Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know, it's really weird being here in Penn State.
Oh my god, dude, what's up?
Speaker 2 (00:06):
I just got a text from Greg uber Driver went
to the wrong damn place. Oh my goodness, dude, I
gave you the address.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Hang on just a second. Here, I'm gonna text Greg.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Let's let's see how let's I'm gonna do the Google Earth.
How far are they? Awaits?
Speaker 1 (00:23):
That's what I'm doing right now.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
There's two Champs locations, all right. We're at the North Atherton.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
Location and the other location isn't where downtown.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Happy Valley's not very big up right now.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
I don't have any idea, man, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
So Champs downtown.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
And I told you that Greg was more reliable than Mario.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
Guy.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
It's's only a ten minute drive, okay, but.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
With traffic day, they could take them twenty minutes. All right,
here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna break it four twelve.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
That's exactly all right. We'll break it four twelve and
we'll have these guys on coming up at four twenty
eight on the show.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
I told you believable this was possible.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
I mean, what do you want from me?
Speaker 5 (00:57):
Like?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
I can't wipe their tushies for them, so I can't
babysit them.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
So you sent them let's let's let's walk through this.
So you sent them the address, so very clearly they went, oh,
Champs Sports, let's just plug that in until the Uber driver,
but without double checking the address that they plugged into Uber,
they just assumed they plugged in there was only one Champs.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
All right, here's the deal.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Mario texted me at five twenty three, do you want
us to come by me? Yes, would love to have
you at seven pm. It's because we're three hours later.
Grab an Uber, to which they respond, okay, we'll call
the Uber by six thirty, to which I responded see
you at seven, to which Greg responded, okay, what's the
name of the bar, to which I said, Champs sixteen
eleven North Atherton.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
There's two of them, so make sure to.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Go to the right You even specialified for them.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
And the idiots went to the wrong freaking bar. They
still went to the wrong bar. Oh no, he's full
of crap. Oh they just got here, they just got here. Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
You know what I've been doing the last two minutes
on the ripping you for going to the wrong bar.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
That's what I've been doing for crying out loud.
Speaker 6 (02:04):
Jay.
Speaker 7 (02:04):
Well, the uber driver took us on the Wild Goose Chase. Okay,
he took us to.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
A different champs first, after we gave him this address. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (02:11):
Then as we were coming here, he was speeding down
the street. I said, hey, that was it back there.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
And he goes, oh, shoot and five blocks and turns around.
So unbelievable. Man, I know what was going on with
the Uber driver, But you know we're here.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
The good news is you gave us a whole segment
of radio there, so I appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
But hey, before we get going here with these guys, hey,
we got the.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
The fourth best receiver and Husky history at the fifth
best running back in history.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Now on the show.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
I've never been around a guy that wants his records
protected more than this guy over here.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Why not? You know, as I say, records were made
to never be broken.
Speaker 6 (02:58):
Yeah, in Faro, the Pac ten doesn't exist anymore. So
he's gotten the touchdown one forever.
Speaker 8 (03:05):
Exactly what they just you know, they added a few teams,
but it's forever.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
But somebody could break the Husky record.
Speaker 8 (03:13):
They toak not only breaking breaking broken the record for
a season. They haven't broken the record for career, and
all they do is passed the ball, So my records
last forever.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Dick, Dicky's thought about this a little bit, A little bit.
Speaker 6 (03:26):
I think he's got a good I mean, he's got
a good point. They throw it more now, and there's
more games now. So the fact he's held there for
this long, it's pretty damn good.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Come on, man, come on, man, what do we think
We've been here for a few hours. Drove it from
Pittsburgh today. I'm not sure how many bodies we passed
on the freeway on the way over here. But how
about this atmosphere. Did you guys go by the stadium yet?
I drove by it today. It's freaking enormous.
Speaker 7 (03:50):
We drove through the campus in the middle of rush
hour or whatever you call this tonight with a big
game coming up, and so we were going two miles
an hour in our uber. I can tell you what
we landed Pittsburgh. We drive out here, we don't see anybody.
All of a sudden, this campus pops up and there's
like a million people around it. This is crazy. A big, giant,
(04:10):
beautiful campus in the middle of nowhere.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
How fired up would both of you guys be to
play in this atmosphere tomorrow?
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Man, that's what it's all about.
Speaker 8 (04:18):
It's just like we only got that opportunity pretty much
when we got to the Rose Bowl. I think Nebraska
might have been the loudest place I ever played. But
to play in a stadium where it's one hundred thousand
plus and this college town like that, that's what everything
is about.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
I love being in the Big Ten.
Speaker 8 (04:33):
I'm glad that we made the move to the Big Ten,
and I'm looking forward to the game tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (04:37):
Yeah, my first big game was probably my second game
of my true freshman year. We went down the College
station and played the Texas A and m Aggie's back
in the old Southwestern Conference. Went to twelfth the real
twelfth Man, Yeah, the original twelfth stop Wow where they
just screamed and yelled the entire game and stood on
their feet and did the whole cadet thing. So, yeah,
(04:58):
you want to play a big app fears like this
and come in and shut up the home crowd. Unfortunately,
that day we weren't shutting anybody up, and we matter
of fact got shut up. So It is a huge opportunity, though,
and I think we're gonna have a great time. This
is my first time here at Penn State to see
this atmosphere.
Speaker 6 (05:14):
Well, I think the number one worry for Dog fans,
and rightfully so, is a repeat of what we saw
in the second half against Iowa and the second half
against Indiana. And that's just big, badass Big Ten football
right down your throat for two quarters. And why is
this team now better equipped to handle that? Because you
know that's what Penn State's gonna feed him in the
(05:35):
second half on Saturday.
Speaker 8 (05:37):
I mean, we go from Rutgers, Iowa to Indiana. Like,
we haven't done well on the road, but I think
this last game against USC kind of helped Michigan. We
played a Michigan team that ran the ball well as well.
I think just going having having the experience of playing
on the road in these Big Ten games is giving
us a little bit of hope. I think we're a
(05:58):
better team now. It's the end of the season. Some
guys are playing well, and I think our defense is
I think our defense is fantastic and we have a
chance to play with anybody. So I look forward to
us just having a better road game and getting our
first row victory in the big team.
Speaker 7 (06:13):
Well, and I think Mario probably feels this way deep
down inside.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
We got to prove it.
Speaker 7 (06:17):
We have a chance to do better because we have
another game, and yes, we played three or four times
on the road now, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
The game's not gonna be at nine am. That's not
going to be an issue.
Speaker 7 (06:27):
So we have that chance, Dick, to go out and
play well. Now are we able to do it? The
personnel hasn't changed. There's still a lot of guys injured
and beat up on the offensive and defensive side of
the ball. So it is gonna be a herculean challenge.
They have two really good running backs, you know, their
defense has played well. They've held Ohio State and teams
(06:48):
like that under thirty five points. So it's gonna be
a tough challenge for the Huskys tomorrow and I'll be
excited to see if they can live up to it.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yeah, I just, I mean, I'm kind of with Dick
and you guys that I just.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I mean, their biggest weakness is just an inability to
play that kind of smash mouth football, especially in the
second half, and I'm wondering if these five linemen that
they found are gonna be the five to get that
done tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
I also wonder if we'll see maybe more of Number two.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
I've heard rumbling is that maybe he was getting a
little more run with the number ones this week. I
don't know what that means if they're gonna play him together,
but we want to see more of number two. And
if we do want to see more of number two,
what does that look like tomorrow?
Speaker 1 (07:25):
For you, just means some series.
Speaker 8 (07:27):
It means if you're gonna see more of him, it's
gonna be like the running backs, you do it by
a committee, like every three series we were switching running backs.
Maybe we do that starting these last three games, as
we get him in every three series and give him
the ball the entire series, not just a few plays
here and there down at the goal line, but give
him one or two series in the game.
Speaker 7 (07:47):
I'm with you guys on giving him more series and
allowing it to be an entire series. But I still
want to see him in that goal line area being
our advantage that we can leverage down there. You know,
last week, I think we made some improvements in the
red zone. But we got to continue to do that,
and he gives us our best option, I think to
have a run pass to potentially use him as a
(08:12):
running back behind the back who's blocking. So I think
him in that package especially gives us our best opportunity
to score down there.
Speaker 6 (08:20):
Here's a list of positions that Tyler Warren has played
this year. Tight end, quarterback, wildcat, quarterback, center, eligible, wing back, fullback, slot,
half back, wide receiver, and long snapper.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Who does he remain?
Speaker 6 (08:32):
Is there anybody that that kid reminds you of, either
in college or pro of the last ten or fifteen years.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Well, I don't know.
Speaker 7 (08:39):
If you took Cordell Stewart, Yeah, and then you mix
them together with the kid that plays for the New
Orleans Saints.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Oh yeah. Taysom Hill.
Speaker 7 (08:45):
Taysom Hill, Taysom Hill and the Cordel Stewart kind of
combined is probably about the closest thing you're gonna get.
And you know, let's both of those teams, whether it
was Pittsburgh or the New Orleans Saints use those guys
to their advantage and they were able to make plays
with those kids.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
So you know, we have a weapon like that.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
It certainly is something that you can leverage in a
football game to give yourself an advantage over your opponent.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Yeah, I was going to take him Hull.
Speaker 8 (09:08):
That's the only person I could see that plays multiple
multiple positions and then gets out there on special teams
and can do it all anywhere on the field. But
there's not too many people like that. Yeah, but let's
Mario Bailey with us. Greg Lewis, Why though, was Ruben Dudin,
say a better college receiver? Well, let me tell you why.
(09:29):
He had fifteen games, He never scored in a bowl game.
He didn't score in the National championship. Oh, he didn't
score in the Pac twelve championship game.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
Wow, but wow, he did go first rounds.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Mario Bailey g regularly was with us on the air
from Champs Sports Bar here at Penn State.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
What would this do to the narrative of the season, right?
Speaker 2 (09:51):
I mean, like I think Lee mentioned this or a
Rick may have mentioned this deck about this being just
the biggest way to maybe Jetfish's career, everything he did
in Arizona, this would be as a head coach, the
biggest win of Jetfish's career.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
You said, I believe it was after the Iowa game.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Season's over. I wasn't after you. Who are you pointing
to him?
Speaker 1 (10:15):
People on the radio can't see who I thought. I
said you Iowa.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
So if they beat Penn State tomorrow, yeah, what does
that mean for you for the narrative the two of
the twenty twenty four seed.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
It changes the entire narrative.
Speaker 8 (10:28):
I think this Penn State team is the most talented
team that we've played all season, uh, somewhere right there
next to Indiana. And I think if we were to
come on the road and beat the Penn State at
a wide out game at eight o'clock Eastern time, with
one hundred thousand fans, yes, it changes the entire narrative.
It puts us automatically in a bowl game, and it
(10:48):
would make me think that our season was a little
more successful than this bout.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
And along with that, I echo what he said.
Speaker 7 (10:55):
But along with that, if you could do that here,
then that gives you the confidence to go into an
organ Right, we could do something similar on the road there.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
So it can change the narrative in a lot of ways.
Speaker 7 (11:04):
It can give this team that confidence that they need
to finish out this season strong on a high note
and possibly give you enough confidence going to Oregon to
do that.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Who do you think is better, Indiana or Penn State.
Speaker 8 (11:16):
I think it's a toss up. Actually, I think it's
who finishes stronger. I think then losing to Ohio State
here last week, and I watched them against USC, they
pretty much should have lost that game. So I think
it's a toss up right now, just who finished stronger.
Speaker 7 (11:31):
I think Penn State might on paper have more talent
than Indiana per se, but I do believe that if
they played in Indiana and their starting quarterback was there
really executed because they execute that RPO so well, that
Penn State could struggle. But in a neutral site or here,
Penn State and the slug it out, I think Penn
State could end up winning that game.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
Well.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Jona Coleman, guys last week had a career high twenty
three carriers against USC.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
I never got that many.
Speaker 8 (11:56):
Never stop, man, I get about nineteen to get on
the air in line.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Man, I'm just saying, seriously, man, you never had twenty
three in a game.
Speaker 8 (12:03):
Maybe I couldn't get a pass if he wanted to
get twenty five and twenty seven.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Maybe once or.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
Twelve I don't believe you that you never had twenty
three maybe once or twice. I can tell your line
three years of starting to tell your lines because you're talking.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
By the way, damn pen sticks sticks.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Defenses number fourteen against the run one hundred and three
point four yards per game.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Can they run the ball? Greg? Got these guys tomorrow?
Speaker 6 (12:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
I don't think anybody is invincible.
Speaker 7 (12:28):
I haven't seen a defense lately that looks like, you know,
they're impenetrable and no one can run against them. I
think everybody throws so much these days. You don't see
a lot of necessarily dominant run teams, but on individual plays,
and we're not going to run the ball thirty five times.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
We're just not.
Speaker 7 (12:44):
We just have to run effectively, get four or five
yards of carry when we run, and then that night's
our play action pass game, which is really good. So
I think we can run well enough against these guys
to be effective.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Absolutely. I think we can run on anybody if for
intentional about it.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
Yeah, I had a fact chech check, Greg.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
Oh, I love it.
Speaker 6 (13:04):
Nineteen eighty nine, he averaged twenty two carries a game, ninety.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Two games, twenty two.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
But I got too, were junior.
Speaker 7 (13:15):
I got less carries in nineteen ninety though, yeah, only
by ten though, Yeah, but in eighty nine dollars, that's
like ten carries today.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Yes, right, let's be honest with you.
Speaker 7 (13:23):
But you said twenty three carries. If I everge twenty two,
that means most of the time I got looks at
twenty three.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Let me let me throw a number at you guys,
that actually does matter for tomorrow. Ohio State went to
Penn State last week and they carried the ball forty times.
They had forty runs intentional. Okay, forty runs on Penn State.
So you got if you're the Huskies offense, obviously you've
got one of the best passing offenses in the country. Okay,
(13:50):
you've got a pretty good rushing offense, maybe getting better lately.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
You think we have one of the best passing off there, Well,
we do statistically. Statistically they do their number twenty four
in the country. Yeah, so what do you do? What's
the game plan tomorrow?
Speaker 7 (14:02):
It's what you've been doing. Be a balanced team who
does a great amount of both. I can tell you
the Ohio State team that came in here ran all
over the place, had an offensive line that is extremely experiencing. Well,
we have our best alignment. Maybe is the guy who's
third string for them last year. So I don't know
if our office is live, running the ball against them
is gonna have the same impact as Ohio State running
(14:24):
the ball.
Speaker 6 (14:24):
Well.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
I brought that up real quick, Dick about that passing numbers,
and I seem to get a little skeptical skepticism from
you that I think they're not as good as people think. Yeah, yeah,
I just would you're so pissed off and you can't
play it. That's era clouting your judgment.
Speaker 8 (14:40):
No, yeah, I am pissed off. I won forty million
dollars a year too. Yeah yeah, I want my nim one.
Yeah no, But I just don't look at our offense
is one of the best passing offenses in the nation.
I know what the numbers say, but it just doesn't
seem that way. But if I'm our offense, we're gonna
we still need to run the ball more. I love
that Jonah got the ball twenty three times last week.
(15:02):
I love it that he got the majority of the
twenty nine carries that we did rush the ball. If
we're intentional about running the ball then it helps with
our passing game, so hopefully.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
So how many carries would you like to see Jonah get?
Speaker 8 (15:13):
And overall then I just want to see him get
at least twenty Yes, yeah, and us rush the ball.
Maybe we did it so we did that last last week. Yeah,
but we threw the ball thirty nine times. That's not
good for us.
Speaker 7 (15:24):
I mean, you gotta have if you're gonna have seventy plays,
some of them got people fast.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
We don't need we don't need to throw the ball
ever forty times a game. That is not where we
need to be. But if you're down by thirty points
on the second quarter, we gotta do.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
And I'm confident too in the other two guys.
Speaker 6 (15:40):
Man, you throw a couple of screen passes to Cam Davis,
you give the ball five or six times to Adam Muhammad.
I mean Jonah rest a little bit and get thirty
plus touches for those three running backs in this game.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
I'm okay with that.
Speaker 7 (15:53):
I loved how many times we threw through our tight
ends last week. Those are usually safe passes. They're you know,
a safety blanket where the quarterback. They're usually chained moving
passes on third medium So I didn't have a problem
with throwing the ball at what thirty what thirty nine times? Yeah,
thirty nine and twenty nine runs. That that to me
is is football in this air. It's really football in
(16:14):
this air. That's a balance offensive tack.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
Yeah. I don't think we have the weapons and I
don't think we have the quarterback to be throwing the
ball for he just did and won. What do you
mean did we really win? Yes? What time twenty one?
That's a good question. Did you win the USC game?
Or did USC lose it?
Speaker 8 (16:32):
USC lost against lost the game because in the second
half of that second down that they should have rested
ball for the ninth time in a row, and then
they didn't get they didn't score a touchdown at that time.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
That touchdown when it ended the game.
Speaker 7 (16:45):
There's so many plays in a football game where you
can say someone lost the game or whatever.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
That's just part of football.
Speaker 7 (16:51):
The Huskies won the game, and they did it by
throwing thirty nine times and running twenty got cute.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
I bet you gave us. I bet you. If we're
going to look at all our wins this year, we
threw the ball more than we ran.
Speaker 8 (17:02):
Yeah, forty times a game, is not it? No, I
think we don't need to have Will Rogers throw the
ball forty.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
Times, you guys, I agree with that.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
You you mentioned the USC.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
I mean USC put up thirty on this Penn State team,
and they had Woody March go twenty for one to eleven.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
They had Quinton Joyner go three for eighty two. That's
twenty three carries for one hundred and ninety yards.
Speaker 6 (17:23):
And Miller Moss was twenty of thirty four for two
touchdowns and two hundred twenty yards. That I would sign
up for that stat line for the Husky offense right round, Tom.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
I agree, And they broke Miller Moss. He's in the portal.
They benched him, and now he's in the freaking portal
that is broken.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
I mean, you could you could.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Make the argument that link O'Riley pissed away that game
last week. No Quesse, what's wrong with you?
Speaker 1 (17:45):
What are you doing over here? Busted my balls because
I wanted the freaking No. No, I was just I
was just noticing, you know what, having to drink? Yeah
or what? Or three? I could tell it's not number three,
number twelve? All right? All right, you guys want to
hang around with you some food man.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
All right, it's on the way, uh board with Dick
Jackson Saftie with you until seven o'clock, actually six thirty.
Hu Millin joins at five, cracking hockey at six thirty.
Right here at ninety three three kJ RFM, Now back.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
To the Washington State Beat Commissions Football Friday with Saftie
and Dick on your home for the NFL.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
We got it. Who's nice?
Speaker 2 (18:40):
I he tell you what, man, it's getting tight here, dude,
he's getting really tight. Deck Lacker just sat down next
to me. Who's that right there?
Speaker 3 (18:46):
He's covering his eyes. I can't say.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Who's that?
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Greatest sports information director the State of Washington industry, Jeff
Beck told and his trusty assistant Haley Row By the way,
if anybody in here has got COVID, I'm definitely getting it.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
I'm just telling you right now. Oh yeah, yes, it
is in tight quarters. You know, you go ahead.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
I was just I was just looking up how how
we can get after this Penn State team. And you know,
USC took a twenty to six lead at halftime on
Penn State, right pissed it away Woody Marks had one
hundred and nineteen yards total offense at halftime.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Can we hear nineteen at half to half time? It
was the opposite of the Husky games we're talking about.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
It was the opposite of the Husky game.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
So yeah, well yeah, I mean I think I think
you run on these guys. I think you start there.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
I mean, I don't see, like, right now, what do
we think the best thing the Huskies are doing on
offense is? Like the numbers overall say, it's still the
passing game, right yea, what do we feel like the
best thing the Huskies are doing right now on offense
or maybe even on defense? Like, I mean, just the
four oppotions, stop of the past, stop of the run,
running the ball, throwing the ball. Of those four things,
(19:51):
what are the Huskies the best at right now?
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Offensively?
Speaker 6 (19:53):
It's between the twenties getting chunks of yards in the
passing game. I mean, it seems like Jenfish and Will
Rodgers can just in a snap of fingers go from
twenty five yard line to twenty five yard line in
like a minute and then it all bogs down. Now,
it didn't bog down in the USC game. They played
much better in the red zone. But that's what they're
doing best on offense is moving the chains via the
(20:15):
passing game.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
Defensively, absolutely, their pass defense.
Speaker 6 (20:18):
I mean, I think the back four of the Huskies
is definitely top twenty five in the nation, and you
might be able to say closer to top fifteen.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
In the nation.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
Well look, I mean, in the end, the numbers will
be the numbers, no matter what the context is, it's
not going to matter. But you've got the number two
passing defense in college football right now at one hundred
and forty two yards a game, right and you're doing
that without a pass rush. You're like, what in the
low hundreds I think in sacks overall the Huskies are
And there's no pass rusher on this football team that
anybody's even heard of. I mean, honestly, I mean voight
(20:49):
to Neufe's playing. Okay, you know Jacob Bandis, you know
olineus Davis, whatever, But there's no Big ten candidate, your
first team all Big ten candidate on that defensive line.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
So I'm looking forward to see what Hugh says about.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Hey, before we get to text and before we get
to hew at five, we've spent the first hour and
a half of the show talking Huskies, which is appropriate
because we're here at Penn State right big thanks to Venue,
Kings and Delta for getting us out here. No Husky
game or no Seahawk game sorry this weekend.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
So I get it.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
But I want to talk to Hew at five about
the Geno conundrum. And I really want to dive into
this because I heard Ian show this morning or this afternoon,
and they did a great segment with Hugh and Greg
Cosel and they both agreed that Geno Smith is kind
of an average quarterback, but that you can win with
an average quarterback, and that the issue is going to
(21:35):
be if you let him go replacing him. And I
think that's kind of where I'm at right now, Dick,
with this whole thing. That look, I understand that eventually
you want to find a superstar, you want to find
an elite young guy, you want to draft somebody. But
I also think that people need to remember and I
don't I'm not saying that you don't get this.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
Everybody gets this, but it's important to.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Talk about that if you just let this guy walk,
there's a chance you'll spend a long time trying to
replace him at quarterback.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Yeah, and maybe that's worth the risk, right. Maybe that's
just the way the NFL works.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
You have to keep going to keep grinding in the draft,
keep grinding in free agency until you find a star.
But the team has a lot of deficiencies right now. Defensively,
they haven't played well consistently the entire year. Maybe they
had their best game of the year against the Rams,
and I'll give you that. The running game hasn't been there,
the coaching hasn't been there, the offensive line hasn't been there.
(22:25):
And I really think until you properly evaluate a quarterback,
don't all those things kind of have to start popping
before we realize or don't realize if Gino is the
right guy.
Speaker 6 (22:34):
Yeah, that's why I mean, I was a little surprised
when we had Hugh on yesterday and he talked about
I asked him flat out, how close personnel wise do
you think this defense is to be in championship caliber?
And he actually thinks it's close. He says, he thinks
the personnel there is good enough to be a great defense.
He didn't like the white the one linebacker spot, right,
(22:55):
but the other linebacker spot he likes the acquisition of
Ernest Jones. He likes they. I mean he named off
like seven eight guys. He's like, I can see that
guy in a Super Bowl defense. I can see that
guy in a Super Bowl defense. Thinking that guy in
a super Bowl defense. So that encourages me a little bit.
But I also see these other teams that grab quarterbacks.
Look at the Minnesota Vikings, one of the best teams
(23:17):
in the NFC, with Sam Darnold as their quarterback. Look
at what the Bucks have done with Baker Mayfield the
last couple of years. Jared Goff was a cast off
from the Rams and is now on the best team
in the NFC. Brock Perty is a nothing and he
is being you know, as much as I don't think
he's a star, he's certainly a winning quarterback. I don't
think it's as hard to find a capable It's hard
(23:41):
to find a star.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
It's almost impossible to find a star. You got to
hit a home run in the draft.
Speaker 6 (23:45):
But I don't think it's as hard to find a
capable quarterback that you don't have to pay forty fifty
million dollars a year or two as we may think.
You just got to look around the league. There's four
or five of them out there, and I just named
a few.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
Well.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
I guess my question though, would be with Sam Darnold
and with Baker Mayfield. What are the rests of those
teams look like though around those guys compared to what
the Seahawks have. I mean, like, for example, I'm looking
at Tampa Bay and I'm looking at the way Baker
Mayfield's playing. I mean, like you mentioned Baker Mayfield right
as one of your guys. Yeah, Dick, the Bucks are
four and five. They have the same record as we do.
(24:18):
Like they're four and five. I mean, it's not like
Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
Take take DK Lockett and JSN off your team.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
Right, But up until a couple of weeks ago, they
had Evans and Godwin and all these guys.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
And I know they just got banged up. I get that.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
But Tampa Bay is a four and five football team. Minnesota,
I think is a little bit of a fraud. To
be totally honest with you. I think they'll come back
down to Earth at some point and then maybe coming
back down to Earth a little bit now. And I
agree with that, And we talked about this, you know
when when Jared Goff was with the Rams, and like,
I'm not trying to be a smart ass to bust
your balls, but you hated Jared Goff.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
I did wrong Jared Goff is you couldn't.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Stand Jared Goff, Jare We had the Baker Mayfield conversation
and nobody here was the guy.
Speaker 1 (24:58):
No, that's right, nobody.
Speaker 6 (24:59):
But that doesn't mean you can't find those guys. Just
because I don't think I didn't think those guys were
gonna be good doesn't mean they did become good.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
They absolutely did become good. I was wrong about both.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
Here's though, real quick, here's my point though, and all
of us have been wrong. I get that, and you're
totally right. Just because we say it doesn't mean the Hawks.
You know, hey, well, Softie and Dick said they stink,
so let's get the Seahawks a break.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
I get that. But I don't think the Buccaneers thought
Baker Mayfield was going to be what he is.
Speaker 3 (25:23):
No, honestly, and he's been fantastic.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
They brought him and he was making nothing.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
But I don't think the Lions thought Jared Goff was
going to be what he is, and I certainly don't
think Minnesota thought Sam Darnold would be what he is
because they drafted JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 6 (25:36):
But let's just you're right, But let's just look at
you know you mentioned, you mentioned Tampa. Yeah, they're four
and five. Well, they're four and five, and the last
three games they've lost with Kate Otten being their leading
wide receiver in all three games.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
We'll forget that.
Speaker 6 (25:48):
But before that, they were four and two with wins
over him Washington, Detroit, and Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
I get that they're four and five, Dick, but they're
not seven to two, right or six and three. I
just think that these teams, and I don't know a
lot about Tampa's offensive line or Minnesota's offensive line, but
I assume those teams may have better offensive lines than
we do in Seattle.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
I just think this.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
I think that if we want to really get to
the root of all this, and it's not fun to
talk about because what fun is it to talk about
the offensive line, you got to fix that before you
do anything else, anything.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
Well before your championship, calibly.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
Because if you draft a young guy and you turn
this thing over to a young quarterback next year, and
you put him behind this offensive line that we have
right now, he's got no shot. He's gonna get killed,
and his career is never going to take off. So
I don't even really, to be honest with you, care
who the quarterback is right now. I think Gino is
a fine quarterback for right now. I agree with you
(26:44):
down there already to be nice to have somebody who's
a little more elite, somebody who's a bit more of
a playmaker than Gino is. But I also think Gino
has that in him. I mean, I've talked about, you know,
a ton this week about that sequence between the end
of the second quarter and the start of the fourth
quarter where the Seahawk offense outside of that little drive
where they had those three you know, stupid plays in
(27:05):
a row where they just shut themselves in the foot,
where Gino and the offense looked incredible, and there's just
these little moments in time where the offense just starts
to kind of the light bulb just casually starts to
go on and then it goes off again. But I
think that's in them right now. And I think the
amazing thing is it's in them with this offensive line.
I want this offensive line fixed before anything else. They
do everything John Schneider does over the off season. And
(27:28):
I'm being, you know, half sarcastic here, but in general terms,
I want John Schneider to spend the entire offseason fixing
the offensive line period well.
Speaker 6 (27:38):
And find different people to evaluate draft offensive linemen, because
I mean, obviously what they've been doing has not been working.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
But you know, you and I we played a game yesterday.
Speaker 6 (27:46):
You would have loved this The blame game, right, the
whole segment on the blame game, right, Gino, Ryan Grubb
offensive line, and how you break up and break up
the blame pie between those three three different entities. And
when we got to Gino, I thought it was interesting
because he said, he said, two and a half seconds
is the average time it takes to throw in the
(28:07):
throw football in the NFL. So he broke it down
between how much is Gino pressured when he holds it
more than two and a half seconds and when he
holds it less than two and a half seconds. When
Gino holds it less than two and a half seconds,
he is actually pressured fourteenth or thirteenth most in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (28:23):
He's kind of in the.
Speaker 6 (28:24):
Middle as far as how much he's pressured when he
holds it two and a half seconds or more. He's
number one by far, so he said. The onus on
those plays when he goes from thirteen to number one
is get the damn ball out of your hand so
your offensive line doesn't have to protect for three plus seconds.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
We'll get you one at five if we're live at
Penn State Champs Sports Bar hanging out until six thirty,
Anthony bay Rudy's gonna be here at five to forty
five tonight giving away a pair of tickets for the
Seahawk Arizona game.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
You want to win those?
Speaker 2 (28:58):
By the way, just texting your first in life name
the words venue, Kings and the total number of points
scored and the Penn State U dubbed game tomorrow as
predicted by Anthony bay Rudy when he.
Speaker 1 (29:08):
Comes out at five forty five. Does that make sense?
Speaker 2 (29:10):
By the ways, we're gonna ask Anthony for his prediction
for tomorrow and then you text him what you think
the total points will be from Anthony's prediction.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
What of his prediction is pain?
Speaker 1 (29:20):
What are you texting like mister t and Sexton pain?
Whatever you think it's gonna be, all right?
Speaker 2 (29:25):
Text it in what you think his prediction will be
total points scored and the KP is gonna win. A
pair of tickets for the Seahawk Arizona game. Courtesy of
Venue Kings dot Com. By the way, one of the
other reasons why I want to have Anthony on is
because there's this talk about how lame the Seahawk crowds
are and how many opposing fans are showing up.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
A lot of people are blaming the brokers for that.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
A lot of people are blaming the secondary market for
the lack of Seahawk fans and the amount of opposing fans.
And I want to get Anthony's take on all that is.
Is he to blame for the terrible crowds at Luminfield? Yeah,
I'll just I'll just ask him flat out and he'll
he'll tell you what he thinks. Coming up A five

Speaker 1 (31:28):
We are back on ninety three to three KJRFM and
Brian Wheelers died. Dick, you gotta be kidding me.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
Man, just heard this news from JOHNKINSONO that Brian Wheelers
passed away.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
I don't even know where to go with this. This
is shocking news for us on this radio station.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
I know we were supposed to be doing textimonials here
Hemilling going to join us at the top of the hour.
We're at Penn State. Dick and Jackson back in the studio.
But Brian Wheeler, who was one of my mentors in
this business, and I know for you as well, Dick.
He was literally the first face that I saw when
I walked into the KJR Sports pit back in nineteen
ninety four.
Speaker 1 (32:09):
I remember him.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
Vividly with that green and gold Sonic sweatshirt he had on.
He was one of the best guys I've ever met
in this business. He was a phenomenal play by play man.
He was an absolute sweetheart with a heart of gold,
and he loved loved the NBA and loved basketball. Former
voice of the Sacramento Kings, former voice of the Portland Trailblazers.
(32:32):
Worked in Chicago for a while, worked in Sacramento for
a while, worked in Seattle for a while. Everywhere he went,
he touched everybody and left a positive mark. And this
is stunning news to hear this from John Gonzano that
Brian Wheeler died this morning after an extended illness. He
had been sick for a long time. He had all
(32:53):
kinds of issues on and off the court. I spoke
to him about six months ago, and he was not
doing well. He was not doing well physically, he was
not doing well mentally. He was having a hard time
getting his life together. I don't want to get into
any details, but just trust me when I say this
that Brian was having a really, really, really difficult time
(33:14):
once he lost his Blazer basketball job. He was hoping
beyond hope to get back into the NBA and even
mentioned the Clipper job as a possibility, but his current
situation precluded him from being able to do that. So
I just want to take a second here and just
say condolences to his family and all of his fans
(33:34):
and friends out there. He was one of my best
friends in this business and I'm gonna miss him dearly.
Brian Wheeler, former kJ our host and former voice of
the Portland Trailblazers and Sacramento Kings, among other jobs, has
passed away.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
And wanted to let everybody out there know that that
news just came down.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
Was such a huge fan when I was in college.
Speaker 6 (33:56):
You know wheels after work and you know, when I
got to the radio station, he was one of the
first people that I met.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
As well.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
You mentioned you'd be the He was the first face
that you saw.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
And I think then on that show you talked about.
Speaker 6 (34:09):
And the thing that jumped out of me was, you know,
here's this guy that I spent my you know, late
teens and and you know, first couple of years of
my twenties listening to and then when I got to
meet him, you know, I thought, oh my god, this
is you know, this is Wheels. And there was not
one hint of arrogance, conceitedness. You know, I'm a big deal,
(34:33):
I'm a you know, I'm a you know, I'm a
big time talk show host. I do play, but but
there was there was just none of that. He was
like the the epitome of the guy that you would
just sit down at the bar and have a drink with,
whether he whether or not he ever knew you or
what you did.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
He would sit there and talk to you for an
hour about sports.
Speaker 6 (34:53):
And you know it's just you know, I didn't know
him as well as you did, but certainly this this
really affects me as well too, because man, what a
fabulous human being in town. You know, we had him
on Its probably just about a year ago, right that
we talked to him. The last time on the air
was it didn't seem that long ago, but I know that.
You know, things had been rough over the last year,
(35:15):
no question, No.
Speaker 1 (35:17):
They've been. They'd just been terrible for him.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
And I remember I was I was with him in Sacramento,
Sacramento when he went down to take the King's job.
Stayed with him and his cat at his apartment down
there in Sacramento, went to an A's game together with him.
He was just so so kind to everybody that he
came across. And I remember I remember talking to him
just six months ago again about getting back into the
(35:39):
NBA and and maybe being a part of this thing again,
and he just he just could not get his life
back together. I also remember being with him in Las
Vegas when he was going to meet his birth family
for the first time ever his life. And I was
with him in Vegas when he finally got a chance
to do that, and that meant so much to him,
to finally figure out and find out who is brothers
(35:59):
and sisters were, who was mom and dad were. And
the fact that he's now gone, Oh God, this is
just horrible, horrible news for the KJR family. If you're
a longtime listener of this radio station. You go back
to the Mikey and Vinnie days, the Sports Babe days,
the Kevin wall days, the John Clayton days before he
left for seven to ten.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Brian Wheeler was a huge, huge part of that.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
And you're not going to find anybody out there, Dick,
as you mentioned, that's going to say a bad word
about Brian Wheeler. So I just wanted to get that
news out and just say how unbelievably sorry I am.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
That this has happened.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
I can't tell you that I'm completely shocked by it
because of Brian's situation that he was in. But anytime
you lose a founding father in some ways of sports
talk radio in Seattle, I mean, Gas is going to
be crushed by this.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
Gras is going to be crushed by this news. So
let's get a break.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
How about Jackson, just a few seconds of silence if
we can, for our friend, everybody's friend, and a guy
that touched everybody he saw. Brian Wheeler, former k j
I our host and longtime voice of the Portland Trailblazers,
has passed away.
