Speaker 1 (00:00):
Pleasing gentlemen, behold introducing six one guard from Brighton, Illinois
and former high school basketball stand.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What the hell does that mean? Jumped any conclusions? Not
a god, You've got to lower lower your expectations.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Hard to believe he could once send a fastball to Pluto.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
I'm getting some Bucky Jacobson vibes and former I'll just
openly admit I'm a fat, out of shaped X athlete.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Now there's been a noticeable spike in your blood pressure.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Five seven guard and a former college waterfolo national champions.
Speaker 5 (00:36):
A lot of useless crap up here.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Wow, this is Chuck and Buck in the Morning with
Ashley Ryan.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
What do you buy to lay?
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Look casino resort and quilseed The Creek Draft KINI sports
book where the action never stopped?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Are you ready to get you?
Speaker 6 (01:07):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Good morning and welcome in. It is the Thursday edition
of Chucking Buck in the Morning Sports Radio ninety three
point three KJRFM. We welcome you to this four hour
extravaganza as we get things started here. A lot to
discuss here today, but primarily it will be focused on
the big football game on Sunday, the biggest game of
(01:27):
the year. So far for the Seattle Seahawks. We'll get
to that in the moment. Ashley Ryan's here, former Mariner,
Bucky Jacobson. My name is Chuck Powell. We welcome you
to the show. I'm a little bit distracted. Adam Schefter
is wearing like short sleeve shirt on the set today
on the television that's here in the studios, and either
he's wearing a long sleeve shirt underneath made to look
(01:52):
like his arms are fully tatted, or Adam Schefter is
fully tatted. Oh, I'm not really sure. It's very distracting.
Speaker 7 (01:59):
I think we're gonna see ch was on distracted. No, no,
this would be more distracting.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Charm.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
What a great reminder that is. Yeah, lucky, we need
to find that. We'll get to that.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
Yeah, Adam Schefter have tattoos.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yeah, but yeah, that charmed. Uh. I really don't know
what it's about, but what an awesome show. It's amazing. Yeah,
one of my favorite shows. Is that what it's about?
That's all I know. Okay, there's always some weird stuff
going on. I'll say yeah when we don't when we
watch it without the sound on, right, Yeah, sure.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
The dialog wonderful I don't know, but yeah, it's a
great show.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, okay, there is. Did you see it? Oh? You
missed it? So I don't know. That's like the last
human being on Earth I would have thought would have
been tatted up. I mean, full sleeve colored tattoos from
all the way down to the hands.
Speaker 7 (02:51):
What would be more shocking though, that he was fully
tatted up, or that he was the type of guy
to where fake sleeves to make it look like he
was tatted up.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Well, if it's like some sort of.
Speaker 5 (03:01):
Like designer shirt, no no, no, no.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
If it's like some sort of gag, we can't hear
the audio, it's sort of like Charms.
Speaker 5 (03:08):
It's very much like Charms.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
We can't hear the audio. So maybe there's like some
inside joke there. Maybe he's doing it to be funny,
maybe to catch coworkers off guard. I don't know. There
could be a background story to it. But yes, if
he just like showed up with a tattoo shirt on, yeah,
that would be weirder.
Speaker 5 (03:29):
But someone tweeted it out too with a picture of her.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah, So I don't know. And we never even see
him in a short sleeve shirt, so he's usually you know,
at a tie or something like that, or at home
in front of his bookshelf doing reports where he looks
completely tired, like he hasn't slept in three days because
he just has to tell you the latest Arizona Cardinal
(03:52):
injury report on Walter Nolan. Yeah, but you gotta be
my eye. Yeah, that's a shirt. That's a shirt.
Speaker 7 (04:02):
But also why the other two guys are wearing suits
and he's wearing that shirt and a T shirt over it.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Like that's like there's got to be some sort of
insight story.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
It's weird happening. He lost a bet.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Maybe maybe that's what it is. But that really caught
me off guard too.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
I can't understand.
Speaker 7 (04:16):
I saw this picture here and it is If I'd
seen that on TV in a fleeting moment, I would
have gone, what in the heck?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Wouldn't be the guy that I would have thought did that?
But yeah, I think it is a shirt now that
I mean, we're not giving a great glimpse of it.
But anyway, I'm sorry to distract you. I'm sure that
you listening are like, it's a visual radio. Boy, we
can't see it. We don't know what you're talking about.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
But I'm glad we covered it or got rid of
it there.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
But it did catch me off guard, and so I
thought that that I would cover it for you, Bucky.
Did you get the family back everybody home safe?
Speaker 4 (04:47):
Family made it back safe. Yes, it was what you
do to celebrate.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Did you join hands around the Christmas tree and sing carols?
Speaker 7 (04:54):
No?
Speaker 2 (04:55):
First of all, we're normal.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
We don't put our Christmas tree up disappointed their major halliday.
You love your children, yeah, yep, yeah, yeah, so that
they can actually help participate in it when the time
is right. I do love them, I loved I love
them so much. I'm a teaching proper timing. I think
that's important. Uh, you know, not overlooking one great holiday
(05:19):
in search of another.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Uh yeah, So I love it was.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
It was wonderful to be able to hug him and
and see him and hear the stories Bear doing boogie
boarding and Gracie making sand castles, and he come.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Home with all necklace.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
No, but a really cool Hawaii shirt and a hat
big wave on themse. No, he didn't do that, he said,
he's still in photos.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Was given the peace side. No, he didn't know, he
didn't go that far. He did get a little color
addicted to poke.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
No, No, I don't think he went I don't think
he really dove into the.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Culture say that much.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
Did he just spam?
Speaker 7 (06:01):
Then?
Speaker 2 (06:02):
I don't even think he probably went there.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
I'm gonna guess he was really excited about the smash
burgers I made for him yesterday.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
He was that was He was like, that's nice, this
feels like good. They didn't run into like a tiki
doll that was cursed like that, like a Rady bunch
dead years ago.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
No, Luckily, No, that well, at least I don't know yet.
I didn't inquire about any tea.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
They probably wouldn't tell me Idols if he fell victim
do anything. I thought you loved your children, I do.
I didn't ask him I came across a cursed tiky doll.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
I didn't. I was busy asking about their submarine trip.
They went on a submarine like one hundred feet and
saw some ship wreckage.
Speaker 7 (06:43):
I also don't think they tell him about the tek
doll because he might not allow him back home if
he were cursed that tarantula.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
It almost got to.
Speaker 7 (06:51):
Greg Taranela is in Hawaii. What kind of craziness was
on the breaking.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I'm not sure that the Globe trot Or or were
they on there too, or was that Gildigan's Island. Anyway,
Good morning, Welcome into the radio show. Glad to have
the whole Jacobson clan back together, Ashley and I slept
better last night knowing the family was back together. You
did yea singing around the Christmas tree? All right?
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Man?
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Well, Seahawks Rams on Sunday. I mean, I mean, in
terms of a mid season, regular season affair, it just
can't get much bigger than this matchup. I even went
in to see my sushi guy prematurely this week. Usually
go on a Thursday or Friday. Saw him on a Wednesday,
and he couldn't stop talking about Seahawks Rams to me,
(07:40):
so Perry switched on. I'll tell you that much right now.
But Perry, Yeah, phenomenal matchup for this week. We outlined
it a little bit. I think it's worth sort of repeating.
I mean, not only seven and two teams atop the
NFC West right now, they are arguably, maybe inarguably the
two hottest teams in the National Football League. They're not
(08:01):
only beating their opponents, they are dominating their opponents here
in the last couple of weeks. Top five offenses, both teams,
top five defenses, both teams, red hot general managers, both teams,
red hot head coaches, both teams, both under the age
of forty two quarterbacks that are in the MVP conversation.
(08:22):
As good an array of pass catchers as you're going
to see on one field with JSN, DeVante Adams and
Puka Nakua if Adams plays, I mean, there's just nothing
that this game doesn't have. And so we get ready
to embark upon it. And in a lot of ways
today we're going to be discussing this football game. But
(08:43):
you just can't overstate just how excellent this matchup is
and what a treat we're getting this early in the
football season.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
Yeah, I mean, I know, Cooper Cup's not the Cooper
Cup that he was with the Rams, but I think
this is this first game that he's going back to
play in that place too, Right, there's a lot of
storylines behind it. And typically if you just get to
a division rival for the first time and you're both
doing well, that in and of itself, you're like, well,
this is going to be a good matchup. But all
the other stuff that you just outlined, how prolific their
(09:14):
offenses are, how dominant their defenses are, how much their
role in the NFL, which is typically just not set
up for that. I mean, you typically have battles regardless
of who you're going up against. It it might be
one where it's like you should win this game. But
I mean I feel like there's been more times you,
or well certainly Greg, more than we've ever heard him,
(09:37):
has said boy, I think they could run away with
this one a couple of different times. Usually we're like,
could be a could I could see them running away
with it, but I could also see this being a
tight game. We've had times where we're leading into games
thinking there we're talking about past game, Okay, yeah, this game, no, no, no,
this season, there's just been times where we're talking about
(09:59):
the Seahawks and it's like they kind of feels like
they're going to roll these guys. Whereas I mean, I
think I count on one hand how many times I've
heard that or thought that in the eight nine years
that we've been doing this job. It just feels like
they're are They almost always played close games, even if
they were playing against somebody that they maybe should roll
and yet this one is not going to be that.
(10:19):
And yet that's because they're going against another team that
has the same type of narrative around them that they're
rolling over the teams they should roll over.
Speaker 7 (10:28):
There.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
They're winning on both sides of the ball, they're well coached,
they're young, The cultures are established. Obviously, I think the
RAMS culture is more established, but that's just simply because
McVeigh has been there for nine ten years or whatever
it's been. And yet McDonald does feel like he's taken
a shortcut to the culture building aspect of things, and
he's got this team kind of all pointed in the
(10:49):
right direction and rowing in the same direction.
Speaker 7 (10:51):
I will tell you though, having it be in La,
seeing the way that this team has played on the
road to this season, is even more exciting to me.
Like if it was at home, we haven't played as
well at home, and I'd be not that I'm not
nervous either way, because it's going to be a great game.
But if you can continue to play the way you've
played on the road in this game and take that
(11:11):
win in their house, I mean that's a big, big
damn deal.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
What's really strange is I think that most football fans
sort of gravitate toward offense, and I think that that's
a fantasy football thing that has sort of shifted that narrative.
People see Sam Darnold and Matt Stafford having the years
that they're having, and I think most my impression is
(11:35):
they're expecting some sort of like shootout in this game.
And I think what's gotten severely overlooked, at least where
I've been looking, is how great both of these teams
are defensively. And yes, Sean McVay is an offensive minded
head coach, but he clearly wants a great defense too,
and they have achieved that in Los Angeles and throughout.
(11:58):
Despite all of our all defensive surprise excellence thirty points
six points per game so far this season, we are
still based on a defensive foundation here in Seattle. I
think this might be a bit of a lower scoring game.
I think that everybody that's looking at all the weapons
and what have you, I mean, it's I think maybe
(12:21):
we could be in store for, you know, something in
the low twenties here in this contest. And it just
can't be overlooked how well both of these teams are
playing defensively. I mean, even giving up twenty two points
last week against the Arizona Cardinals, that doesn't really tell
the story about how the defense took over that game. Remember,
(12:42):
we scored two defensive touchdowns in that contest. So I
think it's going to be a little lower scoring. To
your point, bucket, I think it's going to be a
tight game on Sunday. I'd be surprised. I'd like to
hear the reasoning for anybody that thinks it's going to
be a blowout one way or the other. And and
I think that getting Ernest Jones back for this game
(13:04):
could be essential. I know Tyree Knight's coming off a
huge game in terms of the havoc he created, but
make no mistake about it, Ernest Jones is the stabilizing
force on this defense at that position, and so having
him back to participate in what I think is going
to be a lower scoring game than what is being
predicted is going to be just huge for the Seahawks. Yeah,
(13:28):
I'm the idea.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
I mean, we know in the NFL that typically if
you're the starter, they get you back out there as
soon as you can possibly go. I would wonder if
there would because of the way in which his backup
played and created opportunities that kind of blew that game
open really really quick. If it wouldn't be all right,
if you're ready to rock and roll, cool, but maybe
(13:51):
you do kind of ease back into it. Typically inside linebackers. No,
I'm going to stop you right there, No way. I mean,
Tyrese Knight made two big plays. But as Hugh broke
down for us on Monday, a lot of that with
scheme and being in the right place at the right time.
Ernest Jones is flat out just the better interior linebacker,
and you need him and if he's close, if he's
(14:13):
game ready, you're not gonna play the game that you
played with Witherspoon earlier in the year, where you're like,
we got a bye week next week, we got a
kind of a soft opponent going into this. Maybe we
don't have to rush him. Nope, Ernest Jones, if he
can play at all, you're playing them.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Yeah. Yeah, I mean I agree, I think that you should.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
I mean, it's one of those how if he was
not quite one hundred percent but he was ready to
he says he can go, Okay, Well, then is there
a time when maybe it's maybe it's you are wanting
to send a blitz and he did do well when
you send him on a blitz last week, and so
maybe you're like, hey, we can we can.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Swop him in and out. He still plays a lot.
I mean, he just isn't gonna be the mic. Yeah,
he still plays a lot. I mean tyr Snak can
still have a role and can you can haul up
that blitz for Tyres Knight. It's just that there's no
way if Ernest Jones says I'm ready to go that
he's not your guy, right, well, I don't think. I
don't think you would do that.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
I'm just saying I think that there there is a
discussion about if let's just say he's coming back and
he's ninety percent, then you could say, okay, well we
can at times we can roll him in there to
just give Ernest Jones a little bit of a breather
at certain times. I'm not saying that they're going to
be like, boy, we really got to be careful or
we could possibly overlook this game and we've got to
(15:33):
make sure that you're healthy for the long haul.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
I think that it's going to be.
Speaker 4 (15:36):
More of the status quo, which is all right, you
say you're ready to go, the trading staff says.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
You're ready to go. Then you're in there and you're
doing things exactly the way you were.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
It's just nice to have the fact that you don't
feel like you're taking some drastic step back, even though
it's obvious that there's one of them is the guy
that you want starting and has started every game since
he's been here, and that's he's going to get all
the snaps that he can. It's just if he's not
one hundred percent healthy, then maybe they're there's more rest
in store form.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
Well, and he's going against his former team too, which
tends to light someone's hair on fire.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Yeah, and I don't think it will Cooper Cup, I
don't think, but I think it will Ernest Jones, And
I don't know why. I don't think he was mistreated.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
It's just you get a little extra pumped up.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, I guess he did end
up having to go to Tennessee.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
He could be mad about that.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Yeah, maybe he's got revenge on his mind. Maybe he's
cursed a tiki torch, for all I know, a tiki.
Speaker 5 (16:26):
Doll most likely.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Yeah, so we shall see. But man, I mean, there's
just so many fascinating elements of this game to break
down before the end of the week. And let's tell
you what's on tap for today's show. What's on tip?
What's on tap? All right, So they're showing Adam Schefter now,
so yeah, there's some sort of inside jokey thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
(16:50):
he was throwing everybody off. Everybody was like emailing end
of the show. When did Adam Schefter have tats? And
he is clearly wearing a shirt underneath? Yeah, and so
why he's doing it I still don't know. But yes,
they're now finally addressing the elephant in the room.
Speaker 7 (17:07):
It would be nice, though, if they'd make it more
obvious for those who are not listening to the sound,
if they could just hold up a sign that said
I wanted to mess with people.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
I think all of his sleep deprivation and all of
the you know, cell waves that have gone through his
head by having a cell phone next to his ear
might be finally getting to him. Possible. I think Schefter
might be losing his mind. Yeah, it's possible. I think
I think it's finally caught up sleep is important. You know,
he was our NFL insider back when I worked at
Sports Fan in Vegas. He you know, before anybody knew him,
(17:41):
he was our He worked out of Denver, and he
was our NFL insider at the network, and they were all.
We had a lot of them. Jason Stark was our
MLB guy Hall of Famer by the way, Jason Stark, E. J.
Raddick was our hockey guy. You know, we had a
lot of them. I mean I got to get my boss,
Charlie bark or credit. We kind of we were doing
(18:02):
this insider stuff really before they gave themselves to it
at ESPN. And all of them acknowledge that Jay Glazer
was on our network. They all acknowledge that what a
great experience that was, and it really was a nice
(18:22):
stepping stone to our careers. And they have great appreciation
for it, except Adam Schefter, who acts like he never
did it. Oh really, that's weird. So there you go,
just a little insight into less Seahawks rams. Sunday at
one today, the twelfth Man round Table. This is the
most important round table in years eight to nine. Humellon
(18:45):
and Greg Bell will gather together to talk about the
Seahawks rams Thursday Night football gets the brand new week
of the football season underway. The Jets will be at
New England. The Patriots are heavy favorites in this game.
I think like twelve than a half points. Yeah, it's
not one of your better Thursday night football games of
the year. But I'm gonna tell you this right now.
(19:07):
The whiskey don't mind. The whiskey don't mind how good
the football game is. So I'm gonna billy you up.
Speaker 7 (19:14):
Yeah, whiskey better be on hand on Monday Night football too,
when the Cowboys play the race.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Whiskey doesn't care what's on television, really doesn't true. Mike
Sander will join us today at nine thirty. Cowboys. I
don't know if anybody saw this, but the Cowboys finally
had a chance as a team to mourn their teammate
Marshawn Neeland apparently yesterday. If we've got time, hopefully we
can play this audio. But Brian Schottenheimer unscripted. I've heard
(19:41):
really good things about Brian Schottenheimer the person over time,
and even though he was here, never got to know
him personally, that's for sure. But unscripted, no tell aprompter
delivered about as good a speech that you would ever
want here, not even a speech. He was just being
(20:01):
interviewed at as press conference and it's like, man, you
could not have said that better, and and what the
words that came out of your mouth, and though how
genuine you came across. I now kind of get why
I brought Brian Schottenneimer has such a good reputation. He
got done with that speech, and I'm like, okay, I
want to play for that guy. You know that's that's
(20:23):
how good that speech was. So maybe we'll have some
time to play so we.
Speaker 5 (20:26):
Could play it before headlines too. Is it possibility?
Speaker 2 (20:28):
Yeah, well yeah, if we if we can, if we
can work something out, College football Huskies will be home
to produce. Softy will join us at seven o five,
but he wants to talk about Cal's MVP and he
wants to talk about college football playoff rankings because apparently
he was listening yesterday and felt like I did him wrong.
(20:49):
So at seven oh five, Softy will take me to task,
So you might want to tune in for that. College
basketball Dogs and Cougs are going to meet tomorrow night
at eight o'clock. If you want to just check out
some college hoops because it probably is a better game
than the Thursday night football game Number two Purdue versus
number eight Alabama. The Kraken will be taking on the Jets.
(21:10):
Kraken and the Jets, so they're going to play tonight
out of Climate Pledge Arena. And the Major League Baseball
Awards continue this week. Paul Skeens and Trek Scuball were
named cy Young Award winners yesterday. Skeens was unanimous. Schooball
(21:33):
got twenty six out of the thirty first place votes.
Brian Woo did not get a first, second, or third
place vote, but he did finish fifth and the cy
Young voting, and so he can tell his he can
tell his neighbors. I did finish. I am a top
five cy Young finalist. Not the worst, yeah exactly. So
you know what, congratulations because I think that's awesome for Brian,
(21:56):
top five finisher. He's a good dude. For the SAI
Young Award. But of course, the big award this week
is the American League MVP. People haven't been able to
stop talking about this all season long. Tonight we're gonna
find out, is it Aaron Judge Boo or is it
the hero cal Rawley. We'll discuss it next here on
Chuck and Buck Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ
(22:18):
RFM forty times it chanting MVP.
Speaker 8 (22:28):
Climb on, Huh Catcher pats ten sixty home runs your MVP, Chay.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
Well, I don't know if any player topic was more
discussed during the course of the Major League Baseball season
and who should win MVP. It became pretty clear probably
around the All Star break that it was going to
come down to Cal Raley of the Seattle Mariners and
Aaron Judge of the mighty New York Yankees. And that
(23:15):
conversation was held throughout the second half of the season.
And it's been talked about so much that it's almost
like two political parties at this point. You know, it's
the Catcher party and the whistle Teeth party, because you know,
there's people have certainly chosen their guy. You're not really
(23:35):
hearing a lot of you know, you know, I'm still
on the fence because it's been discussed so much by
now you if you know, if you have the ability
to draw an opinion at all, you should have probably
reached your opinion as to who you think is going
to win the Most Valuable Player Award, But the announcement's
going to be made tonight. Obviously we can't wait to
(23:57):
hear the result. We want to finally have an answer
to this question. I do know that it's going to
be tight. I do know i'd vote for Cal, and
I do believe Aaron Judge is probably going to win it,
just based off of the conversations I've heard on MLB
Network across their panel a lot of different sports writers
(24:18):
Bucky that are tied in to a lot of other
sports writers and feel like they've got their finger on
the pulse more so than I do. But I think
there's certainly a chance that I can be pleasantly surprised.
Cal's definitely got a chance to be crowned MVP tonight.
A good chance, Yeah, it does, and rightfully so.
Speaker 4 (24:35):
I mean, I mean, I don't think it should be
really as big of a debate. It's a wonderful debate,
and I mean, one thing I want to make perfectly
clear is when I'm saying I don't think it should
be close in my opinion, it's not close.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
That's not taken away from Judge at all. Judge is spectacular.
I mean, Judge is unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
But it's the idea of to me that there's just
a there's a bit of a short sightedness, or there's
a there's parts of the numbers that that people will
look into that just plain and simple can't tell the
truth and the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Uh,
you know, are you gonna go with judges steady, brilliance
and amazing, I mean absolutely out of this world MVB,
(25:21):
MVP caliber without a doubt, offensive numbers. And then there's
some people or the cal Rawley's you know, his power surge,
and it's like, but that doesn't that a statement like
that doesn't even come close to telling the whole truth.
It just it just doesn't to me. Cal Rawley's home
runs are impressive, and yes, should be recognized for doing
(25:41):
what he did that no catcher's ever done and no
switch hitters ever done. That's saying something right, But at
the same time, it's that's just a piece of it.
I mean just a piece, And I mean I ended
up spending time last night looking into a bunch of
different stuff that they're saying the voters are gonna go
into different saber metrics that you know dial in your
you know, most of these offensive sabermetrics are going to
(26:04):
be advantage Judge, and understandably so. I mean they hit
three thirty and you know, drove in a ton of runs.
And still it's not like you hit twenty homers and
you're comparing them againstbody hit sixty. I mean, he still
hit a ton of home runs and drove in a
bunch of guys. I mean, he did unbelievably. It's he's
definitely the more feared hitter at the plate. It's just
a most valuable player to me. When they start looking
(26:26):
into things, you're fielding runs or whatever that what is
it called the fielding runs average or how many runs
you save a game compared to someone else, and it
has because Aaron Judge is pretty good in right field.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
Typically he's good. It hasn't made this year because he
played d H a lot because of his injury, but
the numbers still come out that he was a four
and that Calroy was a five.
Speaker 4 (26:51):
It's like, no, no, sorry, they're not even close to
one run difference over the course of a full season
of how much they helped their team when they're on
the defensive side of the ball, and so it just
there's a lot of it that I think just gets
to some degree overlooked how difficult that position is. All
of the things that you can't put a number on,
Well there, it's all a game and all that stuff.
(27:13):
You can't put a number on that, And so to
me's it shouldn't even be close. Even though what Aaron
Judge did that he needs to be in any conversation
about most valuable player period.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Well, without a shadow of a doubt, there are things
cal Rawley does that they can't put a number on, like,
for example, how he affects every single pitch thrown by
the Mariners pitching staff. You know, he pretty much makes
every decision on which pitch everybody throws to throughout the
course of the season. The leadership that he brings, and
(27:43):
Aaron Judge brings just as much leadership, So we can
make that clear. But but they don't have a stat
that can quantify how much value Cal's knowledge of other
hitters behind the plate brings to the table. So literally
they can't calculate Col's value defensively, to Aaron Judge, they
(28:05):
don't have a number as many stats as they've come
up with. They don't have a stat to figure out
just how much he's helping his pitchers get through hitters
on a daily basis. But I do think that it
is very close. I mean, Aaron Judge has two hundred
plus points in OPS over cal and that's after a
sixty home run season. For goodness sake, he has a
(28:28):
two point fifteen OPS plus. That's one of the greatest
numbers in the history of the sport offensively, even war,
which is supposed to factor in everything. Aaron's is nine
point seven, Cowls is seven point four. I mean, that's
kasmic that gap. But as you said, there are some
things that those numbers just can't calculate. In regards to
(28:50):
cal Raley's value, I do definitively think cal Raley is
going to win the should win the MVP, but I
do think it's very close. I likened it to a
sprint yesterday. That's a mistake baseball season everybody tells you
as a marathon. I mean, you can definitively win a
marathon by fifteen yards and that's still a very close race. Yeah,
(29:15):
you know, after twenty six miles of competing. You know,
one one in Seattle, one in New York. That's still
a very close marathon if it comes down to fifteen
meters after you ran twenty six miles, And that's what
I'd like in.
Speaker 7 (29:30):
It too, Ashley, Yeah, no, I would agree, And I
do think obviously, as Bucky said, you know, one doesn't
take away from the other, right, Saying that you think
Cal deserves it over Judge or should win it over
Judge or vice versa, isn't taking away from the phenomenal
performance that both of these guys had this season.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
But I do think only one could win the trophy.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
Well, we think, right, that's true.
Speaker 7 (29:51):
Maybe it is especially right He's like, let's go co
that's my job, my thought. But I just think, yeah,
as you guys were saying, there's so many things that
Cal does with every single aspect of the game versus
what Judge is doing not with every single aspect of
the game, and those are the things that push him
over the top and should push him over the top
(30:12):
in most people's opinion, because just because it's not something
you can look at in a stat call him on
you know, ESPN dot com, doesn't mean that those things
aren't equally.
Speaker 5 (30:22):
As large of a factor in every single game.
Speaker 7 (30:24):
And on top of it, the where and Terry's putting
on his body on every single game and he's.
Speaker 6 (30:29):
Still hitting, He's playing a more demanding position and was
still posting every single day in the lineup, whereas Aaron
Judge had an injury.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
Not that to fault him for it, but you weren't
as really, you weren't as as available as the dude
that plays a position that takes foul balls and has
to block our fastball.
Speaker 7 (30:50):
Yeah, and it's not the most offensive player award. It
is the most valuable player award, and to a t
to his team was a I think, far more valuable player,
far more.
Speaker 4 (31:03):
Yeah, I mean it's I'm glad we're gonna get to
talk about it more. And I'm sure we'll talk about
it tomorrow more tomorrow, you know, once we find out
the results of it. I know it's close, and I
understand why because of how outstanding Judges offensive season was.
It just is when you take if it was like
you said, if you take it as the most outstanding.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Guy that walks into.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
A batter's box, then it's Aaron Judge, even though he
didn't hit as many home runs and didn't drive in
as many runs, even though he didn't do a couple
things as well as Cal didn't do put up the
same offensive season that he did. It just is not
even a contest when you come to comparing the other two,
the other side of the equation and then the third side,
if you want to call it that, which is the
(31:49):
stuff you're talking about that you can't put a number
on the amount of effort he puts into call in games,
you know, helping his pitchers set up game plans before games,
the beating that he takes, there's just not a when
you're talking about strictly value across the board, one is
more valuable than the other, and that's cal Rally.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
All right. We'll talk more about a little bit later
on in the show. Coming up next, a tale of
two wide receivers and why our guys smelling like a
Rose Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM, maybe a
couple of other things. I'm sure he's got a though
or two on Cal Rawley, whether or not he's going
to win the MVP. Tonight. So Softy, your all purpose
sports talk show host, will be joining us today at
(32:30):
seven oh five. It's Thursdays with Softy and of course
we're all getting ready for the Sunday matchups Seahawks versus Rams.
Cooper Cup, it takes on a little different meaning for him.
The only professional football team that he knew as a
professional was the Los Angeles Rams. And yet the only
team that he rooted for as a kid was the
Seattle Seahawks. And he now wears the Seahawks uniform. And
(32:52):
so he goes back to Los Angeles for the very
first time and typical Cooper Cup, this is not at
all about me. I can promise you that in his
press conference, I can't make this about me returning home.
We got a game to win. You gotta love Cooper Cup.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
Yeah, I mean I think that ever since he came here,
even before he came here, I mean, people maybe didn't
like him because he was unbelievable when he was wearing
a Rams uniform. Maybe Seahawk fans like, dang that guy.
Even though he's from Yakaman.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
They still, I think kind of liked him. I couldn't
help the root for you, Jakama kid that's turned in
some out to one of the best receivers ever.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Yeah, and yet they didn't want him to go off
like he did plenty of times. I mean even last year,
there was the first game, the last game against the Rams.
You know, they didn't necessarily play everybody, and so I
don't know how much stock you want to put into that,
but the first game he ended up kind of going off.
And so it's not that long ago that he was
doing good things for the Rams and then for whatever reason,
(33:49):
they decided, hey, we kind of have to you know,
Pookinaku has moved into that spot and paying you what
we would have to pay you to be the number
two guy.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Well, they they simply pulled what they did with golf
AND's I mean, I think this is Sean McVay. They
had a guy that took him to the super Bowl
in Jared Goff, and then Sean McVay was like, yeah,
but that Matt Stafford can win us one. So even
though we've got a good guy, we got a chance
to get a great guy. And I think they did
the same thing this offseason. Even though Cooper Cup we
(34:18):
still really like he is on the decline, and I
think that's very evident based on what he's done as
a Seahawk. DeVante Adams might not be so they felt
they had a chance put sentimentality aside and get a
better wide receiver. And it's kind of worked out that
way for them. But I'm glad we have Cooper.
Speaker 4 (34:36):
Yeah, man, I think that that was probably difficult for Cooper, right,
I mean, when you put as much into an organization
as he did, and obviously he seems I don't think
he just learned his professionalism when he showed up here
at Virginia Mason and Athletic Center.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
I think that that's who he's been.
Speaker 4 (34:51):
And when you're kind of that guy, a company guy
that just towes the line and goes out and works
your butt off and puts up crazy numbers and helps
win a Super Bowl, and and then they kind of go,
thanks dude, but maybe.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Think you're it's a business.
Speaker 4 (35:04):
You know, maybe at half a step, we think we
can gain it elsewhere and still keep that veteran thing
like you're talking about with DeVante Adams versus him.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
That's probably not.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
Easy to hear when your employer says, thanks, but we're done.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
Well. It's worked out for both teams. I mean, obviously
the Rams have have gotten even better with Adams over
Cup and the Seahawks offense Cup feels like a really
nice addition to it. And don't sleep on what Hugh
and Greg have been telling us as well, and that
is what Cooper cups professionalism knowledge has done for JSN
(35:43):
to emerge and become an even better player. So yeah,
I mean, Cooper Cups probably not performing statistically like we're
paying him, but I think everybody in the organization is
glad we rolled the dice on Cooper Cup versus bringing
DK back.
Speaker 4 (36:02):
Yes, one percent, the idea of I mean a guy
that was at one point the best wide receiver on
the planet who now has been relegated to you know,
getting a few targets a game and you know, hey,
we're going to throw it to you from time to time.
But we got this youngster that's just basically breaking out
and letting the league know that I'm I'm for real.
(36:24):
And so to take to go from being the best
uh to then you're not even the best on your
own team is not a pill that a lot of
professional athletes can swallow and swallow in a professional way
to where they they don't have to bark and yap
about it. They just say, okay, that's fine, I mean
to some degree his My biggest issue with him or
(36:45):
not issue. My biggest fear with him was health and
can you can you withstand a seventeen game schedule. Well,
you he have a better chance of having him for
the whole year and when it matters towards the end
of the year, if he's not being targeted fifteen times
he was when he was a RAM, if it's three
or four times, and make you know, a couple first
down conversions, maybe a big play here and there. When
(37:07):
if they do start to double team Jackson, then you
you find a way to be open. I think that
he brings a lot to the table when it comes
to all those I got a sneaky suspicion.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
He's going to play a really good game this weekend.
I hope. So yeah, yeah, yeah, we all hope.
Speaker 7 (37:19):
Well, but that big play that against Arizona last week
was perfect. I mean if yeah, they've used him perfectly there.
I think you do something like that again.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Yeah. I'm in Headline's next Softy Sports Radio ninety three
point three kh A RFM
