Speaker 1 (00:02):
That wasn't a good mood until I saw that guy's
face on TV.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
By the way, Oh, George Schultz says, your buddy, Yeah, yeah, you.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Know, I kind of feel bad for It's not his fault.
His dad is a jackal, you know. I mean, it
really is not his fault. It's an underutilized world. It
really is that going bat. To be totally honest with you,
I love both those words. But you know, imagine walking
around in an entire city hates your dad.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
That would suck, would suck. Well, that's how I mean,
That's how Dixon walks around. Oh God, everybody hates that fame.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Well, the Cougar fans. Dixon has changed his name, jos
all right, we got a big show, Rick new Heisl's
gonna join us, coming up at three twenty next segment. Obviously,
he was a part of some amazing Apple Cup wins,
including the two thousand and two game, the two thousand
and three game they had Washington State. You know, just
going back to those great Cougar football teams, they won
(00:50):
ten games in two thousand and two, ten games in
two thousand and three, and ten games in two thousand
and one. What do those teams have in common. They
lost every year to ud every single year to UDB.
Some of the greatest Cougar football teams of all time
lost to UDUB. And you and I have talked about
this that when Wazoo wins the Apple Cup, UDUB is
usually a bad team. Right, So if Washington loses this
game Saturday, what does that mean? Does that mean that
(01:13):
you a bad team if they lose the Apple Cup?
Because here's the thing. Historically they've beaten a bad team
at the end of the year, and we know they're
a bad team. That's right now. They're playing it in
Week three and we have no idea what this Husky
football team is all about. But I would just say this,
if you DUB can't beat the Cougars on Saturday, I
think there's a lot of reason for folks to wonder
if they can beat Rutgers, if they can knock off Iowa,
(01:33):
if they can knock off USC, if they can knock
off Michigan, if they can knock off Oregon teams like that.
So this kind of feels like that fork in the
road game. For now, we talked about it being the
Rutgers game. I think over the offseason we all thought, well,
that's the fork in the road. Game is Week five,
right right in New Jersey. For today, it kind of
feels like Saturday's that game.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Why are we looking at this game differently now than
we were before the season started, because I think it
almost feels like some are more nervous now than they
were three weeks ago, when I think the Huskies in
large parts, especially in the areas where we were most
(02:13):
concerned to have looked pretty darn good.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, I guess I was always slightly concerned about this
game anyway, because of the extracurricular stuff right that was
going on behind the scenes. And I mean I chalked
it up as a win when we did our preseason prognostications,
I chalked it up as a win. But I've always
been more nervous about this game than you have. And
maybe I'll be proven wrong. Maybe we come out and
(02:36):
just drill them on Saturday and it's not even a factor.
But I've always thought that you're gonna get an incredible
punch from Washington State. This is their super Bowl. They
are pissed off beyond belief. There are emotions involved in
this game now that just simply put we're not present
a year ago. I get your point that the Apple
Cup is always emotional. Washington State's always fired up for it.
(02:56):
If it's possible to dig a little deeper and find
a gear that watched Zoo did not even know they had,
if there's ever a year to find it, it's this
game on Saturday. Because of everything that they've gone through
and all the hate and anger towards Washington. Now that
hate and anger is not being represented with their fan base.
I mean, I threw this out today on Twitter that
I got a bunch of Cougar fans that aren't even
(03:17):
going to the game just don't care. That's right. I
was talking to Oh, I'll just tell you his name,
my buddy Cougar Bob Bob Bob Jans Sugar Bob, Cougar Bob.
And he's a I mean, he's a gigantic Cougar fan,
huge loves the Koobs. It's not going I said why.
He said three reasons. Number one, the game should be
in Pullman because it was in Seattle. Agree with that.
He's supposed to be in Pullman. Number Two, you're making
our students drive five hours across the state when they
(03:39):
should be staying home to watch the game in their stadium.
But who's making them? Why is you Dubbed making them?
I don't think you dub is making them do anything
but the man. I guess. Yeah, whoever agreed to the
deal which is partially Wazoo and their leadership wasn't pat
Chun on the job. Pat Chun was on the job
when they agreed to play the Apple Cup. And look,
just because your leaders agreed play a game doesn't mean
(04:01):
you like it right, doesn't mean you have to.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
I feel like the I feel like people are mad
at Washington, like it's Washington's fault that this game is.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
I think people are mad at Washington because they think
that Washington lit the match that started this whole fire,
and that this led down the road to all these little,
you know, side effects, which is the Apple Cup being
ganged out of Pullman put into Liman field. The third
reason that he gave me is because the ticket prices
are too expensive. I'm telling you right now, by Saturday morning,
ticket prices are gonna be in the gutter toilet. You'll
be getting in for twenty bucks on Saturday. I've been
(04:30):
telling you that for months. So if you want to
go to the Apple Cup venu Kings dot com. Just
check it out Saturday morning. There'll be plenty of tickets available.
And I get why Cougar fans aren't going. It just
doesn't feel the same. They're just not into it. I'm
into it. I can't wait till Saturday. I want to
rip their heads off and reach into their souls and
bring out their beating hearts and show them to them.
I mean, nothing has changed for me. As a matter
(04:51):
of fact, I might even feel more, you know, a
passion for this game that I have in years past.
But look, man, there's a lot of fans that feel
that way, and my buddy Cougar Bob is one of them. Well,
I just want to clarify something.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Just because I'm not as concerned as you about the
Apple Cup, Yeah, doesn't mean I'm not concerned. So and
so and I have a tangible reason and an intangible reason.
We'll start with the intangible because it's the biggest reason
of all.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
I mean, how many Washington.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Husky players that are going to actually play in this
game really have a good idea of what the Apple
Cup is all about? And can they really take their
game to the next level, like we know that the
Cougar players will take their game at the next level
because the Cougars have far more people that have played
in this game, that have lost this game, that have
felt the sting of losing in this game. Washington doesn't
(05:41):
have that. Washington has nobody, really hardly anybody that has
lost this game. And the only guys that they have,
the Cam Fabs and the Carson Bruners, that have lost
this game. They probably look back at that season like, well, yeah,
we were done that year anyway, So I'm not sure
it would h I don't think it hurt Washington nearly
as much to lose that game a few years ago,
(06:03):
considering the circumstance. Then it did game correct, then it
did for Washington State to lose that game last year
or the year before to Washington.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
But oh yeah, the four and eight team, I mean
it was they were they were as ready. But Carson
Brunner disagrees with you man. I mean he he started
or he was in his press conference a couple of
days ago saying he's still pissed about it, man, and
he brought it up you know, I mean unwarranted. I
I I nobody even asked him. He just he said
that game's well, this is Carson.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Brunner's job then is to make sure he does everything
he can totally get the rest of that team to
understanding of this game, which is which is great, and
then the tangible things materir, I mean, we haven't seen
a quarterback like this with no legs, not even close.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
The quarterbacks you faced have been terrible the first couple
of weeks. I think dual threat quarterbacks are a pain
in the ass, absolute pain in the ass, and you'll
see one on Saturday for sure. I mean, just think
about Johnnytteer. He wins the game, how big of a
legend does he become in Pullman? I mean, Gardner Minshew
is a freaking legend in Pullman and didn't do anything
on the field, right he lost you dub and the
Apple Cup he played in. I mean, obviously they're coming
off all kinds of different you know, off field situations.
(07:08):
But it doesn't take much to be a legend at
Washington State. And I'm not saying that could be a
I'm not saying that to be a smart ass at all.
I mean, but it doesn't good cool if Johnny Matteer
wins this game on Saturday. He's in, He's in, He's
Johnny Football, So yeah for them, butt load of the line.
Rick Newheiseel next on ninety three to three kJ A
(07:28):

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Your home for college football Saturdays is live with CBS
Sports analyst Rick Neuheiseel, powered by Taco Time. Hungry at
Taco Time, It's easy to create exactly what you're craving,
and we wouldn't have it any other way. How do
you Taco Time, customize your meal and order ahead on
the Taco Time Northwest Taco Time Time for something different
(07:53):
Now with Rick Neuheisel, here's SOFTI and Dick.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
All right, big fans of Taco Time for sponsoring this
shindig every single Thursday. Rick new Heidzel joins us on
the radio show as Tacotan Pick of the Week is
coming in a matter of minutes. Trying to get off
the oh and three starts to begin the two thousand
and twenty four college football season. You know what I
say about that Dick by the dip, Baby, that's by
the dip. That's right. Penn State almost lost to Bowling Green.
(08:19):
For God's sakes, never mind covering the thirty five Rick,
how are you? I am?
Speaker 4 (08:25):
Well, but you know what, I love that we go
to the negativity early because, as is the case with
many programs that find themselves facing adversity, we will face
it straight on and we will conquer it. We are
going to get back up on the horse.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
There's two things we're gonna do.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
There's two things a part of my thought process. Number one,
we can only go up from here for the remaining
fifteen bets. And then number two, if you get it right,
I'll be I'll be starting with that next week. All right,
either way, win or lose, because, let's face it, people
tune into this show not for your analysis. They tuned
in for your pick, all right, that's why you're here.
It's why Taco Time patients dos over.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Bowling Green was supposed to be a lock and yeah,
Bowling Green had different design un Bowling Green. The Falcon said, hey,
look we're going to take your a million and a half,
but we're also going to give you a game. Yeah,
and that's exactly what happened at Notre Dame as well
at the Northern Illinois.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Well, no question about that. We got the Apple Cup,
though on Saturday. And you know, Dick and I were
talking to Chris Peterson today for tomorrow's radio show. You'll
hear that at four o'clock and Chris was undefeated six
and oh. You were undefeated four and oh in the
Apple Cup. And you know one thing I want to
talk to Chris about is all you coaches always say
these games are always the same from week to week.
(09:43):
We don't change our process. No one game is more
important than the other. All those coaching cliches, blah blah blah.
Did you act like that behind the scenes for the
Apple Cup when you were here?
Speaker 4 (09:53):
No, because the Apple Cup meant so much to us
each and every season in terms of where we were
trying to get. I mean, the last year we played
the triple overtime thriller. We needed that win just to
have a winning record, right.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
We had to have that.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
We had to get ourselves into a position that we
were going to get the postseason and we were going
to have that keep the winning streak, winning record streak alive.
I think it was twenty five or twenty six years.
I mean, Washington needed that win. And by the way,
Washington State at the time was a top five, top
ten team and had a chance to get themselves not
(10:31):
only to the Rose Bowl, but also to a national
championship kind of conversation. So that monster game was just that,
a monster game for us.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
Here's what worries me as a Husky fan this week, coach.
It's not necessarily a talent on the field.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
It's I feel like the vitriol and the hatred towards
Wazoo has to be fabricated with these players because so
many guys have no idea what this rivalry is all
about on this team.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
How do you go about doing that as a coach.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
That's a great point, you know, these rivalry games are
a little bit different because of all the changing names
and faces wearing the uniforms, and especially given the fact
that Washington State has been given the bad card. They're
no longer in a conference. They're currently a member of
the PAC twelve, but the PAC twelve has two members now.
(11:26):
There is news today that four other schools from the
Mountain West are going to join the PAC twelve. But
it's just passing the buck as to who has the
bad hand in college football right now. So I agree
with you. The emotional feel for this game is going
(11:47):
to lie. The advantage for the emotion is going to
lie with not only the Washington State team, but also
the Washington State fans.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
No question. Well, listen, before we kind of dive into
the matchup a little bit, get to the weekend of
the Civil War went up as well. You mentioned those
games against Wazoo where that Wazu had a lot on
the line, and maybe nothing crazier than that triple overtime
game in two thousand and two. Close your eyes, Rick
and imagine where you were twenty two years ago, this
coming November, when this right here happened.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
Here's Keegel throws to the flat ball is knocked out, It.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Is intercepted, intercepted by ky Ellis in this game, if
the interception stands.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Is over ruling on the field because it was a
backward pass. Washington recovered that backward pass and the game
is over, Thank you very much. It is a dondale.
How about that? Okay, So I promised my favorite buddies
I would ask you on the record for once and
for all. Was it really a backwards pass?
Speaker 4 (12:50):
Was a backwards pass?
Speaker 5 (12:51):
One?
Speaker 4 (12:52):
It was a backwards pass, and Gordon Reese and his
crew got it right. And how much do you want
to hug Bob Rondo right now? How much do you
want to hug Bob Rondo and the voice of the
Huskies for all those great calls that he had over
those years. The guy was epic. I don't know where
Bob is today, but please give him my best Rick.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
I'm just trying to figure out what type of game
plan Jed Fish is going to pose offensively on Wazoo.
I mean, I think that the common thought would just
be give it to number one and get out of
the way, because Jonahole has been an absolute beast the
first couple of weeks of the season, and the Cougar
defensive line looks a little bit undersized.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
And I was talking to Greg Lewis about that. He says, no,
this is when you throw the kitchen sink at him.
You haven't.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
You haven't shown anything the first couple of weeks. You
just go air raid on him and throw for four
hundred yards. So how do you think Jed Fish is
gonna attack this game?
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Well, you're right that everything's available to Jed But the
facts of the matter, when you can run the ball,
you can control the game. And so he'll start with
a running game. But Will Rogers in his Air Raid
AID background, gives him great flexibility as to what he
wants to do to this team. And you want to
(14:06):
play a little keep away from Washington State given the
fact that their quarterback just ran for one hundred and
ninety seven yards against Texas Tech. So this is a
game like Jed's used to from his background in the NFL,
where time of possession is also a weapon.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Yeah, you know Steve Belichick's defense, is he more prepared
to face something like this because of his time in
the NFL? I mean, obviously a face guy's like Lamar,
You face guys like Kyler Murray, you know Russell Wilson
back in the day, and he's seen running quarterbacks before.
Does he have more of a kind of a treasure
chest of schemes to go to because of his time
(14:45):
in the NFL? Does that even matter in this game
on Saturday?
Speaker 4 (14:49):
If you go back to the Bill Belichick and obviously
Steve was there for the ride, If you go back
to the Bill Belichick era of taking away what you
do best, then that's going to be the equation here
as they try to cobble together a plan for Washington State.
I remember the Ram Super Bowl. I think the Patriots
(15:12):
won thirteen to three or something like that, and they
basically played zero coverage. But the safety who was attached
to somebody in coverage to make it zero looked like
he was playing cover one or playing center field. So
you never ever took shots like you were involved in.
(15:33):
You know, I get it out of my hand and
I can make big plays because of the ability to
play that. I think Steve will be much involved in
zero coverage so that they have an extra guy in
the box to accommodate the quarterback run game, and I
think they'll be ahead of the game in that regard.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
What can we glean, if anything, from the fact that
Washington's top three in the country in yards per carry
right now behind an offensive line that nobody knew who
any of these guys were three weeks ago. Can we
clean anything going against Eastern Michigan and Weaver State.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
Yeah, I think we have to pump the brakes given
the competition. But it's a great place to start because
it allows you so many things to do offensively, whether
it be run the ball, whether it be play action,
or whether it be dropped back with a guy who
has all these reps in his head and all these
pictures in his head over the years of air raid offense.
(16:26):
So Jed has the ability to cobble together anything he
wants in offense as it pertains, and it will help
the defense as he looks at exactly what they have
to deal with in terms of how important time of
possession is in this particular contest and in this game.
I think it's huge.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Yeah, Well, Rick new Heiseel's with us on the radio show.
What would your message be if you were Jake Dicker?
Honestly behind the scenes, what do you say to your
guys if you're Jake Dicker before this game?
Speaker 4 (16:55):
Listen, this is the Apple Cup. This is exactly what
we all look forward to each and every year. It's
an in state rivalry. It will be remembered for a lifetime.
But for our fans, not necessarily for us because we
were here, because we want to be here. For our fans,
this is an opportunity to say, hey, we're still here.
(17:15):
We're still here. We're not just subjected to whatever you know,
the television market says we are, or the pac twelve pack,
ten pack, whatever it is it says we are. We
have an opportunity to say who we are and this
is a great opportunity to deliver one of the great
gifts of all time to our fan base.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
Well, you mentioned the emotional advantage. I think you're exactly right.
It favors Washington State. But how long does that last?
Speaker 2 (17:41):
How long does Washington kind of have to just weather
the storm, the emotional storm early in this game before
it just settles down and becomes a football game.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
Well, this is where Jed has to kind of manage
what the message is to his team. Guys, you're going
to be playing a team that's coming in here like
a hornet snaps. They're going to be swirling around. I mean,
we have to be technical about our business in terms.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
Of you know not.
Speaker 4 (18:11):
I guess the way to say it is not so
much emotion as it is just absolute know how of
what we're doing. And this is a step along the way.
Everybody has said we're six and six, seven and five teen,
we can be much more than that, and this is
a step along that way.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Rick new Hazar with us Rick, before you get your
talk a time pick of the week, how much trouble
is Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame Honestly, I don't.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
Think it's trouble. I think he's young enough. But when
you go out and say, hey, we fell it into
this trap, that trap's been there forever. You have to
act like you know that and to just act is
if your players just bought into the hype, it's your
job to make sure that there is no hype. So
you can't spread any blame to the players.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
That's on you.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
This is an im hortant game.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
You know.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
Here's the problem with Marcus Freeman. It is so much
you know, did he have his team ready? It's did
he take the right quarterback? They played against Riley Leonard
he was the duke quarterback a year ago. They also
played against Kyle McCord led a comeback drive that went
down the field and beat him with Ohio State in
(19:23):
South Bend. Kyle McCord's throwing eight touchdown passes. Riley Leonard
has a you know, shoulder issue where he's listed as
questionable by the Notre Dame public relations public relations people.
This this to me is you better find a way
to cobble together an offense. Because Purdue, even though they
played Indiana State Hudson card went twenty four to twenty
(19:47):
five last time out against Indiana State, and if he
has any kind of day like that against Notre Dame,
you're in trouble again.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
All right, Rick, time for the Talk of Time pick
of the week. We got to get off the schneide here.
I'm going to go with a number eleven, the classic burrito,
the tator fries, and of course the fully leaded coke
because we can't do diet.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
So Rick, what's your Taco Time pick of the week?
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Holy smokes. I have gone up and down the schedule
of this week, and I think I'm just gonna be here.
Whenever you're struggling, you just go with a darn good team.
You just go with a darn good team. I'm going
to take Georgia over Kentucky.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Wow, Georgia over Kentucky. What's the line of that one?
Speaker 4 (20:31):
It is? It's like twenty two or twenty three.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
Let's see, Georgia is giving twenty three and a half
at Lexington. Okay, yeah, all right.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
I just think I just think the brock vandergriff is
an old Georgia quarterback. He was three for ten last week.
Something wrong at Kentucky. South Carolina is not that good.
I just think Georgia rolls.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Let's do it. Georgia minus the points against Kentucky is
Rick Neuheisel's Taco Time pick of the week. All right, man,
great stuff. Enjoy the weekend talk next Thursday.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
Miss coach, look forward to a gang See you you.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Bet Rick Neweisel with us Tiper Factor Fiction brought to

Queen Casino. It's Thursday, It's Dick Day. What do you
got big?
Speaker 2 (21:42):
I had a double check to see if he's right
on those numbers, and he was on what numbers? Kentucky
was six of seventeen for forty four yards passing last week.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
Not good.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
Holy smokes, all right, We're going with the Dallas Cowboys.
Dave Dallas Cowboys. I do not like to take big favorite,
but I'm gonna go with Dallas.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
They have had the most wins, believe it or not,
on the NFC of any team in the last three years.
And you know when they get those wins, they get
them in September and October. Five and two to start
last year, six and two to start twenty twenty two,
six and one to start twenty twenty one, and twelve
of those seventeen wins would have covered the sixth point spread.
(22:23):
Dallas is the bully that picks on the little kids
at school. Then when the football team comes in and
beats their ass in January, they could go crying back
again and they don't go to the Super Bowl. But
that's what Dallas is. They're the bully on the street.
They win in September, they win in October, and then
they fade at the end of the season. Give me
the Cowboys minus six and six and a half against
the New Orleans Saints.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
Cowboys at home. Six and a half against the Saints
is the select Shawn, you like to eat you text
in fact to hat it, text in fiction to four

to slip one by us. Dick, you weren't here doing

(24:03):
getting ready to tee off and wanted to kind of
pull one over on us, and we wouldn't let him
get away with it. Here he is Brett Boone, courtesy
of our friends at Venue Kings dot com. How are you, pal?
Speaker 5 (24:12):
Yeah, I didn't get away. I'll tell you what. You've
got my full attention. I'm not on the putting green.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
I I lost it. Well, I felt terrible, all right,
I feel terrible about it. Well, first of all, let's
just talk about where these guys are at right now.
Sixteen games left to go. Luis Castillo is going to
be out for a couple of weeks with the hamstring strain.
They're four out in the card, they're four out in
the West. They need to play four games better than
(24:42):
the Astros do. Simply put with one of those wins
against Houston to win the West. How probable, impossible, improbable?
Does this feel for them?
Speaker 5 (24:52):
Well, it's like we talked about last week.
Speaker 8 (24:54):
It's an uphill climb for sure, and I think as
hard as the wildcard, it's too tough because you've got
to jump leap from two teams and with the division,
it's it's you in Houston, and.
Speaker 5 (25:08):
Man, it's good.
Speaker 8 (25:09):
I'm I'm really interested in I think this is gonna
be an interesting series coming up with the Texas rankers
because it's not just your typical Yeah, Texas obviously happened
a down year. They're eight games out in the division. Uh,
nothing like a year ago. But this picture tonight, Kumar,
I think his name's Kumar Rocker interesting. You know he's
coming up tonight tomorrow. You're getting the debut.
Speaker 5 (25:31):
Of de Gram followed with Scherzer on Saturday night.
Speaker 8 (25:36):
So I think it's gonna be if these guys are on,
it's gonna be a pretty good test this weekend.
Speaker 5 (25:39):
It'll be interesting to see how the Mariners handle it.
Speaker 8 (25:43):
Good week win five and two, ten and I think
they're ten and eight under Danny since since that that
happened I don't know.
Speaker 5 (25:53):
I think so off to you at this point.
Speaker 8 (25:54):
It's just it's kind of Houston's kind of control. You know,
it's not a matter of did Houston win.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
We got a way.
Speaker 8 (26:00):
You just got to win games. You just got to
win tonight and then win tomorrow night and win the
next night. If you happen to look up and Houston
can get picked off by a few teams. I'm trying
to find every way for the Mariners to make it.
I'm looking at their schedule. Uh yeah, the Mariners schedule
is a little easier, if you know, if you really
break it down, Houston's Houston's got the Angels, but then
(26:20):
they got the pod rings and they got the Angels,
they got play seatle they finish up with Cleveland, whereas
you know, we've got we've got a bunch with Texas
and you finish with Oakland. So yeah, on paper, the
Mariners have a little easy, easier schedule. But we've seen
throughout the year, Uh some of the Mariners stretches. They've
gone with what we consider an easy schedule and have
(26:42):
it done so well and and uh that's when you
really got to be careful. So I don't know, I
think it's they got to put their head down and
just win games because it's in Houston's control.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
As long as Houston keeps winning, it doesn't matter what
the Mariners do.
Speaker 8 (26:54):
They won a day against Oakland, but Oakland had beaten
them yesterday.
Speaker 5 (26:57):
Uh, it's just one of those things.
Speaker 8 (26:59):
You're out of control. The only time you get in control.
And we talked about this when you get to Houston.
If you have it, if there's a three or less
game margin, then it's in your got the you got
the steering wheel. Until then, you just got to win games, Brett.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Every single month this season up until September, they haven't
had an ops of more than six ninety six. In
September it's seven eighty one. So what's changed in September? Oh,
Edgar Martinez is here? This is he making that big
a difference? What are you seeing from these at bats
that you didn't see before?
Speaker 5 (27:35):
I talked to Edgar.
Speaker 8 (27:36):
I called him the other night because I had seen
that the uptick in the office and the offense there
has been an uptick.
Speaker 5 (27:42):
And I said, I called him the other night and
he picked up, and I said, Edgar, you're the hero.
Speaker 8 (27:47):
You came in you're the miracle worker that I knew,
I've always known you are.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
And he's just started laughing.
Speaker 8 (27:53):
He said, Booty, I'm just trying to be as basic
as I can. We've got, you know, we've got a
really short window to do as much as we can.
And you know, he knows he can't come in there
and be a miracle worker. He's got to come in
He's just it's a it's a fresh face, it's something new,
it's something sometimes when you have a shakeup like this,
and I think that's why the move was made.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
You know, the.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
Deadline deal was made.
Speaker 8 (28:16):
We all thought it was pretty good considering what was
out there that didn't work out, and so they went
one further and they fired Scott Service in the middle
of the season, which is a shake up move.
Speaker 5 (28:26):
Let's be honest in that shake up. Sometimes I've been
on teams for that shake up. Sometimes it works, and
sometimes like.
Speaker 8 (28:33):
All right, fresh face, new start, even though every nothing's
really changed except for the guy that's making out the lineup.
But nothing's really different, but the change of atmosphere, the
chaos that kind of goes around it, sometimes that makes
a change and it makes a chance for the positive.
Speaker 5 (28:49):
A lot of guys on this team. It's not like
we've got a you know, a roster full of rookies.
Speaker 8 (28:54):
We've got a lot of grizzled veterans on this team
that have been around a long time and have done
it for a long time. Yeah, we have our mix
of young players as well. But these guys, it's just,
you know, it's it's not like this is, oh, this
is our bubblegum card and it's a year and a
half and there's not that big of a of a
test sample. No, these guys have had careers and like
(29:14):
I said, sometimes and Edgar Martinez walking in the clubhouse
as your as you're hitting coach, sometimes that changes it.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
Not only not only from a physical that Edgar might
be able to give.
Speaker 8 (29:26):
You his wisdom, his experiences, but just from a fresh
face and a press respected pase Ed Martinez.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
Yeah, Brett boone with us for a few more minutes.

since the Jerry Depoto story came out that he was
going to return. I think that was like six days ago.
(29:55):
What was your take on that when the report came
out that he was coming back next year. I mean,
do the players in that clubhouse even really give a
damn about stuff like that?
Speaker 5 (30:06):
Players really don't think about that. They don't think about that.
Speaker 8 (30:09):
I think at the end of the season, depending how
it turns out, there will be some reflecting amongst players,
and you'll.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
Think about it doesn't need to be a move made.
Speaker 8 (30:19):
But I also think as a player, and I always
kept this as one of my rules, it's it's my
job to show up and play baseball and it's not
my job to really comment on personnel and upstairs. Yeah,
amongst yourselves talking to your teammates, but from a public
perspective or anything like that, I've always kept that that's a.
Speaker 5 (30:40):
Private thing that's between players.
Speaker 8 (30:42):
Yeah, there will definitely be some discussions about the front
office and moves, and that all could depend on the
outcoming the season. Who knows, a week from now, there
might be a two game lead, and we're thinking a
little bit differently. If they were to find a way
to sweak into the playoffs. They could change the whole
narrative this year when an article comes out that what
else is the article going to say? At this stage,
(31:03):
we got to have all hands on deck and be
going for I'm sure if there was an article written
to the future of Scott's service a month and a
half ago, I'm sure it would have said, yeah, he's
our guy.
Speaker 5 (31:14):
For the rest of the way, and then things change.
Speaker 8 (31:17):
So I didn't expect anything other than the fact that yes,
we're going to go forward.
Speaker 5 (31:21):
We'll see how it pans out.
Speaker 8 (31:23):
And then you know, I had mentioned earlier, and I
think a couple of weeks ago, I said, if this
ends up being a non playoff, here again, I think
there's got to be a lot of people upstairs taking
a long look in the mirror and decide where are
we going with this franchise. But you've got sixteen games left,
lay it on the line. Worry about baseball right now,
(31:44):
worry about offseason.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
This off Julio went two for five, gdn't put in
the leadoff spot, they scored a bunch of runs, and
then in the last couple of games they've sent him
back down to the two spot, and he's zero for
nine with three strikeouts.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
So do you think we'll see Julio back in the
leadoff spot at anytime soon? Because it sure as hex
is the work when they put him there.
Speaker 5 (32:02):
Where is he tonight, that's a good question.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
I don't know if I've seen the light up tonight.
I did, Yeah, they I'll find it, Yeah, yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 5 (32:08):
I mean, it's interesting.
Speaker 8 (32:10):
It's interesting nowadays because oh, in past years, absolutely your
main guy lead ups, whole get hot, he's staying there.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
He's sitting second tonight second again.
Speaker 8 (32:22):
These days, it's a different animal. It's a different ball game.
It's a lot more matchups. There's a lot of more
analytical people on the job that have more input. Back
in the day, it was pretty much the hitting coach,
maybe a couple of coaches that were close to the manager,
and the manager they made that decision. So if you're in,
if they put you in the one two hole and
that worked out and you got a bunch of hits
(32:42):
and we're winning games, you're staying in that one or
two hole until things change different ball game four.
Speaker 1 (32:48):
No doubt, Booney, you're the man, great stuff. We'll see
where we are a week from now. We'll talk then
appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (32:53):
Man, Let's get some wins. Thank you guys.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
All right, Brett Boone with us say, if we had
any control over it, we'd get a win every night.
Speaker 5 (32:59):
We don't.
