LAFC come to Seattle sitting in secondplace in the Western Conference, just
two points behind La Galaxy, butthey do have two games at hand against
their intercity rivals, firmly in thebattle for the Supporters Shield, and it's
going to be a big test foryour Seattle Sounders. We just talked about
last segment how the Sounders can balancegoing forward and protecting their back line against
some very potent offense. But thetwo guys that we have to keep an

eye on today, guys are DennyBuanga fourteen goals, eight assists and Mateush
Bogush. They're two kind of talismanup front. How the Sounder is going
to keep them off the scoreeshet today, I don't know. I think every
team that they've faced this year probablytalks about this in their pregame show.
Every coaches meeting leading up to LAFCgame. You're just praying that one of

those guys is not on the field. There's nothing you can do to really
neutralize these guys. I mean,you have to play fast, you have
to play physical, and I thinkas a defender you just always have to
know where they are all the time. Right, those are the two guys
that are the most dangerous, butalso that can low you to sleep a
little bit if you focus too muchon them. The ball gets spread out.
But as a stat show, theteam kind of goes where bow Wanga

goes and Bogush as well, Soyou know, if Christian does push up,
it becomes three in the back forthe Sounders. And we asked Schmtz,

it. We can't just focus onone or two guys. So at the

in the back of the net andthat's the game. So that's how good
these guys are, and the Soundersare gonna have to be aware they haven't

the match today? Yeah, Ithink it's just playing a good, solid
game. I'm trying to think ifwe've seen a full ninety minutes where the
Sounders just look to absolutely dominate,and I think that they've done it a
couple times against lesser opponents, teamsthat they should have beaten, and now
it's about testing yourself against the bestin the West, and the key tonight

is to put the ball on theback of the net when you get the
chance, because it gets an LAFCteam, you're not gonna get that many
opportunities, especially with your East innet, Like that's a world class goalkeeper
and so if you can prove yourselftonight at home, you kind of give
yourself a pat on the back withthis one. But I still want to
see good possession based soccer. It'stough to play against a three four three
because there are numbers and it's somethingthat the Sounders aren't used to seeing.

So I'm interested to see how theyadjust to a different formation. Yeah,
I think I mean, obviously scoringgoals right in order when you got to
do that, but I think itkind of has to be multiple goals tonight
from the Sounders because they always havethat opportunity. They're always going to get
a couple. There's always going tobe a momentum swing and they're creative up
top. So you got to puta fuel away. You got to put

the ball on the back of thenet when you get the opportunity. There
can't be those chances that you're youknow, you miss and then later on
you're thinking about no you gotta knockthose in. Let's take a look at
the history between these two teams.Obviously, they've met a couple of times
in the playoffs. Seattle has athree eight and four record against LAFC in
the MLS regular season. The Sounderseliminated LFC from the playoffs in twenty nineteen

and twenty twenty, but LAFC eliminatedSeattle last season, so they have kind
of had the last blood in termsof the postseason battles. Fellas, I'm
gonna pose this question to you,is this a rivalry? Obviously it's not
gonna get to the point of thePortland and possibly Vancouver, But I'd argue
this is one of the top otherteams that you mark on the calendar every
time that the schedule comes out.I mean, three and eight Wolf,

that's a tough record. I'm notsure the Sounders have a losing record quite
like that with any other team,even the LA Galaxy. Right right,
it's a new It's not really arivalry per se. I think it's just
two really good teams playing against eachother. And someone asked me that when
I went to Kansas City, whywould you go to a rival and it's
like Kansas City is not a rival, it's just a really good team that

we happen to both be very verygood. I think that's the case here.
I'm not sure it's a rivalry,but it's a case of two clubs,
two organizations that want to do everythingtop class, and the fans come
out for both, and when youwin, it becomes a little bit something
special. Like you said, you'regonna mark that one on your calendar because
you know it's going to be agood battle. You won't see LAFC with

a losing season. I can guaranteeyou that they're always going to be at
the top with the way that theyrun that organization. So just a good
opponent, but three and eight yougot to somehow write that ship. You
don't want to be playing catch upfor the next ten years against an LAFC
team and have them hold that aboveyou. It's not a good look either
for you to think it's a rivaland the other team not to if they've

been winning. I think it's thesame thing. I think the only rivals
for me are Vancouver and Portland.I mean, even when we were playing
La Galaxy, that was the onethat you marked on the calendar, but
that was because recently we had bothbeen in great runs of form when we
were going at each other. Thisis the same thing, right, two
top clubs for the last few yearsgoing at each other. When you do

happen to meet in the playoffs,because you've been at that top level for
so long, We've seen that inother sports as well, it turns into
a rivalry. So you're saying ithasn't at this point. No, it
turns into a heated battle. Yes, but it's not a rivalry as yet.
It'll be six, seven, eightyears. If we find ourselves in
the Western Conference finals for the nextyou know, six out of the next
eight years, I could see maybesomething forming there. But they'll always have

the galaxy that is bar none therival right, and they might have a
San Jose. But I think thatreally is akin to regional rivalries. But
yeah, I mean that's a greatpoint. I think it's just two successful
teams. And again, if wefind ourselves in multiple finals together in the
Western Conference, you could possibly seeit. You're gonna see the best and

worst out of both these teams inbig games. And you've seen it in
the past when we knocked them outand they knocked us out. They were
always very close games. No one'sblowing anyone away, so it's always going
to be a tight contest. Yeah, I think you need a few generations
before you call it arrival, right. There needs to be a few iterations
of the teams that are going atit, and there needs to be some
drama there. Yeah, it's definitelyfilling up here in Loomenfield as we count

and they've played it for years,a four to three to three attacking
brand of soccer. Tonight it's athree four three and that's going to be

their way. Sounders tried to makeadjustments in the second half, ended up

playing right into their hands. Theyjust hit us on the counter. With
one more goal from Wowonga, whowas once again the difference maker tonight with
two goals. Lamar break down whatyou saw from the second half. Sounders
with a little bit of sustained pressureto open the half, but nothing to
show for it. Yeah, itwas what you expected leading into the second
half. They're up, lafc's upto zero. They were able to sit

back even more and just play onthe counter and hopefully get some possession up
top. First fifteen minutes they didn'tget out of their half. I thought
the Sounders, you know, it'svery hard for a team to sit with
sustained pressure on them for forty fiveminutes and not give up a goal.
So in the first fifteen minutes,I thought, we got to get something.
There has to be some break.We got to get a lucky bounce

or something like that. It didn'thappen. They're able to, you know,
counter a little bit, get alittle bit of possession further up the
field. As time went on pastthat fifteen minutes and then they bring on
Kai, who you know is obviouslygoing to be able to hold the ball

not being able to score when ateam sits back and parks the bus.
That's been pretty difficult for the Soundersfor a while now. Having somebody
that you know, maybe on theoutside, goes at somebody one on one
or gets the ball and keeps goingat him. That's what I would like
to see, is because I'm awinger, right, I want to see
wingers go at people one on one, beat somebody and then make pull out

defenders, take shots from distance,that sort of thing. He talked about
the tactical changes that you wanted tosee in the second half or your evaluations
for how that looked. Well.I think he made some subs also and
that changed the game just a littlebit, added a little bit of life.
You know, Reid moves back toleft back. I think he was
a bit more impactful from a deeperposition, something that Schmetz will have to

think about, you know, asthis season kind of unfolds, and how
he wants to play. I mean, any time you play against a team
here and you're up to nothing.Like Lamar said, they're happy to absorb
pressure and if they can withstand thatfor fifteen to twenty minutes, then you

that's when you catch them on thebrink. I mean, everything worked out

there in the last five minutes,made some crazy saves, but wasn't really

a question, Yeah, what doyou think the solution is for when a
team parks the bus. What dothe Sounders need to do differently? I

think you go two up top,for sure. I think you go two
up, you go straight, threeto five two, and you get the
ball into wide areas and you justswing in balls. Because at every single
practice when we played offense versus defense, the last that's the worst practice of
the year is when all four ofus are sitting back there and we're just
getting peppered with crosses and the attackersare coming at us NonStop. And it's
the same in a game like ifif if LAFC is gonna sit back there

with five and the Sounders aren't gonnawip balls in, I'm happy. If
I'm LAFC. Everything's in front ofme. I don't have to turn around
and face my own goal. Butwe saw it against Saint Louis. We
scored the first goal from getting downat the end line. It's whipping a
ball in, and in the firsthalf there was a couple where the ball
came in and we won the knockdown. And sometimes it's not about the first
ball. It's about the second ball, it's about the third ball. It's
about the sustained pressure that happens whenyou do swing in the ball. And

tonight the service just wasn't good enough. Yeah, no, I agree.
I mean something has to change,right. You can't have one guy sitting
up top and then just have possessionto be passing it around the outside of

shots from distance, and that's thefirst thing where all did. Yeah,
as soon as he got in hetouched the ball, you knew he wanted

yes, have we made progress?Absolutely? Are we where we want

and there's a lot of work forthis Sounders team to secure a top

four spot. Because Schmid said,supporter shields out of the question, we
just want to focus on trying toget a home game that requires a top
four finish. I think if youcan find a solution to you know,
when a team parks the bus andyou can find goals in that, then
that's going to make other teams haveto change. Right If LAFC knows that
they can do that away at ourhome and still come out with a victory

like this, then they're all toohappy to do that. I think if
you find that, I don't thinkthis is like a dire thing that we

But then you get halfway through aseason and the teams that the Sounders
played were all desperate for wins.Right. We didn't play top teams throughout

win, the coach is getting fired. You can't just come into Seattle then

okay, we think we can geta point here, right, and

it's five, three and two orhowever they're gonna set up. No,
but yes, it is a consciousdecision for a team that's chasing, you
know, a supporter shield to comein here and say, we can afford

see what happens if we get outof there. We know, we know

that we can probably keep them offthe board, and then if we're gonna
score on the other end, wetrust our attackers. And so for them,
it was a tactical adjustment to comein here and say we're gonna try

Brian needs to make or is thatsomething where he needs to prepare his team
