Speaker 1 (00:00):
On this episode of The Heat Check, eleven games left
in the season, Yeah, a lot left to be decided.
We look at a couple of playoff teams that might
be in trouble Denver, Memphis, I'm looking at you, and
one might be playing possum. The hottest player in the league.
Who is he is? His name Denny Abdia, And we

(00:23):
break down the Celtics sale and what that means for
the NBA and franchises moving forward.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
A lot to talk about.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Drop that motherfucking beat that should be Rihanna.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
You you're listening to the Hottest, the Hottest podcast out here.
I said what I said, it's the heat the Heat Check,
Heat Checks.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
We gotta talk about Denver. Denver has been playing some
shitty basketball before your Kic got hurt. He was talking
about how you can't just turn it on when you
get to the playoffs. Who you are in the regular
season is who you are. Nikola Jokic just missed his

(01:10):
fourth straight game. That might not seem remarkable to you
in the age of Joel Embiid, Paul George Kawhi, Leonard etcetera, etcetera.
But for Nicola Jokic, that's pretty fucking time for remark.
That's when you make a mark about it. When is
the last time that that happened? So you might ask
when did Jokic last miss four games in a row?

(01:34):
The answer might shock you. Early twenty twenty one, and
that was four games as well.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
He has been one of the most durable, reliable.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Players in the NBA, especially for a seven footer. I
think probably doesn't get enough credit for that. He is,
at seven feet probably the most reliable.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Dude in the league.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
And now he's got a left ankle impingement Ooh that's
not good, and the Nuggets are calling at that, and
they've kept him out for over a week and a
half now. The problem, though, is the four teams he
sat out against are the Lakers, Warriors, Blazers, and Rockets,
all teams that they may end up facing in the
playoffs besides my Blazers. And I know Portland's currently two

(02:19):
games out of the plan. They are fifteen to ten
their last twenty five. They're on a four game winning street.
But I don't think that the Nuggets are gonna end
up playing the Portland Trailblazers. Michael Malone was asked if
resting if he was resting Jokic and Jamal Murray against
potential playoff teams, and in typical fashion, he decided to
lose his goddamn mind. He said, I think that's a

(02:40):
bunch of bullshits. I mean, in the last ten years, NICOLEA.
Jokich has played the second most games in the NBA
ten years, and the other guys in that top ten
none of them are superstars. So if Nicola is not playing,
it's because he's sitting. It's not because he needs rest.
It's because he's hurt and he's trying to play through
things that most wouldn't.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
We're at a point right now we have to do
what's best, not just.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
For Nicola but for all of our guys as we
move forward and try to close out this season. Do
the Nuggets have a problem, Well, they are currently three
and five in their last day games, two back of
the Rockets and only a game in front of the
Lakers for fourth. If Malone is playing possum, it's not

(03:25):
a great time to play possum. But Michael Malone is
a strange cat. I would not put it past a
banged up Jokic going into the playoffs. I think that's
probably a bad idea. So you just get him as
healthy as you can. We will find out soon enough.
The Nuggets have just eleven games left. It is go time, baby,

(03:47):
it is go time.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Let's move on. This team's in trouble. Trouble, trouble.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
That is the Memphis Grizzlies, folks.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
The Memphis Grizzlies have just.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Been sitting around, hanging around. Nobody's been talking about them,
nobody's been super excited about them, nobody's been low on them.
No one is talking about them. They are eight and
twelve in their last twenty games. They've dropped in the
standings like a lead balloon. Remember they were second in
the West at one point, and they are not getting
any better. They've lost four or five and that was

(04:19):
before the news that they lost Brandon Clark for the
season with a high grade pcl spring in his right knee.
Ro Rod.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
That's not good.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Oh no. They are now in fifth, half game behind
the Lakers for home court, two and a half games
out of the plan. That is how tight the West
is right now. And if you look at that eight
and twelve stretch, those eight wins came against non playoff teams,
with three of those games coming against Phoenix.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Phoenix, Okay, Phoenix fucking sucks.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
They haven't beaten a playoff team since February second, when
they took the Bucks down on the road. And let's
be honest, the Bucks have been going do their own shit.
They were zero to eight against playoff teams since that win.
Part of it has been that this team has been
banged up. Jaron Jackson's been banged up. John Moran's been
banged up intermittently. They've lost Chigi Jackson for the year.

(05:15):
Where's Vince Williams. Now that they have Adam, the team
is still bad And a lot of people are saying
that this team needed Marcus Martin, who was traded at
the deadline to the Washington Wizards, and they say that
is because they lack toughness. I think there's time to
ripe the ship, but I don't. I don't know if
anyone's afraid of the Memphis Grizzlies. This is the kind

(05:37):
of team I would wait and try to play in
the first round. Get them smooth the fuck out. The
biggest issue that the Memphis Grizzlies have they turn the
ball over way too much. They are loose with the
rock pause. They currently have the third most turnovers per game.
They're trailing only the tanking Utah Jazz and the young Trailblazers,

(05:57):
the third worst in NBA oponent points off turnovers, and
though they score a ton one hundred and twenty two
points a game, good for second in the league, they're
three points shooting and the defensive rating have fallen out
of the top ten, which is not grit and grind people.
That is not good. They are bottom ten in rebounding percentage,
which is why they are also bottom ten percent in

(06:19):
giving up fast break points. There is not a lot
of time left, Memphis, I'm rooting for you. Losing Brandon
Clark for a second straight year awful. They are now
looking at Denver or the Lakers or Golden State in
the first round, and to me, none of those options
seem very good.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
None of those options seem very fun.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
All those teams will be favored by Vegas to send
the Griz one two three can Coon. It falls on
Jaron Jackson in Jaw to put this franchise on their backs.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
And if they don't remember.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
All those rumors of the trade downline where John Morant
might be on the move.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Those rumors aren't going anywhere if they lose in the
first round. Baby, no, they are not. Let's move on.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
We gotta talk about a kid who I don't know
if he ever expected this for himself, and that's Danny Abdya.
Danny Abdya right now is bawling. And you might not
know who Danny Abby is because he plays on my team,
the Portland Trailblazers, and they're not doing a lot despite
the fact they've been very pesky as of late. The

(07:26):
Portland Trailbazers traded for Danny Abiya from the Washington Wizards,
two teams you're probably not checking for Danny Abia. He's
a young wing out of Israel, a lot of upside,
could play three and d he could attack the rim,
he can create a little bit, but he was walling
away in DC. And the Blazers right now are hotter
than fish grease. They've won fifteen of their last twenty five.

(07:49):
They're two back of the playing and guess why Danny
Danny Danny Abya is that guy. Right now, Danny Abby
is taking over as a legitimate franchise player for a
team that is looking for a franchise player ever since
getting rid of trading Davian Lillard away. In his last

(08:10):
six games where the Blazers are four and two. By
the way, Danny is averaging check this deat line off
twenty seven points, eleven rebounds, six assists, with one and
a half stock stock stocks per game. His net rating
is plus eight point two, shooting fifty seven percent from
three and an insane seventy percent effective field goal percentage.

(08:34):
Safe to say, almost no one in the league right
now over the past two weeks is playing better than
this guy. The season average is like fine sixteen seven
to four, put him in the running for Most Improved.
But since the All Star break, holy shit, this is
a guy next year who can win Most Improved if
he does what he's doing right now. Twenty two nine
and five. Since the All Star break, we have ourselves

(08:56):
a little baby star emerging. And head coach Chauncey Phillips
of the Portland Trailblazers not the Detroit Pistons said after
the Blazers dismantled the Nuggets on Saturday, he said, I
think Denny is learning a lot about Denny at the moment.
I think that's the way that we're playing with. The
pace that we're playing at it suits him. Denny's been
incredible again. I tell you we're learning more about each

(09:19):
other the whole time. I think the way we're playing
with pace, it suits him. I always say that people
who play with force do well in this league. He
plays with a ton of force, and I like everything
that he's doing. Denny himself, he knows what as well.
He said. He was asked about his recent play, and
he said, I don't think I've played this well before,

(09:39):
and I think I knew I had it in me.
What do we like about Denny? Here's what we like.
He's still a baby. He's still got the bottle in
his mouth. Folks. He's been in the league five years,
but he just turned twenty four. Secondly, the dude is
the most team friendly contract in the NBA. Can you
say de escalator? De escalator? The Blazers got him for

(10:00):
four years, fifty five million, but he's only gonna be
making eleven point eight million dollars in twenty twenty eight.
That's the most team friendly contract for a guy like
him I've ever seen. Do you know who's making eleven
million dollars in the league right now, Guys that you
don't want on your team cause they're that bad.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
Are you fucking kidding me?

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Twenty points a game, guys get twenty five million a year. Third,
he's an electric rebounder, helps a ton. He's six'. Nine
he can play the, three he can play the, four
he can.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Play small ball.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Five his defensive rating is one fifteen point, seven which
is improved of the past. Seasons BUT i think he's
actually better than. THAT i think he's much better than.
That not long after The All star, Break danny was
asked what he needed to work on this. Offseason he
said he wants to add a little floater in the. Game,
oh he said he wants to improve his court vision

(10:52):
and his ball handling. Skills BUT i think what he
really needs to work on on top of the floater
is the more general mid range. Jumper he takes less
than six percent of his shots between ten and twenty four,
feet AND i think that needs to be. Fixed you
have to be a three level score to be a
star in this. League but he's literally right now the
BEST iso scorer in THE. Nba his effective field goal

(11:14):
percentage IN iso situations is sixty four. Percent ahead Of Kevin,
Durant luca Cam, Thomas Jalen. Brunson those are the next,
four which is even more important when you consider that
his running Mate Jeremy grant is dead last in the
league with AN iso effective field goal percentage of sixteen point.
Seven that is a holy. Shit get this fucking guy
out of your stat and let me tell you how

(11:38):
Much Jeremy grant is getting. Paid and, Listen i'm not pocket.
Watching i'm not pocket, watching but we're talking About denny
making eleven million dollars in twenty twenty. Eight my, Man
Jeremy grant five, years one hundred and sixty million. Dollars
that makes me want to throw up in my fucking.
Mouth when he was, TRADED i don't think anyone saw this.

(11:59):
Coming But denny keeps making strides in all aspects of
his game and it's making that trade look smarter and
smarter every day For. Portland and remember the head of
the scouting, Department Mike, schmidt When denny was drafted by
The Washington. Wizards he was working FOR espn at the

(12:20):
time and was like in love with. Him it's infatuated
With danny's, game so it's not surprising that when he
first got his potential hands on him pause he did.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
It do not sleep on These.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Blazers do not sleep On, denny because they just might
be causing waves this, season but probably.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Next season as.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
Well moving, on you've probably heard now the news The
Boston celtics have a new. Owner longtime Owner Wick gruspeck
has sold the franchise for a record six point one
billion dollars to Build. Jism, no to Build oh, chisholm

(13:00):
my bad and that was just my my. Dyslexia. FUCK
i don't. Care IF i had six point one billion
dollars to pay for a, team you'd call me jism
anytime you want.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
It gives a fuck. Anyway who is this?

Speaker 1 (13:14):
GUY i don't.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
Know i'm. Disrespected i'm left and.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Right When sham's dropped the, news people were scrambling like
where did he come? From we thought that the guy
who was second in command To Win gruspek was.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Gonna own the.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
Team, Nope wick, Said i'm selling this baby to the highest.
Bidder i'm not allowing any hometown. Discounts this was the
largest purchase in the of An american sports sports franchise in,
history and we were.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Like who is? He where did he come?

Speaker 1 (13:47):
From he's the managing partner Of Symphony Technology. Group their
MO o has been we purchased small tech, companies we,
leveraged leverage their intellectual. Property, basically we steal their innovation
and we sell them out for big. Bucks and they
have been wildly. Successful founded By chisholm and his partners

(14:08):
in twenty twenty twenty two thousand and. Two excuse, me
they are said to have over ten to twelve billion in,
assets And chisholm owns fifty percent of the. Firm so
he's kind of Like Steve baumer, esque except for we
don't know who the Fuck symphony is. REALLY i Know,
microsoft BUT i do not Know. Symphony chisholm is A

(14:30):
massachusetts born and bred. Guy he Led Brooks High school
to a soccer. Championship he was a Rabid celtics, fan
said to having an encyclopedic knowledge of their. History oh,
boy we got another. One we got another. ONE a
nerd in the room who knows everything about the. Team
the fascinating thing is that he's not considered to be

(14:52):
a billionaire By, forbes and YET nba rules require that
the lead owner have a fifteen percent financial interest in the.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Team so there's some funny money math going.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
On so he'd have to pony up about nine hundred
and fifteen million dollars to complete the. Deal SO i
think he is a. Billionaire i'm pretty. Sure here's what
he had to say after news broke that his bid was.
Accepted he, said growing up on The North shore and
attending college In New, England i've been a Diehard celtics

(15:20):
fan my entire. LIFE i understand how important The celtics
are of the city Of. Boston the role of the
team plays in the community is different than any other
city in the. Country, racism that's what it. Is, No i'm.
Kidding part of the, deal that's not the only reason
that they're. Unique part of the deal is That groosbeg
will continue to run The celtics for three more. Years

(15:42):
we Don't here's the thing that's really interesting is that
we don't actually know. That Wit grousbec, said this is
what we know for. Sure Wit grousbec said that our
man gism, said, hey could.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
You run the team for three more?

Speaker 1 (16:00):
Years we've earned nothing From chisholm as whether that is.
True remember remember, that remember When Mark cuban sat up
there and was, like, Yeah i'm gonna still be in
charge of the. Maps they want me to stay on
the what are those idiots' names, again the some.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Bullshit you, know The.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
Dumonts The dumonts want me to stay on and continue
to run the. Team And i'm gonna be the. Governor
there's only one, governor, Folks there's only one. Chief and
then there's a bunch of little associates and lieutenants running,
around but there's only one head. Honcho AND i am

(16:41):
very curious to know whether that really will be With.
Grusbeck and, listen if it's not in, paper it did not.
Happen SO i don't care What Chisholm chism's told him
prior to the ink being. Dry but in three, months six,
months nine, months whenever they want him, out they you
can kick him the fuck. Out but if you're A celtics,

(17:04):
fan you'll breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the
new owners are New englanders that are Passionate celtics fans
and want to keep adding to the success of this.
Team the thing That i'm very curious about as well
is this is a very expensive, team a lot of roster.
Spots you've got Al horford probably won more. Money you

(17:26):
Got Jalen brown getting, paid you Got tatum getting, paid
you Got Derrick white getting, paid you Got Christas porzingis getting.
Paid a lot of guys getting their. Chicken and new
owners don't love paying six billion to have huge salaries
on their. Roster so we're gonna see that friction between
fan and. Businessman, Anyway Bill chisholm's, wife she, Uh she

(17:53):
was asked last night was she loved about The, celtics
and she, said before her husband bought the, team she
was literally obsessed with Coach Joe miszula. Obsessed thank god
he May udoka is no longer coaching this team because
boy oh, BOY.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
I, kid it's a bad. Joke i'm.

Speaker 1 (18:15):
Sorry, anyway here's a fascinating. Thing six point one billion
is a lot of. Money that is a lot of.
Money they were not valued nearly at that. Amount they
were valued By sportico at five point one two. Billion
that's an extra billion dollars just on top and that
was right after they won the. Title that was the

(18:36):
fourth highest valuation in THE nba and the most ever
paid for a. Franchise before that Was Matt eshbia's four
billion that he paid for The Phoenix. Suns and let's be,
honest The Boston celtics are a much better. Market that,
number of course was blown away to twenty percent or.
Evaluation holy. Shit and Now Adam silver's, like hmm, hm,

(18:57):
this this expansion team is my end up being good.
Business originally the price tag for AN nba franchise was
four billi, interestingly the same Price matt is should be
paid for The. Suns but now the rumor is yesterday's
price ain't today's. Price we're talking six' seven billion for a,

(19:18):
new team which is one insane.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
Outrageous but also guil what you.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
Can get teams come for sale pretty, much never so
there's bound to Be a bezos out there or Some
other saudi prints that wants to throw some billionaire change
at the leak at. The league but a team with,
no history no marketing engine, in place without a fan
base being valued at seven billion right, off rip that

(19:45):
seems a bit ridiculous. TO me i. DON'T know i
would wait for another team Like The memphis grizzlies or
something to go. For sale the finance of the finances
OF the nba have officially reached. Insane status we Are
now i'm going to see team valuations reach, ten billion
but not. Anytime soon but we're also on the cusp

(20:07):
of players making eighty million. A YEAR so i took TO.
CHAT gpt, I know i got to have some help
here with research to assess the total VALUE of Nba,
in america taking into account the economic impact of basketball
and ALL thirty. Nbac cities and this is what, it

(20:28):
said THAT the nba is a one hundred and seventy
five billion dollar Industry. In america and as a, FOLLOW
up i asked how much the NBA's economic footprint was in.
Twenty ten the answer was. Fifteen BILLION the nba has
increased in value eleven times in. Fifteen years in, other

(20:49):
words in, Ten Years bill chisholm's investment for six point
one might seem like. A, Bargain anyway we're still in
the te transition of. The podcast thanks for. Being patient
the transition. Is underway i'm not really responsible or in
charge or have any decision making ability for when it,

(21:10):
moves over but it. Will happen we'll get back to
a regular. Schedule soon that is all the time that
we have for this Episode Of The. Heat check Come,
