(00:26):
Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey, and your host Dave Zuffi Muller.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
All right, I'm still trying to figure out what the
hell you two were fighting about in the break there
by the way. There's always something, Jackson. We got to
get like a little recording going here. When these guys
walking into the studio before the microphones are even on,
they're bitching and moaning and fighting about something that took
place like.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Forty years ago, and they will never resolve it.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Ever, this guy's gonna be at his funeral or vice versa,
and you'll be yelling at the grain.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I told you we want to beat me by one
hundred that night. It's unbelievable, man, So what the hell
were you guys.

Speaker 4 (01:01):
Even talking about the last time we faced in high school?
You know, Mario has one go to thing that's all
you can ever go to the last time we played,
we read you, but he didn't say anything about all
the other times or the sport of basketball that we
played against each other. And you don't want to have
you got one win out of four in basketball. You
don't want to have them just saying Wow, real man, World,

(01:26):
I was I was super nice and too oh World,
I hit you for thirty.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Dyl Larkins forty I hit your don't speak ill of
the day. He might have had thirty one.

Speaker 5 (01:37):
Right, Jackson.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
You remember in Dumb and Dumber when the guy just.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Says, guys, guys, guys, guys, my god, this is out
of control. This is what happened. This is what happens
when you play Weber State in the opener, right and
you win thirty five to three. We ain't gonna be
having this kind of conversation after the Michigan game or
the Affle Cup, or the Iowa game or the Penn
State game. Well, yeah, it means they kicked their ass
or we got our ass kick one of the other man.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
But Mario Bailey is back with us.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Condolences man Mario on the passing Love Mari and by
the way, sorry you couldn't join us on Saturday. Man,
thinking about you the entire day, and Huskies went out
and got a win on Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
I was convinced Greg that he did not see the
game on Saturday. Oh no, I have direct He was
texting us.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
He was texting us in the pregame show and offering
his opinion, which you did get something right. I did
talk about one part of the team that was going
to be a strength, and I said the linebackers on defense,
and you guys both said the secondary. And they looked really,
really good, right, I mean they looked great.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
It's Weaver State. They looked dominant.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, but those guys did what they were supposed to
do and it was a overall it was a good game.
I think we saw some things out of the Huskies.
You know, it was a wait and see, so we
saw yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Well I'll tell you what, Man, just being down the
sideline and being next to Price Sock, that guy's no joke.
I mean, he looks good coming out of the locker room.
He he looks like he's got an NFL body on.
That guy. But let's just go round in the room
and talk about kind of what stood out, you know
from the game on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
No disasters.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Obviously, nobody got hurt except for Quinton Moore, and he
might be okay in a couple of weeks. They need
him big time because that position group is thin, and
they might want to think about moving somebody over to
tight end.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
But when you did watch the game.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
On direct TV, yes, not on Comcast, what did you
think about what you saw Saturday?

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Man, I loved it.

Speaker 5 (03:27):
It kind of reminded me of the old Huskies of
with me and myself and Greg played. It was like
a run pass balance. We ran the ball great. We
passed the ball. It looked like we ran the ball
to set up the pass, which is very different from
what we've seen. I did like Price Hos, but I
like Daddeus Dixon. He came to play. He was making
plays all over the field. We weren't getting that much pressure,

(03:48):
so guys were having to cover a little bit longer,
and I thought they did a great job. But it
was fun to see the running attack of balance attacked
and I loved how the defense played.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah, I thought that I had some concerns, as we
expressed in the pregame, about the offensive line not knowing
what these guys were capable of because they most of
them have not started a Division one game at this
level and with this opponent, there's still a little bit
of question out there. But I think for what they
were supposed to do, they went out and did it.

(04:17):
There was a couple of things that can be cleaned
up a little bit, but the run game was fantastic.
I like the balance it has been the last couple
of years and air show, so it was great to see.
And not just a good running game, but Jonah Coleman
looks like a monster. I mean, this kid is going
to be really well. He is really really good. I
think on the defensive side of the ball, they were

(04:39):
so solid everywhere it's hard to nitpick. But I do
think as we get into the season, they're gonna have
to put a little more pressure on a quarterback defensive line.
You know, it's got to get some gap integrity and
maybe be a little more dominant, and you know, maybe
they need to hang out at the training table and
get a little more beef. But other than that, you know,
things went well and the score ended up how it

(05:00):
should have been.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, I'm just going back to Coleman Mario for a second.
You know, even on the first drive when he had
that big long run called back and just the whole
crowd was just you know, wow wow. Does he remind
you of anybody that played at U Dub or played
in the NFL. Buddy of mine texted me Maurice Jones Drew.
I think he's actually more stout than Maurice Jones Drew,
and he was that guy was yoked. But does he

(05:22):
remind you of anybody that we had that played for
U DUB.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
I can't think of anybody. I've thought about this a
few times, and I can't think of anybody. If I
was gonna say Corey Dylon, but Corey Dillon is a
total monster. That's That's not it. And his small stature
with those big calves and thighs, I just can't think
of anybody.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
From a style perspective, though, and and and again.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
I don't want this to sound self grandizing, but he's
similar to me in the fact that I was no no,
I was a cutback runner because we zone blocked. You
remember we did zone We ran to read play in
the role play, which is zone blocking, which is exactly
what their coach does now. When you zone block, and
if you come downhill balls out downhill, the defense has

(06:04):
got to flow that way, and that gives you big
cutback lanes. And that's what I did. I cut back
because our offensive line was doing a good job of
pushing the front side. And when you cut back and
you got big thighs like that and someone's trying to
tackle you with their arms because they're going to the
other direction, forget it.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
You absolutely will not make that tack. Do you worry though.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
About how many tackles he had to break at the
line of scrimmage on Saturday, meaning when you play a
Michigan or a Penn State or in Iowa, like, does
that travel well?

Speaker 4 (06:31):
I think if you go back and watch the tape
in entirety, there are times when he has to do that,
but every runner back has to do it. But there
were a lot of times where again because he cut back,
he cut back into some big holes and some big lanes.
And that's what this offensive line I think, based on
who they are, we'll be good at those those.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Red type of blocks.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
You know what I'm saying. Those zone block I thought
they did a great job. He only has sixteen carries.
I mean, we might have ran the ball thirty five
times in the game, but they gave it to Cam
Davis and a few other guys.

Speaker 5 (06:59):
So sixteen, I'm not concerned. And like Greg just said,
I think there was a few times where those holes
were huge.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, absolutely, Yeah, I guess I'm just trying to figure
out how much we can really take from that opponent. Yeah, right,
and they get better as the year goes by. I mean,
Eastern Michigan is not Weber State, and I think Wazoo's
better than Eastern Michigan, Right, and then you get into
Big Ten play in the following week. But hey, look,
I mean there's a chance you go back and think
about all the change that forty four new players, that

(07:25):
this was going to be an absolute disaster no matter
who you play with, communication wise, and you know, false start,
set off sides and all these penalties, and none of
that happened on s Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
I mean, they played a really clean football game, and
I think that's indicative of these coaches having prepared these guys,
and these guys were ready to play a football game.
They've seen all the you know, rankings and the prognostication
of guys who are going to be all comfortent stuff,
and so they wanted to come out and play well
regardless of who the opponent is. And I think our

(07:55):
schedule is set up well where we get to kind
of figure out who does what really will and what
our identity as a team, and these guys will continue
to get better. So I'm not necessarily worried about, well,
who the appointment was that yet you know on Saturday,
But I think what they did was they took care
of business and they looked like a Will coached football team.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
But I'm glad they played him because they're not ready
yet to play in Michigan or at Penn State and Iowa.
So this is what you're looking for, right looking to
get better as the year goes by. But Husky Hawks
brought to you in part by our friends at frostpred Corpse
like chews Chill and by the Emeral Queen Casino Bettan
Capitol the Northwest. Come down to the beautiful EQUC Sportsbook
to bet, watch and win all season long. Mario the
wide receivers man, Giles Jackson nine catches, Denzel Boston getting involved.

(08:38):
Would you make of the guys that will step in
for three NFL whiteouts.

Speaker 5 (08:42):
I sent you a text I said, Giles Jackson would
be the player of the game.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
I thought he did. You were right. I thought he
did tremendous. He had ten catches.

Speaker 5 (08:50):
Denzel Boston looks like they were trying to get him
the ball all the time to start the game. I
thought he looked great. I was a little disappointed in
Jeremiah Hunter. I believe that's the name. Only two targets. Yeah,
two targets, That's what I thought. I thought him coming
from cal and having sixty catches the past few years,
I thought we would get him a little bit more involved.
But with Jonah running the way he did and the
guys playing that way, I'm sure he'll do good. But

(09:11):
I was impressed with the receivers. Like I said, it
reminded me of when we played then, you only got
a certain amount of targets.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Ah, Why did they not get Jeremiah Hunter involved more?

Speaker 4 (09:22):
Well, I think it was really just the calls are
weren't designed to go to anyone in particular, right, So
depending on where you are in the formation, what the
defense gives you, who gets open. They were actually just
trying to throw the ball and run the plays that
were scripted, so I don't think they were looking for
him specifically. I think what that means, though, is is

(09:44):
we continue on the season. When other guys have good
games like Denzel Boston and Jiles Jackson, now the defense
starts to pay more attention to them.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
Bang. Now Hunter's open.

Speaker 4 (09:52):
Now he's the guy with single covers, He's the guy
where they don't shape the coverage too, and he'll have
his opportunities. You know, we were spoiled the last years
with our wide receiver course, so it's going to be
more of that. Maybe every two guys don't have huge
games every week, but maybe one guy shows up, has
a big game, and the next week is somebody different,
and the next week is someone else. The one thing

(10:13):
that I hope that we talked about at the beginning, though,
is that we have a healthy tight end because the
tight end position, as we saw even in this game,
is going to be extremely important in the past game
because we don't throw the ball that much outside of
the numbers. But the first time we did down the field,
it was to a tight end. So those guys are
gonna have to be a big part of this passing game.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Well, what do you do do you move somebody to
tight end? I mean they've Washington's done that before. They've
taken a bigger body, you know. And you know Gerald
Daniels right back and I think he made the NFL
because he got moved the tight end.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
So what do you do there?

Speaker 5 (10:44):
I think the most important thing is can the person block?
Because the tight end has the unique responsibility of blocking
and catching the ball. So we run the ball a lot,
so you're going to have to have a tight end
that can block. So if they have somebody that they
can move over that can block and just happen to
have some hands, and that's what you do. But end
is a definite unique position.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
Well you can you can actually, you know, position it
differently where when you know you're going to run, you
can put another office of lineman to the strong side
and overload it with lineman. From that perspective, but I
do believe that, you know, because we don't have those
dynamic outside guys, and because we're going to be running
a lot of short crossing routes and flat routes and

(11:22):
seam routes and things like that, we do need that
safety blanket for the quarterback, that tight end who can
leak out catch the ball and get four or five
six yards on first down.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Yeah. I think in the end it's it's it's an
issue no matter what.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Yeah, I mean right, like even if Quinton Moore comes
back healthy and look, I like Quinton Moore, but he's
quitting more. I mean, he's got like two catches in
his career for crying out loud and this he'll get
his opportunity year though that this may have been the
year that he's stepped up. And you know, but I mean,
do we look at Quinton Moore and do we see
an NFL tight end? I mean I don't write I

(11:55):
basically I don't see an all big tight end.

Speaker 5 (11:58):
I would say, like, you don't know because like Will Disley,
I think Will Disley came in as a defensive line.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Correct and then yes, Jeff Joke said get out of
here and go play off. So you never can you
never can't, well, you never can tell. But even my
point is, and I want this to turn into an
anti Quentin More thing, you guys soft he hates Quinton
More And it's not that at all. They need him
because they need more there anyway, Yeah, before he went down,
they need more.

Speaker 4 (12:23):
I just think this he has the perfect body. I mean,
he's about six to four about definitely want we talk
about Giza, but he has that NFL physique in size,
and he's athletic. I just think he hasn't had the
opportunity to be that guy, especially in a passing offense
like last year with a tight end. Let's face it,

(12:45):
he made some great catches, but usually he was the
fourth option. And so in fact, if the tight end
is the fourth option, you're not gonna have a lot
of guys get an opportunity to really make catches. So
this is Quentin's year, his opportunity to show that. I
hope he gets healthy because I think he's has the
NFL size and he does block will I don't know why.
I went back and watch that again, and I still

(13:07):
do not know why they called a hold to Jonahs touchdown.
Jonah's touchdown, the guy just filled down. His hands weren't
outside the frame or anything like that. It was just,
you know, a great block. So I'm looking forward to
him getting healthy and having the good season.

Speaker 3 (13:20):
So it's a first game for the referees too.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
Greg Right, let's have some grace here and give those
guys a break, because it will be ripping them plenty
as the year goes. You think Big ten officials are
as bad as PAC twelve officials, by the way, because
some of those PAC twelve officials are now Big ten
officials nothing like those PAC twelve. And I'm always going
to be indebted to Quenton for that touchdown obviously against
the Oregon to put us up ten there in the

(13:43):
final few minutes. So I hope he does come back.
And Jed Fish made it sound like he may not
be out very long. But Will Rodgers makes his debut, Mario,
you know, nothing real flashy out of him.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
But then I wonder how vanilla they were in the
game on Saturday.

Speaker 5 (13:56):
I think they were probably vanilla because it is Weaver State.
They didn't want to put too much. What we could
tell is like Will has his favorites. Never underestimate how
quarterbacks do have their favorites or somebody they have good
energy with and they want to go to. When we
started off the game, he went to Denzel Boston like
three or four the first three or four times, but
as the game went on, he went to Giles Jackson,

(14:16):
went to the tight end, went to the running back
Cam Davis a few times. I thought it was a
precise game twenty for maybe twenty five and no interceptions,
like that was a great game for him to start
it off. It looks so different though from last year,
because we're used to seeing the ball thrown down the
field and outside the numbers over and over and consistently.
In this game, we didn't see a lot of that.

(14:39):
Most of it was in the middle of the field.
It was short cross so he was out routes. It
was you know, those types of catches.

Speaker 4 (14:45):
We ran a lot of tunnel screens, a lot of
passes behind the line of scrimmage. So he's been good
at that and so they're putting things in that he's comfortable,
but they will continue to build in those down the
field throws outside the numbers.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
So I want to.

Speaker 4 (14:58):
See how he he has that chemistry, like you just
talked about with which receiver, because these guys are built differently.
Jiles Jackson's a different stature in size than a Roma
Duns and those guys, So it's going to look different,
I think, no matter what, just because the personnel is
different and the quarterback's arm is a little different.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Can you say a by the way, for me say
a Dons. They've been calling him a Dunes ever since.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
He showed.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
You have the second best second last year. Ready to
conceive that now, Yeah, really, there's something wrong with Mario.
He just can't admit when he's wrong. So wait a minute.
So we're not conceding that Rome was better.

Speaker 4 (15:38):
You don't want to start he said Jay. He didn't
say Jay was better. He said he was tougher. So
I'm gonna not call a technicality, but Roma Dunze was
definitely tougher and better in every sense of the word.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
Although I love Jayalen McMillan.

Speaker 5 (15:51):
I we'll just talking about the starting of the PAC
twelve championship. Who scored in that game? Who scored in
the next game against Texas?

Speaker 3 (16:00):
Jalen seven? People were recovering exactly Again, we're sitting up
a dollar jar every single time say dude, Adunza.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
The guys in the NFL, And he finally figured out
you can say Jayalen mccause your name. It's like Dick
and the Kelnick thing. Man, he just just can't get
it right. But I thought I thought Will Rogers was good.
Uh you know, I I think he probably was what
I thought he was right. I mean, there's not going
to be a giant cannon on him.

Speaker 4 (16:31):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
The the arc of the ball looks totally different than
what we saw a year ago. Because you talked about
maybe the greatest arm in Washington football history. I mean
you mentioned that touchdown against Texas, that laser beam right
to the to the post to McMillan. Will Rogers doesn't
have that. But what he does have is four years
second all time leading passer in the SEC. I just again,
maybe this sounds like an insult to the guy. I

(16:54):
just start off by expecting Will Rogers to not make
any mistakes that will kill the football team.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
That's what you want.

Speaker 5 (16:59):
That's why he's starting. That's why demand is that how
you pronounce his name is correct. That's why that's why
he's not start. And we want Will to go out
there and not turn the ball over and get the guy,
get the ball to our playmakers.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
Yeah, and we want a quarterback who's seen all the
different coverages. He's seen all the tricks that the DBS
can you know, and the defensive coordinator can put in
a game plan and not be fooled and make the
right read at the right time and get the ball
into that spot where the receiver can catch it and
be the only one to catch it.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
But we don't need him necessarily to win football.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
It was kind of like back in nineteen ninety we
didn't need Mark Burnelle to win the football game. All
he had to do is turn around, hand the ball
to me and we went and we got that With
Jonah Coleman. He doesn't have to win the game Jonah
Coleman and his legs. That will come a time where
we're gonna be absolutely, absolutely absolutely.

Speaker 5 (17:52):
They're gonna stack that box and it's not gonna be
joining the time. It's gonna be time for Will to
make some plays. And I think he's up to it.
And when I seen him under coach Leech's program, I
seen him he could be a gunslinger when he needs
to be.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
Well, let's do that. We're gonna break come back and
talk about what we saw Saturday. Look a head to
Eastern Michigan, a guy that apparently both of you guys
played against when he was at Roosevelt High School.

Speaker 3 (18:14):
I got to pick six against. Well, yeah, I would
forget me too, I gotta pick six.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
There's actually evidence of what Mario just said, and we're
gonna play that next on ninety three to three kJ RFM.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
Now back to the cours Life Husky Hunks on Tuesdays,
Gray Lewis, Mario Bailey and Dave Safti Muller on your
own for the Huskies Sports Radio ninety three point three
kjr FM. First and goal at the one snap and Coleman,
there's the hat trick touchdown Washington.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
Jonah Coleman got a three touchdown game for the Huskies.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
It is Washington debut and the Dogs lead Weaver State
twenty seven and nothing.

Speaker 3 (18:54):
What a debut for Jonah Coleman.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
He became the and there's kind of a caveat to this,
the first Husky running back to have one hundred yards
on his debut since a guy named Charlie Mitchell back
in nineteen sixty. Reg you were what eighteen that year?

Speaker 3 (19:09):
You got jokes? Do you remember what was negative nine?

Speaker 2 (19:14):
I mean, technically back in the day, freshman couldn't play,
and so he had to wait until the sophomore year
to make his debut, and technically Jonah Coleman's a transfer.

Speaker 3 (19:22):
He's like, he's right exactly.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
It's not like we're talking about a guy that was
playing high school football, Miles Gaskin though when his second
ever game went for like a buck forty five on
Sacramento State when he was a freshman coming out of Oday.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
So good for Jonah Coleman.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
I'm gonna go with Johns Jackson.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Giles jeffs chas Or because you said Giles Jackson ye
before in the game and he had nine catches people,
and you were.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Right, all right.

Speaker 4 (20:07):
I want to say this though, I love Giles Jackson.
He's a great kid. He's stuck with this program. I
know he had already transferred once, but he's stuck with
this program, knowing that he was going to be behind
these other three guys, and.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
He came here.

Speaker 4 (20:20):
When you leave a place, you usually come to a
place where you know you're going to play right away, right,
And that didn't happen for him, right, But he's stuck
with it, had injuries last year and all of that stuff,
and now he's getting the opportunity to sign. So I
love him. But the dog of the game has to
be Jonah Coleman. I mean, this kid was fantastic to it.
He put the run in running back. I mean, he
had a fantastic game. But I'll say this, as much

(20:43):
as I'm pleased to see that, I really want to
give most of the credit though, to the patchwork. And
I only call it patchwork because these guys have all
confirmed from places, all from different places. They're all different
years and different circumstances and situations.

Speaker 3 (20:57):
And there was some movement in the game. They flipped
out a.

Speaker 4 (21:00):
Party to the right side, from the right side to
the left side, and they took the guard and put
him at tackle. So they were doing some different things
and regardless of who was on the field, there were holes,
and Jonah Coleman and Mohammed and even Cam Davis had
some good plays.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
It's as a party as a part, not as a partty.
He's not a two year old going poopy. Okay, that's
my Italian accent. Part Italian as a party. There ain't
no party like a drew as a party because it
drew as a party. Don't stop, all right, Just don't
forget that. But that's the thing is that they played
him at right tackle. They played him at left tackle.
I swear to god, there was a drive where he

(21:37):
was at right tackle on first down and left tackle
on second down. They were moving around Enoch, the kid
from Ohio State. They were moving around Landon Hatchet. So
did we see a combination like swan A at left tackle?
Seems a little light in the hoof to be playing
left tackle at this level of college football.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
But I don't know how many options they've got, Mario.

Speaker 5 (21:56):
I'm not sure. I thought the offensive line did great.
I thought you attribute that to coach. Like you guys
talked about, it was a clean game. I was so
impressed with no penalties and how guys got in and
out of off the field. Like the total game of
offensive line, defensive line, just the cleanliness of the game
was great.

Speaker 4 (22:12):
I think we could see, you know, eventually being the
left tackle. I mean, I think that that's something that
could happen. And then as a party on the right
side is the right and if Hatchet is one hundred
percent healthy, he gives you some flexibility at center or guard,
depending on who were your best five. I think that's

(22:34):
the goal. If he's one of the best five, but
you like the transfer from Portland State at right center,
then play well. Yeah, but so then now you put
a Hatchet at guard. So you want to get the
best five guys on the field at the position that
they can also thrive at. So I think we were
still seeing them tinker a little bit, but I would
expect at least those four to be four of the

(22:55):
guys that will start and then probably guard Memoir or
something like that.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
And then let's face so we got to see what
the looks like when they played Penn State and Iowa Michigan.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
Yeah, right, we still have two or three games.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
Like I said, we can grow and get to know
each other and figure out what combination works the best.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Before we hit Michigan, we might be four or five
and oh.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
Absolutely, kind of like the opposite of the show. I
already know you guys are schmucks, so there's just no
need to even think about it. But how about the defense.
Three points allowed by Weber. Obviously, you know again, you
take it for what it's worth. A big sky team,
blah blah blah, all that stuff. We didn't see too
many breakdowns though, I thought Mario didn't see a lot
of mistackles. There was one play I thought where it

(23:34):
was Elijah Jackson Jacob Lane got busted for a couple
of misstackles, but those were few and far between.

Speaker 3 (23:39):
I thought, Yeah, a big difference from last year.

Speaker 5 (23:41):
Wasn't as many mistackles, wasn't as many penalties, and our
defensive backs were all over everything. I just again, we
talked about it early in the segment that I was
just a little disappointed with the pressure, but we didn't
let the quarterback do anything. He might have had eleven
for thirty or thirty two or whatever it was, he
never stopped us. We did let a running back get
over hundred yards, though, But I felt like a little
bit of that.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
Way at the end.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
And a funny how when he gives the stats, it's
like he doesn't have him in front of him. He's like, yeah,
the quarterback may have gone eleven for thirty two for
ninety eight three point one yards.

Speaker 3 (24:11):
His phone right there, No, like you're actually just like
predicting run number because I don't have my uh computer
laptop in front of him.

Speaker 2 (24:20):
I mean, we were State may have run for like
three hundred or thirty seven times for a buck fifty
five four point.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
Two yards prepare something like that.

Speaker 2 (24:28):
But the defense overall, just the the breakdowns that we
have seen in years past from these guys, they look
like the communication was pretty damn good.

Speaker 3 (24:36):
I thought the communication was great, especially on the back end.
You didn't see guys.

Speaker 4 (24:40):
That was one time I remember it was on a
third and long down on we were State's own side
of the field where there was a bust and a
guy ran up the middle of the field and caught
a first down conversion on a long past.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
Other than that, it seemed like guys were in the
right place, in the right position.

Speaker 4 (24:56):
I think to as well, though we do have the
more pressure on the quarterback and keep him in third
and second and third and longs.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
I think out of the defensive line.

Speaker 4 (25:06):
When I look at our defensive linement, it says that
Valdez is three oh five and Jacob Bannis is three
oh seven.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
They don't look that big to me. No, they just don't.

Speaker 4 (25:14):
When I look at them, it did not look like
they were big road graders on the defensive line. And
I think in that first drive they they completed some
good runs and got four or five first downs and
attempts to feel goal happened to miss. I think that's
where I need to see the most improvement. Who's going
to be a guy a playmaker on that defensive line?

Speaker 2 (25:33):
You got anybody?

Speaker 3 (25:34):
Is there a Braylin Trice on that defensive line that
wasn't named Bryce Butler?

Speaker 6 (25:38):
Is that?

Speaker 5 (25:38):
I thought he did pretty well. I thought he had
a good game. Him and Valdez. I thought played well. Okay,
we had a couple of plays here and there against
Weaver State. I need to feel confident, though, that those
guys can anchor that defensive line when Michigan comes in
here on October the fifth. You were hoping in this
game that somebody would have stepped out, especially in Weaver
State and they're going to throw the ball thirty times,

(25:59):
that we'd had some body break.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
Sure.

Speaker 2 (26:01):
Well, let me ask you this, if if Zach Murphy
bats that ballway catches, it runs for six, it looks
totally different.

Speaker 1 (26:10):
Right.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
We're talking about like six inches that kept them from
catching that ball. And a lot of people have made
comparisons to Joey Bosa. Some have said Max Crosby, you know,
because those are white guys, and we always compare white guys.

Speaker 3 (26:20):
To white guys.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Obviously, I don't sure, right, but he looks like when
you're standing on the sideline and he's got the armor on,
he's got these got the the the elbow braces and
all the pads on and stuff. He looks the part, right,
But does he have the tenacity that you're looking for?

Speaker 4 (26:37):
So I was watching him several times, specifically on pass downs.
Now let me let me preface this by saying, these
guys from Weaver State got rid of the football.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
I mean there were two step drops get rid of
the ball.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
You know.

Speaker 4 (26:49):
They moved him off the spot quite a bit to
throw the football, so there wasn't a lot of opportunity
to really rest a passer. What I saw was a
guy who likes the bull rush and who is tenacious,
he'll keep fighting. What I didn't see was a lot
of swims and arm unders and technique type of stuff.
So those are the things that I think he really
needs to work on.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
It.

Speaker 4 (27:10):
All our pass rushers, because from what I saw from
our pass rush, it was more the effort and the
bull rush. But I didn't see a lot of spin moves,
you know, double counter moves and that kind of thing.
And again they didn't throw a lot of five and
seven step drops at all, So maybe they'll work that in,
but I do need to see more technique rash rush.

Speaker 5 (27:28):
How about you, Mario, same thing. No guys had anything
in their arsenal. Everybody was bull rush just about every time.
Nobody had anything to pizazz to him or trying to
get there. Like I said, I thought with a weaver state,
somebody would have made a difference. I didn't see it
this week.

the radio show. But Eastern Michigan, Sorry, the Eagles coming
to town on Saturday. Their head coach is a guy

(30:15):
named Chris Creighton that played football at Rosevelt High School.
He was on with us Roosevelt Rosevelt.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
There you go, a duns.

Speaker 2 (30:25):
ROSEI velty. He was on with us about an hour ago.
And as he's on the air waiting to go on
the air, I'm promoting our show and I say, the
Husky Hanks are coming up, Greg Lewis and Mario Bailey.

Speaker 3 (30:37):
This is what Chris Creighton had to say about that. Well, listen,
did I just hear you guys say Mario Bailey? Yes, yes,
so from Franklin High School. Mario Bailey.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
Correct, he's actually sitting He's sitting about twenty feet from
me right now, so he won't remember me.

Speaker 6 (30:53):
But we played every freshman JV and then varsity basketball
game against each other, and then obviously football my junior
and senior year. Absolute stud and uh, that was just
good to hear that name. So it will be uh,
please tell him, I sayalo.

Speaker 3 (31:11):
So he did not ask about Greg Lewis. No, he
did ask about Mario basically a time.

Speaker 4 (31:17):
Again, I wouldn't ask about me because I took him
to the house, I kicked off one of his passes
started touchdown. So he has nightmares about Greg Lewis and
if he played basketball against me, I'm sure I elbowed
him in the throat wow, because I was a dirty
basketball Wow. I was physical and I was Mario knows
he could ask his teammates. Was Greg elbowing folks and

(31:37):
knocking people down?

Speaker 3 (31:38):
Absolutely? Well, that's the guy that's coaching Eastern Michigan Saturday.
Great great man.

Speaker 5 (31:43):
I do remember him, of course, But my junior senior year,
I had a couple hundred yards and four touchdowns against Roosevelt,
So I'm sure he remember that.

Speaker 2 (31:53):
What do we want to see out of U dub
Eastern Michigan's got fifty five I believe it is, or
is it fifty three?

Speaker 3 (32:00):
Something like that?

Speaker 2 (32:01):
New players on their team. You're talking like, well, over
ninety guys on the field Saturday. It will be game
two with their new teams. So hard to really again
get a gauge on any of this stuff, but you're
talking about a football team, Mario.

Speaker 3 (32:13):
In Eastern Michigan.

Speaker 2 (32:14):
Then, Hey, they've played Arizona State and one, they've played
Illinois in one, they've played Purdue and one. Under this guy,
they'll play anybody, and every now and then they'll beat anybody.

Speaker 5 (32:23):
I just want to see his build on what we
did last week and show some consistency. I like what
we did last week. I thought we did a great
job of running the ball, passing the ball. Our defensive
backs came to play. Thirty five to three is nothing
to sneeze at. So if we can build on that
and show some consistency, that'll be great. I would like
to see a faster start as well as we played
last week. It took us a few series of get going.

(32:45):
So now we've gotten those, you know, the rust off
and whatever. Let's get a faster start and let's create
more turnovers. Right, Let's get you know, some interceptions, Let's
get some fumbles. Let's turn up the physicality of the
football game. I would like to see this team, as
clean as they were, become more physical. You know, before
I give you my thoughts on Saturday, who cares?

Speaker 3 (33:04):
You're right?

Speaker 2 (33:04):
You know what my mom does, David, how can yet thoughts?
I want to go back to last Saturday for a minute,
because I thought the crowd was great at the game, right,
I mean you were there. Look it's not at seventy
thousand people sell out SRO Student Section Pact.

Speaker 3 (33:19):
I get it.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
You long for those days to come back well, eight
o'clock against an FCS opponent. I thought the crowd honestly
was gonna stink. Yeah, it was not terrible. I mean
they had sixty plus thousand. I was actually impressed by
the crowd.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (33:32):
I don't know if they had sixty thousand plus, that
might have been the announced number. But it definitely counted
every person well. And definitely the lower bowls were pretty full,
and there were a lot of students, more students than
normally we have this time of year. But they made noise.
They cheered loud on third downs. You know, it's an
educated football fan that we have at the University of Washington.
So I thought, you know it, really it really did

(33:54):
show up for a game that a lot of people
would have just written off.

Speaker 2 (33:56):
Mario, do you want to start to see them settle
on an offensive liners are still room to kind of
tinker with that? You think this weekend?

Speaker 5 (34:02):
No, I think they're still room. I think we have
two or three weeks. I think that's what these the
schedule is for. I keep talking about it. This schedule
is to get comfortable and learn who can do what
and kind of get our identity. We still don't have
an identity. Even though Jonah ran for those yards, it
might not be that way this coming up week. So
we're trying to figure it out, and I'm not ready
for them to be said, Well, I think we're going
to be a balanced team. I think we're going to

(34:23):
run the football to set up the pass. We're gonna
throw the ball short, intermediate and take the big shots,
you know, based on the defense, you know, cinching down because.

Speaker 4 (34:32):
They want to stop the run. So yeah, we're still
creating the identity. But I think they know who they
want to be. They just need the other team to
start to adjust to them so that they can attack
those different things. But they're, like he said, there is
still time to kind of figure out, you know, not
just on the offensive line, but I think, you know,
in your secondary cause they're like you guys talked to me.

(34:52):
There are a lot of good players, but who are
going to be our primary guys, guys we're going to
start with, And then who are going to be our
rotational guys, Guys that we can bring in count on
them to give a blow. So I think those are
the things that they should continue to tinker wit and
continue to work out because this is a game where
hopefully we win by thirty plus rights.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
All right, before we get out of here, we got
a pair of round trip tickets on Delta Airlines to
Pittsburgh to give away. Courtesy of our pals at Delta
dot com. They got NonStop flights to Pittsburgh. If you're

Speaker 2 (35:30):

didn't tell you that we're actually giving up your seat.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
You're taking a train man to the game. So we
gotta get driving. We gotta get one more guide, tobove. No,
we're good.

Speaker 2 (35:42):

this is the second time we've done this. We fly
