Speaker 1 (00:08):
Everywhere we go, people.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Come you fight me way.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
We changed the game. He fell, change me, break away.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
You must divide. We're built to drive. We's up with
gwere upon.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Ras Hey.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Rise up a A.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
He rise up a A. Pada health report, Yes, thank you.
Lead us on the multi multi care health report. Lyndy
and Dolo is still out. Jordan Heineman out with an illness.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Oh it was a really good touch though. Wow, well
that was on live TV. Everybody. That was so great.
We're going to add another name to this home report.
We're going to add another name right there below, Veronica Lescope.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Honestly, can you play the nine?

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I mean that was pretty good, right down to the feet. Hi,
My head is fine. No, yeah, I have to check in. Yeah,
did you go into concussion protocol?

Speaker 1 (01:28):
They actually took me into the tent. I was in
the tent. You checked out in the tent. They brought
me to the tent and I was fine, okay, good,
I'm all good, Yes, ready for ready for another episode
of Rain Weekly. In fact, actually, as I'm in my
very comfy blanket on my comfy couch and my comfy chick,
come out.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, look at you. You got the spot, but I'm
in a colder office.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
I guess I was gonna say that's a very heavy jacket.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Oh yeah, I was outside and now I'm back. But
here I am in this jacket.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Still, this is still fall weather is my favorite weather
when it's like a little bit nippy and I get
to wear like eight sweatshirts. It's literally my favorite. That
safety pharmacy yesterday and I was wearing this hat and
my uggs and a very old woman behind me told
me and that I was adorable and it made.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
My day perfect.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Literally, that's all it takes, is just like one person
to say one nice thing to me, and my day
is just like made.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
I know, don't just try to do that. I feel
like I try to do that. I mean, better somebody,
I know, just like.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Everyone listening, just say one nice thing to somebody, especially
Mariners fans right now, because they're probably really sad.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah, I think I think we're all sad. And I'm
you know, like I don't know baseball well, but I'm sad.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
It's sad. It really is, you know what, the great
season for them and now, but Seattle fans can rest
easy knowing that they have a bunch of other teams
in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yes, well still got rain.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Making and clinching a playoff Berth in what was a huge,
huge game last Friday. Let's dive into that. We'll start
first with, you know, the good stuff, the x's and o's,
and then we can get into some of the goofy,
weird stuff that happened during that game, especially poor forehead.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Oh it's such a good clip, though, I'm.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Going to preempt people laughing at me to laugh at myself.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
I mean, yes, I think anybody anybody would. But also,
you handled it extremely well.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Thank you appreciate it, and so did you guys. I
think you know your laughter and encouragement really helped me
through it.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I didn't ask you if you could maybe step in
and play the nine after you did you did. I
don't definitely cut it. You can't, Okay, totally. I think
you should think about it because it was pretty good. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
I think Jordan Heidema and me Official and those ladies
are a little bit better. They've done it, they've done
it a little longer, and they might specialize in it
a little bit more than me. But you know, maybe
all start YouTube soccer camps. I can start doing the headers.
I can I can be you.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
And we could we could have some video. We can
have some video. We'll play it. We'll be like, this
is how it's done. Take okay, here, take the microphone.
Now you try. We'll do the whole thing.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
You know what it is. It's like remember the movie Dodgeball,
where like the old guy is just like throwing wrenches
at everybody. Like you can dodge a wrench, you can
dodge a ball. If I ever decide to teach being
a siline reporter or be like a teacher, I'm just
gonna do that. That's gonna be my first day of
like the lesson plan. You start with the rent soccer ball.

(04:34):
You can dodge this, you can be on TV.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
You can dodge a wrench. You can dodge a soccer ball.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Exactly, dodge a soccer ball.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
What a brutal intro a wrench. Goodness.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
And the best part is it was during the multi
care health report.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Of course that worked out super well for all of us.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I mean, it honestly looks like we staged it, because
it kind of I was rewatching it. I was just like,
this looks like we staged it.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah, that in the head Yeah, the truth.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Is stranger than fiction. I wish that I had staged that.
I wish I was clever enough to do that. I
am not at all, and I value my face, so
you know I wouldn't have burst it. Just so everyone
knows that was real. All fine, you know it was real,
all right. But the really exciting stuff lou Barnes celebrating
her return, well, celebrating commemorating her amazing retirement from end

(05:27):
of LUSA and professional soccer, although she still has a
lot of games left to play because the Rain clinched
playoff berth, which is so exciting. Missing the playoffs last
year obviously and finishing thirteenth and going from that to
I mean, we could still host a playoff game. We
could still finish in that top four, which is beyond
exciting too. One win over Utah last Friday. Utah, from

(05:52):
what I saw, they came pretty fast out at the gate.
There were some really early chances that they had right away,
and the Rain started sustaining that pressure. Laura, let's talk
through what you saw against Utah on Friday.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Well, the Rain is sitting in that block. I think
Utah just decided they would be aggressive out the gate,
which I mean we saw also from from Bay in
the previous game, and you know, they got they got
in behind a couple of times, a couple of dangerous opportunities.
But yeah, I just we were talking about it on
the broadcast. When these teams are already out, it really

(06:25):
doesn't mean that they're down and out necessarily, right. It
means that they're competing. They're competing for various things. Uh,
they're competing not just for wins this season and a
lot of cases individually, they're competing for you know, next
year in contracts and places on the team. You also
love to be the team that picks off a team
or knocks them out. So all those dynamics come into play,

(06:46):
and I mean I think we saw a lot of those,
not just from Utah but also from the Bay game.
So you know, they came out, they came out to
win it. And you know, the rain, I think we've
we've seen over the last couple of months how they've
started to develop that grit and that belief that if
it's tied late or if they are down, that they
can absolutely come back. And they have that belief now

(07:08):
they've developed it, and frankly that belief is earned, and
so yeah, they know they can do it, and they
did it again.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Super exciting. Yeah, as I said, Utah coming out very
fast out of the gate to keep making a big
save in the second minute and the twenty ninth minute
off of Bianca Saint George, who, by the way, I
watched I googled her just to make sure that I
was pronouncing her last name correctly. And she has an
amazing YouTube channel where she talks about life advice and
wellness and stuff, and I almost like, I almost went
down a rabbit hole. So Bianca, good for you. I

(07:39):
agree so much of what you're saying, So keep keep
it up. We need more young ladies with really cool
wellness tips. So you're awesome. Unfortunately, we did beat your team,
and you were the reason why we got that PK
from Sophia Aguerta. We can talk through that penalty. I
think we thought there was some sinanigans going on because
Coco was the first one to go grab the ball,

(08:01):
then Sofia was the one who took it. Kellen, I
really wanted Louke Barnes to take that PK obviously, just
you know, for the storyline and for the you know
for the flowers, which she got plenty of flowers and
congratulations to her, but and Sophia nailing that pk uh,
it did kind of look like there might be some
like gamesmanship going on though.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Absolutely. Yeah, I mean at that point in the game
and with the game tied and all the dynamics going on, Yeah,
I mean we've seen that a lot. I feel like
it's happened even maybe more so. And then in the
past this year, just with people, you know, they'll somebody
will go grab the ball. It won't be then, it'll
be the taker, it'll be somebody else. Keep it will
come up. I mean, we had all the things right
and keep hen there. They'll act like they're going to

(08:40):
but they're not going back. You know, people encroach, people
do it all kinds of things just to delay and
get the edge, get the mental edge. But in the end,
you know, you've got somebody like Sophia Huerta, and there's
a lot of people on the team that can step
up and take that, and the team would have wholehearted
belief and in every single one of them. She couldn't
have placed it any better, and she ran right to
lou So all the dynamics came into play and it

(09:03):
was just a great moment for the Rain.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
What was your PK style, Laura, back when you were playing.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
I didn't necessarily like pick a spot. I would kind
of I think a lot of things that I did
would be based on reads, and I think pks were
no different. I didn't always take them. I mean I
think that during my career, sometimes I was the best
person to take it and sometimes I wasn't. Yeah, but
I mean that was really it. It was just trying to
see where the goalkeeper was going to move, and then

(09:32):
you know, you have to do your best to place
it in the corner, like Sophia did. I mean, you
can't place it any better.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
Do you spend a ton of time in training practicing pks?
Is that something that or is it more of a
to the side type of deal, Like, is that something
that officially actually happens in training?

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Oh, it does happen. I mean we even saw it.
I don't know. I don't know how many people were there,
but I was at the the friendly game that the
Rain played against the Thorns, and when they played down
in Portland, after full time, they went to pks. I
guess if that was the decision that the coaches were
going to make, and so they wanted to I'm sure
you know, you want to see that pressure both teams have.

(10:07):
Young teams want to be in that environment and have
them feel that. And the Rain did very well there.
But you know, it's just you. You can't quite and
that's why you do it in that situation as a coach,
is that you can't kind of recreate the pressure. You
can't recreate what's going to happen, how you feel. Sometimes
you predetermine the order, sometimes it changes, sometimes you go

(10:28):
to six, seven eight. I mean there's a lot of
dynamics to it, but I mean when you get down
to it, everybody who's a professional in this game can
hit a spot from twelve yards away. But then there's
a goalkeeper and then there's the pressure and there's all
the things. So it just comes down to focus and
mentality and getting it done.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Yeah, Sophia definitely feels like the right person obviously for that.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
The lot of there's a lot of people on this
team that feel like they actually.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
Are That's true, there are a lot and going into
the postseason, i mean everyone talks about how young an inexperienced.
This team is, but there's really a lot of gamers
which is awesome, and a lot of you know, young
players who have a lot of experience. And look at
I mean Maddie Dollen. All of her goals have been
game winners, which is.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yes, I mean, what a game for her. I mean,
I you know, we can acknowledge the mistake on the
Utah goal, but but then again, she was creating all
these opportunities and doing so well. And then you know,
I think anybody who is as competitive and talented as
she is did exactly what. She didn't come back and
get the assists. She didn't stopped being aggressive, it didn't
deter she was just you know, she was going to

(11:28):
keep going. And I think we saw we saw the
best of Mattie Dollien in that game moving forward and
what a great assist and Mcammon on the first goal
for her, congratulations.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
I know, good for her. That was awesome off of
Maddie Dollan cross. And yes, Mattie Dollan did sort of
cause that turnover for the goal, but she almost had
the pace to go back, which is crazy.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
It's wild. I mean, yes, she is very paisy. I mean,
I love her deception and the way she moves on
the ball. I'm really excited to see her moving forward,
not just this year, which hopefully play unto the end,
but you know, just the coming years. I think she's
gonna continue to be a real force in this league.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
Yeah, listening to her awareness on you know, certain decisions
she makes, just the way she plays with her body
and the way that she angles herself. I mean, she
it's almost like she can see what's going on in
slow motion. She's able to, like fully, you know, have
that body awareness, which as a non app professional athlete,
I just find so impressive that like mind body connection
is I mean, bottle that up and sell that to people,

(12:27):
because that's an insane superpower to have. Truly, Uh, what
are other players of the game. I feel like Matti
Mircado also had a great game, uh stepping in there
with Jordan Heineo with her illness obviously and you know,
creating chances. She created that PK opportunity, which is awesome.
I think she had a great game. Sophia a great game.
Lou Barnes almost scoring off of that Jordan bug cross

(12:50):
and then the crossbar. Gosh darn it undefeated. Bars are
just undefeated. They're just undefeated. But I mean, overall, a
really good performance. I mean, any other thoughts on this
Utah win, this win we had over them.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yeah, you mentioned Mercado, and I mean to come to
come in to the team as she has and to
be as prepared as she is and to take the
time when she was away to continue to develop and
be be prepared. I mean, you really have to hats
off to her, because that's harder to do than I
think it may seem because you step into a group
and are you familiar with people and all that, sure,

(13:27):
but you haven't been getting all the reps with everybody,
you haven't been around the group, and it seemed like
she just plugged back in. Yeah, which was which was awesome.
So that was really fun to watch. And then of
course I think in this game, as we have, we
have to go hats off to Lou I mean, coming
in starting, you know, playing as much as she did
and being such a staple in the back line forever.

(13:50):
It was a great day of celebration there. So yeah,
I mean there were a lot of high points in
this game.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
Those shirts with her face on them, the way that
her silhouette look I mean, that is a dream silhouette.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
It looked like it looked like she belonged to when
we're joking about this up in the booth, but that
she looked like she belonged on Mount Rushmore.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
From that, I mean, that is the coolest most Mount
Rushmore of I mean, that is what she looked like.
But it was so flattering, like I wish that my
silhouette would look like that. I that's off to you,
Lou Barnes. You made the best T shirts of all time, Like,
congratulations to you.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
The list did you see amazing? Amazing?

Speaker 1 (14:31):
And or thank you for wearing the shirt on air?

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Oh proudly anytime.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
Yeah, but no, I mean that entire game was completely
about Lou Barnes as well it should have been. I
remember in the postgame interview, I asked Sophia immediately, Sofia,
werto was the postgame interview? Just Hey, you guys made
the postseason She's like, yeah, but this game is all
about Lou today, and I just want to talk about
Lou Barnes. And I mean that is a testament to
probably her humility as a human, because the humblest people

(14:58):
are the ones that everyone want to sell it right.
Everyone wants to celebrate those people because they won't celebrate themselves.
And I think that that's just you know, a testament
to her character and who she is as a human being,
just as an outside perspective for me, and you know,
speaking to people who know her very well, I think
that they would agree with all of that. So very
very cool.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Hey, hey rid up.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Hey, hey, al right, just some final insights about this
matchup before we move on. Seattle Rain are undefeated in
their last four games in NWSL. Mattie Dline has assisted
four goals in the NWSL this season, which is the
most of any Rain player. Lou Barnes' final home regular
season match of her career, She's called it storybook, a

(15:57):
storybook career. Congratulations her once again. And just to look
at some of the numbers. We had a one point
five to one expected goals versus their point eight four.
They outshot us thirteen to eleven. Both teams had four
shots on target, but total big chances was three to
one for US. So I know that the numbers don't
always tell the story, especially with soccer. It's sort of

(16:17):
one of those sports where it's like, is my eye
test workingers the numbers, but those kind of felt accurate,
especially the big chances. I think that that sort of
was the difference. All Right, NWSL news standings and decision day,
so much going on. We now know that we will
be playing Orlando on November two at two pm. Rain

(16:39):
joined Case Spirit Orlando, San Diego, Gotham and Portland as
the only teams to clinch a spot in the playoffs.
The final spot will be between NC Courage and Louisville.
Who do you see having the edge there? And I
will give you their matchups. Louisville is going to be
playing Bay at home. Louisville will be at home and

(17:02):
and see Courage are they playing? Yes, they are playing
at home versus Gotham. So two tough matchups for both
both of those teams. Who do you think it's that
final spot?

Speaker 2 (17:14):
It's tough? I know, I you know. I started looking
at this particular scenario about three weeks ago, and I
thought it was going to be Louisville and North Carolina.
And I still am a little bit unsure between who's
gonna end up eight and nine. I'm gonna go with
given previous game performance, maybe North Carolina. Yeah, so Louisville.

(17:38):
I mean, neither one would shock me. Louisville's been I mean,
not gonna run the second latter half of the season.
They've been playing lights out. They've had some really good
moments and they've had to claw to get you know,
where they are now. So but I'm gonna go ahead.
And that's tough, though I know it's tough.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
I don't know toss up. I honestly think it's.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Toss up totally, but I I'll I'll just go with
North Carolina.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
I'm gonna say Louisville because I'm wearing a purple hat.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
Oh oh oh, We're going with our hat color.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
We're going with our hat colors. Actually it worked out
very well there was It wasn't a scientific no, not
scientific at all, not scientific at all. Seattle Ragin, we
do not know whether we will be hosting a home
playoff game. Yet. We can finish anywhere between third and
seventh place right now. Uh, Kansas City, pretty bad news

(18:30):
coming out of their team, unfortunately showinga hurt. She's reporting
as an adductor injury. She will not be traveling for
her international duty, but no timeline in the team haven't
announced anything. I mean, that is kind of the worst
possible thing to happen to Kansas City, considering they just
are coasting into the playoffs. And then you know, the MVP,

(18:51):
the potential MVP of the league on their team getting hurt.
Not ideal, I have an ideal.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
No, And then I mean, and this is just intriguing
as a story line and both you know, like I
love watching both of these players. You mentioned showingo with
the injury, but also we got Washington and second with
Rodman out currently yeah, good shot. Yeah, and obviously also
Orlando has had their their injuries as well. It's that

(19:17):
part of the year where you know, managing and trying
to get people back and saving legs. But yeah, there's
some dynamics that are making this playoff picture a little
bit different than I guess we thought it might be.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
So let's just like take the standings, let's take the
seating out. If you could pick playground style, we want
to play you.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
Honestly, I want the Thorns at home. I mean that
when I first had that feeling, it was when I
watched the friendly in Portland, and I was like, because
the pea case came up and I go, well, that's
interesting because I could be a playoff matchup. And then
I was like hmm, and I was like, but this
isn't I was like, this is I see like I'm
doing all the math, right, I'm like, okay, we're away,
We're here. We see what this feel was like, let's
right in case in scenarios, I was like, all right,

(20:03):
and young team like all the thanks, and I was
just like that would be interesting.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
And then you know, I just let it just kind
of sat. Now, this is your particular brain. You're using
your producer brain, right, is that what we call it.
That's what I call it, the producer brain. It's the
whole Like, okay, the best if this were a movie, right,
We're a movie and I could like create all the
storylines and do what the most dramatic, amazing moment would be.

(20:28):
That's producer brain.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
So you are, and I mean listen, Like one of
my favorite things about calling games and being a part
of broadcast team and just about you know, like just
following the game is that the games are stories. Every
game is a story, Every season is a story, and
it's pulling those things out and it's just watching for like, oh,
like I see what it's building, or I see I

(20:51):
see what's happening and seeing how those things play out,
because that's where the dramatics are and that's where you know,
all the the interesting things happened. So I just think
that scenario would be a lot of fun, and I
think that the storyline would be would be one to.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
Watch, especially when we get to win. That's gonna be
so much fun. All right, manifesting it. We're gonna start
manifesting it. We're already there. I'm at the game right
now and we're winning three to one, and the final
whistle is blowing after fifteen minutes of weird stoppage time.
Because that's just because that's happened happening your half. This
is just purely me talking out of my butt right now.

(21:25):
But it's fine. We're on sports radio. We're allowed to
talk out of our buts. If you're gonna have a
forty five minute half, maybe it's just a forty five
minute half. I get that it's like an ongoing clock
and all of those things, and yes, there should be
a couple minutes to account for that, but like eleven
minutes of stoppage time at the end of a game.
It take to me as a viewer, it takes away

(21:48):
the dramatics of waiting for it to hit.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
Ninety, right, Yeah, I am.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
Just from you were perspective, not from a competition one,
not from a fairness one, because obviously fairness we should
include all of the time. Yeah, the producer brain in
me is just like, but when it hits ninety, it
should be like two more minutes. Maybe.

Speaker 2 (22:07):
Well, it's interesting to think about how it would change
the game. Yeah, And Kellen and Steve and I once
had a conversation about what if the halves were shorter.
It was related to, you know, in baseball.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no, I'm curious.

Speaker 2 (22:18):
Like what the conversation was, what would you do to
speed up the game, or how would you change the
sport of soccer like in baseball speeding up pitching. And
we were talking about the impacts of the game if
you made the have shorter or if you got rid
of stoppage time, And yeah, I think I think it
would change it actually quite a lot. I mean think
of I mean, just as an extreme example, if you

(22:39):
played thirty five minute halves, think of how much faster
that game could be, just because you're you know, it's
twenty minutes less that you're you're out there running around,
so I think it would change the game drastically.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
Uh, all right, Laura, I have a pretty I think
it's a fun game. Planned to wrap this up. Oh
and it's sort of an inside joke. But for anyone
who's been listening to US, UCLA and USC have no
continued to come up.

Speaker 2 (23:07):
Over and over again. I don't think I'm prepared.

Speaker 1 (23:11):
So I came up with some trivia questions and you
have to guess whether it's U s C U c
l A.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
Oh, I don't think I'm gonna be good at this.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
All women's soccer. It's all women's soccer questions and I
only put like four of them because U c l
A has a well you know, and I'm not no spoilers, Okay, spoilers,
all right. U c l A, U s C are both.
This team has two national titles in their history.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
USC they both Doka, you were not wrong, but I
was not wrong.

Speaker 1 (23:50):
It is both. It is both, Okay, all right, I
forgot that I put this one on here. That's why
I started laughing.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
What did you do?

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
