Speaker 1 (00:00):
Some sad news in the ANHL Columbus Blue Jackets.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Johnny Gudreau and his brother Matthew were both killed yesterday
when they were struck by a drunk driver while riding
bicycles in New Jersey. Both were in the area to
be groomsman dick at their sister's wedding this weekend. How
about that? What would you do? Like, I'm honestly very
intrigued by this. So they're in New Jersey, they're both
(00:26):
from New Jersey, Johnny and his brother Matthew. Johnny played
for Columbus obviously, and they're in New Jersey because they're
gonna be groomsmen at their sister's wedding, which I think
is set to be tonight. By the way, what would
you do if you were the sister? Like, if you're
getting married and you had two brothers that were killed
the night before by a drunk driver, and twenty four
(00:46):
hours later you got a rally and put a smile
on and get married, how do you handle that team?
Speaker 3 (00:50):
I think to go to the courthouse and just get
it done. And then I think you treat you're obviously stile.
You had the venue everything like that set up. You
treat it as a celebration of their lives. That's not bad.
It's the only way to do it.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
That's not bad.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
And you don't even really I would, I would say
on top of that, maybe don't even do the ceremony
at all.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
Just do the celebration of life exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
And then how how do you like a dance floor?
Speaker 5 (01:15):
Yeah, because you're not going to be happy when you
get married, so of course, you know, have you have
your celebration of life, you know, and then two three
months down the road have your ceremony, and then if
you want to do a little party then but I.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Mean, you just you can't. You can't even can't be
in a good mood, right, you can't. You can't party.
You think about a wedding, and I mean, I have
no idea what these people like to do or what
they don't like to do. Maybe they're not dancers and
they don't drink. I have no idea. For all I know,
they're Mormon, for God's sakes, and they're drinking die cokes.
But look, how do you get on the dance floor?
How do you have an open bar? How do you
(01:49):
have a DJ?
Speaker 6 (01:50):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:51):
All that stuff that you were talking about doing and
it's just it's a tragedy. I mean, like you know,
we use that word tragedy a lot. Like you guys
are aware of the situation with the Weber State play
by play guy.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
Yeah, I think you told so.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Carl Larky is going to be on the pregame show tomorrow.
He is the voice of Weber State football. He's not
supposed to be the voice of Weaver State football. He's
the voice of Weaver State football. Because the guy that
was doing Weber State football, who Ian Ferness knows very well,
his named Steve cloke about a month ago got killed
as he's walking off the sidewalk and hit by a car.
(02:26):
And so a month later Carl's got takeover right season
starting and he did the play by play for a while.
I think he retired like nine years ago. But Clokey
did the the the Triple A baseball team down there
in Ogden, Utah, big deal down there, and he got
hit by a car.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
He just stepped off of freaking sidewalk. He's dead.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
And so now Carl is taken over to do the
play by play. There's going to be a tribute to Klokey.
Actually at Husky Stadium tomorrow the first time out of
the first quarter. So if you're watching that, keep an
eye out for that. But you know, when something like
this happens, and I think every now and then it's
fair to kind of take a detour from sports and
just become a public service announcement radio station for a
(03:04):
little bit of a second.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
It's Labor Day weekend, if you're.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Going out tonight, if you're going out tomorrow, if you're
gonna have fun on Sunday night, because you've got Monday
off and you get trashed, calling Uber?
Speaker 1 (03:14):
All right, calling Uber.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
And I have a theory, by the way, on why
some people don't call ubers, And one of them is
because they're dumb, all right.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Number two, because they're just plowed. Number three.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
I know a lot of guys and a lot of
goals that would be afraid to call their spouses and
tell them I'm drunk, Come pick me up. Don't be
afraid to do that. And if you're married and you
know your husband or wife is going out with some friends,
hey have fun. If you get drunk, call me, I'll
come get you. Okay. My wife says that to me constantly.
All Right, you're going out having.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Fun, you need me.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I'm here for you, no big deal, I honestly think,
And I am no marriage expert, okay whatsoever. Yeah, I
honestly think that if everybody who were married had a
conversation tonight about that and said, you know what, if
I get drunk or if you get drunk this weekend,
let's not be mad. Let's just make a pack to
call each other to come pick us up and leave
(04:08):
the damn car where it is. Don't be afraid to
call your wife or husband to come get you. And
I think some people are afraid to make that call.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
I think that's true.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
Yeah, I think most of the time that I most
of the time I'm with my wife when I'm drinking anyway,
and we've got call me.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
But see, well we don't we get you.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
We tag team, and we were a flat out wwe
tag team when it comes to that.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Because I'm an I like to drink.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
I like to prefunk, and she likes to drink as
the party is going and closing down, which I don't
really like to after I eat, I don't like to
drink anymore.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
So it's perfect Like.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
She drives there, I drive home and it works out good,
So maybe try that at.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Home with your spouse.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
So everybody's saying on the text line, the wedding was canceled, right,
so not not not surprised, So just it's a tragic thing, man,
And again it's just, you know, good, good for them
just making that decision to move on. But what a
what a horrible, awful memory that this gal is going
to have for the rest of her life eventually, when
the ceremony takes place or she ends up signing the
(05:08):
wedding papers, that she's gonna think about her two brothers
getting killed by a drunk driver. Dude, so brutal. Just
keep that in mind this weekend, all right, all right,
here we go. Danny Canell will join us. Coming up
next segment. Jerry Brewer is on the radio show today.
He'll join us as well. I think he's back from
France finally, is that right? They went on a wine
and cheese tour with a family, And he'll join us
(05:29):
today at four o'clock. Humulin is going to be with
us as well at five, and then Jed Fish had
a chance to catch up with him yesterday over at
you Dub He will join us on the air around
five forty five or so tonight before the Weber State
game tomorrow. I'm not expecting a giant crowd. I think
it's funny because I don't know how much this is
(05:49):
a story in other cities around college football. I'm certain
in other Pac twelve former Pac twelve schools it's more
of a story. But for us in Seattle, the crowd
size and the kickoff time right there, that's a story, yes, right,
Like people wonder how many people are going to show up,
(06:09):
what time is the game going to be? When do
we find out about kickoff? And I don't know if
those are stories in Tuscaloosa. No, for our buddy Ryan Fowler,
nobody's sitting around to baiting, man, how many folks you
think will show up to watch Bama this week?
Speaker 5 (06:20):
In fact and Happy Valley, they can't wait for a
seven thirty start.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Because it's a light out, right, no, no, no question.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
So that's the story here though, And you know nobody's
expecting a great crowd. Students aren't even on campus yet,
and you know we know about that when the student
section's foul looks totally different. But I wonder what Jetfish's
reaction is going to be tomorrow ac because Jetfish Dick
has gone out of his way to mention he wants
people there. He did the scrimmage, and he did the
spring game. Yes, and I was talking about Weaver State.
(06:48):
This is something he thinks about.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
No, there's no question.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
And you mentioned that he was kind of surprised with
the turnout and the media on Thursday right at the
you know, And I just think that we have to
switch our focus to be big time college football fans
at all times, and not just when we play Oregon,
and not just when we play Washington State in November,
(07:12):
which is never gonna happen again, and not just when
the team has double digit wins. I mean, we need
to follow this team all the time. We need to
support this team all the time. And if you're asking, well,
why why can't I just follow the team, follow the
team whenever I want, Well, you're gonna fall behind in
this day and age of college football. You're going to
(07:32):
fall behind if you do that. It's not like that
in the NFL because there's owners, right, and the owners
can decide how much money they want to pay, and
there's a salary cap in the NFL but when it
comes to college football, it's all about how much support
and how much money you give your football team compared
to the teams that you're playing against.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Ah, let's do this. We're gonna break. Danny Kanal's gonna
join us. What did the Colorado guy?
Speaker 1 (07:55):
You called him a super ho here ho pure ho.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Yeah, we got we got to talk about that and
get his thoughts on Colorado.
Speaker 7 (08:02):
Man.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Wow, how about them almost going down to the Bison
last night? Danny canell is going to join us and
help us kick off the college football season next on
ninety three three KJRFM.
Speaker 8 (08:11):
Live from the R and R Foundation Specialists Broadcast Studio.
Now back to Softie and Dick on your home for
the Huskies and the Kraken Sports Radio ninety three point
three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Well, you know it's college football season because we're now
allowed to talk to Danny canell I mean, they protect
this guy like the popemobile. You know, Donald Trump has
got the glass now in front of him when he
does his speeches, and.
Speaker 5 (08:38):
Those guy's in bubble wrap from January twelfth to August
twenty ninth.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
They they protect him like the Dan Mona Lisa. I
mean it is unbelievable. I am sitting here in like
the middle of July, the middle of May. Let's talk
to Danny Canell. Nope, Damn Deale calladae football. So here
he is courtisy a bet online dot Net. Check out
bet online dot New for the updated college football playoff
Win Totals conference. He's been college football week one lines
(09:05):
Daddy Canal is back baby on the radio show how
are you man?
Speaker 6 (09:10):
Oh, it means college football back. I hope you guys
weren't painting me as a diva like I don't want
your listeners to think I'm like to I'll come on
with you guys anytime of the year.
Speaker 7 (09:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Yeah, you like your handlers people, I actually talk to them.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
I actually painted to you as an egomaniac, to be
honest with you over the over the offseason, said this,
this this bum many thinks he's better than as you
think he is. But dude, I got to ask you
first of all before we talk about the Huskies and
everything happening up here with Jed Fish. So the Colorado
game last night reminded me of this. So Petros Papadakas
does a show with us every Wednesday and We've been
(09:47):
doing the show at Petros for like fifteen years now.
And he said that somebody on Colorado's staff, either a
player or coach, referred to you as a pure ho.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
Is that right?
Speaker 6 (09:56):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Yeah, who was?
Speaker 6 (09:57):
Yeah, that is true. That would have been one Dion
Sanders' son, Junior Bucky is what they call him. Yeah,
that was the one where And I saved that. So
I'm saving receipts this year because a lot of a
lot of people were reveling in Florida State's lost to
Georgia Tech, and they were trolling me and having fun
(10:20):
with it. And I saved a lot of those tweets
because I'm gonna remind a lot of those fans when
they lose what it feels like. Not that I'm not
that I'm petty or anything like that, but when he
did call me pure hoe, which he did, I did
save the tweets, And I waited four months to go
back to him. When the final game of the regular
season ended and they had lost six straight, I did
(10:43):
throw it back out there and just asked him if
his dad let him use that language. And I might
have put it a little bit more sarcastically and we're
more emphasis on it, but it was the one like
and that's you know what bothers me the most about him.
He doesn't even play like he's the social media he's
a social media guy. He just takes video if it
was like and I would never go at Shadoor or
Shiloh or even Dion because there were ones out there
(11:05):
putting it on the line. This guy's talking all that
trash and he's just the son that takes videos on
the sideline and tweets stuff out. That's why I got
fired up about it, and I'm not feel salty about
it at all. In case you can, no, not at all.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
Well, you do talk about how talk about how Dion's
handling his business.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
You know there's the scrape with the Denver reporter.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
I mean so often I were just talking off the
air about how you know, they've gone from maybe the
most liked team three hundred and sixty five days ago,
everybody was rooting for him against TCU to now where
everybody was rooting against him.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
Last night against NOE Dakota State.
Speaker 6 (11:38):
Yeah, it's it was really perplexing to see Dion the
way that he handled everything the last month or two
before the season, right, he wouldn't talk to the CBS reporter.
Then he calls out the Denver Post calumnists and bans him.
And you know, it's just especially because exactly what you said,
who got more favorable treatment that four and eight? Maybe
(12:01):
in the history of college football, Like, seriously, has there
ever been a coach that you know, was still, you know,
time person of the Year in college you know, like
on the cover of magazines after a season which was
by all means a failure, Like and I know they
were not that good year before, but we also had
other teams that were one win teams. David Brawn at
(12:22):
Northwestern turned their program around. They went one to eleven,
their coach was fired. It was a way worse situation.
They had eight wins. The coach at South Florida, Alex
golesh one win season. They go bowling the first year
on the job. So like there were other great stories too,
and he had all this attention come in his way
and then to burn a lot of those bridges. I
just I was really perplexing. I don't understand if there's
(12:45):
a method to his madness, like if he's trying to
use it to galvanize his team used a distraction and
talk about something else, but it didn't make any sense.
I'll say this, I've given up trying to figure out
him or Colorado, how good or bad they're gonna be.
You know what I'm gonna do, going to tune in
and sit back and be entertained, because that's the one
thing it seems always guaranteed when they're on the field,
(13:06):
the game is going to be entertaining. And it might
be for something a player does or says right, but
there's also great plays and Travis Hunter, I'm telling you,
And people were upset because I said I think he's
the best player in college football, and people are like, oh,
it's only one game. What he's doing. He played one
hundred and twenty six snaps. That hasn't been done probably
in twenty years in college football with a player going
(13:27):
both ways with that much of a workload on his shoulders.
Like even when guys like Champ Bailey was doing it
at Georgia or other guys who out the history of
college football have done it recently, they were kind of
used sparingly. It's for special situations. Travis Hunter was the
number like he was the second number target but sorry,
but I mean he had three touchdowns. He was clearly
(13:48):
the guy they were going to. And then there's a
corner he's expected to shut down the opponent's best receiver.
I think it's phenomenal what he's doing, and I love
watching him play. He is just a football player. And
I'm wildly worried about the usage rate because they're using
them so much. But I'm going to tune in and
watch just like everybody else.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Hunter was the five star guy that went to jackson
for the bag of money?
Speaker 7 (14:09):
Is that right?
Speaker 1 (14:09):
Would be on?
Speaker 6 (14:11):
And he oh, he was committed for about two years
to Florida State. So Florida State fans are upset about that?
Do you so?
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (14:17):
He so he would have gone somewhere else for sure,
Power five, no doubt. I mean, you're right, he's a
stud for sure. Speaking of studs, Danny canal is with us.
That's how he wants to be addressed. By the way,
this season, you must call me a stud on the year,
Dandy Canell's with us courtesy a bet online dot net.
And you know those guys that make the jump from
like Jacksonville State, for example, and then they dominate. I'm
watching the North Dakota State quarterback. Last night, Dick and
(14:39):
I were talking, Man, how does this guy not start
for a Power five football team?
Speaker 1 (14:43):
Because that kid's legit.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Washington's got a couple of guys right now, Danny that
are starting on the offensive and defensive line. All right,
they got one guy that played from Montana State, one
guy that played for Portland State. How much of a
jump is that going to be for those kids? And
how concern should we be?
Speaker 6 (15:01):
It's big, I mean, it's a big jump, But I
do I do think we take these guys because, like
you've scouted them, you've done your work. They a lot
of times, the offensive line is the hardest position to
get guys up to speed on and something like I
would rather go to the portal for players that are
elevated from an FCS level than go to true freshman
(15:24):
out of high school who might be four stars. You know,
Like it's just it's such a big leap. Your body
matures so much with a strength and conditioning program, there's
a bigger leap in IQ what you're expected to do
as an offensive lineman. So I do think like that
was the smarter move to make, and with how many
players Washington lost last year, either the draft or going
(15:45):
to Bama with Kaitlin de Borr. I think that's probably
the smartest thing that Jeed Fish and his staff could do,
was go tackle the portal and bring in players with experience.
And that was something that I saw with Florida State.
Mike Orvel did the same thing. The cover was kind
of bre he was trying to turn the program around quickly,
and he went hit the portal. And then and then
you start like next year, you'll balance it out, You'll
(16:06):
try to bring in some recruits and guys that you
can develop it. You'll hit the portal again a little bit.
So I do like that approach. I'm I will say
this now. You guys know I've been on here the
last few years. I like I like the debor higher
I was pretty bullish on Washington. I like their chances.
I think this will be a rebuild year for Washington clearly,
(16:29):
and I think Jet Fish isn't even to acknowledge that.
But I still think this will be a really good
year as a foundational year to start creating a culture
that Fish wants that'll be different than anybody else's. It's
his own team that will be, you know, a team
where I think they'll be more competitive than people think.
And in large part it's because of the schedule the
(16:50):
way it starts, because I like, you look at it,
they could easily start four to oh before they go
on the road to Rutgers and before you guys laugh
or before you think it's insult to say that they
could lose at Rutgers. Rutgers is going to be pretty
good this year, like they've got and going across the
country is not easy, and Rutgers is pretty physical. But
I also I also think Washington could win that game,
(17:12):
you know, and then all of a sudden they get
to the meat of the Big Ten schedule and it's
like all right. So I think the start, a strong
start is critical why they have gettable games. But I
do think jet Fish is a really solid higher. But
the one thing that makes me nervous is he was
hired so late in the game because that decision. Saban
retires late, like a lot of coaches. They get the
(17:33):
job December first, and they're hitting the ground running, they're
recruiting that recruiting class, they're hitting the portal. It was
such a late start. I think that's one thing that
you know is probably going to hold back the quick
turnaround for Washington because of just the way everything unfolded
so last minute.
Speaker 5 (17:49):
Well and Danny also their schedule in the first month
of the season also will help them gel a little
bit with all these with all these new players. But
I think they're getting under soul on the veterans that
are coming in as starters. We hear all of this
about returning starters, returning starters in college football, but these days,
isn't it more just about returning starters from any team
(18:13):
versus returning starters from your own team when you're prognosticating
a team.
Speaker 6 (18:18):
Yes, and I think it does matter the quality the
players and that we have to trust the scouting department.
But that's and this is where I think a lot
of high school recruiting has been crushed because of the
portal and because of this you know philosophy that we're
talking about right now. Yes, experience does matter, but that
and that's a huge, huge asset is the schedule because
(18:41):
like I mean, I'll keep going back forth to State.
It's what I'm most familiar with. And we were, you know,
week zero, they lost, but they had to play a
Conference opponent, and that's that was a tough game. They
didn't get a directional school, they didn't get an SCS
opponent where they would have been favored by forty points,
which a lot of teams have, and they kind of
get that continuity under their belt. Now they got to,
you know, adjust from the fly, and they have to
make some of those movements after a loss. You should
(19:04):
be able to push around these first you know, three
or four opponents. What Northwestern could be tricky, you know,
but I think they'll still win that game, Washington State
rivalry game, that could be tricky. But the first two
games specifically, that's when you kind of find out what
your guys are made of. You adjust the depth chart,
you get that continuity across an offensive line where communication
(19:25):
and you know, gelling together and figured it out ways
to work up to the second level and communicate pass
off players. That's that's huge. So I do think the
strong start is crucial. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Danny Kanal is with us on the radio show right
here on ninety three three KJR dot com. Excuse me
kJ FM courtesy abet online dot net d ninety three
three KJR dot com. By the way, if we're gonna
listen live. So let's talk about this Big ten a
little more. USC's got LSU over the weekend. Oregon's got
Idaho U c l A is obviously UCLA, and I'm
(19:57):
not sure if their fans even care. They're gonna wait
until Beast ball season. But the move to the Big Ten.
And there's a lot of bitter Washington State fans in
our city, by the way, that say you're gonna rue
the day you move to the Big Ten. You buy
that for Washington, No, not at all.
Speaker 6 (20:14):
I mean, first of all, let me say that I
hate to collapse of the PAC twelve. I mean, we
talked about this before. I think, like I just don't
think it was good for the sport. But you got
like Florida six. Yeah, I hate going back for State
because it's like such an easy one. Clinton, We'll use Clinton.
Clinton is suing the ACC to try to get to
either the SEC or Big Ten. That is a football
(20:36):
powerhouse that has won multiple national championships in the last
fifteen years, and they're like, how do we get to
the SEC or Big Ten. Washington had the opportunity to
do that and they jumped on it, and everybody else
would have that, not in the Big Ten or the SEC.
Those are when you say keeping up with the Jones,
the Big Ten and SEC are the Joneses, you know, Like,
so if you have the opportunity to be a part
(20:58):
of that league, which really is is determining and dictating
the future of college football, and they'll probably probably be
the last two standing. And I'm talking like ten years
from now. Like the sooner you can get in there,
the better. So I think it was absolutely the right
move and the only move for Washington make to jump
to the Big Ten, and for all of them, for USC,
(21:18):
UCLA and Oregon and Washington, all of them, Like, I
think it was absolutely the right thing to do.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
Well, it's a good thing that we're seeing college football
really try to dominate this Labor Day weekend now when
they're not fighting against the NFL for eyeballs. Do you
see this continuing in the future and maybe even extending
to week zero where college football's like, hey, we can
get two weekends where we can dominate eyeballs before the
NFL starts. Because of now the playoffs, teams might be
(21:46):
a little more interested in playing big time interconference games
because they can still lose three games if they're an
SEC or Big ten team and make the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (21:55):
You know, I great minds think alike. Because this past Monday,
it was Monday night and you know, NFL preseason was
in the books and there was like nothing on TV.
And I'm thinking, you know, it would be great right here.
It's a college football game, you know, or two, which
we do get on Labor Day Monday, right, so we
already get a Labor Day Monday night game, and you
(22:17):
can do it Sunday. I agree with you. I think
it won't take that long for the networks to realize,
Wait a second, we can get inventory there that'll rate
off the charts and that people will want to watch.
And I think you'll see, you know, it's just the
teams will probably be the hardest one. I know that
was a shock to the system when you see teams reporting,
(22:38):
you know, early July for camp because they have to
play Week zero. But you do get a benefit of
an extra bye week, which I think is healthy. But ultimately,
I do think I think college football would be foolish
not to take advantage of that Week zero to bring
more than just four games. And it doesn't have to
be as big as this weekend, even if it's just
double eight games is perfect. And then throw a Sunday
(22:59):
night the Monday that game on just like that, right,
and you just you take advantage more of the national
scene before the NFL gets cranked up and running.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Danny Canell with us courtesy at bet online dot Net.
I'm gonna give you a sleeper pick to win the
entire damn National Championship.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
And I'm not going to tell you the name of
the team.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
I'm just going to play one of my favorite clips
from one of my favorite movies, my cousin Vinnie.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
Ready, here we go.
Speaker 6 (23:20):
What is a Utah's.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
Got seventy percent of their guys back from last year.
They got like a ninth year starter in cam Rising.
I think they're going to run through the Big Twelve,
make the tournament. I think Utah's got a shot to
go all the way. Am I nuts?
Speaker 6 (23:36):
No, You're not nuts? Here's I like it. I like
it because I give you I'd like of all the
conferences that I've made preseason picks, who wins the Big Ten,
who wins the acc who wins the Big twelve, the
Big twelve? I feel the most confident that Utah wins it.
Now they still cold lose. There's some competitive teams in there,
but I think that this is a team that has been,
(23:56):
you know, a powerhouse in the Pack twelve with past
five years. Last year was a little bit off that
at eight win, but they didn't have Cam Rising, who's
back for his seventh year of college football. He is
their guy. They clearly were missing him last year. And
their defense is nasty. They've since twenty seventeen, they hadn't
finished below the top three in total defense within the
(24:18):
Pac twelve. They're gonna be able to have a defense
that plays. Kyle Whitningham is an extremely underrated coach. The
only caveat is where is that gap between them and
the top four teams in the country Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon,
Texas potentially BAMMA, But in a one game scenario, like
if the bracket goes, they can get on a little
(24:38):
bit of a favor Like let's say they played Penn
State Round one, which I think have a big fun matchup.
I could see that and if by the way, they
win the Big twelve, they get a buye, so like
they get they get that first round by so now
you're now you're kind of Now I'm opening my bet
online account looking at the man. Might have to jump
on this Utah bet because I do think then you
just have to hope you get to that one game
scenario and you could go toe to toe with one
(25:00):
of those big dogs and you could have a chance.
So I don't hate it, although I do think the
long shots are riskier than ever before because of the
strength of those top four, top five programs, the depth
they have, the amount of talent they have in the roster,
and the experience of being there before. I do think
that's a little bit risky, but I don't hate it.
I'm kind of jumping on the bandwagon with you on Utah.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
I'll tell you what. I will admit one of the
reasons why I do like it thirty three to one.
That's why, all right, Yeah, that big time value, big
time value.
Speaker 4 (25:29):
I don't know the last time of thirty three to
one one, the last chap ship.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
I mean, you have to go back decades, twenty decades
a different Now it's a twelve team player.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Everyone's got to do more to get there.
Speaker 6 (25:39):
LSU. LSU the year they wanted with Burrough because Burrow
was kind of pedestrians. They might have been twenty five
to one, Like, it wasn't that much different. They were
a team that nobody saw coming. So yeah, I think
it's I don't think it's like, if you're looking at
two hundred one long shots, you're probably throwing money away.
I don't think thirty three to one is burning money
like I think it's worth a shot.
Speaker 5 (26:00):
Danny, before we let you go, we don't have time
to talk about all these great games this weekend. But
if we only had time to watch one game this weekend,
give me the game, not only because of the you know,
the strength of the teams, but also the competitiveness of
how good you think the game's gonna be.
Speaker 6 (26:17):
All Right, I've been telling a lot of people in
this part of the country to watch Florida and Miami
just for the drama around it. I don't think it's
going to be the prettiest football. Like both coaches, the
loser is gonna be on the hot seed. Those fan
bases hate each other, the bragging rights, there's so much
at stake in that game. But I'll give you usc
LSU it's Sunday night. These two teams are kind of
(26:40):
mirror images of one another too. Both coaches have had
incredible careers, but they're missing the big one. They haven't
had that national championship. Both teams atrocious defenses last year,
so both of them fired their defensive coordinators. Both teams
are trying to replace Heisman Trophy winners in Kayleb Williams
and Jayden Daniels. Both teams have a lot of uncertainty,
(27:03):
and what we could see from this season the point
totals high, so people some fireworks, Like I do think
that will be you know, that'll be on display. You've
got a lot of unknown and I love the aspect
And it's hard to even say this now, but Big
ten versus the SEC. Now that USC is in the
Big Ten, I think there's a ton of compelling storyline.
I kind of like USC catching four points in this game.
(27:26):
I think it's going to be really a close game,
that's that's well fought, and I just it's in Vegas,
Like there's the spectacle of that and it's only game
on on Sunday night, Like, so what more do you
need more reasons? I think that game is going to
be so much fun. I can't wait to watch that one.
So I'll give you that one as a bonus one.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
I love it, Danny the Man, great stuff. We'll catch
up very soon. Appreciate this, pal.
Speaker 6 (27:47):
Hey, I'll give you guys my number. Just m me
anytime you guys have any time you want.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
All right, well, you know what, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
I don't want to upset the Apple card here, Pal,
It's a good deal for all of us, so I'm
not sure. Hey, we'll talk soon, buddy. Thanks manangs, all right,
go the game, you bet. Danny canal with us on
the show. We're gonna break a little factor excuse me,
factor fiction fun with audio. Factor fiction starts Tuesday. By
the way, no fun with audio. That's right, My god,
I totally forgot. I gotta get into football mode. Holy hell,
(28:14):
Lee Stirling our handicapper, we'll give us some wins for
the weekend, hopefully next on ninety three three KJRFM.
Speaker 8 (28:24):
We want to make a little Lextra pocket change for
this weekend. I do well, look no further than Paramount Sports.
Lee Sterly to tell you about Coley.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
It's been what nine months or whatever since this guy's
been on the air. You know, Lee and I started
doing this segment like twenty five years ago.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
You wear that.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
By the way, Tom Lee walked in here, say I
got a handicapper ell Or Miami. He keeps bothering me.
His name is Lee Sterling. And here we are twenty
five years later, and the guy who's still bothering me,
his name is Lee Sterling.
Speaker 4 (28:51):
He must be making people money.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
I don't know, man, Lee, how are you proud?
Speaker 5 (28:57):
You know?
Speaker 7 (28:57):
Tom Lee's son, Yeah, is baseball altomore in college and
he's like six four yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
Yeah, yeah. His mom is Billy Jean King. By the way,
did you know that.
Speaker 7 (29:10):
Right?
Speaker 2 (29:11):
No, he's a stud. He's a He's a stud baseball
player for sure. I think he got banged up, but
he is. He got his aleticism from somebody else besides Tom.
I can tell you that right now. But it's great
to have you back on the show.
Speaker 7 (29:22):
Thirty eight Tom May thirty eight pre.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Throws, thirty eight free throws over how many months? By
the way, how many How long did it take him
to make thirty eight? Lee Sterling's back with us from
Paramount Sports, Fired up every Friday at three forty five
to have you on the radio show.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Hopefully we can make people some money. This year.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Take Lee's advice, head on down to the Emerald Queen
Casino sportsbook in Tacoma and bet the games unless it's
a local game and you can't bet that one. Let's
start with LSU and USC in Vegas on Sunday. With
LSU given four and a half. What do you see
happening there?
Speaker 7 (29:56):
Who Thorgier coaches here? And think of Brian Kelly might
have the upper hand here. I mean he left Notre Dame.
He knew he couldn't win a national title. That's why
he ended up going to LSU putting it together. Now,
no Jaden Daniels, but they have a top five offensive line,
three guys on that offensive line, potential AWE Conference honors,
(30:19):
and they ran for six point two yards for Kerry
last year. And as we know, that's USC's weakness. Here.
USC is putting six new starters on the field from
different schools, from Bandy, from Georgia State, two each from
UCLA and Oregon State. I don't think that's going to
put too much fear in many teams. Lincoln Riley already
(30:41):
on his second defensive coordinator LSU thirty five to twenty four.
Speaker 1 (30:45):
Elliott's now Sharon Moore's team.
Speaker 5 (30:48):
I know he's got like level one or level two
violations already to start his career, but he's getting twenty
one for the Michigan Wolverines at home against Fresno.
Speaker 7 (30:57):
There's going to be summer qruession. They're going to lose
some games, but not this game here. Still rock solid defense.
They have a couple of guys on the defense will
be picked in the first round. They're going to probably
rotate quarterbacks, probably start Alex Orgy the first part of
the game here. See how that goes here. Fresno State
minus seventy six yards on average in mount West Conference
(31:20):
play last year. Mikey Keene is fine, but he has
a tendency on the road to fumble and throw some interceptions.
Here Michigan, they'll pull back a little bit, maybe in
the fourth quarter with Texas on deck, but sometimes you
got to late if you want to play at Michigan.
Thirty eight ten deck.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
I'm at Penn State and West Virginia and Nitney Lyons
given eight and a half against the Mountaineers.
Speaker 7 (31:44):
Everyone loves West Virginia. I mean this line started at thirteen,
it's down to eight. But this is a big brother
against a little brother. Penn State's won forty nine of
fifty games between these two teams. Drew Alar's he can't
beat the best means like Ohio State. Don't think he's
going to beat anyone real good. But he feasts on
(32:05):
teams like this three hundred and twenty five yards passing
in three touchdowns in the game. Last year they were
a twenty point favorite. They won by twenty three. Here
their ten wins, only one was by seventeen points or less. Year.
I mean the Mountaineers. Everyone talks about this great home
field advantage under Neil Brown. They're six and seven against
the spread as a home underdog. As League Corso would say,
(32:28):
not so fast. Penn State still thirty one, Okay.
Speaker 5 (32:33):
Our favorite team, the Oregon Ducks, giving forty four at
home against the Potato Heads.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
The Idaho Vandals.
Speaker 7 (32:41):
Dylan Gabriel, I mean he is perfect for this offense.
I mean, you had Jordan James, you got tedz Washington,
Texa A and m transfer Evan Stewart. He is lights
out if you know he decides to show up. He
has some great games. Some other games he doesn't do much.
But their defense, I mean what's going on? What did
(33:02):
one of your players do transferring to Oregon? That makes
no sense at all. That happened here in the state
of Florida. They turn feather the kid. The only way
someone messes up this team this year Oregon is someone
like Mario Cristobal. So Vandals lost all Big Sky quarterback
Gronnie McCoy here. Looks like either sophomore Jack Lane or
(33:24):
Jack Wagner from General Hospital will take over Ducks Romper
Room special sixty one ten.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
Sixty one ten.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
All right, you dubbed minus twenty seven and a half
against Weber State eight o'clock tomorrow. If you got Comcast
in Seattle, you won't get to see it as of
now because it's blacked out.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
Maybe something will change between down tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
But Husky's given a whole bunch of points against the Wildcats.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
What do you see?
Speaker 7 (33:49):
Well, rabbit ears work, I mean, this is ridiculous, no
going on?
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Well, no rabbit ears no, no, no, rabbit ears.
Speaker 7 (33:55):
I mean terrible. I mean the game is so tough
for people to see some of these games. Games Washington,
we know only six returning starters, eight potential transfer guys
are going to contribute here. Wea were state six and
five last year, but just nine starters return there. They
gave up forty to SCS champ Montana State lost this
(34:18):
got out stated and lost bad to Utah last year
by over. I think it's like three hundred and seven
yards and a thirty one to seven loss, and Utah
had no quarterback. May take Washington some time to come together,
but no look ahead next week with Eastern Michigan. The
original Will Rogers ran for president. I don't know if
you know this in nineteen twenty eight. If Will Rogers
(34:41):
lead this team to nine or more wins, he'll get
my vote in the twenty twenty eight election. Wow dogs
forty two ten.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
There you go. We Will Rogers watched the White House.
Then win nine games or more? Get her done?
Speaker 6 (34:52):
All right.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
Game of the week, Free play of the week Iowa
against the Redbirds of Illinois State.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
What do you got.
Speaker 7 (35:01):
First? Ten callers? Gonna get it for free? Eight hundred,
four hundred and nine seven one. I got to have
a great year. I am ready to go right out
of the gate. I got a wedding to pay for
next July. Wow, so uh, let's get it going. Did
you know about that Dave.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
Yet I think I did. Yeah, I think I did.
I thought we're keeping that private between us.
Speaker 6 (35:21):
Got it.
Speaker 7 (35:22):
Gotta get going, and I think it's gonna be a
great year. Thirty first year in business. We've had twenty
nine out of thirty winning seasons. You want to check
everything out other free pick videos. I mean there's games
like Mike Canes traveling to Florida. We've got Texas A
and M and Notre Dame Alabama. Check out all the
videos Paramount Sports Dockhm.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
I love it. Lee, You're the man. We'll talk in
a week.
Speaker 6 (35:44):
See if that good? Guys?
Speaker 7 (35:46):
You bet?
Speaker 2 (35:46):
Lee Sterling with his anaugural picks for the year right
there on ninety three three KJRFM.
Speaker 5 (35:52):
Five for five favorites LSU, Michigan, Penn State and Oregon
U dub.
Speaker 1 (35:58):
We'll see, we'll see five five favorites.
Speaker 5 (36:01):
I have a hard time believing that all those favorites
are gonna cover well.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
Check next week A four and one, three and two
not bad. It's three and two every week.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
And sorry for.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
That right now, say he's gonna be bad week. I'm
just saying we're we're not going perfect with all. Actually,
Dick just held up a sign that said idiot. During
that segment, we're gonna break Jerry Brewer, who is not
an idiot by the way.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
He will join us next on ninety three three kJ
