Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Sounders FC Postmatt Show. Sounders FC Sucker
is brought to you by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner
of Seattle Sounders FC. The Sounders FC Postmatt Show starts.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Now, Well, that was a game, and that was a
situation that we may never see again. And I'm not
talking about the score line Sounders beating the Columbus.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Crew by a score of four to nothing.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
The unique situation is that for the entire second half
Columbus played without a goalkeeper and that was a absolute craziness.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
We talked about it at the halftime show.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Get ready to watch shot, shots and more shots, and
that is exactly what we saw. A lot of shots
and a lot of goals and another Sounders hat trick.
It is unusually the third hat trick against the Columbus
crew for Seattle.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Blaze Nikufo, Albert Rusnick.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Tonight and Diego I needed your help one moment, ago
Ela my Niegel Lamar Nagel twenty eleven.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
How about that?

Speaker 2 (00:58):
So three hat tricks against column and Albert gets it tonight.
It's the first hat trick for Seattle since Jordan Morris
was against Sporting Kansas City last year and this was
a game diego that listen, we we can talk about
the goals, the uniqueness of it. Three for Albert, one
for Jordan. I think we need to take this first
segment of the postmatch show and just talk about the

(01:20):
situation itself, and if you're just joining us, if you
didn't see what happened right before halftime. This was right
at the start of added time in the first half.
There was a ball over over the top to Jordan Morris.
Abraham Romero was the loan goalkeeper on Columbus. Today, emphasize
on the word loan. Abraham Romero comes about twenty yards

(01:43):
outside of his goal, collides with Jordan Morris, his forearm
goes into Jordan's face. That was a serious foul play.
That's a red card for Columbus's keeper.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Remember that word loan.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Right he is sent off and Columbus does not have
another goalkeyp So they had to put a midfielder, Seant
Zowatski in goal for the remaining minutes of the first
half and the entirety of the second half. That is
basically a situation for Columbus where the midfielder Zawatski was

(02:16):
obviously not comfortable at all.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
The first shot he.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Has to face is the free kick from Rusnak. It
goes in the back of the net. It's one nothing.
They basically basically plays Zawatski is like a you know,
a as Kellen Rose said during the game, a hockey goaltender.
In the second and late in the game where they
have to pull the goalkeeper, Zawatski plays about forty yards
outside of his goal in possession, he's way at a position,

(02:40):
he's way uncomfortable, and we see three more goals go
in the.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Back of the net.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
But it is a situation diego where Columbus had to
play an entire half of soccer without a goalkeeper, and
it went about is what we expected. But the uniqueness
of the situation was just incredible to watch. Just that
we're watching history, watching something that we may never see again.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
Yeah, no, it's crazy because also for people to understand, right,
so you're talking about the loan goalkeeper. Also considering this
this window and this particular weekend, it's an international window
for FIFA, so there's a lot of players that are out,
including one of the goalkeepers for the Columbus grew right,
So it's like all of those factors that actually play

(03:25):
into the sounders favor with that play. It's a good
point because changes, right.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
You're right, yeah, one keeper on international duty, one keeper
who was injured, Romero is their third and boom.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
Yeah and exactly right. If we have like a window,
then we have like at least you know Romero probably
you know of course being on the bench. But I
think with that factor it also changes. And also we
were talking about it of when we're like during the break,
like how unique is soccer compared to other sports? That
goalkeeping is such a unique position that no matter how

(03:57):
you years you play as a field play here, you're
never gonna have those skills to be a go like
a professional goalkeeper in this type of scenario. Right, And
you saw how the words he didn't know. I mean, yeah,
ever I can play goalkeeper, but he didn't have the
technique to save some and we saw like the first

(04:17):
opportunity he had it was a goal right in that
free kick from al he was just a positioned, really
bad position. He doesn't know what his feet And it's
like those details and those uh finite moments that it
really you know, it sets apart, like a real goalkeeper
versus one that wants to be a goalkeeper or like
never played in that position before. So I think that's

(04:39):
also unique that you get that that nobody can play
from the entire Columbus roster that they had tonight. And yeah,
they ended up playing with a field player. And we
we saw it and we were talking during halftime like Okay,
this is gonna play. Either it's gonna be Saunders can
score from anywhere like three yards of you know, lots

(04:59):
of goals we saw at least, you know, for Neil,
or it could be like a tighter, tighter game. It
wasn't three because Columbus I think once they lost Romero,
I think mentally they knew it like, okay, we're screwed,
like we don't have you know, like we don't have
we don't have a real cool you know, we don't
have a goalkeeper to really save us from tonight. And
I think that lacy in their head and we saw

(05:21):
it also second half, the first five minutes, Columbus wasn't
playing like they used to play with that confidence and
passing the ball. They were hesitant right every time they passed,
all because they knew in the back they had the
risky like, you know, he's not a goalkeeper and one
shot could be you know, easily a goal.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
And we saw that a number of times where he
just had poor positioning. And I mean, like honestly, Abraham
Romero owes Seanz Sawatski about steak as I tweeted Steak
Dinner every night for the rest of the year, because yeah,
he put them through something that I wouldn't put on
my worst enemy. Mixed up for maybe the Pearland Timbers
because that was rough rough scenes tonight for Columbus. I mean,

(05:59):
if you're if you're a you know, a light soccer fan,
who's you know, a football fan, baseball, whatever. The closest
thing we could maybe compare to this was actually happened
in the NFC Championship game a couple of years ago,
and it caused a big you know ruckus about you know,
teams having a third quarterback available because San Francisco was
We're down quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
Brock Purdy got injured and.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
They were down, I believe at some point down two
quarterbacks and they didn't have another you know, eligible starting
quarterback ready to go. And I think you can compare
it to a situation where an NFL team has two
quarterbacks and you know, one or maybe both of them
get injured and they're to a third guy and they
don't have a third quarterback available and they have to
throw somebody in there.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
But the difference, I think you make a great point.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
With soccer to football is that you have you know, obviously,
fifty two guys was it fifty three guys on an
NFL roster for game day right, And of those fifty
three guys, those are the best of the best of
the best from their given high schools.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
And many of those.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Fifty three have probably played quarterback at some point or another.
They can go under center, and maybe they don't understand
the full offense. But I mean, every team's got a
guy they can throw in as an emergency guy and
he knows how to do it. Soccer is a lot different,
and the goalkeeper position is so very different. And it's
not just like, oh, yeah, I played soccer maybe when

(07:21):
I was eight years old and a goalkeeper, and even
though I transitioned to being a defender, I can play.
That's not it doesn't work that way. It's it's a
unique position that you can't just throw a guy into
because he played it when he was eight or thirteen
years old. And we saw that tonight where Wilford Nancy,
who we talked about on the pregame show, maybe the
best head coach in MLS. Once Romero goes out, he

(07:43):
calls a couple of midfielders over. I believe Jackson and
Zawatski as well and as great as a coach as
he is, even he didn't know what to do in
this situation. He didn't have a backup goalkeeper ready to go.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
Yeah, we saw the broadcast he basically saying, Okay, who
wants to be a goalkeeper.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Other than two guys? Okay, what's to take it?

Speaker 4 (08:00):
And then I'll take it. But yeah, it's one of
those unique situations that it's it's so tough that even
you know, wilfriend Nancy to your point, like he had
that plan see right or plant?

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Not even they.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
But uh, And I think it's also the amazing thing
about this is it all starts from that unique play
and how it's all like a bad decision from Romero
because at the end of the day, we're talking about
it during halftime. If you're an experienced goalkeeper, you don't
do that type of you know, getting out. He knew that, yeah,
Morris probably would would win the ball, but there was

(08:37):
also like two defenders next to him, right, so you
as if your experience then you will hold off and wait.
But then Rori just went straight to you know, to
shove your Morrison with his forearm and end up being
a red. Right, there was no no way about it.
But but yeah, that that changes everything. And I think
also now talking about the result, well, let's.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Let's say it breaking.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Let's talk about the result because honestly, for nothing, Sounders
over Columbus. The fallout of this result. What this result
means we'll obviously get to a lot with this game
is the Sounders. It is a massive, massive results obviously
with the hat trick. Tonight's Toyota Man of the Match
is Albert Rusnak. Your local Toyota dealers are project to
present tonight's Man of the match on Delta airlines. Is

(09:21):
project doing it one soccer ball for every mile ran

presented by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Sounders FC.
We'll take a break and we'll talk about this result
because it is a big one for Seattle, not only
on the field, but in the table as well. We'll
update that next on Sports Radio nine to fifty KRM.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
The postmatch show.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
You're here and taking care of business because the Sounders
one tonight by a score of four nothing. It almost
feels a little bit dirty playing this song because it
just again it feels like our boardop of Mitchell BLI here,
I think accurately said our man of the match was
Albert Rusnak, but it could have very easily been Abraham Romero.
It just feels like it feels I made dirty. Isn't

(13:14):
the right word, but it's like, man, this was this
was taking candy from a baby. And I know that
term gets set a lot, but this was actually like
taking candy from a baby. It was just too easy tonight,
as the crew played if you're just joining us? The
crew played forty five minutes the last half of the
second half of this game without a true goalkeeper, and

(13:34):
Albert Rusnak scores a hat trick and speaking of that,
it's time for our Emerald Queen Casino play of the match,
and really the goal that changed everything and it made
this go for the Sounders in a four to nothing
win was the first goal, the free kick from Rusnak.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
Smashes Sound as School.

Speaker 12 (13:56):
A free kick from Albert Russnick finds the book corner.

Speaker 4 (14:01):
Zowosky goes into the.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
Goal and the first thing he does it is pull
the ball out of the back of the net.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
The sound is lead one nil.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
The play of the match is presented by Emerald Queen Casino,
the betting capital of the Northwest and Shanzovo. Osawatsky was
the midfielder that went into goal for the second half
for Columbus, and he did not have a good day
to say the least.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
But you know, Diego, speaking about that goal, I think
it leads to.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
A great discussion point over what this game could have
been because that was, you know, the last meaningful kick
of the first half, and if that ball doesn't go into.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
The back of the net, it's zero zero going into halftime.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
Will Ford Nancy, the outstanding coach he is, can regroup,
maybe use some interesting tactics to keep this game zero zero.
This second half could have looked very different had it
not been.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
For that goal. Yeah, No, definitely Sounders took the opportunity
in this case. Albert Rosinak right with that goal, I
think it would be yeah, just a different mentality in terms, Okay,
we're Neil, Neil. We have an ex you know, an
extra player for the Sounders, but we need to be
you know, careful, and we need to be smart and
smart about it. So probably we'll be looking at a

(15:13):
four nil, maybe like a to nil. Maybe I would say,
like definitely a Saunders win because you have an extra
player and Columbus or we're talking about it during halftime.
It's a team that they need to possess the ball
in order to operate and play, and with that with
a play with ten players, they cannot really do that

(15:34):
with a Sounders that they can pressure high and they
can win the ball. So I think we'll be looking
also probably a victory for the Sounders most likely, I
don't think like I mean, yeah, if they know true,
for any reason they're able to play with ten players
and get that you know tie, it would be miraculous.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
And I think.

Speaker 4 (15:53):
It was Danny Jackson was mentioning it was like a
game when.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Columbus twenty eighteen they went down a man in like
the thirteenth minute and Burhalter was able.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
To keep his So it would be like a different story. Yeah,
and probably in will free Nancy would say, ok, hey
you remember that time and blah blah blah. Maybe right,
but it didn't happen. I think at at the end
of the day, even though without even I was just
like thinking about, let's put like this as a scenario,
let's let's play it. Put like Romero still on the game. Still,
the Sounders to me, was the better team in the

(16:26):
first half point. If you think about like the first
twenty minutes, Yeah, Columbus Crew had the Yeah they were possessing,
but they didn't generate any like real like dangerous place
on not right, It was just like passing the ball
back and forth, and really Saunders didn't have opportunity opportunities.
But once Sounders started with I would say Jordan Morris
with that first chance that he missed one side of

(16:48):
the the goalpost, that's when Saunders started to find the
spaces and generating really dangerous plays. And they were actually
the dangers, the most dangerous team in those first four
or five minutes without that, you know, red card.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Play thirty third minute was that Jordan going wide thirty
seventh was.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
A great cross by Rothrock. Didn't look like anybody believed
in it, but it could have easily been in back
of the net. Thirty eighth minute was another Paul rothrock
curling shot that forced a great save. Sounders were the
better team they're in the first half, and and really
if it's a lot, I think it's a great point
that if this were eleven on eleven going into the
second half, Sounders equally had a great chance to win

(17:24):
this game. It was just very much helped by the
fact that a midfielder played in goal for the last
forty five minutes.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
So, and but listen, you know, really quickly as we
move on, the win puts the Sounders into fifth place
in the Western Conference forty three points. And you know,
coming out of back to back one nothing lost as diego.
You know, the games against LFC in Portland the last week,
that's that's now it failed feels like a year ago.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
This game really does. This result helps completely.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
Hit the reset button into the final six games of
the year, and it's such an important result for the
mentalities of all these guys.

Speaker 4 (17:58):
Yeah, one hundred percent, I think you nail it with
that reset term, because I think the Sounders struggled against Timbers,
you know that loss and also against LAFC and you're
talking about like, you know, top caliber teams Columbus Crew.
No matter you know, without like six players I didn't
have to tonight, there's still you know, a top notch club,

(18:20):
a club and I even said, like probably the best
club in the last twelve months. You think about like
the being Mmel's Cup Champions League Cup champions and being
in the final like CONKAC Cap Champions League, right, So
to me, this is a staple winning in a sense
that no matter what the circumstances, is still three points
and you're still like winning against the MBLCE Cup champion

(18:41):
for nil away. So to me, it's it's definitely this
type of changing the mindset. Okay, we're now back in
fifth place, and you can also even you know, if
you see the LA Galaxies with fifty two points in
first place, you have LAFC playing right now forty eight
points Salt Lake City, Colorado, but Seattle Sounders is one

(19:02):
point away from Colorado Rapids that are in fourth place
with forty four points. So you can also like look
at the why not like look at try to see
like those first four spots that Seattle Sounders usually are
in though those spots, but this season has been different,
but I think with this this win, you can you
can go for it because you're also playing against rivals
that you can you know you can win and beat

(19:22):
them at home and also away.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
Four nothing over Columbus. What is next for Seattle? How
can they follow this up? We'll talk about that coming
up next segment. But the Sounders have one today and

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Wrapping up the postmatch show here on nine to fifty
k AM Sounders with one of the most unique wins
you'll ever see for Nothing over the Columbus Crew. Was
not unique because of the score line. It was unique
because Columbus played the entire second half without a true goalkeeper.
A red card at the end of the first half
forced a midfielder to be in goal for the entire

(23:22):
second half for Columbus, and as you can probably predict,
it did not go very well. For Nothing Sounders win
a hat trick from Albert Rusnak. He's now the third
Sounder of all time to score a hat trick against Columbus.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
I believe that's now as an eight or nine all
time hat tricks for the Sounders.

Speaker 2 (23:41):
Now, I don't have that off the top of my head.
Kevin k Ryan Carns here one of them, for sure,
we'll have that. But at the end of the day,
it's a dominant Sounders win and a very very unusual one. Well,
the Sounders FC Ravegreen Run, presented by Providence Swedish, is back.

Speaker 3 (24:16):
Again, that is tomorrow, September eighth.

Speaker 2 (24:20):
With the win, obviously, as we mentioned, Sounders rising up
to fifth place in the Western Conference.

Speaker 3 (24:24):
With the loss.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
Meanwhile, it basically ends the supporter shield hopes of Columbus.
It basically locks in almost locks in Inner Miami mathematically
to win the Supporter Shield. So that's another fallout of
tonight's match as well. But in terms of what's next
for Seattle, it's gonna be three straight home matches. There's
only six matches left, four of them are at home.

(24:45):
The next three are all at home and it starts
off against the sporting Kansas City coming up next Sunday,
So a week from tomorrow, September fifteenth, it'll be a
four to twenty five kickoff. Our provident Swedish premat show
will begin at four o'clock right here. Sports nine fifty
am will also have it in Spanish language on l
Ray thirteen sixty and of course you can watch the

(25:06):
match via MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app
and diego. Obviously Kansas City team. After Kansas City, you
have San Jose team and then Houston I think a
decent team this year. These next three at home are
three big, big opportunities for Seattle to build on what
happened tonight in these four goals. And I mean the

(25:28):
dream is obviously nine points. It is, by the way,
the eighth patrick all time for Albert Rusnik, thank you, Ryan.
But this is a chance in these next three games,
starting with k C Diego for Seattle to really build.

Speaker 4 (25:40):
Up the points and look for a top four seed
in the West. Yeah, yeah, it needs to be nine points.
I mean Houston to your point, yeah, that could be
the hardest game out of the three because it's it's
it's a good team they're playing right now against the LAFC,
but also like a Houston Dynamo is not a great
team outside of their home field, right, So definitely I

(26:01):
think that's an advantage for Seattle Saunders. And I think
I think this important win against Columbus to me, changes
the picture of how you can see the playoffs for
Seattle Saunders, right, because it's it shows like, okay, we
you know, no matter what the circumstances, we just won

(26:21):
against the m LS Cup champions.

Speaker 3 (26:23):
And as you mentioned, we were the better team in
the first half.

Speaker 4 (26:25):
Too, exactly right. And also Columbus, Yeah, I didn't have Kucho,
but also Seattle Thunders, they didn't have Stephen Fry, didn't
have Joe Paolo, right, Roridiaz Right. So I think in
that sense you can you can say, okay, yes, Seattle Thunders,
they can actually beat top caliber MLS contender or the
actual champions. And I think, to me, is this the

(26:48):
next few six games are crucial to build up for
the playoffs, right, because now you're in a good position,
fifth position, or I think about playoffs, but now you
have to think about home field advantage because you have
those next three game as you were mentioning, that are
a winnable games. And I remember that.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
First round in the playoffs is a three game series.
You want two of those three at home.

Speaker 4 (27:05):
Yeah, exactly, So you have to think about that. And
I think Branch Matters already thinking, okay, now is the
time to start like you know, you know, talk about
numbers and math and see, okay, you need to take
advantage of any any game that you have left. And
now as you get like also players recovered and you know,
getting back from injuries and having a Pedro de la
Vega who even though today wasn't wasn't his best game,

(27:26):
but he's starting to get more in rhythm. He had
a few you know plays that were really really good
right and show his quality. So I do think we're
up for a good, you know, end of the season
for Seattle Sounders and thinking about you know, playoffs that
anything can happen.

Speaker 2 (27:42):
Six left in the regular season, next three at home.
