(00:28):
Mucosuit. Welcome to Horse Racing Northwest, a post Emerald Down season edition
(00:57):
of Horse Racing Northwest. Joe withthe Invins broun here at Emerald Downs.
Thanks for joining us. We'll betalking to a lot of Washington stuff and
not too far away from the BreedersCup. In fact, it's the fortieth
running of the Breeders Cup. Vinceand I think everybody in anybody interested in
(01:19):
thoroughbred racing back in the eighties whenthey heard the concept to begin in nineteen
eighty four, we're pretty excited.November tenth, nineteen eighty four at Hollywood
Park. Yeah. It of coursewe didn't have simulcasting in them those days,
and I had another job, butI was I think I'd just gotten
a VC on r something. Iwas looking forward to a racing home and
watching it that night, and itlived up to it everything and more right
(01:42):
off the bat. Yeah, that'sof course before simulcasting in the long Acre
Zerra. I remember going to aparty and we were doing little bets almost
every race on the Breeders Cup,and I went the next year in New
York nineteen eighty five. Fire Sweeperran in that for Jerry Paxton, had
the lead under Bill Shoemaker at thejust before the top of the stretch and
(02:07):
faded there against some really good horses. But and then you've worked so many
of them. I worked a bunchof them as Breeders' Cup newsfeed, just
great history. And then in eightysix it went to Santa Anita for the
first time, and in twenty twentythree, Santy this will be the leventh
time. Yeah, sant Anita hostedthe Breeders' Cup. Yeah, most of
any track, most of any track. It's November third and fourth, Friday
(02:28):
and Saturday this year November third andfourth, we'll have our next podcast will
be that week, either the Wednesdayor Thursday of Breeders Cup week. John
White will be joining us well herefrom Anthony's to Bill Bill Downs, our
track announcer will be joining us aswell on the Breeders Cup podcast Horse Racing
Northwest. So yeah, looking forwardto this year's Breeders Cup. We have
(02:52):
a little contest here at Emerald Downsaid. Shoot, it started back in
the nineties. We just draft horsesfrom the traditional eight races, and the
other six races can get involved assecondary picks that could get you some points
as well. And just kind oflooking over who might be some of the
(03:13):
big favorites this year. Idiomatic inthe Fillyan Mayor or the Distaff. She's
just beaten Nest real soundly in thelast two races. Yeah, that was
impressive last weekend. She'll be ashort price. Yeah. One of our
guests today Mark Glatt mm hmm,Washington Lad, he'll have a horse that's
(03:34):
got to get a pretty good lookin the sprint. I would think Doctor
Scheibel in the sprint, of course, is one of the original seven races.
Yeah, he just wont Santa aNita and was beaten like a nose
a couple of years ago in theBreeders' Cups. Oh, just a real
tough beat was that last year toLoja West? It was Delmar two years
ago twenty twenty one a Loja Westgot him in the last jump, just
(03:55):
as cruciating defeat, but running secondin a two million dollar race, still
got a pretty good little yeah potthere, And it looks like Mark's got
that horse right where they want himfor three weeks from now. Okay,
Yeah, Mark Glatt joining us.So is Matt Dinnerman, who replaced Robert
(04:15):
Geller at Emerald Downs back in twentyfifteen. Yeah, yeah, it was
Robert called Striker PhD's twenty fourteen mile, and then Matt called it the next
year and Matt had some big shoesto fill there, and just right off
the bat, Matt did a greatjob filling in and proof of that well,
(04:36):
well, we'll be talking to himhere in a few minutes, but
Matt has a real exciting career going, Joe, Yeah, we'll go over
that story how he became a trackannouncer and he's his career is just on
the upswing from recent announcements. SoMatt Dinnerman, Mark Glatt joining us on
horse Racing Northwest this week. Yeah, just getting to the breeders cup.
(05:00):
The juveniles. You know, alot of times there's a juvenile that's just
super dominant, I know, thatPrince of Monaco is three for three,
but he barely won the del MarFuturity over a maiden Mooth just won the
American Pharaoh. He was pretty impressivelast year. He was from off the
pace, so I got to behonest, I have you know, it's
(05:21):
will me too. Time to startbuckling down here pretty quick on the Breeders
Cup, and as you mentioned,we'll have that draft and by the time
we have the Breeders Cup edition,we'll well knows are Yeah, He's and
Q's a little better here on theBreeders Cup, but nothing like flight Line,
who was essented to be the numberone pick last year, and he
(05:41):
did come through for a five pointvictory. So Breeders Cup coming up November
third and fourth. If you wantto come to Emerald Downs, it's first
come, first served on the fifthfloor for seating. There are suites available
one thousand dollars minimum to rent asuite on Breeders Cup day. Of course,
that includes food and you can getmore information by calling our group events.
(06:08):
Call Emerald Downs at to eight eightseven thousand, ask for group events.
One of the four suites has beenbooked, but that is a sweet
day to spend the Breeders Cup onthe sixth floor at Emerald Downs. We'll
have the big screen on and youcan take a look out there for a
nice picture as well. So BreedersCup Friday and Saturday coming up on the
(06:33):
third and fourth of November. Well, our meat is over and Washington Horsemen
have dispersed our top trainer, JustinEvans, and you know, looking back,
he's really been a tremendous addition toWashington racing. Jeff Metz came in
here a few years back, aboutten years ago to twenty thirteen. Yeah,
(06:55):
and he rattled off three consecutive trainingtitles, so he was a fantastic
addition to Washington racing. But JustinEvans and his family being ubiquitous around our
one hundred and seventy acres, andof course he was a dominant winner of
the training title, and he alsowas the leading owner and he had another
ownership group in the top six orso. So he was a really strong
(07:18):
force and great addition to our Washingtonracing this year. He was he you
know, it would have been hardto think of the meat without him in
terms of the you know, horses, So it was, Yeah, he
was great, And you mentioned JeffMets, we got to congratulate him too.
He got the job as stable superintendentat sant Anita, So that's an
excellent, big job and Jeff willbe quite great at that. He's a
(07:40):
good people person and you know that'sthat's what that job is, is trying
to keep horsemen happy. And youknow, you got a lot of demand
for stalls down there, so that'llbe a big job for Jeff. And
I understand his daughter will still traina few horses, Zoe, and so
they'll still have their hand in that. But yeah, as far as Justin
goes, really hoping Justin makes itback here next year too. Yeah,
(08:03):
he is starting horses at Delta Downsin Vinton, Louisiana. Today. This
is day number four at Delta Downs. He's got several horses in, including
Kiss Ride Goodbye, who has athree race winning streak because she runs today
talking about Friday, Friday, Octoberthirteenth, So Evan's down there. Mike
Bubba Balin took a few horses toDelta and so did Mike Pierce and all
(08:30):
are planning on coming back at thispoint. So good luck to Justin Evans
and yeah, we'll get Jeff metsOn in the future again. He just
was great for our program and helast couple few years he trained some Emerald
Racing Club horses. And Scott Tubbs'sassistant is planning on coming back. I
guess you mentioned. Yeah, heplans to come back next year and support
(08:52):
of a few owners, and bythe time we do the next podcast would
be pretty close to talking about dates, yeah, for next year, but
those are certainly being kicked around inthe planning stages, so we hope to
have some good news there too.Yeah, so dates for twenty twenty four.
We do figure to open on KentuckyDerby Day. I believe that's kind
of been the general consensus around here. That's yeah, I think that's pretty
(09:16):
well going to happen. And Ithink isn't the Derby on the first next
year? I don't know. Icouldn't tell you that I think it is,
but anyway, yeah, first Saturdayin May. We do know that.
So, yeah, Horsemen Horses outof state. Hey, Blaine Wright's
outstanding three year old who was adouble stakes winner and our top three year
old at our twenty twenty three meeting. He is still going good down in
(09:39):
the state of California. Boy,I'll tell you they had a great race
last week. He was going tosay his name Older Horses and the Harris
Farm Stakes at Fresno six for Along'sClovis Connection by Vronsky out of a perfect
mandate mayor named La Darning made itseven for ten lifetime in four in a
row. All he did was turnedback Top Harbor in the stretch, and
(10:03):
Top Harbor was three and a quartersclear of Larry's Legend and took down the
Harris farm Stakes, earned a ninetythree buyer. That's a career high six
furlongs and one oh nine flat.Great race down the stretch, Joe,
those two really went at it.It looked like Top Harbor had him measured,
but Clovis Connection, William Aunt TornGeorgie came back and got him at
the wire. Great race for boththose horses. We all know Top Harbor's
(10:26):
quality, so anytimes you beat him, it's it's you've earned a victory.
He's got a string of first andseconds that's pretty long. Now he's all
racehorse. And you know the thingabout Clovis Connection was really cool is his
versatility. We saw it here inthe Auburn Stakes when he shot up the
rail under Kevin Radkey and went sixfurlongs in one, O, seven and
two, and then he came slightlyoff the pace to beat Lloyd's logic with
(10:48):
that big move around the turn, then goes to Santa Rosa, stretches out
on turf and goes wire to wireis at Santa Rosa. Yes, it
was the Rupert Robert to pray Derbyand I was a seventy five thousand dollars
race. But to go nine mileeight mile of sixteenth excuse me on turf
and then back to six furlongs forthe Harris Farms against older horses, against
(11:11):
older horses. He's a good horse, you know. And I don't want
to jump the gun here, butit certainly has the profile of a horse
that, you know, as anolder horse, could fit in something like
the Long Acres mile. Uh huhuh huh. Most definitely Clovis connection for
Blaine Wright on a roll in twentytwenty three. That's a good one.
(11:31):
And let's go over the top tenWashington Bred leading earners as we just have
a couple months plus remaining in twentytwenty three. Zabra Cadabra is number one.
He has been for a lot ofmonths. He's made one hundred and
sixty grand. He's the son ofHarbor the Gold, a six year old
who started his career here at agetwo, ran three times, did not
(11:52):
break his maiden, and breeder ownerFrank Sample took him east. He just
is aware racing all around the country. And this horse has thrived at Laurel
in the state of Maryland, andeven at Delaware. He's been unplaced in
his last two. One was astake, but he has three wins and
(12:13):
two seconds from seven starts. Onehundred and sixty grand for Zabra. Cadabra
now a six year old, andSample was aware of the long Acres mile
this year. It was a longship and he's just been doing so well
back east. He kept him backthere and by the way he was I
believe he was number four in Washingtonbread earnings last year as well, just
(12:35):
under one hundred thousand. So he'sup to three sixty seven in his career.
You know those Harbor the Golds, they we didn't see a lot of
amount of state, but when theyran in California, this one their runners
everywhere top Harbor. Yeah, soI don't want to hear this that he
was only a state sire type thing. They could those things ran and they
ran anywhere. And number two onthe Washington Bread earnings list is also a
son of Harbor the Gold. Hisname is my Harbor's Dream. He's won
(12:58):
four race this year. He's wonat Santa Nita, he's won at Monmouth,
he's won at Delaware. He wasclaimed on closing day at Santa Anita
back in the early summer. Andhe's gone back east and he's three for
six back east. He's got onehundred and thirty grand in earnings. Another
son of Harbor of the Gold. Then it's a sena of Philly by Coastguard
(13:18):
out of Market Formula, who hasbeen a good broodmare. She's a daughter
of the Howard Belboir Spiitan Malice, who was a multiple stakes winner here at
Emerald Downs in our early years.Belboir trained Spike. That's the one this
way back. No, that's Malicea forethought. Yes, that's out of
that same running line, probably withthat name. Yeah. So Asena just
(13:41):
won at Remington. She's up toeighty six thousand. By the way,
our Ownership Group bought her full youngerBryce Coastguard market formula at the recent Wtboa
sale. Steve BULLOCKALP. The TrustyCoast Guards had a good year at Emerald
Downs. They really did, gotedged out for most wins by Harvard the
Gold Bodenheimer. He's in on Sundayat Keenland and one hundred and forty thousand
(14:05):
dollars allowance. He's four wins anda second from five starts this year.
He was Washington Horse of the Yearthree years ago at age two. Of
course, we remember he ran inthe Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and he
broke poorly that day in Wesley Ward'sbig favorite won that I know. But
Bodenheimer having a great five year oldseason for val Lund. By the way,
(14:28):
val Lund, I think she's thetrainer of Asina as well. Is
that is correct? Yeah, yeah, So she's got numbers three and four
loosed. His Whiz number five wonthe Governors and of course the Muckleshoot Tribal
Classic. Third in the mile. This year he's at eighty three thousand.
Blazing Bella Blue just behind her byfifty behind him by fifty bucks. She
(14:50):
was tremendous again this year Blazing BellaBlue eighty two thousand and nine fifty.
Terry's boys been running in some goodclass races at Golden Gate freight Line from
the Wtboa sale a year ago.Steve Bullock runner partly owned by Joe.
Yeah, and he had a reallygood year. Didn't make the the Gottstein
(15:15):
just a little bit of a musclepull, but he won two of four
starts in sixty four thousand Torpedo awaymiss Parkside and then joining Joining in that
group just today was Huge Bigley whowon at Keenland. He ran in our
mile last year, as you remember, I do remember Huge big Lee.
Yeah, a horselight to go fartherthan a mile, I think he did.
(15:35):
And he didn't figure much in themile of twenty twenty two, won
by Sluice to his whiz, buthe did win at Keenland today a forty
five thousand dollars perse. He's upto top ten earnings as well as he
was a big earner last year withsome wins at Colonial and I think Keenland
or Churchill. So there's a lookat the top ten. Hey, A
(15:58):
lot of great information at Emeraldowns dotcom as well as you finished up the
news and notes for the year rightafter closing day, which was on the
seventeenth. But just really good infothere, Vince. Thanks, yep,
enjoy it. And this was thefirst year, you know, a little
bit of a negative note, Thisis the first year that Washington bread's weren't
(16:19):
the most frequent winners at an EmeraldDowns meeting. That's right, Yeah,
Kentucky led the way, then California, Washington a close third, and actually,
you know, the latter half ofthe meet they did improve quite a
bit. But you know, weall know the reasons why. You know,
we don't breed as many horses uphere as we used to, and
a lot more horses coming in fromout of state. But I'm still bullish
(16:41):
on wabbreads, you bet. Sothat is a look at a little more
of a follow up and a littlebit of a preview of the Breeders Cup
Again. Matt Dinnerman Mark Glad aregoing to join us on horse Racing Northwest.
We'll have our sports shorts and triviaas well in our final segment,
(17:06):
and a couple other tidbits of information, some sad news to report in the
industry. Ray mccanna passed away lastweekend, the older brother of Tim mccanna,
Tim ofcourse of Washington Hall of Fametrainer and the mccanna family so well
known in this state. Ray wasthe oldest of Tim Daniel and Carrie Daniel.
(17:29):
Of course, Boone mccanna operates downthe Stretch Ranch outside of Spokane to
help soldiers into home rehome retired thoroughbreds. Ray was sixty four. He brief
illness, found out about it rightaround the end of July, and unfortunately
(17:51):
did pass away. Ray was hadquite the full life. He leaves behind
his daughter, Mallory. He wasa four year starter at the University of
Idaho in football, was second teamAll Conference one year, just a tough
player and went to Gonzaga. Likehis brothers and sisters. Got into the
(18:12):
gas and oil industry through his uncle, who was like the number one driller
for Exxon. So he learned theoil and gas industry and most specifically in
cleaning oil refinery. So he traveledthe world United States, France, Australia,
all over the Mid East and openedhis own company, Clean Concept,
(18:36):
All quite a while ago. Hesold that fairly recently and continued to work
for them, but made a goodliving in that business. And as far
as horse racing, his father Danwas a trainer and a teacher and administrator
in the Spokane area, and Dan'sfather was a trainer as well, so
(18:56):
it's in the family. Race startedtraining a little bit himself after Tim had
already started. Tim a couple ofyears younger than Ray, and he did
alright. He won races at playfor Yakama Long Acres, but he's really
been fully involved as an owner sincethe eighties. He was part owner of
Queen Oldo, who was a threetime Washington champion. Currently was involved with
(19:21):
ten horses as owner along with thetrained by his brother Tim mccorus and some
of his partners are well known aroundhere, Al Hodge, Charlie Dunn,
Freddie DeSimone, Gordy Jarney and justlived a full life. His main residence
was over there in Port Ludlow, but he also had a place in Idaho
and really involved in the game andArcandolen says. Of course, to the
(19:47):
mccanna family, their oldest sibling,Ray mccanna, passed away at age sixty
four. Nancy Ross also left us. Nancy worked for the Wtboa in the
late nineties early two thousand, buther and her husband ran Medallion Farm outside
of Olympia way back in the eightiesand they stood even the seventies, and
(20:10):
they stood Prince Alert just the time, Introductivo some stallions that did well,
especially just the time. And thenafter that, after she split with her
husband, she was the farm secretaryat Rainier Stables and they were really going
to Boy did they bread a lotof horses up there de Wayne Moore's Reiner
(20:30):
Stables. She was a farm secretarythere and has worked with the Washington Thoroughbred
Farm Managers Association. She passed awayrecently at age eighty two. Nancy Ross
has a daughter and a granddaughter leavingbehind there. So our condolence is there.
(20:52):
So we will take a break andwe'll come back with our first guest
here on horse Racing Northwest. It'llbe track announcer Matt Dinnerman will be right
back on the show, mucosit. It doesn't matter if you love craps,
blackjack machines, or dining on thefinest Asian, American and Salish cuisines.
(21:17):
It doesn't matter what you do orwhere you're coming from. Mucosuit. What
you do is all at Muckleshoe,an easy drive from wherever you are.
All roads lead to Muckleshoe Mucosuit quartermile ago in the mile, New Cito
(21:38):
being taken on by Alert Bay andAlert Bay comes rolling off the turn,
but Striker PhD is flying like aFerrari on the outside. Alert Bay is
gonna have to deal with Striker PhDwho takes the lead and takes off Striker
PhD by two and a half.Alert Base Sammy Mandivil coming from out of
(21:59):
nowhere. Striker PhD has won itfor Washington. He wins the Long Acres
Mile from Sammy Man de Volvert payand then new See Toafin is fourth.
He did it for Washington. TheWashington bred Warrior has won the Long Acres
Mile again. That was the twentyfifteen Long Acres Mile won by Striker PhD.
(22:22):
His second win in a row,but the first year of a new
job for one young Matt Dinnerman, track announcer and track announcer at Emerald Downs.
And he did a fantastic job inhis first Long Acres mile, and
he has gone on to do more. Of course, those of us that
follow Racing. Know he's been theGolden Gate track announcer and TV personality there
(22:48):
for several years. And there's morenews on the career of Matt Dinnerman as
we welcome him to Horse Racing Northwest. Matt, Good, afternoon, afternoon,
Joe and Vince, how you guysdoing, Hey, great man,
doing really good. End of aseason. You know, we got things
done up here, had had somereally good things to talk about, and
(23:11):
let's just get it out first ofall. In twenty twenty three, this
year, you're going to be callingthe races at a new track. Tell
us that track, and let's startcelebrating. Absolutely. The celebration has begun
and we will continue it. Goingto be moving to Hot Springs, Arkansas
(23:34):
and wintering there at lovely Oakland Park, which of course is not only a
top winter destination for racing, butreally just the top destination for racing in
general all year round. Some greathorses, great human connections. The purses
are obviously very sizable, and it'sa dream come true. I mean,
when you get a job like EmeraldDown's Golden League, if you want to
(23:56):
be an announcer and you get jobslike those, those are dreams jobs,
and this is another dream job,Oaklawn Park, And obviously the racing there
is top notch, and the community, the whole community loves racing. So
I'm very, very excited to bea part of it. And I called
my first graded steak in the LongAcres a mile and strike a PhD one.
(24:18):
And now at Oakland I get tocall my first grade one. I'm
really excited. Oh you better believeit. Congratulations, man, we were
we knew you were in the running. I know you you invent speak fairly
often, and you know, justwe're so happy to hear that you got
the job. You've done a fantasticwork at Golden Gate, but we all
(24:38):
do know that that's coming to anend. And you don't even have to
feel guilty about You're not even dumpingthem, because racing is going to end
there. I use that word kindof flippantly, but you know you have
some great memories at Golden Gate aswell, Matt. Absolutely. I mean
I've called races there for six yearsnow, and wow, it's a really
(24:59):
good horses. I'd be a lotof really good friends, just like I
made an emerald, and you twoare my friends and sigh in the truck
there, and he's my buddy, and Carl and you remember all these people.
And I think that's the thing thatwhen you leave a race track,
those are the things you remember most. You remember the races, you remember
watching those races. But I thinkthe things you remember most are the good
(25:23):
times you have with the people inthat community, because, as you guys
know, racing is very much afamily and a community. So I think
leaving Goldendee, the most really I'mgoing to miss there is the people you
know, Matt. When you cameup here in twenty fifteen, we didn't
know a whole lot about you.I think Sophia McKee deserves a lot of
(25:45):
the credit for finding you. Andbut it became pretty obvious to guys like
myself and Joe that this young manhas an aptitude for calling races. And
on top of that, is itpossible, Joe to have too much enthusiasm
and one's job? Because if itis, Matt's got it. But I
mean that in the most positive way. I know you do. He he's
out at the barns in the morning, he knows the anatomy of horses.
(26:07):
He's got a great gift for callinghim. He interacts well with people,
he does the social media. Imean, he just really really gets it.
So, I mean, just ourhighest praise to you, Matt.
You really earned and deserved this opportunitydown there. And I must say from
a personal standleh me enjoy Me andJoe really follow Ookland, so this is
great for us too. Yeah.Yeah, well, Matt, if you
if you took over our training dayreport, it would take half the time
(26:30):
because you know every horse on thedarn you got out there and I think
that, yeah that's so and soyeah okay, okay, yeah, really
okay, yeah that's right, lookslike them. Okay, But Matt knew
I mean he picked those horses outand of course I would verify with the
trainer was okay to use it.But he knew the horses like some of
our trainers did, and he wasalways at the backside. Yeah, let's
(26:52):
go over that story on how Mattbecame a track announcer. Matt, you
practiced on the roof. I meanyou had an inkling that maybe that would
be a vocation that you might wantto get into. Correct I did,
yes, So I was practicing onthe roof at seeing Anita Park, and
I actually made it basically an internshipwhere I would practice calling races as my
(27:15):
senior year internship project, going tosee and Anita practicing calling races and a
couple other things. But I alsowhile working in the press box at Delmar,
I was able to practice. Thereare boots in the press box at
Delmar, empty rooms, a fewof them, and I was able to
go into a booth with my phoneand record and practice, And I just
(27:37):
really fell in love with watching theraces. Not only do I have a
strong passion for beating on the stractedscene races, I just can't get enough
of that, but being able towatch a race and describe how it's playing
out, and being able to describethat to the betting public and the listeners,
and of course, as you guysknow, it's very much an art
when you're good at it. Ithink all of these really good announcers it's
(28:00):
an art for them. So I'vereally fallen in love with the art of
calling a race. And Vince shesaid it, Sophia McKee. I mean
she was basically like my fairy godmotherin a way, because she was really
going to back for me when Isent in my tapes when the press release
had come out and Emerald Downs waslooking for a new announcer. I didn't
think I had a shot at it, really, but I decided to go
(28:22):
ahead and send the tapes in andyou just never know. And next thing,
you know, I got to calla couple of races up there.
You folks flew me up and thedream began right there, and it's just
been an absolute thrill of a rideever since. Okay, well he filled
in a gap for me right there. Matt did by saying that he saw
press release that Emerald Downs was lookingfor an announcer. So I wasn't quite
(28:42):
sure, but Matt, so,Vince and I and probably five or six
others, we were sitting in theconference room and it was time to listen
to some tapes, and I distinctlyremember listening to a few and including a
couple people that we did know whothey were. And there was a woman
from Australia. And then we comealong to this this next one and we
(29:07):
hear a stretch run and we allkind of look at each other. Yeah,
yeah, that's not bad, youknow, that's not bad. I
didn't know who it was. Yeah, we didn't know who it was going.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, hesounds fine, you know, And
so that was the verdict was, well, get him up here this week.
You came up that very Saturday, didn't you. I came up that
Saturday. I mean I think itwasn't even twenty four hours before calling the
(29:32):
race. I got a call.I actually was calling races at seeing Anita
that day over my tape recorder onthe roofs. I was driving home and
I got a call and I lookedat the caller ID and it said Auburn,
Washington. And I basically thought tomyself, where here comes the here
comes the call where they say thanks, but no thanks, you know,
because the press release actually said we'relooking for an experienced race caller, and
(29:56):
even though I didn't have any experience, I wanted to get my name out
there. And Sofia was on theother end and she said, you know,
we'd love to have you come uptomorrow and call a couple of races.
So with that, I darted toSan Diego, believe it or not,
my Chatman University where I went toschools probably forty five minutes from Sienna
Nita. I decided not to goback there. I went straight to San
(30:18):
Diego with my mom and dad andmade sure I could find the nicest clothes
I could to get ready for thebig day in the following afternoon. And
you know the rest is history, you bet it is. And you have
just done great. And course, you know working with Robert Geller right there
that first day. Robert such afine human being as well as one of
(30:41):
the top easily one of the toprace callers. I mean, we just
still marvel at Roberts call on allthose big fields would bind and I'm sure
you do too, But learning withhim had to be great. And the
Golden Gate opportunity came up. Andnow Oaklawn Park for Matt Dinnerman, it
is just fantastic that you'll be doing. I think they run four days a
(31:03):
week, now, don't they.I think they went to four. I
think they go three and then maybein December, and I think they go
up to four later on in themeat which that's what they did last year.
Not sure about this year, butthey start in early December. So,
Matt, did you say you're goingto call through November? Is it
down in the Bay Area? Yes, So I'll be calling my last day
(31:26):
is November twenty seventh, which isa Monday, because in the fall meet,
just like the past summer meet, here, we go Saturday through Monday,
So I'll be calling Monday, Novembertwenty seventh, and then the following
day, November twenty eighth, Itake the plane to the South. So
it'll only be my second time, guys, setting foot in the state of
(31:47):
Arkansas. The only other time Idid it was when I went to interview
in August. You know, whenyou mentioned that interview, you had said
it went pretty well, but youstill weren't quite sure right until you got
the official word absolutely yes. Andwhen you go to a job interview,
you have a sense of how itwent. And I felt really good about
(32:08):
it. I thought we were allon the same page. We had really
good worport. You know, atit's like Oakland Park especially, You've got
some really good candidates that would wantall there, and plenty of people that
are at a high level in termsof their professional So I was able to
go to the interview and feel goodabout it. But at the same time,
(32:29):
you don't really know until you getthe call and the offer. So
when I did, I had towait a little bit. But when I
did, I was over the moon. Yeah. And you're gonna have to
learn a whole bunch of new silksand stuff down there too, right,
I mean, for all in theraces, a lot of Steve Asmus and
horses. He's good at that stuff. We know that he is. Yeah,
we're not gonna worry about that.Yeah, Matt, I went.
(32:51):
I went through Equabase, and I'vebeen looking at the leading owners and I've
been watching replays to try to figureout what the silks are. So I'm
starting my homework already, mony ofit, but I've already started. Not
surprised. Not surprised on that.Yeah. Well, Oakland Park is on
the main drag in Hot Springs,Arkansas. The Downtown Show and his buddies
(33:12):
go there every year, Matt.I've been back there several times. Oh
wow, And yeah, I forgetthe name of that street, but it
runs right into the downtown. It'sthe main drag. Downtown's about a mile
away and really really cool little towntoo, Hot Springs, Arkansas. And
as you set off the top thatthe community, the state really embraces racing.
At Oakland it's just a real destinationpoint and Hot Springs is a destination
(33:39):
town too. One hundred and fifteenthousand dollars made in special weights this year,
is that what we heard? Well, one hundred and fifteen thousand main
specialts, I think one hundred andforty thousand first level allowances, And there's
been a big boost in the stateschedule purses. The Arkansas Derby at one
point five million this year, theRebels at one fifty thousand. Wow.
(34:04):
So I mean, obviously the stateloves racing, but the money's there to
attract some really nice horses and Joe, now that you know the announcer there,
there's no excuse you got to getout there in twenty twenty three,
Well, we'll put that on thelist for sure. Did you get Did
you get to see the announcers booth? I don't think I might. I
(34:25):
did. It's a very nice booth. Actually, you know, it used
to be like a phone booth formany decades when Harry Wallace was calling it,
even when Pello and Frank Mirmiani werethere for their season at Oakland.
It's a really small booth, butI think a couple of years ago they
extended it. So now they've gotsort of that area where you call the
race, which is still a prettysmall little area, but it extends and
(34:49):
it's a really nice booth. It'sgot a couple of couches in there,
it's got a desk in a computer. It's not on the line like it
is at Golden Gate or Emeralds. So I'm going to have to get you
for that angle a little bit,but that shouldn't be an issue. And
no, the good news is Ithink they do have an eater up there.
When it gets a little chili willbe able to use that. Yeah,
(35:10):
they'll have you. They'll have afew days like that, but just
a yeah, super big focus onOaklawn in the winter months. They've extended
their meat the last couple of yearsto start in December. Matt will start
there and Matt, yeah, theBay area with the just tremendous tradition,
and they're going to continue on untilI believe next June. And I mean
(35:36):
no official rumblings on what's going on, maybe at the at the end of
Golden Gates run, but hopefully somebodytakes up the mantle there. I mean,
Sacramento's a name that's been tossed out. I don't know if you have
any opinions on that, but itshould be nice if if thoroughbred racing continued
on a strong circuit in northern calI think really the key there is keeping
(36:04):
a certain level of horse a spotin the state where they can compete.
I think that's really the key, because Santa and Nenito is only going to
have so many horses that can competeat that level. And you see a
lot of horses at Golden Gate.Part of the reason they're there is because
the owners, the breeders are supportingNorthern California racing, but they also understand,
look, there's certain horses that don'tfit southern California in the breeding industry,
(36:28):
the breeding industry, I saw astaff the other day. I think
eighty percent of breeding in California isin the northern part of the state,
and if there's not racing in thenorthern part of the state, I think
the breeding industry is going to suffera bit. So I would say there's
a lot of uncertainty as to thefuture. You could say that about any
state in racing really in our business. But I think the key there is
(36:52):
trying to figure out how do wekeep horses in the state that maybe aren't
quite fast enough quite frankly to bedown south, because you get plenty of
those. Yep, that's true. And whenever a track goes away, you're
certainly going to lose a lot ofsmall breeders in the area, the hinterland.
(37:14):
But as you threw out that statwow, that's that's a big number
on breeders north of Santa Anita andso forth. So let's hope for the
best in northern cal And again,a super job there, Matt Dinnerman,
the new track announcer at Oakland Park, starting that segment of his career in
December. And again we're just sohappy for you, Matt. You bet,
(37:37):
Matt. Yeah, and congratulations againand we trust us up here in
the Northwest. We'll be watching andfollowing you with pride this winter. Yep,
that's that's for sure. Well, everybody in the Northwest has been very
supportive since they will fund it.I remember going in there, and and
in all honesty, I was prettyscared going up to northern California. I'm
(37:58):
sorry the Pacific Northwest because I didn'thave any experience. But you you've been
to the whole team and the wholecommunity took me in as one of theirs,
and it's been a great experience.I mean, I couldn't imagine sitting
here with you guys years down theline. If I was sitting with you
at Emerald at Mama Storetini's have anItalian dinner after the races, and I
(38:20):
could tell you, Hey, inabout eight nine years, I'll be at
Oakland Park. I mean, Iwouldn't have shreamped of that. So let
me tell you, Matt r andyou guys have been very supportive and I
really really appreciate it. We'll alwaysremember it. Yeah, I appreciate it,
Matt. But me you may nothavevisured, but I know me and
Joe and are are little talks. We saw some good things in your future.
It was pretty obvious you were goingplaces, so you were doing just
(38:44):
fine. And one thing we loveabout Oakland two is you'll have a lot
of crowd support down there, soyou'll have a lot of fans in your
corner cheering for you. That's rightagain, Can I appreciate it? Yeah?
Yeah, No, Matt. Yourtotal involvement, the time you spent
on the backside and conversing with horsemenand out for training and just enjoying it,
(39:07):
just embracing the whole game. Thatis a huge feather in your cap
as far as your likability and yourinterest and your higher ability. You're there.
You made it the next stage anyway, Oakland Park for Matt Dinnerman.
Matt, happy holidays to you andit's good be a fun one this year.
(39:30):
Career change for the better. Andagain all congratulations. Thanks Matt,
Thank you, Joe and Vince. Thanks guys so much, and I'll see
you in Hot Springs hopefully see yourother later. All right, thank you.
Matt Dinnerman joining us on horse racingNorthwest just a super move in his
(39:51):
career up to track announcer at oaklannYeah, he did a fantastic job here.
It was a pretty short stay,as it turns out, took over
in twenty fifteen. He had twofull seasons here, so about twenty sixteen
and twenty seventeen. Yeah, that'sright. He called the twenty seventeen mile
Goldbrush Dancer for John Parker. Yes, and you know, to segue into
(40:14):
our next guest, when his horsewon the Long Acres mile, you were
the announcer. Yeah, that wasa little different day. Just before we
take a break. We haven't gottoo negative on this thing, but you
know, we need to step itup around the country. Vince and I
were just talking about it. That'swhy I'm bringing it up. But we
(40:37):
do a good job of shooting therace with our camera here at Emerald Downs.
Our pan cameraman does a really finejob, Kenny for most of the
year. He took i think justthe last weekend off. But you know,
as a viewer out there, andwhat is it, it's got to
be close to ninety percent of peoplewatching the race or watching on a screen
(40:58):
a monitor, Oh yeah, it'sgot a yeah, and they can only
see what's going on as what thepan cameraman shows them. And so many
tracks and even big tracks they tightenup too much in that last sixteenth of
a mile, and what's going onbehind it? You know, is this
horse still coming on or you knowwhat's happening? Well, and you mentioned
(41:20):
ninety percent of the money or ninetypercent of the money is wagered, waces
are watched on screen, A lotof the money is depending on who not
only wins, but of course theminor awards. So yeah, I mean
everybody's watching, and you know it'san art. I mean, you've widened
out at a certain time, putthe leader over on the right side of
the picture and widen out. Andit takes some practice. But I'm really
(41:44):
surprised about how many tracks, evenbigger tracks, do not shoot race as
well. So you know what mypet peeve is on this too, is
after the race. To me,there's nothing more important than let's get the
not only the result, but let'sget the odds up. You know,
let's say the six was sixteen toone and the five was five. We
(42:05):
need to know that stuff right away, sooner rather than later. And many
tracks, even a lot of thebig ones, you wait and you wait
and you wait, you know, and to get that info. There are
people betting these races. Yeah, and that should be a rudimentary thing.
And you know, some tracks getJoe, I think mainly because of your
influence here that you've helped teach itthe right way and to be done,
(42:28):
you know. And it's that mostof the employees are willing to do it
if they're showed the right way todo it. Yeah, we've always done
it well. California does it well. Belmont Park. They put the odds
up right away or Aqueduct right now. But a lot of tracks don't.
They got all their colorful replays andgraphics. But you know, especially with
(42:49):
odds changing the way they do morethan ever here the last couple of years,
you've met even more, even morereason for that information to be up
there immediately. It's I do likethe tracks that also give a quick pan
of the odds too after the race, you know, and only get the
results up, but just show whatthe odds were on all of them.
That's they're really queer. No,but all of them. You want to
(43:12):
know I was going to play inthe nine? Would he end up going
off? Yeah? Would the favoritego off at? And would my horse
go off at yeah? This issimple stuff, And like you said,
it's just it's it's a lot ofplaces they have the ability to do that
very easily with just someone showing them, Hey, this is what we need
to do right after the race, and then we'll get it done. But
you're right, Joe, Okay,Well we'll take a short time out here
(43:35):
and come back with the trainer.Mark Glatt Auburn native Mark Klatt here on
horse racing Northwest macOS. It doesn'tmatter if you love craps, blackjack machines,
or dining on the finest Asian,American and Salish cuisines. It doesn't
matter what you do or where you'recoming from macOS. What you do is
(44:00):
all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive. From wherever you are, all roads
lead to Muckleshoe mucosuit. They're atthe top of the stretch at speed Boat
Beach and Doctor Schivell aer head andhead. Doctor Schivell just in front speed
Boat Beach, and here's Fort Braggfinishing strongly in the center of the racetrack.
(44:23):
Doctor Chivell and speed Boat Beacher, head and head coming for the wire,
Doctor Chevel or speed Boat Beach. Here's the line. Doctor Chivel has
won the sant Anita Sprint Championship again. Doctor Chivel on top in the Santa
Anita Sprint Championship recently at the GreatRace Place. And Doctor Schivell well known
(44:47):
around North America as a top sprinter, and it looks like he is on
track toward another Breeders Cup at SantaAnita. His trainer Mark Klatt, joins
us here on horse Racing Northwest.Mark, good afternoon, Hello everyone,
(45:07):
nice to be with you. Goodto have you on Mark. In fact,
we were just doing some Long Acresstuff the other day. We'll just
start off with that. We've gota lot to talk about. But there's
that famous picture of you with yourgirlfriend on closing day in long Acre's history
September twenty first, nineteen ninety two. And I think you took the walk
(45:29):
around the track that evening, didn'tyou. Yeah, we sure did.
It was certainly, you know,a very very very very tough moment.
You know, I grew up thereLong Acres, a lot of great times
there and you know, to bethere when it closed was one of the
(45:50):
pretty hard times. Yeah, thatwas a real emotional time and evening for
sure. So many people walk thetrack and again there was a pretty famous
picture of Mark there. Mark theson of Ron Glatt, who did was
a fantastic horseman, first over thereat Playfair and in the Long Acres era
(46:10):
as well, and still a horsemanin southern cal Mark has taken over Vince
and he has really had an outstandingcareer. Yeah, listen to some of
these numbers. Mark, I thinkis up to eleven and eighty seven wins
over forty four million dollars in pursesat the current San Anita meet. He's
(46:31):
nine for twenty two. But Markis a local guy. He grew up
I think on Lee Hill just eastof Auburn, up on a five acre
ranch. And Mark, when youwon a Long Acres Mile with Law Biden
Citizen twenty nineteen, I know thatwas a big deal for you. You've
(46:52):
won a lot of graded steaks Gradetwos, grade ones, but Law Biden
Citizen that took you back home, didn't it? Yeah? Sure? Did
you know? It was locally basedownership group that have been with me for
a number of years that had ownedthe Law Biden Citizen and growing up as
a kid, you know, mydad never really got a lot of opportunities
(47:15):
to to even have a starter inthe Long Acres Mile, but it was
the signature race of the Northwest andalways a race that you know that I
wanted to try and win at somepoint. Had tried a couple on a
couple of other occasions prior to LawBiden Citizen. I think Boyette was second
(47:37):
either the year before or two yearsbefore that, and was able to was
able to knock that off of myoff of my list of things to do,
so to speak, Yeah, Mark, you know, kind of a
stoic demeanor about him, for sure, but yeah, the heart had to
be going at a good rate whenyou won the mile, A thrilling finish
(48:00):
law Biden citizen, got the jobdone for the Schneid Gary and Jerry and
Gail Schneider and Dan Agnew and JohnZitco local people, and yeah, coming
back to the Northwest to win andagain, as Vince said, just just
a tremendous last ten years for you. I just briefly noted that you have
(48:21):
been well in the top fifty intrainer earnings the last four seasons and this
year number thirty four nationally. Thatis nationally North America. That is fantastic.
And you know it's not easy toget new clients and new owners.
You've done pretty well in that area. Mark, Yeah, I've been very
fortunate. I was able to.There was a grind, you know,
(48:43):
to start out when I left, when I left the Northwest, and you
know, I started started in theBay Area and in a few years there
and got an opportunity to come tosouthern California and it just it took me
a while to get to accumulate someof the clientele and and change my stock
(49:04):
around to a point where I couldbe competitive down here, and gradually just
picked it up each year. Andnow I have a number of terrific clientele
that you know, by by veryextensive, you know, sometimes very expensive
horses. You know, they're buyingoverseas, they're buying extensive two year olds
(49:28):
and training yearlings. And also I'vegotten a number of of you know,
very nice homebreads the last the lastfew years. So it's been a you
know, it's been a steady uh, steady client to uh to achieve what
I have. Mark. I rememberwhen you first went to southern California.
(49:50):
You remember a horse called Sailors Slewand I think he won a race with
Eddie d up at Delmar. Iwas there that day and that was pretty
cool day to to watch you danink in the winter circle. Yeah.
I believe that was the first myfirst Delmar winner actually well Delmar, but
yes, I remember that pretty clearly. Two turned grass Pelly uh twenty four
(50:14):
to one Washington Bread winning at Delmar. Yeah, that was pretty cool.
And then another horse you got uhone last week. I think the chandelier
is uh chatalas is that how it'spronouncing me and Joe wondering is that named
after a guy named John Chatalas whowas a big racing fan of here.
That is how you say your nameChatalas. She's actually named after the owner's
(50:39):
good friend. His name is BillChatalas. That they lived down dan Agnew
Bred raised Milly and it's a goodfriend of his. Yeah, and you
know, I believe that Bill Shatalasis related to John the fellow that we
know from Washington to in Oregon. But uh, we'll get Frank miramatty to
(51:02):
say that name right next time. But Frank does a super job. By
the way, I'm a big fanof Frank miramaty. Uh. Chatalas.
Yeah, that's exciting. Uh,boy, Doctor Chivell and Chatalas the Philly
both headed toward the breeders cup Mark. Yeah. Yeah, they both have
bounced back out of their prep pricesvery well at this time. I don't
(51:25):
see any reason why you know,we won't we won't be there on those
two days and give it our bestshot. Yeah. That's great, Doctor
Chivell, man, he has reallyhad a strong career and boy, he
looks like type of horse any jockwould want to ride. He's fast,
but yet he doesn't have to havethe lead. Uh, just quite the
(51:50):
individual and you've developed him. Uh, he's still how old is he now?
Is he six? Or is hefive year old? Five year old?
So just missed in the Breeders' Cupsprand a couple of years ago,
tell us about his development. He'sa horse that was bread and raised by
a client of mine. And thehorse was started out with a training by
(52:16):
the name of Luis Mendez in histwo year old season. And I'd been
watching the horse run his first coupleof starts, and he'd had a tremendous
amount of trouble in his first coupleof starts, in both of those starts.
And because I had a connection tothe owner who I had trained for
(52:38):
it actually had trained other foals outof the mayor out of his damn doctor
Scheibels and damn, I made aphone call to him and asked if the
horse could be purchased, and hesaid, yeah, the horse could be
purchased. And so I contacted JedCohen, who has since passed, but
(53:00):
the Cohen family who run under ared Baron's barn and ranch up to mescal
and you know, told him aboutthe horse, didn't really discuss numbers,
but that the horse could possibly bebought, or a part of him could
at least be bought, and sothey didn't jump right on it. We
(53:22):
went down to Delmar that summer andthen a third start he out of I
think it was his third start. He had a very clean trip and he
ran away and hid from, youknow, the group of horses that he
was in with that day. Andimmediately after the race, like the Cohen
(53:42):
family called me and they said, okay, we believe. Now let's try
and get a deal done. Andwe did after that maiden when a part
of the deal for them to buymajority interest in the horse was that he
got to stick with the original trainerthrough the futurity, and so they bought
(54:05):
the horse. They bought majority interestin the horse. After that maiden victory,
they were able to win the futurity, and then after the futurity,
the horse transferred to myself and heneeded a break. At that point,
he had had four or five races, you know, pretty good two year
old. Campaign didn't really think, especially at that time, that he was
(54:29):
a two turn horse. So inthe near future, the Breeders Cup juvenile
was really not you know, it'ssomething I thought we should aim for.
And so he got a long timeoff and then when he came back,
he had won three in a rowgoing into the Breeders Cup and then we
all know what happened on that particularday. He lost by an nostril and
(54:53):
you know, started up in hisfour year old season, went to Dubai
with him. He ran a verygood race and then needed some time off
again and that's kind of gotten thisto this, you know, to this
current campaign that he's in, andtried to met mile off of a nice
(55:13):
went off the layoff that did notget a good trip that day. Probably
wasn't going to outrun Cody's wish,but I think he would have. I
think he would have shown much betterthan what you see on paper there.
And you know, followed that upwith you know, trying to win the
Being Crosby again and parable trip hewas extremely wide. So we were kind
(55:38):
of after the Being Crosby, youknow, thinking we still had the same
horse, but we weren't showing iton on on, you know with wins.
And so the same Need Sprint Championshipcame up, and you know he
kind of redeemed himself. I wouldsay at some level. I didn't get
(56:00):
away from there the best, andreally what made it so impressive was because
he was on a racetrack that daywith some with some weather that was something
we hadn't seen him on before. But he didn't get away from the gate
very very good, and he hadto run every step of the way and
really showed a lot of heart anddetermination to get to the wire in front.
(56:22):
And so I think he's just asgood as he was going into the
Breeders couple a couple of years ago. And hopefully we don't lose any any
photos this year. Yeah, Yeah, And that's Sania Sprint Championship. They
went six in one oh eight andtwo and of course Bob affer horse named
Speedboat Beach. As Mark mentioned, they went tooth and nail the whole length
(56:45):
of the stretch and Doctor Schaibel showeda lot of gameness there to come away
with the win. Definitely. Youknow there's some good sprinters in Southern Caligan
this year as there are most years, and this is the home court for
Doctor Chivell and well the chosen Braun. I know you're well aware of that
(57:05):
horse that that fellas on a realrule too. Mark. I think it's
probably pretty likely you'll be running againsthim in the Breeders Cup most definitely.
It looks like he's you know, chos him to come out of the bing
crownsby into the into the Breeders Cup. The horse loves to win races,
(57:27):
and you know, he's definitely goingto be a factor on that day.
And you know, I think weare in good shape to hopefully turn the
tables on him. But that certainlywon the reckon West Mark. We would
be remiss up here in the Northwestif we didn't ask how your father.
Of course, everyone up in theNorthwest knows Ron Glatt and how great a
(57:49):
trainer he was back in the seventies, eighties and nineties. How's your dad
doing. He's doing pretty good. He's he, uh, you know,
kind of overseas my second string atfamily ray downs down in San Diego County,
and heals a few horses that hemesses around with and keep him kind
(58:14):
of active and with something to do. But I actually think he's got one
in on Sunday up at Fresno thathe just climbed up at the Golden Gate
Fields but runs a couple of themover at low Salad Night. So so
he's still pretty active. That's great. Well, yeah, your dad.
(58:35):
You know, I worked several wellnine seasons at Long Acres and didn't really
get to know your dad too well. Tom Roberts, Bud Clock's dad,
Mike Chambers, Junior Coffee, allthose guys, you know, I mean
claiming those claiming trainers, any trainer, they didn't want to talk to media
(58:58):
too much, and your dad wasright in there with them. But Mark,
I kind of bonded with your dadone fall or spring up here.
He was here and over Gonzaga basketballand we shared a lot of stories and
and a lot of smiles from yourdad over Gonzaga basketball. So that,
uh, that that changed things arounda little bit. But yeah, that's
(59:19):
just the way trainers were for along time and still are so to speak.
But uh yeah, say hi toyour dad for sure. For us,
that's great. And and he's traininguh John Lindley and Ray Morton just
got claimed to horse Vince. Youknow that's the one they mentioned that's running
its training that horse. Yeah,so that is great. Uh Yeah,
So a couple headed for the BreedersCup Vince, you don't go ahead and
(59:43):
brag. You bet two of Mark'shorses last week they both won. You
know I did, Mark. Ican't believe I got ten to one and
then eleven to one and eleven toone. I didn't even have to break
into a sweat. That was Uh, that was quite a training feat for
you. And you also doubled theprevious day, I belie. So you're
on quite a little roll down there. Yeah. You got to enjoy it
(01:00:05):
when you know, well it'll last. It's fun when you get on a
hot streak. And I just needthe hot streak to carry on through the
British Cup weekend hopefully. But youknow, all this is get spotted up
just right. They get you know, their maidens. You know, they're
coming off of layoffs. Maybe theyhad some things bothered them back in their
(01:00:27):
forms weren't the greatest, and they'recoming off of you know, long layoffs
and such. But it certainly hasbeen a good run. You even helped
get another Washington guy get started onthe comeback. Tyler Bays got to win
with you last week. Yeah,he rode the maiden cow bred for me.
You know, Tyler's had a littlebit of a rough time this year.
(01:00:51):
And I always liked Tyler. He'sa very hard worker and always thought
enough of his abilities, and andwe thought the horse was pretty live even
though he wasn't really on the board. He worked the horse, the horse
worked well for him, and wegave him an opportunity. And I don't
think he broke the sweat riding nowone here. Hopefully Tyler will get himself
(01:01:16):
back and in a winning way. That's great, Okay, Well, yeah,
Breeders Cup is not all that faraway, just about a month and
a half. So what am Italking about. It's the middle of October.
Wait, three weeks away, allright, I'll get my bearings going.
But Mark, great luck to youdown there, native of Auburn,
(01:01:40):
doing good and continued good luck, especially with the Breeders Cup runners coming up
at Santa Anita. And thanks fortaking time out to join us today.
Thank you appreciate it. Thanks Mark, Mark Glatt joining Yeah, thanks Mark,
And on to more racing. Twoday week. It's an Anita this
(01:02:00):
week, by the way, Saturdayand Sunday they raced Monday on the Columbus
Day, so no racing today Friday, the thirteenth, But yeah, fourteenth
and fifteenth. Took a little peakat the cards. They both looked pretty
good, good, interesting, Yeah, excellent, and yeah, re Reader's
Cup November third and fourth, justthree weeks away. We'll have our next
podcast that week, either Wednesday orThursday, depending on some availability of some
(01:02:25):
of our principles on travel and allthat. Okay, thanks Mark Klatt Sports
Shorts. You know, we're justgetting close to the World Series again,
and a couple of these major sports. It's been a long time since back
to back winter Vince, and you'reprettyware stuff like that. You can even
add the hockey. But in baseball, you know, the last back to
(01:02:47):
back World Series winner. Now,let's see, the Giants had that great
run, but they went every otheryear ten, twelve and fourteen or something
like that. Ye do we gotto go all the way back to the
Yankees. We do, Yeah, ninety nine and two thousand they won four
times in five years. There, that's the last time two thousand, that's
(01:03:09):
twenty three years ago. There's beena back to back World Series champion.
And NFL football is it's been along time since a repeat Super Bowl winner
as well. Shoot, just youknow, free agency and yes, that's
a big part of it. Butyou got to go back to you want
to take a stab at that too. The Super Bowl. Yeah, last
(01:03:32):
time there was a back to backSuper Bowl, it'll be New England.
That's right, very good. Lookat Vince Burg. Well that's all I
mean. If you're going to aGas two thousand and three and four,
each game they won by three points, Carolina one year and Delon so yeah,
Jake Delone Philly. Actually Philly scoreda late touchdown. Oh that was
(01:03:55):
yeah, three, that's right. But yeah, two thousands, so that's
nineteen year years ago. The lasttime there was a back to back Super
Bowl winner baseball or a basketball there'sbeen a lot of you know, Golden
State had started their great run withtwo titles twenty fifteen and sixteen. The
Heat won a couple in a row, the Lakers a couple of times since
(01:04:15):
two thousands, I've had back toback, and of course the Bulls had
two three peats in the nineties.San Antonio won all those titles with Tim
Duncan and David Robbins around for awhile, but they never won two in
a row, which is kind ofweird. We'll just add on to your
baseball thing here real quick. Youknow, only the Dodgers, Oils and
the Braves all won a hundred gamesthis year. They went one to nine
(01:04:36):
in the playoffs. Listen to that. Wow, you know it's just it's
yeah. Now they're saying it's thelayoff is bad and I don't know a
one week layoff, but it youknow, it gets I mean the short
sample size you can get in troublereal fast. But there might be something
to it there because those you're justseeing good teams getting crushed in the playoffs,
(01:04:57):
so it kind of seems like it'smore short for you. Okay,
do you know what about hockey?Back to back? Hockey back to back?
I drown a blank on well APenguins did it in I think it
was fifteen and sixteen. Yea recentlyunder Sydney Crosby and Afwghuinea Malkin. All
right, okay, fifty years agotoday. You know what that was?
(01:05:20):
Okay, I mean this was signof an esoteric One October of seventy three,
Secretariat was winding down his career forsure. He won the Canadian International.
It was his last race. Well, let's see the World Series that
(01:05:41):
year was that would have been Oaklandover the Mets. Okay, that's right,
the Mets. Then they beat theDodgers the next year, that's right.
Yeah, Okay, that's my bestguess. Well, yeah, but
it was, like I said, this is kind of esoteric, but it
was the first Sonics game under headcoach Bill Russell. Okay, and we
(01:06:02):
lived through the Bill Russell years herein Seattle, and Seattle beat not the
Washington, not the Baltimore. Theywere the Capitol Bullets that year. You
remember that, I sure do.And the Sonics beat him one o three
to one oh two in front eleven, six hundred and seventy three in the
Seattle Coliseum now Climate Pledge Arena.Spencer Haywood led the Sonics with twenty four
(01:06:23):
and the Big E had twenty seven. Big he was there by then.
Yeah, he had twenty seven forthe Bullets. He wasn't afraid to shoot
the ball. Joe, as Imentioned any times, great player. Of
course, he was nine for thirtynine one game, and I can top
that. I went to a gamewhere he was eight for forty an overtime
game against the Sonics, and hehad a lot of confidence. Let's catch
(01:06:44):
that ball and he chewed a fallawayjumper. Yeah, be gone. And
I remember that commercially used to doabout chat rhythm watch either, I mean
backing in on the kid. Butanyhow, yeah, great player. And
in fact, the Sonics and Bulletslater in that decade would have you know,
they'd meet in two finals. Yeah, and they'd split, the Sonics
winning in seventy nine, the Bulletsin seventy eight. But yeah, the
Bill Russell era in Seattle an interestinglittle time in Seattle sports there. Oh
(01:07:09):
gosh, you know, Attendants hadstarted to pick up a whole lot before
that. They did even won oftheir player coach, Lenny Wilkins. They
were a good draw. Yeah, and then Russell didn't hurt that at all.
And he was the first, youknow, and Bill Russell, you
know, to give him his duea little bit as a coach, he
got those Sonics playing pretty hard. You know. They did get make their
(01:07:30):
first ever playoffs under Wrestle the nextyear I think it was seventy four to
seventy five, and then in seventyfive seventy six they made the playoffs and
got bounced by Phoenix, who endedup being pretty good. They took the
Celtics to six or seven games inthe finals. So yeah, that's right.
I think it was six games thatyear. But Bill Russell era,
Yeah, that was a big timein Seattle basketball. The Sonics were just
(01:07:53):
five six years old. But reallyon an upswing. Okay selections, I
don't have any thing for this weekend. I was too busy putting together the
rest of this show, and Ididn't do any handicapping for the weekend myself.
I got one. I got okay. Sunday Race ten at Santa Anita.
It's a maiden special weight number sevenAero a r Io. Seeing how
(01:08:17):
the lame starts with an eight, you want to guess who the owner is
A r ioh No, I can'tred a cop. All their horses start
with these, so you know.Anyhow, this horse is stretching out after
two sprints in maiden special weight andshould be on the lead early under Diego
Herrera for trainer Peter Miller. Onehundred and fifty thousand dollars Boat dal Colt
(01:08:41):
out of a stormy Atlantic Mayor. The other four folds out of the dam
are all winners. I like that, So this horse probably be in front
early and is going to be abig price with decent connections, So we'll
take a shot on Ario. Okay, and what was that morning line?
Twelve twelve to one? Outstanding forfootball? Maybe? I think the Chargers
(01:09:02):
will beat the Cowboys on Monday night. Chargers are home, and they don't
always have it. They don't havea great home advantage. But Dallas's last
two road games Arizona whipped them, and then of course San Francisco, and
the Chargers are getting Austin Eckler back, which is good for our fantasy team,
sure is? Yeah, all right, what's the line on that one?
(01:09:24):
I think Dallas is a two ortwo and a half point favorite right
around there on the road. Yeah, yeah, okay. Last week's trivia
question. Our last show was BudClock's dad, who his last full season
here at Emerald Downs was like sevenor eight. Then he left for the
Bay Area. But he was rightat the top of steaks wins in track
(01:09:46):
history. He was at the top. He was at the top when he
left was pasted. You know,he wasn't here, but he had jump
roun one won seven stakes and thatwas at ages two and three. I
am busy was a three time steakwinner. Bub won three steaks. One
year Ropers and Wrangler as well, she won nine steaks. She was ten
(01:10:09):
for twelve at Emerald Downs and theonly Washington Bread to be in the Hall
of Fame here that excuse me,the only non Washington bread to be in
the Hall of Fame. She wonten of twelve starts in Emerald Downs history
nine steaks, but Bud Clockstead onlywon one Washington Cup steak race, and
that was, of course, becauseall those aforementioned horses raced before the Washington
(01:10:30):
Cup began in two thousand and three. Russ Knocker Gawa got it. Russ,
you got some swag coming. I'mgonna have to shoot you an email
as soon as my email gets workingagain. Ah. Cinderella Liberty won the
two thousand and five Washington Cup JuvenilePhillies race. She won couple of stakes
that year, but wasn't the topjuvenile Philly at the meet because Chessnut Lady
(01:10:53):
won the shin Poh and Cinderella Libertywas way back in that race. Chestnut
Lady, he was the top juvenilePhilly for trainer Jim Penny, and the
next day Schooling You won the ladsand he was the top two year old
colt at the meeting for Jim Penny. Actually at Mike Fearborn owned both of
(01:11:15):
those horses as well. Chestnut Ladywas eleven to one, schooling you was
nine to one. That was agood weekend for that camp. But the
answer was Cinderella, Liberty and RussNakagawa got it. Our question for this
show who has the best record ofhorses who ran in each of the Gottstein
Futurity, the local Derby be itLong Acres or Emerald Downs and the Mile.
(01:11:41):
So you had to have run inall three of those races in your
career. And this is going backto nineteen forty, which was the first
year of the Washington Futurity, whichwas renamed the Gottstein when Joe Gotstein did
pass away in nineteen seventy. Sowho had the best record And by the
phrasing of that question you can tellthat probably that nobody won all three,
(01:12:03):
but who had the best record andthey ran in the Gotstein Derbian Mile?
Okay, Well, Emerald Downs isopen seven days a week for full card
simulcasting. There's dancing at the Downson Saturday Saturday night after simulcasting and that
is October fourteenth tomorrow, so takeadvantage of that. You can get tickets
(01:12:23):
online or at the door, andwe'll have another podcast Breeders Cup Week.
Thanks for listening to horse Racing Northwest.
