Hot No, so like we have So we're at the
Stokwamba Casino Sportsbook Conference Championship Weekend. We're here today, fired
up to be here, excited to be here, and we
have gear that we have. It's in a little Pelican
case that we bring up to do remotes. Usually I
(02:06):
keep in my car, but you know, like games lately
and out in the ill, keep in the garage. I
walk out to the garage, put my backpack with my
computer in the car, close the garage door, get in
the car, go, put some gas in the car, drive
up to the casino, get here nice and early, get
some lunch. And there was a point when I'm driving
up today, go I put that thing and like, yeah,
ID to open the garage. Just why I opened the garage.
(02:27):
Just went through the groage today. Yeah, I put it
in the car, get up here, no case, no remoter,
I was here. I parked the panic and the there's like.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Oh lord, at what point did you realize were you inside?
Speaker 1 (02:42):
No? No, I went. I went to open up the
back you know hatch, and like it's not there, and
I and I second, I thought that maybe I forgot it.
But then i'mentah, no, it's in the car. I'm sure
whow else would I've gone through the garage. Well, I
just went through the garage, put my backpack in and left. Anyway,
just mon I got a great way. She's like came
and I said, hey, luckily I live without heavy traffic.
(03:06):
It's about twenty five twenty twenty five minutes from my house,
roughly maybe twenty five. Anyway, she met me part way
and just I yeah, and I said I'm sorry, and
she texts me back she says, no, you're perfect. I
said that, you'd never You've never said that before, so
I think you're being sarcastic. But anyway, here we are. Okay,
(03:29):
let's get into it because we got a lot going on.
Danie O'Neil's this is great day to have dany On.
Oh yeah, great day to have dani On covering Pete
Carroll for many years. So he'll join us for a
weekly visit. Our guy can't wait to have Stuart mandel
On wrap up the college football season at one o'clock today.
Got another open segment one with thirty. We'll get to
that in a second. We're gonna do some Pete Carroll
stuff there and then Rob rang at two o'clock. Busy,
(03:49):
busy show this weekend or this Friday. Okay, Pete Carroll's back.
I think it's awesome. I would I'd be hard pressed
to find someone that doesn't think it's a good thing.
But maybe there are Seahawks fans out there that just
kind of would have liked him to walk away. Here's
the thing with Pete. I'm gonna take all the other
stuff away for a second, in terms of age and
(04:11):
the fact that he doesn't act his agent all that.
Pete Carroll and we're going through this right now, and
it's a very personal thing with everybody at our radio station.
With Mike Homngrin the Hall of Fame and Mike's gonna
I think we're all in about a ninety percent agreement
and feeling and talking to guy. Mike's gonna get in
this year. We're pretty sure Mike's getting in. Yes, it's
(04:36):
it's he's the coaching guy. He's gonna get in. It's
taken a long time to get there. Pete Carroll is
a borderline Hall of Famer, one hundred and seventy wins
all time, ranked seventeenth all time in the National Football League.
He won a Super Bowl, won two conference championships, went
(04:59):
to another Super Bowl. You start looking at resumes this
we talked about. I talked about this the other day
with with Greg It's he's got a better Pete Carroll
right now. Homegren for sure does I don't even have
to get into the holmegrun situation. But Holmegren actually has
fewer wins than Pete Carroll. But and they have the
(05:23):
same number of Super Bowl wins, and they both lost
the Super Bowl as well. But in the case of
Pete Carroll, he's got a better resume than in terms
of a Super Bowl and wins better than Bud Grant
who's in, better than Bill Cower, who's in, better than
Marv Levy who's in. He's got a better resume than
(05:43):
all those guys. But for some reason, it's become really
hard for coaches to get in. Pete should be a
Hall of Famer. In my mind, he is a Hall
of Famer. He really much like what Mike did took up.
I mean, the last two years before Pete got there,
the Seahawks were awful. He got there, they had to
(06:03):
basically resurrect a roster three hundred and fifty roster moves
in the first twelve. He is a Hall of Famer.
But because of the world we live in and for
whatever reason, it's becoming harder for these guys to get in.
His coaches.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
I want.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
I'm excited for him to come back in because I
think if he has any amount of success whatsoever, get
a cup. You know, he's not that far away from
being a top ten coach all time in terms of wins.
That's very, very reachable. He's twenty away from that. Now.
Just because you get there doesn't mean you're in. Chuck
Knox is number eleven all the time, and he's not in,
(06:39):
and there's no path it feels like for him to
get there. But I want to see I selfishly want
to see Pete get into the Hall of Fame. And
I'm so bullish on the guy. I've said before, after
talking to enough people, Yeah, I can understand why they
made the move to move on from Pete. I understand
why the decision was made. I support this decision they
(07:01):
made as someone who covered the team and now as
someone who's more of just a fan and an observer
from AFAR. I support what they did. I agree with
what they did. But I'm a huge Pete Carroll fan.
Professionally dealing with him, but just watching him coach the
team I grew up watching. He resurrected this team. He
put it on a plane that's never been before. He
(07:21):
raised the standard of excellence to a level that Mike
had it there and then it got torpedo thanks Tim Ruskell.
But Mike kind of had it on that path and
that trajectory. Pete took it to a different level because
he did it over a decade and a half. He's
going to go to Vegas and he's going to go put.
He's got to deal with a crazy man as an owner, thissfunctional, organization, dysfunctional,
(07:43):
a lot of things. But that market, the facility, all
the things they have going. I think he's going to
have success there. But look at the division. Is there
a division with a better quartet of coaches? There isn't now, right,
there isn't one. Andy Read, Pete Carroll, Sean Payton, Jim
(08:05):
Harbaugh legends, Holy MOI man, like that is unreal what
he's dealing with in that division?
Speaker 6 (08:12):
Did that just become the I mean it's already extremely
competitive outside of the Raiders, but that that just become
the best conference.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
It's the best division in terms of coaches division without
even a hesitation. There's one surefire Hall of Famer and
Andy Reid. There's two other guys and Sean Payton and
Pete Carroll that will probably get in Jim Harbaugh has
going a long ways to go, but I mean widely,
I mean just Jim Harbaugh ghost places he wins.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
It's a little bit younger, too younger.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Yeah, but I'm excited, but I wanted to. I think
it makes the Raiders more fun to watch. You know,
They're always fun to watch, mostly because of dysfunctioned. But
Antonio Pierce was just a dipstick man. He's an absolute dipstick.
Came from just a cheating loser is what he was,
(08:59):
which I guess fit in some ways with the Raiders.
But he was just I mean, he's a cheater, he's
a he had no ethics, no morals with what those
guys were doing. Him in herm Edwards at at at
Arizona State, a loser like it. Couldn't root for those guys.
You couldn't even just have discussed every time some of
the silent was disgusted by him. Now you have put
(09:20):
Pete Carroll there. It's awesome, absolutely awesome.
Speaker 6 (09:23):
You know what I did when the news came out
about four hours ago this morning, I posted how did
the Seahawks fans feel about Pete? And I wrote black
and silver. I know it's silver and black. Okay, it's
the same two colors that the order. I messed up
the order. I said black and side.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
You're dyslexic.
Speaker 6 (09:37):
Yeah, you know sometimes over eighty five responses so far,
overwhelming majority, extremely excited. And also the fact that he's
in the AFC, he's on our coast, he's AFC West.
They now a lot of people saying that they will
root now they have an AFC team.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
To rout well and twenty twenty six is I think
that next time they'll play, I believe. So where that is.
I gotta hope it's here. If not, they'll probably be
a preseason game with him here before then, let's do this.
Danie O'Neil's going to join us. Great to have his
perspective today. I want to get your thoughts four nine,
four to five one. But you know what, honestly, I
want to get talkbacks today. Just get some talkbacks. Just

a red red microphone and then brand new iHeart app.
Go to the nine three three kjar dot com. Your
thoughts on Pete Carroll coming back? Are you rooting for
the Raiders? You're rooting for Pete. Are you disappointed? Would
you liked him just to end his career at the
age of seventy three in Seattle? Your thoughts on the
Pete Carroll hiring by the Raiders. I think it's awesome,
(10:34):
ton of fun to talk about. We want to hear
you Seahawk fans today, not just Christian Beeren. I love you, Chris.
I want to hear from all of you guys. I
want to hear from everybody today. Go to the red
microphone fire away four nine four five one. We might
get to some text as well. Want to hear your voice.
We'll play those coming up at one thirty and two
thirty day. Danny O'Neill's next.

thirty in the afternoon, Pete Carroll is back in the
National Football League. We want your thoughts on it. Daniel
(12:02):
O'Neil's as well. Hi Danny, how are you?
Speaker 5 (12:04):
I'm good? Are you doing Ian?
Speaker 1 (12:06):
I'm very good. I love you your column on college
football and Ohio State the deserving champion. We'll get to
that in a second. I do want to I thought
I will talk about that today. We got each hero
on the agenda. Buddy. We got too much going on today.
We have too much going on today. Because now Pete
Carroll's back in the National Football leaguelet's go.
Speaker 7 (12:25):
I was surprised, not that he clearly wanted to be
back in, but I thought if he was gonna get
back in that Chicago was probably the better fit.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Simply because I thought that a team was gonna look
and hey, we've got all of the parts. We think
we've got the talent.
Speaker 7 (12:41):
We just need somebody to get the culture right, get
everybody rode in the same direction.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
And that seemed to be Chicago as.
Speaker 7 (12:47):
Opposed to Las Vegas, which strikes me more as it's
not a teardown, but it's definitely a rebuild. And they
hired and I'm excited for it, and I'm really interested
to see exactly how this.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
Is going to go.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
I want to get to Hall of Fame resume and
different things like that, legacy, all those things that you
know when guys do come back in that kind of
come into play, it can go one to two ways
and all those things from a football standpoint. Danny, we
talked about it, I think last week or two weeks ago,
and we talked about the Jeremy Bates debacle when Pete
got he first came to Seattle. But one of the
(13:23):
things that made Pete great, especially the first you know,
after you got those first those two seven to nine seasons,
Yes they had the playoffs the one year out of
the way, he had an incredible staff, like absolutely incredible staff,
and that we just saw all flourish. We see one
of those guys this weekend going in the NFC Championship
(13:44):
game in DQ, and hell, you look at Q staff
and about two thirds of it are guys that come
from the Pete Carroll tree as well. Do you think
that that's going to be a challenge though, for Pete
to go back and rebuild a staff and so many
guys are already out there working.
Speaker 7 (14:00):
It's going to be a challenge in large part because
when he came to Seattle, he had a staff. He
had a staff that he had built over a number
of years, but more than that, a group that he
had really gotten primed.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
To go with him to the NFL.
Speaker 7 (14:15):
They really love their Special Teams coordinator Brian Schneider.
Speaker 5 (14:18):
They had hired Jeremy Bates with the idea that he
would be the guy to run the offense with me.
He had a staff and now he's not starting from track.
Speaker 8 (14:27):
He's got a lot of.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
History and a lot of connections. And I'll be interested
to see to somebody like Gus Bradley who's not going
back to the Colts. Does he end up going there?
Speaker 7 (14:35):
But yes, it is going to be a change for
him to build a staff, and I really don't know
what he's going to do on offense.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
I think that that's a huge question.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Yeah, I didn't think about you. Gu's right, Gus is out,
isn't he? So Gus is available that Gus to me
would be a higher number one, probably right, Like I mean,
that might be your first guy. But offensive coordinator is
gonna be interesting one because basically fired everybody. Do you
reunite with Darryl Bebble?
Speaker 5 (15:01):
I don't. I don't think so. So here's the interesting
over the past couple of years.
Speaker 7 (15:05):
I just finished the book called The Why Is Everything,
which is Mike Silver wrote it.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
It's about the Kyle.
Speaker 7 (15:09):
Shanahan, Mike Shanahan tree and then kind of the friend
of me relationship between McVay and Shanahan.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
It's really good because you get all of this direct
quotes from those guys.
Speaker 7 (15:19):
In many ways, Kyle Shanahan's offense kind of undid. The
Seattle three is what people refer to it now, the
cover three defense this Seattle was running.
Speaker 9 (15:30):
Now.
Speaker 7 (15:30):
Earl Thomas's sort of supernatural range had something to do
with why that defense worked so well. But I did
wonder do you go straight to somebody like that? Bobby
Slowick was let go by the Houston Texas today he's
from that that.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
Kyle Shanahan mode. Do you go with the thing that kind.
Speaker 7 (15:48):
Of beats you?
Speaker 5 (15:49):
Or do you go in a different direction. I really
don't know what he's gonna do.
Speaker 10 (15:52):
I would be surprised if he.
Speaker 7 (15:54):
Ends up reuniting with someone he worked with before, though,
on the offensive side.
Speaker 5 (15:58):
Of the ball.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Danie O'Neil brought to you by Northwest Handling Systems from
Forklift to Palette, Rax conveyors, the loading dock equipment, they sell,
rent and they service all your warehousing needs. Request a
quote today at WHS dot com or give him a
call for two five two five five zero five hundred. Yeah,
I I there's there. It's so much, there's so much
intrigue here. You wrote about it, I'll let you expand
(16:21):
on it. How does the Tom Brady element factor in here?
Speaker 7 (16:26):
So, I I don't know how involved Brady was in
the higher He owns ten percent the GM they.
Speaker 5 (16:33):
Hired spy tech.
Speaker 7 (16:34):
I believe as a college teammate of his, So I
don't know exactly how much this weighs in. But listening
to Brady Bring has been kind of a grumpy old
man as of an uncer. This year is kind of
where there was poking at Baker Mayfield about him being
demanding and uncomfortable not being winning championships like he kind
of he kind of sounded like the guy who more
(16:58):
like Belichick than Carold.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
But I also know that.
Speaker 9 (17:01):
A part of why Tom left to England was that
he didn't like the constant negativity that Bill Belichick radated
and look motivationally, Pete and Belichick are at opposite ends
of the spectrum.
Speaker 7 (17:15):
I think that the idea that they're totally different coaches.
They both know a ton of football and are rooted
in the defensive.
Speaker 10 (17:22):
Side of the ball.
Speaker 5 (17:23):
But as a fundamental.
Speaker 7 (17:24):
Premise, Pete doesn't believe in using fear to motivate. He
doesn't believe in threatening guys jobs. He doesn't believe in
going out there and your ass is going to be
on the next train out of town if you don't
start making that block.
Speaker 5 (17:36):
And Belichick is very much that way.
Speaker 7 (17:38):
Belichick very much is sort of that if you can't
do it, I'm going to get somebody who can.
Speaker 5 (17:43):
So there's part of me that thinks if Tom.
Speaker 7 (17:47):
Brady leaves Belichick and wins a Super Bowl as a
player and then hires the coach that is motivationally the
exact opposite of Bill Belichick and wins a Super Bowl
as an owner.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
But that would be the ultimate, the ultimate breakup.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Oh my gosh. I mean, meanwhile, Belichick goes five and
seven at North Carolina and a watered down ACC doesn't
get any better than that. They get boat raced by
Stanford right next year. You know, cow goes in there
and kicks their ass, and it just that'd be fantastic. Yeah,
I'm actually I can't root for those two teams, but yeah,
(18:24):
you get you get my point.
Speaker 5 (18:26):
I do.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
I do think there's something to that. I do think
there's something to that and the culture that he you know,
there's gonna be people across the country that didn't cover
him and weren't around him, or weren't fans of him,
like Seattle Seahawks fans or Seattle media and so forth.
They're gonna say, but my gosh, he's seventy three. He'll
be seventy four years old. I'll tell you this. I
(18:48):
never it was an oddity. I don't know how you were.
Never once I look at him and say, Man, that
guy's in his seventies. I never said that. I never
thought that like age for him truly is just a number.
Speaker 5 (19:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (19:01):
I don't see him slowing down or changing his approach.
And if there's if there's a potential criticism or flaw
in Pete's approach, I think you can make a point
that it's possible that some of the schematic developments in
the offense as we were talking about, that they they
(19:23):
they created edges that he wasn't able to schematically or
wasn't willing to schematically.
Speaker 5 (19:28):
Adjust it to. I think Pete believes that.
Speaker 7 (19:31):
When you get down to it, your system is your system.
Everyone has pluses and minuses.
Speaker 5 (19:36):
You do your best to accentuate the advantages to mitigate
the minuses. But the real difference is coaching.
Speaker 7 (19:41):
Guys and getting them involved and invested, and that part
of the job, that part of the job Pete.
Speaker 5 (19:47):
Has never waited. Now, maybe maybe he is.
Speaker 7 (19:52):
Using an outdated weapon when comes to his defense. Maybe
the game has it doesn't have the same edge that
adds back when Seattle held opponents to create the lowest
point total in the league in four successive years.
Speaker 5 (20:05):
But maybe if he gets the right group of guys
and they all.
Speaker 10 (20:08):
Buy in and they have that same.
Speaker 7 (20:10):
You don't have any old we've been through this before,
Kumbaya meeting kind of eye rolls, and it's a bunch
of young, aggressive guys. I do believe he can get
people to buy in.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
I certainly don't doubt the.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
Possibility that he'll be able to build the Raider into
something well.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
And here's the thing. They're not void of talent. They've
got a great edge rusher, they've got Crosby, I mean,
they've got they've got they've got some guys. But you know,
when he came here, what was it, three hundred and
fifty moves they made in the first fourteen months, you know,
him and Schneider, and then they hit the they hit
(20:49):
the jackpot. I mean, they drafted Cam and Earl and
Sherm and Bobby and you know they got a third
round quarterback. They ended up being, you know, a borderline
Hall of Famer, So you know they they're there is
personnel that you need to get. But I think is
his ability to still relate, to motivate, get guys to
play for him. Maybe it wore out here and maybe
it was time to move on here, and I think
(21:10):
in a lot of ways it probably was. But I
think all those things are going to work. The next
question is, and everyone's got an opinion on this, where
does the little quarterback end up? Do you think he
ends up going there.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
If he wants to.
Speaker 7 (21:25):
But everything we saw from Pete in Seattle, because when
he came to the Seahawks, everybody thought it's going to
be USC North, He's going to take all the He
didn't draft Taylor Manx, who shout out to Taylor being
on the UDUB staff.
Speaker 5 (21:38):
YEP, they took Earl Thomas instead. He didn't trade for
Carson Palm.
Speaker 7 (21:43):
It wasn't It wasn't that parade of guys from USC
he brought in Lindon.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
He cut them. He cut Lindell after like a day.
Speaker 5 (21:50):
Right, It was five weeks. Five weeks.
Speaker 7 (21:55):
I spent more time than I should trying to figure
out exactly why they cut him, and I heard two
different versions. The one I like best is that there
was a day he was out there wearing flat bottom shoes.
Speaker 5 (22:06):
He was wearing Jordan's instead of cleat.
Speaker 7 (22:08):
He couldn't practice or was limited in practice, but he
was out there in Jordan's and he didn't like that.
The other one, which is probably the truth because it's
not as good a story, was that he fumbled like
three times in practice and he was limited and they're just.
Speaker 5 (22:21):
Like, we're not doing this, We're not going.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
To go through.
Speaker 11 (22:24):
But yet he urped him after five weeks.
Speaker 5 (22:27):
So what he've seen from.
Speaker 7 (22:30):
Pete is that he absolutely will give a guy he
said they're a shot to win a place on the team.
He'll bring back Brandon Browner, he'll bring back Mark Shawn,
He'll have but he doesn't give anybody spot.
Speaker 5 (22:43):
So if Russ wants.
Speaker 7 (22:44):
To come and compete to see the quarterback, there will
certainly be an opportunity for him to do it. But
if he thinks he's gonna or wants to come as
a franchise guy, he will not get the same sort
of entrenched status with the Raiders that Mike Tomlin gave
him with the Steelers.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
I'm fairly certain of that.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
Well. I think the other thing too, is that, you know,
the reality inside the Virginia Mason Athletic Center was Russell
and his world around him. Russell and his entourage the
last couple of years were an absolute nightmare. And you know,
for Pete, for John, for the guy that's running the
parking lot, the security guys, the cooks, the nutritionists, the
(23:27):
equipment people. It didn't matter the pr staff. They made
life a living hell for so many people in that building.
And whereas a lot of it was kind of the periphery,
Russ people not so much. But Russ that's still him.
And you know, I know, like he did try to
get Pete and John fired. Someone will say, well, it's
just trying to He's just kind of force his way
(23:48):
out of town. That's fine. I would argue that in
the case of Pete's the most forgiving probably guy in
the world. Like you just kind of articulated that, right,
Like Pete, if anybody's gonna say forgiveness is okay, it
might be Pete. But I I just I don't know. Man,
it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up there, but
I think you're right. If he does, it's gonna be
(24:09):
spelled out pretty quick. The rules are a lot different
than they were in Seattle when you had an entourage
traveling with you. Bus is waiting for you on the
road before because you had to, you know, go do
photo ops with the group afterwards, while everyone else is
waiting for to go gets the charter. I mean, I
just think things will be a lot different, and I'm
not Maybe Russ can handle that now, but I I
don't know. I think you're better off moving on.
Speaker 7 (24:30):
I would tend to agree with you and that there's
gonna be if anybody thinks that, it's going to be
presented as Wow, Pete screwed up a couple of years
ago when they traded Russell Wilson, and we've kind of
found a middle ground here that absolutely.
Speaker 10 (24:45):
Is not going to be the pass to We're reunion.
Speaker 7 (24:48):
They decided they were moving on from Russ, and Russ
is better than any quarterback they have now, and maybe
he could work as an upgrade this season as they
look for a long term quarterback. But this is not
going to to be Hey, two sides realize what they
missed not having each other, and they're going to get
the band back together.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
Danie O'Neil joining us, dang apostrophe. He'll tell you about
that when we're all done here. Danny Echro goes in
the Hall of Fame. It's not unanimous, but he's in.
You've got a chance to watch him play for many
years here in Seattle. Thoughts on the legacy of Ichiro
Suzuki E.
Speaker 7 (25:24):
Tiro was one of the most fun players I've ever
been able to watch in cheerflow.
Speaker 5 (25:30):
Never covered the Mariners on a day to day basis, but.
Speaker 7 (25:33):
I did some relief duty while I was at the
Seattle Times down there.
Speaker 5 (25:37):
I've been around him, I've cheered for him a ton.
I always I loved the approach he had. And that's
not to say that there weren't flaws in his game.
Speaker 7 (25:47):
He didn't walk a ton in an era where on
base percentage we're more aware of that now.
Speaker 11 (25:53):
That probably would have helped.
Speaker 5 (25:55):
But God, he was such a unique player, and he
was so good for so long. And the one thing
that has always driven me not is.
Speaker 7 (26:03):
The core of people and it's not Majeordy certainly, and
I don't.
Speaker 5 (26:07):
Even know how big it is, but there is a
group of people who always railed or complained about eachro
how he didn't dive for ball.
Speaker 7 (26:16):
How I know that there was a manager that wished
he would steal more, felt like he didn't feel when he.
Speaker 5 (26:21):
Was told to, and kind of headstrong.
Speaker 7 (26:24):
And what I always remember is that was such a
unique thing when he came to town.
Speaker 5 (26:29):
Nobody knew if Japanese position players could succeed. There was
a sense that, hey, they're taking a shot on him,
and he comes here and he is different than anything
we've ever seen. He was different than anything baseball scene
in the last forty years. And it was so fun
because it was new and.
Speaker 7 (26:44):
You had this guy who was a flap hitter and
he's always getting on base. And some of his teammates
absolutely love watching the way that Riffy.
Speaker 5 (26:52):
Came back to around him. I just feel really fortunate
to have been able to watch it.
Speaker 7 (26:57):
I think it's really really cool that he's going into
the Hall of Fame, and it just that was two
thousand and one was one of the most enjoyable years
of being a sports stand in Seattle.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
I think my only thing, my only negative is And
we had John o'larud on the show on Tuesday, yes
or Wednesday whenever, Wednesday, I guess it was yeah, Wednesday
after he got announced, and we had Jon olrud On,
who doesn't do a lot of media, and you know,
he's telling stories about each hero. And I was thinking,
and I actually had Alex Marria does a great job
with baseball information. I think it's happened one other time
(27:27):
where you had three current or former batting champions all
on the same They had Edgar, each Heiro and Oli
rud all on the same roster. No one. The only
regret is the only regret is how do you not win?
Like really like like that's I mean. But think about
three guys that, in all and unique ways, were all
(27:48):
thought at one point to be the best hitter in baseball.
Ola Root flirted with four hundred for a few years
in Toronto and New York. Obviously, Edgar's in the Hall
of Fame, and each Uro was just he's the all
time hits leader, Like it's just a parkeable. All three
guys were on the same roster.
Speaker 5 (28:03):
It was unbelievable.
Speaker 7 (28:04):
And going back, I covered that ALCS that year in
New York, and I think what's hard to remember is
that nine to eleven when that happened, it changed, obviously
the complexion of everything in the country and it just
it it felt different after that. And that's not to
(28:25):
say it's I mean it was. It was a national tragedy,
and I think that it still casts a very big
shadow over the way we feel about our country and
certainly the way New Yorkers feel.
Speaker 10 (28:36):
But that when you.
Speaker 7 (28:37):
Look back, when you look back at that one hundred
and sixteen wins and just how they rolled.
Speaker 5 (28:43):
God, they lost Alex Rodriguez before that.
Speaker 7 (28:46):
Like before that season, Alex Rodriguez leagues, you talk about
a middle finger to somebody's.
Speaker 5 (28:52):
Like see, but they went one hundred game.
Speaker 7 (28:56):
It was it's unlike anything. I haven't ever experienced a
season like that, in large part because nobody really knew
what was going to be like that.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
I remember the story about lou Panella in spring training.
Speaker 7 (29:09):
Being finally like, this guy got to show me something.
He's got to do something. And then because he was
just kept grounding out to short which is basically how
he worked on his timing, and then he went out
one day and just knocked the ball over.
Speaker 5 (29:19):
The yard and lose like okay, fine.
Speaker 7 (29:21):
Like yeah, I see that you're capable of doing this
and this is all just like warm up games to you.
Speaker 10 (29:28):
But god, that was such a fun.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
Year, Danny. We you'll love this. We had Stony on
Larry stone on, and then we on uh Wednesday, and
and then we had Old Root on as well, and
they both told that exact same story, one from a
print journalist standpoint and the other guy from the player's standpoint,
and it's the best story ever. Like Lou losing his mind,
(29:50):
like what is this guy doing? He's just he's just
hitting weak ground balls to third and to short to
the left side, and he's yelling at him, can't you
pull the ball? And then when he when he finally
ode in the burhm over right field, just an absolute rock.
He goes you like that that was it? Like stones
on that guy? Huh like whatever, whatever, Lou, go have
(30:14):
a smoking relax enough for you. Yeah, go have a
smoke and relax. Loo, I got you. Don't worry. Check
back with you when I win the MVP and the
Rookie of the Year and we went one sixteen, I'll
check back with you.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Then Guy, something else, something else?
Speaker 1 (30:28):
Man, all right, I tell people the Dang Apostrophe, sir, well, I.
Speaker 7 (30:33):
Write a newsletter and the return of Pete Carroll means
that it's leaning back into one of my greatest strengths.
Because the Dang Apostrophe, which is my weekly newsletter, has
the patented Pete parser.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
There is no one who yes quite as well as
I do, so the Pete parser is gonna be love it.
I've dusted off the cobwebs.
Speaker 7 (30:52):
I've made a few critical adjustments, but you'll be getting
the Pete.
Speaker 5 (30:56):
Parsing returning in full force. You just go to.
Speaker 7 (30:58):
Danny O'Neill dot com, enter your email and you get
notes from me.
Speaker 12 (31:02):
That's one of my favorite things that you do, Danny.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
I can't wait. I can't wait, my friend, Thank you.
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
Sounds great. Take care both of you.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
There you go, Danny O'Neil joining us. We want to
hear from you as well. Go to the iHeartRadio app
fire Away. Just wants to find some can't find some here?
Speaker 12 (31:18):
Always what I love to do.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
Yes, do we have any yet?
Speaker 6 (31:21):
We have a bunch that came in after our segment yesterday,
So I don't think they're applicable to.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
Okay, we want to hear about your thoughts, Pete, Pete Carroll,
going back to the NFL. You rooting for him, your thoughts,
get us a thought on that. Go to the iHeartRadio
app and a little red microphone. More to come at
the sportsbooks. So calm me. Casino an hotel next.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
Now back to the inferness on your home for the
NFL playoffs and Super Bowl fifty nine. Sports Radio ninety
three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
Down back in the casino and hotel sports book gone
a Friday afternoon, you can tell that the football playoffs
are here. It's a buzzing because it's buzzing. And last
week it was really like right about now, like we
got a bunch of people in here having a having
a beverage, getting their stuff going on. I see, do
(32:15):
you guys four guys in front of me with these
guys right here all on their app. Yes, that's how
you do it.
Speaker 5 (32:20):
Man.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
You want to go to the window. I get that,
but you are there. You go, uh and we'll get
something in for you, buddy, don't ye.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
What are you gonna do talking about sports betting.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
What are you gonna do? What are you gonna do?
Speaker 4 (32:34):
What's your I got ten bucks on the money line
Chiefs win and the money line Commanders win.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Well, just a little two leg parlay. Yeah, okay, all right,
all right?
Speaker 2 (32:44):
What do we think about that?
Speaker 1 (32:47):
Uh? I like it because I'll probably do something very similar.
May want to get may want to do some better
odds and go with the spread, but we'll see. I
haven't decided yet, but I do. That's what I'm rooting for.
And I'm really bad at this old sportsbook thing because
I usually put stuff down on what I'm rooting for. Yeah,
sometimes I'll hedge. Yeah, actually not sometimes, and I'll end
(33:10):
up hedging type of guy drive by here on the
way home after the hockey game tomorrow and I'll do
something dumb and well that's what I'll end up doing
along the way. And I didn't get you in your
ingestous thoughts I pontificated in the first segment thoughts on
and'll start with you thoughts on Pete Carroll coming back.
Speaker 4 (33:28):
Yeah, it's uh, it's I didn't think he would, to
be honest, And I like what Danny said. I think
the Bears is probably a better fit, but I honestly,
I think the Raiders kind of need someone exactly like
him to be honest and to kind of change the
culture there a little bit. I think he'll lean away from,
you know, guys he's had in the past, whether it's
staff or roster spots. I think he's gonna go lean
(33:50):
into kind of something new. I think he's going to
prove that he at his older age, can adapt with
the rest of the league, and he's going to have
another phase to his game. I just as someone who
really roots for Pete Garrell, I hope he doesn't, you know,
kind of tarnish his legacy by going there and maybe
not having as much success as he did in Seattle,
(34:12):
because that could really hurt his case for the Hall
of Fame.
Speaker 6 (34:16):
Jess, that's an interesting I didn't even think about the
Hall of Fame until Ian mentioned it off the top
of the show. I'm obviously personally happy for him. I,
you know, having lived under the roof of a coach
my entire life. My dad retired four years ago, five
years ago, he's still coaching. He never retired, and it
just doesn't leave you if you were a coach at heart,
(34:37):
and so I'm very very happy for him that he's
still coaching and in the league, in the NFL, I
do think that we're going to see something similar now.
I was listening to Greg Bell talk to Vic Teffer,
who is the beat writer for the Raiders for the
Athletic this morning, and he won't have the same autonomy
that he did when he was here, so it'll be
(34:58):
an interesting to navigate. But because Paul Allen handed him
the keys of the car and just let him drive,
we didn't really get to see if that's exactly what
he was demanding, what he wanted, So it'll be interesting
to see how he collaborates with those there. But also
when it comes to the coaching staff, I could see
him going to one or two who he has worked
(35:19):
with before. It is interesting though, because right now anyone
who's out there, you know, on the curve, has been fired,
so you know, could they start over with him there.
He's got his tree, but his tree is so successful that,
like we mentioned, they are in the league right now.
I think he will be successful because I just read
an article on Dan Quinn this morning that was in Newsday,
(35:42):
and I was talking about how he comes in and
has this presence, but it just reminded me of Pete
Carroll so much like he came out of that coaching tree.
He's a lot like him, and that is what made
the Commanders of success so quickly. I think that he's
going to command a room. He's going to have this
presence that people will just jump on board with, and
(36:04):
that is a huge piece of the puzzle when it
comes to a successful franchises. Like Danny said, wrote everyone
rowing in the same direction. I think Pete has that
charisma to make that happen.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
Yeah, the autonomy, we'll touch it on later. I think
the autonomy part is interesting because when they were they Pete, John,
the crew here, the personnel guys here together. I wish
I had better insight, and I don't think any of
us that covered the team did it really new, but
I did always kind of feel as if, yeah, Pete
(36:35):
had the final say, but really it was John and
his crew making the personnel decisions. It just kind of so.
I don't know how different it'll be, but but the
fact that he is just the coach, it takes something
off his plate at least.
Speaker 12 (36:51):
Yes, and this is a time where he needs his
plate A little.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
Bit clear act. Yeah, give him the meat. I just
think it's the NFL's better with Pete Carroll in that period.
It is. It's just better, leaks better with Pete Carroll
in it. And not to say he didn't need to
go last year. I'll still support that decision. And I
think if you're a Seahawk fan, you gotta like what
you've seen so far in the early stages of the
Mike McDonald era. But yeah, it's it's good. And the
fact that in the AFC makes it easier to root
(37:16):
for him. If you're a Seahawk fan, you want to
root for him. So doc, are you rooting for him?
And what are your thoughts. Let's get some talkbacks going
as well. Go to the iHeartRadio app red microphone on
a Friday afternoon fire away, let's hear from you. Also,
we'll check the text line later four nine, four to
five one Stuart Mandel all things college football to wrap
up the season. Coming up next now from the Star
(37:37):

upon US Commander's Eagles noon on Sunday. Bills Chiefs follows
(38:22):

games right here? Ninety three point three KJRFM on your

basketball host mccronin, he had to fly all the way
to Seattle. God, Mick, are you okay? Mick flew all
the way to Seattle on a charter with his UCLA team.
(38:44):
It probably took him two hours and forty five minutes
before he touched down.
Speaker 12 (38:48):
The horror, the horror.
Speaker 13 (38:51):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
They played at night eight o'clock, seven thirty pre game.
That's as long as they did make it on their flight.
Hopefully they're okay. It's a long trip. Oh wait, they
would have made that if they would have kept the
pack twelve attacks right, Oh yeah.
Speaker 12 (39:04):
This is not an anomaly for him.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
Don't forget every hour we give you a word at word.

they knocked off. Did Seattle sixty two a couple of
weeks ago. It was so bad for Pittsburgh they put
(39:30):
their starting goalie Tristan Jarry on waivers the next day
after Seattle dropped a sixth spot on him. Hopefully they
can do that again tomorrow. Let's get to Stuart Mandel.
Speaker 3 (39:41):
It's time to go inside college football with Ian's weekly
visit with the athletics Stewart Mandel, Brought to you by
Ben Holliday Bourbon. This football season, team up with a
glass of Ben Holliday bourbon. This real Missouri bourbon bottled
in bond represents the perfect union of distilling tradition and
modern day production. On the rocks are in a cocktail.

Pick up a bundle today must be twenty one. Please
enjoy responsibly now. Stuart Mandel on your home for college
football Saturdays, Sports Radio ninety three point three k j
R FM.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
Stuart Mandel joined us. I can't promise you we won't
call you in the offseason, but this is our last
regularly scheduled visit with you, Stewart, and I appreciate you
coming on with us each and every week during the
college football season. My friend, thank you? Do we have
Stuart thought we did? Hold on a second? Okay, all right, yeah,
(40:39):
I can hear you now. Thank you for coming on
all your Stewart. I appreciate it.
Speaker 10 (40:43):
Yeah, absolutely, thank you.
Speaker 1 (40:45):
More than anything. How you feeling for people to know
you had a little bit of a rough go getting
out of Atlanta? It sounds like a lot of people
did and then came down with a little bug as
Well's how Stuart Mandel doing today?
Speaker 10 (40:57):
Better today? But it's been a rough way to stay
in the least. Yeah, I ended up spending about forty
eight hours longer in Atlanta than I was expecting. But
you know, it's already the longest season college football history,
so they decided to add a couple more days on.
Speaker 1 (41:09):
For me, there's a lot to discuss about the season
that just wrapped up, and we'll do that here in
just a couple of seconds. By the way, our big
news out here today, I'm sure you heard Pete Carroll
back in the NFL. He's going to coach the Las
Vegas Raiders. I know there was some thought at one
point maybe he'd go back to college, but I don't
know if that's going to happen much anymore. With guys
that have been around, we've seen probably see more coaches
(41:31):
leave college, and I don't want to go back, right.
Speaker 10 (41:34):
Yeah, I would imagine Pete Carroll's watch what's going on
in college with the last three years and said no, thanks.
You know, he is his I mean it's so long
ago now with his excess a USC was entirely about
how brag he was at the high school, agreeing, and
that's been you know, obviously de emphasized quite a bit
in favor of all the other things. Hey, Bill Belichick's coming,
you know, you know if he if he's successful, maybe
(41:55):
that will send signals on the other better in NFL coaches,
they should come come to college.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
I'm gonna get to a bigger pictures of recruiting and
stuff and how to build a French a you know,
a winning team in a second. What's been made out
of the twenty million dollars spent on the roster for
Ohio State. Well, we'll get to that in a heartbeat.
Let me let me be a bigger picture though, Stuart.
Now you just mentioned the longest season in college football history,
the twelve team college playoff for the first time. The
two teams that got there didn't have a buye. They
(42:21):
had to win the extra game along the way, and
we get Notre Dame in Ohio State on what ends
up being for a while looked like it's gonna be
a blowout and end up being a pretty competitive game
at the end, as Notre Dame put a little push
on before falling short. How would you summarize the twelve
team playoff in year one?
Speaker 10 (42:38):
I mean, I think it accomplished most of what it
was trying to accomplish.
Speaker 5 (42:42):
It made everybody.
Speaker 10 (42:44):
It made people engage in college football throughout the postseason.
You know, we talked about this in the past, a
positive effect on the other Bowl in terms of how
it played out. You know, in theory through ESPN, you
would want nothing more than an Ohio State over name
National Championship game, like those are the biggest TV brand
college football and no our games right up there. You know,
you saw them along for the ride, and then the
(43:06):
TV nemb came out and it was you know, it's
a lot for cable television, no question, twenty something million people,
but third lowest since the CFT began the National Championship Game.
You know, that told me that the schedule is not ideal.
I kind of figured that going in. You just spended
the season by two weeks. It happened to be this
year Inauguration Day, you're in the middle of the NFL playoffs.
(43:29):
Probably lost to people along the way, as I would
put it, like it seemed like interest peaked around the
quarterfinals and then kind of stayed plateaued from there. So
they'll have to they'll have to think some more about
scheduling long term but in terms of like the football,
I don't knownd anbody couldn't have enjoyed watching those, you know,
the many of the great games. We've got many great
plays we got, you know, right down to the Jeremiah
(43:51):
Smith fifty six yard most a touch off, thirty six
yard catch, Jack Sawyer's you know scoop and score, the
Camp Scataboo touchdown path Like, there were just so many
memorable moments.
Speaker 11 (44:02):
In this play.
Speaker 1 (44:04):
I I, yeah, the tem numbers were down, was down
twelve percent from a year ago. I believe it was
with Michigan and Washington, which was played two weeks earlier,
if I'm not mistaken. I and I only know that too.
It because I was in Medford, Oregon. Because much like
you leaving the Atlanta our final Seahawk game, I covered
last season at Glendale, Arizona, which proved to be Pete's
(44:25):
last game. We also had issues flying. It's weird end
of the season. Those of us are covered football always
seem to have issues flying home. But I remember that
one being a lot earlier. I kind of wonder if
Inauguration Day really kind of messed it up. And I
say that just knowing how many people were watching the
various balls, the coverage. It's the polarizing election for sure,
(44:46):
with with Trump backing off. I mean, there's so many
things going on. I mean, I think next year might
be a better test case in a litmus to test.
But I don't know what you can do with the
schedule right because you need some time off. Can you
get rid of confidence? You know? I don't think you
tell me. I don't think anybody's got an appetite to
get rid of the conference championship weekend. The one thing you
could do. Jess is not gonna like this because she
(45:08):
covers it every year. Could you do something Army Navy
weekend instead? I don't know, Stuart, what could be the answers?
Speaker 10 (45:16):
Well, I mean I think they I've been saying this
for three years. They need to shift the season up
a week because you do need a week off. You
do need Army Navy to get their own week you know,
you want to keep those things. You can't keep things
every exactly as they are and have these guys play.
It's enough that they're playing sixteen seventeen games and then
don't even give them a week off before the playoffs start.
(45:37):
But we already have games on week zero. There's no
reason why that can't be week one, and everything shifts
up a week and then you can keep it on
the same exact schedule it was up until this year.
You would play the first round games, you would move
Army Navy up a week. You'd play the first round
games the week that's currently Army Navy, you'd play the
quarterfinals the week that the first round was this year,
(45:58):
and you'd go back to having semis on Year's Day,
which is as it should be.
Speaker 5 (46:02):
You know.
Speaker 10 (46:03):
That was the weirdest part of the whole thing to
me was the semis were in like a Thursday and
Friday in the middle of January.
Speaker 5 (46:08):
It was weird.
Speaker 10 (46:10):
You're probably right. The inauguration they had a big effect.
The other thing we don't know is you know you're
playing it, you play it's wedge now the championship games
wedged in between the divisional and the conference championship round
of the NFL. And so whenever it's a big event
like this and they're talking about TV rating, college football
fans are going to watch. You put the game on
three AM. They'll find a way to watch it. It's
the ESPN gets to those big, big numbers by getting
(46:31):
in or casual people who don't follow us clostly, who
can kind of take it or leave it. And apparently
on people chose to watch something else that night.
Speaker 1 (46:39):
Well, and I see, yeah, and I'll just I'll kind
of stand by what my guess and I'm just a
guess that I think the just knowing. I've got so
many friends that are and different text threads with people.
That was just Monday was a day that we're at
whatever side of the aisle you lean on and whatever
whoever you voted for, Monday was a day you were
paying attention to a lot of things and maybe split
(47:01):
between football and what have you. I loved I didn't
mind the Thursday Friday semis and here's why, because we're
so used to Thursday football. And I mean, I'm Friday
football is fine with me. Monday night championship game, Monday
night football just brought that up yesterday. I'm kind of
missing it, man, like this week the last few days,
like we haven't had football. Like I do hockey for
(47:21):
a living, so I'm okay, but more football the better,
and heck hext do her. We saw that with the
Bowl games, right, I mean all through December, people two
point five million people on average tuning in to watch
a bowl game that had nothing to do with the CFP.
You're right, college football fans will find it, they'll watch it,
and I think if nothing else, I would wrap it
up with this. I don't know if you agree. I
think that the twelve team playoff it was a success
(47:41):
for all of college football, not just even the twelve
teams in it.
Speaker 5 (47:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (47:47):
Absolutely, it was a success for the Pop Tarts Bowl.
It was a success just a Helma Bowl. You know,
a cat More FANUI. You didn't make the playoffs, but
they had this amazing season and they were in the
hunt right till the end of There were a few
other team like that as well. And then look, I
think tas football fans outside the South really enjoyed a
season in which the SEC was you know, it's two
(48:09):
years ago. They haven't they haven't played in the SEC
championship game, but even more so this year, to have
the two Midwest teams, it's been a it's a it's
been a refreshing change for people who are tired of
that SEC narrative.
Speaker 1 (48:21):
Stuart Mandell's joining us. We're doing we did a we're
doing a wellness check on Stewart after not feeling well
and having a hard time getting out of Atlanta. Has anybody
done that for Greg Sankee, the SEC commissioner? How's he doing?
Speaker 10 (48:33):
Saw Greg? I saw all those guys uh in Atlanta
and they were holding their their meetings. But yeah, I mean, look,
Paul Finbaums was taking this drive right, he's been going
on TV thing the Big Ten's world. Now they don't
the SCC is going to be back. Like everybody who's
who's talking on their grave, it's going to be it's
not gonna it's not might not look so good this
(48:53):
time next year, right, you know, after all the all
the the you know, the people who were saying Alabama
should have been in ole Mis should have been in
like I think it ended up. You know, it couldn't
have repudiated that more.
Speaker 1 (49:06):
What do we learn about Ohio State's roster structure and
how that affects, you know, because it's kind of a
little different what Notre Dame went through in terms of
how much they were getting you know, nil going and
what Ohio State, I mean twelve publicized Ohio State, you know,
twenty million dollars their athletic director. I think was pretty open.
You wrote about this, pretty open about it, the twenty
million dollars being spent. They did have some key transfers,
(49:27):
but it feels like a lot of what they spent
money on was retention of guys that maybe could have
gone to the NFL. Albeit guys that would have probably
been day or two or three picks, but we just
we know three them out here. There's three guys from
the Northwest that were big time recruits coming out of
high school, especially the top two guys, j T Twoamalo
and A Mecca as well. Those two, those two guys
(49:48):
were huge recruits. They stayed their entire time at Ohio State,
got retained. You know, Sawyer's a Columbus guy. So what
did we really learn, if anything? Bigger picture about putting
a roster together to pete for a national title? Do
you have to spend upwards of eight figures?
Speaker 10 (50:06):
Yeah, I think this is the price. Actually, I think
that price has already been blown out of the water
by somebody else. The problem is most of it is secret,
you know, in Ross York. For whatever reason, side to
publicize that twenty million dollar number to quota kind of
a target on their back, and it also just made
it seem like they're the only ones doing this, and
that's absolutely not the case behind the scenes. I mean,
we just saw on three reported that Jeremiah Smith has
(50:28):
an offer from somebody for four and a half million
dollars next year they'll transfer there. There was even higher
numbers than that being mentioned for Quinn viewers. Now, you
got to take it all with a grain salt. Unless
you've seen the contract, you're relying on somebody's word. But
I've heard enough stories like that now that I think
the number when I'm finding is from year to year,
you can't keep up with how much the numbers are
(50:48):
going up. So just when you wrap your head around, okay,
nohredain't paid one point five million for a quarter for
a starting quarterback, suddenly you find out every quarterback that
in the quartal is getting seven figures. Some of them
are getting a lot more than that. Next year. If the
House settlement goes through, which is no sure thing, you'll
have every school to be able to offer twenty million
to their athletes. That's all athletes, and then the collective
(51:10):
whenever they can throw on top of that. So you know,
I think two things that stand out to me is,
like you said, it's about retention. You know, yeah, it
cost money to go into the portal, but it also
costs money to keep your guys from either going to
the portal or in their case, going pro. It's also
just not realistic to go to do that year after
year after year. And so I did my early top
twenty five at Ohio State outside the top five because
(51:32):
all those guys that they paid all that money to keep,
you know, you kept them for one more year. Now
they're done done. And how you can replace fifteen senior
starters most of them are we're playing the NFL in
one year, You're probably not.
Speaker 5 (51:45):
Now.
Speaker 10 (51:45):
I don't know that they have to fall back as
far as Michigan did. So it's gonna be really hard
the days where Alabama just won the national championship, plugged
somebody some new guys, and did again the next year.
It's gonna be awfully hard to do that in this
model where everybody's free agent every year, and it costs
a lot of money. And right now we're still asking
(52:05):
you're asking your fans and your donors to fun posts
of this to just keep asking them to keep giving, giving, giving,
more and more is probably not realistic.
Speaker 1 (52:14):
I wanted to kind of touch it on that a
little bit because I did watch Listen. I'm a sucker
for it. There's some people that don't like preseason top
twenty five, and those people probably really hate the way
too early end of the season top twenty fives for
you know, eight months from now. I'm a sucker for it, Stuart,
so I read it right away. I'm Penn State number
one for Stewart, by the way, coming up next season. No, Washington,
you're not in his top twenty five. I know you
(52:35):
think you're a power. You're not. Cooks weren't either, by
the way, I don't know what's going on with the Stewart.
Come on, now, we got a guy from South Dakota
State coaching this. Now we should be fine. But you've
got and I bring this up. You've got Penn State, Texas,
Notre Dame, LSU, Clemson one through five, and I'm just
gonna go through this real quick. Well House State six,
Georgia seven, Oregon eight, Arizona State. And I think a
(52:57):
lot of it has to do with Sam Levit coming
back number nine and b Yu ten. A lot of
the same cast of characters, right, So is college football
going to be cyclical or maybe you're going to see
something like.
Speaker 10 (53:11):
An idiot is what I mean? We saw this year
like half those teams you just said we weren't arisona state.
Let's not forget let's pick dead last in the Big twelve,
and there will be teams like that this year. There
will be teams nobody is remotely paying attention to that
will will sneak into the playoffs. But if I could
predict that right now, yeah, I'd be in Vegas, right,
(53:32):
So you can only kind of go by what you have.
Tenn State is the team that seems to be most
close to that Ohio State model last year, or even
Michigan the year for that, where they had a bunch
of guys who can be easily turned pro the two
running backs, the quarterback, you raler, their defensive end like
and they're all coming back and that could not have
been cheap. So now, obviously it's fair to question whether
(53:56):
James Franklin can actually produce a number one team in
the country. But he didn't get the Final four this
year and very nearly could have made the National Championship game.
So I don't think they're that far off, and you
can only really go by what's what's proven, and they
have the most proven, top ing guys going back.
Speaker 1 (54:13):
A lot is quarterback driven, too, isn't it, Because I'm
looking through here, you know your list here. I mean,
obviously Drew Allers comes into play, Ohio State's going to
start a new quarterback, but a guy they think highly
has been in the system for a while. Uh you know,
I mean you go through LSU's got nus Meyer coming back.
Notre Dame's gonna have a new quarterback, another guy they
feel good about. I mean, you can kind of go
through the list of Texas obviously well off with arch manning,
(54:35):
Arizona State with Sam Levin. I mean you kind of
go through that list. A lot of it is kind
of quarterback driven.
Speaker 10 (54:39):
It feels like, yeah, Closton has Kate club nickback, who
I think did the American kind of guy. You know,
he doesn't have a quarterback coming back for once his
Oregon and so we're going to see, you know, after
two years of getting like Bonix and Dylan Gabriel, what
what Dante mor can give you? We saw him a
little bit of Uclis tree Bresh when he struggled. It's
(55:01):
becoming to the point where it's you know, it's considered
now rare if you do have a guy that you
came up through your own system. So Julian Sayan was
a highly ranked recruit last year, you know, obviously didn't
play this year for Ohio State. We'll be expected to
win the job next year. And that's a totally normal,
reasonable path for for a recruits to take. And yet
you know, you look at these other teams, Well, they've
(55:21):
got a four year guy, They've got a five year guy.
Ox Manning's been waiting his turn for three years.
Speaker 11 (55:25):
So I'm not ruling out.
Speaker 10 (55:27):
Ohio State, but they just have so much of that
national championship team to replace.
Speaker 1 (55:33):
I do like more though at Oregon. I you know,
we watched him play Jess. You probably covered him down
there a UCLA when they played in the Wazoo. His
his freshman year. As such a horrible situation, like the
program itself was felt like kind of a shambles. They
weren't they weren't a good spot. I think there might
be something there. You put them the right system. I
think that I think they could be okay and we'll see,
(55:53):
We'll see how it goes well. Stuart. I'm telling you,
it was a ton of fun this year. I love
talking college football with you every week. I just love
I love college football. The podcast for Bruce is great
as well the audible so people can go check that out.
And because Jess has your number unless you change it,
unless you change as news and breaking news warrants, and
who knows, it's college football and college athletics. I have
(56:14):
a feeling that will happen at some point during the
time we may be calling you again over the next
few months as it warrants, if that's okay.
Speaker 10 (56:22):
Yeah, I'm waiting for our usual January cushion carousel moves.
It hasn't happened yet, but yeah, it's been great guys.
Thanks for having me on every week. I have fun
talk to Cosh football with you.
Speaker 1 (56:31):
You can, yeah, you can touch And you can find
all of Stuart's work at the Athletic, the Athletic dot Com,
go the NCAAF page as football page. They do it.
I say it and I mean it, Stuart. You guys
do a great job, and I mean a great job
at the Athletic covering college football. So keep up the
good work. We'll talk soon, thank you. All right, there
you go. Stuart Mandel joining us as he did every week,
(56:51):
usually on Thursdays at twelve twenty, A little under the
weather getting out of Atlanta apparently just an absolute gong show.
Speaker 12 (56:59):
He got sick on top of it like that.
Speaker 6 (57:01):
It's anxiety to have travel issues and then being sick.
Speaker 12 (57:05):
Oh, poor guy.
Speaker 1 (57:06):
I remember I was coming back the two thousand and
so the twelve season when they lost to Atlanta, the
Seahawks and the divisional round, the Matt Bryant field goal
that missed and then they got again. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah.
And so we had gone to d C the previous week.
It's the first year I was working full time for
the well mostly full time for the TV station. We'd
(57:26):
gone to d C the week before for the you know,
the RG three game where he blew his knee and
Clemens Blue his knee and House Blue his knee on
the sand and all that. But we were there for
a week doing live shots every morning outside the frozen
Jefferson Memorial. Oh yeah, on the river.
Speaker 12 (57:42):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (57:43):
Then we come home. It's cold there, come home immediately,
go right back on the road and do the same
thing the next week out in Atlanta, and it was like,
you know, it's you know what it's like, it's their
long days, mornings and afternoon live shots and and I
remember getting on the plane to come home from Atlanta
and I related to do it this week. We weren't delayed,
but I remember I sat on the plane like, man,
(58:04):
I think I might be sick, and I just don't
get sick that often.
Speaker 6 (58:07):
Oh no.
Speaker 1 (58:08):
And by the time I got home, Man, I was
flying to urgent Care. I was like, yeah, I gotta
I gotta go get something. No, No, just like flew like, yeah,
I had flu like symptoms, Jess. And normally when I
have flu likes. Normally, when I have flu like symptoms,
it's self induced. Maybe one too many Georgetown pops or
you got that Sunday flu, one too many Odyssey siders
from Seattle sider no lie or whatever. Yeah, that's usually
(58:30):
what my flu like symptoms are. No, those are legit.
I'm like, oh, I'm just done. I'm yeah. It's like
when you have to travel, it's the worst.
Speaker 6 (58:37):
Well, your body kind of like knows because your brain
is like aware that it's the end of the season,
and it you know, it knows during the season that
you gotta go, you gotta be up. I get I
used to always get sick right at the end of
football season.
Speaker 1 (58:49):
I remember going to remember thinking, oh, maybe purple she'd
get me some time off. No, no, no, that didn't
happen either. All right, Uh, heavy cross that I bear sometimes. Yes,
work in the sports really heavy lifting here, isn't it.
I know you feel bad for me. It's really hard.
We're talking sports every day you eat. Get you moron,
you're talking sport sports. Shut up.
Speaker 12 (59:09):
Talking is hard sometimes.
Speaker 1 (59:12):
Always remembering your equipment in your garage. That's why grobbling
to your wife, what do I owe her? Now?
Speaker 12 (59:20):
Well, dowalentime to day is.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
Don't go down that broat, don't go down there.
Speaker 1 (59:23):
Well, you know what she gets. She's worth the point
in our life. If I do like, if I was
like get her something or do like, she's like, we
don't need I didn't need that, you don't need to
spend money, I'd be in trouble. Well, she's kind of
doing what you're doing, you know, the eating thing and
all that. Well, I'm not meal prepping, just kind of
eating better right now, Okay, Okay, I don't know. I'm
just screwed. You know what, Maybe I'll get her a
(59:46):
cocktail of something sort yeah, yeah, all right, mild mannerdy infant. Yeah,
well I'm not that exactly. All right, we'll come back.
I think we're gonna hear we didn't get a chance.
We want to revisit the story Danny just kind of
touched on it a minute ago, the stories that we
(01:00:06):
heard about each Euro and when he first came to
spring training driving loopanella crazy. We'll revisit those coming up next.
Speaker 3 (01:00:18):
Now, back to Inverness on your home for the NFL
playoffs and Super Bowl fifty nine. Sports Radio ninety three
point three kJ r F mus down.
Speaker 1 (01:00:30):
All right, we're gonna get to uh, in just a second,
we're gonna get to John Oliver Larry Stone. A fun
little thing. We both those guys told the same exact story.
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
And then we heard that.
Speaker 1 (01:00:41):
We heard from Daddy O'Neal as well, which is awesome
on each Euro his first spring training and first impressions.
Before I do that, I'm gonna do something on the air. Andrews,
did you vemmo me yet? Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:00:52):
Do you have a venmo that I can send you.
Speaker 1 (01:00:54):
Yes, Okay, hold on right, I'm gonna trust you. I'm
gonna trust you. I'll I'll give you my venmo in
a second.
Speaker 2 (01:01:01):
Okay, Yeah, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:01:03):
I just pulled a crisp ten dollars bill out of
my wallet. I'm gonna hand it over to Window Queen,
my great producer here next to me, Jessamine McIntyre. Yes,
the Window Queen. We're we're doing. We're the Stillklalmic casino
sports book soon to be the stole Clomicate casino in
the hotel, but the sports book, Jessamine, while we hear
(01:01:24):
the sound you've already heard and cut up. Yes, I
would like you to go to the window for our
friend Anderson Hurst going to have Now we and comrade,
do you need to write this down or do you
know what he's gonna do?
Speaker 12 (01:01:37):
He already texted it. I know exactly what he's doing.
Speaker 1 (01:01:39):
Money line, money line.
Speaker 12 (01:01:40):
Money line, money line, Chiefs Commanders.
Speaker 1 (01:01:42):
So money line, money line bills and Eagles? Is that right?
Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
And uh no, that is incorrect.
Speaker 4 (01:01:49):
I wanted Chief's commanders, come on, Andy Reid and Dan Quinn.
Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
Let's go your your ten dollars money line bet, sir Okay,
we'll pay fifty dollars and sixty cents to win beautiful,
according to the snow caual Me Casino sports book app in.
Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
The palm of my hand, I'm in. Let's do it.
Speaker 1 (01:02:06):
Jefsman will go to the window. She will get you
a ticket and bring it back for you on Monday.
Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
Yes, I love it.
Speaker 1 (01:02:13):
Now, by monday it may be worthless, and she'll just
hand you a piece of paper.
Speaker 12 (01:02:17):
Yeah, all right on the back, just so you know, or.
Speaker 1 (01:02:20):
By Monday that that piece of paper could be worth
fifty American dollars for you.
Speaker 2 (01:02:24):
Plus sixty cents. Don't forget that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:26):
Yeah, and I know what did you say? People were
giving you a hard time because it's not a massive bet. Yeah, no,
that's fine, don't worry about it.
Speaker 12 (01:02:33):
It's some skin in the game.
Speaker 1 (01:02:34):
You know what. You just need a little juice. You
don't need a lot of juice, exactly. I'll tell you
right now. It's amazing what a five, ten, twenty dollars
a little action could do for you when you're watching
a game. The stress it can induce for a relatively
small payoff is remarkable. Yes, and honestly somewhat benign. And
(01:02:54):
harmless for those of you that do worry about such things.
Speaker 12 (01:02:57):
All right, one, so much money that one time.
Speaker 6 (01:03:00):
The only bet I made was the super Bowl and
it was for both teams to each score in every quarter.
Speaker 1 (01:03:06):
Oh that was last air.
Speaker 12 (01:03:07):
That was Yeah I won.
Speaker 1 (01:03:09):
Oh and that was And then you mocked our former
midday host mister Moore about that.
Speaker 12 (01:03:13):
Oh sure did Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:03:15):
Who probably who probably hasn't won a wager in I
don't know twenty years.
Speaker 12 (01:03:19):
Yeah, you want to be so badly just so that
I could say how easy it was.
Speaker 1 (01:03:24):
You were all about it, and for you it was easy.
That's like that's like every now and then you'll have
like a poker party, like we do this in our
neighbor all the time, and someone that just doesn't know, like,
did this. I've got three of I got three cards,
I got three kings, I've got two aces? Does that?
How do I do against you only have two threes?
(01:03:47):
Do I win? Yes? You win?
Speaker 12 (01:03:49):
Well?
Speaker 1 (01:03:49):
Jackasss? You know, for me, that's kind of just you know.
Speaker 6 (01:03:53):
Just odds were pointed out to me on both teams
like individually to score in each quarter, right, and then
it was completely skewed for both of them and it's like, well,
the odds are pretty in favor of them each scoring
individually in each quarter, So then why is it so
impossible for them to both score in each quarter?
Speaker 1 (01:04:13):
And as you proved, it was easy, easy money. It
was very easy. Yeah, all right, let me get you
go place that bad. I would expect you to come
up with even more. We're back up here prop bets.
By the way, if you're coming up still, Cloma Coaxino.
We're just talking to our friend Nick, who runs the
sportsbook here. The prop bets, superboll all that stuff. Some
stuff will come out Monday, the majority of their because
(01:04:35):
everyone likes the prop bets. You know how long this is.
You know they don't do anthem because that's too you
can manipulate it. But all the other ones, all the
other fun prop bets, those ones they'll have out by
Thursday next week at the latest. Okay, So that all right,
and let's get to this. This was fun. So each
dro gets inducted into the Hall of Fame. Awesome on
every level. It wasn't unanimous. We move on from that.
(01:04:58):
We had two people that knew him well won as
a next teammate, John Olarud, the other Larry Stone, who
was kind of the godfather of baseball coverage in our town,
just retired for the Seattle Times, and we asked them
the same thing, like, what was the initial thought and
reaction to the each Euro arrival at Peory at spring training?
(01:05:19):
Here is Eachiro's former teammate, also a former batting champion,
former Cougar Go Koug's John olarud Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:05:26):
You know, I think that, you know, we were looking
to put together a good year. We'd heard a lot
of good things about Ichiro. I remember talking to my
coach with the New York Mets, Bobby Valentine and Tom Robson,
they coached over there, and they said, hey, this Echiro
guy is really good. And I remember him saying, hey,
(01:05:47):
he's bigger than Elvis in Japan. That's how good he is,
and that's how popular he is. And so I was like, oh, okay,
you know, well, we'll see how he does. And he
had a very unique style hitting. But you know, yeah,
I think Lou and each Euro clashed because if you
ever watched Eachi Row take batting practice, he would just
(01:06:09):
hit one home run after the other, pull every ball,
hit one home home run after another, and Lou loved that.
But then in the game, especially in spring training, he
would just hit a one hopper to third base, the
third baseman running out of the box and get thrown out.
Game after game he would do that, and it was
driving Lou nuts. He would say, you know, would you
(01:06:33):
pull the ball one time in a game just so
that I know you can do it, because you'd see
it in batting practice all the time. And then you
know what I heard eachiu Ro said to Lou was
I'm just setting them up for the season. And and
you know, I think it was Al Martin that told
me that. And he was just like, wow, that's confidence,
(01:06:54):
you know, to say something like that. It was a
little hard to believe that he would say something. Maybe
he didn't know exactly what he was saying, but uh wow,
was he setting him up? No, you know, couldn't have
been a truer statement. As he goes out and just
I think, what did he get? Two hundred and forty
hits his first year? Just unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (01:07:18):
So good, All right, that's John all the route. Here's
Larry Stone with a very similar tale.
Speaker 11 (01:07:23):
One of the most famous stories of the of the
intro sort of the Etro origin. It's fable, is you
know in spring training he was hitting all these weak
grounders to the left side, and we was getting more
and more exasperated.
Speaker 8 (01:07:36):
You know, when did this guy can this guy pull
the ball?
Speaker 1 (01:07:39):
Can he drive the ball?
Speaker 11 (01:07:40):
And you know he was he said it loud enough
for each other here. And then one game I was
there that day and each Ro hit a just a
rocket on the berm in right field after Lou told him,
you know, you got to show me that you could
turn on a ball and.
Speaker 10 (01:07:57):
Came back to the duck out and said to Lou,
is that or do you like that?
Speaker 1 (01:08:01):
Or something like that.
Speaker 11 (01:08:02):
Okay, he had his own he had his own way
to prepare and he was going to change it for
you know, he wasn't going to come in and accelerate
things just to show Lou that he could do it.
He had he had to. He had stages of preparation
and and it wasn't until you know, the middle of
the spring that he was ready to to to start
(01:08:22):
pulling the ball.
Speaker 10 (01:08:23):
And and then he just took off from there.
Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
How lucky were we to be able to watch him?
You know, you think about it, it's like and there's
different levels of Hall of Famers, right, Like there's there's
all kinds of different levels of guys that are Hall
of Famers. And you know, we we we discussed it
on this show a lot amongst the three of us.
It's I'm a big believer in like you can you
can kind of look at somebody and say hall of Fame,
yes or no. Right, I think there's a I think
there's a Hall of Fame eye test. It's it's the
(01:08:48):
old It's just like the old porn thing like it's
hard to find. It's hard to find. But I know
what when I said, I see and I think that's
the key. And but there's different levels of that, much
like somebody told me once. I don't know this for
a fact, there's different levels of porn. I don't know.
Let's not go through. But but but there I've heard that.
Speaker 12 (01:09:12):
I'm really glad I did. I've never heard that because
I don't even want to think of what that means.
Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
Yeah, but you'll think about it all weekend so you
can think later. Anyway, as we were saying that, a
different levels of Hall of Famer, like like the guys
that got in with him, Billy Wagner right, Okay, he's
a Hall of Famer. I guess probably there's probably people
that watched him pitch all the time, especially like oh, yeah,
he's a Hall of Famer. Yeah, but eachiro's like like, yeah,
that's a Hall of Fame, easy, yeah, Like you watch
Patrick Mahomes, Hall of Famer, right, absolute, no brainer. Hall
(01:09:41):
of Famer.
Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
Bobby Wagner.
Speaker 1 (01:09:43):
Bobby Wagner six times first team All Pro, three other
times second team All Pro. No, only two other middle
linebackers ever have done that same thing, first ballot Hall
of Famer. Other quarterbacks in the NFL, are they a
Hall of Famer? I mean, let's just use Russ Maybe
maybe not now I say no, right right, but like
(01:10:05):
right right, he didn't pass the eye test right each
row almost from that first year Hall of Famer, Like
you're like, wow, everything he did in Japan, he just
did hear. And then some like like within three years
he's like, yeah, that guy's a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 12 (01:10:20):
And it's amazing to me that he started to hear
in twenty seven.
Speaker 6 (01:10:23):
It's amazing, Like that's just I forgot that and remembered
it so many times throughout his career since I've been
out in Seattle.
Speaker 2 (01:10:30):
Yeah, and I've heard people mention, this is he your
hit king?
Speaker 12 (01:10:32):
Ian?
Speaker 2 (01:10:33):
Is he your true hit king? All because the games
play Yeah, No, because of the ones in Japan, the
ones in Japan. Oh no, because people have said like,
oh yeah all time.
Speaker 12 (01:10:43):
I don't think that.
Speaker 2 (01:10:44):
Because I've thrown.
Speaker 1 (01:10:46):
Oh this is a Friday, Why did you do that?
Made him think No, there's there's no thought process behind it,
because it pissed. Here's what pisses me. I hate when
I hear stuff like that because he did in Japan.
But here's the other thing. It's the same thing when
I hear, well, you know, Caitlin Clark is the all
time leading scorer in college basketball for women. She is
(01:11:09):
not for dudes, she didn't pass Pete Maravich. Pete Marrivitch
played a different game. Tara Van Dervier isn't the all
time winning as coach in college basketball over I guess was, like, no,
it's a different sport, it's a different league, You're playing
against different people. Like why we want to do stuff
like that, I don't understand. Like, the greatest women's college
(01:11:34):
basketball scorer of all time was Kelsey Plum. Now it's
Caitlin Clark. They're not Pete Maravich, John Wooden is not
Tara van der Beeer or Pat Summit. Ihiro Suzuki played
all those years in Japan before he played against the
best pitchers in the world, who, by the way, were
not in Japan in different league. No, it's not. Now
(01:11:57):
we could have a debate about a lot of things
in terms of records with baseball and other sports with
the globalization of the sport, like like what eachiro did
was harder than what guys did in the twenties, thirties
and forties and fifties before a before the game was
you know, disegregated because the segregation of the game of
the Negro leagues. You weren't playing against the best, right
(01:12:18):
there were and there were no foreign players, There were
no Dominican or Latin players, right, so you didn't have
that going on. The same thing with hockey, like people
will complain about Alexandrovtchkin. Well, what he did well, he
played a different game. He played against the best in
the world. Gretzky did at the end of his career,
but not early, and Gordon Howell only played against Canadians, Right,
It's the modern athlete has that accomplishes something has done
(01:12:41):
a lot more because of the globalization of the world
in a lot of ways. Golfers the same way. And
we're watching golf right every sport. You can say, I'm hey,
Jack and Arnie were great, but now we have the
Asian influence in the world of golf. Those guys didn't
have to deal with that, right like, no, okay, see,
why did you do that?
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
I'm sorry, I'm sorry. We had a break too out
of why.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Hump humph shump of the water.
Speaker 12 (01:13:03):
That's a shot right there, especially being super late to break.

To the game, they're they're a real good team, a
heavy team, a good four checking team, and more of
a it's not so much a physical for check as
it is one. They get through the puck first two
and establish offensive zone. And they do it, you know,
they do it with a big line, they do it
with the top line, they do it with all four lines,
(01:15:48):
and we weren't able to you know, with our execution
and our puck play, we weren't able.
Speaker 11 (01:15:55):
To stop it.

Yeah.

go to in the South Sound. All Right, Ranger National Championship.
It's done it over with college football season, has done
it over with sword at All Star Game, right, Senior
Bowl and all that fun stuff and colmbines and all
those things. But kind of I mentioned it's kind of
(01:19:05):
a bittersweet day, isn't it when college football ends?
Speaker 5 (01:19:08):
Oh, no question about it.
Speaker 14 (01:19:09):
And I mean it used to be that, you know,
I would always think that this was a bittersweet day
just because of the fact that the college football seasons ending.
Speaker 5 (01:19:18):
To me, it's a bittersweet day now because.
Speaker 14 (01:19:20):
It just feels like, you know, you're you're just opening
up the floodgates to all the transfers, all the nil stuff,
all the underclassmen who are oh, am I going to
go to the draft?
Speaker 5 (01:19:30):
Am I not going to go out of the draft?
You go into the draft. So it's kind of this
like purgatory kind of a period here.
Speaker 14 (01:19:38):
And so just because of the wave that college football
and NFL draft landscape has changed over the last year
or somebody, it's yes, it very much feels like the
bitter sweet day now that the twenty twenty five uh,
you know college foot or twenty twenty four I guess
college football season is complete.
Speaker 1 (01:19:55):
Well, let's get right to what we saw on Monday.
We talked about it last week and and basically it was, hey,
you know, are they going to be they? Ohio State
the team that we think twenty million dollars a lot
of guys are stuck around and got paid and all
those things. And yeah, they looked apart will push late
by Notre Dame. But I'm assuming you weren't surprised by
the result.
Speaker 6 (01:20:16):
I was not.
Speaker 14 (01:20:17):
You know, we talked about that, We thought that, you know,
I think that Ohio State and game time was an
eight and a half point favorite, and you kind of
put me on the spial over.
Speaker 5 (01:20:26):
I almost wanted to slide over a little bit of
money to you so you could put a bet for me,
you know, because I was I.
Speaker 14 (01:20:33):
Was confident that they were going to be at least
a touchdown victor. I wasn't so sure that they were
going to get into the double digits. And of course
at the very end.
Speaker 5 (01:20:41):
There with Notre Dame missing the kick and you know,
all those kinds of stuff.
Speaker 14 (01:20:45):
I mean, it made things a little bit complicated, but
it really other than the very opening drive by Notre Dame,
it felt like Ohio State kind of controlled the game
from the outset. And for the reason that we discussed
that Ohio State's dominant defensive line, you know, featuring three
draft eligible players and the big guy in the middle,
Tai Leek Williams, then the two defensive ends, Jack Sawyer
(01:21:08):
and j T. Tuamalo, they really controlled that game, I thought.
And then definitely, and to your point about Ohio State
and twenty million dollars, if they had that, they spent
on players, basically recruiting them to Ohio State. You see,
Quinn Shawn Judkins, the running back that we discussed for
a long time on the show last week. Yeah, I
(01:21:29):
mean he goes for three touchdowns. He was a transfer
from Old Miss. Caleb Downs with the star safety for
Ohio State in this football game. He was a much
valued transfer from Alabama. And of course the freshman wide
receiver Jeremiah Smith that we've been talking about. Everybody's been
talking about him, you know, again, true freshman for Ohio State.
(01:21:50):
To call his number at the biggest moment of the
game and for him to make the play that he did,
get three and get so wide open as he did,
really is again a testament to all the talent that
they were able to bring to Ohio State.
Speaker 5 (01:22:04):
So I was not at all surprises the buck guys
were the national champions.
Speaker 1 (01:22:07):
I'm gonna get a couple of things including Seahawks conversation,
top overall pick and all that. But let me start.
We did not spend a lot of time talking about
Jack Sawyer this year. We you know, we jt obviously
from being from this neck of the woods and other
guys through out the year, but you know, Jack Sawyer
became a you know, immedia darling as well as a
star on the field during the college football playoffs, the
(01:22:27):
big defensive ligneman as you mentioned from Ohio State, who's
all buck Eye from there. Lived, you know, lived to
go there, went there in twenty nineteen, been there forever
in a day. What are the pro prospects in the draft?
Prospects for Jack Sawyer? Where does he project?
Speaker 14 (01:22:42):
You know, it's funny because I don't think that he's
going to work out quite as well as some of
the other edge rushers in this class. You know, for
my money, Penn State's abdual Carter is the most explosive,
uh you know pass rusher in this class has the
highest upside.
Speaker 5 (01:22:56):
I think ultimately you're going to see abdual Carter.
Speaker 14 (01:22:59):
Why it being a top three, top five selection Jack Sawyer,
I do think it's going to go in the first round.
But talking to scouts entering this season, Sawyer was you
as more of a day to prospect, and he is
one of those guys know that he is a better
football player than he is an athlete, and you know,
you sometimes we'll hear scouts say that like it's like
(01:23:20):
it's some kind of like you're degrading the player. I
think that's actually one of the biggest compliments that you
can give a player. And Sawyer just uses his hands well.
He is quick, He's not necessarily explosive off the snap.
He's not going to beat people very often with just
a pure speed rush. But he really varies the way
that he gets off the ball, if that he keeps
off as the tackles a little bit on their own heels.
(01:23:43):
And again, he chopped his hands really well. He is
powerful at the point of attack. He locates the football.
One of the things I like about Jack, so besides
the fact that he just seems like he always makes
the big play at big moments, is he gets his
hands in the passing lanes. And there's just so many
big defense ends out there. There are sixty four, sixty five,
sixty six that don't use that length to tip balls.
(01:24:05):
Last scrimmage, Jack Sawyer led all Power five edge rushers
with six passes broken up at the line of scrimmage.
And again, to me, those are turnovers. Those are bigger
than sacks many times. And so I think that Jack
Sawyer is a terrific player. I'd love to see him
in Seattle.
Speaker 5 (01:24:21):
I don't think the edge rusher is a huge area.
Speaker 14 (01:24:23):
Of concern for this club, considering what you have with
young players still under contracted like Boy Mafe, Derek Call, etc.
Speaker 5 (01:24:30):
Saying you know, getting Channan Nuosu back, but considering.
Speaker 14 (01:24:33):
That Draymond Jones is still owed an awful lot of money,
it hasn't really produced up to expectations, and Channinguosu again
is coming off of the significant injuries do some pretty
big coin himself. If Sawyer is available to see out
at number eighteen, he as well as JT, I think,
would both make a lotful lot of sense because again
not necessarily the biggest area of concern, but you're talking
(01:24:54):
about best player available stuff. That's something that Josh Snyder
has always preached and of course nobody he loves the
ability to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks quite as much
as Mike we Go.
Speaker 1 (01:25:04):
It is Rob rang brought to you by Ferrell'spizza Frelispizza
dot Com. We'll give Rob a couple of weeks off
here during the month of February before we hit him
up again and go heavy heart into a draft coverage
starting probably the first week in March or so. So
since we're gonna kind of put a bow on college football. Now,
let's talk a little bit about mock drafts and more importantly,
(01:25:25):
you know, and this is and I'm gonna preface this
by saying, nobody holding I'm not holding you to this.
You do multiple mock drafts, you go through the whole process,
and things are subject to change with workouts and senior
balls and all those things. But as of right now,
who is the number one pick.
Speaker 14 (01:25:43):
It's got a miche Dura Sanders. I mean, at least
in my opinion, he is the top quarterback in this class.
I know there's some debate with Miami's cam Ward. I
understand that if you just look at the YouTube or
the highlight reel of cam Ward, then sure, I think.
Speaker 5 (01:25:57):
That you can make an argument.
Speaker 14 (01:25:58):
Okay, he's got more flashy and exciting type of Patrick
Mahomes kind of plays outside the pockety, runs around a
little bit, throws the ball up there, and you know,
I'll be darne if he hasn't throw for a touchdown
or something, you know, something exciting. At the same time,
what you will see if you watch all of this taping,
and this is something that Washington State fans know all
too well, is that sometimes he throws the ball up
(01:26:20):
for grabs, and you know his receivers don't bail him.
How often he will scramble and then throw late across
the middle, and of course in the NFL that we're
going to get intercepted more often than not. So I
like cam Ward. I don't think that either he or
Sugar Sanders should be a top ten selection. But you've
got a Tennessee Titans, you know, squad that number one
(01:26:42):
overall is absolutely desperate for a quarterback.
Speaker 5 (01:26:45):
Will Levis has been proven to be exactly what most
of us thought. Will Levis would be.
Speaker 14 (01:26:50):
A guy with a million dollar arm but doesn't necessarily
read defenses at the lion of scrimmage very well. I mean,
he puts mayonnaise in his coffee crying out loud. Not
the guy that you necessarily want being in the face
of the franchise, you know. So again, I think that's
all said and down, you're gonna probably see the Tennessee
Titans basically back themselves into a corner and have to
(01:27:12):
select the quarterback.
Speaker 5 (01:27:13):
Now, who they should take is an entirely different conversation.
Speaker 14 (01:27:16):
We've talked so much about Travis Hunter that to me
is the elite prospect in this draft class.
Speaker 5 (01:27:21):
I think that he can help Tennessee's offense.
Speaker 14 (01:27:23):
And again because I believe that he's even better on
defense than he is a wide receiver, I think he
can help their defense. Also, to me, the only conversation
is if you are not going to go with quarterback,
then you need to go with Travis Hunter. And again,
there's never been a defensive back who's ever been the
number one.
Speaker 5 (01:27:40):
Overall selection, so that would be historic.
Speaker 14 (01:27:44):
Or you go with the aforementioned Abdual Carter because we
know how much the pass rushers are valued in today's NFL.
I also think there's a possibility that Tennessee just looks
to trade out of that that can acquire more picks.
I just don't know that there's going to be anybody
who's going to create enough buzz so that there I
think Tennessee has to choose between the best player available
again Abdual Carter, Travis Hunter, or just satisfy the absolute desperation,
(01:28:08):
desperate need for a quarterback. In my opinion, that would
be Schaduer Standards from Colorado. Either way, very good chance
I see a Colorado Busfalo Go number one overall. Either
Shuer standards or Travis Hunter.
Speaker 1 (01:28:19):
Well, we know Cleveland's got all kinds of issues, and
you know, the DeShawn Jackson horror Deshaun Watson horror show
continues in Cleveland. They've got the number two pick, as
you mentioned, Travis Hunter probably should be the guy to
go with. But do you think they go quarterback? And
it feels like it's two quarterbacks in the first round
and nobody else is the first round grade, right, So
if Cleveland doesn't, I mean, maybe they trade down and
(01:28:40):
hope to get cam Ward later. But it feels like
that would be the logical pick for Cleveland.
Speaker 14 (01:28:45):
But you're making a mistake of applying logic to the
Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 5 (01:28:49):
You know, I agree with you. I agree with you
one hundred percent. That's what Cleveland should do. They need
some type of consistency at quarterback, and whether it be
the field where.
Speaker 14 (01:29:00):
Deshaun Watson obviously is kind of you know, made a
mess of his reputation or or on the field.
Speaker 5 (01:29:07):
Frankly, he hasn't been.
Speaker 14 (01:29:08):
Nearly the player in Cleveland that he was early on
a Houston and obviously in the National championship at Clemson.
I just I think that Cleveland would love to take
a quarterback or move on from Deshaun Watson, but financially speaking,
they are basically locked into that contract. They would have
to eat more money than the Denver Broncos did this
(01:29:28):
past year with Russell Wilson. I just don't know that
Cleveland's going to be willing to do that. So at
this point, I do think that they're going to have
to basically choose between one of the non quarterbacks. I
think that for the Cleveland Browns it should be a
guy like a Travis Center. Again, I think he's an
exceptional talent. That said, I think we all understand the
Cleveland Browns. Their best player is clearly their defensive.
Speaker 5 (01:29:50):
End, Miles Garrett.
Speaker 14 (01:29:51):
And if you pair Miles Garrett with an explosive pass
rusher like an Abdual Carter, then you really do have
something pretty exciting there, especially considering explosive the offenses are
in that division. If you can slow down to Joe Burrow,
for example, then suddenly Cleveland can be competitive. So to me, again,
that's the more likely scenario is going to either go
(01:30:11):
with the edge rusher Abdual Carter from Penn State, or
the cornerback slash wide receiver Travis Hunter. For my money,
I would go with Hunter. I'm gonna go with what
the Cleveland Browns have historically done, and that would be
closer to the line of scrimmage and say Abdual Carter as.
Speaker 5 (01:30:25):
Far as if I was doing a mock draft right now.
Speaker 14 (01:30:27):
But again, for all the clean, the long suffering Cleveland
Browns fans out there, you know you Unfortunately you have
you have de SHAWNA.
Speaker 5 (01:30:34):
Watson.
Speaker 14 (01:30:35):
He is the quarterback until the until they make some
type of massive, massive change that I just don't expect
Cleveland to.
Speaker 5 (01:30:41):
Be willing to do.
Speaker 1 (01:30:43):
Rob rag joining us brought to by Frozeizzafroyespizza dot com.
All right, like I said, once we get to March
in April, that's what we would do. A deep dive
as a position by position and how how it affects
especially the Seattle Seahawks here and what they're looking for.
This is just kind of for fun little giggles here.
We're just gonna toss this. I'm gonna toss something at
I hear it's a good class or a good year
(01:31:04):
for interior offensive lineman. Maybe a little more depth on
the interior offensive Lineman. So if the Seahawks, if they're
sitting there at eighteen, and if they're sitting at eighteen
and Tyler Warren the tight end from Penn State, is there,
is there any way you pass on him?
Speaker 14 (01:31:20):
Not for me, I think the Tyler Warren is again
one of the one of the very few Blue Ship
caliber players in this draft class, and kind of like
we talked about with edge rushers, I don't think the
tight end is necessarily a huge area of concern for
this club, considering especially the way that A. J. Barner played.
Noah Fan, of course, is still under contract for the Seahawks.
(01:31:40):
Pharaoh Brown is a free agency yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:31:45):
And fans also camp Fan could be a cap casualty too,
We'll see, But yeah, I'm with you on Barner.
Speaker 14 (01:31:51):
But yeah, I think it would make an awful offense
for Noah Fan to be a a cap casualty just
because he is doing awful.
Speaker 2 (01:31:58):
Lot of money.
Speaker 5 (01:31:58):
And again I thought the A. J.
Speaker 14 (01:31:59):
Barner would the better overall player for seat, which is
you know, a little bit of a knock I guess
on Noah fense, but also very much you know, a
compliment to the rookie A J. Barner that said, neither
one of them are the player the tyler Lawren is,
I mean, two hundred and fifty five pounds.
Speaker 5 (01:32:15):
He runs like a receiver. He's got a great body control.
Speaker 14 (01:32:18):
I don't know that he's necessarily going to run into
four fours, but I feel confident is going to run
in the mid to high four five, go four six is.
He plays fast kind we're talking about before with the
Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer. Ton of Warrens the
heck of a football player and the balls in the air,
he just has a remarkable ability to kind of contort
in space, kind of hang in the air, and just
(01:32:40):
pluck it out of the air, out of the grasp
of defenders. I think frankly, that he has helped his
quarterback at Penn State, Drew Allen, look a lot better
than he actually is, just because he made so many
terrific plays.
Speaker 5 (01:32:51):
He also can be a blocker glance scrimmage.
Speaker 14 (01:32:53):
There's a couple of tight ends in this class that
I like, and some interior offensive lineman.
Speaker 5 (01:32:57):
As you said to me, that's the strength of this class.
So I think it.
Speaker 14 (01:33:00):
Actually we've talked, you know, and I've complained so much
about the class of twenty twenty five. It just lacks
skill quarterback. I would argue wide receiver is also lacking.
But along the offensive and defensive lines, I think it's
pretty solid. And again considering the fact that the Seahawks
struggled most along the line of scrimmage, I really do
(01:33:20):
think that this is a draft class that Seattle should
be able to take advantage of. And with the at
least speculation at this point that Seattle is going to
be gaining three compensatory picks, that's the most that John
Schneider has had in five years, I do think that
this is a draft class that Seatle should be able
to really fortify up front.
Speaker 8 (01:33:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:33:40):
I think you mentioned at one point when of your
mock drafts that Josh Simmons, the offensive lineman from Ohio State,
makes sense for Seattle.
Speaker 5 (01:33:46):
Yep, I think so.
Speaker 14 (01:33:46):
I mean, he's a left tackle that had previously played
at San Diego State, and so he played at one
level and an entirely different scheme goes to Ohio State.
Chip Kelly of course is calling the plays with the
buck guys in very different scheme. Played both positions left
and right tackle. He's six foot six He's three hundred
and fifteen pounds. He's just really light on his feet.
(01:34:07):
He is a classic tackle. Now, I think he's powerful
enough to be able to slide inside to play guard.
But to me, the reason why I was forecasting this pick,
and we know John Scheider has already talked about his
level of disdain for taking interior offensive line, especially guards,
you know, in early around selections or paying them big
type of money. So take a tackle and maybe be
(01:34:28):
able to push a Lucas and you can kind of
protect his leg a little bit if you move him inside.
Or again, if you do have any reservations by Abraham
Lucas's health or Charles Cross's long term viability for the Seahawks,
then I think if you take a player like a
Josh Simmons, you are making your offensive line that much better. Certainly,
there's some plug and play guards. Tyler Stein from Alabama's
(01:34:51):
probably the only interior offensive lineman at this point in
my tape I've watched that. I feel like that is
a plug and play guard. He played guard at college.
He can play guard in a first round caliber uh,
you know, right out of the box, so to speak.
And obviously Seawle's going to have all kinds of connections
with the University of Alabama program, so to me.
Speaker 5 (01:35:10):
He would make some sense as well.
Speaker 14 (01:35:11):
But otherwise I think again, if you go with the
best player available philosophy that Josh are always has done,
a tight end like a Tyler Warren, edge rusher, like
a Jack Sawyer, you know, those would make it nearly
as much sense in my opinion as say an interior
offensive lineman, even though interior offensive line feels like the
biggest area concern for for us as Seahawk followers. Inside
(01:35:32):
that building, they put a bigger priority on offs, the tackles,
edge rushers and tight ends overguards.
Speaker 1 (01:35:38):
And yeah, and Rob's been been I will just say
Rob has been working and talking to the scouts in
that organization in that building for a long time. So
when he tells you that that's what it's all about,
all right, final thing, I just this has been a
fun year. It's always fun talking college football, and as
especially as it relates to the draft and the Seahawks
every Friday kind of a unique segment we've done for
(01:35:58):
a long time. I appreciate it. We will give you
a few weeks off when we do come back in March.
We'll go and this is what we've always done. We'll
kind of go each position group, you know, by the
by the weeks leading up to the draft, and kind
of get Rob's thoughts on all on guys that we
can you know that we can discuss and talk about
just a real quick thought on the quarterback position, because
(01:36:19):
it's it's those two that we talked about, Shador Sanders
and cam Ward. When will the next quarterbacks be taken?
That's the fascinating conversation.
Speaker 14 (01:36:29):
I do think that gentleman Row from Alabama, as much
as his inconsistency will drive people crazy, I also think
that his athletic upside is going to just generate so.
Speaker 5 (01:36:41):
Much excitement that some team is going to be willing
to roll the dice.
Speaker 14 (01:36:45):
As you said, and I certainly appreciate the kind words
you know, not only just the fact that you and
I have been working together as long as we have,
but I I do, uh, you know, have conversations with
some of the scouts inside the sales building and scouts
all over the NFL well, and I can tell you
that there is awful excitement about Jill Monroe.
Speaker 5 (01:37:04):
They just feel like his.
Speaker 14 (01:37:05):
Upside is absolutely through the roof, and so he's a
very different type of a player than say, at Jordan Love.
But I was not real high on Jordan Love, and
of course he wound up being a first round pick,
and you know, kudos to him and the Green Bay
Packers for his development. You know, Patrick Mahomes was not
expected to be what Patrick.
Speaker 5 (01:37:22):
Mahomes has become.
Speaker 14 (01:37:23):
So again, I think that there's going to be a
team somewhere in the you know, fifteen to twenty five
ish range, see all of the eighteen that might be
willing to roll the dice on Jayalen Monroe. As far
as other quarterbacks, we haven't talked about, but I'm looking
forward to kind of breaking down a little bit more.
Kyle McCord from Syracuse, we talked a little bit about
the quarterbacks, of.
Speaker 5 (01:37:44):
Course, the Notre Dame and Ohio State, some of the
other big time programs out there.
Speaker 14 (01:37:48):
There are some interesting guys more in the middle rounds.
But as far as who's going to be quarterbacks three
after Shador and after Cam, I do expect it to
be Jill Monroe quite possibly in the first round, if
not the first round, from the top of the second round,
similar to what Will Levis did with the Tennessee Titans
a couple.
Speaker 5 (01:38:04):
Of years back.
Speaker 1 (01:38:05):
My friend will give you a few weeks off. I
know you're completing your move down there in the South Sound,
get the boxes unpacked and all that, and by the
time that happens, we'll be ringing you up.
Speaker 5 (01:38:13):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:38:14):
That's also Rob barring any unforeseen things that could happen
between now and then. So if that does happen, we
may call you earlier, but in the meantime we'll give
you a week or two off.
Speaker 5 (01:38:21):
All right, much appreciate it, sir. Anytime you knowed anything,
you know me, I'm a phone call away.
Speaker 1 (01:38:27):
I appreciate that. Rob rang Bright to by Farelli's Pizza
