action never stopped.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Hey, good morning and welcome in. It is ay Tuesday,
Chuck Powell, Bucket, Jacobson and Ashley Ryan with you and
ready to deliver four hours of sports talk radio. That's
where we go all the way until ten o'clock here
this morning and all sorts of those familiar guests, familiar
voices that you've heard right here with us on Chuck
and Buck coming your way here today, aren't you really?
(01:36):
I mean, I mean, I don't know. I realized what
I got into when I moved here. I've never really
complained about the weather. But we've had enough rain, had
enough rain.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
It wasn't really rained too bad this morning, though, right
was it.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
I'm not saying this morning. I'm just being in general
like it just like it won't stop raining. Yeah, man,
had enough, had enough for a little while. Maybe maybe
we can get a little break from.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
It, Yeah, make a break.
Speaker 6 (02:01):
I mean, I just love how green it is. And
every time I get to where, I'm like, man, I'm damp.
I'm damp. I don't like being damp. I'm like, well,
it is beautiful. I got to look around and remember
that's why we It's as beautiful as it is most
of the year.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Well, Josh Naylor was obviously not scared away by the
rain and drawn to the beauty that is the Pacific Northwest.
Because our first Baseman made it official yesterday. He has
signed a brand new deal five years, ninety two point
five million dollars Josh Naylor is going to remain a
Seattle Mariner. There will be a press conference a little
(02:37):
bit later on today we'll get to hear those kernels
of wisdom from one of the smartest, most intelligent, most
thoughtful people in all of Major League Baseball, Josh Naylor,
and also the principles that made it happen. So that's
coming a little bit later on today. We'll have a
chance tomorrow to kind of react to what we heard.
(02:57):
But certainly, I mean, I think it's one of those stories,
and I've been here a decade now and it's just
one of those stories where it just looks like it
worked out for more people than anything that I think
that we've come across that the front office got what
they want. Maybe the ownership didn't get exactly what they wanted,
(03:20):
but they did what they needed to do. Fan base
got what they want, media got what they want, and
based off of Josh Naylor's printed words yesterday, he got
exactly what he wanted as well.
Speaker 6 (03:32):
Seems like he fell in love with this place. Yeah,
that's great. I mean, you know, that's one of the
things you were hoping for, right is that when he
would get here and he did get here before there
was any rain. He got here right at the best
possible time when it comes to the weather, and so
maybe that was part of it. I think the way
in which the season went, you know, he had some
big moments. Then he gets to kind of reap the
(03:55):
rewards of what that feels like and how embraced he
was by the fan base. I think that there's you know,
kind of kudos to the fan base because I think
in large part when he was gonna possibly miss games
because of the birth of his first kid, I think
that there's some other fan bases that would have been like, no,
you do not miss a baseball game for that, And
(04:16):
I don't think that was the overarching thought here. I
think that may have played into the whole thing, but
it probably mostly comes down to Jimmy Naylor just thinking
I really like this group of guys and I think
that they're you know, that it's a good team and
kind of wants to continue the ride that he got
to jump in on halfway through the season and maybe
(04:38):
see if he can help take this team to heights
that they have never reached.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Well, you know, there it was a little bit dangerous
letting him hit the free agent market. I mean you
can kind of go back to the offseason where in
Stove Anders and I talked about the entire offseason the
addition of Josh Naylor. They decided not to make that
change her and then they do it at the trading deadline,
(05:02):
and fine, you got him at the trading deadline. You
got him when it matters the most, and he helped
us win a division and certainly had enough time to
win over the fan base and be won over by
the organization and by the city. So it all worked out.
But had you add like a full gear with him,
maybe it would have been easier. Maybe you wouldn't have
(05:23):
run the risk of him getting to free agency. But
there certainly was a little bit of risk of him
getting to free agency. I mean the Mets, the Yankees,
the Red Sox, those are all three of the biggest
spenders in the sport, and they all need first basement.
Speaker 6 (05:40):
I mean, the.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Dodgers don't need one, Cubs don't need one, but those
three are all looking for first basement this offseason. So
when you let free agency begin and Josh Naylor was
not signed, I mean, he probably waits this out the
right way, and he probably makes more money than what
he ended up signing with. He probably gets those three
(06:03):
teams into a bidding war once Alonso Pete Alonso chooses
one of them over the other, then all of a
sudden he's got an opportunity to possibly cash in on
a bigger prize.
Speaker 6 (06:15):
But I love the fact. I love the fact that the.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Mariners were out in front of this and that Josh Naylor,
and this would have been my judge of his personality,
wasn't about the highest offer that.
Speaker 6 (06:28):
He could get.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
He could have waited this out and saw if there
was a larger offer to get, but instead the Mariners
met him with a reasonable market value offer. My guess
is they probably wanted him for a four year deal,
maybe at eighty and he's like, Eh, this is my
one chance to really make my money in the major leagues,
(06:53):
So what I'm gonna do is ask for a five
and then I think that they probably did settle on that.
But the Mariners obviously came out of the gates with
something that he and his agency felt was very reasonable,
and he obviously didn't need to go test the market.
Why do I need to see greener pastures. I'm perfectly
(07:13):
happy here, I got the offer that I was hoping
for leading up to this process. I'm not gonna let
my agent screw this up for me. This is a
great place for me to be. This is a potentially
great team for the next few years, and I'm going
to be making great money, so i don't need to
make the most money.
Speaker 6 (07:34):
I'm happy with what we've got.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
So I think there were a lot of things that
went to work here that really worked out well, including
ownership offering something of reasonable market value right out of
the shoot.
Speaker 6 (07:47):
He definitely didn't play the long game. I mean, I
would have to think that as somebody else. The second
that the World Series was over and he could have
received calls or his agent could she calls it, somebody
would have been calling. I think that's we know that
the ownership, in the front office and the team, everybody
(08:07):
in Seattle was wanting Josh Naylor back, and I think
that they had said stuff like that that was well.
I know that the front office is that that's our
number one priority right when the season was over, right
and even before that, I think they probably had had
talks about like, well, you are a good fit here,
whether it's staying around the batting cage or bs and
in the clubhouse, and whether or not that was a hey,
(08:28):
we got a job to do right now, I could
see him being like, we got a job to do.
We'll take care of that business when it's time to
take care of that business. So I'm not sure how
it worked. If it was all right, you're a free
agent now, please let us have final say, right if
somebody contacts you, please let us have final say, or
if he was just playing and simple. He loved the clubhouse,
(08:49):
he loved the city, he loved what the potential is
here in Seattle, And basically they just started working on
this deal from the get go. Regardless of what was
going on behind the scenes, the front office stayed true
to their their their path or their plan, which was
we we went out there, we got this guy the
trade deadline. They you know, they don't like giving up
(09:11):
prospects to do that, and then doing so, you gave
up the basically the closest thing to a major league
ready first baseman and Tyler Locklear, and so I think
that they would like to they would have liked to
figure out how this thing went. And then as the
season went on, as the second half went on with
himbe it probably became even more apparently we not only
would we like to keep him, we can't not keep
(09:33):
this guy. If we can get him for the right price,
then we you know, if we don't have to get
into a bidding war with somebody that would overpay for
his services, then let's do that. So they were on it.
They were on it from the get go. I'm sure
that they just were like, dude, just please here, take
this whatever whatever the cost is, if it's in this
in this realm, let's get this job done. And I'm
glad that they did because I think that he's He's
(09:55):
a guy that kind of brings a heartbeat to the
team that they were missing. I think as far as
the Ghos.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Well, there's the other side of it. If they don't
get this deal done with him, who, I don't know
where you're searching for your first basement, because you're right,
they traded away the first basement of the closest thing
to the first basement of the future.
Speaker 6 (10:14):
To get him, which we're all good with.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
And they obviously aren't going to go out there and
pay top dollar for free agencies free agency players. So
Pete Alonso and Cody Bellinger might very well price themselves
out of the Seattle market. And if you don't keep
Naylor and he's on with one of those other teams, Now,
(10:37):
where are you searching? Where are you getting your first basement?
You've got this massive hole now at first base and
a pretty thin market. I mean Murakami, he's a third baseman,
but there's talk that he might move to first base
pretty quickly. But you did avoid by making this and
getting this done right now. Man, if I'm Jerry, if
(10:59):
I'm just an and I'm looking at my off season checklist,
which I don't think is very deep, by the way,
just to warn people, if I'm looking at my off
season checklist, man, that first base, that nailer thing. I
felt so good going back to that piece of paper
and marking that check because I don't not only do
I get what I wanted, and I'm the first person
(11:20):
in the entire offseason, I'm the first franchise to get
what I wanted this offseason. I don't have to worry
about not having Josh Naylor. And I mean that's that's
killing two birds with one stone right there.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (11:33):
Yeah, the market's then, and yet it's an important position.
One the position and how well he plays it defensively,
but that spot in the lineup too, just the middle
of the lineup guy. And then again the intangibles, the
things that you can't find on a spreadsheet or a
stat sheet of what he brings to the table is
something I don't know for sure if it's out there.
(11:54):
I mean, yeah, you got some higher priced guys, some
guys that maybe are have higher upside offensively, you know,
like the Polar Bear for example. I mean, I don't
see Josh Naylor hitting forty fifty home runs, and that's
fine because he also steals thirty bags. But I do
see him as bringing something to the table that I
don't know Pete Alonso, but I would be willing to
(12:16):
bet he doesn't have that same thing, that same grit,
that same thing that is it's hard to put. You know,
there's no number really that you can't put on it.
And yet they went out there and probably put a
number up there that maybe was a little bit more
made them a little bit more uncomfortable. I mean, it's
the most they've ever spent on a free agent since
you know, Jerry Depoto and Hollander have been in control
(12:38):
of those things. So I'm sure it made them a
little bit uncomfortable. At the same time, it's not like
you're going out there and spending you know, ninety two
million bucks on somebody you don't know for sure how
they're gonna meld with the rest of the team. You
just basically added a guy to the nucleus of this
team for the next five years. And I'm all for it.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
You know.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
I keep hearing that that that's the most they've ever spent,
didn't they sign Robbie Ray to a five year, one
fifteen million dollar deal.
Speaker 6 (13:01):
Position players?
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Oh, position players, Okay, that's what they're saying. I mean
I kept hearing that. I'm well, it's not like they've
never done this before.
Speaker 6 (13:09):
And the Depoto era now position players, yeah, I mean
the Cano was before that, but that was before Depoto. Yeah,
that was before Depoto.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (13:16):
As far as position players go, Mitch Garver was the
biggest one.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
That worked out.
Speaker 6 (13:22):
Well, it didn't work out at all, No, that didn't.
I had that one walk, remember big walk.
Speaker 7 (13:27):
I do think that.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
I love that Bucky missed the big game that Garver had,
like the like the Cubs game. You didn't even see it.
It's the one game that he contributed mightily to. It's
almost like God willed that to happen.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Yeah, now I'm.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Gonna save Bucky from seeing this guy one good moment.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
I tried.
Speaker 6 (13:44):
I stuck by that side, Guy's side as long as
I could.
Speaker 8 (13:47):
I do. Like though, like as far as the Naylor
signing goes, it it helps the Mariners in the sense
that here's here's what we told you is how we
like to do things. We like to bring in people
at the trade deadline. We like to make sure that
they fall in love with the city. We like to
see how things go, and then you know, look, this
worked out just how we kind of talked about it
after the season when we were asked about trade deadline
(14:08):
and free agency and all of these things. And then
on top of it, now you've you've built all this
excitement and this goodwill going to the playoffs, and now
you're showing, look, yeah, we recognized it, we saw what
it did, and now we're going to do something about it,
and you're building continuing that goodwill with the fans, which
goodness knows is needed.
Speaker 6 (14:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Well, and that, like I said, this sort of felt
like an obvious go go for it kind of situation.
And I don't know what they would have been left
with had they not worked this out with the Nailor.
It would have it might have been searching high and
low to try to come up with something that they
felt because they don't do anything that is not financially
(14:52):
that they're not financially okay with. They're not going to
just go, oh, we didn't couldn't get Nailer. We have
no choice. We gotta spend whatever it takes to get Alonso.
That's not out they operate. So I mean for this
to get done this quickly, man, let the good times roll.
I think this is yeah to your point. I think
this is some great momentum heading into the off season.
I think it's the biggest priority. I think that they
(15:14):
will make a priority out of Jorge Polanco next. I
gotta believe that it's Polonco or Sworez and not Polonco
and Sworez that will be brought back or will be
made a priority here in the off season.
Speaker 6 (15:30):
I don't really know beyond that how aggressive that they'll be.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
I don't I mean, they'll make some moves, but keep
in mind last off season was about as dry an
off season as you could spind and it ended up
with an AL West title. I don't think beyond Naylor
and Polanco they are going to be all that aggressive
this off season. And I frankly think that if they
(15:55):
get Naylor and Polonko, it's gonna be kind of a
feed up on the desk. Ah, all right, whatever happens
from here, you know, we're good. Those are the two
things we wanted to get achieved before the new year.
Speaker 6 (16:08):
Yeah, well, I mean those are the two big ones, right,
And I think that's probably because of what you just said,
where this isn't an organization and I don't think this
is where. I don't think Tiger will change its stripes drastically,
and they're not going to go like, you know what
that was, that playoff run was really fun. Let's completely
change our financial philosophy and just spend bigger than everybody.
(16:29):
They're not going to do it now, maybe go outside
their comfort zone. But this is one where all right,
we'll go ahead and do that because of how the
cross section of where what we need and what he
brings and how it fits and all that stuff goes
hand in hand. And yet they still have plenty of
moves to make, but I think that I'm with you
that it's probably just two, two guys that you had,
(16:50):
that you bring those guys back. Hopefully it's two. I
hope it's not just one. Hopefully we get Polonko as well.
And I would choose Polonco far before Gino Suarez, even
though I love Gino. I just I just think that
pol Uncle has a little bit more of that grit
as well, a little bit more gurr and a little
less good times. Yeah, and so.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Well, look, I think they'll kick the tires. I mean,
that's just what they do. They kick the tires on everything.
They're gonna be thorough. But if they get those two
significant pieces done, I think that I think they'll look
at it as a successful offseason no matter what happens
from there. All right, So Josh Naylor press conference a
little bit later on today, Let's find out what is
(17:33):
on tap for the rest of our radio show.
Speaker 4 (17:37):
What's on tap?
Speaker 2 (17:40):
What's on tap?
Speaker 9 (17:41):
All right?
Speaker 1 (17:41):
Naylor's deal five years, ninety two point five million dollars
with no deferrals, going to underline that we actually pay
our guys what we say we're going to pay them.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Oh, so he's not getting paid in twenty forty.
Speaker 6 (17:55):
Yeah, it's weird.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
H wish everybody had to do that, but yes, Josh
Naylor press conference a little bit later on today. Also
coming up a little bit later on today, we will
do a Josh Naylor Sped Up Stove podcast. Anders Hearst
and I. We usually do it on Thursdays, but we're
going to do it today. Also, I have written out
(18:18):
my Crystal Ball forecast for the off season twenty twenty
five slash twenty twenty six, and so that will be
debuted a little bit later on today as well. College
football playoff rankings. It's a Tuesday, so we'll get the
brand new list. We'll go over that a little bit
later on this hour at six forty five. The latest
on that front, interesting surprise twist perhaps to tonight's reveal,
(18:44):
So we'll talk about that at six forty five. Rick
new Iaa will join us today at nine o'clock as well.
Some other news from college football, as James Franklin already
has his brand new job. So the first you know,
Ball drops some MLB free agency here in Seattle. Well,
this coaching cycle that is happening right in the middle
(19:05):
of the season, also at its first shoe drop as well.
James Franklin picked up by Virginia Tech, so he'll be
their next head coach there for the Hokies. Speaking of
newheisl the fighting Jerry Neuheisel's will be taken on the
Washington Huskies this week and so we start the preview
of that matchup. Seahawks loss to LA We're still suffering
(19:27):
from that a little bit. Greg Bell will be with
us at seven five. We had a lot of the
ground to cover yesterday with Greg that we didn't get to,
so we'll try it today. He also has a Gray's
Abel update for USS hearing good news yesterday that they
came back with some positive results from the testing that
was done on Gray's Abel. So we'll get the latest
(19:47):
from Greg coming up At seven five Monday Night football,
Pete Carroll and the Raiders lose to the Dallas Cowboys,
kind of a blowout, thirty three to sixteen the final
score there. We'll play some Factor fiction at seven thirty
five today, cracking or in Detroit taking on the Red Wings,
maybe even sleeping all of them at Everett Fitzhugh's mom's house.
I would imagine everybody just having a little sleep over.
Speaker 4 (20:08):
I bet that's delicious food.
Speaker 6 (20:10):
That's what I imagine.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Anyway, Missus Fitzhugh taking care of all the cracking tonight
as they get ready for their game against the Red Wings.
And looks like Victor wembn Yama, who's off to an
MVP like start, is heard again and may miss several
weeks for the San Antonio Spurs. All right, coming up next,
is there really some panic meters going off here regarding
(20:33):
our quarterback in Seattle? And how does that panic meter
compare to some other ones across the National Football League
at the coveted quarterback position. We sound the alarms next
on Chuck and Buck Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM,
one twenty to go.
Speaker 10 (20:49):
In the second quarter, Cowboys down with the thirty seven
yard line of the Raiders, the quarterback Dan Prescott in
the gun. There's the snap, bakes, the handoff, four man
five man rush, throws across the middle, catch it the
fifteen out of the twenty and going on the far
sikes furbing him.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
That is a touchdown. And that was George Pickens who
got it and.
Speaker 10 (21:08):
Ran backwards and went on that far sideline to curl
around defenders and takes it in and pickens a thirty
seven yard touchdown reception. Chris Scott has thrown his third
touchdown tonight, one to each of his top targets, Lamb
Ferguson and Pickens.
Speaker 11 (21:25):
Devin Harland.
Speaker 12 (21:26):
Westwood won on the call last night Monday Night Football
as the Dallas Cowboys do win over the Las Vegas
Raiders by a final score of thirty three to sixteen.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
That concludes this week in the National Football League, and
we'll slowly start revving up to next week for the
Seahawks coming off a loss that will be against the
Tennessee Titans this week. Also, we got a pretty positive
update on Gray's Zabel.
Speaker 6 (21:54):
We'll get more.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Information coming up with Greg Bell here in a matter
of moments. Good morning to you, seven o'clock out. We're
here on this Tuesday. Ashley Ryan is here, former Mariner,
Bucky Jacobson. My name is Chuck Powell. Let's check your
Frost Brood, choose Chill Corp's light headlines, and we will
go to college football where the college football playoff rankings,
the latest are out tonight this evening. I believe they
(22:16):
go down at four thirty. There should be a little
bit of a shakeup. We should have a new number
twelve certainly, and Oklahoma should jump into the rankings this
week after their win over Alabama. But how far will
Klein de Boor and the tide fall We'll find out
later on today. Also from college football, James Franklin has
(22:37):
a new home, greed to a deal with the Virginia
Tech Hokies yesterday. Husky's getting ready for their matchup with
UCLA on Saturday. Elsewhere, you've got the Kraken in Detroit
tonight to take on the Red Wings. You can hear
that action right here at Sports Radio ninety three point
three KJRFM. From the NBA, Wimby's gonna miss a few
(22:57):
weeks he's injured again. You dubs an action and hoops
tonight against Southern at Mighty Southern. And Josh Naylor later
today will meet with the press.
Speaker 6 (23:08):
He made his new.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Deal official yesterday. He signed the papers on a brand
new five year deal for ninety two point five million
dollars per season. Today he'll be introduced at a press
conference along with all of the powers that be with
the Seattle Mariners. So Josh Naylor will be back and
for years to come as the first basement of DMS.
(23:33):
I think most people are excited about that. Also, they
are just as excited about hearing from Greg.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
Bell this morning.
Speaker 3 (23:39):
With the bell tolls, it must be seven o'clock and
time for twelfth Man News with Greg Bell, brought to

Speaker 6 (24:05):
He's just living a fancy life right now. He's very fancy.
He is very very fancy. He's drinking some coffee with
Pinky up right now.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Oh do you think, well we got Greg give us
a play by play of your coffee.
Speaker 11 (24:16):
Drinking not existing. My wife drinks more coffee than probably
all four of us put together. But yeah, no fancy.
No one's ever accused me OF's.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
Fancy, all right, not quite wrong. I think you know
me better than that.
Speaker 6 (24:34):
All right, Well, let's dive into this. Gray's Abel.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
That's what's first and foremost on my mind. I guess
they got some good news yesterday.
Speaker 11 (24:43):
They did really positive according to Mike McDonald, no structural damage.
MRI is showing that he doesn't have a major knee injury.
It's not season ending. The words that McDonald used that
he was told was day to day. Of course, he said,
you know what that means. That could be truly day
to day, could be week to week, could be a
couple of weeks. But the status for Tennessee for him
(25:06):
will determine probably the end of the week. Wouldn't expect
him to practice yesterday. But when he was on both
knees and down face mask into the turf for a
multiple man two or three minutes right below me in
the press box Sunday in Englewood, it looked worse than
what we got the news of yesterday, SAIDs positive se
Oark news for sure. I wrote the news tribute that's
(25:29):
probably worthy of a parade for how good Grey's Abel
has been. Because Christian Haynes coming in is a big, big,
big drop off, and if he doesn't, ifs Able can't
play on Sunday in Nashville, it would be Christian Haynes
who just came up off injured reserve, but it's not
season ending. They will have grays Abel back and that's
a big deal.
Speaker 6 (25:49):
Obviously, you don't want to overlook anybody. And yet if
there is a team that you might be able to
get away with not rushing him back, it would be
the Titans. I mean, is this situation where thinking about
the long term not just the rest of this season.
Obviously you don't look too terribly far past that, but
you do. This guy's young and whatnot? I mean, is
(26:10):
this one where if he's good to go, they're gonna
put him out there no matter what, or is there
any chance they'll just be a little bit more cautious
considering the opponent.
Speaker 11 (26:19):
Well, if he is good to go, he'll play, and
the Seahawks historic go. Their medical staff has been somewhat conservative,
where for a guy has any chance of making it
worse and injuring himself worth he doesn't play, so for insance,
he doesn't practice all week, he probably wouldn't play. And
you're right, they never admit it. But I thought Ernest
(26:39):
Jones didn't play against Arizona so he could play against
the Rams, and they boat rased Arizona, so they could
play the Rams, and Jones was fine to do that,
although he hit up a big bulky brace as you
probably saw outside of his uniform. To answer your question, Yeah,
if there was ever a game you'd rest the guy
to Habby for the rest of the season, be this.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
One still classic trap game, classic trap game. I know
tendency is terrible, but I mean, you can't sleep on
anybody in the NFL. Greg Bellismo our Seahawks inside It
joins us nearly every day at this time to talk
some Seahawks football. Sam Donald was obviously the big topic
of conversation on yesterday's radio program. Is there a chance here, Greg,
(27:19):
that maybe he just faced a really good defense, like
a better defense than he's faced all season long, and
that maybe they did some good things that confused them
versus Sam Donald just doesn't show up against the Rams
or any big game.
Speaker 11 (27:36):
Yeah, And that's what happened. And I wrote that yesterday
for the News Tribune that Cooper Cup talked about the
Rams changing safeties and their safeties Kinchens in particular. Kitchens
is killing them. He's got three interceptions in two games,
not counting the JV game. At the end of last season,
against them. Kinchins is the guy who at one hundred
and three yard interception return from Gino Smith in the
(27:56):
home game Seattle had lost overtime less season. Kitchens has
two interceptions on Sunday, standing in the middle of.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Fields with safety.
Speaker 11 (28:05):
The second one is the second of Kitchens's interceptions, the
third of Darnald's fourth is the one that told me
that they were tricking him because Kitchens was standing in
the middle of the field and Arroyo ran a steam
route with a cover man underneath him, and Darnald threw
it as if he never.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Knew Kitchens was on the field. Just Kitchens was.
Speaker 11 (28:27):
Like a center fielder who just caught a line drive
that was hit to him. It was as simple as that.
Took one step up interception and Cooper Cup after the
game said that the Rams showed heavy box at the
snap and ran out. He didn't say Kitchens by name,
but it was often Kitchens who ran out to essentially
have two deep coverage shell coverage after it looked like
(28:48):
it was single high at the snap, and so yeah,
when I asked Donald about that, he said, yeah, they
did that, and they were good at moving their personnel
and they got really good players, but a lot of.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Teams he said do that.
Speaker 11 (29:00):
But suffice to say that it wasn't just Donald forcing
it in, which he did do on the sideline on
a late outrud as he was getting hit trying to
hit Smith and Jigba for his second interception, but the
first and the third. The Kitchens in particular told me
that he was tricked and fooled by their scheming safeties.
(29:20):
I'm not. It's not like he walked into that stadium
and said, oh, here we go again.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
I don't think that.
Speaker 11 (29:26):
But the bigger question is the Seahawks and Donald have
not beaten the top team. We mentioned the combined records
coming into the game of the team the seven wins,
the Seahawks had twenty two and thirty four. With the
combined records of the teams they'd beaten the Steelers, the saying,
the Cardinals twice, Texans, the Jaguars. So that's a problem
(29:50):
that they haven't been any of the top seven teams,
the playoff contenders, including the forty nine Ers and the
Rams in their own division. That's a bigger deal than
the Ghosts, and it's the Rams. It's the Seahawks who
are they they're seven to three and they've only beaten
middling and losing teams, and the teams they have to
be to win the division they still haven't beat.
Speaker 6 (30:09):
Yeah, the well, I mean, they got what seven games left,
and so I'm interested. To me this was a measuring stick,
measuring stick game right where it was. It was definitely
the toughest opponent you'd faced, and it was for you know,
the division lead at this point in time. And so
is there a part of you that came out of
a loss feeling even better than how you were feeling
(30:34):
about them or no?
Speaker 11 (30:35):
No, I have more doubts about them. They This isn't
a moral victory league. Everyone's paid to win the games
to especially the division games. And I have more doubts
about the Seahawks than I did going into it. And
you're right, it wasn't measuring stick and they failed to
measure up. That's twice now, the forty nine ers at
home and the Rams on the road that they've lost.
(30:57):
And that is a concern that you can't win in
your division because here we go wild card first round
at Philadelphia or Detroit and they're done. It's the same
thing they've done for most of the last decades since
the last NFC Championship game they were in, and that
was in twenty fifteen. So where are they For all
they've done, changing offensive staff, Mike McDonald, new quarterback, trading
(31:22):
Geno Smith, trading Russell Wilson four or three years ago,
where are they if they can't beat the Rams and
it's forty nine ers, They're at the same place they
were before they did all those things right, and the aggregate,
A bunch of things have changed. The furniture has moved,
but the dining room is still the same. That's the
bigger problem they have. Yes, McDonald has been big and
(31:44):
made big strides, and the culture has changed and there's
a brotherhood there and they really especially when they rallied
Sam Donald's defense in Englewood, you could see that. But
the bottom line is they're third right now in a
division they're trying to win. That's the goal. That's the
number one goal before they do anything else, that to
win a division. And the Rams game, to me, was
(32:05):
a very alarming litmus test to where they are. And
now that's not to say they get the Rams here
next month. They get the forty nine ers again in
the season eight. They should be eight and three after
Nashville on Sunday. They're not in an awful place, but
the bigger picture is a concern.
Speaker 6 (32:24):
Yeah, Seahawks.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Inside of Greg Bell with us from Thenewstribune dot com.
Also you can follow him at gee Bell Seattle. As
we talked from Seahawks Football here thanks to Fancy Spark
Lee Wine, and let's talk about the running back situation.
Another big topic on yesterday's program was maybe questioning that
you didn't commit to Ken Walker soon enough in that game,
(32:47):
and both coach and Hugh concluded that he needs more carries,
he needs to go back to being the number one.
Speaker 6 (32:54):
Do you think that will happen?
Speaker 2 (32:56):
I do?
Speaker 11 (32:57):
I asked McDonald that yesterday because I had the same
feeling coming out of LA when I saw him get
to the red zone. I saw him bring George Hallani
in on first down twice for two red zone runs
for six yards.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
When I saw.
Speaker 11 (33:09):
Charbon A in on the goal line running straight into
Rams who were in the backfield for no gain, I said,
why isn't Walker in there? And then on third and
one in the third quarter, ninety one had just beaten
on a swim move Anthony Bradford, and he was standing
in the backfield. I'm third and one, two yards behind
the line of screamings, right in front of Kenneth Walker.
(33:30):
Zack Sharbney would have run right into him for a
loss of two. Kenneth Walker joked him.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
He faked the.
Speaker 11 (33:37):
Head fake to the left, cut hard to the right,
went right by ninety one, who swung an air and
a five yard game That would have been a touchdown
if the safety didn't come down and trip him with
a shoestring tackle. That's the difference between Kenneth Walker and
Jack Sharbney. When I saw that, I felt to himself,
that's why you put him in in short yardage and
goal line in red zone. So I asked. I specifically
(33:58):
said to McDonald, is is Walker's elusiveness giving you second
thought on this job share and maybe short yardis go on?
Going more to Walker? And his answer was, I think
Ken's showing that, you know, he's earning more opportunities to
get the ball. So then I asked him, what about
this foot thing that you've been managing since August. We've
(34:18):
talked about this and it hasn't been well publicized, but
part of the reason they're pacing him is they try
to get through all seventeen games of getting hurt again.
And he said, as far as I know, he said, well,
first of all, nobody's one hundred percent at this point,
and we are never going to go one hundred percent
with one running back. He said, that would be fool
hardy because you're going to get him hurt. But yeah,
as far as he knows, he's through all of that.
(34:40):
So those two comments tell me it's going to be
Kenneth Walker more than it's been forty five percent of
the time. So far, the snapcounts have been forty nine
percent for sharbon a forty five for Walker. Now Walker
has more total snaps because he's played one more game
Sharbon I missed the game, but Sharbone is still playing more.
That's scene like it's about to change, and it should.
(35:02):
So it seems like now at this point the season
was seven games less, that they're going to not pace
Marker as much and perhaps give him more of the
short yard he's red zone and even two minute drills.
I mean, he had a catch for twenty three yards
down the sidelines where he just outran the middle linebacker
in the fourth quarter after a two yard checkdown pass,
it turned into a twenty three yard game. That's what
Walker gives you. Well, McDonald's make it sound like he
(35:24):
hears you and that he's going to play more.
Speaker 6 (35:26):
Gee, I'm on the same page with the You know,
it's not a feel good lead or whatever. It comes
down to wins, and yet there is times where you
can feel worse after a loss or better. You can
take some positives from a bad situation. I think one
positive is Jackson Smith and jig But even though they lost,
still was somewhat unstoppable. I mean when they threw him
the ball, it usually turned into a catch and a
first down. I'm wondering, is aj Barner is he starting
(35:50):
to turn into something that you could just add to
the rest of those complimentary pieces that a Cooper Cup
and possibly a Rashid Shaheed are trying to be, Which
is something else other than Jackson Smith and Jigba if
somebody does try to take him away, Yeah, he's.
Speaker 11 (36:05):
Gaining trust for sure with Donald and a lot of
those catches against the Rams, the Barner end up going
with eight catches for about one hundred yards. It wasn't
he wasn't the primary target Smith and Jigba often was,
and the Rams often bracketed and shadowed and voted extra
attention to Smith and Jigba. One time he cut that
one handed catch and still putting his toes down the
(36:25):
left side on an amazing catch, the Rams has rolled
rotated to safety over to his side with the corner
on that play too. Barner was getting catches as the
second and third read and that shows that Donald is
trusting him more as well. On the trust meter, it
looks to me like number one is one, two and
three Smith and Jigba, but then right below him is
(36:46):
Barner to get those secondary looks and targets. So he
has gone up in the trust stature of for sure Donald,
and the results are showing it the good. The best
thing for the Seahawks about Barner is they don't have
to take him off the field because it's a great
balker too, excuse me, And that is as important as anything.
(37:07):
They can go multiple tight ends and throw it as
much as they do into tight end offense because of
how Barner is so good at balking and at receiving.
Speaker 1 (37:16):
Another thing I think got under reported just quickly is
how good the secondary was I thought in the game
on Sunday for the Seahawks.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
Now Kobe Bryant at Stellar, I mean that was just Reek.
Woolan was really good.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
In my estimation, it's the nice job by the secondary
on Sunday.
Speaker 9 (37:32):
Well, he did.
Speaker 11 (37:33):
It was different. They rotated Job and Witherspoon and Woolan.
Wolan started as the extra nickel defensive back on the
first drive, and by the second drive, Woolan was the
starter with Witherspoon and then at times it was Job
and Woolan. And I asked after the game McDonald, what
about this rotation. He goes, Yeah, it's kind of a
good bad problem to have because there's a starting corner
(37:55):
that's not going.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
To play every down.
Speaker 11 (37:57):
Because I'm going to keep doing this, he said, I
can't give you a definite, but it looks like we're
going to continue this rotation. To him, Wolan has played
really well since coming back from the concussion, and he
doesn't want to bench him either, and so Job was
sort of the odd man out for a large part
of that game. You're right, Wolan had another standout game
with the ball in the air, a couple pass breaks,
(38:18):
breakups in the end zone, the things that he was
not doing earlier in the season with teams targeting him
for touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
He's now doing.
Speaker 11 (38:25):
He's had a resurgence in the middle of this season,
right in time too, because his contract's up. But now
Josh Job is perhaps the odd man out right now.
The two best corners playing it for them is Witherspoon
are Witherspoon and Wolan. But he loved Job and we've
talked about that, and Job had a couple of the
standout plays and special tackling in the open field immediately
(38:46):
after catches and pass breakup. McDonald says, we're going to
see the same thing in Tennessee. We're going to see
three guys playing two positions, so the reps are going
to get split accordingly.
Speaker 6 (38:57):
All right, Greg, thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
We appreciate often have a fancy brunch or something and
you know, we'll.
Speaker 6 (39:04):
Wash it down with some prosecco and we'll talk to
you tomorrow. How's that sound?
Speaker 11 (39:08):
And then prosecco in the morning. I'm gonna have oatmeal.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
And go to the dentist.
Speaker 1 (39:12):
I'm not very glamorous fancy at all.
Speaker 11 (39:16):
No, that's that's my day. I just I'll let you
know not exactly on Tuesdays, all right, Well, hope.
Speaker 6 (39:24):
You get good results.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
All right, Thank you, Greg, Greg Bell, our Seahawks insider,
and yes, his his fancy segment is brought to you
by our brand new sponsor, the MVP of the party.
Every game needs an MVP in this one, well it sparkles.
Coppola Diamond Collection Prosecco is light, crisp and always a win.
Grab your bubbles and toast to every touchdown like the
(39:47):
Bells do Game Day bubbles only with Coppola Diamond Prosecco.
Coming up next on our radio program, we are going
to play some fact or fiction.
Speaker 6 (39:56):
It is my pick today.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
And I know we touched upon this a little bit
earlier with Michael Pennix Junior suffering the injury, but maybe
it's time to evaluate the entire situation Pennix has been
thrust it into because I'm not sure he ever stood
a chance there with Raheem Morris and the Atlanta Falcons.
We'll get into that. On the other side, it's Chuck Buck.
(40:19):
It is Ashley right here on Sports Radio.
Speaker 6 (40:22):
Ninety three point three kJ RFM, Main Jean's territor.
Speaker 1 (40:37):
It's gonna join us at eight o'clock today. He probably
got called that a lot, and he's like the nicest.
Speaker 6 (40:42):
Person there is. I bet there's a mean spot in there.
Speaker 1 (40:45):
I think you probably remember it's mean Jene the dancing machine.
You remember mean Jane the Dancing Machine.
Speaker 6 (40:51):
No, I do remember mean Gene Okerland from wrestling.
Speaker 1 (40:54):
Oh well, yeah, a lot of mean Gene. I guess
if your name's Gene, you just get mean put next
to it.
Speaker 6 (41:00):
That's unfair. Maybe he maybe got like Keen Hey, keen,
Jean clean.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
Jean Hey clean, Jean Clean, Jean the King of hygiene.
Speaker 4 (41:08):
Right after he showered, that's what everyone called him.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
Great, we'll find out. We'll ask Jean stair door today
if he had any nicknames as a kid, and if
any of them stuck, and if.
Speaker 8 (41:19):
He is if he does have a mean streak. I
bet if you mess with his family, he's real mean.
Oh yeah, is that Italian in him?
Speaker 4 (41:26):
He comes from my family.
Speaker 6 (41:27):
He's always threatening me with stuff like oh yeah, I know,
it's fun. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (41:31):
So we'll also talk to him about officiating and stuff
at eight o'clock here today. Josh Naylor later today is
going to be talking to the media. He has officially
signed his deal, so it's done. Five years, ninety two
point five million dollars. The first baseman that stole our
hearts in no time flat has been retained by the
(41:53):
Mariners and he's going to be playing over their first
base for the better part of the next five years.
And it seems like everybody is on board with this
in town.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (42:03):
I don't know how you couldn't be. I mean it's
not like he came over, and I mean the the
idea of Polonco coming back is quite the reversal considering
the year before, and then they brought him back and
he has a spectacular year last year for us. That
wasn't the case with Josh Nato. He basically hit the
ground and ran literally stole basis right off the bat.
(42:24):
I mean it was I wanted this dude a couple
of years ago. I just like the way that he
plays the game. And then they got him, and there
was part of me not wanting that to go away,
and so I'm glad that they they doubled down on it.
Speaker 1 (42:37):
I think he wanted to sign sign him the day
after he debuted.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
I did.
Speaker 6 (42:41):
Yeah, yeah, just get it done.
Speaker 8 (42:44):
Yeah, there was a lot of conversations about that over
the last few months and season, like oh, we could
just do it now, get it over with.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (42:51):
We saw that picture of him and Stanton. I think
it was after they had clinched one of those things
they clinched and back to back to back days and
they were smiling and talking to each other, and I
guarantee they're like, hey, man, you like it here right?
It's really nice, isn't it. And he must have said, yes,
I do, I really do like it.
Speaker 1 (43:10):
I think it took Softy eight days. I think it
took Ashley three and a half. I think it took
you won it back.
Speaker 4 (43:15):
I was gonna say, yeah, not even a day.
Speaker 6 (43:16):
I don't even think it was bad. I think it
was just like, yeah, what trade it for him? Sign
him up long term.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
Probably liked him some Josh Naylor for quite some time,
and that's before he became Vicky Henderson. But now I
got a new nickname for him, the round mound of
Puget sound.
Speaker 4 (43:33):
I love it. Charles Barkley not quite the.
Speaker 6 (43:39):
Same everybody, I don't know. I can't wait to meet him.
Not everybody is okay with the self deprecating, you know,
like the you know, like, I bet Spoge wasn't a
big fan of Spudge. You know, the nicknames, the greatest
name ever for a fat guy. It's it's funny, it's funny.
(43:59):
I bet he did like it. The round mound of
Puget Sound. I like Thicky Henderson, and well, I like
that one. I don't think he'll like that one as
much as Dicky.
Speaker 4 (44:09):
Hendersonicky Henderson is number one.
Speaker 8 (44:11):
But the reason I like the roundmount of Puget Sound
is because of his defensive skills.
Speaker 4 (44:15):
So then he really is channeling some Charles Barkley.
Speaker 1 (44:18):
Maybe it's like we could play off nine inch nails,
but because he's a little thicker ten inch nails. Uh yeah,
you know that, the wouldn't make him thicker, just taller, taller.
Speaker 6 (44:35):
Yeah, you get what I'm saying. Just stick your hands out.
You're figuring the ten.
Speaker 1 (44:40):
Screws nine inch screws. No, they're not changing.
Speaker 6 (44:44):
His name is not Josh Screwler screw Goodness, did you
notice that the team was all Jimmy like his One
of his middle names is James, so apparently he must
go by Jimmy.
Speaker 1 (44:56):
Oh okay, tod by it.
Speaker 6 (44:59):
But I think that's the nick me that he's gotten
in the clubhouse. Huh weird. Jimmy Nayles, Jimmy Nailes, Jimmy
jam Nails. So you just let your brain stew on that.
I'm sure you're coming up with something. I think that's fun.
Speaker 1 (45:09):
Yeah, I like Vicky Anderson, and I probably will throw
the round mount of Puget sound out occasionally.
Speaker 4 (45:14):
Yeah, as you should, but it is a little long.
You can't say it all the time.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
I'm not expecting him to go buy it or have
posters made or have it put on the back of
one of his jerseys, but I'm going to I'm gonna
mention it every once in a while.
Speaker 6 (45:26):
Yeah, but yes, Josh Naylor will be announced a little
bit later on the day.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
And he's one of the most thoughtful professional athletes you'll
ever hear interviewed, and so always time to stop and
hear what Josh Naylor has to say. And so far
he's only given us a quote, and that quote has
been how excited he is, how he felt just immediately
embraced when he came to Seattle.
Speaker 6 (45:49):
And he does not want to leave here.
Speaker 1 (45:50):
So Josh Naylor's going to remain a Mariner of course,
what's next for the ems. My crystal Ball forecast is
officially out this morning. Andrews Hurst and I we record
Stove today, our second episode of our Mariners offseason podcast,
so we will dive completely into this topic. Anders and I,
(46:11):
Bucky Ashley and I will talk a little bit more
about it tomorrow. But if you want to read it,
a couple of little upsets in there that I think
you'll be interested in. I'm not sure you'll really even
like it, But the idea behind the crystal Ball is
to stay within the parameters of the finances that the
organization operates under and try to come up with a
realistic game plan that marries both what I think I'd
(46:33):
like for them to do and what I think they
actually will do, and ultimately they won't do anything that
I say. All right, Coming down next, gene Sterotor is
with a sports radio ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 3 (46:46):
It's time for Checking Buck's weekly visit with former NFL
official Gene Sterotor, brought to you but BMWCL. Looking for
a new or used bmw or something else even, come
check us out at bmwcl's conveniently located between I five
and I ninety near the stadiums now with Jeane Sterotor.
Speaker 6 (47:05):
Here's Chucking buck Ah.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
Yes, time to chat with Clean Jean Sterotur right here
on Chuck and Buck in the Morning. Sports Radio ninety
three point three KJRFM. Ashley Ryan is here, Bucky Jacobson,
Chuck Powell, and we now welcome one of our favorite guests,
Jean Sterotur, CBS rules analysts and the greatest NFL official
you've ever known, is with us right here on the program.
Speaker 7 (47:31):
Good morning, sir, Good morning Chuck, Clean Gene, I think
maybe I did a little extra behind the ears today.
Speaker 1 (47:37):
I appreciate that we were wondering in our last segment,
did you have any childhood nicknames? Because people named Gene
when I grew up just immediately got called mean Gene.
And I can't imagine that anyone, even a six year
old would have thought six year old Gen Sterotor was mean. Well,
I don't know that.
Speaker 2 (47:55):
I can't say.
Speaker 7 (47:56):
Probably there's a couple out there in grade school that
might want to say that. Unfortunately, we can't go back.
And you know, if you've seen my profile, there were
definitely a few nicknames.
Speaker 9 (48:06):
It probably had to do with that.
Speaker 7 (48:08):
Uh, that Italian nose, the Roman one that's Roman all
over my face, you know.
Speaker 9 (48:13):
So, uh you know that was that was a hook
nose for a while.
Speaker 7 (48:17):
It's okay, you know. I mean the things as children
that we thought were hurtful and demeaning sometimes end up
in our badge of honor, as we did older.
Speaker 2 (48:28):
So you know that.
Speaker 7 (48:29):
Ye, we'll go with that one. Fellas read the clean
jing thing that makes me good? But yeah, were you
freckle face?
Speaker 6 (48:38):
But oh well you can just imagine I mean, redheaded,
freckle faced guy with a name Bucky. That rhyme Bucky
rhymes with a lot of bad words, sucking, chucky.
Speaker 4 (48:50):
Yes, there's talking about Ducky. That is a bad.
Speaker 6 (48:53):
Ducky was not the one I didn't get called that.
Uh yeah it was. It was a tree great school was.
But you're right, it's a badge of honor. Now exactly,
look at the two of you. Now you've made it,
you two. We couldn't be more proud of it. One
of us has.
Speaker 7 (49:14):
I have to live through the Gong Show though, when
it was yeah, you know, Jean Jean, the dancing machine.
Speaker 2 (49:19):
So you know I did.
Speaker 7 (49:21):
I lived through that when I was kind of a
middle school we thing. I think when that show went out.
Speaker 1 (49:25):
Yeah, Bucky doesn't remember me Jane Dance. Yeah, Buggy doesn't
remember mean Jeane the dancing Machine.
Speaker 6 (49:31):
I remember mean gene Oakerland from the WWF back.
Speaker 2 (49:34):
In the day.
Speaker 1 (49:34):
Yes, all right, well, let us dance our way through
a few of these plays that we saw over the weekend,
and I want to start with a hometown play because
they were about fifty plays that if they went the
other way, maybe we win that game against the Los
Angeles Rams. But one certainly comes to mind. We had
a touchdown taking off the board, ken Walker ran in
(49:57):
for the score. Remember we lost by two points in
that contest. And so we had our analyst Hugh Millan
on yesterday. He said that that hole that was called
on the edge by collar up could be called on
every single play. What did you think of that play?
Should that touchdown have been overturned?
Speaker 2 (50:21):
That's a tough play. I thought.
Speaker 7 (50:22):
Greg Olsen did a really great job on the broadcast
breaking it down as quickly as he could. And some
aspects from a players standpoint in him being a tight end.
You know what, I think the plays designed. He stock
blocks right in the beginning right, and the opening or
the hole that I think based on the way the
blocking started was for that was for Walker to kind
(50:42):
of cut off his right shoulder on the inside of
him and it was more of a seal block on
that in that regard right to try to just sort
of kick out to open up that area, and then
naturally Walker bounces it out. And now he bounces it
out to the perimeter, and the defensive player, naturally seeing him,
you know, through the through the block, starts then to
try to shed the block and get to.
Speaker 2 (51:03):
The outside perimeter.
Speaker 7 (51:05):
So now you have a blocker who is in a
position where maybe leverage changes.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
Rather quickly because of where the.
Speaker 7 (51:11):
Back balances, and now you see restriction and that falls
in that delicate place right at the point of attack,
right one Walker gets to that element or that block,
and now the restrictions outside of the frame. So listen
to defense of someone saying, yeah, are they grabbing like
that on every play?
Speaker 9 (51:29):
Yeah, they do.
Speaker 7 (51:30):
Grab like that within their frame as it relates to
the point of attack all those elements. But now when
the defensive player is trying to shed you, he gets
outside of your frame, he beats your feet if he's
rushing through you. That's when these elements of yeah, they're
grabbing every play, they are, but they're not holding. And
now when I'm restricting, you're outside of your frame and
it's a point of attack restriction there, then that does
(51:52):
tighten things a little, and then there is that advantage
and disadvantage that rises to a level where it has
a direct effect on the play. Those are the breakdowns
that really should take place.
Speaker 9 (52:04):
You hope they take place.
Speaker 7 (52:05):
I think in some of our past interference calls over
the week, those elements didn't take place really to the
negative side of the officiating portion of it, or to
be critical a little on that end, But those are
the things you need to process, right, and I think
when you learn that craft and can process in those
moments for those reasons, the.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
Game gets better.
Speaker 9 (52:25):
And quite frankly to.
Speaker 7 (52:27):
Me, that's a hold, right, that's because of the things
that I lined up.
Speaker 2 (52:31):
But that's the art of officiating. Yeah, we got.
Speaker 6 (52:35):
Keen Gene sterotor with us here of dropping his knowledge.
I am I am interested, Gene. You know, I'm one
that's about sportsmanship and I'll stand on that one. I'll
die on that hill. I like it. And yet there's times, right,
we talked about how many pumps is legal and whatnot,
and then you know there was no last week, no pumps,
(52:57):
no pumps. But I think there were so many pumped
on the ground or something this week. I don't know
about that. I'm just going to say, yeah, right, you
can't do that. Horizontal pumps are definitely, but yeah, Trey
McBride in the Arizona Cardinals Niners game, he ends up
doing something I think. You know, typically every single catch
for a first down, the receiver or tight end has
(53:20):
to now point in the direction that they're going for
a first down. And yet he did it kind of
while wiping his nose, and they threw a flag. Is
it illegal to get a cold in the NFL now
or is there something to that that I'm missing?
Speaker 9 (53:35):
Yeah, Bucky.
Speaker 2 (53:36):
The swipe.
Speaker 7 (53:38):
The nose swipe, which I have learned over the course
of these last two years as it became a little
more predominant, and didn't really understand it from a generational
or whatever reason. The nose swipe itself is an act
kind of like when we started seeing the lifting of
the jersey, right, it wasn't really showing a weapon, but
it was a brandishing the nose swipe from what I've
(54:00):
been told, and it's really just from seeking you know,
information is something that has done to check to see
if you're still breathing.
Speaker 9 (54:08):
Basically right, So now I put.
Speaker 2 (54:10):
My finger under the nose.
Speaker 9 (54:12):
There's no I don't feel any breathing.
Speaker 7 (54:14):
You're you know, so within that realm, right, officials get
put into these.
Speaker 9 (54:23):
I don't like to say that there are difficult.
Speaker 7 (54:25):
Positions from officials because this information is disseminated throughout the league.
We have major tape film discussion on these for the
right reasons. I know the public thinks, you know, why
are we wasting our time with all of this. Look,
we all know the millions and millions of people at
all age levels watching these games, and little subtle messages
(54:48):
that some of us, because of our age or where
we are, doesn't mean anything, but they're profound. That's information
where the coaches, the players, the officials, all the stakeholders,
they're serious conversation. It's because of this messaging, because of
our platform. So we do stress that, Look, we understand
this might be subtle, but this is a message that's
(55:09):
more profound than just this reaction and a game to
amongst competitors.
Speaker 2 (55:14):
It's not permitted.
Speaker 7 (55:15):
And that was disseminated, right, I mean, that was all done, shared,
agreed upon, and then you're in the heat of the
moment the reaction takes place and you saw how he
did it. It was very subtle. This was not like
that was the definitive part of his celebration. It was
a quick note swipe that turned into a first out right,
But okay, get more creative. The first down looks really great.
(55:38):
I love seeing you do first down with emphasis like that.
Don't point at your opponent, but let's go. Man, that's
a big play. It pumps the place up. It's great
for the game. Get the other piece out of.
Speaker 9 (55:48):
It, though.
Speaker 7 (55:48):
Found something else more creative to do it, and if
you can't, then it's a foul.
Speaker 9 (55:52):
I'm sorry. That's just the way you have to work
things sometimes.
Speaker 1 (55:55):
Yeah, I just I like the process. I like that
you have to make those decisions. It feels like I've
seen that so many times and it's not being called.
But maybe it's college that I've seen it where it's
not called. But but you're telling me that consistently. That's
a you can't do that gesture. Call in the NFL, yes, okay.
Speaker 7 (56:15):
And message and really honestly in defensive college too, it's
there as well. Okay, that's the other dynamics that we all,
I think, have to embrace. Right when you're down on
that field, then there's a lot of bodies moving in
and out of you. In a camera from halfway up
the stadium with an amazing zoom lens in four k
it catches two seconds of something that quite frankly, you
just might you know, it's a human condition.
Speaker 9 (56:36):
I didn't see it amongst the trees or something to
that effect, but if you see it.
Speaker 2 (56:41):
We need those.
Speaker 7 (56:42):
Called and we need them taught, and we need that
culture to.
Speaker 2 (56:46):
Continue to embrace creativity.
Speaker 7 (56:48):
But understand this beautiful platform they're on college athletes you
know as well.
Speaker 9 (56:53):
And I think that's just the gist of it.
Speaker 6 (56:55):
Lean Jean Sterotur is our yeah.
Speaker 1 (57:00):
On Chuck It Back in the Morning, a segment every
week brought to you by BMW Seattle. All right, let's
get to the most controversial play maybe of the weekend,
and that was the Sunday night Eagles versus Lions PI
call at the end of the game where Chris collins
Worth just natural reaction, because I do think he takes
care of the officials a little better than Akman and
(57:21):
some others.
Speaker 6 (57:22):
Just natural reaction. That is a terrible call. I felt.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
It feels like most people felt. Man, those two have
been hand fighting the entire game, and you're gonna choose now,
with the game on the line, to call that TICKI
tac fowl, which I don't even think is PI at
any time during the game. What did you make of
that call on Rocky a scene versus AJ Brown at
the end of Sunday Night's Contest.
Speaker 9 (57:45):
Me, you're right, You're just right right.
Speaker 7 (57:47):
It's not enough for a foul.
Speaker 9 (57:49):
It's not consistent with the.
Speaker 7 (57:51):
Way that the game was efficient and ought to say
that I want, I think that's a fall at any time,
as you just said. And then therein lies kind of
what I prefaced a little earlier. Right, there's a teaching
level of all of this. When a defensive back is
engaging with the receiver and we have two great athletes
that are basically hand fighting, we call it a snuggle
into a hand fight, into a back and forth. I
(58:14):
think at times some officials are thinking subconsciously, if he
does this next thing, it's going to be a foul, right,
and your brain is prepping you in some ways that way,
And I think there's value to prep your brain in
a different way by saying when two players like that
are engaged in hand fighting, that is not creating an
advantage of disadvantage. Rather than thinking, well, if he does this,
(58:35):
now I'm going to get him, you should think now
that they decided to both do that, and we used
to call that both players happy to be there, okay,
and they're not really taking a major advantage out of
each other. What it really has allowed, as opposed to
not what they can do, is it's allowed either player,
especially the offensive player, in that situation where the defense
(58:56):
decided to engage in hand fighting. It's allowed me this
five to ten percent of action to get you off
of me. So a subtle push out of a hand
fighting situation is okay, that's football. Those are athletes. That's
in space. If I'm not touching you at all, that
(59:16):
same subtle separation as you're closing in on me legally
without engaging with me should become a more profound separation then,
so now it should be worked a little more technical.
At that point, these layers that happen that we get
to dissect frame by frame and say how terrible they
are are the things that training and repetition and seeing
(59:38):
these plays in real time and understanding how to break
them down, I think allows for what is what the
rules are intended for, right, I mean that's the goal.
But you must engage players and allow them to do
things when they are happy to be there, when they're
making athletic plays. It's to hook around the waiste on
(59:58):
a player coming from behind a receiver that then puts
his arm around the receiver's waist, doesn't hold him back,
doesn't take a step away, doesn't keep his hands down,
and that defensive player gets that other hand around in
front of him and knocks the football down. That's a
great football play that's not automatically past interference. If he
turns him, if he restricts him in a different level
(01:00:19):
after that, Now it's risen to that elevation. These are
easy things to talk to you like this and break
down on a film and show them frame by frame.
It's once another element when you're out there. You've got
to process these things kind of in your brain like
I'm kind of doing now, and do it at a
high level. That's what puts you in that space, right,
I mean, these are the best of the best, So
(01:00:41):
figure that out or move back down to a different
level where we don't need to figure that out. Because
little Billy who's fifteen can't put his arm around the
receiver without turning him. So it's a flag in high
school almost every time because they're dis quite frankly, might
not be good enough to do it, right. I mean,
that's the growth one that happened on this stage.
Speaker 9 (01:01:01):
Uh and uh, And that's really the gist of it.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
But you're right, it's I don't think it's the.
Speaker 6 (01:01:06):
Top Jeane, the gene he's so good at it. I mean, Jane,
there was the Broncos Chiefs game. You were working that game,
and there was a couple of plays and neither one
of them got called. And yet I'm kind of curious
from the standpoint of can you recognize when it's there's
a flop going on, because that's got to be I mean,
(01:01:28):
to me, there was there was two plays, very similar,
one for each team. I think it was Thornton or
Throckmann or a receiver for Kansas City had caught one
kind of a contested ball, he had done a little
bit of the offensive push off created some separation. The
dB for Denver kind of flopped and fell like it.
It did push him off balance, but he completes the pass,
(01:01:50):
gets up, runs for a little bit, then the almost
a game ceiling one with with Troy Franklin. He does
a little push off as well, and the defender doesn't
fall down out of it. I'm wondering if there's somewhere
where you recognize that, Okay, there might have been a
little bit of a push off, but you're trying to
embellish it, and does that make it less likely or
(01:02:12):
more likely that you're going to throw the flag?
Speaker 7 (01:02:15):
I think my basketball officiating, quite humbly and honestly.
Speaker 9 (01:02:18):
Bucky, I thought, helped me be able to dissect.
Speaker 7 (01:02:20):
That a lot because I was working for major college
basketball games throughout the week before my NFL weekend. So
again back to seeing plays getting constant repetition on was
that an offensive file that he really separated as he
flopped right that little piece in there where you try
to apply that, those are feels, and I think when
(01:02:41):
you're really seeing it from beginning to end.
Speaker 2 (01:02:45):
One other little.
Speaker 9 (01:02:46):
Tidbit kind of in that regard.
Speaker 7 (01:02:48):
Right, when you see a receiver get to the top
of his route and that dB is close to him,
and now he pushes off at the top of that
route just as he starts to break out. When a
defensive bat goes back where it's two or three quick
steps after that separation, ninety nine percent of the time
that is not embellishing because he doesn't want to try
(01:03:10):
to just trick the rest right there, right, He doesn't.
He still wants to win on this play. So when
you see a DD go back like you can tell
that momentum put him back one two steps and then
he plants and tries to get back and close on
the play, your spider senses will tell you there was
a lot there because he's not just going to bail here.
(01:03:30):
He was too close to being in making a play.
Then we get to the pieces I think that maybe
you're describing and I saw those, and that is is
this athlete that good?
Speaker 9 (01:03:40):
And yes they are.
Speaker 7 (01:03:41):
To realize at this moment, I can't make a play,
I can't get back. My only alternative now is potentially
to do what you said, buck right, embellies this and
see my last hope is this because I couldn't get
back as an athlete to get into the play.
Speaker 2 (01:03:58):
So let's try this.
Speaker 7 (01:04:00):
Used to hate when they would run sweeps to my
side as a referee, and I saw that edge Russia
get beat and he's getting a little restriction and I
don't think it's enough. And as soon as the back
goes around me, throws both of his hands up in
the air, and you would think, oh gosh, this is
going to be one where the grater is going to
tell me that that's enough for a hole right at
the edge, and the hands up in the air is
(01:04:21):
going to draw the attention to the evaluator. So you
write that play up and you let them know, Look,
I watched this in real time. This is what I felt.
Now you continue to do what you want to do.
It the great, But yeah, I think there's pieces of that.
And then to be critical of myself, I think because
of the flopping and my basketball years, I was the
worst running into the kicker referee maybe in the history
(01:04:43):
of football, because every time that bunter got touched, you know,
he was doing the pirouette and the fall and I
wanted to give him a yellow card. And I was
reminded many times coach arians a few and the heated
discussions letting me know that running into the kicker is
also a FI your penalty. And I said, I know, coach,
but he flopped and he goes, I understand that, but
(01:05:05):
he still did run into him. And and I would
kind of look after being you know, disrobed for thirty
seconds and agree with him and say, you know, you're
probably right it was running under the kicker.
Speaker 2 (01:05:14):
But we're going to go after TV right now.
Speaker 7 (01:05:17):
And well you can yell it be about something else
in about another twenty minutes.
Speaker 11 (01:05:21):
But no, I agree.
Speaker 9 (01:05:23):
See, I think that's what I think.
Speaker 7 (01:05:24):
That's again, these are these nuances that we want officials
as they climb the ladders to be able to put
into their craft. And and it's not an easy thing.
It's hard as hell to do this. But you've got
to be able to process those elements, I think, but
to live in that space and be really good at it.
Speaker 1 (01:05:47):
Espresso Bean, Jean Stereotor right here on the radio programs. Yeah,
just a little bit of the Italian heritage right there.
Speaker 9 (01:06:00):
Just a good idea.
Speaker 11 (01:06:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:06:01):
Yeah, well we'll say, I mean, the tush push isn't
going to go anywhere. We'll have to for time reasons
save that for next week. But it is getting very
interesting that tush push. I mean, everybody's angry every single
time that a play is called for a tush push
on both sides of the ball. It's getting rather fascinating
and I can't wait to get your thoughts on it.
But we'll have to save that for next week.
Speaker 2 (01:06:22):
Sir.
Speaker 1 (01:06:22):
Thank you very much for joining us. We appreciate it.
And I won't see you. I won't be on the
show next week. I'll be taking some time off. So
happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Speaker 7 (01:06:33):
Happy Thanksgiving, and I'm sure we'll have a little tush
and a little push to talk about even after seven days.
So that's the best teas of the week. What he
is waiting for a little toush push. Thanks fellas, Thank you, Jean,
thank you have a great Thanksgiving man than you.
Speaker 1 (01:06:48):
Thanks Jeane Sterator, CBS rules analysts, former NFL official joining
us every Tuesday at this time thanks to Bmwcattle. Looking
for a new or used BMW or something else, even,
go check out BMW Seattle, conveniently located between I five
and I ninety near the stadiums I dress for that
(01:07:09):
guy nearly every Halloween.
Speaker 6 (01:07:10):
I'm Halloween, Jean stare at here. We come all right,
coming up next like a proud mom.
Speaker 1 (01:07:16):
There you good job, buddy, Everett FITZI will be with
us next. Speaking of proud moms, I think he's spending
the night in his old bedroom tonight as he calls
the Red Wings cracking game on kJ R. You know,
Big made a make success out of himself going back
home to call a Red Wings game. Probably slept in
(01:07:37):
his old sheets Miguel Cabrera bed sheets last night at
mom's house. She probably made him his favorite breakfast. And
now eleven thirty Detroit time, probably just walking the streets
of Detroit right now, saying hello to the nicest people
in America.
Speaker 13 (01:07:56):
Ain't you proud?
Speaker 9 (01:07:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:07:58):
You know these don't leave me.
Speaker 13 (01:08:03):
Good mornings, proof that mood, you know, like my my,
my steps a little peppy or whatever. You know, you
come back to the city that made you. At dinner
with my mom last night, Big Al and Mama fits
and at dinner last night, so it was fun. It's
(01:08:24):
been a good couple of days.
Speaker 6 (01:08:25):
Did you take him to Tommy's Bar? Yeah, that wasn't ask.
Speaker 2 (01:08:31):
No, no, not the sun.
Speaker 6 (01:08:33):
Well, if you do tell Tommy, we said, Hi, yeah, exactly,
I'm picturing use this guy with cecil fielder bed sheets.
By the way, Oh, I.
Speaker 13 (01:08:44):
Was so growing up. I was a really big Tigers
and Pistons fan. So I had like the Grant Hill
poster and like the old Bobby Higginson poster in my room.
Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
Wow, Damien Easley.
Speaker 13 (01:09:00):
Tony Clark, some of those old nineties Tigers who could
barely win sixty five games like those those were the
teams that I had still in love with. They had
a big Ernie Harwell a little sign in my room
as well.
Speaker 1 (01:09:14):
So yeah, I actually have a Bobby Higginson story. I
had an ex girlfriend who I lived with, who had
apparently dated him, and she had a Toledo mud Hens
jersey from him. Yeah uh, and I ended up taking it. Like,
not only was I not threatened, I'm like, I want
a mud Hens jersey. I'll wear this, you know what.
Speaker 13 (01:09:36):
I appreciate that because I've had a few of my
favorite t shirts and sweatshirts taken from me in previous relationships,
so it feels good to see someone took one back
for the team. I appreciate that and.
Speaker 1 (01:09:48):
You don't love him, right right, You're you're moved on
from him, and then just let me have his jersey.
Yeah uh, all.
Speaker 6 (01:09:53):
Right, Well let's talk some cracking hockey.
Speaker 1 (01:09:56):
I mean, it has been a couple of minutes since
we last chatted with you, and they've had a couple
nice wins over the Jets, the Sharks, who they struck
a little revenge with nine goals over two games. I
gotta believe that even without Joey Decord, they've built about
as much offensive momentum as they have all season long
(01:10:16):
heading into this game tonight.
Speaker 13 (01:10:19):
Yeah, who said this team couldn't score?
Speaker 6 (01:10:21):
Right now?
Speaker 13 (01:10:22):
You get one goal in three of your previous four
games and then you explode for five and four and again.
I think we've been taking this all year long. Laine
Lambert has been saying, you stick with the program, you
stick with that discipline, and the offense will come. And
I think every game he's laid down a challenge to
this team, whether that's shoot the puck more. He even
(01:10:44):
said it after the Columbus game. You know, I would
like this these guys to be a little bit more selfish, right,
I know it flies in the face of a lot
of what we hear in hockey, but be.
Speaker 6 (01:10:55):
More selfish take that shot.
Speaker 2 (01:10:56):
I still think.
Speaker 13 (01:10:57):
We're looking for that perfect seam pass. We're looking for
that perfect shot. Just put pucks on that. Well, they
listen in the Winnipeg game, you get five and then
they rinse and repeated against against San Jose for four.
So you know, we'll see if that continues on the road.
But I will say very encouraging positive signs in the
(01:11:18):
last two games. You pick up another statement win against Winnipeg,
you exact some revenge against San Jose. Ten players get
points in that Winnipeg game. I think eight players had
points in the San Jose game. So now you're seeing
the depth offense come. You're seeing the offense come, and
now we'll see if they can they can keep it
(01:11:38):
going here in Detroit.
Speaker 6 (01:11:39):
Well, Grooby filled in nice for the injured Matt Murray.
I mean, is Grooby back And are we feeling okay
about the whole Matt Murray decord situation?
Speaker 13 (01:11:52):
Well, I think Grubauer, I mean, he is playing some
of the best hockey that I think we've seen from
him since that playoff year. Right, everyone loves to talk
about playoff groovy and and what he did during that run,
and you're starting to see you know, quote unquote vintage
Grubauer again. Matt Murray did not make the trip for Seattle,
(01:12:14):
so it's Grubauer. Joey de Coord is on the ice
right now. He's getting those first reps. It looks like
he may be starting tonight. So yeah, that that, at
least from from what I'm reading in the tea, leaves
the morning skate here today and then that practice yesterday.
He took a lot of the first reps uh in
practice yesterday, So I it would it would appear to
(01:12:36):
me that Joey to Coord is going to be back tonight.
We'll see officially here after morning skate. But you know, Grubauer,
I think working with our new goaltending coach, Colin Zulianello,
you know, he's had to really Colin has has had
to really manage this three goalie system and and you
know there's all types of egos that go into it,
(01:12:59):
and that's not a negative thing. But what he's been
able to do keeping all those guys ready to go, fresh,
ready to play. Matt Burry's been playing very very well.
Philip Grubauer, we've seen now back to back games, including
one in relief, you now have three very viable options
in goal for Seattle, which is in a short and
(01:13:21):
you know tight season like we're going to have this
year in terms of back to backs and and you
know games every other day, you're going to need your
goalies going. And I think right now that three goalie
system is proving that it's working.
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
He's colonized him, is what he's done.
Speaker 6 (01:13:35):
See what colonizing? Yeah, it's colonized him. Tret Fitz.
Speaker 1 (01:13:38):
You is with us the voice of your Seattle Crack.
And they face the Detroit Red Wings tonight four pm.
They will drop the puck three thirty pre game right
here at Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ RFM.
Speaker 6 (01:13:49):
We did talk about the offense earlier.
Speaker 1 (01:13:51):
I mean it's a natural thing for fans to get
excited about the future players talk about Nieman and kat
and and right and even Veneer's still a young player.
But it's the veterans, it's Schwartz and Everly that have
really stepped up here recently for this team.
Speaker 11 (01:14:08):
Yeah, they have.
Speaker 13 (01:14:09):
And I think you know that that also comes with
the type of coach that Lane is. I think Jordan
having played four lane on Long Island with the Islanders
for all those years. He knows what to expect out
of him Jaden Schwartz. This type of system fits his game.
You know, he wants to be that power forward. He
(01:14:30):
wants to go to the net. He wants to get
his hands dirty and and get into the mix and
get into the fight. So this type of style, I think,
especially for those two fit well. And and you're almost
seeing you know how we recorded our latest episode of
Cracking Weekly, which is up on the Crack and Audio
Network podcast channel right now.
Speaker 11 (01:14:49):
But he he.
Speaker 13 (01:14:50):
Gave his his three stars of the week two quote
unquote the old guys, but in In Schwartz and Everly
because you know, even though they're they're among the elder
statesman of this team, you're seeing how valuable and how
important they are. You're they're leading by example, and then
you know, it doesn't take you long to look up
and down the lineup guys like Tyke Krzhieg and Ryan Winterton,
(01:15:12):
you know doing things that Everly and Schwartz are doing
because they're they're leading by example. So those are the
two guys that you need to get going, because when
they're going, everyone else sees that everyone else follows suits
and that's what's happening right now.
Speaker 1 (01:15:28):
All right, So, well, they're not the Stevie Eiserman Sergei
Federal fred Wings that little over It grew up with,
but they do seem to be improved. Give me, I
only got about thirty seconds. Give me a thirty second
scouting report on the Red Wings here tonight.
Speaker 13 (01:15:42):
I mean, the Red Wings are a team that they
need to take that next step. They've got a lot
of really young, talented players. They've got two players in
their lineup this season that have been contributing that are
in their NHL debut season. So this is a team
that they rely heavily on Dylan Markin along with Alex
to brink It. But they also have some good young pieces,
(01:16:02):
very much like a San Jose in that they're young
Anaheim as well.
Speaker 2 (01:16:07):
They're young, they're.
Speaker 13 (01:16:09):
Talented, they have a couple of vets you've been around
the block, but it's for the most part, it's the
young players that are leading this team. They've narrowly missed
the playoffs the last couple of seasons and they're trying
to get back to the playoffs for the first time.
And I think ten years, so that's unheard of around
these parts. So this is not going to be an
easy game by any means for Seattle.
Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
Have fun today, have fun tonight, have fun with mom
if you get to see her again before you have
to head out of town.
Speaker 6 (01:16:36):
And we will talk to you next week. All right, all.
Speaker 13 (01:16:39):
Right, fellas, Ashley, take care, we'll talk to you all right.
Speaker 1 (01:16:42):
Ever fits you the voice of your Seattle crack and

(01:17:02):

three KJRFM, each time.
Speaker 6 (01:17:11):
To talk all things college football.
Speaker 14 (01:17:13):
It's just like the menu at Taco Time. You just
can't get enough, You just can't get.
Speaker 3 (01:17:18):
This is our weekly visit with Rick new Heidel, brought
to you by Taco Time.
Speaker 2 (01:17:22):
Nachos.
Speaker 14 (01:17:23):
New Heidels used to be a moniker of mine. I mean,
just sell you out now.
Speaker 3 (01:17:27):
On your home for college football Saturdays. Here's Nacho's new
heidel on Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 14 (01:17:36):
This is college football and I want you to get
it all over yourself.
Speaker 1 (01:17:42):
Every Tuesday, Rick new Isle with us right here on
Chuck and Buck in the morning.
Speaker 14 (01:17:46):
Hello, sir, Hey, how are you guys doing today?
Speaker 6 (01:17:50):
We're doing great. How about yourself?
Speaker 14 (01:17:53):
I got no bad news. I woke up this morning
in Birmingham, Alabama, and flew back to New York and
I'm to get the last portion of my radio show done,
and now here I am with you.
Speaker 6 (01:18:04):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:18:05):
I'm curious, as it's a Husky UCLA week. How much
is your son bugging you for information about the Huskies?
And how much is Jedfish bugging you for information about UCLA?
Speaker 2 (01:18:20):
Interesting?
Speaker 14 (01:18:21):
I can tell you, but then I'd have to kill you, right.
You know what I find as I get older, no
one really wants my information. I've been relegated to that
role as a father and just stay.
Speaker 2 (01:18:40):
Out of the way.
Speaker 14 (01:18:40):
Dad, I got this, So I'm anxious for the game.
I think the quarterback is going to be healthy. He
was unavailable. Miko Iamaliavo was unavailable against Ohio State, and
we know what they do to opponent offenses, especially if
you're down.
Speaker 2 (01:18:57):
A couple of guys.
Speaker 14 (01:18:58):
So I'm anxious to the UCLA played better. But the
way Washington was clicking last week, it'll be uh, it'll
be a tough shore for their defense.
Speaker 6 (01:19:08):
Yeah, they were, they were clicking, and they have some injuries.
And yet I am curious just as far as U
c l A goes, what is it that the Huskies
need to worry about the most?
Speaker 14 (01:19:20):
I think, Uh, you know, the player is Miko i Amaliaba,
and when his legs get involved, then they become dangerous.
Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
Uh.
Speaker 14 (01:19:29):
But getting to that portion of their offenses, it's been difficult.
Early in the season. The defense was doing really really well.
The last couple of times out times out, they've they've struggled.
They couldn't stop Nebraska, who had kind of a fleet
of foot quarterback a freshman that was playing that particular day,
(01:19:53):
TJ latif Uh. And I don't know that they'll be
able to corral Demon Williams given what we've seen of
him and his ability to make plays with his legs.
Speaker 1 (01:20:05):
The Bruins saw the number one ranked team in the
country up close in personal last week. Are the defending
national champs even better this year than they were last season?
Speaker 14 (01:20:15):
You know, I don't know that. I see vulnerability. Okay, now,
no one's been able, no one's been able to exploit it.
But I don't know that they can just move you
off the ball as an offensive line. I think they're
you know what we saw with Texas A and M
coming from behind in that game against South Carolina this week,
(01:20:38):
what we saw Indiana coming from behind against Penn State
a week ago. Those are the three undefeated teams. Ohio
State really hasn't been challenged like that. Their freshman quarterback
hasn't been challenged like that, needing to make a comeback.
Speaker 11 (01:20:53):
You know, he's been.
Speaker 14 (01:20:54):
Pretty comfortable the entire year, I think. And we'll wait
and see what happens when they play against Michigan. But
I think that's the disadvantage going into the college football
playoff tournament because you need to know that you can
do that, and having not had that experience, I think
(01:21:15):
they're vulnerable. I would not bet them is the favorite
to win.
Speaker 2 (01:21:18):
This whole thing.
Speaker 6 (01:21:19):
Take the house.
Speaker 14 (01:21:21):
I'd take the house, I take the field, Take the field.
Speaker 6 (01:21:24):
Yeah exactly, Well, basically at that point in the season
where I mean kind of getting down to the nitty
grit and you'll have some big time, you know, rivalry
games coming up. I mean, are you expecting chaos or
would you? Does it feel like this season is more
destined for kind of the chalk what we're seeing right now,
Let's just say you know that there's not going to
(01:21:44):
be a ton of upheaval. As far as the College
Playoff is going.
Speaker 14 (01:21:48):
Well, I think it's really fascinating in the SEC because
there are still six teams that can finish with two
losses or better, and is there room for all six?
Therein lies the problem in the Big twelve. Is there
(01:22:09):
another team that's going to get in with Texas Tech
or derailed Texas Tech in the championship game? And if
in fact that happens, does that take two teams and
does that kick out another SEC team? So those are
all interesting things. It looks like Notre Dame has secured
their spot. They've got Syracuse left at home, which is
(01:22:31):
going to be a wildly overmatched team, and then they
travel to the West Coast to play Stanford. Sanford could
give them a fight, but the way Notre Dame's playing
right now, and the way they negotiated this deal in
the college football playoffs. I mean, they're sitting there as
still six spots ahead of Miami. We'll wait and see
what happens tonight. But Miami beat them. And I'm just
(01:22:53):
sitting there. If I'm Miami, i gotta be going crazy.
I mean, Miami beat North Carolina State this week the
same way that Notre Dame did. Why are they so
far behind him? And if you're talking about, you know,
penalties that should have been called, you know, Texas A
and m beating Notre Dame, they could say, hey, there
(01:23:14):
was a holding call that was blatantly missed. You could
point out Miami's lost SMU. There was a you know,
a necessary roughness penalty where the guy tried to hold
up hold up the quarterback. He just didn't near the
whistle and they called it on him to give the
SMU a chance for the game time field goal. So
it's it's just wildly advantageous for the Irish right now.
Speaker 6 (01:23:36):
M Rick new isil is with it. Certainly.
Speaker 1 (01:23:38):
Oklahoma shook things up last week with their win over Alabama.
Both of those teams should make it into the college
football playoff rankings, which will be revealed the latest little
later on tonight. I'm curious, though the Koogs have a
game at James Madison, they could have an effect on
keeping a team here out of the NCAA tournament. Would
(01:23:59):
the committee really consider James Madison as that twelfth and
final team or are they fighting a hopeless battle there?
Speaker 14 (01:24:07):
Well, given the kind of carnage that we're watching in
the American and the fact that San Diego State went
out and got beat at Hawaii, we're sitting here, I mean,
Navy's sitting at eight and two, Toulane's at eight and two.
Tulane has the signature went over Duke. North Texas is
at nine to one. With a win over Navy, North
(01:24:31):
Texas as a twelve and one American Conference champion, would
stay at would be ahead of James Madison. But the
projections are that North Texas won't get there, which is
why jmu' is getting all this love. The one loss
that James Madison had was to Louisville, which was a
pretty good team. They only lost by a couple of touchdowns.
(01:24:53):
So Bob Chesney, who's being rivered for some jobs out there,
included amongst is UCLA has done a nice job with
Jmu And if you're trying to capture a little of
that signetti magic, why wouldn't you go back there and
see if you can pluck another one of those guys?
Speaker 2 (01:25:10):
Why not? Leach Man.
Speaker 6 (01:25:13):
Yeah, this is that year or that week that typically happens,
and it's one that's kind of argued about. It seems
like every single year, and understandably so. Where the SEC,
I mean, like the few top teams in the SEC.
Alabama's playing Eastern Illinois, George's playing Charlotte, and Texas A
and M's playing Sandford. I mean, is this a thing
(01:25:33):
if we were to fast forward a week from now.
We'll talk to you next week as well, but that
you could see the committee punishing these guys for doing that.
If all of a sudden they stand pat and win
by forty, but another team that's playing somebody of their
caliber wins, they could end up losing a spot in
this thing.
Speaker 14 (01:25:52):
From your lips to God's ears, Bucky, But no, they're
not going to punish him. This was a genius move
years ago by Mike's Live and I pointed it out
years ago on the PAC twelve network, and no, one
took Heed. I mean, it's it's just an absolute gamesmanship
by moving one of your your by games, one of
those you know, easy games. And remember the SEC, at
(01:26:15):
least this season is still only playing eight conference games.
So to put this right in the in the penultimate
weekend of the season and had to say that that's
a game while everybody else is beating each other's brains
out and all these conference races. You can understand how
they went right to the top of the charts in
the CFP. It was brilliantly done and it was the
(01:26:37):
Mike's Live idea and they still do it. And so
we've got Charlotte at Georgia, We've got Mercer at Auburn,
Eastern Illinois at Alabama. I call these the Reindeer games,
Coastal Carolina at South Carolina, and Western Kentucky at LSU.
Last week it was Tennessee Tech at Kentucky. So yeah,
(01:26:58):
make of it what you will, but it is uh
Stamford at Texas A and M a thriller this week.
That will make five teams that A and M has
played this year who no longer have their head coach
that started to see.
Speaker 1 (01:27:12):
This, Wow, coach killer. Why the reindeer games? Am I
not catching onto something here? Why do you call them
the rain I'm.
Speaker 14 (01:27:19):
Just just the reindeer games just because they're just ridiculous games. Okay,
you know they shouldn't be there. I mean, but it's
genius scheduling, and it's because of the damage of a
late loss as compared to an early loss. Just put
these in there at the end and let everybody else
lose and the committee just doesn't catch on.
Speaker 1 (01:27:40):
Alabama facing the Island of Misfit Toys Tech this weekend.
Speaker 6 (01:27:45):
There you go, a great program. There's only favored over
Charlotte by forty five?
Speaker 2 (01:27:50):
Is that all?
Speaker 14 (01:27:50):
Charlie and the box playing quarterback.
Speaker 1 (01:27:52):
In that one? I think he's at Island of Misfit
Toys A and M if I'm not mistaken. Is with
us our college football insider? Of course, he does the
same thing for CBS Sports, and he's got a few
coaching credentials former UDUB head coach as we all know.
And a segment with us every week is brought to
(01:28:13):
you by Taco Time. All right, let's get to some
of these more intriguing games this weekend, and Big ten
might own the most intriguing one with the Oregon hosting USC.
I mean, it feels like Lincoln Riley has been skewered
by them by critics and understandably so ever since he
stepped foot on campus at USA.
Speaker 6 (01:28:35):
But don't look now. He's actually got them in position to.
Speaker 1 (01:28:39):
Maybe make the tournament. But he's going to need a
win at Oregon. Can he get that done?
Speaker 14 (01:28:46):
This is going to be a great contest because they
have played.
Speaker 2 (01:28:50):
Gritty this year.
Speaker 14 (01:28:51):
You got to give Lincoln credit for what they've done
to kind of make themselves a little bit more physical
from a standpoint of running the football. They've won a
couple of, you know, basic ground and pound type of
games against both Michigan and last week against Iowa. And
(01:29:13):
when you win those kind of games, you put yourself
in position to play for big prizes. And that's exactly
what will take place in Eugene. And give the Ducks
credit to they went to Kinnick Stadium and beat Iowa
in Iowa weather and basically held served and did so
again last week against Minnesota on a Friday night. So
(01:29:35):
this is going to be a great game. I think
Oregon has the advantage. I think Oregon's probably a little
bit more talented, except at the wide receiver position. But
if Dante More plays like he did against Minnesota, I'm
gonna take the ducks.
Speaker 1 (01:29:51):
And of course that's on CBS on CBS. Okay, all right,
I got the big one there.
Speaker 2 (01:29:57):
All right?
Speaker 1 (01:29:58):
How's this acc going to sh take out? And will
Georgia Tech versus Pitt have a say in that?
Speaker 2 (01:30:05):
Big time?
Speaker 14 (01:30:07):
Pitt gets to write their own story here at the end. Now,
they laid an egg against Notre Dame last week, but
if they can beat Georgia Tech and Georgia Tech's defense
has given up massive chunks of yardage. So if this
Mason Hinchel, that freshman quarterback can have a day again
and they can beat Georgia Tech at Georgia Tech, then
they'll get to play Miami the next week to get
(01:30:29):
a chance to be in the SEC excuse me, a
SEC championship. Virginia has a clear path. They just have
Virginia Tech. They get this week off, they get Virginia
Tech next week. But they've struggled against Virginia Tech over
the a long time. And you know who's sneaking around
the chicken coop is SMU. SMU only has one loss.
(01:30:50):
They get Louisville at home this week. Louisville lost again
last week to Clemson, so they're out. But if they
knock off Louisville, then they're going to go to cal
to try to also be in that number that can
be playing in Charlotte. So much still to be determined
in the ACC, and there's only going to be one
team that emerges.
Speaker 1 (01:31:09):
Cincinnati BYU. Is that a playoff game in essence? Or
Cincinnati do they have too big of a hurdle to overcome?
Speaker 14 (01:31:18):
Cincinnati can get there. If Cincinnati knocks off BYU, that
gives BYU the second loss in the conference, and that
makes Cincinnati on par and they would own the tiebreaker. Unfortunately,
Cincinnati lost to Utah, so then other things come into play.
And I haven't done all that math yet.
Speaker 2 (01:31:36):
But.
Speaker 14 (01:31:38):
Utah is hoping like heck that Cincinnati can pull this
off so they can get themselves another chance at the
Red Raiders. But if you're Brett, your mark for and
the commissioner of the league, you want BYU to get
to Arlington against Texas Tech because those two teams, I think,
(01:31:59):
regardless of the out would both get into the playoffs, all.
Speaker 6 (01:32:02):
Right, nice. All right, So what is our Taco Time
pick of the week for this week?
Speaker 14 (01:32:09):
I think we're gonna take b YU at Cincinnati. We're
gonna take them. I think that they're they're worth the
look there, it was an impressive win getting off the
mat after losing last week to Texas Tech. They came
back and got TCU and got them soundly. So I'm
going to take the Cougars this week.
Speaker 1 (01:32:29):
So you're not going to take Eastern Illinois on the
money line, That's what I'm gonna glean.
Speaker 14 (01:32:34):
I'm deciding against it. Yeah, I'm trying to think of
another character from Rudolph to see if the Island of
missed with toys? Who else could be on the d
L there?
Speaker 6 (01:32:47):
Well, Ukon Cornelius is out.
Speaker 14 (01:32:49):
Great defensive line is out with a pickaxe injury.
Speaker 1 (01:32:56):
Oh it happens way too often. Back up there, dangerous
place to play football.
Speaker 7 (01:33:03):
All right?
Speaker 1 (01:33:04):
Well, so last minute? What I mean Washington Ucla? I
mean you've got ties to both these programs, and you
got a Sun coaching. I mean, what kind of memories
does that stir up? And Rick new Heiseel's past?
Speaker 14 (01:33:18):
So the first time we played him, I'm the head
coach now at Washington my first year, we beat Stanford
and now we actually have a chance to go and
get ourselves into the Rose Bowl, win the conference. We've
got a path, and we go. But Marcus got hurt
against Stanford. Despite the fact that he set an NCAA
(01:33:39):
record three hundred yards passing and two hundred yards rushing,
he had hurt his backside, so to speak, and couldn't practice.
So we get there and he's going to play, but
I mean, he's stiff as a board, and so we
struggle a little bit offensively. We kick a fifty six
yard field goal to get ourselves into overtime. John Anderson
hit it, and now we're going to go into overtime,
(01:34:01):
and he's trying to hit I think he's trying to
hit Todd Elstrom on a corner route, or maybe he
was trying to hit Jeremy Stevens on a steam route,
and he should have been thrown it to Elstrom on
the corner route, and we threw a pick and end
up losing in overtime to UCLA. We'd beat Washington State
the next week, and the ifs and butts just kicked
(01:34:23):
flowing through my mind. But I'll tell you all those
kids were back last week for the reunion of that
twenty five year reunion of the Rose Bowl team, and
they had a blast. I got a great picture, a
bunch of smiling faces of some forty year olds that
have a memory for a lifetime.
Speaker 6 (01:34:40):
That's awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:34:41):
All right, Well, enjoy the football this weekend and we'll
talk to you next Tuesday.
Speaker 11 (01:34:46):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:34:47):
See you now.
Speaker 1 (01:34:48):
The one, the only Rick new Isle joining us right
here on Chalking Buck in the morning is segment brought
to you by the Delicious Food at Taco Time. They
buy their own advertising. The food is just that.
Speaker 6 (01:34:59):
Advanced, alright.
Speaker 1 (01:35:00):
Coming up next, the Old Judge stops by Sports Radio
ninety three point three kJ RFM.
