Speaker 1 (00:01):
What testing Live from the R and R Foundation specialist
broadcast studio. Now back to Softie and Dig powered by
Emerald Queen Casino, the Betty and Capital of the Northwest
on Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
All right, we are back on a Thursday night, right
here on ninety three three KJRFM. Joining us right now
on the radio show with some big news. By the way,
we'd like to announce here on the program, but we'll
get our boy, our guy, Brian Schmetzer on while we
do this.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
The head coach of the Sounders joined us right here
on a Thursday night. How are you man?
Speaker 4 (00:39):
Good? I didn't forget about you, Softy.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
You know what, Thank God because we don't have to
find you again if you were late like you were
last week.
Speaker 4 (00:47):
So well, oh go ahead, go no you go, no you.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Go, No, you go, no you go.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
We announced this earlier today, about three hours ago, a
partnership with you and the Rain and iHeartMedia Seattle. We
are deepening our long standing collaboration to provide premiere audio
coverage for soccer fans across the PNW. And the best part, Brian,
of this press release that I really like for fans
(01:16):
of both clubs. Leading sports radio KJR talent like Softy,
Dick Fane and Jackson Felts.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Wow, how about that?
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Are set to be on site at Luhman for select
matches of both clubs, conducting live remotes, interacting with fans,
and drinking tequila with Brian Schmetzer pre match on the
Lumenfield concourse. It says that about that, Brian, congratulations, we
still get to be buddies for at least a few
more years.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Well, I thought you had me on the show because
we were buddies, not because of some iHeartRadio Seattle partnership.
I thought it was just you and me.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
No, if we weren't radio partners, you wouldn't be here.
Let's be on them just kidding. Hey, First of all, honestly,
we're happy to do it. We're fired up for the
partnership to continue it. I know that we'd like to
be celebrating something else besides.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
What happened last night.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
And I think we asked you a couple weeks of
the game against Saint Louis. We thought maybe it was
the best game of the year. Does this one maybe
go the polar opposite for you?
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Last night?
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Well, yeah, I mean, look, I'm not going to sugarcoat it.
We did not play well. You know, it kind of
sucked actually, but you know, I mean that's gonna happen
if you can't score goals. And look, I can't fault
you know, because I mixed the team, so I can't
fault the players. I got to own some of that.
(02:38):
You know, I thought that the last game we played
against LFC, we beat them five to two with kind
of a similar lineup, although Jordan came on at halftime
when we kind of opened things up. But you know,
I got faint that we got a deep roster, and
you know, last night it certainly didn't happen for us.
But there's one big butt. I mean, goals change games.
(03:02):
They scored the first goal and then Danny Lava came
within six inches of scoring. Pedro had a header to
hit the crossbar osase Rosario. You know he has it
anywhere else in the goal. Maybe it's one one at
half time and maybe the game is different. I'm not
saying we would have won, but at least we would
have put ourselves in a position to be competitive.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Well, three games in eight days is tough, but what
would you say to fans who said, coach, you shouldn't
rotate your lineup, just start all your best guys because
they're pros and they should be able to play that much.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Well, that's how Jordan Morris got hurt. That's how Bigrew
de la Vega got hurt when I played him on
two days rest. There's certain things in our sport that
we have to take into consideration. We have the Club
World Cup coming up, where I need to be cognizant
of that because we want to compete in that tournament.
(03:57):
And MLS is a long season, and you know, I
rested Stephen Fry, Christian Rodane had logged the most minutes
of anybody on our squad. So this was the game
I decided to do. It didn't work all on it.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Well, I get I guess the question that would be,
does that naturally maybe let you not be as irritated
about what happened last night. You're a competitor, you don't
like seeing things like last night.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
But if you had.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Played, if you had played all those guys that you
arrested and still got your ass kicked, that would have
been a problem.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
That would have been a bigger problem. Yeah, or if
we go down to Portland on the weekend and the
guys that I rested don't perform to their abilities, yeah,
then I'm going to catch a lot of flak as well.
But look again, last time we played LAFC up here
in Seattle, score line was five to two, and Steve Tarundelo,
the coach, he and I were talking after last game
in Seattle and then last night the similarities. The teams
(04:53):
are close. The LFC and US, we're close. We're going
to be there at the playoffs at the end of
the year.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Move on to the Portland Bastards. Coach, we got them
coming up, so they're off to a pretty good start
in twenty times five. What's your take on the Bastards.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Well, they are outperforming all their stats. You know, Jackson
can tell you all the expected goals and they're outperforming things.
They're just believing that they can win. And they had
a good midweek result against RSL and nil mill draw
on the road for them. They won their last home game.
So you know, we're not afraid to go down there.
(05:31):
We've actually had some very good games down there, but
it is going to be a challenge.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah, I just think that this complimentary tone that you're
taking towards Portland right now. I don't like it, and
I want to hear you say something derogatory about Portland.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Okay, Portland sucks.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
There's your drop Jackson.
Speaker 6 (05:52):
Right enough, speaking of I will give you the expected
goals here, because you're better than Portland in both categories
Seattle for expected goals twenty one point you Portland is
only at sixteen point four or five ahead there for allowed,
you're also four to seven sorry, seven below them. You
know what I expect by the way, I expect you
to kick their ass on side. Sure, nothing enough with
us expected gold schmol nonsense. I mean a couple of
(06:14):
weeks ago, I think you asked us the question, the
rhetorical question, why can't we play the same on the
road as we play at home?
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Then you went out and won three to one at Houston.
So how do you.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Play like that again in a hostile environment like the timbers?
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Or is it even possible to do that down there?
Speaker 4 (06:31):
You think, no, it's possible. Look, we went down there
a couple of years ago, maybe it was last the
year before, I think beat them six to two. We've
had some good results there last year we were one
one and one against them in the regular season. Those
teams are always tough because there are arch rivals. They're
going to be up for the game. The fans always
(06:52):
get into it, you know, got the fish and all
the stupid things. They stay up there. So, I mean,
it's going to be a good atmosphere. Our guys loves
playing in that atmosphere, and you know, hopefully hopefully we
can you know, play well and give him the middle
finger after the game.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
Are you going to have our second favorite Jackson, not
Jackson Felts, but Jackson Reagan back for this game?
Speaker 4 (07:16):
He is probably not going to make it back, Dick.
I'm figuring Dallas our next home game, Dallas, that's the
return date.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
How about Jordan Morris? How's he doing? How are his spirits?
How often do you talk and what's the update there?
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Man? Well, I talk to you. We talk on a
daily basis because I go out of my way just
to make sure I say hey, good morning. You know,
as your son, your kid, you know how you're feeling.
He's better, Softy, he's getting better. He's on the grass again.
He's running around. I mean not at his top speed,
of course, but we're getting him back on the graph.
(07:51):
So he's still ways out, that's still Club World Cup,
but he's doing better.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
That's pretty cool that you guys talk every day, so
like you've got his number, you can text him whenever
you want.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Oh for sure, I got all their numbers.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Wow, that's pretty cool. Who's the biggest name you have
in your cell phone?
Speaker 3 (08:06):
You think.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
The biggest name?
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Yeah, the biggest celebrity in your cell phone?
Speaker 4 (08:10):
Softy softy safty.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Dave Bowler, Okay, number two behind me, biggest celebrity.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
And by the way, let me ask you your question.
Go ahead, Nick Haynes, Dick Maine.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
When somebody when somebody dies, do you take their number
out of your phone automatically?
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Because I use you leave it in.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
I got like Hank Aaron's number, of Pete Rose's numbers
in they're still really I can't get rid of him.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
How about you com.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
I leave it in. Look, I can tell you a story. Look,
Ziggy was my mentor, and he's such a good guy,
and he's in my phone literally, like and God rest
his soul. He passed on here about five years ago
or something like that, like a couple of years ago.
I swear to god, Softie. I'm just sitting there and
all of a sudden, my phone buzzes and it's Ziggy
Schmidt and I am freaking out. I am like going,
(08:58):
holy crap, Diggie's calling me from heaven and you know
all this sort of stuff. Well, his wife Val had
kept his phone and she like, pucket dozed me God,
So it was like my heart was beat like like
really what he's.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Like, Wow, that is amazing good lungs, right, that's right.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
You never know. Yeah, well, coach, we're.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
Exactly a month away from the Club World Cup. So
what does depth preparation rather, when does the depth preparation
start for that?
Speaker 4 (09:30):
Well, we've got this next game against Portland. Then we're
going to play the following weekend. But that's the start
of another three game week, then away at Vancouver and
then it's Club World Cup, so I gotta get through Saturday.
Then we got one more tough stretch of three home games.
That's the that's the beauty. How the terrible part of
(09:53):
the schedule is we got three away games in a week,
But now we get three home games in a week,
which is much much better. And then we'll start focusing
on the Club World Cup. When we get a little
bit closer and the games are a little spread out.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
All right, listen, go get him on Saturday six pm
on the FM, right here on KJAR and fired up
to continue this partnership with you guys. And I don't
think I'm speaking out of turn when I say this.
We love carrying the games, we love having the access
and all that stuff. But personally, my favorite part of
this partnership with us and the Sounders is doing this
show with you every week, man, every week.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Well, I appreciate that, since we're being serious. I love you,
and I love Dick, and I even like Jackson. I
even like Jackson. When you go on when when you
guys go to when you guys come to the stadium,
maybe you guys do a remote show. You guys can
come in the coaches room prior to the game. I'll
(10:52):
treat you guys like the big timers you guys are.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Well, if you do that, you know we I know
what Jackson's reaction is going to be if you let
him into your office before the game.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
I mean, dude, I don't know. Man, Come on, how.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
About how about the three of us stand on the
sideline with you during a game. Can we do that
and just kind of hang with you during the game
as well?
Speaker 4 (11:12):
Hey, you can do that at a warm up. You
guys can watch this warm up. That'd be great. I'd
love it, all.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Right, man, Hey, great stuff. Go get him, Sorry about
last night. Go kick Portland's ass on Saturday and we're talking.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
A week okay, take care, all right.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Thanks Brian Schmitzer with us on the radio show. And
again the Sounders the Rain expanded our partnership with them
today here at iHeartMedia, Seattle and going to extend this
thing for a long time. They are going nowhere and
we got the game on FM.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
Is that right?
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Jackson Saturday six pm pre game six thirty kickoff against
Portland's Saturday night right here on ninety three three KJRFM.
