and by Provident Swedish official healthcare partner of Seattle Sounders FC.
The Sounders FC postmatch show starts now.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
This is the Sounders FC postmatch Show, Sounders FC Soccer
presented by Providence Swedish official healthcare partner of Sounders FC.
I'm mishel Ledcow alongside Pete Fewing and we will be
breaking down this one nil win Seattle over RSL in
a moment. But for now, let's first go down to
the pitch where we find Brad Evans with Jackson Reagan.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Brad, Yeah, thanks Michelle Jackson obviously last homegular season game
fan appreciateation night two.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
What does it mean to get a victory tonight? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:06):
It feels great and I mean big shout out to
all the fans for staying out through the rain. It's
not the best weather, but you know, we appreciate them
showing out all year and they've been super helpful for
us and making this a fortress.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
All right, talk about tonight's game, How did you feel overall? Obviously,
first half came out hot, looked like it was going
to be three or four nothing in the first half,
and then RSL fighting for their lives change the game
a little bit.

Speaker 6 (01:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:27):
I think it's credit to them for responding. But I
think you know, we got to be better and put
teams away and really put our foot on the throat,
on their throat, and you know, that's we're gonna have
to do in the playoffs if we're gonna we want.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
To keep going.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Yeah, and then you head to New York City next
week to finish out the season. But in the playoffs
once again, what does it mean to again get.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Back into the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (01:52):
Yeah, I mean, as you know, it's it's kind of
an expectation here, but still something to celebrate because it's
not it's not easy. You know, a lot of teams
don't make it. So you know, we're celebrating it, but
at the end of the day, I mean we just
making it's not enough.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Can you learn anything from from this season, League's Cup,
Club World Cup heading into these playoffs and make sure
you have a good run.

Speaker 5 (02:13):
Yeah, I think we've learned that it just takes takes
the whole group. I think, no, no one person's gonna
win it for us, No one person's gonna lose it
for us. It's gonna take, you know, all eleven people
and everyone on the bench, and everyone's showing up and
putting in the work together.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
All right, Thanks Jackson, Congratulations, awesome season.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
Way to close it out. Back up to you guys.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Thank you Brad, and thank you Jackson. I love that line.
No one person is gonna win it or lose it
for us. What a great motto for the Sounders and
one I think that they're so clear and we really
saw it tonight as they had a modified lineup for
the Sounders getting their win one nil over RSL. As
we are on international break, the Sounders without nine of

(02:53):
their regular starters, either due to injury, people playing internationally,
or suspension. Again, I'm Michelle alongside Pete's coach. Your initial
impressions of this one, well, I.

Speaker 7 (03:03):
Liked his comments too. I like the stump on the throat. Yes,
coming from a center back, that one I feel.

Speaker 8 (03:09):
Actually, Craig Wible is the first time I ever heard
that with his five mls cup rings.

Speaker 7 (03:14):
But he's right.

Speaker 8 (03:15):
You for the playoffs, you've got to have that mentality
that you're going to close people teams out and put
them away, and it's going to take a lot of
players to do that. This was a great win, not
pretty right, and it was tense at the end, and
we got a little bit of luck because v A
r gave us a penalty kick there Vaar called back
a goal for against us for us again then and

(03:39):
then against us as well. So yeah, it was a
It was a gritty effort and it had to be.
And and then I said to you a few minutes ago,
we start the season in the pouring down rain, and
then we end the season. I mean it is buckets
right now, uh, a pouring down rain. So good for
the Sounders to hang on and find a way to
get a win. And then guess what, Michelle, pretty soon

(04:00):
we're gonna have Reed Baker Whiting, We'll be back, Snyder,
Bnell will be back, We'll get Georgie Manoongal will be back.
Christian Moldon, Albert rusnik knew Who and Obid Vargas Right.
Obi Vargas named the top player under top number one
player under the age of twenty two. Right, they picked

(04:21):
twenty five guys under the age of twenty two. Obed
was number one. So we're gonna get all those guys back, right,
And so that's a great thing. So sometimes you know,
I know, Brian Schutzer right now will say, hey, we
won the game. Let's get ready for New York. Right,
we did the job that had to be done. And
you earn your luck in this game. You absolutely earn
your luck. So I'm proud of the guys that stuck

(04:44):
it out and RSL made it tough at the end
of the first half and made it really tough probably
the last fifteen minutes of the second half.

Speaker 9 (04:52):
They did they did.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
They made the Sounders work for this one to come
away with the one will one nil win And it's
now time for our Emerald Queen Casino play of the match, just.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
Wins it good.

Speaker 10 (05:03):
Nick White, Jordan Morris, Here's Morris inside the books, cuts
it back, Bull bets on.

Speaker 7 (05:07):
Rock Rock want to stop for the.

Speaker 10 (05:11):
Sounders and of course celebrate in the League Cup title.
It has to be Paul roth Rope against the Sounders
going in this game one nil Sounders.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
It came in the fourth minute. That was Paul Rothrock
the opening goal, the lone goal of this one off
the Jordan Morris assist, his fourth goal of the season
made it one nil Sounders. Paul Rothrock. That goal is
our play of the match, presented by Emerald Queen Casino,
the betting capital of the Northwest. And now coach you
mentioned it. We had some concerns going into this one.

(05:45):
We heard it on Danny's call there they dropped the
banner tonight celebrating League's Cup championship. The last time we
did something like this it was before Portland. We weren't
able to get the win in that one. We were
able to get it tonight, but you and I were
a little nervous about how the players would kind of
rebound from that high to refocus back in. But by
the way that this team started off, yeah, that didn't

(06:06):
seem to be a concern. But I think as we
look forward, how do we keep our foot on the
gas to really close out the rest of the season
and really make a run in the post season.

Speaker 8 (06:14):
Well sixteen of the seventeen years this team's been in
the postseason. As Jackson Reagan just said, that's not the goal.

Speaker 7 (06:20):
The goal is to go win the MLS Cup.

Speaker 8 (06:23):
And I think based on what they did in the
League's Cup, based on the depth of this squad and
the variety of talent that can come and contribute at
different times, I think they have an expectation. I don't
think there's a team in the league that wants to
play against the Seattle Sounders. Going back to the goal
real quick, I know Jordan Morris is sick about missing it,
but we don't get that goal if Jordan Morris doesn't

(06:45):
defend and jump on the ball, penetrate into the box
and then cut the ball back across. So I know
he's going to be super disappointed that he didn't get
that one.

Speaker 7 (06:54):
He had a couple other chances.

Speaker 8 (06:55):
He did have a very nice assist on a goal
that was called back. There's some positives that Jordan, I
hope will look at and say okay, right, because because
he doesn't, that goal does not get created without Jordan
Morris doing the defending. Reminded me of Messi's goal at
Miami on the first goal where Christen Roldan had a
heavy touch MESSI stripped him right away, draws three defenders,

(07:18):
plays it to albut's in the back of the net.

Speaker 7 (07:20):
The same thing right there. Jordan Morris gets.

Speaker 8 (07:22):
It, brings everybody to him, plays it across for an
easy tap in for and actually not an easy tap
and those are very easy to miss.

Speaker 7 (07:29):
Yeah, and he had two of those unfortunately, one call
back yes.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
And for Morris, you know, we just want to get
him back to full strength as he's continuing to do
this coming back from injury. Get him back to full
ninety minutes fits. It's all trending in the right direction,
So a positive there now. Delta Airlines is proud to

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Home match of the season. The Sounders and the pouring
down rain get the win over Real Salt Lake one
nil thanks to the Paul Rothrock goal. And with that
we want to talk about your local Toyota dealers who
are proud to present tonight's man of the match. And
who else would it be? Pete viewing Paul Rothrock. Yes,
our goal, Paul. We have Paul, they have Messy, we

(11:53):
have Paul. I actually would really like that on a
T shirt. I think we could get that, I'm sure made.
But he had a fantastic game tonight, his fourth goal
of the season. He should have had a fifth, but
he was called off sides and it was called back.
But he played a full ninety minutes on a night
where Brian Schmitzer needed his starting eleven to go as
long in his heart as they could, given that they
were out nine typical starters, given that it was the

(12:16):
international break going on. But what did you like from
his play and just kind of the development of him
well this season as we're getting ready for the postseason.

Speaker 7 (12:23):
Yeah, you touched on it.

Speaker 8 (12:24):
You know that you raise the banner and then can
there be a distraction? Can that elevated team? Can it
take a team's you know, mind off the game, Paul
Rothrock made sure that the team was going right from
the whistle because he within a minute he had gone
down the line. And you know, we didn't say DeAndre
Yedlin's name too much. DeAndre Edlin was a pretty darn
good defender. And Paul Rothrock took him inside, took him outside,

(12:48):
took him to the endline, got crosses in. So Paul
really jump started the offense at the very beginning of
the game. And he had a couple of chances just
so active, right, and he doesn't do the same thing
over and over. It's not always going to the inline
and cutting it back. He'll come inside, hit the bender
with his right foot, He'll go on the dribble if

(13:09):
he needs to go on the dribble. He can take
people on. He can play one and two touch balls.
He does, and he does the hard work. You know,
next time I see him, I'm gonna tell him, Paul,
you're fit.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
Because he was he is.

Speaker 7 (13:20):
He is fit. I mean he's.

Speaker 8 (13:22):
Christian rolled on. Yeah, twenty five year old Christian rolled
on fit, right. I mean he was getting up and
I dream about Yeah, I don't remember that fitness anymore.

Speaker 7 (13:31):
But but I mean it was it was eighteen to eighteen.

Speaker 8 (13:34):
And uh, and then get stuck in on the tackles
and Paul is hard to play against, so but he
he jumps out of the team getting him right away,
and then and Jordan Morris again getting that crossing. But
Paul's in the right spot as well. You have to
you have to get back and defend, but you also
have to get on the end of crosses and sometimes
guys don't do that extra five or six yards.

Speaker 7 (13:55):
So Paul deserves a Man of the match.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
In my book, he is our man of the match.
And it's it's amazing because he's had so many contributions
in such a short amount of time and made such
a big impact so quickly that it's hard to remember
that at one point in time, not too long ago,
he was a new up and comer himself, a new name,
just looking for an opportunity and getting a chance to
show what he could do. And tonight was a chance

(14:17):
for several other players that were coming in off the
bench as substitutions. First, a player that we have seen
before in Stuart Hawkins. He came in in the second half.
What did you think about his performance.

Speaker 8 (14:29):
I thought he was good. I thought he was good
in the air. I thought he blocked one shot. He
and Stephan Fry went for a ball. He got out
of STEP's way, which is very good and not a
guarantee for a young player coming onto the field. I
thought he looked composed. He's put on a little bit
of weight. We've watched him be a pretty gangly young
player coming out, and he's starting to I saw him
at training yesterday and I said, hey, you put on

(14:51):
six or seven pounds and he goes, yes.

Speaker 7 (14:53):
I know, thank you.

Speaker 8 (14:54):
So he's getting there, and you know, he was doing
very well. That's a very difficult group to break in
between Reagan, Yamar kim Key, he bell right, and then
and then the young kid right, Stuart Hawkins.

Speaker 7 (15:07):
So he did well.

Speaker 8 (15:08):
He and Brian Smetszer said yesterday when the coaches were
talking about, you know, Kenny get some time, Brian was
very confident in him. And that's one of the gifts
that coach Smetzer does for these young guys is he
gives them confidence. But I thought I thought Stuart looked
the part.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Don't you wish? That was the reaction people had to
us of like the excitement of hey, have you put
on six pounds, This is amazing. Good for you.

Speaker 7 (15:29):
I wish I had that kind of Yeah you had
a kid, I don't have any excuse you got a
little one.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
Well now we also got to see Tino Lopez for
the first time tonight and Peter Kingston, who I know
you have a very special connection with.

Speaker 8 (15:41):
Yeah, we recruited Peter to Seattle. You and played two
years for US and was a very talented player and
switched went to the Huskies and and did a great
job for the U dub as well. So he's a
great kid. He's he has two children himself, and so
I was really excited to couple pictures of him and
while he was playing and sent him to him and

(16:02):
to to some of his teammates. So you always love
these good stories. Here's a good one on Peter Kingston.
So he Somemamish, right, That's where he grew up. And
then he would ride the bus to downtown Seattle, and
then from downtown Seattle he would transfer to go to
Starfire and he would sometimes be late because the bus
was the bus was late, and so he was in
the academy and they would be screaming at him because

(16:24):
he's late, and he would take it and he would
he wouldn't say, no excuse, that's not Pete Kingston. So
so Peter didn't say anything. And then one day someone
from the staff said do you ride the bus to
get here? And he said yeah? And they said where
from Smamish to Seattle? Seattle here? And so they never
yelled at him again, but he never he never made
an excuse. And uh, and so I'm very and academically

(16:48):
he came in uh and really took his academics very
like Alex Roldan and Christian and Morris, Jordan Morris, all
those guys.

Speaker 7 (16:56):
Jackson.

Speaker 8 (16:56):
We got a lot of smart guys in roth Rock.
They were all really good students. And Peter I think
graduated with above a three to five at the UB.
So I think he's maybe up one more quarter to go.
But anyway, great and he did.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
A Charcter too, absolute story coach. I absolutely love him.

Speaker 7 (17:12):
He wants to make something of himself, right.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
You know what well he took. I mean in so
many capacities he already is, but he took another step
forward on that tonight.

Speaker 7 (17:20):
On the field, he was good on the field. He
was good on the field.

Speaker 8 (17:23):
He created a couple of things, and he was confident,
and he was on the right hand side and Michelle,
he took off and took people on and then played
the ball wide. Give him another week or two and
he will not play that ball while and he'll go
to goals.

Speaker 7 (17:35):
So he was good. I thought he did a good job.

Speaker 2 (17:37):

A message from Sound Transit. You're listening to the home.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
Of Sounders FC Seattle's sports radio nine fifty KJR.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
With the one nil win Sounders over RSL Seattle still
finds themselves in fifth place in the Western Conference, but
they're now up to fifty two points. It looks like
they're pretty much going to stay in fifth place. Vancouver's
locked in at first with sixty three. San Diego's currently
it's sixty in second place. Lafc's fifty nine and Minnesota

(21:42):
is fifty eight in third and fourth place, respectively, So
we'll have to keep an eye on those two because
those two kind of could switch. So if the season
was to end today, we would be playing Minnesota in
the first round of the playoffs. But there is a
chance if Minnesota jumps LAFC, we could be playing LAFC
in the playoffs. But again, Seattle with fifty two points
sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Next

(22:06):
below them in sixth is Austin with forty four, So
pretty secure right there now. Next up for Seattle, the
Sounders head to the Big Apple to take on New
York City FC a week from today on October eighteenth.
Make sure to watch that match via the MLS Pass
app on the Apple TV app and listen on nine

(22:26):
to fifty kjar or l ray sixteen or thirteen sixty am.
Those are the Providence Swedish Ooh, I'm totally butchering this coach.
The Providence Swedish pre match show starts at two thirty. Oh,
let's pass my bedtime. Oh, where's Jackson Feltz when we
need him here? He nails that not too I'm proud

(22:48):
on that one, but yes, So if you could understand
my jumbled mush right there, Sounders play next week next
Saturday in New York, taking on New York City FC,
and you can start listening and watching at two thirty
pm local time. So coach, New York City FC, Eastern
Conference opponent. They are also in fifth place in the

(23:09):
Eastern Conference standings, locked in for the postseason. What do
you expect from that match? You know, big cross country
road trip to close out the season. At this point,
New York could jump up to fourth place in the standings,
so they've got a little bit extraoph maybe yeah, but
a big, a big match to close it out.

Speaker 7 (23:30):
Well, a couple things.

Speaker 8 (23:31):
One, they're tied with Charlotte for fifty six points, right,
and Charlotte's in fourth there and fifth. If they can
make that jump, they get the home field advantage. And
you really have a home field advantage when you play
because you're playing at Yankee Stadium. And I remember we
did a game out there and that during the warm up,
I said, oh, it doesn't look that small, and then
once the game started and you got twenty two guys
on the field, it looks very small. It looks like

(23:52):
you should really be playing nine or ten against nine
or ten.

Speaker 7 (23:57):
It shouldn't. It's a very tight space.

Speaker 8 (24:00):
I coached a team kids at Puma's and we played
on a very small field and it was to our advantage.
So when you go there, you're playing in a much
different it's a tighter space, and so you've got to adjust.
But boy, that's been the story of this team, right.
There's so many different variables between you know, different places
where you play. Obviously a time zones and rosters changing

(24:22):
almost weekly. I bet I think we're in like forty
six games, and I bet we've had forty different starting
e level.

Speaker 7 (24:28):
But they've got some talent.

Speaker 8 (24:30):
Martinez up front seventeen goals, Wolf has eleven goals.

Speaker 7 (24:33):
So it'll be a test.

Speaker 8 (24:35):
It'll be a test, I mean, and again they've got
What we're trying to do is the same as what
we did tonight, which is get some momentum going into
the playoffs. Hopefully we'll have a couple of players back
by then, but we'll certainly have Albert pack for sure.
And then for New York, they've got a chance to
get that home field. Everybody wants that home field. I
can't imagine that the Mariners were fired up to win

(24:56):
last night and be playing tomorrow in Toronto.

Speaker 2 (25:00):
That's better than not playing at all, question way better
than staying a hall there. And obviously it's kind of
hard to evaluate the performance tonight and look ahead of like, Okay,
well what do we need to see because it might
be a completely different lineup and I actually anticipate it
to be because we'll be getting several plays shaped back exactly.
So I guess with that in mind, coach, what would
you hope for this team to do next week to

(25:22):
close out the year on a high note.

Speaker 7 (25:25):
They had a really good practice this last week.

Speaker 8 (25:27):
There's a lot of joy in the club, and there
it was very competitive, Brian Schmetzer said. Andy Rose did
a great job of Match Day minus one, creating a
competition guys for yelling at each other and fighting with
each other in a great way, in a competitive, cohesive way,
which is what coaches want. Coaches were smiling after yesterday's training,
So they want another week of that, right And the

(25:49):
nice thing is we're not playing until next weekend, right,
so and they'll go out two days early so get healthy,
recover from this one, and then go out and they've
got to continue to work on finding a rhythm and
clicking and finishing right. And but now it comes down
to after New York. You know, Brian Schweitzer, the nic

(26:10):
thing is he's got weapons on the sidelines, He's got
he has got a luxury of being able to bring
players in and bring players out and not have anything
drop off and actually have things get better.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Isn't a great luxury to have.

Speaker 9 (26:24):
He has earned it.

Speaker 7 (26:25):
The whole staff has earned what they've created.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
Absolutely well, that does it for us here tonight the
Sounders on top of Real Salt Lake one nil and
their regular season home finale. Like I said, they will
be back next week as they take on New York
City FC. Well for Danny, Steve, Brad Pete and myself
and our entire production crew, I'm Michelle Ledka saying thank

(26:50):
you so much for joining us, and have a good
night
