Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our nuns up coverage Joe Seahawks training camp continues from
the Virginia Mason Athletics Center, brought to you by Northwest
Handling Systems, and the twenty twenty four Boeing Classic Gaugus
fifth through the eleven, Now Beck to Saftian Dick Gon
Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Did you see the new addition Dick to the Bowing Classic?
By the way, No, your boy kJ choy is coming
up now to take part. Nice pretty cool. Colin Montgomery,
Jose Maria Othable. Have we heard as Freddy playing? Do
we know if he's in?

Speaker 3 (00:35):
We don't know. We don't know yet. That will be
publicized heavily if we find that out.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
We won't miss that announcement. I've already's been battling a
few things kind of off the course, so I don't know.
Hoby's okay, And hope you can get him up here
for the Boeing Classic coming up here in just about
a week or so. But hey, was that a media
day today? Did you get yourself a sandwich? By the way,
they were tasty.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
The Bond Me sandwich, They were fabulous. I had the
chicken and bomb me.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
They were very very tasty, way above my head though. Man,
just give me like a maloney sandwich. I'm just I'm
a happy guy. That's it.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
You don't need the Tye sandwiches. No, it's you know,
a little horse radish in there. Whatever. I'm not a horse,
I gotcha. Are you a hoity toity for you? Huh?
Little little too hoity toity for me, man, no doubt.
But when you're when you're doing interviews and you got
horse radis breath? Hey, Will would it like to come
here from Mississippi State? Had a chance to catch up

(01:30):
with Will Rogers, the new starting quarterback for you dub jetfish,
making it known to everybody that Will Rogers for now
was QB number one. Had a chance to catch up
with him this afternoon.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Do you have any connection history visiting this area at all?

Speaker 5 (01:47):
But I mean, you know, I was recruited to Washington
State out of hospital with Leech so and I was
really really close with Gardner Minshew, who was the quarterback
there in twenty eighteen. So I wasn't able to go
out to pull for a game, but my dad actually
flew out to the Pullman game when they played Oregon
in twenty eighteen college game day because my dad coached

(02:08):
both of us in high school. So that's kind of
the connection, but it's kind of the kind of the opposite.

Speaker 6 (02:14):
You know.

Speaker 5 (02:14):
I never thought in a million years i'd be here,
but I'm so thankful I am. It's been a great
opportunity for me and a great challenge.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
So how much do you take still today from your
time with coach Leech?

Speaker 6 (02:26):
Oh? Things all the time?

Speaker 5 (02:27):
You know, I think about I think about things he
tell me all the time, whether it's you know x's
and o's or you know, stuff in the meeting room
or things like that. You know, just little bits of
knowledge that he would pour onto us every day that
I still think about.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
So what's the craziest thing you ever heard of?

Speaker 6 (02:44):
The say?

Speaker 2 (02:44):
And we can edit this by the.

Speaker 6 (02:45):
Way, Yeah, I don't know. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
I mean there's there's some things that were just kind
of out of the blue that he would say that
you really really didn't expect.

Speaker 6 (02:54):
Him to say. I don't know, man, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (02:57):
You might get me in trouble, So I better plead
the fifth on that one.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Well, is just all the experience you have in college
football a lot of guys here don't have that experience.
How much do you kind of feel like an og
A leader on this team already?

Speaker 5 (03:12):
I definitely do, you know, I think I've had to
earn that over time, obviously being in a new locker
room with new teammates, new guys around me, So I
feel like I've had to earn that.

Speaker 6 (03:20):
But I feel like I've taken a huge step with.

Speaker 5 (03:22):
That from springball in the summer and just trying to
win the team over and earn the respect of the
of the older guys in the locker room.

Speaker 6 (03:29):
So I'm excited.

Speaker 5 (03:30):
H I played played a lot of football and I'm
ready to ready to play for the University of Washington.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
So was there any part of you that wanted to
stay in the SEC to become the all time leading
pastor in the history of that conference you end up
number two?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Is that something you thought about?

Speaker 5 (03:44):
Yeah, a little bit, I'd I'd lie. I'd be lying
if I said it wasn't. So a little bit. But
at the end of the day, this is a decision
that I'm making for myself for years to come as well.
You know, obviously, a record is one thing, and you
know that's that'd be cool to be talk about or whatever.
But you know, I want to play this game for
a really long time and I want to be a professional,
and I think Coach Fish is the best best place

(04:06):
for me right now, if.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
You ask you, you committed to Kaylin and then opened
everything up after he left, and then recommitted fairly quick
to judge staff.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Why why was that?

Speaker 6 (04:16):
Uh from the why did I decommit.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Or why did I recommit? What was it about this
staff that made.

Speaker 6 (04:22):
I think for timeline purposes?

Speaker 5 (04:25):
The reason I recommitted so fast is, you know, I
was just you know, I'm not a big flashy guy.
I don't love the recruiting thing, the whole photo shoots
and all that.

Speaker 6 (04:33):
You know, I'm I'm in this business to play football.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
And so once coach Debora left and I got a
chance to sit down with Coach Fish and kind of
see what his vision was for me and the team
and everything like that. And you know, I mean, I
have one year left, So it's kind of a weird situation.
You know, I don't have two or three years to
kind of you know, learn the offense and develop relationships.
You know, I have one year to kind of get
this thing, right, So it's kind of a weird situation.
And you know, once I was able to sit down

(04:57):
with Coach Fish and you know, talk about that with him,
he was able to talk to my family.

Speaker 6 (05:01):
It was kind of a no brainer.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
So well, will rogers with us, and I just I
just wonder from the surface, it looks like an obvious answer.
You're the starting quarterback at Washington. Nobody transfers from the
SEC to come here to sit on the bench. Do
you feel like though there is a real competition between
you and demon for that for that starting job.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
Well, there's always a competition, you know. I mean that's
the that's the beauty of this this business. You know,
if you don't do your job well, they're going to
replace you. So there's a competition. There's competition every day,
but it's it's healthy competition. I have nothing but good
things to say about Neman. He's a great person, great player,
extremely athletic, and I think he does a great job
and he's got to be a great player for a really,

(05:40):
really long time. But I think competition's healthy and I
look forward to competing every day.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Thanks Man, appreciate it, but I appreciate you move So
it was interesting, Dick for me that you know, normally
when you see a team bring players out for things
like this, they'll bring players out that they want the
media to focus on, right because they know that these
guys are going to play well. Will Rogers was out there,
but so was Demon Williams. That was surprising him. They
brought both those guys out to meet the media this afternoon,

(06:05):
and they brought Landon Hatchet out, who's been banged up
and may not even be ready to go by the
Weaver Steak game. I mean, you look pretty good walking around,
no brace on the knee, he had the ACL blah
blah blah. But I mean I was I was kind
of pleasantly surprised that they brought those guys out, Dave.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
How many years have we been asking why why can't
we talk to freshmen? And Demon Williams shows up on
media day So this is obviously.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
A new adam.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Two freshmen there, so I mean, this is obviously a
new regime with new rules.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
So I absolutely love it.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
But you know, I just I saw those guys in
that room, both on offense and defense, and it just
continued to resonate with me that I think this is
a good football team. And it seems like every turn
people keep trying to tell me how the much they're
gonna struggle and how much a buzz saw the Big
ten is, And I just I see these guys, I'm like,

(07:01):
they are good football players. Yes, there's a huge question
mark on the offensive line, but skill position wise on
both sides of the ball, I think this is a good,
potentially a very good football team.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
Well, I think it's all about the line of scrimmage.
I mean, I'm not breaking new ground with that. I mean,
I'm not a genius here, right. I know I play
one on radio, But.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Guys, it's all about the line of scrimmage. The the
the key to that Husky offense was the best offensive
line maybe in Washington football history, giving Michael Pennix time
to throw, giving NFL caliber wide receivers time to get
downfield where nobody could cover them because Michael had all
day to throw the football. So you know, I was

(07:41):
talking to as a party today off the air, I mean,
I like what I see in him. He's a great
guy to talk to. Engaging for sure. Is the kid
from Ohio State going to be the right tackle is
landon and Memol are going to be your center and
your guard, or excuse me, the kid from Ohoose State
be your right guard, because I think, I think, I
think their best offensive line, when it's all said and done,
is probably going to be as a party at right tackle,

(08:05):
the kid from Ohio State, Vaki is that how you
pronounce his name at right guard, Hatchet at center, Memolar
at left guard, and then any combination of Maximus McCree,
who I think still may be a little bit of
a ways away at left tackle, and then the other guy.
There's a guy whose name I can't pronounce, Ciona Fasalo,

(08:25):
I think is a guy that a lot of people
have talked about as a potential candidate for the left tackle.
So I think I feel better about the right side
right now, Dick, than the left side. And normally you
want to have that flip because you want to protect
Will Rogers blind side. But I don't think there's anything
wrong in this business. I think too many people in
this business want to have a take, whether it's good

(08:45):
or bad. I don't have any idea, Dick, what this
offensive line looks like. Well, and anybody who sits there
and just says, you know, what this line's gonna stink,
They're gonna be terrible, or this line's gonna be phenomenal,
They're gonna be great. How do you know how much
have you watched it as a part? How much have
you watched of this kid from Ohio State? How much
have you watched of this kid Maximus McCree? Only thing

(09:05):
you see is highlights on YouTube, But they're all positive.
You and I and the people watching this team. We
know nothing about these guys, So why are we even trying?

Speaker 3 (09:14):
And I think that's totally fair to have that take,
And what I think is unfair is just to assume
that they're going to be terrible. And I think a
lot of people are just assuming that they're going to
be terrible without any reason to assume they're going to
be terrible other than the fact they just haven't played
here before.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Well, I think, look, yeah, but that's a big one though.
I mean, I mean, look, I saw what you put
on Twitter, and you're exactly right that the offensive line
right now, on paper, is probably the worst unit on
the team. And I think that's a problem. If the
offensive line is the worst unit on the team, that's
an issue because I believe everything starts. I think the
entire football team starts with the offensive line. Everything. It's

(09:53):
to me, it's the most important position out there besides quarterback. Hell,
I could even get away with a subpark quarterback. I
I have a phenomenal offensive line, right, I mean, if
I have a great offensive line giving you know, just
an average Joe time to throw and time for guys
to get open, then yeah, So I mean I would
lean more towards it being an issue than not. But
I also think that again, there's nothing wrong with just

(10:16):
saying we got no clue, we have no idea who's
he gonna eat. I mean, look, Brendan Carroll today was
asked to just give us the first five guys out
of the tunnel tomorrow, and he wouldn't even do it. Yeah,
they wouldn't even do it. He can't even tell you
who the five guys are. I mean, I'm sure maybe
he knows right now who the five guys will be,
but he has no idea if those five guys will
be backups or starters when the year begins. So I

(10:39):
think it's the number one, by a long shot thing
to watch in fall camp how these offensive linemen progress.
As the year goes by, all right, were doing text
by the way, next segment we are four nine four
five one tell themore dude text line. We'll do that.
Coming up. Your thoughts on the Mariner trade deadline deals?
What kind of grade do you give him? And then
John Wilder is gonna join us in five, Dick, you

(11:01):
w had a chance to catch up with Joanah Coleman
as well. At you the media Day. I talked to
Denzel Boston. Will give you more husky coverage at six pm,
but John Wilner coming up at five o'clock. Text next
