Speaker 3 (01:21):
The question is, how are you? Guys? I'm fine?
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Have you ever sailgated to the Husky game before?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
I have not? That's on my bucket list. Well are
you sure?
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Are you coming up?
Speaker 5 (01:31):
I know somebody that hosts a cruise for every Husky game.
I might be able to get you on the boat.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
I will be there for the Michigan game. There.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Would you like to come with me on the boat?
Get them on the boat?
Speaker 3 (01:42):
There you go?
Speaker 6 (01:43):
That would be fantastic, although I will say it depends
on kickoff time because I'll be driving up from Eugene.
I'm going to go to the Oregon State game Friday night,
then come up for the Husky Michigan game.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Show because twelve thirty kickoff it might be tough.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Gotcha?
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Well, is this no, by the way, next Monday, we'll.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Know, gotcha? Is this just us delaying the inevitable and
talking about the Apple cop on Saturday as good? I
like that tactic by you. By the way, Well, let's
just go back to Saturday, John, There's a lot of
tentacles to the game on Saturday. The fourth down call,
the defensive breakdowns, the penalties. Jed Fish's reaction Saturday. Jedfish's
reaction Monday. What's important for you from your perspective coming
(02:26):
out of that game on Saturday.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
Well, a couple of things and one that you didn't
even mention. First, let me start with the fourth down call.
Rogers took one step to his right, and it was
clear to me.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
That play wasn't working. I mean, it was just bad
in every way possible.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
And I just was thinking, you got to put your
two playmakers right, Jackson Coleman. Give them a chance one
of those guys.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Give one of those guys a chance to make the play.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
And they didn't even do that, right because Coleman never
had a chance on that. The other thing, Fish's reaction,
you know, I thought that a great reaction accountability on
Saturday situation Monday was a little perplexing the way he
backtracked and.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Seemed to be blaming others.
Speaker 6 (03:18):
But the biggest thing that I took from that is
it was that was not the kind of reaction that
you would have gotten from Chris Peterson or Kalin de
boor It is the kind of reaction you might have
gotten from Jimmy Lake.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
And it just strikes me that it's not.
Speaker 6 (03:35):
A husky athletic culture type of reaction for the head
coach to kind of put the blame on the players.
I don't know if you guys made that connection at all,
then it was a very anti Peterson, anti Deboor response,
but that struck me.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
It's a very NFL response, to be honest with you.
A lot of coaches kind of tend to that in
the NFL. Some don't. Dan Campbell didn't do it after
the game this weekend, that's for sure, But I think
Jed Fish is running an entirely NFL in his mind operation,
and that's part of it. You can't get the job done,
then you're gonna be held accountable in public, and some
people don't like that approach. Obviously. It reubs folks the
(04:15):
wrong way. Some people for sure.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
Yeah, although I mean I think he did. He's the
one who didn't get it done. But the other piece
that I have.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Been thinking about is just Washington's bull math.
Speaker 6 (04:29):
That was a big game for them in terms of
getting to six wins. As I look at the schedule,
you know, you give them Northwestern and you give them
Ucla and that gets them to four.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Right, there's seven more games.
Speaker 6 (04:42):
They got to win two of those seven, and that
on the surface seems like, oh, sure, Washington should win
two out of seven.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
But man, there's a lot of hard games.
Speaker 6 (04:50):
There, a lot of tough road trips and a lot
of hard games.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
What do they look like a bad team to you, John,
Because let's face it, the teams that don't make bowl
games are just not good football teams.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Period.
Speaker 5 (05:01):
You go five and seven in college football, you're not
a good football team. Are the Huskies not a good
football team?
Speaker 6 (05:08):
I think that right now they are very much a
work in progress, which shouldn't be a big surprise given
the turnover and especially given you know, the reworked offensive line.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
We've talked about it before.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
The offensive line and the secondary are the two units
that need the most cohesiveness in order to function a
properly because the communication that's required and they have got
that offensive line's got rebuilt. I would say that I
was not If you had told me on August thirtieth,
Washington's gonna have some trouble in the Washington State game
(05:42):
with execution, I wouldn't have been all that surprise. But
the fact that they didn't have much trouble the first
two kind of I think probably led me a little
bit astray in terms of the level of execution that
I expected.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah, well, I mean, look, they racked up four hundred
and fifty yards. The problem was the stupid penalty. I
mean that's the issue that to me is the number
one reason why they lost the game, because they had
sixteen flags and they shot themselves in every body part
possible during that game. And I just kind of disagree
with Dick that I don't think they're a bad team,
but they may be a good team that may not
be as good as Iowa, Indiana, USC, Penn State, Oregon, Michigan,
(06:20):
and maybe even Rutgers. And that's the problem, right, is
that all those teams might be right where Washington is
if not a scoch better. So you know, this game
clearly was a fork on the road game. The Rutgers
game is a fork on the road game. The Indiana
game coming up might be a fork on the road game.
But I just wonder it's going back to your comments
(06:41):
about that fourth down playing about Jed Fish and all
that stuff. Do you worry about the locker room at
all coming out of a game like that? Like Greg
Lewis and Mario Bailey just talked about how you can't
let the Cougars beat you twice. If they come out
and look sloppy against Northwestern, there might be people that
are kind of alarmed about what they're seeing.
Speaker 6 (06:59):
Yeah, I mean, they caught a big break with the
fact that it's Northwestern and not any other team on
their schedule in that slot except for UCLA, Right, I mean,
if that's Rutgers, Iowa.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Michigan, Indiana, any of those teams coming up.
Speaker 6 (07:12):
This week, I think that there is a chance at
what the Cougars beat them twice.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
But boy, Northwestern is not any good. So even if
they're slot, I.
Speaker 6 (07:21):
Mean, the big thing now is getting the win, even
if you're sloppy. Even if you're sluggish in the first half.
You just got to get that win and then you
move on and it's it's kind of a little bit
of a new start at that point when you head
into you know, East the Scataway, which is gonna be
a hard game.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
But just get by any means.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
Necessary, get the win, and I think that will take
care of any issues in the locker room.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
But boy, this is a big week for them, there's
no doubt. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
I'm looking at the ESPN projected win tolls right now,
and they got the Huskies at a sixty six percent
chance to get the six wins. I think that's fair.
I think it's significantly more than fifty percent that they get.
But it sounds to me that you don't think it's
significantly more than fifty percent.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
I don't. And part of it, too, is with the trips.
Speaker 6 (08:11):
Right they're going to Rutgers coming back from Michigan, then
they're going to Iowa, then they get the break, then
they go to.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
It Bloomington and Indiana's pretty good.
Speaker 6 (08:19):
It appears I'm back for sc Then they got to
go to State College. I mean that's hard. I think
that that's tough. The buy is pretty well placed for them,
but the fact that they are going they have these
home games sandwich between the long trips. I think it's
just gonna be harder, and I think it's that's the
same way for a bunch of the West.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Coast teams, right, But man, Washington, they've.
Speaker 6 (08:43):
Got a lot of the middle tier Big ten teams
on the road, and that you know, Rutgers, Indiana, Iowa.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
That's tough.
Speaker 6 (08:53):
You want those games at home. You want the easier
games at home, not the road games. That makes them
that much more tough.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Right right, John Waters with us courtesy is simply Seattle.
How about the other side for the Kougs out there,
should they be thinking twelve team playoff?
Speaker 6 (09:10):
The only I think the only way they can get
to the twelve team playoff is if they're undefeated. I
don't think even at eleven and one with a win
over Washington, I don't think they're getting in. I just
think that the big ten in the SEC will squeeze
them out somehow. But could they go twelve and zero.
I mean, if you look at their schedule and you
handicap it, they're probably favored in every game except Boise
(09:34):
on the road, so you can I think that game
is in two weeks, so that is a huge tape
for them. If they come out of BOIS and they're undefeated,
then you probably have to start talking about it and
what a story that would be.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
What type of team did the Cougars look like to you?
Because I mean I saw a Husky team that basically
across the board had better statistics other than the penalties.
So did you see a Cougar team that was better
than the Washington team? Because I don't think anybody be
saying that if the Huskies would have scored on the
last play.
Speaker 6 (10:07):
You know, I certainly thought, well, I've seen some stuff
on social media that Washington deserved to win. I'd disagree
with that completely. I thought Washington State deserved to win
the game. I thought they played better, smarter football. I
was pretty impressed with Matier, especially in that environment. I
think what I think of Washington is it's a good
enough team to win ten or eleven games against its schedule. Now,
(10:30):
if you put if you put the Cougars back, if
you reform the PAC twelve this year, where do I
think the Cougars would fit. I don't know, fit six
something like that probably, but against their schedule, you know
they got a chance to get the double digit wins.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah, you know, it's funny Dick mentioned the ESPN sixty
six percent thing. I'm just going game by game. After
the Northwestern game, so there's there's eight games left to
go after this weekend. There favored the UCLA game and
their little matchup predictor, you know, the other one game
in the final eight where they're predicted to win by ESPN.
You know what that game is. Michigan, Michigan. That's it.
(11:07):
Michigan is a very good Yeah. No, I mean I
think you deb's got a shot to be Michigan here
in a couple of weeks. John, how stunned would you
be if Washington got to five and one, which is
where a lot of people thought they would be. But
just get there a different way?
Speaker 3 (11:22):
You will asking me?
Speaker 6 (11:24):
Now, Yes, not that stunts, because I've seen Michigan multiple times.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
And you're right, they are fairly average.
Speaker 6 (11:32):
If you had asked me that on you know, August thirtieth,
I would have said, pretty surprised. But the Wolverines are
not very good, and we'll see we'll get a little
bit even better field this week, right, because the Trojans
are going in the Big House, and if they gonna
take it to them, you'd have to like Washington's chances
even more.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
I mean Michigan.
Speaker 6 (11:52):
That will also be Michigan's I believe you've first road game,
if I'm not mistaken, and that's you know, so whichever
quarter they're playing at that point, it's their first road game,
and that that's certainly an advantage for the Huskies.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
Six point nine wins right now projected from Michigan cour
to ESPN. So yeah, that is bizarre. John tell Us,
who's next in the this reformed PAC twelve? Who are
the next two teams coming in? Because they got to
get to eight, right, they got.
Speaker 6 (12:22):
To get to eight at least within this by the
summer of twenty twenty six. They're gonna take a look
at a Memphis. They're gonna look at Tulane, Texas, San Antonio,
maybe Texas State, maybe South Florida. Right they you know,
some of the good schools in the American makes sense
for the PAC twelve because one mecaps the American and
(12:43):
also it adds some time zones for kickoffs. But I
think ultimately there's a pretty good chance that the last
couple of spots will be filled by maybe a UNLV,
maybe air Force. It remains to be seen, but that's
kind of the group of schools that they're targeting. And
I think we probably have got a couple of weeks
until the next wave, at least a couple of weeks,
(13:06):
but we'll see how it plays out.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Okay, So how much better of a situation is Washington
State and Oregon State and today versus six months ago?
Speaker 6 (13:15):
Like a one hundred times better because I did never think
that the ACC or the Big twelve was reasonable for them,
And so now they have stability. They know where they're
going to be starting in twenty twenty six. It's gonna
be a it's gonna be a decent football conference. Right,
those are some pretty good schools, and they can go
(13:37):
out and get a TV deal and it just gives
them a sense of security. I think they've got a home.
There's no more uncertainty about where they're going to be.
So in that regard, I think they're in a much
much better position. They got to go out and they
got to get a TV deal that will pay them,
you know, a decent amount given their situation, which is
(13:57):
probably about ten million per year. Per school, they still
have got a long, hard road. But for if you're
a Cougar Beaver, though, you know you got a pretty
decent path into the college football Playoff out of this
reform PAC twelve.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Well, let me ask you this. You said that for
Wazoo to think about the playoff, they got to go undefeated.
Let's let's say they go ten and two whatever, pretty
damn good year. What does that do to Jake Dickert's
value as a head coach around the country. Where does
that do to his his resume? How how sought after
could Jake Dickert be? You think after this year?
Speaker 6 (14:32):
I think that the Cougars are going to have to
start ponying up if that's the case they want to
keep him.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
Now, he's going to feel a lot of loyalty to them, But.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
You know, we've seen a mid Midwest guy that that
certainly will be an issue for them.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
But I think they would take that trade if they
could get.
Speaker 6 (14:49):
Tenant ten and two this year when they're trying to
be relevant in this transition situation, they may take it, right.
I mean, that's that's the calculation you got to make.
That's what happened to Oregon State last year they had
a really good year, lost Jonathan Smith, whereas Washington State
was mediocre and was able to keep dicker John.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
I don't have seen this quote yet.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
It just came out within the last half hour from
Dion Sanders as his press conference today. I'll just read
it to you. He said, once upon a time, you
guys never attacked college players. Now they're making more money
than y'all, so some of y'all are envious and jealous
about that, and you're on the attack. How much validity
does he have to that statement.
Speaker 6 (15:29):
I have no idea what he's talking about. Well, is
he talking about somebody that went after one of his kids,
a media member who I think he's just.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
Talking about being critical of media being critical now of
college athletes when they weren't before because they weren't getting paid.
But he's saying the attack is because they're making more
money than the media members, so they're jealous.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Huh. Has he ever seen media in the.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Sec Yeah, that's preposterous. Absolutely, I don't.
Speaker 6 (16:00):
I don't sense a big change in the criticism, to
be honest, from the media now. The media has changed
of certainly in the last five ten years.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
But I don't think the treatment.
Speaker 6 (16:13):
Of college players is noticeably worse in the last twenty
four months since they started really getting paid.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
I mean, how do you how do you measure that? Like,
watch college game Day and just see what they said.
He's talking about because the fans, the fans, I think,
have come out a little hot. Like I know that
Florida State's barstool account after Florida State's second loss, put
a picture of Dju and just called him ass on
social media. You wouldn't have seen that three No, you
would not have seen that three years ago. But the
the other part of the d On thing for me
(16:42):
and I just think he's a fat hypocrite. I mean,
this is a guy that was ripping players on social
media like six months ago, and now he's ripping I mean,
what the hell?
Speaker 6 (16:51):
Sure, and he's thrown his offensive line under the bus
multiple times.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
But the thing is the.
Speaker 6 (16:57):
Barstool like, is that is that media? I mean, that
is a type of media, but it's not their traditional
legacy media with you know, real reporters, So you know
that's what you That's why it's hard to it's hard
to figure out what he's talking about.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Yeah, media, right, John Before you go Willner's winner. We
got to get the wind Lorian back on track here.
Gave us a couple of picks last week, beaves, and
the points did not come through dogs, and the points
did not come through one and two on the year
so far, you stunned the college football world and grabbed
cal and week one against Auburn. So let's get back
(17:36):
in the win. Colm, what do you got this week?
Speaker 4 (17:38):
Baby?
Speaker 6 (17:39):
You know I'm going with the Cougars taking a trip
through Letdown City. I will take San Jose State Friday
night in Pullman.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
Wow. All right, Santa's twelve Spartans plus the twelve in
Pullman on Friday night on the c W, he says,
take San Jose.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Well, is the party?
Speaker 6 (18:01):
The party is gonna still be going in the Apple
on Friday night.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Yeah. And Jake Dickard says he may never give the
Apple Cup trophy back, by the way, even if they
lose next year. Is he gonna take it with him
to the SEC when he goes there? Oh god?
Speaker 4 (18:15):
All right?
Speaker 3 (18:16):
You know what?
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Good for the Yeah? Good, no question, no question. They
earned it, all right, John, great stuff. We're talking a
week man. Appreciate it, pal.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Thanks guys, all right, he likes San.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
Jose State and the points against the Cougars on Friday,
we'll get a break. I gotta hear more about that
Dion Sanders quote as well. Seahawks and Dolphins. Big news
coming out of Miami next on ninety three three kJ
R FM.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
Live from the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio.
Now back to Softie and Dick on your home for
the Huskies and the Creaking Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
All right, Major League Baseball scoreboard update for all of us.
Still passengers on the Believe Bus. Getting kind of lonely
here though, I do think Dick Fane's got one finger
on the Believe bus. This body maybe off the bus,
but he's got a fingernail. You're scratching the outside of
the bus. See this, This is what is this? A
fingers is a fist. That's a fist.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
This is a fist hanging over the table right now
that I am ready to pound on the table. When
the Mariners finish one game out of the playoffs, which
is exactly what I think is going to happen.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Can you bet that, by the way, like how many
games out they'll finish No, I bet. I mean, you
can't go that deep.
Speaker 5 (19:25):
They are gonna suck almost everybody back in, and I'm
and you know I'm ready.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
I'm in.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
No, I'm admitting right now I may be one of
the suckers that get sucked back in, but I have
not been sucked back in yet.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Let me ask you a question, why would you not
be sucked back in? If they're a game out with
like four to play? I mean, I can see, you know,
one out with one to play or fine, but if
they get to one out, hell, one to play, I
mean at that point, like, who cares how they got there,
They're one hour, one to play. Finished the season with
the A's. You're talking about one game, right, I mean
if they need one win at the end of the
(20:00):
I mean, I just you gotta be get dope at
that point to not be excited if you're a game
out the hell.
Speaker 5 (20:07):
I just think the most Mariner situation m hmm is
to finish one out and they win one or two
against the Age instead of sweeping them.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
And that's why they don't the most Mariners. Guy, guys,
Sweeping anybody is hard in baseball. I don't care who
you're playing right, So if you need a sweep and
you win two of them, that's not as big a deal.
If you only need like maybe one and you get swept,
or you need to and you win one, that's where
I think you're like, what the hell is going on here?
(20:36):
But here's the update. Twins up on the Guardians two
one bottom seven. Not great news, but still in the
seventh inning, Tigers and Royals one to one, top of
the fourth and the Astros getting going the night at
six forty? Will you please read that Dion Sanders quote
to me again that you read to John Wilner, because
I want to talk more about this. I don't know
what the hell he's talking about. Him kind of with John,
explain that to me.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
He starts with, once upon a time, you guys never
attacks college players. Now they're making more money than y'all.
Some of y'all are envious and jealous about that, so
you're on the attack.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Okay, So what I'd like to know from Deon? If
I were there at the press commerce, I would say, Okay,
let's fine, Deon, give me an example. What are you
talking about? Who? What writer? Radio? Social media? Like? Can
you please quote what you're talking about like when people
always say, you know the media, Okay, who who in
the media? What person? Deon Sanders says he's hearing criticism
(21:29):
from media members, correct towards college football players. Who are
you talking about? And if you cannot quote somebody, you
are a liar and you're full of crap. That's what
I would say to Deon Sanders, because Dion Sanders has
a phenomenal talent for keeping his football team in the
media at all times. I mean, let's face it, what
(21:51):
did they really do over the weekend? They beat Klorado State?
Who cares right when it's all said and done, Okay,
But everybody's talking about him because Shador Sanders refuses to
shake hands with the opposing quarterback, and now they're head coach.
Three days later comes out and says the media is
mean to players. So here they are again in the
press and two fifteen hundred miles away, adults like you
(22:14):
and I are talking about him. So what does he
mean by that? Who's he talking about? Because I would
say Deon number one, if you can't give me an example,
I don't believe you. I think you're a liar. And
then number two you're saying that people in the media
are going after college football players. Oh, like you did
like four months ago, same thing on social media when
(22:34):
you rip that guy on Twitter. So he is an
absolute giant hypocrite. Okay, he's becoming kind of a clown,
to be honest with you, but he does a phenomenal
job of keeping them relevant. It's amazing.
Speaker 5 (22:48):
I think maybe that you brought up the best example
to John Wilner. I mean barstool is I mean Barstool
is followed by a lot of people. I mean it
may not be the Washington Post, but it's followed by
a lot of people, and a lot of people take
the barstool and their opinion seriously. And when they just
flat out called dj.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
Ass So that's the final state Barstool people, not like
Barstool Sports. It was retweeted by all barstools. So the
way that works is they've got all these little affiliates
across the country, these people and guys in galas and
a lot of them are college students. By the way,
Like I've met the kid that runs the barstool Husky account.
(23:28):
He's a great kid. He doesn't work for like barstool.
They just let him kind of have the name, right,
But there's all these different accounts that are run by
twenty year olds and they're using the Barstool name. So
Florida State, it's the same thing. I have no idea.
Maybe some are that there's some checks and bats. Maybe
some of Barstool well maybe some of the bigger schools
actually get paid by them. I have no idea. Maybe
(23:49):
on an individual basis, But I mean, if you're Barstool,
I mean, do you care that they're calling DJ angle ass?
Probably not. That's kind of their mo and kind of
what they do. But look, the guy's making a lot
of money to go play football for Florida State. You
and I said this would happened, absolutely, that when players
started making money, they'd be treated more and more like pros.
Everything they should they should.
Speaker 5 (24:10):
I have got zero problem criticizing college athletes anymore, zero, right,
And I used to be I used to like tread
really lightly.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
I'm like, Okay, this guy got beat.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
I'm like, eh, but but not anymore, especially the ones
that I know that are making a lot of money.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Yeah, I guess that's the thing is you don't really
know who's making what. There's no like spot track for
college athletes. Maybe there should be you know, to tell
me who's making what and how much guys are getting paid.
But to be for an example, how about great Osi
War this year? Right?
Speaker 5 (24:35):
What if he has a terrible game and they lose?
You know, I mean that, you know, you know he's
making a lot of money.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Well, and look, I mean obviously it just comes down
to what kind of person you are, what your style is, right,
Like calling a guy ass anyway, or calling a guy
garbage anyway, or calling a guy trash, or calling a
guy a jerk or a blah blah blah. Some people
just don't do it period. I kind of try to
reserve that for guys that I know are just you know,
for lack have a better term pricks. Jamal Adams, right,
(25:04):
I mean Jamal Adams is a great example of that.
We go after a guy's wife, you lose all credibility
with me. Right, I have no idea what kind of
guy DJ you is. He might be a great kid,
for all I know, he might not deserve that. He
might be trying his ass off. And if somebody offers
you a bunch of money, you're gonna take it. My
question for Mike Norvell in Florida State. What did you
see from him when he was at Oregon State that
(25:25):
led you to believe he could throw the ball. We
saw him play. He can't throw, and yet he's your
savior down there. So dude, it's crazy how much this
landscape has changed. All right, Brian Schatz are gonna join
us next on ninety three three kJ RFM B from
the R and.
Speaker 1 (25:41):
R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio. Now back to Softie and
Dick on your Home for the Huskies and the Kraken
Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
I wonder if Fran's got this on his ringtone for
his cell phone. Such a good song. So, Brian, what
do you think make this the ringtone for your cell.
Speaker 7 (26:11):
Phone only when you call Softy?
Speaker 2 (26:16):
You know what, I appreciate the honor. I'm gonna call
you every night at like four am just to wake
your ass up. You wake up that down all right? Well,
first of all, there you go, congrats on a win
over Kansas City. A win is a winning this league,
no matter who you play. After watching the tape and
breaking that thing down, what were you most pleased with
(26:37):
after a two nil winover Sparting Kansas City.
Speaker 7 (26:42):
Yeah, a team that had had given us some troubles
last year came in here and we resurrected their career.
They'd lost like ten in a row, and you know,
we gave them life. We didn't want that to happen again.
So super happy that the two local guys got on
the board, Jackson Reagan and Paul Rothrock. And super pleased
(27:05):
that we actually scored another goal that was called off side,
but had you know, our highest expected goals of the
season in that match.
Speaker 4 (27:14):
So good, good on the offense.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
And Steph Fry one hundred and thirteenth career shutouts Loan
all on second place in league history. So just kind
of reflect what Steph has been able to accomplish in
this unbelievable career.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
Is Yeah, it's been a great career.
Speaker 7 (27:32):
You know, I used the same line in Columbus that
I did at home. Usually I don't say it at home,
but you know, I challenged the guy to keep a
clean sheet, you know, and that way you're going to
guarantee at least one point in a draw or three
points way if.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
You score a goal.
Speaker 7 (27:49):
And you know, the team was responded the team responded
really well. Steff made some big saves, you know, a
couple of big saves early in the Sporting KC game,
and you know it was really really good to watch,
fun to see.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
Yeah, you know, I'm trying to figure out. I remember
how old Casey Keller was when he retired, by the way,
but Steph's thirty eight years old. What I mean, he
was forty. I think you're right, so he's he's kind
of getting closed. I have no idea how much longer
Stephan Fry wants to do this for. But he's got
a really great standing in this community, you know, upstanding
member of society. I think we need to ruin that
(28:24):
and tell an embarrassing story. So if you're if you're
if you're roasting Stephan Fry one day, what's the first
story that you would tell, do you have one?
Speaker 4 (28:34):
Well?
Speaker 7 (28:34):
I would I might tell a story about how he
even came to us, because.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
Look, nobody really wanted Steph Fry.
Speaker 7 (28:42):
You know, when he was coming out of Toronto, he
you know, he had had an injury, a significant injury.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
He broke his ankle. You know, Toronto was a mess.
Speaker 7 (28:53):
I mean, it wasn't all Steph doing, but they were
they were a dead franchise. And I think he has
goals against average that last season when he was at
Toronto was just huge. But vickymd had scouted him at
Cal and you know Tommy Doucher watched him on film
and you know, Ziggy and Tommy made the decision.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
And what a good decision it was.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
God, you're talking about Steph Fry like he was like
the unwonted third child. You were a mistake, you were
an accident, you were never even supposed to be here.
You got to save those lines for the ross man.
That's awesome.
Speaker 5 (29:27):
Look at him now, Hey, coach Pedro de la Vega
came off the bench. How are you integrating him? Is
he going to start this weekend or this tomorrow for
the game?
Speaker 7 (29:36):
Well, I'm gonna yeah, I'm gonna give you a pretty
well it's not really a scoop dick, but yes, he
isn't going.
Speaker 4 (29:43):
To start the game.
Speaker 7 (29:44):
I think I made it pretty clear just by the
substitution pattern. He's ready to start another game and we're
excited for that.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Well, yeah, you and I have talked before Brian Schenzer
game with us about how much at least. I just
can't stand the international stuff because you're you're just sitting
on pin and needles, crossing your fingers, holding your breath
that your guys don't get hurt. And that's exactly what
happened to new who didn't play over the weekend got
hurt with Cameroon on international duty. Here we go again.
I mean, you're just relying on somebody else to take
(30:12):
care of your guys. Is he okay?
Speaker 7 (30:15):
He is okay, softy heel. He's going to feature in
the game as well, wink wink, And you know he's
he's he's fine. We had to rest him just out
of precaution. Uh. And you know, Reid did a good
job when he came in there read Baker Whiting and
so we'll be back to pretty much full strength.
Speaker 5 (30:33):
And Joe Paulo's got the calf, So if you're getting
back to full strength, maybe that's a scoop on Joe.
Speaker 7 (30:38):
Paulow that's the only yeah, that's the only one that's
you know, when I just said that, Dick Gil Paulo
is the last one. You know, he's obviously an integral
part of our team, but you know he's the last
one and you know everybody else's feeling pretty good.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
Well, you mentioned not giving Kansas City any hope, and
here comes San Jose. I mean, honestly, I think if
you guys lose, I'd fire your ass after that games.
I mean they're just terrible. I mean, by far that
the worst team in the league. Twenty one losses, two
draws and five wins. You can't give these guys any
hope like you did Kansas City, Right, So what makes
(31:13):
these guys dangerous tomorrow?
Speaker 7 (31:16):
Well, they've got a guy a Spinoza who's pretty good,
and then they went out and spent like six seven
million on a guy by the name of Lopez, really
crafty player. I mean, look, they've struggled all year long, softy.
I look, I wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (31:31):
I wouldn't.
Speaker 7 (31:32):
I wouldn't be sad.
Speaker 4 (31:33):
If you know, I got fired.
Speaker 7 (31:36):
After that, because you know, we should beat them. But
it is a trap game. It is a trap game
in some ways. I've got to make sure that the
guys understand that they have to come out. You know,
the only knock on the Sporting KC game was it
took us ten twelve minutes to kind of get going.
I need them to write when the wor three blows
the whistle, they need to start playing against San Jose.
Speaker 5 (31:57):
Well on their coaches right here from the two o six.
You know him well, Ian Russell, you dub guy from
West Seattle. You got some got any good interactions, some
stories you can tell about Ian Well.
Speaker 7 (32:08):
I remember watching Ian play tough, hard nosed player. His mom,
Phoebe was the secretary of Seattle Youth Soccer Association. His father,
Dave was a you know, instrumental coach in the youth
leagues around here when I was growing up. So really
good family, really happy for him to get a shot.
(32:30):
I mean, he's been with that franchise for a long time.
I don't know if he's going to be their final choice,
but certainly a great guy. And you know I wish
him well other than tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
Yeah, I got to ask you, man, because I remember
the last time I got fired. I was twenty years
old and I got whacked by Red Robin in Bellvue.
I was already an intern at KJR, and my manager said,
you got two choices. You can leave or you're fired,
And so I said, to fine, I quit and I
went to work at this radio station thirty years ago,
you were the coach of the USL Sounders. Didn't get
fired there, yep, went to work as an assistant for
(33:05):
the MLS team. Now you're the head coach.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
Have you ever been fired from anything in your life?
Speaker 4 (33:11):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (33:14):
Man, see that's a good question.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Restaurant job, bartending, newspaper delivery?
Speaker 7 (33:20):
You know, you know the only thing was you know
there was a construct because I look, I used to
work construction after my playing days, and yeah, I remember
a job where the people weren't happy with what we
were doing and they and they fired me. So yeah,
I've been fired. All right, I've been fired once. I've
been fired one.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
Okay, good, well, let's just make it once and keep
it once for the rest of your life, man, because
I want you going out when you do, go out
on your own terms. All right, listen, good luck tomorrow,
kick their ass and we'll talk in a week.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
Man. Appreciate it, coach, Take care of guys.
Speaker 5 (33:50):
Man.
Speaker 2 (33:50):

courtesy of our friends over at Taco Time for all
the catering options. Jump on the web and check out
Taco Time in w dot com. It's our pal, steven Susa.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
How are you man, I'm doing great, man. It's good
to be back on the show.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
To you guys, Well, we appreciate you doing this and
adjusting your schedule. Works out good because the Mariners have
a gigantic series aring with the Yankees tonight with Brian
Wu against Luis Galen. Why don't we first of all,
before we kind of get into all this stuff and
how things went in the last series and how things
will go starting to night against the Yankees. Where is
the Stevens sues a faith meter at in regards to
(35:16):
the Mariners making a playoff run. We sit here with
twelve games left to go. They're essentially three games out
behind the Twins with the typebreaker going to Minnesota. Tigers
are a half game up on the wild card race
as well, they're four out in the West. What do
you think these guys got a shot.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
Or what they got a shot? For sure? You know,
my faith meter is right smack dab in the middle,
maybe a tick higher. It's definitely higher than last week.
And I'll tell you why. I think what makes it
difficult obviously is the amount of games left and the
fact that Detroit and Minnesota both have the tiebreakers over them,
(35:55):
and so that's going to make things complicated. But look,
they played the Rangers really well. And I know the
Rangers haven't had a good season, but they faced Kumar Rocker,
Max Schures are Jacob de Gram and Andrew Heaney in
those series, and those are really good pitchers, and they
did a good job grinding out at bats and So
this series, to me is is gonna be everything. If
they can come out of this series and they can
(36:17):
win this series, and and even on a tough thing
to do, sweep the series, they're gonna They're gonna make
the playoffs. I fully believe that. But if they don't
win this series, it's just gonna be really difficult, even
with the Astros coming in and some of the future
in their hands.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
You look at these September numbers, It's it's ridiculous. I mean,
they're third in runs scored in September in baseball, they're
second in OPI as their fourth and batting average.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
So what has it been.
Speaker 5 (36:45):
Is it more what they gained in Edgar and Dan
coming in or more what they got rid of in
Scott servis?
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Uh? You know, I think it's both right. I think
the way that Gang communicates to these guys, from what
I heard, is just it's just the next level. He
takes the time to just see how they're doing, talk baseball,
talk life, and that's what you need as a manager
to get on a level with those those guys. Steel
Hurt we talked about this earlier in the year. It's
when guys are playing for a bigger purpose, whatever your
(37:15):
identity is. As a team, they just perform better. And
then on top of it, I think Edgar's done a
good job at finding ways to just simplify, get the
guys out of their own head. We've heard so much
this year of just the game plans are too complicated
or there's too much information. And although I don't totally
think that they've abandoned that, I think Edgar's voice and
(37:37):
the weight that he carries in the respect you've heard
Juliu even say these things, I think it allows guys
to go up to the plate with a ton more
confidence and some direction. And now you're seeing a bunch
of young guys go up there with a collective plan,
with some confidence, and it's rolling. And like you said,
they've been the best, you know, top five offense in
the league in September.
Speaker 2 (37:57):
Yeah, well, just to Dick's point, you know about about
the way they've played in September, number one in the
American League and runs number two in ops, number two
in batting average number two, and walks at number six
and strikeouts and look, I mean we always, at least
I did, thought that at some point these guys would
start to hit. I thought it would happen a lot
earlier than it did, But it's happening, and it might
(38:19):
just be enough to be enough to get him in
to the postseason. But I wondering, you know Edgar Martinez
better than me is is he literally just getting off
the couch for a month, a month and a half here,
maybe a couple of months, if there's a miracle run
to help these guys out, and then go back to
making mez cow and enjoying retirement. Or do you think
Egor Martinez, if he has some success with these guys
(38:40):
and gets through to them like he is so far,
would consider sticking around and doing this full time next year.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
Yeah, that's a great question. I think you've heard him
say that. You know, he wanted to take a step
back because he's kind of always remained in the organization
since he left being the hitting coach. And when he
was the hitting coach back then, the offense teams were unbelievable, right,
They just there was guys that were hitting thirty homers
a year and there was consistent production and they were
either in the middle or the top of the league
(39:08):
in offense. And so it's gonna be more of convincing
him to stay right. Like I think if you see
Jerry Depoto, he's gonna tell you that he's gonna want
Edgar to come back and kind of run this through.
Speaker 7 (39:18):
You know.
Speaker 4 (39:18):
I think the ultimate thing that he's done is impact Julio.
Julio's been really good this last month, and you know,
we've always talked about it, like this team goes when
Julio goes, and it just seems like there's some clarity
in him. I've seen a more controlled move and I
know Edgar's has done a good job. So I know
if Edgar's willing, they're definitely gonna want him because whatever
(39:40):
he's done since he's been in Seattle, he's been successful.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
So since Dan took over, the Mariners are thirteen and nine.
That's good news. Greater news is Minnesota seven and fourteen
with a negative forty one run difference on that time.
But what the bad news is Detroit's fifteen and seven.
So it's like, yeah, you're catching Minnesota. That's great. They
look like they're falling off. Detroit's actually playing better baseball
(40:04):
than you over the last three weeks. So what's going
to cool them off of anything?
Speaker 4 (40:09):
I don't know, they're just kind of clicking on all cylinders.
Riley Green is really swinging the back well. And you know,
they've been a good team all year around five hundred,
they just haven't swung it, kind of like the Mariners.
And they're pitching has been just as good near the top,
and you know, I think it's gonna be just hopefully
the timing of it right. They've got an interesting schedule
(40:30):
down the stretch and hopefully they run into a buzz
saw where they're pitching matches up with another team and
you know, the batting doesn't catch them because these guys
are playing good baseball. I remember a conversation we had
when the Marins were playing Detroit and how funny would
it be if Detroit, you know, went on to make
the playoffs. And since that series, they've been absolutely on fire.
So you know, hopefully it's a good team that comes
(40:51):
in and matches them and cools them off.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
Yeah, the Tigers acted like a team of the deadline
that was waving the white flag. I mean, they gave
up a bunch of guys at the deadline and now
here they are with a better chance to make the
playoffs than you. But Steven Susan with US courtesy Otaco,
Tom Mariners, and Yankees tonight from T Mobile Park, Game
one of three at six forty And just to kind
of piggyback Steven on what you're saying about winning this series.
(41:14):
If you win two out of three, you gotta go
seven to two, likely in your final nine to get
to nine and three. I think a lot of us
think nine to three minimum, maybe ten and two in
the final twelve to make a run. But if you're
gonna do this, you're gonna have to have your pitching perform.
And man, George Kirby looked great against the Rangers the
other day, but he looked pretty bad and the previous
four or five starts up until that point. What did
(41:36):
you see from Kirby in his last start that maybe
you did not see in his previous four or five.
Speaker 4 (41:43):
I thought he did a good job of location, especially
with George right, his whole game is when he's staying
away from the middle of the plate and capitalizing on that,
he goes deep into games. He's also been very successful
against the Rangers over the last several years, like he
just kind of dominates them for whatever reason. And you know,
you just hope that you face a team like that
that he's comfortable with and you can settle back in
(42:05):
because you know, I just think sometimes there can be
a bad matchup with George if you get a team
that doesn't chase a ton and they they like to swing,
they don't strike out, and you know, like with the Padres,
he was throwing so many strikes and the Padres just
don't strike out. And when you do that and you
got guys that can do damage, you just run into
bad matchups. And so you know, hopefully that rangers out
(42:27):
in really settles them in because, like you said, they're
gonna need him down the stretch.
Speaker 5 (42:31):
How much harder is it for a team like Minnesota
who has the playoff spot right now to hold on
to it and not be tight than it is for
a team like Detroit and the Mariners who were way
out of it and trying to come from behind.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
It can play a little loser.
Speaker 4 (42:46):
Yeah, it just depends on you know, your manager and
the guys that you kind of have in that locker room.
And you know, I saw them as they lost yesterday
in the dugout and they were just defeated against Cleveland.
You know, like it looked like they had already lost
the division in and lost the wildcard spot. And so
you know, it's more of the attitude that you're taking
towards it. And right now, when you're coming from behind,
(43:07):
you've really got nothing to lose, right You're just you're
trying to do as much as you can and hopefully
it's enough. Whereas you know, they're trying to hold on
and hold off the reins and they're not hot, and
so they can steal that. You sense that inside the
doug when you're not hot and things are going quite
as well. So you know, I hope they maintained that
and the Mariners can catch them.
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Yeah. Well, Cayl Rawley is at thirty and ninety three.
He's going to be a thirty one hundred guy when
it's all said and done. I mean he's kind of
a strikeout home run guy in a lot of ways,
but you know, a great defense. He's the leader of
that pitching staff. He's to me, the unquestioned leader in
the clubhouse. Look, I know we've talked about this before.
He's going to go to arbitration next year. He's not
(43:47):
a free agent until twenty twenty eight. And maybe Boris
just wants him to ride this thing out. But here's
the difference with cal Rowley versus maybe some other guys
that he represents. He's twenty seven, he's almost twenty eight
years old. If the Mariners come to cal Raley right
now and say, let's buy out arbitration, let's give you
a five or a six year deal, and let's lock
(44:08):
you in, is that a conversation that if you were
cal Rawley, Steven put your old player hat on for
a second. If you were cal Raley, would you instruct
Scott Boris to try and get a deal done right
now to give you the security that you've been looking
for for the rest of your career.
Speaker 4 (44:25):
You know, I think if I'm cal Raley and I'm
you know, the twelfth catcher in MLB history to have
two thirty home run seasons, you know I'm going to
be up for a Gold Glove. I'm going to be
definitely considered, if not single Handley when the Silver Slugger
and been nominated now twice for it. I'm probably holding
(44:46):
on right Like It's not like his relationship with Jerry
is really great. Players don't typically, you know, have a
great relationship with him, and as a leader, you want that,
you know, I know, you know he loves the city
and he wants to stay here. He loves the fans,
everything about it, those guys, so definitely wants to stay here.
But listen, the man has put up numbers, like you're
(45:07):
saying over and over again, since he's broken to the league,
you know, three years ago, and I think he's gonna
have to get what he's paid and what he's worth.
And you know, not to say that he won't take
a little bit of a discount, but when you got
an agent like Scott Boris, it's gonna have to be
somewhere near his actual value. And so you're looking at
him making somewhere between twenty five million somewhere with JT.
(45:30):
Real Muto's making, and they're gonna have to match that,
you know, aav or else. I don't think they're gonna
have a real good chance.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
So when you say hold on, you you said, let's
just just just play this out, just go to arbitration.
And I'm willing to wait until I'm thirty one years
old when I'm a free agent and say no to
a deal now, because I want to wait and see
what happens when I'm when I'm a free agent, and
what baseball has to offer. That's what you're saying.
Speaker 4 (45:55):
That's what I'm saying. Yeah, I think the longer he listen,
that doesn't That doesn't mean that in three years that
that conversation is over. It just means I'm gonna wait
another year.
Speaker 3 (46:04):
Right.
Speaker 4 (46:04):
The longer and the closer he gets the free agency,
the more that that number is gonna have to go up.
Because if his production numbers go up, right, then he's
gonna wait. So what's another year? Right, there's no rush
for him. He's going to arbitration. He's probably gonna make
somewhere around seven million, six million in his first arbitration.
So if he just holds on there, I mean, he's
gonna have life changing money in the next three years.
(46:25):
And I know that you know security and injury, and
you know he's been hurt a lot, so it may
be a different conversation. But I think at least a year,
maybe two, I think it's early to get an extension
unless it's near the top.
Speaker 5 (46:37):
Well, that's great news for the Mariners, right. If I'm
hearing you're right, I'm like, you're telling me, I get
I get prime career cal Rawley for arbitration money, and
then when he turns thirty one, I can just let
him go and let some other team pay him six years,
one hundred and twenty million dollars.
Speaker 2 (46:53):
Yeah, that's what he's saying.
Speaker 5 (46:55):
I mean, that's that's the best case scenario for John
Stanton Man.
Speaker 3 (47:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (47:01):
I mean you're looking at from the lens of hey,
I'm going to get the cheapest part of his career
at the prime level. But the reality is he's gonna
make He's gonna make six, and if he just continues,
you know, even if he doesn't get better or or
even maybe a little regression, he's going to probably make
six or seven somewhere around fourteen and then twenty one,
and then at thirty one years old. It's not like
(47:23):
he needs a ten year deal. You're just talking about
an average annual salary of somewhere thirty million. So if
he's if he wants to wait and sign a four year,
you know, one hundred million dollar deal or a five
year hundred million, one hundred and fifteen is probably what's
going to be around. I don't know that he's gonna
lose because catchers are still playing to the thirty five
to thirty six and being super successful. Just look at
(47:44):
Salvador Perez.
Speaker 2 (47:45):
Yeah, no, for sure. I mean, look, it's a it's
a risk either way, obviously, but I mean I'm just
kind of surprised. I guess to hear you say from
a player's perspective that you're willing to sit on this
for three years if there's a big giant pot of
gold out there. But we'll see what happens. Steven Sue's
a junior with us and courtesy at tackle time normally
on Mondays, we have him on Tuesday. The Mariners Yankees
(48:06):
coming up soon from t Mobile Park this evening. I
just wonder the governor on guys like Brian wu seems
to be off a little bit. He's gone eighty nine,
eighty eight his last two starts. Four starts ago he
was at ninety four. He did have the game where
he was under seventy when he got pounded by the
Angels just a couple of weeks ago. But if you're
(48:27):
Dan Wilson, and I guess in some ways, if you're
Jerry Depoto, are we now at the point of the
year where pitching limits and pitching numbers like that can
take a back seat.
Speaker 4 (48:38):
Yeah, you know, I think Wu's is a unique case, right,
Like they're pretty tentative with him all year long because
of that elbow scare earlier in the year, and then
you know, he had a couple outings where he went
out and didn't feel good. He got scratched from the start,
and so there's there's definitely some precaution when it comes
to Brian Wu. You knows. I would say that for
the rest of the guys, you're gonna him as much
(49:00):
as they can, and you know Dan's going to hover
that line of taking care of them because he needs
them hopefully for the postseason and living every game like
it is the postseason. But I think it's specifically in
regards to Brian Wu, it's just a little bit scary.
You're almost trying to get to the offseason with him
with a with a governor on him just so that
hopefully you can rest his arm and next year you
(49:21):
don't have to do that.
Speaker 5 (49:22):
Finally, tell me where you are on superstitions, because we
got going one going on with these City connect jerseys. Man,
they are fifteen and one in these Seattle blues. What
does that mean, if anything, to the mentality of this
baseball club, because it obviously means something because they keep
wearing them.
Speaker 4 (49:39):
Hey listen, you know, like at that point when you're
fifteen to one, like you understand that, hey, we feel
good in these and there's just kind of a subconscious
confidence in you. And so I wouldn't be surprised. It
may be a little bit outlandish, but I wouldn't be
surprised if down the stretch maybe they wore it a
couple more times and it becomes something of a fundamental,
you know, thing to around because listen, at this point
(50:02):
with with the minimal games less like you need anything
you can to get confidence in an edge on every game.
And if a city connect Jersey is what does it
by all means you should be wearing it every game?
Speaker 2 (50:12):
Yeah, I didn't play naked. If it works, I mean
that'd be kind of gross, but you wouldn't want that.
If that works, then go for it. By the way,
if you're if you're into the whole Baseball Reference playoff
odds thing. Last Wednesday, just six days ago, they were
at eight point four to make the playoffs. They're at
fourteen point three right now. Got the ball of six
percent as well. It's going in the right direction. Baby,
it's come on. Jump on the belief us with me, Dicky,
(50:35):
Jump on the bus. We got seats available, all right, man, listen,
great stuff. Best to your daughter. Tell her that we're
thinking about her and we'll talk soon.
Speaker 5 (50:42):
Man.
Speaker 2 (50:42):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (50:42):
Pal.
Speaker 4 (50:43):
All right, guys, thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (50:45):
All right, Steven Susan junior with us. We've gotta break
a lot more to get to on a busy Tuesday
right here on ninety three three KJRFM.
