. You know,
(42:07):
I still in love with the bridsneet. But back here the peagraphs numbers,
especially wearing ride in the better horses, it's a lot more accurate life.
The instance, I rode a horsethe other day, came in over
Kentucky. He was running. Hewas running sixes and eight. That's greatest
thick numbers horses. Me and myagent can't wait to ride a horse two
(42:27):
weeks ago on a Thursday, andyou know he never fired. We were
scratching our head and then that's whythe horse racing. Then we were like,
this horse should gets gallop. Justcame up with Great three or Bobby
nine lands and he never wants pickedthe bridle up. Guys, well,
yeah, those things do happen fromtime to time. Boy, you have
ridden with so many other jockeys thelast five years all over North America.
(42:53):
You know, we felt we hada real strong jockey colony this year,
as you know, when you camein for the first time, Guys like
Carlos Montalvo, Luis Nagron, SilvioAmador, Alexis Valdez, we're all new
this year, and then isaiahs Andenriquezwas back. But do you have any
comments on our jockey colony this year? Well, I wrote Alex Valdez for
(43:15):
the last two years, decided whenI would him in Pennsylvania, and then
we went to time for together inturn twenty one, so I know how
it found that it's pretty good. And we spent a lot of time in
a hot box together at both circuits. Louis Nobron, you know, he's
he's a good rider. You know, Alice CRUs good rider. You guys
could see he's looking to break myrecord and go four for four. More
(43:38):
power to him, you know,to stand up there alone. And I
hope he doesn't. I hope hedoesn't. I hope he does it.
I hope he does it, andstand up there alone and go for four
consecutive titles. It's not easy, man, It's not easy what he's doing.
So I flawed him for that. And you know, I want to
(43:58):
say, Kevin Radskey, one ofthe most classiest guys I ride with up
there. This guy has so muchclass that so many people back here every
week I go back on forth. You're like, say hi to ken him,
I rake my roan. I meanthe jockeys, the trainers of ballets.
I mean at that's I look atthat, and I tell myself,
(44:19):
whenever the end of my career arecoming close to end, my cared,
that's why I want people remember meas classy like that. And I have
the outtra most respect for me likethey have for Kevin Radkey down here.
I mean, it gets amazing,it's amazing. Yeah, I see some
similarities in you and Kevin, andthat Kevin is one tough competitor as you
can attest to, but you knowhe's so friendly off the track, and
(44:44):
as Vince just said, you comeinto the paddock and uh, you know,
we're happy to meet new people, new owners. But you certainly you
have to know how to turn iton the competition button when you get out
there and you know you're riding, you're riding the win. And you and
Kevin have some similarities that way.Bill, Well, you got Rocko,
(45:05):
You've got two mounts and the stakesraces on Sunday Nightline and Nissa Nightline for
Howard Gibson, Nightline took a realhard left hand turn at the start.
What happened? Do you remember andthat race on August to fifth, and
then talk about Nissa who lost areally talented two year old filly, an
appeal factor in the lassies. Well, absolutely remember what happened the first time
(45:29):
he broke up a two year old. He did the same thing. He
just think behind Un left that hard. The second time, you know,
he really high Un left that hard, and you know the stories disqualified me,
you know, just being honest,I didn't think it was the right
call because that day, on thatday, the same thing happened in the
first race, and I scrus cameout and the same as that thing.
(45:50):
So I didn't see why didn't takethe first race down? It tacked the
third race down, you know, but it happened, So I I felt
more back for Howard that he lostthe first. If you think I did
something wrong, penalized me. Butclearly didn't think I didn't, you know,
because the whole mabinless by the problemwith that They took the first away
from the Howard. But that's behindus, and I say, how Weard,
(46:10):
man, I don't think this horseneeded bringers and let's stick them off.
I mean, Howard, do wedid so well to get her back?
In the years. I didn't wanthis first race for him. He's
an excellent trainer, very young, with a lot of potential and talent.
She having a fall back and I'mgoing to try to correct that mistake and
(46:30):
get the job done this week.Lissa, what kild they say about her?
I used to write a mom amongthe stars. She still gass like
her big broad chest, soft force, guts the horse. She showed you
how gutsy she was coming back ineight days. She only got beat three
Lance. I mean I had fireon me the whole way down the backside,
(46:51):
and with a three weeks rest. Now I think we're gonna be looking
at a different horse. I thinkthey got to bring the running shoes.
Okay, those are some very takethe heart comments from Rocco bowing being on
those two horses, both with somespeed, and I think Nightline is one
of the favorites, and along withChancellor's Boom. Yeah the way your horse
(47:15):
Joe will be sitting out freight line, so that leaves the door open for
Rocco's horse. Rocco. Yeah,Rocco can go right down the line on
any horse you give him. Bythe way, I gotta remember Rocco.
You of course you rode a horsefor Joe with the Sipping Fire, and
you guys remember that horse pretty well. I'm sure five stakes in the row.
(47:36):
Yeah, that was a fun year, Rocco. He was a tough
competitor. You got got in withhim as a two year old, and
he was Washington Horse of the Yearat age three. So we certainly have
a lot of pictures of that thatgood year. Rocco. It's always good
to see you and talk with you. The knowledge is there, and the
(47:58):
competition and the fire out on theoval is there, and we'll see it
again this Sunday. So have asafe trip. Congratulations on your last eight
nine days back there in Ohio, and you'll be riding for the money out
here. Oh for sure, Ialways will be said, always will you
guys. Thank you guys for invitingto the podcast. Guys, Thanks Roco,
(48:21):
Thanks, thank you Roo, Thankyou guys. Have a wonderful safe
night, guys, do you guys, Rocco bow on joining us on horse
Racing Northwest. He'll be out Sundayand he's got a good chance to keep
that good streak going with those twostates. You know, it's fun with
jockey Joe is when you like Billmentions the name of a horse, and
(48:42):
they most of them have such greatmemories of exactly what happened in the race,
who the horse is, who theirmother was and all that, and
it's really you know, in Rocco, he really does his homework. He
harkened back to when the mount cameup on Maker's Finale all those years ago
and they were looking for a riderand and Tom Winzell. That kind of
really got Rocko rollin here, itdid. He won the Derby on that
(49:04):
horson that he never looked back. That was a big starting point for rock
O Bowen's career and he took fulladvantage. Okay, thanks to Roco Sports
shorts. Okay, I'm gonna goWashington Cup. Here. There's two horses
that have won three Washington Cup racesand their brother and sister, Striker PhD
(49:27):
is three for three in the WashingtonCup. He won the Mucleshoote Tribal Classic
three times, his sister younger sisterby a year, Madam Pelee, three
wins and a second in the WashingtonCup. And their damn is Striking Scholar
Striking Scholars first two Folds. StrikerPhD and Madame Pele have a record of
(49:50):
seven start, six wins and onesecond in the Washington Cup. And by
the way, Striking Scholar isn't done. She's got a four year old that
won twice at Turf Paradise this year, Sweet Savant. She's got a two
year old who's training at del marby Hard Spun by the name of Free
Again. And she's got a yearlingand a ween ling. So maybe more
from Striking Scholar, but her WashingtonCup production is pretty awesome. Vince.
(50:16):
Okay, yeah, this is kindof a fun chapter. It's Last Saturday
Night or Last Sunday. I'm sorry. Raised five five year old guilding named
Night to Remember got his maiden breakingwin for Faustino Coco Patino with Louisa grown
up. But bring that up becauseof the damn of that horse, Maggie
(50:37):
Special. That was a fun chapterhere at Emerald Downs Maggie Special one hundred
hundred and seven thousand here for ownerbreeder trainer Allen Gideon Well. Maggie Special
was the only daughter of a horseor the only four horse named orson by
a horse named Spiker, whose onlycareer win was in a maiden five here
back in twenty twelve. Well, the story is allan told its Spiker got
(50:59):
loose one night at the farm andhad a little fling with jump defense I
think that's correct, jump the fenceand had a little fling with bella cappina,
and the resultant was Maggie Special.Sniker was a two year old at
the time when he brought that margYeah, and he Maggie Special ended up
being a useful horse, one onehundred and seventh grand Year and Night to
(51:22):
Remember is the only racing full outof Maggie Special. So it's kind of
fun to see that horse get itsmaiden broken as the latest chapter in that
saga. Yeah, that's a goodone, Bill. My Seattle Mariners just
completed an eight into road trip. They lost a heartbreaker yesterday to the White
(51:45):
Sox and extra innings where they cameback to take the lead in the ninth,
couldn't hold it in the ninth inningand lost an extra innings another heartbreak
loss. I was talking events beforethe podcast. You take a look at
like their last four losses, they'reall in heartbreaks. The two against the
Baltimore Orioles. Uh, they wereboth extra innings and they lost heartbreakers of
(52:07):
the Royals. They don't lose thesegames, they would have like a twenty
game win streak. They've had twoeight game win streaks in the month of
August, which is which is reallyunbelievable. And they are in the midst
they the next three series are allagainst teams they are having very bad years.
They play the Royals at home thisweekend and they are on. They
(52:30):
got the Oakland Athletics and then theygo to the Mets and then it gets
a little more difficult. But youknow there there. I remember we talked
about the nineteen games in this stretch. They're eight and two so far.
They can go seven and two andthat that would be an incredible fifteen and
four run, and that stretch thatwe've been looking for them for them to
be doing well well, it iswhere I was three weeks ago. You
(52:52):
were talking just maybe thinking about getsqueaking into a wild card. Now the
division is very much in play.Yeah, when we recorded this on the
Thursday, the Astros lost to theBoston Red Socks by a score of seventeen
to one. So, yeah, the divisions in playing. It's really important
if you whoever wins. That divisionis gonna it's gonna be getting you know,
(53:15):
buy it from that first round. They want off to play early on.
They'll be able to set the rotationup and that's huge for the Mirriners.
But it's not all uh, youknow, sunshine and uh and glorious.
You know, Emerson Hancock rookie's donefor the breasically done for the season,
and he was kind of kind ofbe their sixth starter. So he's
(53:35):
done. And so this bullpen isgonna be you know, expanded rosters is
really going to help. But youtake a look at this bullpen, the
bullpen. You know, they tradeaway their closer Seawall to the Diamondbacks and
Munio's didn't blew another save, butyou know they've been the backbone of this
team. Munio's, Tope Brash,Isaiah Campbell, Sauceo, Gabe Spire and
(53:59):
then this other guy that they gotLuke Weavers from a guy they got from
the Reds. He had to shutout innings. He looked like he's normally
a starter, but he's a he'sa bullpen guy for the Mariners. He
looked great. Service really pointed out, you know, it's just really impressed
with his two innings of work,so we'll see how it goes here.
(54:20):
You know, Toronto's got an easystretch of games coming up through like September
the tenth, so you know,it's gonna be difficult. I'm looking more
at the Division than I are thanI am at the Wildcard, but they're
right now. They're in the playoffs. But and then, of course,
you know, Jared Kellenik might it'sgoing to probably be back here in the
month of September as well. Soa lot of things alike about the Mariners,
(54:42):
but they gotta take care of businessand it starts this weekend against the
Royals. Okay, you guys havebeen talking about their starting pitching all year,
and just listening to some Nationals aweek they were talking about the bullpen
along with the Orioles. The Oriolesand the Mariners have the best bullpens in
the American League. Sale has gotdarn near the best starting five too,
(55:06):
So I mean, you take alook next year. Oh my goodness.
Yeah, but the difference Bill inthe last month the bats have heated up,
goodness, and the pitching has beenthere all year, and that the
guys we saw a historic streak byJulio. Yeah, Julio, seventeen hits
and like four games or something likethat. And then you know, and
(55:27):
then the other guy I didn't mentionwas was the backup catcher who has been
hurt, Murphy, Tom Murphy, who was hitting the cover off the baseball
and he got hurt. He hadsome sort of was either a finger or
wrist issue. And he'll be backtoo. So that will add to the
depth of the team. And there'sBills Bullish, there's there's not a whole
lot of not a whole lot ofdeadweight on this team. And and they've
(55:52):
kind of trimmed the fan, ifyou will, and uh, this is
a legit baseball team now. Theyjust got to find a way to get
in and then then let you know, it's cool. The other day when
they had a lead and Luis Castiledid something what I always say, pictures
you get through forty seven straight fastballs, He's like, my fastball is good,
I've got a lead. I'm notmessing around. And he got to
(56:13):
go in at the top of thezone. And when he's throwing ninety seven
at the top of the zone, and sometimes there's you know, there's you
know, you gotta swing. Itlooks good and he's he's tough. I
mean, it's unbelievable. He's notjust a fastball pitcher, but he did
throw all those fastballs in a roweither a two seam or four seam or
something like that. I forget thetechnical terms, but yeah, they don't
(56:35):
issue a lot of walks that team, and I look at very closely.
They have a lot of game withone walk, twelve k's and stuff.
So yeah, so there's your SeattleMariners update. So I doesn't mind a
long segment when it's Mariner talks. So there's that too. Good luck to
the Mariners is the season is goinggreat for them at this point and winding
(56:59):
down to the play layoffs. Okay, uh sports shorts some selections, Bill,
What do you have going this weekend? Well, Friday, there's a
couple of races that I like Agood pick last week, didn't you I
forget Pirate Red, Yeah, dideverything but win. Yeah, exactly lost
the night to remember. But sixthrace eight claimer, it's a race that
(57:22):
I'm kind of want to try andbeat. You split tens who Vince made
us the five to two favorite ina field of seven. There's a couple
that interests me, but the oneI like the most is the three of
the Calvary's Kid lost to Olympic legendwho ran lights out in a win on
August the eleventh. The Calvary's Kidhad the rail kind of got you know,
sucked back to the tail of thefield, had to circle up wide,
(57:46):
was really running on nicely at theend, and I like, I
like that second place finish. He'sback in for eight. That was an
eight thousand dollar race he ran inlast time out. So in a race
that I'm gonna try and you splittens, it's a race that I will
be involved with if I was wageringthe Calvary's Kid at seven to two in
(58:07):
race six, and then in theseventh race, there's another at Justin Evans
Dropper the two looking for eight. As a nine year old, he's had
a lot of in the money finisheshere at Emerald Downs and hasn't gotten a
win this year. So I willgo with a blade and right training the
sixth State of the Union, whojust won a condition claiming race at eight
(58:27):
thousand and Blaine's running out of condition, so he's got a dropped down in
claiming price he won last time out, but the trouble line does not note
this. He was bumped around atthe break. He still overcame adversity to
win and I like him right backat the same distance of today's of that
race on Friday nights. So Stateof the Unions had a little bit of
(58:49):
arrest as well. At three toone in Vince's morning line in race seven,
very good. You know, Ithink I've got all these pet peas
in front of us for the wholeweekend. I think I've picked more Saturday
and Sunday races than Friday. Wow, go for Saturday and Sunday. I
know I didn't sound too confident lastweek, but I did give out General
Crook who won that made out one. Yes, and I wasn't too confident
(59:15):
really, but you want I didn'ttrand big Yeah. It was a contender
all the way around. Okay, naval Escort's got a ton of speed to
run at on Sunday. In thatrace number eight, it's a six and
a half furlongs. He's a toughold horse. He's won twice. It's
a non winners at two. Butif you're Washington Bread it's a non winners
(59:35):
at three, so he's got thatgoing for him as well. He's He's
faced a lot of good horses thisyear. Midnight Mojo the four year old
and naval Escort the five year oldshould get a really lively pace in that
eighth race. I'm gonna give navalEscort just a slight nod. Silvio Amador
stays up for David Martinez and thenon Saturday after noon, where is my
(01:00:02):
sheet? Saturday twilight? Saturday,Yeah, Saturday, right, this will
be at six o'clock the two yearold race. You know, Jennifer Nunneley
debuted that we got to drinking intwenty twenty one, first time starter one
and then we got beer on ice. Last year, first time starter ran
(01:00:22):
really well, ran second, andthen I think he got didn't he get
claimed for fifty? Yes, hedid have. So he's in this weekend
too. She's got a first timestarter in there By Dad's Cap, who
was a really good race horse outof a Malibu Moonmare that raced twice.
She did win a maiden special weightat Santa Anita. She's got two winners
(01:00:45):
from three previous starters. So Malibudreams six to one on your Morning Line,
the first time starter and a maidenspecial weight going five and a half
on Saturday. She's got the twowhole two year old Phillies with Kevin Radkey
gonna you know, I'm gonna playher. Of course, Spiteful Cat ran
really well and her debut Shelby Shortstopis kind of the consistency play in there.
(01:01:08):
But I'll go Malibu Dreams a firstor from trainer Jennifer Nunneley on Saturday
in that two year old race, and then more two year olds on Sunday.
Of course, I thought the favoriteslooked pretty good in their bill Nissa
with Rocco and Chancellor's Boom. Idid think that Howard Bellboard's Force a lante
(01:01:31):
he ran on a little bit inthat debut after being one of those two
year old first or detached early typeruns. Well, Howard's got a couple,
and there's another one in there thatran rim Rock Lake and Rimrock Lake
ran really well first and might geta trip and might be one that wants
to go six and a half. Here am I on the wrong billboard,
fellas, No mine might be onthe wrong billboard in there. Rim Rock
(01:01:53):
Lake. Yeah, I do rememberthat was July thirtieth, and as far
Nissa goes Grocco made a good point, I'd forgotten that that was a pretty
quick turnaround last time, yea forher when she when she ran out,
All things considered, that was apretty good effort. She put up against
you know, the best two yearold Philly on the grounds that we've seen.
And then Rosie Simpkins has got acouple of Phillies in there, Lutc
(01:02:15):
Gypsy and Betty Lutz. And Iknow LUTs C Gypsy didn't get a lofty
buyers speed figure, but when twoyear olds win from off the face and
the way she wanted she was,she had that race wrapped up in the
last sixteenth and Lutc Gypsy impressed mevisually, and and you know she's had
(01:02:36):
she'll have sixteen days off between herher maid and win and the race over
this weekend and the walk up JulieOle Philly. She's one I'm gonna definitely
have, probably definitely have her inmy top two, So she might be
one that might be interesting and alittle bit of her price, I'm with
you there. Yeah, she wasvery impressive as Rosie one with two first
(01:02:59):
time start that day. Okay, there's some selections. Trivia. Last question
was named the most recent time Iknew jockey to Emerald Downs was the leading
stakes jockey for that first season here. Okay, I didn't get any correct
answers. Ricky Frasier is the answer. In two thousand and four, his
(01:03:21):
first year here, he won eightstakes. Ben Russell also did it in
two thousand and one won six stakes, and Chris low seth kind of an
asterisk. Nineteen ninety six was ourfirst ever year, so it was his
first year here. He won sixstakes, coming down from Hastings. The
reason we asked that question is becauseCarlos Montalvo is tied for most stakes with
(01:03:44):
just what four remaining or five?Maybe yet? Four Washington Cup races in
the Godstein correct. Yeah, Carloshas three wins along with Kevin Radkey and
Jose Zannino, and this is hisfirst season here. So the new question
is this is an easier one.Which trainer has the most Washington Cup victories
(01:04:05):
most walk up wins for Emerald Downstrainer? Send your answers to trivia at
Emeraldowns dot com and hope to seeyou at the races. Thanks to Grant
