Speaker 1 (00:00):
Where week go.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
The Seahawks making a couple moves today, grabbing Marquez Valdez
Scandling the wide receiver, DeMarcus Lawrence the defensive end.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
We'll talk to Mike about all that in a matter
of minutes from now.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Dan Biles majorining us at three forty five with a
crack in Canadians playing the night at seven thirty at CPA.
Petros will join us as well at four o'clock this afternoon,
and of course, of course, a little fun with audio
come in your way at five forty five tonight. So
what is the mood like right now around the Seahawk
fan base? The twelves, the moves that they've made. Remember
(00:35):
in planes, trains, the automobiles, the movie when John Candy,
Steve Martin ever traveled by bus before. Your mood's not
going to improve very much. I mean, if I would
have told you yesterday, DeMarcus Lawrence, Marquez Valdez Scandaling, does
that really do it for you? Is that going to
improve your mood going into free agency? I mean, there
(00:55):
seems to be a lot of emotions about this football
team right now. So uh, look to me. The Marcus
Valdez Scanling thing I'll just start there. Just seems like
a big nothing burger, right, just falls in line with
the same wide receivers the Hawks usually signed, going back
to Laviskas Chenault, Marquis Goodwin. Remember that they signed Philip
(01:16):
dor Set, They brought back Paul Richardson that never turned out,
Josh Gordon. Remember is it Jaron or Jeron Brown? Remember
that move they made a couple of years ago with him?
They have him a two year, five and a half
million dollar deal and he started six games. It had
thirty catches in two years. Brandon Marshall on a one
year deal back in the day. So look, I'm not
saying the Hawks are the only team to do that.
(01:37):
A lot of teams go out there and sign veterans
and signing wide receiver. Yeah, but it really kind of
feels like the Hawks kind of rely on it in
some ways, maybe more than others. And I haven't done
the research, you know, and gone and compared him to
every team out there in the NFL, But you know,
I just think it's one of those signings with Marcus
Valdez Scanling, where again, it shouldn't really impact anything, you know,
(01:59):
in the draft, Right, you got your eye on the receiver,
get him. I mean, the guy's how old is he thirty?
He's gonna be thirty one years old in October. You
caught nineteen balls in two games with the Bills in
saintsy year ago and had four touchdowns. Obviously, he played
for Kubiak, so there's some familiarity there. There is some
you know, logic, and there is obviously some value in
(02:19):
bringing in a guy that played in his system and
can share that with the young guys on this football team.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
But I'm not doing backflips over any of these guys.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
You know, DeMarcus Lawrence is gonna be thirty three years old.
He was hurt for what thirteen games a year ago,
two years before that, three years before that, started every
game for the Cowboys in twenty twenty two in twenty
twenty three and had ten sacks and twenty one quarterback
hits in thirty four games combined. So I mean, look,
the guy's thirty three years old, right, and the receiver's
(02:49):
thirty one. So obviously you're not expecting a ton from
those guys. You're hoping the system will maybe get the
most juice.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Out of them.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
For Lawrence, it's a three year deal that likely will
be a two year deal when it's all said and done. So, hey,
you need depth, you need bodies. But are these moves
that will make the Seahawks significantly better and be really
impactful on their bottom line in the win column.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
No, I sense a negative, really negative tone. Knowing for me,
I'm not thrilled either. But like you just said, I
think I think we complain when we don't make moves,
and then we complain when we do make moves. So
I mean, I'm not gonna go down that road. I mean,
they're just they're filling out roster spots. I mean, that's
what that's what they're doing. But sure, I mean, it's
(03:35):
just all how you present it, right. You can come
on and present it like, Okay, they got a they
got a rotational wide receiver, they got a rotational defensive end.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
There we go move and But but it.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Seemed and maybe I'm maybe I'm misinterpreting, it seems like
it's you're.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
I'm not excited about these moves. How much clearer could
I make it? I don't know how much clearer I
could be.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
Also, it's a rotational defensive end. And listen, rotational defensive end.
If you were to tell me we got DeMarcus Laura, Yeah, okay,
that's a great move. It's three years, forty two million
with eighteen guaranteed. And I'm gonna key on the eight
whether it's you know, I saw Jackson Bevins say it's
like a two year, eighteen million dollar deal. Right, Okay, great, fine,
then that's nice. It's the larger aspect of this, where
(04:16):
it is eighteen gaa run tee million dollars to a
rotational defensive a lot who's turning thirty three in next month.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
And Kevin Zeidler just got nine million bucks from the Tights. Yeah, right,
so you got one of the best guards on the market.
I would have rather had him, you know, for nine
or ten million dollars and then save the eight million
bucks and gone out and signed somebody else. I mean,
if you're asking me to be excited, no, I'm not
gonna get excited about rotational guys because the Seahawks have
too many holes at the top of the mountain that
(04:46):
need to be filled with impact players. And I think
it's become painfully obvious. And we said this a week
ago for God's sakes, Dick, they're gonna make those moves
on draft day. That that's where those players are going
to come from. The idea of the Hawks getting big
time I'm impact free agents that can come in here
and really make this football team better.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
I'm not banking on that.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
So, I mean, whether it's negativity, whether it's reality, whether
it's a different way of presenting.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Look, are they important pieces? Yes?
Speaker 2 (05:13):
I just got done saying the literally two minutes ago
that you got two guys that know the system. One
guy played for Aiden dirt Ay in Dallas, another guy
played for Clint Kobiak in New Orleans. Those guys are important,
right to spread the word, spread the message about the philosophy,
the logic behind the system, the scheme. They're like extension
of the coaches. But are they really guys that are
going to make a difference on the Seahawks bottom line
(05:36):
when it's all said and done. Likely not, likely, not,
And again I think those guys will come on drafting
end of story.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yeah, and I and you made your big splash. That's
gonna win games, that's right. Agency, hope you got them
on day one, right, I mean, that's the that will
move the needle, maybe more than any other free agent
pickup in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
But so much funny about that. And we can talk
to Florio about this. There's a lot of people in
the media, in the NFL media that are killing the
deal going from Gino to Sam Darnold.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Mina Cones is one of them.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
By the way, your gal, It's amazing how many people
hate this move. I've heard more than I've heard more
than I But I mean, anytime you're gonna have a
big move like this, you're gonna have divided opinion. Well yeah,
but the people that it's like the Jamal Adams thing,
the people that don't like it think the people that
like it are complete dipsticks. It's insane, right, Like, I
(06:28):
look at it and I think it's kind of common
sense that this is an upgrade, yes, at quarterback, And
there's a lot of people that cover the game that
don't feel that way at all. They feel the exact opposite.
Let's ask Mike Florio right now.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
It's time for a weekly conversation with Pro Football Talks
Mike Florio, brought to you by Simply Seattle. Tired of
buying and repping the same old Seattle sports gear everyone
else has for the best Storm Seahawks, Mariners, Kraken, Rainiers, Sounders,
and not to mention, the largest Sonics collection in the world,
check out simply Seattle Dot that with Mike Florio here's
(07:02):
Softian Dick but hot.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
All right, we're back on a busy Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
What an opportunity with NFL free agency, Hot and Heavy
to talk to one of the let's face it premie
or NFL figures the media has to offer the king
of the NFL media corps, undisputed heavyweight champion Pro Football
Talk dot Com, the NFL on NBC our friend Michael Florio,
Michael but host, how are you my friend.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
Hot and Heavy?
Speaker 7 (07:27):
Like Elaine and her saxophone playing boy and brand Joe Jermaine.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Well, let's talk about that because I think a lot
of people are excited in Seattle for Sam Darnold's arrival.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
By the way, Sam Donald time, there's.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Also a lot of people around the country that think
the Seahawks got worse at quarterback going from Geno Smith
to Sam Darnald.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
What do you think?
Speaker 6 (07:46):
Here's the reality.
Speaker 7 (07:48):
And long before analytics became a tool for determining whether
or not team should go forward on fourth down or
kick a field goal or punt or whatever. This was
the initial tool for personnel management, and it comes down
to what am I getting and how much is it
costing me? And what else can I get? And how
much will it cost?
Speaker 6 (08:09):
And dollar for dollar am I getting better value?
Speaker 7 (08:11):
So when John Schneider found out that Geno Smith was
looking for more than forty million per year, they've pivoted
to another plan, and that plan consisted of a guid
say out for thirty three point five million per.
Speaker 6 (08:21):
Year on a free year deal.
Speaker 7 (08:21):
We get to see the details, yet we don't know
whether it's a year to year commitment like Geno's three
year contract was.
Speaker 6 (08:27):
Is it firm two years? We don't know.
Speaker 7 (08:29):
But what they decided to do was go dollar for dollar,
cheaper and better. They made that assessment. Now could they
be wrong.
Speaker 6 (08:37):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (08:38):
Last year might have been the aberration or last year
might have been the unlocking of a higher level of
performance from Sam Darnald. They've already witnessed firsthand what can
happen with a failed former Jets rookie quarterback who goes
to another team and thrive in what Geno Smith did
the difference this time around. Donald had his big year
that unlocked a three year contract with a different team
(09:00):
than the Seahawks. So that's the calculated risk they're taking
and the full value, the full details, the full scope
of the deal will be very instructive on how much
of a commitment they've made, how much of a.
Speaker 6 (09:13):
Risk they've taken. But they decided from a business.
Speaker 7 (09:16):
From a personnel analytics standpoint, to go in a different
direction and let Geno Smith go. You rarely see teams
do that with quarterback. It's the most important position on
the field. But that's exactly what the Seahawks did.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
What do you think Gino is going to get?
Speaker 3 (09:29):
How much more per year is he going to get
than what the Seahawks are paying Sam Darnold.
Speaker 7 (09:34):
Well, you know, I have been a critic in the
past of teams trading for players who want new contracts
without doing a deal for a new contract on the
way through the door. The Seahawks did that with Jamal Adams,
The Rams did it with Jalen Ramsey. The Texans did
it six years ago with Larry Tumpsons, who they just
traded this week. You give all the leverage to the
(09:54):
player who's looking for a Neil New deal, but that, presupposed,
is a significant investment.
Speaker 6 (10:00):
Draft capital for a third round pick.
Speaker 7 (10:02):
The Raiders can play this out. The Raiders can wait.
No new deal on the way through the door.
Speaker 6 (10:07):
What are they going to do with gmail? We'll find out.
Speaker 7 (10:10):
But he was looking for north of forty, and now
he's got a chance to go convince the Raiders. Maybe
he already has, who knows, but for what they've given
up by way of draft pick, it doesn't tie their
hands to give him.
Speaker 6 (10:24):
Some sort of a massive deal. But let's also remember
north of forty is no longer a massive deal.
Speaker 7 (10:30):
The top of the market's sixty, and we get our
assessment skewed by the raw numbers. But the CAF keeps
going up, the cash keeps going up, the franchise values
keep going up with the owners of pocketing keeps going up.
Speaker 6 (10:44):
These numbers are going to go up to and we
shouldn't be shocked by them.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
So DK Metcalf drafted in the second round and gets
traded for a second round draft pick and then gets
a buck fifty from the Steelers. I guess there's the
old who won the trade thing. My question would be twofold.
Why would Pittsburgh make this deal now before they have
a quarterback? And number two? Did the Seahawks kind of
(11:08):
get fleeced a little bit with a compensation in your mind?
Speaker 6 (11:12):
Well, here's the reality.
Speaker 7 (11:13):
The Seahawks had six years to get the most out
of DK Metcalf, and there's a common perception that they
never really did. They never used him to his full extent.
So how are you going to justify paying thirty three
million a year in new money, which is what the
Steelers are doing if you're not going to get thirty
three million per year.
Speaker 6 (11:30):
In value out of him because you don't use him the.
Speaker 7 (11:33):
Way that the team uses a high end receiver. You
scheme him open, you get the ball in his hands.
We've talked about this before. You run bubble screens and
jet sweets, design place to let him do what.
Speaker 6 (11:43):
He can do with his incredible physical gifts.
Speaker 7 (11:46):
The Steelers by doing this, and look, I've been following
the Steelers for fifty plus years. I discovered the NFL
on the day of the Immaculate Reception in nineteen seventy two.
The Steelers have never done this, and I mean never.
They never pay market value or anything close to it
for somebody who doesn't play for the team. Usually if
a deal like that gets done, it's one of their
(12:07):
own guys, and usually one one of their own guys
is up for a deal like that, they let him go.
So this is stunning, and good luck getting the most
out of DK Metcalf if you have to pitt back
to Mason Rudolph as your starting quarterback, because Russell Wilson's
now going to go see the Browns and the Giants.
They've talked with Aaron Rodgers have bogged down, and the
pressures on the Steelers to get a quarterback who can
(12:29):
get the football consistently, accurately, and sufficiently to DK Metcalf
to justify what is truly a staggering move by the Steelers,
unprecedented in the free agency era for that franchise.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Mike, I'm kind of confused by the high wire act
that a fourteen to three Minnesota Vikings team is willing
to make with just JJ McCarthy at quarterback. Why didn't
they just franchise Darnold for one year at forty million
dollars as a forty million dollar insurance policy. Make sure
JJ's okay and give him a year as a true
healthy backup.
Speaker 7 (13:04):
Well, forty million is more than Donald's work. It gets
back to personnel evaluation being the original form of NFL analytics.
You can't justify paying forty million dollars for Sam Donald.
You can find somebody else who can do what Donald
would do at dollar.
Speaker 6 (13:20):
For dollars far less than that.
Speaker 7 (13:22):
Let's not undermine Kevin O'Connell's role in Donald's ascension last
year throwing Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, TJ. Hockinson. The circumstances
lined up perfectly and the other thing that helped Donald,
And this is why I don't think another year would
have been sustainable.
Speaker 6 (13:39):
In Minnesota.
Speaker 7 (13:40):
JJ McCarthy was completely out of the picture last year.
He suffered a torn meniscus in the preseason. They opted
to put him on injured reserve before the roster cuts,
which knocked him out for the entire year. Donald never
had to look over his shoulder, he never even had
to glance to the sidelines, and he had some rocky
games midway through the season.
Speaker 6 (14:00):
There were games against the Jaguars and the Titans that
were not impressed. And if you had a viable backup,
you might have been.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
Thinking about flipping to Sam Donald at that point, so
I think the Vikings new they got lightning in a bottle.
Speaker 8 (14:12):
Last year.
Speaker 7 (14:12):
The planets lined up perfectly except for Week eighteen in
the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (14:16):
That was the best they were going to get out.
Speaker 7 (14:18):
Of Sam Donald, And now they've got to find somebody
else in that same range as Donald last year one
year ten millions, that's what they paid Donald. And I
think what's going to happen once the game of musical
chairs end for the starting jobs.
Speaker 6 (14:30):
The veterans who are left.
Speaker 7 (14:31):
Are going to be clamoring to get to Minnesota because
they're going to want to happen to them what happened
for Donald last year. And if McCarthy gets injured or
just face plants, they have an opening to play. And
even if they don't play, they get a year learning
the quarterback position through the eyes of Kevin O'Connell, who
I think right now is one of the very best
designers of plays, coaches of quarterbacks, and play callers in
(14:52):
the NFL.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Where's Aaron Rodgers going honestly call it for us right now?
Speaker 6 (14:58):
I really don't know it already should be in Pittsburgh.
I think the problem is Rogers.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
Thinks the Steelers need him more than he needs them,
and the Steelers think Rogers.
Speaker 6 (15:07):
Needs them more than they need him, and so there's
a gap now. And I think the miscalculation by the Steelers.
Speaker 7 (15:13):
There was this weird sense and it was never really justified.
But Rogers gave up thirty five million in cash two
years ago, and I was traded to the Jets, and
then when he was the fallback for the Rams as
they were figuring out what they were going to do
with Stafford, there was just a vague sense that Rogers
must be willing to do a sweetheart deal to go
to the Rams.
Speaker 6 (15:33):
Why else would the Rams be.
Speaker 7 (15:35):
Downgrading from Stafford to Rogers Because Stafford's better right now.
Speaker 6 (15:39):
But if Stafford wants more than the Rams will pay
again dollar for dollar, Rogers is a better deal.
Speaker 7 (15:43):
Well, that apparently was wrong, because Rogers seems to be
looking for more than what the Steelers are willing to pay.
Speaker 6 (15:50):
The Steelers apparently low ball Justice Fields. I mean, he
goes to the Jets for twenty million.
Speaker 7 (15:53):
A year, that's going to make him the lowest paid
starting quarterback not on a rookie contract, in the entire
NFL twenty millions for a quarterback nowadays. Not long ago,
it was top of the market. Nowadays it's the bottom
of the veterans starter market. So I just think the Steelers,
who got all three of their guys last year, Russell
Wilson and Kyle Allen and Justin Fields for collectively less
(16:16):
than what Mason Rudolph made from the Titans.
Speaker 6 (16:18):
I think the Steelers thought they were going to play
it cheap and maybe we'll get away with it.
Speaker 7 (16:21):
But now that Wilson is taking visits, they could end
up without either guy and that would be something. And again,
this is where Rogers has leverage, because good luck getting
anything of value out of the guy you're giving thirty
three million a year if your quarterback is Mason Rudolph.
Speaker 6 (16:37):
I mean how they might have to go find Duck
Hodges at this point.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Mike, Finally, are the forty nine ers doing a soft
reset or are they doing a hard reset? And if
it's a hard reset, why would you resign brock Purty
to fifty million dollars a year?
Speaker 6 (16:50):
It feels like a hard reset.
Speaker 7 (16:52):
When cam Inman of the Barrier Newsgroup hosted the Game Book,
the first page of the game book from Super Bowl
fifty eight and crossed out all of the forty nine
ers players who are gone, and I counted them up.
Eleven of twenty two starters gone since super Bowl fifty
eight played in.
Speaker 6 (17:09):
February of twenty twenty four. That is jarring. And I
know teams have turnover, but that is jarring.
Speaker 7 (17:14):
And when you combine it with Mike Silver's report recently
he works to the athletic Now that the forty nine
Ers are undergoing an organizational reset when it comes to
their willingness to pay players, it's going to get weird
for San Francisco. And I don't know what they're going
to pay Party. I wouldn't pay him fifty million a year.
I wouldn't pay him more than forty million a year
on a short term deal. I want to see that
he's a top ten guy. He's not a PEP top
(17:36):
ten guy in my opinion. And just because he's been
in the right place.
Speaker 6 (17:39):
At the right time, with the right coach on the
right team.
Speaker 7 (17:42):
Where he's got superstars around.
Speaker 6 (17:44):
Him, you know, it's like USC used to be.
Speaker 7 (17:46):
The quarterbacks would often not be great because their skills
were enhanced by a great offensive line and great skill
position players, and they'd come to the NFL and they'd struggle.
I think that Rock Purty is going to be exposed
now with Let's talent around him. I want to see
what he's going to do before I make a massive
long term investment.
Speaker 6 (18:04):
So my son and I were talking about this the
other night. The easy question is do you given him extension?
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (18:09):
The hard question is what's it going to be worth?
And I think there's going to be a gap there.
It's going to force Brock Purty to either take the
best offices on the table or place for five point
two million in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Mike going to relate real quick. Cooper Cup Seahawks have
been linked to him. It makes sense he played college
football at Eastern obviously from the area.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
But where do you think Cooper Cup ends up?
Speaker 7 (18:30):
The question is where does the team see him on
the depth chart and what will they pay him for
that spot on the depth chart? The Rams by signing
DeVante Adams and paying him more per year than what
Cup was going to make this year. Since the message
we see him as a number three at best, what
do other teams see him as? And the real question
can he stay healthy. Since twenty twenty one, he's missed
a lot of time with injury. At a certain point,
(18:52):
that undermines your value because you've got to be able
to suit up and play to justify whatever the investment is.
And I think it's going to be a challenge for
him to get into close to the twenty he was
supposed to make from the RAM.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
I think he's going to probably fall somewhere.
Speaker 7 (19:04):
Between ten and fifteen, and he's going to be number
two at best on a team's depth chart.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Right, Mike, you're the man, great stuff. We'll talk in
a week. See you passment, you bet? Mike Florio with
us on the radio show. We just said we're gonna
break come back and kind of recap all the moves
made by the Hawks so far, and the fans have
spoken they are applying grades to the process for the Hawks.
Next on ninety three three KJRFM.
Speaker 9 (19:27):
Live from the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio.
Now back to Softie and Dick on your home for
the Huskies and the Kraken Sports Radio ninety three point
three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Right, Dick says, I'm being too negative about the DeMarcus
Lawrence and Marcus Valdez Scanling signings. So Jackson, you want
to jump in, Dick, you want to take the mike,
go ahead. So four nine four five one, Fain says,
I should be more excited, more positive about the DeMarcus
Lawrence and Marquees Valdez scanling signings.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
So go ahead. The floor is you are no.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
I just think that there's a couple of ways you
can handle it. I mean, you can be there's three
ways you can be excited. You can be neutral, or
you can be you can look to be negative. Right,
I'm being neutral. I'm not being the I'm not being
the opposite of you. I'm being neutral. I think they're
just rote, they're just rotational signings. I'm not emotional one.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Way or the other.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
But you're literally just sat on the air. You're not
thrilled with the signings.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
I'm not meaning I'm not thrilled. I'm neutral. I'm not
I'm not angry and I'm not thrilled. I'm in the middle.
But when I read too, I'm just I just was
for the first time. I was just reading a couple
of your tweets and say, you know, DeMarcus Lawrence signing
and you'll see your tweet was we'll be thirty three
in April foot injury last year and played four games.
(20:44):
Three minutes later your tweet Seahawks are in love with
the reclamation problems.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
That's all. That's all I'm saying.
Speaker 8 (20:49):
They are.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Okay, but but okay, I'm just.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
Saying that is that is putting Would everybody agree that
is putting a negative vibe out?
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Okay, when you're saying you're not negative about him, Jackson.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
Go ahead, No, it does not put out a negative
vibe because Softie is very clearly stating the facts of
what we've seen from the Seattle Seahawks that they do
love reclamation project. We've went through the twenty thirteen draft. Boy,
they sure loved that twenty thirteen draft. Ziggyansa Luke Jokolo
that we could go on an audience Safe Doors South.
I mean, they really got that draft. So they clearly
love reclamation projects.
Speaker 10 (21:22):
And the facts are the facts, Dick, that it's a
thirty three year old pass defensive end edge rusher who
has had a major injury last year that kept him
out thirteen games, who if you look at the stats
over the last two years that he was healthy didn't
put up numbers that are worthy of eighteen million guaranteed.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
So I put my spin on there.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
But ultimately Softie's facts are right that he is coming
off of those statistical and injury played sax.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Let me let me rephrase four games. Let me rephrase
my three of.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
Those games were against the Browns the Giants.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Because Dick is unhappy with the uh with the vibe
of my tweet that I said out.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
When you called me a home I'm being a homer,
I said, I'm right down the middle.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
I think you're being a little bit of a bad
dead Bob for the Seahawks to be totally honest with you,
just just a little bit, just slightly.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
I mean, look, you play whatever role you want.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
I mean, you you want to tell me I'm being nagative,
I'm became bit of a bagdad Bob.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
I'm being bad dead Bob because I'm not adamantly negative
about things.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Signing I think I think if this was the forty
nine ers signing to Marcus Lawrence, you'd be laughing in
their face. If it was the forty nine ers signing
Marcus god DEAs Scaling, you'd be laughing in their face.
If it was any other team in the NF well,
that's fine, all right, disagree, disagree. I wouldn't tweet about it.
I'm telling you what you would say. You're the one
that wanted to have a funeral for the Niners two
(22:44):
days ago.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
I'm glad you know what i'd say.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Okay, well, I do know what you would say, because
you've said it before. I know exactly what I would say.
I'd say the exact same damn thing. If the forty
nine ers signed to Marcus Lawrence, I'd be crapping. I mean, really,
that's what you're doing. You're gonna bring in a thirty
three year old defensive then that missed thirteen games a
year ago, and that's your big signing. Look, here's the
thing for me, I am probably closer to me than
(23:08):
whatever ye like. When I say nothing Burgers, that's what
I mean. Like, these aren't signings. And I actually said
this on the air last segment to defend myself for
a little bit, and god, we sound like five year olds.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
By the way.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
What I said last segment is that these are good
depth signings. The Hawks need bodies. I mean, somebody has
to play the role that Marcus Valdez Scaling will play,
whether it's Jake Bobo, whether it's.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
Another number four receiver.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
I just saw a guy on social media say that
MVS is the Seahawks new number two. Guys, come on,
if he's their new number two, that room just got
a lot weaker. There was a year eg number two,
And if you don't agree with that, then you're gonna
pry your head at a John Schnyder's backside. If you
don't agree with that, somebody has to play the role
of DeMarcus Lawrence. Like, there's a role for these guys
on the team. But if you're telling me that you're
(23:53):
in neutral in your Switzerland, then they're just nothing burgers.
They're just nah, They're just They're important pieces towards the
back end of the roster, but in no way do
they make any major impact on your bottom line when
it comes to winning and losing football games. I went
into the off season wanting one thing over any other,
and you know what that is fix the damn offensive line.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
And they haven't done that yet.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
And I'm watching Kevin Zeitler get a one year deal
for nine million bucks of the Titans.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
That irritates me.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
I'm watching Josh Myers get three and a half million
from who again, by the way, the Jets who started
for the Packers for three years in a row at center.
I'm watching all these guys go by. So now I'm
just at a point where I look, they're not going
to make a big splash in free agency. They're not
going to improve their offensive line much in free agency.
What fires me up? You want me to be positive,
I'll be positive. I'll put a smile on my face
(24:42):
and say this. At the same time, they got five
picks in the first ninety two.
Speaker 1 (24:46):
That fires me up. That excites me.
Speaker 2 (24:48):
I'm gonna be thrilled on draft day if they can
find the line of the future, I'm gonna be humping
the floor the way Millin was the night we drafted
DK Metcalf. If the Hawks would have gone out and
gotten Joe Toney and Joe to Jackson like the Bears did,
or made the moves like the Vikings did on their
offensive line, I'd.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
Be thrilled right now. But that's what I'm waiting for.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
I'm a longtime Seahawk fan that's sickond effing tire of
watching this horsecrap offensive line get pushed around every year,
show me it's better and that I'll be fired off.
Speaker 3 (25:16):
So I think maybe maybe that's the reason you're angry
at these signings, because I'm I'm seeing it two different ways.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
I'm seeing that there's two buckets.
Speaker 8 (25:24):
For me.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
I'm disappointed they haven't signed an offensive lineman yet, I'm disappointed.
I'd say I'm disappointed, but these signings don't disappoint me.
So it almost seems like because they haven't signed an
offensive lineman that that makes you more sour on these side.
Speaker 8 (25:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
I mean, when I'm watching Kevin Zeidler go for nine
million bucks and Josh Myers go for three and a half,
instead we end up with Marcus Valdez Scanling and DeMarcus Lawrence,
I'm like, guys, what are we doing right?
Speaker 1 (25:50):
Like, hey, again, those are those are fine signings.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
They're fine little pieces that will play some kind of
a little role on this football team. But this offseason,
my god, I'm getting so sick and effing tired of
people telling me every year how much money the Seahawks have.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
This is the second year in a row.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Even like the last three years, they've had a decent
amount of money.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
And they do nothing with it. Eighteen went to Lauren and.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
You know what, this is just who they are, right
and it's it's it's who Schneider is.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
We tweeted that out a couple of days ago. Why
would you expect any different.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
We've known the guy for fifteen years now, we know
exactly how the man's going to perform in free agency.
This is what they do. I got even Bob Candota,
who covers the team from a beat writer perspective, saying,
don't expect anything of notes on the offensive line. Nothing
of notes. So it's gonna come in the draft. And
I love the draft pieces they have. I love what
they've done with their draft capital.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
But two things.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
There's a history of not being able to perform when
it comes to fixing the offensive line, and this football
team has not done anything of relevancy for eleven consecutive seats.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
So they only wanted Will Fries. That's the only offensive Apparently.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
Candota said that they wanted him to take a physical
and come to Seattle, and he didn't.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Want to do it.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
No, it's because you can't want to get physical nil
after the deadline.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
Correct didn't want to wait.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
He wanted the burden hand that he got from was
a Minnesota don't blame him you Yeah, no, not at all,
five year deal versus a three year.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Okay. So I will try and be more positive the
rest of the show. I will be.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
I will I will be more positive and not so negative, uh,
the rest of the day. Right here on ninety three
three KJRFM, it's.
Speaker 9 (27:33):
Time for Sathi and Dick's weekly visit with set Creton
head coach Dan Bilsma, brought to you by Dick's Drive In,
serving great burgers, fries and Chase the hockey fan.
Speaker 1 (27:42):
Since nineteen fifty four.
Speaker 9 (27:44):
Stop into one of the nine Dicks Drive Ins locations
today now with our head coach Dan Bilsma, Beer's SAFTI
and d all.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
Right, boys that girls back here on a busy Wednesday afternoon,
get back to some of the Cummings Wings in the
NFL in a matter of minutes. But our weekly converce
station brought to you by our friends at Dick's Drive
Ins with the head coach of your Seattle Kraken, Dan
Balsma with us right now on ninety three three kJ
R f M Coach, how are you I'm doing good today?
Speaker 8 (28:11):
Game day.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
I mean, I feel terrible intruding on your game day routine.
How much is this just throwing you off your funk,
Shua having to talk to us on game day man.
Speaker 6 (28:23):
A little bit, A little bit.
Speaker 8 (28:24):
We're all about We're all about routine. And I'm not superstitious.
I'm titious. So do the same thing over and over again,
and we got to make this a superstition. Yeah, well today,
and I'll talk to you again next game.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
That's right, that's right. You win today, you'll be coming
on every pregame. If you lose today, it's not our fault.
By the way, don't don't don't blame us. But you've
played a few games under your belt since since the trades.
Give us an idea of just how the boys have responded,
how they've come together since the shakeup, if you will,
(28:59):
I think.
Speaker 8 (28:59):
It's uh, you know, it's it's an emotional time of year.
I think it's on everybody's mind, and it's on the
team's mind. I'll say, when you get to the trade
deadline and having had some trades, some guys going out
with some guys that were a part of this team
for a while, that's as emotional. It's a big moment
(29:22):
for the team. I think with the leadership of Jordan Everley,
I think the players have responded with I don't want
to say are two best games of the year, but
when you're talking about winning efforts, when you're talking about
doing the little things and and compete level, the last
two games against Philly and Washer or two of our
(29:42):
benchmarks for the year, Well.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
That's Philadelphia game.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
That was one of, like you mentioned, one of the
most impressive games in the year.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
Talk about Groovy in that game.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
How about a ninety five point eight save percentage in
his time back.
Speaker 8 (29:54):
Yeah, awesome for Groovy to step in there, I think,
and just even how the game unfold that we had
to kill three penalties off and in the first period,
which meant he had some action and we had some
good quality scoring chances. He had some second chances in
and around the net, and he came up big. Was
bigger than that for us. Gave us a chance to
(30:15):
well we you know, continue that game forward and win
that game ultimately. Is so it was great for him,
great for him to step back in there after his
time and CV and get us a win.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
It kind of feels like this is maybe a good
time for a young kid like a Shane Wright to
continue to climb and continue to starve for you. I mean,
you look up, coach, and all of a sudden, he's
what fourth and points on your team overall. And I
don't know, maybe I'm just being too simplistic here, but
the way he's playing, he really kind of looks like
he's the future of this team and that there's a
(30:48):
chance for him to prove that to you in the
final seventeen games of the year.
Speaker 8 (30:53):
I to me, we were again we talked a couple
of weeks ago with uh, you know, this team has
a mindset of winning the two out of three games
and playing their best hockey going down the stretch here
and that is Shane included. And I think you you know,
(31:14):
with with Shane and Maddie and Chandler Stevens send down
the middle of the rink, it's you know, one of
one of the keys to a good hockey team is
strong down the middle in the center position. And you know,
since since mid uk Lay in November when Shane set
out the three games, his his points, his production, his
goals have been at the tops for our team and
(31:35):
it continues. It's continued, you know recently the late and
scoring scoring goals again and on the Spur sheet almost
every night with his line. And that's that bodes well,
that's a good future for us.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
How about the performance of another twenty one year old
that just got his debut in Malonson.
Speaker 8 (31:55):
Mel He's uh. I think I hope hopefully you got
a chance to watch that game, because I think Mel
is a player who can make a statement with each
and every game he plays, whether it's ten minutes of
hockey or fifteen minutes of hockey. H he has a
knack for ticking his nose in the in the action,
(32:16):
getting I say, three yards and a cloud of dust.
Is Mell in his game and stepped in in Nashville
and did just that. Played ten minutes of hockey. But
that was filled with uh, it was still with physicality,
It was filled with energy, was filled with the scrumbs
around the net. Ye. That's that's exactly what you're gonna
get from Mel.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
I mean every night, coach, I gotta tell you, if
there's one thing that we need more of, its phonetics
in hockey. Yeah, I mean you got this this finished kid?
Is it is it Yannie Nyman. Am I getting his
name right? Please tell me I get it right?
Speaker 8 (32:46):
Yeah, Newman, it's you're you're gonna I'm not gonna be
one hundred percent confident. I never am with a finished name,
but yes it is. It's Newman.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
Gotcha all right?
Speaker 2 (32:56):
Because I'm gonna say if you don't know that, I
don't feel bad for not knowing that.
Speaker 8 (33:00):
Yeah, it took me a while to get comfortable with
saying the name as Newman because I was looking for
some finished pronunciation. And but it's Yannie Newman.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
Yes, what's his status Newman?
Speaker 8 (33:13):
Yeah, it's he's going to be playing tonight. He's going
to be Uh. I said this. This is a guy
who you know, there's a there's a big promise for
the future with with this guy because of his shot.
He's got an electric shot. He's got an NHL I
want to say NHL shot because it's better than than
(33:33):
the most And when he's playing his game, you're going
to see this guy with a one timer. He's on
the opposite side of old Vetchkin, but on the power
play one time or over in that spot. But he's
a big body guy who when he's playing his game
like his shot is a statement when when he's out
(33:53):
in every ice and he's you know, he's done a
good job of developing that this year, he stepped over
last year's TV at the end of the year year
and got used to North America, got used to North
American hockey. This year in CBE twenty six goals leads
the rookie and scoring and to see a highlight reel
of his goals, you're going to see fifteen sixteen, seven
(34:14):
time and be a one time or a heavy rister
from that side. It's it's overpowering.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
What are you looking for when you're watching Malanson or
Newman like? Is there something specific that you're looking for,
whether it's confidence or just taking the next step?
Speaker 1 (34:31):
What do you keep your eyes on when these guys
are out on the ice.
Speaker 8 (34:36):
As it's a difficult thing, I think for a first
time NHL game, you know, stepping into the NHL as
a young kid, and most important thing is you just
go out and play your game. You have a confidence
to go out and do what you can do. It's
the worst thing that can happen is at the end
of the game, we don't know what kind of player
you are. And don't need to think about mistakes. You
(34:58):
don't need to worry about you know well, we'll all
make him. Just don't worry about you know where you
should be, how it should go. Put all that aside,
Go out play your game. Make sure we all know
how you what you are as a player.
Speaker 1 (35:10):
At the end of the match, I love it.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Hey, go get him tonight a little bit later, seven thirty,
face off.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
We'll have the game on radio.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
Best of luck, and again, if you win tonight, you'll
just come on every pregame and we'll just call it good.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
All right, So get.
Speaker 8 (35:23):
Ready, well, plan on talking on Friday.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
Then done. All right.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Dan Beisema with us, head coach of the KRACK and
we got to face off at seven thirty against the Canadians.
We're gonna break a lot more to get you on
a busy, busy Wednesday with NFL. Petro is going to
join us and talk about Sam Darnold. He's from his
neck of the woods down there in California. Coming up
on ninety three three KJRVM
