hey was there a game last weekend? Did they win?
Is there a big game this this weekend? Like we're
talking like there's a buy this Saturday for crying out
a lot. These guys are already bitching over who's gonna
drive to pit to the penn Stone, two and a
half hours from Pittsburgh on Friday. We're going out there
courtesy a venue Kings and Delta Airlines. So a lot
(02:21):
to get to with the game coming up this weekend.
But first let's go back and talk about, guys, what
we saw Saturday at Husky Stadium, the game that will
be forever known as the final game Miller Moss ever
played as the quarterback of USC. I gotta tell you, man,
if they would have given the Batto Woody marks thirty
times in that game, I think USC wins the game
on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
I don't know why they went away from you know,
they made some adjustments to start the second half, which
is what you expect a team to do. Go in
and have time, see what's working, what's not, make some adjustments,
and they did just that, and they came out and
bang bang fourteen straight points and both those drives.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
I think there was all.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Total like seventeen runs those two series, something like that,
and eight out of ten on one particular series, and
they were able to get the ball to the end zone.
But inexplicably, at some point, you know, when they could
have scored another touchdown, they decided to throw the ball.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Said that which led to us.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Getting a big signature stop in that game that led
to the win. I just think, yes, USC did a
poor job of sticking with what was working to start
the second half. But I do believe that the Huskies defense,
other than about you know this two and a half drives,
really played an excellent football game. They shut down Miller
Moss as a passer, you know, I know USC had

a lot of high hopes for him, and outside of
those in the second half, where I figure, again, this
is our depth and lack thereof showing its ugly head
where they were able to pound the ball and run
the ball against us, where we couldn't get stops and
run eight out of ten and get all the way
down to the three yard line. Defense played well, outside
of it just feels like softy. We just don't have

enough depth to play sixty minutes of smash mouth football
up front because our defensive line is just not at
that depth level of strength right now.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah, and I think a lot of us were kind
of afraid of that in the second half that here
we go again with the same story Indiana and Iowa.
Yet then they make the big goal line stay in
with Kamari House making, let's face it, man, the play
of the year defensively, and that's a freshman linebacker shooting
the gap to make that play. There's two defensive plays
actually three of them, but the two that I would
look to in the last year and a half for

Elijah Jackson against Texas and that game versus USC.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Maybe z Ion stripsack.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
As well versus the Trojans last year in LA But Mario,
that's a pure freshman linebacker who just showed up in
January out of high school. Who's making that play on
that running back? Yeah, I called that fresh legs. He
came in there ready to make a play. But I'm
not sure if it's one of the biggest plays because
we had a few defensive plays in this game that

led to that. I think coach Riley came in this
game and I talked about a pregame like he was
trying to be cute and he was going to pass
the no matter what when it's been shown that you
could run on our defense. He passed the ball the
entire first half and his quarterback Moss, wasn't doing great.
He came out in the second half and did what
everybody else has been doing IOWA for recent games. But
(05:15):
running the ball against US was great.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
They in the second half, they came out running the ball,
and those first two drives scored on.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Us real easy.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
And the third drive, they ran the ball eight times
in a row, passed it that one time on second down,
and that cost him because we finished them in third
and fourth and the only reason in the last drive
they had a minute and a half so they had
to pass the ball. But what I seen on our
team is our defense was great. Our pass defense I
thought maybe might not be as great because we haven't

had too many passing teams against us, but we proved
that we are a great pass defense team. And Greg
keeps talking about it, but he's absolutely right. In the
second half, that might be depth that were coming out
and people were gashing us up the tire field. But
our defense is great and our offense made enough plays
to win the game.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Well, we mentioned this in the pregame show, that you're
going to end the year with three or four games
against three of the top thirty passing offenses in college football, USC,
Penn State, Oregon. Did they just pass test number one
on Saturday?
Speaker 6 (06:12):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Absolutely.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
I think that, you know, we were kind of in
a wait and see mode of how good these guys
really are. But I think you know, Price SEC and
the rest of the DBS proved that they're really a
good unit back there. I think at the beginning of
the season, I don't know if it was you or
Mario felt like the DBS were our best unit, and
I was like, no, I think it's not linebackers, right.
(06:34):
I think you know, with Dixon and Price SEC and
all those guys. Yeah, Mikhil Esteen and Cam fab great
solid unit, but our linebackers are experienced. They played hundreds
of games for the University of Washington, were all six
and seven year players and all that kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
And yes, they had a good game as well. They
played solid.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
You talked about the freshman camari House who chased away
an upper classman and made him decide to Ridchert because
he's so good that the guy decided to rid shirt.
But the secondary has been as advertised. I mean, they've
played extremely well. They're really good and tight mand and
man coverage. You know, I think to me, at least
I see them put in a lot of situations where

they got to play man to man defense and they're
passing that test. They don't play a ton of zone,
but when they're in Mandon man. These guys do a
great job in that Mando man coverage, and that's what
you want to see your corners do.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah. Well, I tell you what.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
When you said there was a player that left because
of Kamari House, I swear to god I forgot the
guy's name as Brian parkm.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah. Remember earlier in the year quit just quit the.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Main people who kid on us. Ye, So I just
said a guy. I had to look him up because
I had forgotten the saying. Penn State is now forty
third in the country, by the way in passing offense,
and that may have dropped after the Ohio State game. Oregon,
by the way, is still number eleven. So you're gonna
face you know them and Penn State in the final
two games of the year. Two are the top you know,
(07:53):
forty five teams in college football. I just wonder, though, physically,
are they ready for a game like this on Saturday?
Because if you're James Franklin and you saw the way
USC ran the ball down their throats this last weekend,
why would you not try and rip that off and
start the game on Saturday like that?
Speaker 5 (08:09):
You would think that they would start the game off.
But we thought coach Riley and USC was started off
like that. I think sometimes offensive coordinators love their game
plan and they love what they think they do well,
and they're going to force it on you. It's just
like a defense that says, no matter what you do,
we're going to run this defense. But if you look
at the second half of what they just did against
us USC, then you would think Penn State's going to
(08:31):
come out like that. But we're not one hundred percent sure.
Our defensive backs have been playing great, and Greg talked
about it. When they're in man, they're getting beat a
few times, but they're always right there to make a play.
And in the past few years we've had a few
dbs that were never there to make the play, and
we're always trailing. Our defensive backs are playing man to
man right in your face with these receivers.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Well, let's face it, they're not even in that position
without that illegal substitution call in the fourth quarter where
you go from third to one to third and seven
and you got to throw the ball and you lose
a yard to Jyles Jackson and you can just feel it,
you could hear it in the stadium. Are you kidding me?
If they lose this game. Because of that, the narrative
on Saturday's game and our reaction right now, Greg is
(09:13):
totally different than the tone you're hearing right now.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Well, you had to go there.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
I think we all are aware that that's an issue
that the coaches have to take. First, take accountability for
at which they did. Yeah, and secondly, it just can't
freaking happen. You cannot come out of a timeout where
you've talked to your team about here's exact, we need
one yard to finish this game. So this is exactly
what we want to do. We want to do this,
(09:39):
We want this personnel in, we want this execution to happen.
I mean, you're let's go and then to break that
with an extra guy in the huddle and then nobody
notice it so that you can call it time out,
because you can call it time out and alleviate getting
that penalty. So that's a huge miss. And yes, that
would be the narrative if somehow they were able to
score a touchdown. That's all we be taught talking about
(10:00):
right now, Oh horrible. So it's that whole you know,
penalties and that thing coming back. Now, it was earlier
in the year where I heard the coach talk about
the players are accountable for these penalties that we're having.
They got to stop doing them. They got to But
this one I think was more on the coaches than
it was on the players, and so now they got
to do a little self introspection and they can't ever
(10:21):
let that happen.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Yeah, Jed Jed said there was a player that thought
it was a certain formation. I think he mentioned it
was a three wide receiver set, or it was a
two wide receiver set that got that was a three
wide receiver set. I mean, look, obviously you want to
learn these lessons and wins and not in losses, but
they came so dangerously close to losing the game because
of it, it's almost hard just to ignore it even
(10:42):
though you won the game.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
One of the first things you do on offense is
is you identify your personnel groupings for the game, and
every game there could be some slight different, you know, variations,
but you call out like twelve which means one back
and two tight ends, or ten which means one back,
zero tight ends, and three wide receivers, or twenty one
two backs, one tight end. So that's usually the vernacular
(11:04):
language that we all learn. So how do you hear
differently if someone says eleven personnel, one back, one tight end,
two receivers, or twelve or ten or whatever. So it's
kind of hard to understand how a person it was
the wrong group, because that's the first you do that
before you call the play.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Some don't, don't.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Some teams hold up like big posters of celebrities like
here here's Bo Derek, right, here's that Rihanna and.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
That's but that's for the people who do that with
the coach. I don't know that before the bar. Yeah, Peterson,
coach Peterson.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
But I'm saying you still call the personnel groupings before,
and that's usually for the people who are currently on
the field.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
They see those.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
But when you're on a sideline, you'll say twelve, which
means one back, two tight ends.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Get in the game.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
You call that before you call the play. This is
the personnel first, then the play.
Speaker 5 (11:53):
It's almost impossible, almost impossible for twelve men to run
out there. Greg is absolutely right. You're calling the formation first.
That's the first thing you're doing. You're yelling out the
formation for the play. They were sitting over there for
a few minutes, So there should have been somebody looking.
It can't just be on coach fist. There has to
be somebody whoever's the offensive coordinated at the receivers coast
(12:15):
to the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Somebody has to know. Even a player has to know, like, look,
you're not in on this formation, so why are you
in the huddle?
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Well, you got a guy in Jordia Coleman.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
The good news is ran for twenty three times one
hundred and four yards, two touchdowns, twenty three carries is
a career high for him. By the way, He's been
dealing with some injuries and coaches kind of feel like
he's as healthy now as he's been the entire season.
So when you dub goes to Penn State, Greg and
Mario on Saturday, you're talking about the number seven total
defense in the country, the number fourteen rushing defense in America.
(12:46):
Can they do to USC's defense on the ground what
they just did to Penn State? Sorry, Mario, what they
just did to USC on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
I think we can do it on anybody.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
I think we passed the ball thirty nine times this
past game, and that's not really offense. I thought they
were intentional about getting combed the ball this game for
the first time, we didn't have We had Adam Muhammad
in on that fourth and one. He got the fourth
and one, but he only had another carry. Besides that,
we weren't rotating him as much. I thought they did
a concerted effort to make sure Jonah. I think Jonah
(13:17):
is such a playmaker and such a great running back
that if we're intentional about it, we can do something.
And then if we can't run it, then we're gonna
be like Greg says we are, We're just going to
be a play action team.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
Well, I think again, you continue to use your rotation
at running backs to a degree. You know, you want
your guy to be fresh the whole game. So nowadays
there's no such he as one guy who gets all
the carries. So there's gonna be some carries for Davidson
to be something Mohammad and you use them situations. What
are they good at. Davis is great coming out of
the backfield catching the ball. Muhammad is a stronger, lean guy.
(13:49):
You know, he has more size and length, so you
use him in your short yard of stuff, and then
Jonah Coleman is your primary guy. I don't think in
college football these days, there's a team that's so great
at one thing that you have to worry about it.
I believe the office would dictate what they do if
we come out we're a good running team and we're
(14:11):
balancing passing. I think that's why we can be successful
gets Penn State because they can't just load the box because.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
We throw the ball too will.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
I just kind of feel like it's got to be
led by the defense at this point, really, because they're
the group that has been showing up consistently.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
I think the most.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
I mean, the first drive of the game US he's
got the ball Mario at the fifty yard line, they
go nowhere. Second drive at the plus thirty seven, one
play pick by Carson brun Or, Third drive at the
forty and they end up missing a field goal. Second
to last drive, they get to the four yard line,
they walk away with zip. Last drive, second and four
from the fourteen, and they end up getting a big
play by Holtzklaw on fourth down, which was his first
(14:48):
snap of the game. By the way, you saw the
way he just whipped Mason Murphy, who is the right
tackle for USC, and took him down and got in
Miller Moss's face. So, I mean, Greg guy, you may
have said it earlier in the year about this defense
being better than last year's defense, and they're still lacking
the pass rush that last year's defense at I think, Mario,
but they've been pretty consistent all year long keeping you
(15:09):
in these games.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
That's the most impressive thing we can talk about is
we talk about those dbs, but we're not even getting
a pass rush. So think of how great they would
be if we had a pass rush. Our defense is
keeping us in the games. We talked about a pregame
last week about getting some turnovers. Those guys got three
interceptions from there. One was at the end of the half,
but there's still three interceptions and that helped our team
(15:32):
a great deal because if you look at Will Rogers' stats,
twenty three for thirty nine or twenty five for thirty
nine is not great, but our defense kept us in
the game.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Hundred and fourth and sacks in the country hundred and
fourth and sacks. Yet they are what we say in
total defense so far this year.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
They're top ten.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Yeah, they're number ten, and they're one hundred and fourth
in the country in sacks. Yet they are number ten
in the nation in total defense and they are number
two in the nation and passing yards per game. How
was that possible, well, have that week of a pass
rush but be ranked that high.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
Well, you know, I don't want to nick nit pick
too much ahead. Well, some of the things, you know,
our special teams has given the other team a lot
of short fields, and so the other teams aren't amassing
a ton of yards because sometimes they don't have to
go that far right because they've gotten the ball to
fifty yard line or thirty seven yard line. So that
plays into it. But overall, these guys have been The
(16:26):
linebackers have been really solid, the dbs have been spectacular,
and the defensive line has been okay in the first half.
It's just in the second half when they wear down
and guys have been injured here in the last three
games that they've kind of struggled. So I think, you know, overall,
our defense is playing well. They're playing well as a unit.
It's kind of like that no name defense or you know,
the defense without any stars. And if they did have
(16:48):
a pass rush, then maybe they wouldn't just be top ten,
maybe they'd be top two, top three, right, And if
they did have some kind of pass rush, So I
think these guys are doing the Yoma's job. If we
had a couple more defensive linemen, a couple guys hadn't
got hurt, I think you'd be seeing even better defense.

seventh in solo tackles. We've been watching a banged up

Carson Brunner for the last month and a half.

You just saw the healthy one Saturday.

Yeah, and for this kid to have those stats when
he's been playing kind of with one arm for half
of the games shows just how intense and hard working
and just steady.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
This kid is.

He may not have the elite speed, you know, the sideline,
the sideline as they call it, but he's smart. He
works hard, determined, he puts in the work and you
know he's a Husky legacy and we all love that.
You know, this kid has really made the most of
every bit of talent that he had. You know, he's
a local kid that played here, you know, kind of
like the two people sitting on this panel. So maybe
one day he'll have this job.

Yeah, maybe maybe with you maybe after he's had a
loan infil career. You guys that have some kids and
they can show up and play linebacker for you? Can

comes off the sideline and makes a tackle, blows his
knee out. He's done for the season. So the tight

a good group of young players. The tight end spot
I think has really been coming along.

You started early in the season with some spectacular plays,
a couple of long catches, a couple of long touchdowns,
and now you have these guys who are flexing their
ability to block a lot of the runs that I've seen,
some of them been cut backs where the tight end
sealed the backside, and Jonah Coleman's a will to take
advantage of that and make some long runs. So I
(20:38):
really believe that these guys, you know, Parker Brills for
a lot of two. Those guys have really played well.
They've done a great job, especially for young guys, and
so I think the future is bright and they may
be able to get quit more another year, come back
and hopefully and just for him, Yeah, I would like.

I he plays for Alabama?

But yeah, Decker de Graft, the young rashman who caught
two touchdowns early in the season, did his little dance
and all that stuff. These guys have really really come along.
And then on top of that, we still haven't seen Aughton,
who was supposed to be the biggest.

By the way, just to plug his brother played fantastic
last night on Monday Night football, fantastic.

In the end, I saw that Husky on Husky crime.

But Otton is playing really well. But we still haven't
seen his little brother, who you know, for all that
we've heard is is that you know, he's as good
as his brother was. So you know, I think that
position is really in good shape for the you.

I'm looking at Mario Penn State's losses at home, and
these are the types of teams they lose to at home.
Number four Ohio State, number three, Michigan number two, Ohio State,
number four, Ohio State. But every now and then somebody
will sneak in, like a five seven Illinois team in
twenty twenty one, or a seven and six Michigan State
team back in twenty nineteen before COVID knocked everybody out
(22:07):
in twenty twenty. What is your with the parka confidence
level and the Husky is going to Penn State and
getting a win Saturday.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
Honestly, it's just a toss up because we just haven't
been playing good on the road and I think it's
bad for us that they just lost the game this
past week to Ohio State for us to be coming
in there. But we have to play better. We have
to create some turnovers. We have to stop from the penalties.
If you just look at our penalties last week, we
might have had seven, but look at the crucial penalties.
(22:36):
We have them at the most crucial times ever. We're
gonna have to go in there. Defense. We're gonna have
to create some turnovers. We have to do better on
special teams and stop allowing teams to return it. And
our offense is not we can't give the ball back.
So for me, it's fifty to fifty because I just
haven't seen it when we've been on the road.

Well, their quarterback Drew allerstroone for just under eighteen hundred
yards and he's completing seventy some of his passes twelve touchdowns, right,
But what I believe we have to do. There's Nicholas
Singleton and k Tron Allen. They're dual running backs. Both
of these guys average about seventy yards a game. They
both career wise are right around twenty three hundred yards.
(23:15):
They're in the top twenty of their all time running backs,
and they're both gonna get carries. They're both really good
football players, so you don't get a drop off when
one goes out and one comes in. So to me,
Nicolas Singleton and k Tron Allen our ability to stop
them from running the football, and let's face it, on
the road, that's been the our Achilles heel. We cannot
(23:36):
get teams off the field. They're able to capitalize on
the ground game, the time of possession, getting our offense
very little time, especially in the second half, to be effective.
So if we're gonna win this football game, we're gonna
have to go in and stop paying State's run game.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
Right.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
I think our secondary is up to the challenge. But
will we be able to with our defensive line, our
linebackers create some turnovers, get off the field on third downs?
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Especially, boy, you said it, I think after the Indiana
game that they're just not ready for six play physical
brand of football. Is this more of that? I mean,
is this going to be just like Indiana and just
like Iowa? Worse than Indiana?
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Iowa? What have you seen from this Penn State?
Speaker 4 (24:19):
So I expect to see a lot of what we've
seen in those instances. Now, does that mean that the
Huskies can't step up and play better. They could, and
that's what they're going to have to do if they're
gonna win. You know, sometimes you can get confidence from
a good performance. You know, they had some big stops
down on the goal line this last week, and now
(24:40):
you kind of try to play into that. You guys,
we're capable we're able to stop teams when we really
need to get a stop. So maybe there's a little
bend and breaking there. But on those third and ones,
third and two's, maybe they can get off the field,
you know, because they have that confidence. Maybe Kamarai House
now takes a step up in his development because he's
had a big play. We talked about bruner being healthy. Finally,
(25:02):
maybe Brunner now steps up and makes a big play.
We've seen these Big ten teams and how they've attacked us,
So maybe the coaching staff comes up with a strategy
to be better against the run, especially in those shortyarded situations.
It only takes two or three plays to kind of
change the outcome of a football game. I think offensively,
you know, we've been able to stay in every game.
(25:24):
We've gained a lot of yards, you know. We we've
turned the ground a little bit on scoring in the
red zone this past week. So we can play better.
But I have to think that what we're going to
see from the other team is we're going to try
to dominate Washington up front, and we're going to try
to run the ball in their throat. They got two
good running backs that could get the job done. So
that's what I expect to see.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
Three out of four trips to the Reds one they
scored touchdowns. Yeah, where has that been?
Speaker 5 (25:50):
Well, one of the worst plays I've been wanting to
talk about is that two point conversion. Like I thought
about that all weekend, Like that is like one of
the worst calls I've ever seen, the fade route to
Denzel and like, if you look at around the globe
and you took at a two point conversion, you are
coming with straight creativity. What kind of creativity is it
(26:11):
that you just throw a fadeball on your two point conversion?
Speaker 2 (26:14):
I can't get better than that. We're gonna line up
and we're gonna do it. We do it better. I
don't know, Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. Well,
put I mean put put yourself in their shoes.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Like if we were to pin down Jedfish or Brendan
Carroll and say why he.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Can't give an excuse for that, There's no there's no way.
Speaker 5 (26:31):
I've been watching football and playing football my entire life,
and I have never seen a two point conversion unless
you have Calvin Johnson over there or somebody Julio Jones
or something you are not running the fade for the
two point conversion, But as far as the red zone
is concerned, he had a lot more creativity. That's why
it's so disappointing to see less creativity when we needed
(26:53):
that two point conversion.
Speaker 4 (26:54):
Yeah, you yourself mentioned that you had never seen the
running back who they had run sort of that jet
sweep That'square to touchdown. You hadn't seen. That was similar
to the play Jiles Jackson had run. So that's something
that I think they're finding success with. So they made
some plays inside the red zone, they had some creativity.
I'm going to give them credit. I'm going to give
them credit for doing better seventy five percent when the

rest of the year I think we've been at the
forties or something like that. Fifty percent Saturday, Yeah, so
I'm going to give them some credit. Maybe they found
some things, and again you build on that success, you
try to capitalize on it. Now, Penn State on the
road is a different animal than USC's defense here at
Husky Stadium. Granted, USC has not been known for being
a great defensive juggernaut, and they still are not, but
(27:38):
I think confidence goes a long way. The one thing
I know that helped me most as a football player
is when I had my first level of success my
junior year, Mario starting and we played a tough game
at the beginning of the year against.

Texas A and M.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
There's all this hype and I ended up having a
spectacular game after that. You couldn't tell me nothing. And
so my confidence, I'm just saying, my confidence helped me be.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
A better player.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
It made me run with a little more anger, run
with a little more confidence and strength and all of that.
So I'm hopeful that they can build off some of this.
And thank God, not just for them, but for us
that the game is not at nine am Seattle time,
and we're not doing the pregame shows at five am.
The fact that the game's a little later in the evening.
You know, I know we're not making an excuse to Softie,

but I'm looking for anything that's going to help this team,
that's going to give them a better opportunity because that
has been on their minds. I've heard from parents that
the kids are talking about playing at nine am Seattle time.
So now that's taken out the way, hopefully that's another
bonus for the Huskies.

It's eight o'clock their time, and then flying off Friday,
by the way, so they now have all day to
kind of just sleep in a little bit get acclimated.
It really means more to Greg because he can just

been very, very very good at home in the last
ten years. They do not lose at home, and when

James Franklin first took over, Penn State has only lost
twelve games at home the entire time that James Franklin
has been the head coach, and one two, three, four, five, six, seven.
Eight of those were against ranked teams, which the Huskies
or not. This is a huge challenge on Saturday night
and a whiteout in that stadium against that football team.

A win, well, I mean, you can just throw out
all the all that stuff. Anyway, Penn State at home
is a formidable football team there this year ranked top ten.

of the best teams in the country. So whatever you're
thinking about going in there and you know winning, you're
gonna have to play a completely perfect football game. You
can't turn the ball over. Your special teams is gonna

is a white house, so you're gonna be dealing with

lost last Saturday at home?

in your stadium after you just lost the Ohio State.
They are the best team that we've played this year,
most disciplined, right there with Indiana. I think they're pretty close.
But Penn State, we look at talent wise, are the
best team, and we're playing them on the road. We

have to go in there and play clean football for
an entire forty eight minutes or however.

the problem. Yeah, Well, everything's different when you're on the road.
You don't have the friendly Well here's my point. You
don't have the crowd behind you, cheering at the right times, helping,
you know, other teams jump off sides, all that kind
of stuff. You lose your routine from being at home.

We do it this way all the time they've played
at I don't care. You could call this here we
go if I had to play a football game and
excuse machine Lewis. I'm not making excuses. You said, why,
I'm giving you all of the fact. It's a factor.
It's not the factor, but it's a factor. All of
those things come together and make it more difficult for

you to win. When you're on the road and different,
you're going two time zones. Your body's kind of I
know what, two time zones. My body's all over the place.
So however, I don't care about that.

inaugural rankings for this week this year that just came out.

I thought that there were no major surprises.

You know, there's a few things you could equip with
Ohio State versus Georgia for two three. You know, I
thought BYU was gonna be a little higher. They're undefeated,
their ninth behind Indiana, and they played a much tougher schedule.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
You know.
Speaker 8 (37:23):
I guess Washington State maybe could quibble a little bit,
but generally I thought it was it was on the
money and also indicative of what we're gonna see. Yeah,
eight of the top ten spots are either Big ten,
SEC or Notre Dame, and the SEC has got four
teams with two losses that are ranked ahead of one
(37:44):
loss teams from the ACC and the Big twelve, and
it's just you know, it is gonna be weighted heavily
toward the SEC in the Big ten the whole way.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Well as it should be. I mean, they played the
toughest opponents every single week.
Speaker 9 (37:59):
John, anything, anything jump out to you about the Huskies
win over USC, say something nice about our dogs here
after their win over the USC, John, because it was,
say something.

Good, A rare, rare time. It's just right, I think
USC outgained.

Them, right, yes, yeah, first time they've been out gained all.
Speaker 8 (38:17):
Year, all right, So that was that to me, says
more efficient in situational football, and I actually looked it up, right,
they were close to fifty.

Percent on third down conversions.

I think they were very good in the red zone,
especially with touchdowns, so you can get out gained. And
they also you know, won the turnover margin three nothing.
That's obviously the biggest thing, right, So if you're good
on third down, you're good in the red zone, and
you're good with the turnover margin, you can afford to
get out gained and you can still win. The opposite
was true in all those instances where they outgained the

opponent but lost.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
Well, yeah, They were great inside like the red hot zone,
like inside the five yard line. That's where they really
won the game on Saturday. I mean, John the Trojan
start at the game at the fifty yard line, they
go nowhere, They get the ball at the thirty seven,
they go nowhere with a pick on the first play
their own forty and they miss a field goal.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Husky defense was great.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
But I also thought watching that game, I gotta be
honest with you, I don't know, man, I'm kind of
starting to feel for Jen Cohen because I think Lincoln
Riley is a complete schmuck. This Woody Marks kid is
a badass. And the fact that he ignored him for
an entire half and then gave him the ball for
one hundred plus yards. He was unstoppable in half number one,
(39:31):
and now he's blaming it on his quarterback and benching
this guy for the transfer from UNLV. I mean, does
Lincoln Riley know what he's doing?
Speaker 8 (39:40):
Yeah, good question. There's a lot of WeSC fans who
think he does not. And it's also you know, this
was the fifth time USC has blown a fourth quarter
lead because they were ahead at one point, correct after
they scored those back to bess right. They can't close
it out, the attention to detail some of the tactical decisions. Look,
Miller has not played great, but you could make a
(40:02):
good case that the USC has many other problems not
directly related to the quarterback. We'll see if the change
does anything. I'm skeptical, but they are. You know, it's
jen Gon might have to make a decision on Lincoln
Riley's job status, which is not something I would have
ever envisioned.
Speaker 6 (40:20):
But they've got to win two of their last three
and they still have to play UCLA on the.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Road right in Notre Dame.
Speaker 6 (40:26):
They may not make a bowl game.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
Yeah, they got Nebraska, Ucla Notre Dame. I asked new
Heiseel Thursday of last week if he thought paying the
ninety million to buy him out.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Was doable, and he said it's not at this point.
Do you agree with that?
Speaker 6 (40:39):
Well, I'm not one hundred percent sure that it's ninety million.
Speaker 8 (40:42):
I've seen that number, but I also know how these
things work, and I think there could be some mitigation
in that. So but let's just presume it's at least
sixty or seventy million. I don't know that they would
do it this would be his one bad year, right,
I mean last year wasn't good, but they made a
bowl game. I just don't know where things stand with
(41:03):
them on that. And if they're under five hundred, they're
gonna have to think long and hard about it, There's
no doubt, because they don't want to be coming into
the Big Ten and having one bad year after another.
That's the thing they've got to get. They can't lose
ground in the big too much ground in the Big Ten.

Hey, John, this Husky defense has stepped up big time.
I think this year under Steve Belichick, and I think
a lot of people are like, oh, it's just the
Big Ten teams. They don't do anything, they don't throw
the ball. Well, now, they played USC, a team that
was a predominantly passing team, and really they only score
their first touchdown because of a late PI call on
Price Socket an overturn of a fumble call. USC only
(41:42):
scores their next touchdown because Isaiah Ward drops a potential
pick six. So, I mean this could have been a blowout.
Talk about how impressed you are, and maybe more so
than you thought you would be, at what Steve Belichick's
doing with this defense.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
A very impressed. They have outperformed what I thought.
Speaker 8 (41:59):
The offense has been not maybe not quite as good
as I expected. Certainly like the MVP, Belichick is to me,
the staff MVP to this point, they are sound like
I look when I'm watching the defense, you know how
many assignment breakdowns are there?
Speaker 6 (42:16):
And they're not many. How do they run to the ball? Right?
You want to see the guys run into the ball?
Speaker 8 (42:23):
They do that. They're very sound. They tackle well in space.
They just they're just sound and that goes a.
Speaker 6 (42:31):
Long long way. Now, it's true the Big ten.
Speaker 8 (42:35):
It's not like they're facing the Pac twelve offenses from
last year, say, but they also they lost a ton
of guys and they have not lost nearly as much
ground and performance as they lost experience, which is really impressive.
Speaker 3 (42:50):
John Wilder as well us. Yeah, I mean they're doing it.
We talked about this in the Husky Honk Show. This
is a defense that is number two in the nation
and passing yards. They are number ten in total defense,
but they're also like one hundred and fourth and sacks.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
I mean, they just don't have a pass rush at all.
Speaker 3 (43:06):
There are zero household names, so that back seven has
really stepped up. But this Saturday is going to be
a completely different animal.
Speaker 6 (43:13):
You know.

I think a lot of us agree that the USC
game was maybe a better matchup for them. USC is
one thing, going to Penn State and a white out
with that tight end and those running backs and that
home field advantage. When Penn State usually loses at home, guys,
they lose to like top three teams in the country
at home teams like Washington at five and four don't
(43:34):
typically walk into Beaver Stadium and win games. So how
behind the eight ball are these guys on Saturday?
Speaker 2 (43:40):
You think.
Speaker 8 (43:42):
I fairly far, But I will say it's a great
situation for the Huskies because the I mean, that was
a crushing loss for Penn State against Ohio State, but
that is the game of the year for Penn State
and they were close and they.
Speaker 6 (43:57):
Couldn't get it done. Once again. They a terrible goal line.
Speaker 8 (44:02):
I mean that goal line sequence against OHUSTI that reminded
me of Washington's goal line sequence in the Apple Cup.
Speaker 6 (44:07):
It was terrible.

And I just wonder what the hangover situation will be now.
The white out will help them, the nighttime start will
help them, I think, but it could be a while,
like Washington's gonna have a chance to state in this
thing into the third quarter, I think, and if they
can make a few plays, then who knows. Maybe it's

a one possession game down the stretch. But the Huskies
could not ask for a better spot than to be
going into Happy Valley after Penn State loses to Ohio State.

Is it the venue that's the biggest issue for Washington
or is it the team that's the biggest issue for Washington?
How much better just on a neutral field is Penn
State than Washington?

The way Penn State plays, you know, I don't think
there are more than a touchdown ten points better. They're not,
and this was part of the problem against Ohusti. They
don't have dynamic receiver and playmakers right. They're more of
an old school Big Ten team. They grind you. They're
very good at the line of scrimmage. They've got enough.
Maybe the best pass rusher in the country, I'm Dual Carter, right,

Washington is going to have to figure out what to
do with him. And they're very good on They're very
good on defense, but they're not necessarily a blow you.

Out kind of team unless.

You give him turnovers, special team breakdowns, short fields, that
kind of thing.

If the Huskies play sound, I don't see.

of Beaver Stadium is a big deal. I mean, Rogers
experience in the SEC stadiums will certainly help him.

a lot. These guys are already bitching over who's gonna
drive to pit to the penn Stone, two and a
half hours from Pittsburgh on Friday. We're going out there
courtesy a venue Kings and Delta Airlines. So a lot

to get to with the game coming up this weekend.
But first let's go back and talk about, guys, what
we saw Saturday at Husky Stadium, the game that will
be forever known as the final game Miller Moss ever
played as the quarterback of USC. I gotta tell you, man,
if they would have given the Batto Woody marks thirty
times in that game, I think USC wins the game
on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
I don't know why they went away from you know,
they made some adjustments to start the second half, which
is what you expect a team to do. Go in
and have time, see what's working, what's not, make some adjustments,
and they did just that, and they came out and
bang bang fourteen straight points and both those drives.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
I think there was all.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Total like seventeen runs those two series, something like that,
and eight out of ten on one particular series, and
they were able to get the ball to the end zone.
But inexplicably, at some point, you know, when they could
have scored another touchdown, they decided to throw the ball.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Said that which led to us.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Getting a big signature stop in that game that led
to the win. I just think, yes, USC did a
poor job of sticking with what was working to start
the second half. But I do believe that the Huskies defense,
other than about you know this two and a half drives,
really played an excellent football game. They shut down Miller
Moss as a passer, you know, I know USC had
(03:36):
a lot of high hopes for him, and outside of
those in the second half, where I figure, again, this
is our depth and lack thereof showing its ugly head
where they were able to pound the ball and run
the ball against us, where we couldn't get stops and
run eight out of ten and get all the way
down to the three yard line. Defense played well, outside
of it just feels like softy. We just don't have
(03:58):
enough depth to play sixty minutes of smash mouth football
up front because our defensive line is just not at
that depth level of strength right now.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah, and I think a lot of us were kind
of afraid of that in the second half that here
we go again with the same story Indiana and Iowa.
Yet then they make the big goal line stay in
with Kamari House making, let's face it, man, the play
of the year defensively, and that's a freshman linebacker shooting
the gap to make that play. There's two defensive plays
actually three of them, but the two that I would
look to in the last year and a half for
(04:27):
Elijah Jackson against Texas and that game versus USC.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Maybe z Ion stripsack.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
As well versus the Trojans last year in LA But Mario,
that's a pure freshman linebacker who just showed up in
January out of high school. Who's making that play on
that running back? Yeah, I called that fresh legs. He
came in there ready to make a play. But I'm
not sure if it's one of the biggest plays because
we had a few defensive plays in this game that
(04:53):
led to that. I think coach Riley came in this
game and I talked about a pregame like he was
trying to be cute and he was going to pass
the no matter what when it's been shown that you
could run on our defense. He passed the ball the
entire first half and his quarterback Moss, wasn't doing great.
He came out in the second half and did what
everybody else has been doing IOWA for recent games. But
(05:15):
running the ball against US was great.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
They in the second half, they came out running the ball,
and those first two drives scored on.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Us real easy.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
And the third drive, they ran the ball eight times
in a row, passed it that one time on second down,
and that cost him because we finished them in third
and fourth and the only reason in the last drive
they had a minute and a half so they had
to pass the ball. But what I seen on our
team is our defense was great. Our pass defense I
thought maybe might not be as great because we haven't
(05:43):
had too many passing teams against us, but we proved
that we are a great pass defense team. And Greg
keeps talking about it, but he's absolutely right. In the
second half, that might be depth that were coming out
and people were gashing us up the tire field. But
our defense is great and our offense made enough plays
to win the game.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Well, we mentioned this in the pregame show, that you're
going to end the year with three or four games
against three of the top thirty passing offenses in college football, USC,
Penn State, Oregon. Did they just pass test number one
on Saturday?
Speaker 6 (06:12):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Absolutely.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
I think that, you know, we were kind of in
a wait and see mode of how good these guys
really are. But I think you know, Price SEC and
the rest of the DBS proved that they're really a
good unit back there. I think at the beginning of
the season, I don't know if it was you or
Mario felt like the DBS were our best unit, and
I was like, no, I think it's not linebackers, right.
(06:34):
I think you know, with Dixon and Price SEC and
all those guys. Yeah, Mikhil Esteen and Cam fab great
solid unit, but our linebackers are experienced. They played hundreds
of games for the University of Washington, were all six
and seven year players and all that kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
And yes, they had a good game as well. They
played solid.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
You talked about the freshman camari House who chased away
an upper classman and made him decide to Ridchert because
he's so good that the guy decided to rid shirt.
But the secondary has been as advertised. I mean, they've
played extremely well. They're really good and tight mand and
man coverage. You know, I think to me, at least
I see them put in a lot of situations where
(07:13):
they got to play man to man defense and they're
passing that test. They don't play a ton of zone,
but when they're in Mandon man. These guys do a
great job in that Mando man coverage, and that's what
you want to see your corners do.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah. Well, I tell you what.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
When you said there was a player that left because
of Kamari House, I swear to god I forgot the
guy's name as Brian parkm.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah. Remember earlier in the year quit just quit the.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Main people who kid on us. Ye, So I just
said a guy. I had to look him up because
I had forgotten the saying. Penn State is now forty
third in the country, by the way in passing offense,
and that may have dropped after the Ohio State game. Oregon,
by the way, is still number eleven. So you're gonna
face you know them and Penn State in the final
two games of the year. Two are the top you know,
(07:53):
forty five teams in college football. I just wonder, though, physically,
are they ready for a game like this on Saturday?
Because if you're James Franklin and you saw the way
USC ran the ball down their throats this last weekend,
why would you not try and rip that off and
start the game on Saturday like that?
Speaker 5 (08:09):
You would think that they would start the game off.
But we thought coach Riley and USC was started off
like that. I think sometimes offensive coordinators love their game
plan and they love what they think they do well,
and they're going to force it on you. It's just
like a defense that says, no matter what you do,
we're going to run this defense. But if you look
at the second half of what they just did against
us USC, then you would think Penn State's going to
(08:31):
come out like that. But we're not one hundred percent sure.
Our defensive backs have been playing great, and Greg talked
about it. When they're in man, they're getting beat a
few times, but they're always right there to make a play.
And in the past few years we've had a few
dbs that were never there to make the play, and
we're always trailing. Our defensive backs are playing man to
man right in your face with these receivers.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Well, let's face it, they're not even in that position
without that illegal substitution call in the fourth quarter where
you go from third to one to third and seven
and you got to throw the ball and you lose
a yard to Jyles Jackson and you can just feel it,
you could hear it in the stadium. Are you kidding me?
If they lose this game. Because of that, the narrative
on Saturday's game and our reaction right now, Greg is
(09:13):
totally different than the tone you're hearing right now.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Well, you had to go there.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
I think we all are aware that that's an issue
that the coaches have to take. First, take accountability for
at which they did. Yeah, and secondly, it just can't
freaking happen. You cannot come out of a timeout where
you've talked to your team about here's exact, we need
one yard to finish this game. So this is exactly
what we want to do. We want to do this,
(09:39):
We want this personnel in, we want this execution to happen.
I mean, you're let's go and then to break that
with an extra guy in the huddle and then nobody
notice it so that you can call it time out,
because you can call it time out and alleviate getting
that penalty. So that's a huge miss. And yes, that
would be the narrative if somehow they were able to
score a touchdown. That's all we be taught talking about
(10:00):
right now, Oh horrible. So it's that whole you know,
penalties and that thing coming back. Now, it was earlier
in the year where I heard the coach talk about
the players are accountable for these penalties that we're having.
They got to stop doing them. They got to But
this one I think was more on the coaches than
it was on the players, and so now they got
to do a little self introspection and they can't ever
(10:21):
let that happen.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Yeah, Jed Jed said there was a player that thought
it was a certain formation. I think he mentioned it
was a three wide receiver set, or it was a
two wide receiver set that got that was a three
wide receiver set. I mean, look, obviously you want to
learn these lessons and wins and not in losses, but
they came so dangerously close to losing the game because
of it, it's almost hard just to ignore it even
(10:42):
though you won the game.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
One of the first things you do on offense is
is you identify your personnel groupings for the game, and
every game there could be some slight different, you know, variations,
but you call out like twelve which means one back
and two tight ends, or ten which means one back,
zero tight ends, and three wide receivers, or twenty one
two backs, one tight end. So that's usually the vernacular
(11:04):
language that we all learn. So how do you hear
differently if someone says eleven personnel, one back, one tight end,
two receivers, or twelve or ten or whatever. So it's
kind of hard to understand how a person it was
the wrong group, because that's the first you do that
before you call the play.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Some don't, don't.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Some teams hold up like big posters of celebrities like
here here's Bo Derek, right, here's that Rihanna and.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
That's but that's for the people who do that with
the coach. I don't know that before the bar. Yeah, Peterson,
coach Peterson.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
But I'm saying you still call the personnel groupings before,
and that's usually for the people who are currently on
the field.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
They see those.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
But when you're on a sideline, you'll say twelve, which
means one back, two tight ends.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Get in the game.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
You call that before you call the play. This is
the personnel first, then the play.
Speaker 5 (11:53):
It's almost impossible, almost impossible for twelve men to run
out there. Greg is absolutely right. You're calling the formation first.
That's the first thing you're doing. You're yelling out the
formation for the play. They were sitting over there for
a few minutes, So there should have been somebody looking.
It can't just be on coach fist. There has to
be somebody whoever's the offensive coordinated at the receivers coast
(12:15):
to the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Somebody has to know. Even a player has to know, like, look,
you're not in on this formation, so why are you
in the huddle?
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Well, you got a guy in Jordia Coleman.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
The good news is ran for twenty three times one
hundred and four yards, two touchdowns, twenty three carries is
a career high for him. By the way, He's been
dealing with some injuries and coaches kind of feel like
he's as healthy now as he's been the entire season.
So when you dub goes to Penn State, Greg and
Mario on Saturday, you're talking about the number seven total
defense in the country, the number fourteen rushing defense in America.
(12:46):
Can they do to USC's defense on the ground what
they just did to Penn State? Sorry, Mario, what they
just did to USC on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
I think we can do it on anybody.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
I think we passed the ball thirty nine times this
past game, and that's not really offense. I thought they
were intentional about getting combed the ball this game for
the first time, we didn't have We had Adam Muhammad
in on that fourth and one. He got the fourth
and one, but he only had another carry. Besides that,
we weren't rotating him as much. I thought they did
a concerted effort to make sure Jonah. I think Jonah
(13:17):
is such a playmaker and such a great running back
that if we're intentional about it, we can do something.
And then if we can't run it, then we're gonna
be like Greg says we are, We're just going to
be a play action team.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
Well, I think again, you continue to use your rotation
at running backs to a degree. You know, you want
your guy to be fresh the whole game. So nowadays
there's no such he as one guy who gets all
the carries. So there's gonna be some carries for Davidson
to be something Mohammad and you use them situations. What
are they good at. Davis is great coming out of
the backfield catching the ball. Muhammad is a stronger, lean guy.
(13:49):
You know, he has more size and length, so you
use him in your short yard of stuff, and then
Jonah Coleman is your primary guy. I don't think in
college football these days, there's a team that's so great
at one thing that you have to worry about it.
I believe the office would dictate what they do if
we come out we're a good running team and we're
(14:11):
balancing passing. I think that's why we can be successful
gets Penn State because they can't just load the box because.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
We throw the ball too will.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
I just kind of feel like it's got to be
led by the defense at this point, really, because they're
the group that has been showing up consistently.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
I think the most.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
I mean, the first drive of the game US he's
got the ball Mario at the fifty yard line, they
go nowhere. Second drive at the plus thirty seven, one
play pick by Carson brun Or, Third drive at the
forty and they end up missing a field goal. Second
to last drive, they get to the four yard line,
they walk away with zip. Last drive, second and four
from the fourteen, and they end up getting a big
play by Holtzklaw on fourth down, which was his first
(14:48):
snap of the game. By the way, you saw the
way he just whipped Mason Murphy, who is the right
tackle for USC, and took him down and got in
Miller Moss's face. So, I mean, Greg guy, you may
have said it earlier in the year about this defense
being better than last year's defense, and they're still lacking
the pass rush that last year's defense at I think, Mario,
but they've been pretty consistent all year long keeping you
(15:09):
in these games.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
That's the most impressive thing we can talk about is
we talk about those dbs, but we're not even getting
a pass rush. So think of how great they would
be if we had a pass rush. Our defense is
keeping us in the games. We talked about a pregame
last week about getting some turnovers. Those guys got three
interceptions from there. One was at the end of the half,
but there's still three interceptions and that helped our team
(15:32):
a great deal because if you look at Will Rogers' stats,
twenty three for thirty nine or twenty five for thirty
nine is not great, but our defense kept us in
the game.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Hundred and fourth and sacks in the country hundred and
fourth and sacks. Yet they are what we say in
total defense so far this year.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
They're top ten.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Yeah, they're number ten, and they're one hundred and fourth
in the country in sacks. Yet they are number ten
in the nation in total defense and they are number
two in the nation and passing yards per game. How
was that possible, well, have that week of a pass
rush but be ranked that high.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
Well, you know, I don't want to nick nit pick
too much ahead. Well, some of the things, you know,
our special teams has given the other team a lot
of short fields, and so the other teams aren't amassing
a ton of yards because sometimes they don't have to
go that far right because they've gotten the ball to
fifty yard line or thirty seven yard line. So that
plays into it. But overall, these guys have been The
(16:26):
linebackers have been really solid, the dbs have been spectacular,
and the defensive line has been okay in the first half.
It's just in the second half when they wear down
and guys have been injured here in the last three
games that they've kind of struggled. So I think, you know, overall,
our defense is playing well. They're playing well as a unit.
It's kind of like that no name defense or you know,
the defense without any stars. And if they did have
(16:48):
a pass rush, then maybe they wouldn't just be top ten,
maybe they'd be top two, top three, right, And if
they did have some kind of pass rush, So I
think these guys are doing the Yoma's job. If we
had a couple more defensive linemen, a couple guys hadn't
got hurt, I think you'd be seeing even better defense.

the sideline as they call it, but he's smart. He
works hard, determined, he puts in the work and you
know he's a Husky legacy and we all love that.

You started early in the season with some spectacular plays,
a couple of long catches, a couple of long touchdowns,
and now you have these guys who are flexing their
ability to block a lot of the runs that I've seen,
some of them been cut backs where the tight end
sealed the backside, and Jonah Coleman's a will to take
advantage of that and make some long runs. So I

really believe that these guys, you know, Parker Brills for
a lot of two. Those guys have really played well.
They've done a great job, especially for young guys, and
so I think the future is bright and they may
be able to get quit more another year, come back
and hopefully and just for him, Yeah, I would like.

we've heard is is that you know, he's as good
as his brother was. So you know, I think that
position is really in good shape for the you.

I'm looking at Mario Penn State's losses at home, and
these are the types of teams they lose to at home.
Number four Ohio State, number three, Michigan number two, Ohio State,
number four, Ohio State. But every now and then somebody
will sneak in, like a five seven Illinois team in
twenty twenty one, or a seven and six Michigan State
team back in twenty nineteen before COVID knocked everybody out

in twenty twenty. What is your with the parka confidence
level and the Husky is going to Penn State and
getting a win Saturday.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
Honestly, it's just a toss up because we just haven't
been playing good on the road and I think it's
bad for us that they just lost the game this
past week to Ohio State for us to be coming
in there. But we have to play better. We have
to create some turnovers. We have to stop from the penalties.
If you just look at our penalties last week, we
might have had seven, but look at the crucial penalties.
(22:36):
We have them at the most crucial times ever. We're
gonna have to go in there. Defense. We're gonna have
to create some turnovers. We have to do better on
special teams and stop allowing teams to return it. And
our offense is not we can't give the ball back.
So for me, it's fifty to fifty because I just
haven't seen it when we've been on the road.
Speaker 4 (22:55):
Well, their quarterback Drew allerstroone for just under eighteen hundred
yards and he's completing seventy some of his passes twelve touchdowns, right,
But what I believe we have to do. There's Nicholas
Singleton and k Tron Allen. They're dual running backs. Both
of these guys average about seventy yards a game. They
both career wise are right around twenty three hundred yards.
(23:15):
They're in the top twenty of their all time running backs,
and they're both gonna get carries. They're both really good
football players, so you don't get a drop off when
one goes out and one comes in. So to me,
Nicolas Singleton and k Tron Allen our ability to stop
them from running the football, and let's face it, on
the road, that's been the our Achilles heel. We cannot
(23:36):
get teams off the field. They're able to capitalize on
the ground game, the time of possession, getting our offense
very little time, especially in the second half, to be effective.
So if we're gonna win this football game, we're gonna
have to go in and stop paying State's run game.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
Right.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
I think our secondary is up to the challenge. But
will we be able to with our defensive line, our
linebackers create some turnovers, get off the field on third downs?
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Especially, boy, you said it, I think after the Indiana
game that they're just not ready for six play physical
brand of football. Is this more of that? I mean,
is this going to be just like Indiana and just
like Iowa? Worse than Indiana?
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Iowa? What have you seen from this Penn State?
Speaker 4 (24:19):
So I expect to see a lot of what we've
seen in those instances. Now, does that mean that the
Huskies can't step up and play better. They could, and
that's what they're going to have to do if they're
gonna win. You know, sometimes you can get confidence from
a good performance. You know, they had some big stops
down on the goal line this last week, and now
(24:40):
you kind of try to play into that. You guys,
we're capable we're able to stop teams when we really
need to get a stop. So maybe there's a little
bend and breaking there. But on those third and ones,
third and two's, maybe they can get off the field,
you know, because they have that confidence. Maybe Kamarai House
now takes a step up in his development because he's
had a big play. We talked about bruner being healthy. Finally,
(25:02):
maybe Brunner now steps up and makes a big play.
We've seen these Big ten teams and how they've attacked us,
So maybe the coaching staff comes up with a strategy
to be better against the run, especially in those shortyarded situations.
It only takes two or three plays to kind of
change the outcome of a football game. I think offensively,
you know, we've been able to stay in every game.
(25:24):
We've gained a lot of yards, you know. We we've
turned the ground a little bit on scoring in the
red zone this past week. So we can play better.
But I have to think that what we're going to
see from the other team is we're going to try
to dominate Washington up front, and we're going to try
to run the ball in their throat. They got two
good running backs that could get the job done. So
that's what I expect to see.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
Three out of four trips to the Reds one they
scored touchdowns. Yeah, where has that been?
Speaker 5 (25:50):
Well, one of the worst plays I've been wanting to
talk about is that two point conversion. Like I thought
about that all weekend, Like that is like one of
the worst calls I've ever seen, the fade route to
Denzel and like, if you look at around the globe
and you took at a two point conversion, you are
coming with straight creativity. What kind of creativity is it
(26:11):
that you just throw a fadeball on your two point conversion?
Speaker 2 (26:14):
I can't get better than that. We're gonna line up
and we're gonna do it. We do it better. I
don't know, Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. Well,
put I mean put put yourself in their shoes.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Like if we were to pin down Jedfish or Brendan
Carroll and say why he.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Can't give an excuse for that, There's no there's no way.
Speaker 5 (26:31):
I've been watching football and playing football my entire life,
and I have never seen a two point conversion unless
you have Calvin Johnson over there or somebody Julio Jones
or something you are not running the fade for the
two point conversion, But as far as the red zone
is concerned, he had a lot more creativity. That's why
it's so disappointing to see less creativity when we needed
(26:53):
that two point conversion.
Speaker 4 (26:54):
Yeah, you yourself mentioned that you had never seen the
running back who they had run sort of that jet
sweep That'square to touchdown. You hadn't seen. That was similar
to the play Jiles Jackson had run. So that's something
that I think they're finding success with. So they made
some plays inside the red zone, they had some creativity.
I'm going to give them credit. I'm going to give
them credit for doing better seventy five percent when the
(27:15):
rest of the year I think we've been at the
forties or something like that. Fifty percent Saturday, Yeah, so
I'm going to give them some credit. Maybe they found
some things, and again you build on that success, you
try to capitalize on it. Now, Penn State on the
road is a different animal than USC's defense here at
Husky Stadium. Granted, USC has not been known for being
a great defensive juggernaut, and they still are not, but
(27:38):
I think confidence goes a long way. The one thing
I know that helped me most as a football player
is when I had my first level of success my
junior year, Mario starting and we played a tough game
at the beginning of the year against.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
Texas A and M.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
There's all this hype and I ended up having a
spectacular game after that. You couldn't tell me nothing. And
so my confidence, I'm just saying, my confidence helped me be.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
A better player.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
It made me run with a little more anger, run
with a little more confidence and strength and all of that.
So I'm hopeful that they can build off some of this.
And thank God, not just for them, but for us
that the game is not at nine am Seattle time,
and we're not doing the pregame shows at five am.
The fact that the game's a little later in the evening.
You know, I know we're not making an excuse to Softie,

but I'm looking for anything that's going to help this team,
that's going to give them a better opportunity because that
has been on their minds. I've heard from parents that
the kids are talking about playing at nine am Seattle time.
So now that's taken out the way, hopefully that's another
bonus for the Huskies.

It's eight o'clock their time, and then flying off Friday,
by the way, so they now have all day to
kind of just sleep in a little bit get acclimated.
It really means more to Greg because he can just

been very, very very good at home in the last
ten years. They do not lose at home, and when

James Franklin first took over, Penn State has only lost
twelve games at home the entire time that James Franklin
has been the head coach, and one two, three, four, five, six, seven.
Eight of those were against ranked teams, which the Huskies
or not. This is a huge challenge on Saturday night
and a whiteout in that stadium against that football team.

A win, well, I mean, you can just throw out
all the all that stuff. Anyway, Penn State at home
is a formidable football team there this year ranked top ten.

You only have one loss and that was two one
of the best teams in the country. So whatever you're
thinking about going in there and you know winning, you're
gonna have to play a completely perfect football game. You
can't turn the ball over. Your special teams is gonna
have to be solid. You can't give up a ton
of big plays. And you got to remember too, this
is a white house, so you're gonna be dealing with

one hundred and ten thousand people.

lost last Saturday at home?

With that question, now they have no room.

Greg just said they can't lose to a five and
four Washington team, an unraked team coming into Penn State

in your stadium after you just lost the Ohio State.
They are the best team that we've played this year,
most disciplined, right there with Indiana. I think they're pretty close.
But Penn State, we look at talent wise, are the
best team, and we're playing them on the road. We

have to go in there and play clean football for
an entire forty eight minutes or however.

the problem. Yeah, Well, everything's different when you're on the road.
You don't have the friendly Well here's my point. You
don't have the crowd behind you, cheering at the right times, helping,
you know, other teams jump off sides, all that kind
of stuff. You lose your routine from being at home.

We do it this way all the time they've played
at I don't care. You could call this here we
go if I had to play a football game and
excuse machine Lewis. I'm not making excuses. You said, why,
I'm giving you all of the fact. It's a factor.
It's not the factor, but it's a factor. All of
those things come together and make it more difficult for

you to win. When you're on the road and different,
you're going two time zones. Your body's kind of I
know what, two time zones. My body's all over the place.
So however, I don't care about that.

them in the CFP. What do you make of the
inaugural rankings for this week this year that just came out.

I thought that there were no major surprises.
Speaker 8 (37:10):
You know, there's a few things you could equip with
Ohio State versus Georgia for two three. You know, I
thought BYU was gonna be a little higher. They're undefeated,
their ninth behind Indiana, and they played a much tougher schedule.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
You know.
Speaker 8 (37:23):
I guess Washington State maybe could quibble a little bit,
but generally I thought it was it was on the
money and also indicative of what we're gonna see. Yeah,
eight of the top ten spots are either Big ten,
SEC or Notre Dame, and the SEC has got four
teams with two losses that are ranked ahead of one
(37:44):
loss teams from the ACC and the Big twelve, and
it's just you know, it is gonna be weighted heavily
toward the SEC in the Big ten the whole way.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Well as it should be. I mean, they played the
toughest opponents every single week.
Speaker 9 (37:59):
John, anything, anything jump out to you about the Huskies
win over USC, say something nice about our dogs here
after their win over the USC, John, because it was,
say something.
Speaker 6 (38:09):
Good, A rare, rare time. It's just right, I think
USC outgained.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
Them, right, yes, yeah, first time they've been out gained all.
Speaker 8 (38:17):
Year, all right, So that was that to me, says
more efficient in situational football, and I actually looked it up, right,
they were close to fifty.
Speaker 6 (38:26):
Percent on third down conversions.
Speaker 8 (38:28):
I think they were very good in the red zone,
especially with touchdowns, so you can get out gained. And
they also you know, won the turnover margin three nothing.
That's obviously the biggest thing, right, So if you're good
on third down, you're good in the red zone, and
you're good with the turnover margin, you can afford to
get out gained and you can still win. The opposite
was true in all those instances where they outgained the

opponent but lost.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
Well, yeah, They were great inside like the red hot zone,
like inside the five yard line. That's where they really
won the game on Saturday. I mean, John the Trojan
start at the game at the fifty yard line, they
go nowhere, They get the ball at the thirty seven,
they go nowhere with a pick on the first play
their own forty and they miss a field goal.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Husky defense was great.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
But I also thought watching that game, I gotta be
honest with you, I don't know, man, I'm kind of
starting to feel for Jen Cohen because I think Lincoln
Riley is a complete schmuck. This Woody Marks kid is
a badass. And the fact that he ignored him for
an entire half and then gave him the ball for
one hundred plus yards. He was unstoppable in half number one,
(39:31):
and now he's blaming it on his quarterback and benching
this guy for the transfer from UNLV. I mean, does
Lincoln Riley know what he's doing?
Speaker 8 (39:40):
Yeah, good question. There's a lot of WeSC fans who
think he does not. And it's also you know, this
was the fifth time USC has blown a fourth quarter
lead because they were ahead at one point, correct after
they scored those back to bess right. They can't close
it out, the attention to detail some of the tactical decisions. Look,
Miller has not played great, but you could make a
(40:02):
good case that the USC has many other problems not
directly related to the quarterback. We'll see if the change
does anything. I'm skeptical, but they are. You know, it's
jen Gon might have to make a decision on Lincoln
Riley's job status, which is not something I would have
ever envisioned.
Speaker 6 (40:20):
But they've got to win two of their last three
and they still have to play UCLA on the.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Road right in Notre Dame.
Speaker 6 (40:26):
They may not make a bowl game.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
Yeah, they got Nebraska, Ucla Notre Dame. I asked new
Heiseel Thursday of last week if he thought paying the
ninety million to buy him out.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Was doable, and he said it's not at this point.
Do you agree with that?
Speaker 6 (40:39):
Well, I'm not one hundred percent sure that it's ninety million.
Speaker 8 (40:42):
I've seen that number, but I also know how these
things work, and I think there could be some mitigation
in that. So but let's just presume it's at least
sixty or seventy million. I don't know that they would
do it this would be his one bad year, right,
I mean last year wasn't good, but they made a
bowl game. I just don't know where things stand with
(41:03):
them on that. And if they're under five hundred, they're
gonna have to think long and hard about it, There's
no doubt, because they don't want to be coming into
the Big Ten and having one bad year after another.
That's the thing they've got to get. They can't lose
ground in the big too much ground in the Big Ten.

Hey, John, this Husky defense has stepped up big time.
I think this year under Steve Belichick, and I think
a lot of people are like, oh, it's just the
Big Ten teams. They don't do anything, they don't throw
the ball. Well, now, they played USC, a team that
was a predominantly passing team, and really they only score
their first touchdown because of a late PI call on
Price Socket an overturn of a fumble call. USC only
(41:42):
scores their next touchdown because Isaiah Ward drops a potential
pick six. So, I mean this could have been a blowout.
Talk about how impressed you are, and maybe more so
than you thought you would be, at what Steve Belichick's
doing with this defense.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
A very impressed. They have outperformed what I thought.
Speaker 8 (41:59):
The offense has been not maybe not quite as good
as I expected. Certainly like the MVP, Belichick is to me,
the staff MVP to this point, they are sound like
I look when I'm watching the defense, you know how
many assignment breakdowns are there?
Speaker 6 (42:16):
And they're not many. How do they run to the ball? Right?
You want to see the guys run into the ball?
Speaker 8 (42:23):
They do that. They're very sound. They tackle well in space.
They just they're just sound and that goes a.
Speaker 6 (42:31):
Long long way. Now, it's true the Big ten.
Speaker 8 (42:35):
It's not like they're facing the Pac twelve offenses from
last year, say, but they also they lost a ton
of guys and they have not lost nearly as much
ground and performance as they lost experience, which is really impressive.
Speaker 3 (42:50):
John Wilder as well us. Yeah, I mean they're doing it.
We talked about this in the Husky Honk Show. This
is a defense that is number two in the nation
and passing yards. They are number ten in total defense,
but they're also like one hundred and fourth and sacks.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
I mean, they just don't have a pass rush at all.
Speaker 3 (43:06):
There are zero household names, so that back seven has
really stepped up. But this Saturday is going to be
a completely different animal.
Speaker 6 (43:13):

I think a lot of us agree that the USC
game was maybe a better matchup for them. USC is
one thing, going to Penn State and a white out
with that tight end and those running backs and that
home field advantage. When Penn State usually loses at home, guys,
they lose to like top three teams in the country
at home teams like Washington at five and four don't
(43:34):
typically walk into Beaver Stadium and win games. So how
behind the eight ball are these guys on Saturday?
Speaker 2 (43:40):
You think.
Speaker 8 (43:42):
I fairly far, But I will say it's a great
situation for the Huskies because the I mean, that was
a crushing loss for Penn State against Ohio State, but
that is the game of the year for Penn State
and they were close and they.
Speaker 6 (43:57):
Couldn't get it done. Once again. They a terrible goal line.
Speaker 8 (44:02):
I mean that goal line sequence against OHUSTI that reminded
me of Washington's goal line sequence in the Apple Cup.
Speaker 6 (44:07):
It was terrible.

And I just wonder what the hangover situation will be now.
The white out will help them, the nighttime start will

could not ask for a better spot than to be
going into Happy Valley after Penn State loses to Ohio State.

The way Penn State plays, you know, I don't think
there are more than a touchdown ten points better. They're not,
and this was part of the problem against Ohusti. They
don't have dynamic receiver and playmakers right. They're more of
an old school Big Ten team. They grind you. They're
very good at the line of scrimmage. They've got enough.
Maybe the best pass rusher in the country, I'm Dual Carter, right,

Washington is going to have to figure out what to
do with him. And they're very good on They're very
good on defense, but they're not necessarily a blow you.

You give him turnovers, special team breakdowns, short fields, that

But to me, this looks like an Oregon team that

tweeting about Gonzaga rolling last night, your thoughts on the

I'm trying not to get draw too many conclusions about
anybody because with all the transfers so early in the season.
The Huskies now, I know it's a different coaching staff,
but there have been a few times in the past
where I thought, oh, you know, they look better than
I thought, and then at some point they kind of
become what you expect as good as Gonzaga looked.

they are on the road for fifty percent of the
days and that includes the Big Ten Tournament. They are
back and forth to the East eastern half of the
country four times in the last six weeks.

And I just want to see how everybody responds to that.

I'm trying not to draw any conclusions until I see
the travel playoffs.

They are better than everybody thinks. The pointspreads have not
caught up and the betting public has not caught up
