Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
All right, we're back here at the five twenty Bar
and Grill in Bellevue.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
The mother shit man, it is awesome to be back here.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
I cannot thank Joseph and Randy Brazen enough for having
us out here. We love the Central Bar and Grill,
but there is something about this place that is amazing.
Two of the best restaurants in Bellevue, and after years
of bringing us to the Central Bar, we are moving
down the street to our local favorite, the five twenty
Bar and Grill, where everyone Dick knows your name and
(01:06):
where the Softy and Dick show started. Fourteen years ago,
Neuly expanded. They got the outdoor area, they got concerts
for the best bar in the east Side, live music,
large parties, and they're also home for all your Bellevue
High school football, pre and post area as well. All right,
so get on out here to the five twenty bar
and grill. Hey, let's put our hands together. How about
(01:28):
a nice five twenty Come on, bar and grill. Welcome
here you go for the coach, Mike Holgrin joining us
in person.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
How are you man, I'm doing good. I'm that was
quite something. And then you know, you know, you're injured
my hand. I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
You gave me a fist pump Dick, and I got
a little excited.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Hey, I know what's funny, Dick is, every time the
guy comes to a bar, we always ask you want
something to eat?
Speaker 3 (01:47):
You want a sandwich? You wants?
Speaker 5 (01:48):
He never gets anything, never anything.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
I've never seen you eat. You eat it all.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
I'll tell you what Thursday night is my night.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Cook that's right, Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
Remember, yeah, but it's usually cheesecake factory you order.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
Well, does that make a big difference?
Speaker 3 (02:03):
You should put a little effort into this thing. Mix
it up a little bit. What are you doingfie out
for dinner? Are you embarrassed to be seen a public.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
Whether I asked her?
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Yeah. So so now that we're here, come on down
with me sometime.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
We love to have well, I know somebody who can
take care of the bill. All right, So you want
to bring Kathy to dinner here at the five twenty
bar and girl, Hey guys, before we talk some football.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
We got an hour with Mike.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
We got Patriots and Jets coming up at five point
fifteen show. Heyo, Tani just became the first fifty to
fifty player in the history of baseball.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
I mean, look, I mean the.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Greatest thing we've ever seen in sports, maybe in person.
I was there when maguire brooke Roger Maris's record at
Bush Stadium in September of ninety eight, which at the
time was a huge deal back in nineteen ninety eight,
not as big now. But I mean, how impressed are
you by this as a as a person that works
in the athletic realm, And do you remember just being
floored by something that you saw a football player do
(02:55):
back in your career.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
Yeah, I mean he's amazing. He is amazing. And you
throw in the fact he can pitch too. Yeah, I
mean you're talking about Babe. Ruth did that, right, But
not many other people. You know. I grew up in
San Francisco, Dave, and when the Giants moved out to
San Francisco, Willie Mays was their center fielder and there
was a guy who hit a lot of home runs
stole bases. I didn't think there's anyone that could exceed
(03:21):
what he did. And you know, this young man has
done it. Now. Los Angeles is the perfect place for him,
with Hollywood, you know, and so so. But bless his heart,
he's that's really remarkable when you think about it.
Speaker 6 (03:37):
And yet coach, you know SOFTI talked about the comparison
with the McGuire Sosa run. I mean you can't compare it.
I mean maybe because it was two players instead of one,
but I just I almost feel like show Hayes not
getting his due nationally versus what we saw with Roger
Maris in sixty one, what we saw with with McGuire
and Sosa.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
Would you agree with that?
Speaker 4 (03:58):
I would, I would, Dick. I would just say, like
not unlike football. You know, things change over time, and
just the baseball has changed a little bit. Booney came
on and he talked about how different was it was,
you know, when he was playing, and how it is now,
those types of things. So I don't know if people
expected this from him when he got paid all that money,
(04:20):
but he should get the recognition he deserves.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Well. It's funny.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Dick and I were talking yesterday about Sean Alexander, who
was on the list for the Hall of Fame, and
we were discussing whether or not he belongs in the
Hall of Fame. You've already got Hutchinson, Walter Jones from
that group in the Hall of Fame. You will join
them eventually. I think at some point in somebody's lifetime year.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
He's going to spontaneously combust.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
If that, yeah, yeah, this will be a problem.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
Man.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
But he's he's a fall time and touchdowns, He's thirty
all time in the history of the NFL and rushing
yards and I don't know, I mean, I just kind
of feel like whoever was behind that line was never
going to be given full credit because they had Walter Jone,
Owans and they had Steve Hutchinson. But would you make
a case for Sean Alexander to be a Pro Football
Hall of Famer?
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Absolutely? Yeah, absolutely. Now listen, hutch and Walter they were
the best. They were really really good. But football, it's
not just two linemen and a running back. I thought
it was, you know, so you know, taking nothing, taking
nothing away from Tobek, right, you know, although anyway, we're
(05:26):
not going to get into that. But but Sean, he
was remarkable as a runner. As a runner, not a
very good blocker, but that's not how we used him.
He was anner coach.
Speaker 6 (05:39):
We also saw change recently in the Hall of Fame
rules where that coaches only have to wait one year
before they're eligible for the Hall. I mean, did you
when you heard that you think that's good news for
your case or bad news for.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
In my case? I was I was saying, is oh,
that dog On Belichick's gonna go in there and I
have no shot this year, but he can't go in
until the twenties twenty twenty six. I think, you know,
I think it's it helps coaches because when they're when
we were involved with the contributors and the seniors and
(06:13):
all that kind of stuff, you know, Robert Kraft is
going to go in right, you know, But now now
that's separate, and so I think it probably helps coaches
who are close. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Ok, yeah, you mentioned Sean couldn't block. Did you ever
try and rectify that?
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Like, did you?
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Actually, I'm not I'm not trying to be a smart
ass here because I'm no. Usually I am, but not today,
and I'm sitting very close to you. I don't want
to get socked here, all right. But when he first
showed up from Alabama, Yeah, did you tell your coaching
staff Joe Haskell, Hey, we got a problem here with
this guy as a blocker. Let's try and fix that
or do you just leave the guy alone, let him
(06:50):
be what he was?
Speaker 4 (06:50):
No? No, of course you try and fix it, because
I can't take him. He's going to have to block sometime,
either pass protection or on a run block. Right, not
very often because Max Strong carried well four times in
the whole year, but but he has to do that.
And Gil, you know, yes, But then I remembered distinctly
and practice I was moving around different, so that we
(07:13):
had all together, we had a blocking drill for the
backs against linebackers, and he kind of just refused. He
just kind of I go, what what are you doing?
I looked at Gill, he said what's he doing? And
finally I said, you gotta block him. It's not my
you know, So I kicked him off the field. Oh yeah, no,
(07:36):
I did. You know me, I'm very calm, So I
kicked him off the field. I said, hey, no, you
do what we asked? Uh probably maybe I couldn't remember
his rookie or second year. Well, I said, no, no, no,
you got to learn to do all these at least
try at least, you know, fake it then you know,
but don't do what you're doing right now. Go in.
Speaker 5 (07:58):
He was Jimmy Graham before Jimmy Grahm.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
No, but then afterwards, you know, afterwards, I never let
those things linger, right, So afterwards we passed. You know,
I just said, do you understand what we're doing here? Yeah?
He did, he did, and so he tried afterwards. He tried.
He just wasn't very good at it.
Speaker 6 (08:16):
Coach, were a little over one hundred and twenty minutes
into the Seahawks season and they're two and ohs. Give
us a state of the Seahawks address through the first
two games of the year.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
You know what, I think all of us expected them
to win those two games. I think the teams that
they played are have a lot of work to do,
you know, and the fact that they won the game great,
what a way to start the season. Okay, but then
also with a play here or play there, it could
have been it could have been not the same outcome.
(08:50):
You know, it was that close. And so the other
thing it showed us, I think, and it showed certainly
coach McDonald, you know, and he I think I read
something where you talked about it that there are areas
of the team that they have to fix, and they
it's a work in progress, just a little bit. And
so but bless you know, look at they're two and zero.
(09:12):
He just played a game in New England and that
trip flying home, what a great trip that was, you
know what I mean. So, but they do have some
work to do. And I think we followed them a
long time, you know, and you guys have followed it
a really long time, and you see it too, I
think you do. I mean, there's you know, the offensive
line has to work something out. You've got to be
(09:32):
able to do run. You got to stuff the run
a little bit, you know. But then now they get
another break though they're playing Miami, right, Miami doesn't have
their quarterback right, and so it started off it couldn't
start off, but any better for Mike.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Well, Mike Congreen's with us. We're at the five forty
Bar and Grill in Bellevue. We made the move from
the Central bar and restaurant to the five twenty Bar
and Grill right off here off Main Street. All belve
you're gonna be here every third day with Mike doing
the radio show. And you know, look, I mean you
when you coach never used to look for any breaks
on stuff when things weren't going well. They weren't going well.
(10:10):
It didn't matter who was banged up or who wasn't available,
blah blah blah. But Ryan Grubb doesn't have Kenny Walker
in the game Saturday. Clearly there's a huge drop from
Kenny Walker to Zach Sharmonay. Can we all agree on that?
By the way, he's got his third string offensive tackle
essentially in Stone Forsyth. We all thought Christian Haynes was
going to be the right guard and he's now a backup.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Obviously, how much.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Of a break do you think play callers coaches should
get when they're dealing with injuries and depth is shues
like that.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
They should get a break. They're not asking for one, right,
They'll never ask for one.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
We can give it to him, But I'm not saying him.
I'm saying us in the media now, us as analysts.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
Right, so you have to recognize that. I think guys
that follow that team and no football a little bit,
do you understand that you're missing a couple of key
components there that it's not gonna be the same. You know,
I go back to my time in Green Bay when
we won the Super Bowl. You know, we're killing everybody.
Then all of a sudden, I lose three receivers. You know,
(11:11):
I still got farv, still got our line, still got
our defense. Okay, and we lose to Kansas City and
and uh Dallas two games in a row because we
can't throw the ball. We cannot throw the ball. And
so then when we got the guys back, it was
our team again. And so yeah, I've been there. I
(11:31):
know that that can happen.
Speaker 6 (11:32):
We all hoped that Gino would look better this year
with Ryan Grubb. I think the consensus is he has
looked a bit better with with Ryan Grubb would have
been here. Thoughts of of Gino through through two games,
and how does he look different if he does from
last year?
Speaker 4 (11:46):
You know, Dick, he's he's he's done great and I'm
I've been a Gino fan, you know that, and but
he he you could make a case for he won
that game for them on Sunday yep, you know, because
it didn't run a lick and then he just wasas
he's a great passer, he's a great thrower. I think
the difference it seems to me between last year and
(12:09):
this year, you don't see him getting out of the
pocket and taking those big losses, taking the sack for
losing eight, losing nine. If he's gonna get him in
the pockets, he's kind of it's being more sensible that way,
even though he can run, you know, and that's a
big deal. And I think you give coach Grubb credit
(12:31):
for that. I believe they're going to run it a
certain way. And the other thing I'd say for the coach.
You know, in both games, he switched gears at halftime,
just switch gears, going from run to pass, pass to run,
and it worked so that's that's a that's an indication
of a fine coach.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
Well, I don't have to break here. What are you
looking for in a coordinator?
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Because we've got a guy in Shade Waldron who was
here last year, who's now with the Bears. They're killing
him in Chicago already after two games. We're praising Ryan Grubb.
But he kind of feels like, man, this looks different
and feels different, and I don't know if we're just
giving him a break and maybe he starts at a
different spot because of what he did that you dub
a year ago. You know, his his his his name
in this city is already pretty damn strong because of
(13:12):
what happened a year ago. But thirty seconds or least,
you know what, what makes a really good offensive coordinator?
Speaker 4 (13:17):
In your opinion, I think the communication with with the
offensive team. You have to be had to all of them,
aligneman to everybody, not just the quarterback, not just your
star running back, everybody right, the ability to adjust during
the game, and then when you call the play, believe
in the play you call and play and coach it.
It's been coached, it's been talked about.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
This should win, Yeah, no doubt all right, we've got
a break deck.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
We had a lot to get to with Mike to
a toungueo by Loa, Justin Fields, Bryce Young. You see
Dan Campbell had to sell his house because people found
out where he lived in Detroit.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
We're gotta break.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Mike Congrin's with us from the five twenty Bar and
Grill in Bellevue right here on ninety three to three
KJRFF from.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
The R and R Foundations Specialist Broadcast Studio. Now back
to Saftie and Dick on your Home for the Huskies
and the Kraken Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ
r FM.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
All right, we are back here at the five forty
Bar and Grill, Saftie and Dick with Jackson Mike Ogran
joining us here in Bellevue. Would you like an update
on the Dodger Marlin game? Just say yes, sure, thank you.
It's seventeen to three. Guys in the top of the
ninth show. Hey Otani is now six for six with
ten RBIs and three home runs and two stolen bases.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Who's pitching for the Marlin?
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Some position player the short stuff, Yeah, some guy named Brewhan.
I have no idea who Brewhan is, but he is
pitching for the Miami Marlins and show, Heyotani is just
destroying them. He now has fifty one home runs and
fifty one stolen bases. I mean, hell, by the time
it's all said and done, maybe he gets the sixty sixties.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Guys the end of the year.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
I just got the call you gotta gotta hear about
from Joe Davis.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Yeah, yeah, certainly smiling. We all are watching this guy.
Oh my gosh, oh Tony.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
The greatest day in bastall.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
History, his day in baseball historylievable.
Speaker 6 (15:23):
I mean, like it's certainly up there as far as
individual days in baseball history. I mean, the guy goes
six for six and three home runs and gets into
the fifty to fifty club.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
My god man.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
The only thing that sucks about this is that he's
not doing it at Dodger Stadium. He's doing it in Miami,
where there's like four people in the stands, and three
of them are Dodger fans. By the way, I got
to assume the attendance is actually pretty good with Oani
to go all Dodger fans exactly. Well, all right, Mike
car gets back with us so to a tongue of
my low and not gonna play skywer Thompson will start
the Dolphins on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
You saw the hit last week where he.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Kind of had his neck bent back against Tamorrow hamblin
kind of if I rotic at de mar is the
one that had the cardiac arrest a year ago, obviously,
and now two was getting hurt banging into him. The
concussion history is obvious. If this is your son, what
are you telling him to do? Keep playing football? Give
it up.
Speaker 4 (16:13):
Let's maybe sit on this for a while. What's the
advice I think? I think, first of all, you listen
to what the doctor's say. You know, take some of
the emotion out of it, because I think he wants
to play. Maybe his parents or don't want him to play, right,
but he's going to have to make the final call.
But you listen to your medical people. You know, look
at it. I had five concussions, you know, I mean
(16:33):
it's just only five. Yeah, I know it seems like more,
but you know, when I can't put at two and
two but no, but it and it's it's real, you know,
when I want the hits, though, Dave on him his
helmet moves so much. I'm just the first thing I
do is I check the equipment. I do those things.
(16:55):
But I think I would if I was his dad, right,
we talk about it, and I'd go with what he
wants to do, because there guys that's had a lot more,
many more concussions than he has had. You know, I
think this. I will say this. Colt McCoy had the
first big concussion when I was in Cleveland, and we
put him back in the game, and that blew up
(17:17):
the NFL, blew up everything. The attorneys came out to Cleveland,
we had this big thing. Okay, since that time, since
that time, okay, they've put in this this pro these protocols,
and it's much stricter now, much stricter now. And with
this thing, because he's such a good player, Yeah, they're
not going to take a chance and put him in sooner.
(17:40):
You know, they're they're they don't want that blowback on that,
and that's what would happen if he got hurt again.
Speaker 6 (17:47):
Well, I almost think that I agree with Mike Floria
was on with us yesterday, is just sit him out
the entire year, because one you give your brain that
much more time to heal but then also you mentioned
the emotions of it. The emotions are then more out
of play if you're talking about another eleven months before
he plays football.
Speaker 4 (18:04):
Yeah, right, But you know, Dick, I think that's a
good point. But I would say most of the guys
would have concussions in the league. They're out for a week, right, right.
They have to pre pass this protocol, not just how
you feel or headaches or the physical part of it.
You have to take these tests. And if you in
(18:26):
Colt McCoy's situation, he felt fine, there was nothing physically wrong,
but he'd get to the test and he couldn't pass
the test well enough, yeah, to get back on the field.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Right.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
And by the way, I just saw Colt McCoy on
Saturday too, he was doing the game for the Apple Cup.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
But by the way, he's a great young guy.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Yeah he was.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
His booth was right next to ours. By the way,
it's now twenty to three Dodgers over the Marlins top
of the ninth. Then brew Han is their second basement.
By the way. That is he's a position player that
came in that batting practice. You know, it's exactly like
actually batting practice could be harder than facing this guy.
But the Steelers are winning, they're two to zero, but
(19:08):
they're not scoring any points. What do you do if
you're Mike Tomlin here, if you keep winning ball games
but you're not scoring, maybe you feel like, hey, eventually
we're gonna have to score some points. Let's get Fields
out of there when Russell's ready? Or do you let
Fields play? As long as they keep.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
Winning, they will. I believe they'll do that. As long
as they keep winning.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
They'll keep him in there.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
They'll keep Fields even when Russell's healthy. I believe.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
So.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
Wow, I believe so. And then and then I think,
but but but they're not gonna keep winning. No, they're
not gonna keep winning. You know, feels they've they've won.
I'll tell you what. There have been more games this
year so far, fifteen to twelve, thirteen to twelve. Right,
you know what happened to the offensive productivity? You know?
(19:51):
And and guys are getting nicked up too, I think
because they don't play him in the preseason. Yeah, you
know so, but feels no, they want Russell to play.
He would do a better job than Fields, I believe.
But as long as they keep winning, there'll be no
reason to make the change.
Speaker 6 (20:09):
Well, I think you're right. I think no preseason is
causing both of those issues you're talking about, no offense
and injuries to a lot of guys.
Speaker 5 (20:16):
I don't think there's any question about it any coach.
Speaker 6 (20:19):
We saw something I think probably unprecedented in football that
the number one overall pick starting quarterback gets benched, what
seventeen months after he gets drafted. Do you think we'll
see a quarterback in the near future just sit out
and refuse to get drafted by a particular team like
we've seen occasionally in the past with like Eli and
(20:42):
John Elway. Because the Panthers have ruined Bryce Young.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
Yeah, and they have. They Listen, he's not the only one.
You know, it's happened. It's happened. Yeah. I've never met
the owner, you know, but I think I know this.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
They wanted to draft c. J. Stroud and the owner
came in, Frank Wright, right right, Yeah, And then he
was that, you know, he's the man, so he was
they were gonna he wanted to raft him, and he
knows quarterbacks, he's a quote, he knows the position. But
the owner came in and said, no, I want this
guy Okay, all right, so then, but now Frank gets
(21:18):
fired after eleven games. You know, it's just crazy. So
to your question, Dick, it's it is absolutely possible that
that could happen. Okay, the agent representing the number possible,
number one, number two pick whatever. Sure, we'll say to
that team don't draft him. Right.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Well, I mean if you were we asked you if
you were the father of two a tongue of Iloa,
what would you do if you were the father of
I don't know. I mean who could be the Quinn
you weres potentially Sanders Colorado or whatever.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
If you're Dion, well you kind of expect listen, expect
that to happen. One, Yeah, that'll be.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
He would not let your door to Carolina, No, no chance,
no way.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Would you? Would you also talk him out of it?
I mean this has been done before, Jack Lway, John
l Way.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
Yeah, Archie, Elia, this goes back forty years, that fathers
and sons are doing this to give themselves the best shot.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
Yeah, no, I would I would actualely consider that. Yeah,
you know, because listen, it's it's bad. That situation there
I think is bad, and it's bad because the number
one guy who owns the whole thing.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
Right, David Tepper is his name.
Speaker 4 (22:29):
Yeah, yeah, he's calling the shots and he doesn't seem
to have much patience at all.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
I'm looking at an article headline the Panthers have no
hope under David Tepper. I wonder if you'd quit working
for a guy like that, well, if you were established already.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
No, you know what, all of a sudden you say
I want this guy and he comes in. No, I'd say,
wait a second. You hired me as the coach, Well
I want him? No, Okay, let's shake hands.

Speaker 4 (23:37):
I know he has quite quite a life, you.
Speaker 3 (23:41):

Speaker 6 (23:43):
Well, you know, you pick the right sports like golf,
and they send you to places like Palm Springs.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
You know, if his son was playing volleyball, you'd say
go by yourself. Anyway, Our friends at Simply Seattle have
a yacht that they're taking to the Husky game on
Saturday with Lawyer Malloy is going to be hosting it
with the whole home Field folks.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
You go on the web or go in store. I
think it's in store, by the way.

Speaker 3 (24:36):
Speaking of the husky.
Speaker 4 (24:37):
Boat, how about a yacht. I had a yacht for
a week.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
You did, and then you got a guy that started
hugging you on the sideline and you pissed him off
and he made you give it back.
Speaker 3 (24:44):
Hey, you told that story last week.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
But Marshawn Lynch went to massage Mike McDonald during the game.
Somebody walked up to you during the game and you
couldn't handle it, so you lost your The dumbest thing
you ever did.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
One of them was.
Speaker 5 (24:56):
An expensive decision not to hug.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
The g There was a lot of guy hang out
in the sidewin.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
That's all you had to do, all right, your little
sacred spot.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
It was on the field. We're on the field.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
Did you watch the Apple Cup last Saturday?
Speaker 4 (25:08):
I watched the last part of it.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
Where'd you make it a fourth down play?
Speaker 4 (25:11):
I didn't like it?
Speaker 3 (25:14):
We love.
Speaker 4 (25:17):
No.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
It was.
Speaker 4 (25:20):
If you have to analyze it, it's it's an option
play with a quarterback that's probably not a great runner.
I don't think he's a great passer. But they didn't
have to look they wanted they had. It's got to
be set up a certain way. You call a play
down there like that, you look at the defense. No,
I can't run this play. There's ann I can't run
(25:40):
this play. You got to go to something else.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
But they said they didn't have something else.
Speaker 6 (25:45):
Why can you ever think of a situation where you
wouldn't have something else for your quarterback to check into.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
Not in something like that. You know, and I've told
you guys before I had to win the game. I
had two or three plays to win the game in
that situation. These are the plays we practiced. But then
you have to have plan B.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Yeah, is that is that something where? I guess I
just go back to the play itself and Jed's reaction
to it. And by the way, you know, there's a
lot of people that have said this week that the
play would work if it was executed properly. I don't
understand where that comes from. I guess I mean people
that are smarter than me are saying that human one
is not one of them.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
By the way, he agrees with us.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
But if your jetfish, why would you not have a
play for this guy to get out of in case,
for whatever reason, he did not see the right.
Speaker 4 (26:35):
Look. No, you're a point well taken. Now you got
to have that right, you know, because that's the game.
That's the game right there. You don't see they line up, sit,
they land. More guys over there, four guys over there. Right,
What are you gonna do? Run it into the more guys. No,
you got to either call time out or you got
to run into the play.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
Oh man, I love it, jeez. Coach.
Speaker 6 (26:57):
We were talking about the backup playing the Hawks this week?
How dangerous is it to face a backup quarterback? Because
we've seen many times backup quarterbacks that nobody had basically
ever heard of come to Seattle and beat the Seahawks. Fortunately,
I don't think it ever happened to you, but it
happened in the Pete Carroll air I know that. So, uh,
(27:17):
how dangerous is it to face a guy that a
you haven't seen very often and and be that your
guys might feel You know, we can walk into this
building and take care of Skuyler Thompson, no problem.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
Yeah, you gotta be careful. And it did happen to
me twice, dicks, Okay, in fact, my wife reminded me
of that when I was talking about they're going to
bring a backup quarterback in here. He goes, Yeah, do
you remember when Troy Aikman was injured and Jason Garrett played.
They scored fifty one points West, we lost fifty time.
(27:51):
How do you remember that stuff?
Speaker 3 (27:53):
Yeah? I was gonna say, she's got to steal trap.
Speaker 4 (27:55):
For a mind on certain things? Are you kidding on
certain I got it? So?
Speaker 2 (27:58):
I mean, but but like to I guess I just
worry about the players kind of letting off the gas
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (28:03):
Hey, we got this whatever.
Speaker 2 (28:05):
The one thing I do enjoy is that Mike McDonald
has said a couple of times this week he wasn't
happy with the way the defense played a week ago.
I think he's gonna have these guys fired up and
ready and focused on Sunday. But they are pros, but
they're also humans, and they got to look across the way.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
If Skyler Thompson think, ah, we got it.
Speaker 4 (28:21):
Right, well, I would say yes, except for two things.
I think Mike McDonald is the type he won't allow
that to happen. I don't believe he'll allow that to happen.
And then two, it's the beginning of the season. They're
all still just doing it. They're still just learning who
they are. So there's a lot they know how important
the game is, but no will it's stick in somebody's mind. Yeah,
(28:45):
but I don't think it'll affect how they play.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
Hey, coach, we saw an interviewer this week with your
old friend John Gruden, and he says he's open to
a college head football coaching job. What do you think
they fit would be John Gruden heading up some Power
five conference team.
Speaker 4 (29:01):
Well, he's I'll tell you what. He's an outstanding, outstanding
football coach. And what happened to him. We all have
opinions on that, and he every once in a while.
I look at when he went for me. Every once
in a while he'd say dumb things and I'd have
to grab him. And you know, but and so, but
I think he's paid the price. Now, he's paid the price.
(29:21):
And if he has a chance to come back into
the league, any league, the NFL, but in college, the
college game, the team, the organization would be fortunate to
have him.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
Do you think that this is a first step for
him if he does take a college job in making
an effort to try to get back to the NFL
one day. Is he is he hireable in the NFL? Honestly, Well,
he's sixty one years old.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Yeah, I would say that if he gets into the
job and gets to go into college, you know, I
would say, he'll make the most of that and then
that's where he'll be. You know, the NFL is notorious
for I don't know, bring up Kaepernick, but he you know,
he you mess up in certain ways. Sure, involving the commissioner. Sure,
all of a sudden, it's hard to get back in.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
Yeah, no, I got it.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Hey, it's good to have you back at the five
twenty bars thrill and the fact that Dick he was
working the mute button all by himself a couple of
minutes ago, unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
How far you've come.
Speaker 4 (30:16):
This is a this is really yeah, I'm learning this.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
The old guy would have just taken his headphones off
or coughed all over the airwaves.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Man, you you are now a technological marvel. What you
were able to pull off there. I'm very proud of you.
Speaker 4 (30:27):
Well, thank you, good work man.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
Not many people can do that, So congratulations, thanks right,
enjoy your thirty second drive home. Mike Calm grin with
us every Thursday from the five twenty Bar and Grill
