Speaker 2 (00:17):
All right, boys and girls, we're back on a busy
Friday right here on ninety three to three KJR FM
and NBA Playoffs Hot and Heavy Boston the Knicks Tonight
South Dick's looking to stave off elimination in game six
tonight Nicks can go to the Conference finals for a
matchup with Indiana coming up tonight.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
That game is that what time?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Five pm? Yeah, five pm from New York and then
Game seven Sunday, Oklahoma City and Denver. One guy we
turned to for NBA playoff coverage because he says yes
and everybody else says no. Our friend PJ Carlismo coach.
How you feeling, man, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Not much? Softy Dick good talking to you guys in
New York, And was supposed to do a couple of
these Boston games, but I'm a little bit of a
back issue, so I'm laying low for two games and
then hopefully you'll joined back up with the Western Conference Final.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
I got you. We'll rust up, my friend, and we
were thankful that it didn't affect your voice because we
love having your thoughts on the NBA playoffs. And why
don't we just start with what you saw last night
with Denver in Oklahoma City, because as you know, PJ,
all of Seattle is rooting hard and I mean hard
for the Denver Nuggets. Like that right now, talk about
what you saw last night and what your thoughts are
(01:30):
in Game seven.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Well, first of all, a great effort. I think Nicola
Jokic is Nicola jokicch and I'll start by saying before it,
regardless of what happens, I expect they'll both be fabulous
again on Sunday. It's just it's sad that whichever one
does not get the MVP, and it's probably gonna be Jokic.
(01:56):
It's almost criminal to have the kind of year they
both had that they didn't have good they were the
best players in the league this year. They had historic years.
I mean, it'd stand up to almost any year any
players ever had in the NBA, and the fact that
one of them is not going to get the MVP
trophy is sad the two of them are. They're different,
(02:16):
They're so good, They're so good in so many ways.
It's amazing. And selfishly, I hope that Game seven lives
up to that. I hope both of them play like
what they are. The best two players in the league,
and you know one of them is going to get it,
one of them is not. One of them gets to
go forward. But it's amazing to watch them play. Jamal
(02:38):
Murray last night with a really gutty performance, which is impressive,
and the difference in the game was just that. I mean,
there was four or five other things that were important,
but they had two of the three best players in
the game, Nicola and forget how you wherever you want
to put Shay or Nicola one or one A, but
Jamal Murray was the next best player in the game
(02:59):
and that was why they won. They had two of
the top three players. As good a year as Jalen
Williams has had and it's been fantastic. He wasn't you know,
bat Jalen Williams last night, and that could be a
big factor on Sunday. If again, if Nicole and Jamal
Murray are the two best players on the floor, that's
gonna be. That's gonna give Denver a chance. Now, they
(03:20):
needed a whole lot of other things to happen. Michael
Porter finally made a couple of shots. Julian Strawther was unbelievable.
I'm sure all the zag fans that live in Seattle
were enjoying watching me and Ched Holmes and play. But
I mean for Julian Strawther, I mean he he basically
had contributed very little. Christian Brown was excellent. Again, they
(03:41):
just had more players step up. And that's been the
okay Cemo, okay, See's the deepest team in the league.
Mark that no uses all his players. I mean, this
guy's I think the average fan doesn't even know, Like
I don't given night of Cason Wallace and Aaron Wiggins,
these other guys come in big Jalen Williams. They have
so many guys that you know, not even talking about,
(04:03):
you know, the Honchos, Alex Caruso, Isaiah Hartenstein and Ched Holmgen.
It's such a deep team. They're so good defensively, they
disrupt you so much with their forcing the turnovers and
scoring in transition, and they have so many three point
shooters that it's amazing. They were the best team in
the NBA this year, not by a little conclusively, but
(04:24):
last year when the Celtics won, it was the first time.
And I should notice that. I'm going to say five six,
seven years that the best team in the regular season
won the championship. So it just doesn't always go that way.
I think it's going to be I thought it was
a great game last night, Straw that was magnificent. Russell
Rustburt struggled in the first half, and then he made
(04:46):
a huge play late in the game when they were
turning the ball over like crazy. That time he split
the trap, went into the rim and laid it in.
It was a big, big play. He also had the
tap Lee bound. He had two good one assist, one
should have been an assist. You know, somebody else missed
with neither Watson or one of the other players missed
a layup off a good pass by Russell. They need
(05:08):
to do that again. They need to have Joki and
Jamal be at the top of their game. They need
somebody else, a couple of guys. Christian Brown was really
good last night. They need Michael Porter to make a
couple of shots or Russell to make a couple of
shots and then somebody be at Watson or that blow
up the defensive block that that Watson made that wiped
(05:28):
out a fast break their way and put it together.
It was a great That's been the best series by far,
you know, fantastic series. Edge to ok See they're playing
at home. They still have shown the tendency to be
able to turn over Denver when they get behind, and
I'm wondering if Mark Dagnell's not going to press more
and sooner in Game seven, just get after them and
(05:51):
make them handle the ball some more, because it's really
been a problem for Denver. And when they when they
turn it's not just that they turn you over. When
they turn you over, they score, they leave, they leave
the league and fewest turnovers themselves, most turnovers forced, and
most points off turnovers. So that's such a big part
of Okayse's game that sometimes even if they're not making
(06:15):
their trees or some of their guys don't look that great,
they just beat you a team defense and points off turnovers.
So Denver's gonna have to withstand that. Yes, it's an advantage,
you know, being in the home court, but I don't
think that will be the deciding. There's also a big
experience advantage for Denver. Even though okay See went to
(06:35):
the playoffs last year, Denver won two years ago. Denver
has some key contributors you know from an NBA championship
team that I think will you know, if you're a
Denver fan, hopefully enable them to produce any Game seven
on the road. Okay See still has to prove they
can get to that next level, that they can win
a you know, a huge series. They didn't get out
(06:57):
of the second round last year. Their goal is year,
from day one has been to win a championship. If
they do anything other than win a championship, this is
going to be a disappointing year for the Thunder.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
PJ.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
Carlissimo joining us and coach. Every time the Joker goes
out of the game, I just hold my breath. I
turned blue until Coach brings him back into the game.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
But they were able to stand that last game.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
He did not play for seven of the minutes in
that game, and normally when he's out for those four
to ten minutes a game, they get out scored like
fifteen to two every game.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Why were they able to stand that last night.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Guys stepping up and a little bit of cooperation from OKC.
OKC guys other than SGA missed shots. They kind of
They missed some shots at a critical time that you know,
early second and early fourth is when OKAC goes to
their bench too, and even though their bench is deeper,
they didn't perform last night. Some of those guys that
(07:52):
you know are a pretty consistent basis all year have
been providing a lift for did not do that last night.
Jamal Murray, who has to carry the team when jokers out,
stepped up and Julius Straw that just blew their minds
knocked him out of those three he had ten points
at those points so quickly it was unbelievable. I thought
(08:14):
Christian Brown was Brown and Watson's defense was fantastic. All
you can do is, I mean, they're making SGA work
and he makes it look like there's nobody guarding them.
He's that good. But I just think more players, I
know it's simplistic, but more players played better for Denver
(08:34):
than did Okay sees guys and normally that doesn't happen
because Okay, he just keeps throwing bodies at you and
they find the ones that are playing good on a
particular night, and they all play. Dagnolf uses his bench
better than anybody. But last night, in those non jokech minutes,
they got out played, and that was mainly role players
(08:55):
getting out played with us.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
So you know, the only thing that matters to me
is just getting the Thunder out of there. Okay, I
don't really care who wins the title, to be honest
with you, I just wanted to not be oka. See
so in your professional opinion, PJ, who would give them
the biggest fit who left?
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (09:16):
I mean Denver obviously is you know, if the Thunder,
for example, win Sunday at home, which I think they're
going to, is it Minnesota in the conference final and
then Boston or New York or Indiana who's already advanced.
If the Thunder get this done Sunday and make the
conference final, who remaining do you think would give them
the biggest matchup problem?
Speaker 4 (09:38):
Prior I'll beg off, prior to the JT jury Jason Tatum,
it would have been Boston, a healthy Boston. And I'm
really copping out now, but it's a fact. Yeah, Boston
without Jason Tatum and with a not healthy Kristap sportsingis
that virus whatever he's got that they don't know. They
truly don't know. They're not being secretive about it. They
(09:59):
haven't figured that they thing out. But he's not playing
like Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Cornett more than picked him
up the other night. He was fantastic. But I just
don't I think the Celtics are not. Last year they
could have been. Everybody's back, an entire team was back.
And if they're healthy and everybody's seeing how important health
is in the playoffs, it comes back to us every year.
(10:20):
It kind of colored the beginning of that Indiana Cleveland series.
It certainly was a factor in Boston. You're seeing key
guys getting hurt and dramatically changing the matchups. I think
I put Boston too. I put the team that has
the best chance to knock out the thunder is in
the Western Conference finals, Minnesota, and he's flit with him
(10:42):
during the year. They have a lot of weapons. They
got a great young player. Again, I'm not ready. I'm
not sure kind of what I said about Jalen Williams.
Ant's probably done a little more to this point, but
cann't do it in the Western Conference Finals? Can he
get them over the top of the Western Conference Finals.
Julius Randall's playing great, Mike Conley, those other guys, now's
(11:05):
rie off the bench that they're strong. But I think
it's going to come down to whether ant man could be,
you know, the best man. Can he compete with Sga.
He doesn't have to out play him, but he's got
to be right there with him, you know the way
yo kiit Chen Murray are with him in this round.
So I say Minnesota first, Boston. If somehow they come
(11:25):
back from the dead and win three in a row,
they would be the second biggest option. To me, it
is a challenge for the thunder well coach.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
Before we let you go, let's talk about that game
coming up in about an hour and a half. I mean,
Vegas thinks it's going to be a game. I mean
I think if you just thought, okay, and New York's
going to take care of business at home, get rid
of the Celtics who are underhanded.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
But two and a half points spread.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
So do you think this goes down to the wire
and we got a chance to send it send it
to a game seven?
Speaker 4 (11:52):
I think it's a very good chance send it to seven.
I think the first thing that realize is Boston was
the best team in the NBA on the road this year,
better in Cleveland, better than ok See. They won thirty
three games. I believe they were thirty three and eighteen
on the road, which is absurd. They were a better
road team than they were a home team. They were
better away from TV Garden than they were there. And
(12:15):
even without JT and even with Chris STAPs, probably at
less than one hundred percent, the fact that they're playing
on the road will not impact Boston as much as
it would impact most teams. They thrive on the road. Now,
Jalen Brown's got to play out of his mind, which
I think he'll do, as will Jalen Brunson for the Knicks.
(12:35):
And then it's gonna be Josh Hart's predictable, what you're
gonna get. He's gonna play like a monster. He's gonna
be good. But Kyle Anthony Towns needs to have a
big game. Og Ananody has to make Jalen Brown work,
which is not easy, but he's got to make him work.
I kind of feel about Derek White the same way
I feel about Josh Hart, I'm very confident he's gonna
(12:56):
he does too many things. He plays defense, he comes
up with rebounds, he makes big shots, you can take
the ball to the basket. I think Derek White is
going to have a big game too, and so it's
going to become other guys again, Al Horfu, who's playing
great at thirty eight. Luke Cornette, you saw what he
did the other night. Peyton Pritchard off the bench. I
know a lot of you know, people up our way
(13:16):
loved Peyton from when he was at at Oregon. And
he's the sixth man of the year. He's got to
make shots. Sam Houser's got to make shots. They can
do that. They're deeper that they have more bodies for
sure than the Knicks. Two that could be a factor
just in terms of I don't think the Knicks are
necessarily going to get tired. But if you have seven, eight,
nine guys to throw out there, you know there's there's
(13:38):
a chance somebody, you know, another guy's going to step up,
like Cornett did last night, like Junian Strawther did last night.
The knickt list is a shorter list. Yeah, Campaign Duce mcgride,
they can come off the bench and do something. But
Timbs rely so much on that front five that it's
I think it's going to be much more on Karl,
Anthony Towns and Ogn and Obi defense to help the
(14:02):
side the game tonight.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
PJ, sorry to hear about your back. I want you
to rotate ice and heat every twenty minutes. And if
that doesn't work, whiskey, lots of whiskey, all right, paltch
tres bourbon coach.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
All right, Doc, I appreciate it, Thank you, all right, Bud. PJ.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Carlizamo who was hung up in New York with a
with a bad back, so he'snna be watching basketball tonight
like the rest of us. And that and that brings
us great segue to our bracket, by the way, at
four o'clock today, our Friday bracket, because like I said
in the open, we were going to do a bracket
that felt totally different. If the thunder had won last night,
I think it would have made sense. But the Nuggets won,
(14:39):
So forget that all of us are Nugget fans right now,
right we can all agree on that that we're all
Denver fans right now after what they did yesterday, Oklahoma City.
I got my Denver Nugget t shirt on the way.
It'll beer between ten and two tomorrow thanks to Amazon Prime.
I can't wait to wear that thing with with pride
on Sunday. So the the bracket is your favorite non
Seattle sports moment. All right, now, we got eight possibilities
(15:03):
that we're gonna discuss here coming up at four o'clock
twenty twelve. Miami beating Oklahoma City in the NBA Finals,
which by the way, they have not been back to
the NBA Finals since then. Ohio State hammering Oregon, and
this year's Rose Bull Baltimore beating the Niners in Super
Bowl forty seven. That's the game where the power went out,
remember that, and the Niners had the ball close to
(15:25):
the to the end zone they got denied with Kaepernick
Chiefs beating the Niners when the Niners blew that ten
point lead in the fourth quarter. How about Cam Newton
beating Auburn. Excuse me Oregon in the twenty eleven College
Football Championship Game. Ohio State beating Oregon in the twenty
fourteen CFP Final, Damian Lillard with his shot that knocked
(15:47):
the Thunder out in twenty nineteen, and then one of
my personal favorites, near and dear to my heart, North
Carolina denying Gonzaga the twenty seventeen college basketball National champions
in all right, yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
For you it is.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
So we are going to discuss this at four o'clock
our favorite non Seattle sports moments of all time and
vote on these at four in the meantime, fun with
audio next on ninety three to three kJ r FL
