Speaker 1 (00:08):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vault, coming to
you from Clark's Main Street Market studios in overcasted downtown Lexington, Kentucky.
John Caliperry and his team has escaped the city after
you boot him, So I don't know what all the
booze happened. But we do have other programs, like we

(00:31):
do have other sports programs. Our basketball program is still
rocking and rolling, busting people up. Our gymnastics team had
Excite night yes Thursday or is it Friday Friday, which
was very exciting. Larry Vaut and I attended, got to
see some of my ladies. I got to see d
Rod do her thing and some of the other people

(00:54):
got to see lel Little, one of UK gymnastics favorites,
favorite coach, one of historians. Got to speak with her
a little bit. And it's always good when I get
to see Larry Vaught in person. Larry Vaught just brings
a smile to your face. So if you haven't seen
Larry Vaught, find out where's gonna He's gonna be a
court fourteen with Jack Pilgrim will be there. I think
I'm gonna go. I've been really, really busy this week,

(01:16):
but I'm still wanting to go because i want to
see Jasper Johnson in person. And before we get back
to the big Ass Fans Hotline, thanks for holding, Mike
and Jack, thanks for holding. Before we get back to
the big Ass Fans Hotline, I want to let you
know we have the hardest working producer, maybe in the world,
but certainly in the city of Lexington, Kentucky, maybe in
the whole state. Because after Nielsen ratings came out last week,

(01:40):
we were looking pretty good. You guys have supported us,
and I don't know if you guys know what goes
on behind the scene, but I'm taking a break during
that top of the hour break and our producer, when
he's doing this show, when we take that seven minute break,
five minute break.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
He goes into another studio.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
I had to ask the question, he's on there broadcasting
a whole nother damn show, bo, what were you doing
in the other studio broadcast?

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Well, first of all, you're too kind, but I am
not the hardest working radio producer in Lexington. That would
go to one Billy Rutledge, who runs UK Sports Net.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
One A and one B.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
I'll take B. Okay, I'll take B. But I am nowhere.
I'm not in Billy's neighborhood. When you made that compliment,
give that to him because he makes this place go
when it comes to the UK Sports Network, I just
chip in on UK women's basketball, some of the calling shows,
doing this and doing baseball. But Billy's a number one.
Now let's see. What was your other question? What were

(02:42):
you producing over there? Okay, yeah, I just doing a
few things on another stations. Had to take care of
a couple of things. That's all.

Speaker 4 (02:49):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
So when he's when when you guys are waiting for
us to come back from break, you think we are,
we're having cocktails and mocktails. No, bowl's over there and producing.
I'm looking for snacks. I'm scavving. I'm scavenging in here
trying to find But I.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Will say this, I had quite a few people come
up and say they enjoy listening to us on Sunday morning.
It's fun for them. They think we have a good time.
So it kind of goes back to the cocktails and mocktails,
you know, whatever we may be drinking. No, I'm just
really thrilled that we had some fans come up and
say they enjoy listening to us on Sunday morning Sports Talk,

(03:23):
and that's a huge reflection on Larry and Jack what
they do every Sunday morning for us, and a big
reflection on you as well, Anthony.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Well, I appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (03:32):
Hey, let me tell you, Anthony, I was going into
the women's basketball game Thursday night and had a fan
stop and talk to talk to me about the show
and how much they enjoyed when we had Emma Groom. Oh,
and that was kind of cool. And I was also
over at Center College one day this week and I
was talking to an elite swimmer over there by the
name of Cally West who is from Lection Dion, and

(03:54):
we're finishing up the interview and I told her how
going she is, maybe she ought to be into media
work and all said it going to be a doctor,
and she told me so that was kind of funny
because she did like radio and I and that heard
her dad listen to us every Sunday morning and that
her dad really really especially enjoyed the show. So it's
kind of like what Bo said, you just keep running

(04:15):
the people that are listening, and that's really really good
to know.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
I'm glad to give the positive side of it, because
typically I get connected to the negative sides of it.
It's just like in retail, you only get they only
call your manager in corporate if you do something terrible.
They don't call manager in corporate when you go above
and behind to do something for truth. Uh would that
saying let's get back to the big ass fans hotline, Mike,
thanks for holding on my man.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
I will apologize, but this is one.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Of those days where everybody wants a little therapy or
everybody wants to, you know, kind of vent. And when
we're for that, whatever, whichever side of you you want
to be on, Mike, we're here for you.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
What do you got for us?

Speaker 4 (04:52):
All?

Speaker 6 (04:52):
Yeah, I appreciate y'all. I guess I should tell you all.
I love the show. I love lesson than y'all or
my therapy after a Loss celebration of after a Wind.
But I think I listened to Jack for five hours yesterday,
But you know I was I was just gonna say,
you know, I know I would rather lose to anyone
other than cal. I don't get me wrong, but I

(05:13):
think in the grand scheme of things, We're gonna be fine.
I think everybody kind of needs to calm down. It's
kind of I kind of feel like that losses partly
on us. We you know, we Key's everybody were their
super Bowl. They were our super Bowl, and we were
tight at the end of that game. And I just
think and they were ready because you know, I think it.

(05:34):
I think it kind of motivated those guys to be booed.
And I mean, I don't care if you boo you don't.
It's a supporting event. I mean, they don't mean you
hate over anything. But I'm just saying, like in the
grand scheme of it, and you could tell. I think
Hope was shaken the bit yesterday, to be honest, and
the whole when will come out play anyway, I don't
get me wrong, But you know we got two you

(05:54):
got two point guards out. We all got to I mean,
Tchatness Purry' is not quite ready to yet, but each tried.
I don't know. I think I'm I'm with them on
Jackson getting twenty shots. I think that's the recipe here
as long as Butler's out. But I don't know what
you guys think. But that's how I say it. But
I'm I think our programs had in the right direction.

(06:15):
I mean, we said it in the beginning. We got
to remember that this is the toughest SEC there ever was. Man,
I mean, you're going to lose some games and there's
not much difference in one through twelve.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Yeah, Mike, Mike, we have I appreciate the call. Those
those are great words of Jack Pilgrim. This is everybody's
super Bowl. And I think based off what Mike said,
I'm want to ask you this, Jack Pilgrims before we
get back to the next caller, I do want to
ask you he said, this is everybody's super Bowl. And
up to this point, we've won some very big games.

(06:50):
The Duke game we won, we beat some top ten teams.
Is was this the first game where Mark Pope was
not playing with house money, because up until this point,
everything we did was house money, Like if we won,
people who would be happy we lost?

Speaker 2 (07:07):
You know it's his first year.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Was this the first game where Mark Pope kind of
felt like, man, it's on me this week, Like because
if we lose to a top ten team, nobody's gonna
be mad because Mark Pope just put a team together.
None of these guys will play together. They're really weren't
his guys. And now this was I believe, maybe I'm wrong.
This was the first game where Mark Pope had to
feel like, man, look the pressure is on me. If
I lose this game, people are gonna have questions for me.

(07:31):
People are gonna you feel that way or.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Or no.

Speaker 7 (07:36):
I think that's what made the Tennessee win kind of
so weird to me, because I, in my head thought
that the team would be feel less pressure gonna get
into this game. Yes, this was our super Bowl. Like,
I don't even think it's a bad thing to admit that, Like,
I think it's pretty pretty blatant that, you know, as

(07:58):
much as they say every game is the biggest game
of our lives. And you know, they had the same
approach against Colgate as they do against Bred, did against Brown,
as they did against Louills they now do against you know, Arkansas.
But I thought that winning that game at Tennessee and
avoiding the three game losing streak going into this game,

(08:19):
Like I think if they had lost that that Tennessee game,
you're riding a three game losing streak and you kind
of have the pressure of, uh oh, if we lose
this game, we're gonna be on a four game losing
streak going into you know, you know, the schedule is
not gonna let up. I mean, we're gonna have a
rank matchup on Tuesday down at Ole Miss, Ole miss
team that's playing pretty darn well as of player. So

(08:41):
I just had the thought in my mind that if
you could win that game at Tennessee, you are kind
of playing with house money and the pressure is off
of you. Now it's like, hey, you know, we're back
on you know, got a little bit of cushion. But
you know, maybe it was the opposite. Maybe this team
needed a little bit of urgency against a you know,
a team that was clearly gonna be hunger, a team

(09:01):
coach clearly that was going to come in wanting to
win that game and had a lot of riding on it,
you know, for his own personal reputation and just kind
of his own stroking his ego. To be totally honest,
I thought that, you know, the pressure would be off,
but you know, maybe they needed that pressure. Maybe they
needed that urgency to kind of light a fire on them,
because I just didn't get that sense after halftime that

(09:22):
there was a whole lot of want to that Arkansas
clearly had.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
That is Jack Pilgrim. But on the biggest fans hoighline,
we have another Jack. Let's see what the other Jack
has to say.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
Good morning, Jack. What do you got for us? Man?
Render a little therapy for us?

Speaker 8 (09:38):
Well, I have a comment, but Larry brought up Larry's
still there.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
Yeah, I'm here.

Speaker 8 (09:46):
Okay, three questions and a real quick comment, because I
know you've got a other callers. Who who did Rick
Patino replace?

Speaker 5 (09:58):
He follow Lady said, who.

Speaker 8 (10:00):
Did John cal Perry replace?

Speaker 5 (10:04):
He followed Billy Gillespie.

Speaker 8 (10:07):
Who did Joe Hall replace?

Speaker 5 (10:10):
He followed the legendary ad alf.

Speaker 8 (10:11):
Rupp, who's the only coach in the history of college
basketball to replace a legend and win a title of
his own.

Speaker 5 (10:19):
That would be Joe B.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
Hall.

Speaker 8 (10:22):
I arrest your case and I arrest my case.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
Thank you.

Speaker 8 (10:25):
He's the most under he's the most underappreciated coach in
Kentucky history.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Well, thank you for the call. Jack. We appreciate that
we have our own Jack on here.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Larry Vaught. I do like with Jack, just done there.
But my question is when you said my history doesn't
go back that far. But is Patino not is? And
this is this is an ignorant question. I don't know
the answer. Is Patino not a Hall of Famer as
of yet? Or do you think he deserves to be
a Hall of Famer?

Speaker 4 (10:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (10:57):
I think he is, And if he's not, he certainly
deserves it.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Because when you you said who replaced the Hall of
Famer and won a championship? I was thinking Tubby. I
mean now when he said a legend, and I feel
like Patino was a legend. He wanted two championships, two
different schools, although one was vacated.

Speaker 5 (11:13):
Go ahead, Yeah, that's that's a fair point. And in fact,
Patino's last two years that Tubby stepped into were better
than RUP's last two years that Joe Hall stepped into.
That that's a fair point.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
So I was kind of thrown off when he said that,
But I understand this point. I don't go back far
enough to appreciate uh And I do. I appreciate Joby
Hall after his coaching days, the guy he is and
the of the guy he was, and those things, but
I do not go back far enough to appreciate what
he did as a coach because I was not watching
UK at that point. But we're gonna get to a break,

(11:50):
We're gonna come back. We're gonna continue to take calls
eight five nine to a zero two two eight seven,
eight five nine to eight zero Cats. I am going
to ask our producer to do something off there because
we haven't I haven't gotten enough of Jack Pilgrim this show.
And I know he has a whole family. That is
how it became the host, because he has a family

(12:11):
take care of and he wants to watch young Billy grow.
So we let him off early, but I don't think
we've heard enough from him. We're gonna try both do
what you can do to persuade Jack to maybe stay
with us for two more segments. But in order to
do that, we have to get off air. We'll be
back after this. You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning
Sports Talk on news radio six thirty WLAP. This is

(12:31):
the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP. Welcome back
Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony Wide along
with Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vault. Jack Pilgrim, what we
did here? Some of the people saying and Larry Vault
talked about it as well. If Butler, if Lamarck Butler
does not come back, everyone's Jack Jackson, Robinson's his demeanor,

(12:57):
his his makeup, his bill is not to be the
guy now. Alway doesn't mind taking a bunch of shots.
Neither does Amari.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
But if.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Lamont Butler, which you kind of got me, you get
you know, you got my shoulders a little tense when
you said. Some of the Mark Pope's comments about Butler
coming back seems skeptical, like he may not make it back.
We we still have the program still has to go on,
There's there's still games to be played, There's still march madness.

(13:30):
What is what is the plan if Lamont Butler doesn't
come back? Why why did trend Noah not play?

Speaker 4 (13:37):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Are we gonna Are we gonna get Perry? Are we
gonna get Travis Perry?

Speaker 2 (13:41):
In position?

Speaker 4 (13:42):
Like?

Speaker 6 (13:43):
What?

Speaker 2 (13:43):
What? What? What are we looking at?

Speaker 1 (13:45):
If Lamont Butler doesn't return, are you gonna go feed uh?

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Feed Jackson some some gravel making tough.

Speaker 7 (13:58):
I want to play a whole lot antony. I'm gonna
I'm gonna become the best version of myself and lean
into my faith, and I'm gonna pray a whole lot.

Speaker 4 (14:04):
No.

Speaker 7 (14:05):
I I think Jackson is capable. I think he's very, very,
very good, and I think honestly, he's a little bit
more comfortable as a lead guard. At least, I think
he's more productive as a league guard. I don't think
he likes playing the position as much, but I think
he's more productive and probably needs to like playing the
position a little bit more. And we've seen Amari Williams

(14:26):
step up, bring the ball off the floor, and to
Pope's credit, his offense does not rely on a you know,
true point guard who's gonna bring the ball off the
floor and kind of initiate the offense deep into the
shot clock, like you know, a Savier wheeler, who would
you know, dribble the air out of the ball until
there was six seconds left of the shot on the

(14:48):
clock and then you know, give it to somebody else
to put up a you know, last second prayer before
a shot clock violation. That's not you know, Pope's offense
is get it past the half court line in thre
seconds or less, and you know, get into your zoom action,
get into your set almost immediately, and you know try
to have a shot up and within ten seconds, so

(15:10):
you don't need a true like superstar point guard. But
it is just something to be said about, Hey, I
feel better with him bringing the ball to the floor
and not turning it over and handling the pressure a
little bit well. And you know, on the more so
than anything on the defensive side, being able to you know,
guard guys ninety four feet and you know, be a
you know, on ball food defender at the top of

(15:31):
the key where that was one of the biggest struggles
for Kentucky last night was DJ Wagner just cooked, you know,
in the second half, beat guys off the dribble time
after time, was hitting the shots. You know, you'd sag
off of him and then he'd hit the you know,
he'd hit the shot that he didn't doesn't traditionally make,
and you know, just got to give him credit for it.
But I would have much rather had Lama Butler in

(15:55):
there guarding DJ than you know, any of the other
options that we had. Colin Chandler has up defensively, but
he's such a non factor offensive the rate right now,
but you know it's hard to trust him for extended stretches.
Beyond a couple of spots minutes here and there. So
it would be a really, really tough situation if Kentucky's
gonna be out without Lamont Butler. Not a tragic time

(16:17):
to just throw the talel in on the season type
of situation, but a pretty darn tough one for all
things considered.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
That is Jack Pilgrim.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
We're getting bonus time with Jack Pilgrim because our producer
persuade Jack Pilgrim to stay with us for it, and
they just said another.

Speaker 6 (16:33):
Sell ain't work, Anthony.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
But we're going to get back to the phone line
as before that and see what Rebecca has to say.
Good morning, Rebecca, what do you got for us?

Speaker 9 (16:44):
Well? I finally got too, man. I want to know.
I want you to know. I like this program every
Sunday morning. I grabbed you guys at nine o'clock and
it's really very good. Here's what I called in about,
thinking impress I said, and watched this game last night,
and it's like we reversed our first half second half.

(17:11):
We played in the first half like we normally played
in the second half, and it was But what I'm
calling about is the same thing I've seen since I
moved here in seventy two. We've got a UK fan
base that sets on their hands. Yesterday, excuse me, take you.
I watched them that's okay, sort of a and I

(17:36):
watched them. They're up in their cheer and their everything.
And in the second half, I said, look at them,
look at them. They're sitting there. Nobody's yelling, nobody's doing anything.
They're sitting there like they're painted on and nobody's up.
I watched the Tennessee Florida game yesterday. They weren't a
person in that building that wasn't screaming and yelling. And

(18:00):
that's I still think that's what makes teams jump in
there and go back. You know, It's just I don't know.
The UK fans can whine and moan all they want to,
but until they get up and start. And I never
saw any screenshots of our fan our student fans. I
don't know if they sold all their seats out or something,

(18:21):
but I didn't see any student sections showed. ESPN is horrible.
Their announcers are horrible. I cannot stand. And I bring
my radio back here. I turn on WAP. I listened
to Jack and Tom and my son and my husband
get frustrated. They're tolerating me now though, because of the delay.
I know what's going on before they do, and they're

(18:43):
sitting in front of me watching it. But it's the
fan base. They It's like when we start having trouble,
they just sit there and go back and forth and
then start leaving. So despicable to get up and start
walking out and all the glory. But ESPN was giving
Calip Perry. I listened to cal Perry's introduction. My sister

(19:06):
was having surgery in Indiana. I sit there and listened
to his introduction and his blowhard speech, and it was
fifteen years of blowhard until the last part is blaming
us and everybody else for his lack of coaching. And
fifteen years. Okay, so he was here fifteen years. He
got paid for it, so anyway, but it's the fan base.

(19:28):
They can whine all they want to, but they got
to get up and start sharing. Thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
Thank you, Rebecca. I love the call. You know what
else I love? I love having Jack Pigrim on Sunday
Morning Sports Are. He's sticking around for another segment, so
when we come back, we will still have Jack Paper
May and Larry Vaughe. I love Larry Watt too. I
don't want it to keep them under Bo Robinson, you
know you know how I feel about them.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
We don't say it. We'll be back after this year.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
Listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news
radio six thirty WLP.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I am
Anthony White along with Larry vaud Still got Jack Pilgrim,
bonus time with Jack Pilgrim. With this our Sunday Morning
sports Talking is brought to you by Country Boy Brewing.
And you may need a whole lot of Country Boy
brewing today. After last night, late late last night, lost

(20:23):
to Arkansas and John Caliperry returning to Lexton, Kentucky and
they beat us eighty nine, just seventy nine here in
Rupp Arena. But we do have other sports going on.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
The Firecrackers there.

Speaker 1 (20:35):
We will have the Firecrackers coach on with us at
eleven o'clock to talk about, you know, the atmosphere, you
know the things. There is always a great time when
the Firecrackers are in town. They've been in town all
a couple times last week, so we will talk a
little bit about that. But right now, the big ass

(20:57):
fans hotlines are still lit up.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
We have callers on hold. We're going to get to those,
so if.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
You want to join it eight five nine to eight
zero two two eight seven eight five nine to eight
zero cas Larry Vault. Before we get to the phone
lines really quickly, I want to ask you. After Rebecca called,
and I really loved her comment. Rebecca, thank you for calling.
She said, the fan base sitting on their hands, and
she didn't like it. I echo a lot of things

(21:23):
she said. But as a player, and you as a
journalists as you have been for many years, is the
fan base expected to make the catapult the players to
do something that they are I guess when in my
day was paid to do, which means paying for your
scholarship or your your classes, and your food and your

(21:47):
and your room and board. Is a fan base expected
to catapult you, to motivate.

Speaker 2 (21:52):
You for victories? Or is that what you signed up
for when you ink the paper.

Speaker 5 (21:59):
I think it's supposed to see what you signed up for.
I think fan base can certainly help inspire a team,
but to be honest, and Jack was in the building
and I was not. I think it was probably pretty
hard in the second half to get up and try
to be inspired. For the majority of it, I think
there was a few times it sounded and looked like

(22:20):
the crowd was doing what he could, but Kentucky could
never respond to keep anything going. I mean, it would
cut an eleven point lead to five or six or
something like that, and Arkansas would run off six points again.
And I think Jack, that just kind of sucks the
life out of a building when it keeps happening and happening.
And it became pretty obvious, or at least it did
to me that Kentucky wann't going to be able to

(22:42):
win the game because they couldn't stop Arkansas from scoring.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Jack.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Before we get back to the phone line't what Larry
Vault was asking? Does does the does the players have
to And it's easy for you to cheer when your
team is on a rally and their motivating there, moving
in the right directions, easy for you to cheer, But
doesn't the average human being need picking up when you're

(23:06):
at the lowest point, Jack Pilgrim, And that's just.

Speaker 7 (23:11):
The weird dynamic of Refereena. It's the chicken or the egg.
We've been you know, dealing with it for years. Rough
at its peak, at its at its.

Speaker 6 (23:20):
Absolute best, is untouchable.

Speaker 7 (23:23):
Nothing can ever come close to you know, peak refeerena,
big shots, big moments, celebration. But there are times, there
are lulls where when you know, the game flows down
a little bit and we kind of get into the
weeds and you know, there it gets quiet. I mean,
that's a pretty cavernous place, a twenty five hundred people

(23:46):
in there, and you know you could hear a pin
drop like that. There's something to be said about finding
a middle ground there where you know, yes, the pops
are awesome. There they are, you know, second to none,
but I even almost take a you know, a lesser
pop if it meant that even in the lower more

(24:06):
quiet moments that we saw some you know, hurt, some
buzz and got the you know, consistent, I thought that
that color was you know, on the note like, I
think that there are there are times that it it you.
The crowd should be your ultimate advantage. It should be
the one thing that pushes this team over the finish line.
And just kind of felt like and again too. Arkansas's credit.

(24:27):
You know, big Z hit that massive shot when there
was kind of that window opportunity to six point game.
You get to stop there. You know, the fan base
is kind of wanting it. They're kind of building up
and like, all right, this could be our moment to attack,
and then Big Z hit the big three, you know,
essentially ends it. That It just kind of takes all
of the wind out of the sales in the arena
and it just becomes it.

Speaker 9 (24:49):
You know, it is what it is.

Speaker 7 (24:50):
We're losing this game. So I think some of it
is you got to give credit for Arkansas for hitting
big shots and making the big plays and wanting it
a little bit more than in Kentucky. But I do
think that there are kind of swing moments in a
game where we're Kentucky and and you know, BBN could
have been a little bit better just being there, you know,
just a bystander sitting back and watching the crowd unfold. Yeah,

(25:12):
there were some some people sitting on their hands and
enjoying themselves without making a peek. So I don't know
what the fix looks like, because we've been kind of
having this debate.

Speaker 6 (25:22):
For years now.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
I'm waiting for march. We haven't seen a deep march
in a long time. So let us get back to
the big ass fans hotline to see what John has
to say.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
Good morning, John, what do you got for us?

Speaker 8 (25:36):
Good?

Speaker 4 (25:36):
More and Anthony. Then I said myself to the screener
as a former teammate of mister Vault, and he may
or may not recognize my voice, but I'm one of
the surviving members of our team. Uh. But I did
have a question for him. Arry, you remember rupture hunts,

(26:00):
and I'm sure you do remember the fast break and
that to me, I would love to have some video
of that and send it to Mark and showing the
benefit of when you go to defense, they throw up
a shot, you send a man home and the benefits

(26:26):
of that, and I remember how many points we got
from that during that time. That's all I wait for
comment from you, sir.

Speaker 2 (26:39):
Thank you for call John Larry Vatt your responses.

Speaker 5 (26:43):
Yeah, the runs got out and ran and ran a lot.
They did it a lot. But I think to give
credit to Arkansas, they didn't let Kentucky have many changes
to get out and run last night. I think they
were really cognizant about about getting back. Then, I think,
as Jack has pointed out, Jackson Robinson is still trying

(27:04):
to get acclimated to being that true point guard. And
I think sometimes Kentucky just had trouble getting things initiated.
I mean sometimes Jack, it was almost like if Jackson
got the ball to mid court, with the pressure the
wagoner was putting on him, he was pretty content to
give it up. Sometimes it wasn't real anxious to get
it back. It looked to me like at times either

(27:25):
and that's something they're just going to have to find
a way to work through.

Speaker 4 (27:28):
All.

Speaker 5 (27:28):
What Jack mentioned earlier in the show about Mark talking
about Lamont Butler, it was really vague. I thought on
Thursday we did his press conference. Boy, he was even
vaguer after the game last night. And I think I'm
like Jack, I'm kind of in the worry category right
now about when Lamont Butler's going to get back.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
And Jack, when Larry was kind of with Larry said,
I kind of had those same thought processes. And Antonio
rees when he used to put the ball and when
he was on ball, like when he had control hold
the ball, he can find him a spot he can shoot.
And I feel like Jackson can be that guy that
Antonio Reeves type guy, because there's a lot of times
he would Antonio Reeves would disappear like you said, Severe

(28:10):
willerd would just pound the air out of the ball
and he didn't have much time. But I do feel
as if Jackson can be that guy. But if Jackson's
going to be passive as the point guard and you know,
as Larry say, get the ball out of his hands
because of the pressure or whatever. And Colin Chandler, you
cannot pay him to take a shot like you cannot
pay him he's in the lane, he'll just pants it

(28:31):
all the way back out or handed. He did not
want to take a shot. So if Lamont Butler doesn't return,
I am a bit concerned. But where do we stand,
Jack Pilgrim. If you have Jackson who's not going to
be aggressive. And for whatever reason, we played Colin Chandler
extended minutes and he obviously did not want to participate

(28:55):
on the offensive end of the court, and he tried
his best on the defensive end of the court. And
I will will go back. I haven't said this probably
a five or six years. I do believe sports are fixed,
so I don't know if the fix was in, but
jack Pill.

Speaker 6 (29:11):
That's one hell of a.

Speaker 4 (29:14):
Right before going to me.

Speaker 2 (29:17):
I mean, I said, I want to tell you. Mark
Burgery will tell you, hey.

Speaker 6 (29:25):
I mean you do you do?

Speaker 7 (29:28):
But uh yeah, I think they there's something to be
said about when you're the lead guard and a Mark
Pope offense that if you're running it, you're oftentimes not
getting the final shot drawn up for you where the
action leads to, you know, a path to Amari that

(29:48):
leads to you know, a backscreen to wherever, and you
know it could be a Kobe Brayer cut or you know,
it's there are times where if you are the initiator
getting to you know, the the zoom ac and with
you know, the ball in the big hand, that you
you are not the guy that's in position to get
the last shot. So maybe it's kind of a mental

(30:09):
thing for Jackson where it's like, well, I don't like
play point guard as much because I know it means
that there's uh, you know, not as many opportunities for
me to get shots off. But I do, you know,
I think there's a freedom with that though, where he
can decide when and I mean like, look, higga Oway
isn't getting shots drawn up for him, but the dudes
getting down downhill plenty and getting scoring opportunities around the

(30:33):
rim whenever he wants them, and you know that's the best.
You know, you could say he's been the most consistent,
consistently productive player on the entire team. So I think
there's a put, you know, give and take with that.
I think that Jackson knows that he'll get plenty of
shots and plenty of touches, you know, or I guess
plenty of touches that could lead to put plenty of

(30:54):
shots at point guard. But it's not like the most
convenient thing in the world to you know, kind of
face all pressure for ninety four feet and have to
you know, we have to get past the half four line,
and you know it quickly passed it up out of
like all right, well I worked, you know, all this
way to get past the line out somebody else's thing.
Like I do think there's something to be said about

(31:15):
he needs to just assert himself and just accept this
role and grow into this role and become more confident
in it and comfortable in it. And I think he
can be a really good player in an emergency crunch time.
Like if Lamont's out and curves out, then he has
to be the guy. I think he can be good
in that role. I just think it's a comfort thing.
It's just going to take time and revs.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
That's Jack Pilgrim. Let's get to the phone lines. Let's
see what Jeff has to say. I'm pretty sure I
know what Jeff this is because this has been a
week of ups and downs. Good morning, Jeff.

Speaker 2 (31:47):
What do you got for its doing?

Speaker 1 (31:51):
I'm doing good. Well, I'm doing I'm doing as good
as I can. Because John Caliperry returned to town. He
he was like the Grinch Grinch story.

Speaker 10 (32:02):
I just want I just want to say for that
is mister Pilgrim, Yes he is, mister f enjoy your
crippal Noxle and regular Seas and Rick d You know
you're doing that. You know you're beating regular Sea. You knew,
we knew he was gonna beat him. He regular Seas, Rick,
everybody beat him.

Speaker 4 (32:19):
Okay, I love I loved it.

Speaker 10 (32:24):
Gee, I don't think that's what Mark post playing was
like a shoot okay in our heart and talking shooting.
We should got there. Let him shoot. It's like Alabama okay,
and all these people that hated Cali Ferry, that wanted
them gone. I always we lost our program. That that
lost our program. That's all we heard a big William
madness on YouTube. Well we got it back now with

(32:45):
both and you got it back all right because Cata
Ferry beats it. But this is what the Mats did.

Speaker 1 (32:51):
Jeff, I appreciate that call, and uh, I really don't
know the tone of that conversation.

Speaker 2 (32:56):
I don't know if that is kudos to us or
kudos to cal.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
Either way, he's living in Knoxville, somewhere in Tennessee and
he's a UK fan, so he should have been happy
earlier in the week. Maybe not today, but either way,
we'll be back after this year. Listening to Stockyards Bank
Sunday went a sports stalk on news radio six thirty
w LAP.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
Was this an anomaly?

Speaker 1 (33:17):
That's the one thing I like to see or ask
football basketball in the sport I watch.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
Is this a pattern that we're creating? Are we trending?
Is this a pattern?

Speaker 1 (33:25):
Because there was a huge win in Knoxville, as Jeff stated,
and you enjoyed that win, and then for us to
show up and the lineup changes and a lot of
different things. Are we trending in the direction of the
of the Arkansas game, or are we the team that
we played at Tennessee with or without Butler.

Speaker 6 (33:50):
Yeah, this team just has.

Speaker 7 (33:51):
A really frustrating ability to win all the incredible, high profile,
you know, ranked games I in six and one and
against top fifteen opponents. I mean, that is a resume
better than just about anybody else in college basketball. The
issue is they've also lost you know, they're one in

(34:11):
five and unranked Power five matchups as well. So there's
there's just got to be a middle ground there where
we can I mean, I want to keep the impressive
wins rolling, but we also can't keep losing to these
kind of you know, no name mediocre opponents. And like,

(34:32):
I'll even you know, consider Arkansas.

Speaker 6 (34:34):
That as well.

Speaker 7 (34:34):
Like, I don't think that they're they magically turn it
on and they're going to be a team that's going
to show up and you know, make an instantly tournament run.

Speaker 6 (34:41):
Like I don't think that.

Speaker 7 (34:43):
They they showed up and made shots as they are
uncharacteristic for them, But I don't think that they're magically
changed as a team. I still think that they are
a mediocre team, and it's going to show up on
Selection Sunday as likely a Quad two loss. That's going
to hurt you. That that loss probably costs can U
a seed line if I had to guess on Selection Sunday,

(35:03):
and that sucks. We just got to find a balance
of yes, we love the incredible wins, but we can't
just keep stacking these mediocre losses and take the good
wins and we can get them and just try to,
you know, avoid the ugly ones. And for whatever reason,
the Georgia's and the Vandy's and the Ohio States and
the Clemsons just keep stacking up on this team. And

(35:25):
I don't know what the rhyme or reason is for it,
but that's that's objected number one for Mark Poplock.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
You.

Speaker 7 (35:31):
You know, it'd be this team's identity more than editor
any that go down to Oxford to win that game
and then randomly lose to this mediocre South Carolina team,
because that's just what they've done and they got to
get out of that that identity for however.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
That looks, I was asking.

Speaker 1 (35:46):
I told someone a coworker who follows UK very close
in the huge fan I said, maybe this is going
to be that Kimba Walker team. Where as long as
our backs are against the wall, we're gonna come out fighting.
We're just going to rally off win win after winas
fund decent. This team doesn't have Kimball Walker, but Jack Pilgrim,
we appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (36:05):
Man.

Speaker 1 (36:05):
We're gonna catch you at a court fourteen out at
Woodford County's new Gymnasium, so we will catch you there
later on.

Speaker 2 (36:12):
But otherwise, when we.

Speaker 1 (36:14):
Come back, we're gonna have Sean Hamilton of the Firecrackers
to talk about their visit to UK women's basketball and
UK men's basketball when we come back at the top
of the hour.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
We'll be back after this year.
