Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now from the start Reinles sports to us Jordan ninety
three point three JJRFM Sports Headlines.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Sports Headlines at five o'clock brought to you by Benu
Kings dot com.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Josh Allen. We haven't talked about this, Jackson.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
We got to do this now, Josh Allen edging out
Lamar Jackson for the ap MVP Award, closest vote since
Matt Ryan beat Tom Brady in twenty sixteen. Saquon Barkley
finishing a distant third, did win the Offensive Player of
the Year award.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Crack and lose.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Their third straight, this time to Toronto three to one
last night at Climate Pledge. They faced Calgary tomorrow at
seven o'clock in their final game before the Four Nations
tournament break. But Anders it just is it already playing
out the string? A? Are we giving them one more game?
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (00:42):
No, they're playoffs the review year. Oh gosh, my goodness.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Well, the good news is for the Crack and they
got their captain, Jordan Beverley back at practice for the
first time since November. He's expected to be ready to
play right after the break. Lebron James forty two, seventeen
and eight last night. Oh yeah, he's forty years of age.
Lakers win their tenth in the last twelve games, taking
out the Warriors one twenty to one to twelve. Neither
(01:06):
Luca nor Jimmy Butler played for their new teams. We
had to talk about that as well. Before seven o'clock tonight,
step had thirty seven in the loss. First time in
history two players thirty six years of asia older put
up thirty five or more in the same game. And
Lebron becomes the youngest player ever to score forty in
the game and the oldest player ever to go to
(01:30):
score forty in a game. And how about some great news.
Nate Robinson, who has battled the kidney disease for the
last eighteen years, has found a match and he will
undergo a kidney transplant reason. So that is some good
news right there as we roll into the five o'clock hour,
our thanks to Mike Holmgrin for joining us here at
(01:50):
the five twenty bar and Grill, let's get into that
MVP talk a little bit here, Jackson, because you've got
the same fifty vote voters that vote for the first
Team All Pro from the Associate Press that vote for
the AP MVP Award, and they those fifty voters decided
(02:10):
one player should win the first Team All Pro at
quarterbacks and a different person should win the MVP awards.
So I'm wondering if, I mean, is this kind of
a lifetime Almost almost they got together and said, all right,
Lamar Jackson's the best quarterback this year, but dude, Josh
Allen deserves an MVP and Lamar Jackson's already got a couple,
(02:32):
so let's give the MVP.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Like, was there a collusion involved here? What do you
think happened?
Speaker 5 (02:37):
I think the MVP is a narrative award, and I
don't say that to take anything away from Josh Allen.
I think that whichever one of them didn't get the
MVP this year would have a case for the best
season a quarterback has ever had without winning MVP. I mean,
either of these guys are winning ninety percent of the
(02:58):
MVP awards that have ever been given out with the
seasons that they had. I do think it's funny, man,
and this was very rare. I think it's maybe only
the second time since they started doing All Pro teams
that there was a different first Team All Pro than
there was the MVP. The tricky part is there's a
(03:20):
very sticky word in the middle of most Valuable Player,
and it is extremely subjective. If this was an award
given out to the player who had the best season,
I think you have a very different conversation. But we
get hung up on value because that means different things
to different people. And what I think is so interesting
about MVP debates is it reveals what we prioritize as fans,
(03:45):
because there is a very compelling MVP story you can
tell for Josh Allen and a very compelling MVP story
that you can tell for Lamar Jackson. I think where
we do ourselves a disservice is instead of saying how
great each of these players are, we start penalizing them
for who's on their team or what might have gone
(04:06):
their way versus what didn't. And it's because we use
the word value that that comes into the equation.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Well, is that why Saquon then won the Offensive Player
of the Year, because that, to me is your definition
of like most outstanding player? Like the NCAA tournament has
the most outstanding players, So was Saquon more outstanding at
his position than either Josh or Lamar were at their positions.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
Yes, but I think that if you go out and
I'm not look, I'm exaggerating to make a point here,
if you go out and have the best long snapping
season in the history of the NFL, you are not
going to be more valuable than a non long snapper.
There is just a giant gap between quarterback and running back.
That being said, the Eagles are who the Eagles are
(04:55):
in very large part because we just saw a top
five running back season ever from Won Barkley.
Speaker 6 (05:01):
But let's be real.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
Offensive Player of the Year award is who is the
best non quarterback. That's who they give it to. Because
if that player, it's never the MVP.
Speaker 6 (05:12):
It should just be the MVP. He's your MVP.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
If you're gonna say that they're the best offensive player,
it should be the same guy.
Speaker 6 (05:18):
Ninety five percent of the time. It's never the same guy.
It is a.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
Completely different award. It's the also Ran Award for non quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Exactly exactly right.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
And you know, I don't have a problem when somebody
gets an MVP award that deserves one based upon his work.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
For his entire career.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
I didn't realize these numbers, but Josh Allen, who had
never won an MVP award until yesterday, was the first
ever player with five straight seasons with forty touchdown passes.
He has the most wins, the most touchdowns, and the
most total yards ever in the first seven years of
his career. I mean, that's more than Tom Brady, That's
more than Patrick Mahomes, That's more than Joe Montana. So
(05:59):
I mean, and Andy had an unbelievable year, so especially
up against the guy that has already won an MVP too, right,
and Lamar Jackson already won two.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
So I don't have a problem with it.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
I think maybe some people would, and I could understand
their position of saying, Okay, we'll be saying, no, Lamar
had a better season than Josh if if they believe that,
and and do you think that there was a gap,
a big gap between Lamar and Josh are a very
strong gap, and no, could you make the argument that
Josh Allen had a better season than Lamar Jackson?
Speaker 5 (06:31):
Yeah, I think you can. And I think you lean
on essentially the market share for offensive success that Josh
Allen was responsible for. And I think that's the point
that a lot of people are trying to make but
miss when they say, well, Lamar was only this good
because he had Derrick Henry, Like, no question, having Derrick
Henry in your backfield running.
Speaker 6 (06:52):
That Todd Monkin offense right opens up opportunities.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Well, Lamar already won two without Dereck Henry in twenty nineteen.
Speaker 5 (06:59):
He had every bit as good as seasons statistically, maybe
better without all of that. Right, the Lamar Jackson had
a better season than Josh Allen this year in my opinion.
He had more yards, more touchdowns, fewer turnovers. He passed
for more yards, he ran for more yards.
Speaker 6 (07:15):
He only lost one. People say, well, the Bills won
more games.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
Well, if that's who the award is for, then give
it to Patrick Mahomes or Jared Goth. Neither of them
had MVP seasons. They won more games, right, And so
I think Lamar Jackson should have been the MVP this year,
But I think Josh Allen should have been it last year.
Speaker 6 (07:36):
So the fact that they.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
Got the East got one last two years feels like justice,
not the order I would have given them in you know, we.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Were talking to coach about these rosters for the.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Game, and I'm wondering I would agree that Philadelphia's rosters better.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
But in kind of breaking down these players, like I'm
trying to come up with like my top twenty players
in these games, and I kind of like I kind
of organized him by like elites, greats, and you get
your very very.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Goods and then you got your goods.
Speaker 6 (08:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
And to me, if you take the top twenty players,
I think it might be like eleven nine Philadelphia and
not like twelve eight or thirteen seven. I mean, if
you got I mean your elites. Is there anybody that
I'm missing? I mean Mahomes, Sakwon, Chris Jones.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
Elites.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
I wouldn't call Kelsey elite anymore, but I'd put him
in the next category with like AJ Brown, Jalen Carter.
You can you can argue which level these guys going.
Then the next group you got like my lotta Lane
Johnson for Philly, but you've got three offensive linemen for
Kansas City. You got Smith, you got Tooney, you got
Humphrey for Kansas City. Then you look at the next
(08:52):
level down you got Jalen Hurts. People would argue, maybe
he belongs to be higher.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
I'm not. I haven't seen enough from Jalen Hurts. Throwing
the football to put.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Him any higher than that at Bond DeVonta Smith for Philly, McDuffie,
Karloptis for Kansas City, and then you know, get the
level below that, you got some of those secondary guys
like Mitchell and Watson and Reed. And I guess I'm
seeing players from both sides and multiple players from both
sides at each one of these levels. So I guess
(09:19):
I don't know how much of a difference there is
between the Philly roster and the Kansas.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
City last year.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
Yeah, and I generally agree with you know how you
broke those down into tiers. I would certainly be higher
on Hurts, I would be higher on McDuffie.
Speaker 6 (09:32):
I'd probably throw Nick.
Speaker 5 (09:33):
Bolton in there, Okay, But I mean, yes, you you
are hitting on it.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
For me.
Speaker 6 (09:39):
It is when I say that I think Philadelphia has
a much better roster than the Chiefs.
Speaker 5 (09:46):
I think once you get past those top twenty guys,
it's a lot of green for a while. I mean,
Philadelphia's defense especially, can just keep bringing wave after wave
after wave of above average talent. It is relentless, and
I don't think there is anywhere where the Chiefs can
(10:07):
match the the I think the Eagles have a advantage
in the front seven at depth that Kansas City can't
match anywhere else.
Speaker 6 (10:18):
And I think that's where this game is going.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
To be wanting. You're laying You're laying in Philly.
Speaker 6 (10:22):
Huh, Yeah, I don't know if I'm supposed to keep
that in my.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Pocket till later the pocket let's talk about it.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Yeah, you're laying in Philly, I am easy.
Speaker 6 (10:30):
Nope.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
How does Philly then make the plays in the fourth
quarter that they need to make and prevent Kansas City
from making the plays in the fourth quarter, which we
know they will make.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
They will. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
You know.
Speaker 5 (10:44):
One of the things that makes Kansas City so incredible
down the stretch all these games is they're like a
return serve tennis player.
Speaker 6 (10:53):
They're just going to keep hitting the ball back.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
Over the net until you mess upright, And they create
these in the fourth quarter that force other teams to
be more one dimensional in order to try and hurry
up and score. And sometimes they can do it and
sometimes they can't. But you're increasing the probability that you're
gonna mess up when you make the other team do that.
Philadelphia does not have to do that. I will be
(11:17):
very surprised if in order for the Eagles to win,
Jalen Hurts needs to throw fifteen passes in the fourth quarter.
I don't think they're going to have to. I think
Philadelphia will be able to more or less dictate terms
the way that they want to, and they will be
trading punches back and forth. But at no point do
I see this being Jalen Hurts has to go out
(11:38):
there and you have a Kurt.
Speaker 6 (11:41):
Warner super Bowl in order to win.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
I think we're seeing some trends with Kansas City that
mirror a little bit of what we saw with the
Patriots and Tom brad Remember, like every Tom Brady Bill
Belichick's Super Bowl, they were like scoreless after the first quarter.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Yep, We're had three points after the first quarter. Like
they were always.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Starting slow, and that city hasn't started as slow, but
still they.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Take time to ramp up.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Kansas City definitely takes time to ramp up, and I
kind of see that happening in this game.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
I kind of see it like a low.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Scoring you know, take your field goal when you can
get it, Punt the ball away, no big deal, it's
just the beginning of.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
The second quarter.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
I kind of see that long, feeling out process and
then to your point of Philadelphia kind of.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
Get rolling a little bit.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Philadelphia's got a
ten point lead middle of the third, end of the third,
and which I think, honestly would be the most intriguing
possible because if it's close in the third, you're like,
can't see to pull it out. If Kansaity is ahead,
you're like, oh, kan Say is definitely gonna pull it out.
(12:50):
But if they're down two scores, then you're like, oh,
this is gonna be good.
Speaker 5 (12:56):
If you were scripting it for a movie, that is
exactly how you would do it. Here is the most
nuanced reason that I think Philadelphia wins this game. I
think that we are going to see a super Bowl
record for fourth down conversion attempts. And it's going to
be because neither of these teams are ever in fourth
and long.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
That's right, that's right, and there's a penalty that would
be the only right situation, right.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
I don't think we're going to see a lot of
sacks in this game, and both teams have shown that
they are not only willing but extremely capable of going
for fourth downs all over the field and converting. It's
going to be a ton of fourths and twos, fourth
and threes, fourth and ones, and nobody is better than
that in the Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 6 (13:37):
And it's going to be the.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Team that performs best on fourth down that wins this game.
It'll be Philadelphia because their average down to distance on
fourth down is going to be shorter than Kansas City.
Speaker 6 (13:51):
That's just what it comes down to for me.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
I think that when we get to the end, though,
one team is going to be able to close it
up on one team's not gonna be able to close that.
I think Philadelphia is gonna get that opportunity. Like I said,
I think they'd be like a ten point layless stands
twenty to ten early fourth quarter, Kansas City scores a
touchdown there, you're like, oh, here they come.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
It's a three point game.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Philly can can basically close it out with a touchdown.
They can go up twenty seven to seventeen with three
or four minutes left, and I just feel like they
won't be able to get to the kill shot will
not go in. It'll either be oh we got it'll
I get I can see this like thirty yard line,
fourth and four, and you're like, do we go for
(14:37):
the kill shot on fourth and four? Or do we
kick the field goal to go up six knowing that
we're giving Patrick Mahomes the ball, and I don't know
what they'll do.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
They'll probably go for it in that situation.
Speaker 6 (14:47):
Then either way it's going to define Nick Sirianni's.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Career absolutely right, And I don't think they get it.
Either they kick the field goal and go up six,
or they don't make the fourth down and they're still
up three, and then you know what's going to happen.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
With three min it's left to go in the game.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Fifteen's gonna go down and he's gonna do what he
needs to do to win.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
I'm gonna say something that a lot of people listening
are not gonna be happy about, but I do think
it supports your point. This game reminds me so much
of Super.
Speaker 6 (15:19):
Bowl forty nine.
Speaker 5 (15:21):
I see so much twenty fourteen yeat the Eagles in
the Sagals, and I see so much twenty fourteen Patriots.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
It's a great call.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
In this Chiefs team, and you're right, it could play
out just like that.
Speaker 5 (15:40):
I think that Philadelphia is going to be able to
stay in their lane throughout this game, and I think
if both teams stay in their lane, Philadelphia is better.
Speaker 6 (15:52):
Now, look, if.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
I'm if I'm betting a scary amount of money on
this game, I probably flip.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
That's why I'm betting on the game.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
I'm not betting a scary amount.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
But but no matter what amount I'm bet it's scary,
too scary to me to vote against Patrick Mahomes Andy.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
Read Well, Because here's the thing, right, If if I
bet on Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid and I lose,
I tip my hat to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
If I bet against Patrick Mahomes, I lose, I'm gonna
feel like I'm moron it.
Speaker 6 (16:24):
That being said, Eagles.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
All right, all right, it's Ohgan, it is going to
be great. Andrews, have you given your call on this?
We got to bring you in here and give your
call on this game.
Speaker 6 (16:37):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 7 (16:38):
I this is one of the closest and least amount
of pulse I felt on a game in a long time,
for the Super Bowl especially, and I I kind of
am going into it with just an open mind where
I'm kind of rooting for the Chiefs emotionally just because
I like to see the greatness and uh, I think
they're a super fun team to watch, and because you know,
I'm close to coach Holmegan and I'm root for Andy
(16:59):
Reid for him as well. But I definitely wouldn't mind
seeing the Eagles win. But I if there's not enough
twift pushes, i'd be happier about that for sure. That
that definitely ticks me off a little bit. When I
see that like three or four, five, six, seven times
a game, It's like, all right, come on, guys. But
I think I think you're right.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
It's you can't.
Speaker 7 (17:18):
It's the kind of the cliche you can't bet against Mahomes.
At some point they're gonna they're gonna lose.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
Though.
Speaker 7 (17:23):
At some point they're gonna lose one of these and
it might be this game. Because you mentioned about the
tennis player of returning serve, I think I think the
Eagles are the one team that won't make that mistake.
They're the they play at Brandon Football that won't make
the mistake, and the Chiefs will keep asking them to
make the mistake, but the Eagles won't make that mistake.
(17:44):
So I this is the scariest matchup I think for
this Chiefs team in a long time.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
We got fun with audio coming up with five forty five.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
But in the next segment, I'm gonna read this tweet
by Jackson Bevins verbatim. He says, I'm gonna be on ninth, ninth,
ninety three three hr today from three to six, co
hosting with Dick Faane. We're actually going longer than six,
by the way, just so you know, we wait for
the track track I'm charging the overtime he's He says,
we're talking home grind, Hall of Fame, slub with the Man,
snub with a man himself, super Bowl analysis and predictions.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
So we check check check those boxes off.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
NBA's wild Trade deadline which we have not checked the
box off yet, NFL MVP, which we have, and this
one the Mariners take that has been boiling in my
gut for weeks that I'm interested.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
In hearing next on ninety three point three KJR Outbound.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
If you're listening to your one and only home for
the super Bowl super Bowl, make us your number one
pre set in your car and on the new iHeartRadio app.
Now back to Sufty and Dick brought to you Buddy
Emeral Queen Casino on Sports Radio ninety three point tri
Super Bowl k j R.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Fam, Welcome back to the five to twenty bar and
grill tick Fane Jackson Bevin Softian Dick without the soft one.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
Andrews Hurst back.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
In the comforts of six forty five Elliott Avenue West.
Speaker 7 (19:17):
Is it comfortable if I don't have a drink in
my hand like you guys do?
Speaker 3 (19:19):
Oh? I don't. Actually I don't which I should? I
should change that? I guess.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
I guess if you count this, uh, you know, half
drunk two hour old diet coke with a lime on,
it is as a drink. Yeah, that's I've kind of
just been milking this for for a while. But h
Andrews giving give give our friend Jackson a little Jerry
d will you from this past?
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Yeah? I meant to play that coming out right.
Speaker 8 (19:43):
There is the reality of our offense and then the
perception of our offense. And you know, our offense. We
we play in a tough ballpark to hit it. Our
offense has generally been above average based on a dance
metric WRC plus things like that for a number of years.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
Now, Well, that was one of a number of things
that Jerry says, and you know it's his it's Jerry's
annual open his mouth and have the fans make fun
of what he has to say press conference, which is
you know last year was fifty four percent. This year's
money quote was that one's there's the perception of our
(20:25):
opits and.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
The reality of our opense.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
And you said, you've had something boiling in you for
a week, So I want to give you this opportunity
to get it off your chest because he needed to
go into the weekend super Bowl weekend with nothing on
your chest.
Speaker 6 (20:38):
Thank you. I need to feel unburdened. I appreciate the opportunity.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
See, here's the thing is, this is the time of
year where for forty one years, I've been excited about
baseball team. Even when the Mariners have stunk, it was
exciting because Baseball's coming. And this is the first I
haven't felt that and it's been killing me trying to figure.
Speaker 6 (21:02):
Out why that is.
Speaker 5 (21:05):
Because this is the most likable group of players that
the Mariners have had in twenty years. Julio Rodriguez is
a super nova in waiting.
Speaker 6 (21:18):
You've got the best pitching staff.
Speaker 5 (21:20):
We've ever seen in this city and one of the
best that Major League Baseball has seen in a long time.
You've got Cal Raleigh winning the Platinum Glove at catcher
and hitting more home runs than any catcher in the
Major leagues. Like that's insane, that never ever happens, and
yet here we are, and Jerry, here's I will preface
(21:43):
this by saying, I do believe that Depoto is a
mouthpiece for ownership, and that is a huge part of
his job description.
Speaker 6 (21:54):
And I would not be.
Speaker 5 (21:55):
Surprised if he truly believed after twenty twenty two that
the purse strings were going to loosen up and he
would finally get to start throwing some big punches with
the big boys. And so he has to then say, well, actually.
Speaker 6 (22:10):
No, we can't. And here's why. And it's not because
my boss is cheap.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
You can't say that, right, But you want to talk
about the perception of your offense and the reality of
your offense. Here is the reality of your offense. Jerry
Depoto second last in batting average, bottom third, and on
base percentage and slugging percentage and ops you led the
(22:34):
major leagues and strikeouts that has nothing to do with
how difficult to hit your ballpark is. That's just not
putting the bat on the ball. That is wasting start
after start after start that range from quality to dominant.
And yes, winning ninety games is an accomplishment and straight
(22:59):
years and that's good, but at no point did it
feel like they were ever running out a lineup that
could win playoff series, that could threaten to get this
team to a World Series for the first time. And
damn it, if you're the only team in Major League
Baseball to have never been to a World Series, you
(23:21):
need to be killing yourselves to rid yourself of that shame.
And it is so frustrating for me as a fan
who have given so much time, attention, and money to
this franchise for four decades, to all of a sudden
feel like this is the team I should be stoked about. Ye,
(23:44):
And I don't want to give you my money. I
don't want to give you my time and my effort,
and that's not fair to these players.
Speaker 6 (23:51):
But I hate feeding what.
Speaker 5 (23:52):
Feels like ownership that is talking out of both sides
of their mouth when you are stacking up top five
in operational income year over year over year. This franchise
is making money, they are not spending it commensurate with
the way that it's coming in. And I'm really, really
(24:15):
tired of it. I feel caught in the middle.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
I hear you, I feel you.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
I do think that the goalposts have been moved on
Jerry Depoto by ownership.
Speaker 5 (24:24):
And this isn't a Jerry criticism. I want to be
clear on that. I think he's in a very difficult spot.
This is an ownership criticism.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
I have always been and I was probably the last
one off the ownership ship on the radio station because
I stayed I wanted to use past performance as a.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
Predictor of the future.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
And what I always went back to was, Hey, Stanton
took over this club twenty sixteen, his payroll was eleventh
in baseball. It was thirteenth the next year. It was
eighth in twenty eighteen, it was eleventh in twenty nineteen,
and that was the year that they won like sixty
(25:08):
five games, and Jerry said, this ain't working.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
We're gonna blow the ship up.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Sure, And so I was always like, Okay, I get it.
If you're gonna blow the ship up, then why have payroll?
Speaker 3 (25:20):
Right?
Speaker 2 (25:20):
I mean that's that's just a that's a no brainer.
That's a that's an NFL, major League Baseball, that's just
a sports thing. If you're gonna blow the thing up,
why have any payroll? And with the belief that Okay,
well they spent when they were trying back in the
mid teens, h they're gonna spend again. And with there's
even a cut from Jerry to Podo, like in twenty
(25:41):
twenty or maybe twenty twenty one, where he was like, Hey,
we've built this, We're gonna be ready to spend in
the near future. Just be patient, patient, And I think
they moved the goalposts on him because of the.
Speaker 6 (25:53):
Whole root of the backle Yeah, signed.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
And all yes, and all of a sudden they're seeing
what their bottom line was projected to be and now
what their bottom line actually is going to be, and
they're like, uh, sorry, Jerry, you know, we thought we
were gonna have this money to spend.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
Now.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
That's the root of the problem though, because you're exactly
right in what you're saying in that now is the
time when the iron is hot to strike. Yeah, you
have built, you have torn it down. And Jerry, to
be honest, has at least seventy five ish percent built
(26:31):
it back up a complete pitching staff. Now, the bullpen
was injured last year, and I think that was probably
the big reason why it.
Speaker 3 (26:38):
Wasn't as good as what it could have been.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
A couple of bats in the middle of the lineup
that he created through the draft, and you got to
give him credit for that, But then he hasn't filled
out the rest of the offense. And that's exactly the
time when you go to free agency and say, all right,
I've built seventy five percent of a baseball team on
(27:01):
my own on the cheat h we gotta go get
the last twenty five percent. And they have been unwilling
to do that. And now with this whole yeah, really
our offense is really good. Just look at the you know,
OPS plus and the offensive.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
War and this and that and all these.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
No, you don't put bat on ball and you don't
score runs, So don't give me the whole advanced metrics
will We're top of the top half in baseball and off.
Speaker 5 (27:28):
I completely agree with you, And again I think I
think Jerry did a phenomenal job building this farm system.
He deserves all the credit in the world from taking
them from lousy year after year to arguably the best
farm system in the major leagues over the last three
four years, and we're seeing those guys make it to
the major leagues and perform.
Speaker 6 (27:49):
That's awesome, but you're right.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
You're not going to truly compete in modern Major league
baseball doing that. And you want to talk about advanced stats,
I'm I'm all about it. Let's just let's use a
simple one ope yes on base percentage plus slugging, a
really nice.
Speaker 6 (28:08):
Umbrella metric for how your team is performing. See it.
Speaker 5 (28:12):
The Mariners were six eighty seven last year, So for context,
here are the players that were around six eighty seven
in the major leagues last year. This is who Seattle
is in essence running out one through nine. Bryson Stott,
(28:32):
Ty France, Bryce Terrang Sedany, Rafaela salth Frielich, Jacob Young,
Andres Jimenez.
Speaker 6 (28:45):
This is that's my point.
Speaker 5 (28:49):
That is who you're backing up this all time rotation
is this guy here is dead.
Speaker 7 (28:55):
Guys, if you need to supplement this roster and you
have not been given the money to spend in free agency,
there's other ways to do that. And I think that's
where Jerry Depoto does come into the light and where.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
He needs to be better.
Speaker 7 (29:06):
You need to make You need to trade from your
top best farm system in baseball. And there's six teams
who had a lower payroll than you that went to
the playoffs last year. That's on Jerry Depoto. We need
better from the President of Baseball Operations.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
And I'm fine trading.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
I've been fined trading Luis Castillo since the first rumor
came out. Trade Louis Castillo because I think he's a
declining I think he's a declining pitcher. I think the
gap between what Luis Castillo is going to be this
year not what he has been the last three or
four years, because you can't count that. You got to
project forward and what he is going to be this
year versus what an Emerson Hancock with another year old
(29:43):
or another year better.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
He wouldn't be Louis Castillo.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
But what you could potentially get as a bat for
Luis Castillo I think would help your team. I know
it's Robert Peter to pay Paul, but that's I mean,
that's what we're that's a situation.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
We're in right now.
Speaker 5 (29:57):
I I Luis Castilla is my face to the starting pitchers,
just I love how he pitches.
Speaker 6 (30:02):
But you're right, the clock is ticking on how much
longer he's considered a premium.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
Yes, you can get for him right now.
Speaker 5 (30:11):
To your point, which I think is the best one
that either of us made so far, is the delta
between him and Emerson Hancock is smaller than the delta
between whatever hitter you're bringing in and whatever hitter you're replacing.
Speaker 6 (30:25):
It's a massive difference.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
So your net even if you're trading talent for talent,
the way that your roster and farm system is constructed,
you are going to see a bigger increase with that
bat than you do by having the extra pitch.
Speaker 7 (30:39):
But you don't even have to trade from your current
team that you're trying to win with. Now you can
trade with your young guys where you have four middle
infielders in your top five of your prospects that you're
never gonna play at the same time, that will probably
give you a bigger return than Luis Castillo because of
the money he's making.
Speaker 2 (30:54):
As long as you can find a team that says,
you know what we're gonna you know we're gonna sew
we know we're gonna suck. And there's not a lot
of those teams out there because you know, with the
expanded playoffs and everything, you know, and you see teams
like Baltimore come out of nowhere and make the playoffs,
they're like, you see it seems like Arizona come out.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
Of nowhere and to make the playoffs. They're like, hey,
we could. We're not gonna trade anybody till July because
we think we're gonna be in this.
Speaker 7 (31:16):
So the Baltimore made the playoffs because they traded for
corbyn Burns by trading from their farm system and getting
one year out of corbyn Burns. That's why they made
the playoffs last year.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Fun with Audio right around the corner on ninety three
point three kJ RFM.
Speaker 6 (31:34):
It's now time for some day in Dick's Fun with Audio.
Jimmy g pawn Star, Jimmy mister Garoppolo.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
Now let's have some fun with.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Audio usually three forty five, and we move it too
five forty five today because a last sterling was joining us.
Our handicapper. All right, Jackson, I don't know if you
remember the rules of this. It's very Similar're not gonna
use the huge drop you're gonna just say, what's that?
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Dick? All right, So I'm gonna say, hey, Jackson, did
you hear that?
Speaker 6 (32:00):
What's that?
Speaker 3 (32:01):
There? You go after the Lakers, See, I can teach
this guy anything.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
After the Lakers made their second big trade of the
deadline to acquire Mark Williams, the general consensus was that
the Lakers are now contenders, but not.
Speaker 4 (32:12):
According to Chuck, the Males don't have a chance to
win a championship this year. The Lakers don't have a
chance to win a championship this year. The MAVs do.
I still okay?
Speaker 6 (32:25):
See is the team to be?
Speaker 4 (32:27):
I don't think the Lakers are better than the MAVs.
I'm not sure they're better than Memphis. I'm not sure
they're better than the Rockets. But this trade, in my opinion,
were all just conjectured.
Speaker 6 (32:40):
So even after adding Luca, you don't think they're better
than those teams. I do not. You still think they're
five right now?
Speaker 3 (32:45):
You're gonna they're gonna stay five, or they're gonna.
Speaker 4 (32:47):
They're gonna stay five right because number one, they're not
gonna be good defensively. Listen, you just can't put great
players together and think it's going to work.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Let's talk in length about it and then beginning in
the next segment, But just your general thoughts on what
Chuck said there, Jackson.
Speaker 5 (33:08):
Yeah, I guess it comes down to your definition of contender.
Like the Lakers are absolutely good enough to make it
to the Western Conference Finals.
Speaker 6 (33:17):
I think the gap between them and the.
Speaker 5 (33:20):
Best three teams in the NBA, which are very clear
three at this point, is still pretty big. And while
Luka Doncic is better than Anthony Davis, Anthony Davis was
playing defensive Player of the Year quality basketball for a
team that doesn't defend well. So yeah, I mean Chuck
is right in that I don't think they're real contenders
(33:42):
to win an NBA title this year, but they are
contenders for a playoff up.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
Hey, Jackson, do you hear that?
Speaker 6 (33:48):
What's that?
Speaker 2 (33:49):
Days before the twenty seventeen NFL Draft, so eight years ago,
then Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes visited ESPN Headquarters taped
on his podcast and was asked about the idea of
potentially playing in Kansas City.
Speaker 6 (34:06):
The Kansas City Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
When you visited them, what stood out about them?
Speaker 9 (34:09):
Definitely a coach read and just what he's done, especially
with Donald mcnabbing guys that have been been great quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
What kind of guy was he?
Speaker 9 (34:17):
He was an awesome guy. He's the guy was funny
that same time was serious and uh he got his
point across, but you still enjoyed the time with him.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
He's very well liked amongst his players. If you wind
up going to Kansas City, you'll be a happy guy.
What would constitute a successful NFL career for you, Patrick?
Speaker 9 (34:30):
Successful? If a career for me, you'd have to be
winning the Super Bowl. That I put up a ton
of stats of Texas Tech and Del Sol, but I
always won a big twelve championships. So for me, winning
the Super Bowl would be as a starting quarterback, would
be this successful.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
Check check and check. That's pretty cool. I interviewed with
Adam Schefter eight years ago.
Speaker 2 (34:47):
Hey, if you had no idea that Kansas City was
gonna I mean Kansas City was.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
They weren't even in a position really to draft Patrick Bollos.
I mean they had to trade way up.
Speaker 5 (34:57):
To gain Yeah, they were coming off I believe a
twelve win season with Alex Smith eleven and five.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
I think they were.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Yeah, they were good and they had to tradeway up
and it Uh yeah, I think it's worked out.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Okay, Hey Jack, didn't you hear that?
Speaker 2 (35:10):
At the NFL Awards show last night, which none of
us got to see on television? Uh Snoop Dog was
reminiscing about how long he's been a football fan, including
a joke about a certain former NFL head coach's significant other.
Speaker 10 (35:24):
Because I've been a football fan for a long long time.
I mean, I remember back when the Cowboys was good,
I remember back when the Chiefs was bad, and I
remember where was it?
Speaker 3 (35:40):
Bill Belichick's girlfriend wasn't even born yet. She stole the
show last night.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
Yeah, if you saw on Instagram, because I don't think
any of almost none of us watched it live because
I don't think it wasn't available except if you were
anders illegally streaming.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
What's the only time it was available? Hey Jack? Did
you hear that?
Speaker 6 (36:05):
What's that?
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Dick?
Speaker 2 (36:06):
On The Upp and Adams Show with Ky Adams, JSN
and Devin Witherspoon answered the question on the quality they
like most about Geno.
Speaker 11 (36:16):
What is each of your favorite thing about Geno?
Speaker 3 (36:19):
Smith?
Speaker 11 (36:19):
Like one quality kind of like what I'm saying, He
never let nothing waiver him like or move him off
his path like regardless if anything have me. I mean,
that's just a game of football. He always moves on
to the next plage. So like his perseverence was like,
it's wonderful. Kind I think what you said was perfect.
Speaker 12 (36:37):
I mean he's just toughest neils and you know he's
been through a lot, so you know, like Spoon said,
you know, he doesn't get up, doesn't get down, and
he's just able for me. He's a great source for
me to just you know, ask any questions and you know,
I know he's going to be there for me, and
you know, I know he wants the best for me
and a lot of players in that locker room. So
(36:58):
it's great to have a leader. And it got thing
like that.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
I do think there's a team chemistry element that is
important about keeping Gino. And you know, I've been I
think way more like a general manager and a you know,
the money guy of a team, yeah, than I do
about the coach of a team.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
Usually when we're talking about transactions.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
So when I say things like hey, Justin Fields at
five million dollars or Gino at forty four and a
half kirk Cousins at one million dollars, having Atlanta pay
the rest Gino at forty four and a half those
things excite me, you know, more than paying Gino Smith
forty four and a half million dollars.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
But these two.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
Guys aren't alone in how they feel about Geno Smith,
and I think there there would be a lot of
what the hell, man, if the Seahawks were to just
say Gino, you're done, we're taking the dead cap hit,
we're saving thirty million dollars, and we're gonna go at
Justin Fields or kirk Cousins.
Speaker 5 (37:59):
Yeah, you're not trading stocks. These are human beings, and
not just regular human beings. They're human beings who have
been killing themselves to be in the top point one
percent of what they do, and they understand what it
means not only to be in that locker room, but
to be in an NFL locker room and have someone
(38:22):
that you look to who is a leader, not just
because they're the quarterback, but because they do all the
leadership stuff too. And that there aren't thirty two of
those guys in the NFL, there might not be fifteen
of those guys who are as good a quarterback as
you know Smith is and who are as good of
(38:42):
a leader as he is?
Speaker 2 (38:44):
