Speaker 2 (00:14):
I feel like we're running around today a little bit, Yes,
a little bit. That's right, we're a vak. We'll get
to her in a second. All right, lots going on.
First of all, let's just talk about the good news.
Cracking with a win yesterday, big win. We'll get to
that a little bit.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
I mean the first sing there, first segment, cracking. Here
we go.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
But well, it's a football Friday. We'll get a lot
of football. Okay, what happened in baseball yesterday, Andrews refreshed
my memory.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
The Dodgers won. They took a two to three to
one series. And what happened to the other game and
the Cleveland Guardians walked off? Then you are as much
as I'm rooting against the Guardians. But that was a
cool walk office for their fans. That was awesome.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Seahawks are heading down to atl Atlanta, Hotlanta on Sunday
ten o'clock on Fox thirteen. We'll have an injury report
here in the next hour or so, the first one.
The second one will come out about two o'clock. We'll
see who's in, who's out, what's going on there. We'll
break it all down with Greg Cosel at one o'clock today.
Tony Bennett form for w wasthing his state basketball coach
who took the Koogs to two straight NCAA tournaments before
(01:16):
going on to sixteen years at Virginia and winning a
national championship there. Multiple time National Coach of the Year
future Natesmith Hall of Famer step down yesterday. We told
you about that. He had his news conference today. The
easy answer is to why n I and EL did
he say that? In not so many words, but he did,
(01:36):
current state of college basketball is not something I want
to be part of.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Huh what what he means it?
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Could you translate that for me? Let's get to the show.
That's part of.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Alrighty, here we go. It's a football Friday. No Huskies
this weekend, so the Hawks get the weekend off. You're
a Husky fan to get the weekend off. Your second
favorite show has the weekend. I know, well it's only
my second favorite show. And they lose, which has happened
a few times this year. It's been good, but we
have Cougars are playing Hawaii at tomorrow at twelve thirty
on the CW. They're trying to continue their little run.
(02:36):
They got a chance to have a good season, like
crazy good season wins and losses. Well that's coming up
this weekend. Cracking our back at home tomorrow taking on Calgary.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Al Gary the Flames.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
We've got baseball going on this weekend, some really good
college football, which we will talk about with Rob rang
at two o'clock today. Seahawks in Atlanta for a key
matchup against the Fouls week for really big week. We're
gonna we're gonna do. We're flipping some things around. First
of all, didn't I just say the Kooks play at
(03:09):
twelve thirty tomorrow. Yeah, okay, so I'm just doing some
math here. Twelve thirty tomorrow, if we fly to Pullman,
it's about a fifty minute flight. Yeah, yes, via Horizon.
It's at home, right, it's at home.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah. Jess was pissed about that because, like the one
chance we get to go to Hawaii and they've come
to Pullman, like, not that Pullman's gone.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
How long would she have been gone if that was
the case. Yeah, I mean a week and a half.
It's a fifty minute flight and she's gone today. Huh,
it's just you and me, buddy, it's just you and me.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Hey, I'm fine with that.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Hey, but I got us one.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
We miss her, but I'm yeah, that's that's my favorite
part about it. Ian doesn't bring in Jimmy John's for
when it's all three of us, but when it's just
him and.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I, I was hungry. I had I had that, you know,
I had that. I had that day. Today, as we
continue the the restoration renovation after the mass of the
flood of two thousand and.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Two on four updates on that today, we got.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
To go look at carpet and flooring. That was fun.
At one point my wife looked at me and goes,
you really don't want to be here, do you?
Speaker 3 (04:10):
No, she knows you too.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Oh I don't. Don't you care what it looks like?
Not really? Nope, I want to fix No, not really, No,
I want it. I want it bright. I wanted this,
and I said, I want it to look how you
want it to look. That's exactly, that's how I want
it to look. Yes, and the cheapest flooring and carpeting
we can find. Since all insurance companies are shysters and crooks,
(04:34):
oh yes they are, yeh crooks many gods.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
A whole conversation.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah, it's a whole different conversation. I'm going to air
these guys out at some point. Right now, I'll wait.
I'll wait till I see a check, and then once
I see the check, when it's not worth I'm gonna
we'll air those people out. God. Yeah, Actually, you know
what it is. It's the guy that comes and does it.
His whole job is not to help you, the client.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
To make it as cheap as possible for that.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yes, yes, yeah, you're really a sorry individual if that's
your job, like to screw people over. Yeah, it's like
you're really a sorry sorry individual. But anyway, we move on.
But yeah, we've got we're gonna do at twelve twenty.
Today we're gonna revisit an old friend on the radio station.
Speaker 5 (05:20):
Now.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
In fairness, I did a little horse trading here, all right.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Deal with the Devil's John Well, no, he's not the devil.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
He's in front of mine. But it's yeah, it's it's
the world that we live in now. But John Canzono's
going to join us. I traded to Canzano for lun trade.
Do you like that?
Speaker 3 (05:36):
I like that?
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Do you like that?
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Drunk screw guy?
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Anyway, we're gonna talk to Kenzono. He talked to Mark
fu yesterday at the WCC Media Day about what's going
on with the future of the PAC twelve and you're like,
wait a second, Mark Few, memory, Mark Few, and then
Gonzaga going on to PA a couple of years. Yep,
this comes on the heels of what's going I'm now
with Tony Bennett. He had his news conference today and
(06:03):
in not so many words, he basically said, I just
don't want a part of this anymore. And we've seen
that it's interesting with college basketball, we've seen it more. Yes,
Jay Wright left Villanova and said, I'm done. I've won
a championship, I've done everything I can do. I'm in
the Hall of Fame. I don't need this. Nick Saban
walked away from Alabama for the exact same reason. I mean, look,
(06:24):
how happy in jovial that guy. I mean, who would
have seen that coming?
Speaker 6 (06:28):
Right?
Speaker 5 (06:30):
You know?
Speaker 2 (06:30):
I think there's no doubt Urban Meyer is one of
the worst human beings in all of sports that's hired
by Fox. But there's a reason he's not going back
to coaching because he can't coach in the NFL. That
wasn't what he was cut out. But he can coach
in college. Like his track record tells you that he
wants no part of it, why would he the world
(06:51):
that we live in now, with the nil world and
the portal world, it's trickled down to the coaches. I
had a friend of mine today tell me this, and
I think it's a great It's a great way to
look at it. The portal and nil you know what
is it has created this. It has created this this
thing now where it's just easy to quit and walk
(07:13):
away if you don't like something. And I'm not criticizing Tony,
I will criticize him for something in a second. But
and I know I got to know him quite a
bit when we did a bunch of We were on
a bus together a feud for a couple of weekends
and a couple of years in a row doing fundraising
for Washington State Kugar Athletic Fund. When he first was hired.
I really liked the guy. We had some great time.
(07:34):
I like him. I don't know him well anymore of
those fifteen years ago, but I really like the guy.
I do believe he's got like what he taught talks
about in terms of his family and his faith. He
very much believes all those things. But I don't like
the fact that he walked away this close to the
season starting. There is a president. His dad did it too,
three games into his final year at Wisconsin Green Bay,
(07:56):
took a few years off, came back and coached at Wazoo,
and then set it up for Tony. But so I
don't like leaving the kids there that are there right now,
high and drive. But that is also the world we
live in. As my buddy pointed out, like if you
don't like things in the world of nil and portal
player or coach you just quit, you walk away. Now,
I'm also really jealous of Tony Bennett because how nice
(08:21):
would it be to be so secure in what you've
accomplished in your career and more importantly, make no mistake
about it financially, where you could just say, yeah, my
heart's not in it and I'm walking away, I'm done.
Not many people can do that.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
He did.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
He's created that for himself. And you know what, if
you do create that for yourself, good for you. You
walk away. But it's I think it's a red flag
a little bit for for for sports, for college athletics
that a guy that you know, he can't he can't
have the success he used to because he was his
His programs were built on recruiting non NBA players for
(08:59):
the most part, few NBA players, but really for the
most part, not NBA players, and they would develop over
the course.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Of three or four years, right veterans.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
Yeah, you can't do that in college bath, in college
sports anymore. Football, BA, college basketball, especially college basketball, it
is built for a different part. You know, maybe it's
built for a guy like David Riley. We're gonna talk
to him at one thirty today. Was he was head coach. Yeah,
young guy, just different, different vibe. Maybe it's built for him.
I don't know, but it's too bad because Tony Bennett's
(09:27):
good for college basketball and he walked away for those reasons.
And I think we're going to see more and more
people do that as well. Seahawks and Atlanta real quick
before we get to Kanzono Seahawks in Atlanta Sunday, Greg
co Sale is gonna jump on with us at one o'clock,
his normal visit. We'll have a little idea. Maybe what
the what the injury report looks like is Jason Peter
is gonna be your right tackle on Sunday. Can't be
worse than Forsyth, who's been out with doesn't sound like
(09:50):
he's playing. He's got the hand injury, so I kind
of think is.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Now if he is playing right?
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Yeah, usually who.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Would you play Peters or Drell.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
I'd have them both active and I'd probably start Peters yeah, yeah,
and see how it goes. Yeah, and maybe I hate this.
I mean I'm hating it in the right guard, but
maybe i'd rotate him. Yeah, this is this different situation.
Could be a soft landing for Darrell because they're awful yeah,
pass rushing wise, and they're awful up front.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
I think there's something there, honestly.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Well, if there wasn't something there, they would have cut him.
Speaker 6 (10:23):
Yeah, like.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
They would have. They would have if there wasn't something there.
And they weren't worried because we all stress about this
every training camp. Oh my god, you can't, you can't
cut him, he's gonna get climed off waivers. Well, there's
like fifteen hundred guys on waivers at the cutdown day,
Like nobody did. You have to be special to be
really worried about that, And they were worried about that. Yeah,
you know, he showed enough in you know, training camp
(10:49):
or joint practice with Tennessee whatever it would have been
preseason games that they Yeah. So I think there is
something there for sure. But that's ah, like the jump.
It's one thing if you're a skill player, I think
you're playing offensive line at a tackle position and you're
going from D two to the NFL. My kid plays
D three as a tackle. He's they they played D
(11:10):
two teams every year right in non conference. That ain't
the NFL. No, that jump is massive, So I understand
why the soft landing, But Yeah, I mean I kind
of want to see him play.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Right.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Two, let's Canzono rang it to Kenzono? Coming up Cosell
at one o'clock, David Riley at one thirty. We'll have
some fun with the Daily Power Play as well. All
A nine three point three KDFM. Now back to the

Hey don't miss Seattle International Auto Show presented by b
ECU Compare Gas Power Hybrid and eb all under one roof,
see him touch and drive. I'm living Field of End Center,
November fourteenth through the seventeenth. Discover your drift Seattle Autoshow
dot com. Normally Dani O'Neil joins us in this particular segment.
Danny's uh, he's actually in Europe. When he is here,
he's brought to by the Northwest Handling Systems from forklifts
(12:11):
to pallet racks, conveyors, the loading doc equipment. If you sell,
rent and service all your warehousing needs, request a quote
today or at NWHS dot com, or give him a
call at four two five two five five zero five
one hundred. So Daniel return next week. All right, So
we did a little did some stuff, moved some stuff
around because I want to talk to this guy. I
want to talk to him for a while now about
(12:32):
a number of different topics. I do listen to him
elsewhere every week, but uh, and he does a show
every day in Portland as well, which I think you
can listen to on a podcast out of Portland, Oregon.
But uh, you know, I feel like John Kanzano I
should have a little bit more of a stake in
the John Kanzano real estate market. Considering your first ever
(12:53):
radio show in Portland, your co host was who again,
let me think you were there?
Speaker 7 (12:58):
You were there, man, doesn't have happened without you. When
I when I get the gold Jacket and Canton, You'll
be there with me. Okay.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
You know what I like to I'd like to think
of myself as a star maker, you know, like I
worked in Portland with you before you were actually a
radio and multimedia star that you are now. You were
the columnist at the ore Going and we both got
there like the say, like the same month, I think
in two thousand and two. If I'm not mistaken sounds right, Yeah,
and then see who else Chris Haynes never had done
(13:27):
any media on air before he worked with US at
Comcast Sports Net. Now he's a big deal in the
NBA circles. Brooke Olsendam was there somebody named Russini? This
what the athletic now was on TV with us down there,
I Andres you got a big future ahead of you, buddy.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Thanks.
Speaker 7 (13:43):
You know every buddy touches.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
I don't, but you guys do. How you been?
Speaker 4 (13:50):
Man?
Speaker 7 (13:50):
I'm well, I just got back from like eighteen hours
in Vegas, and you know how, you know how there's
there's a there's this such a thing as spending too
much time in Vegas. Yeah, there's also such a thing
as spending too little time in Vegas. I had one
of those two little time things. It's almost exhausting because
you just get there. You know, you sleep, you wake up,
you work all day, you fly right out, and everybody
(14:13):
else looks like they had a hell of a time
over a few days in Vegas, and you've been there
eighteen hours.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
I got to get to that, and I'm gonna get
to that in a second, because when we have we
had dueling Basketball Media days between basically the Halffields of
the McCoy's right, the Mountain West Conference and I say
the West Coast Conference, but I think Stuve Jackson the
WCC they were just kind of innocent bystanders because it
was more of the Mountain West Conference and the soon
(14:39):
to be a new PAC twelve. We'll get to that
in a second. I do want to I want to
hit on this Oregon Ohio State what you'll be shocked
to know a lot of people up here are upset
because they think that the Ducks might have cheated last weekend,
and maybe the NCAA agreed because they ended up changing
the rule. What was your take on the Dan Lanning move?
I liked it personally at the end of that game
(15:00):
to win the game against Oiho State.
Speaker 7 (15:01):
Well, I thought at first I saw it in real
time and it didn't It didn't really occur to me
that they were doing anything because I saw the way
that the you know, the twelfth man walked onto the
field and they got the penalty, and who in their
right minds getting a penalty there with ten seconds to go?
But later I thought, gosh, did they trade for five
yards for four seconds? Like that, that's not a bad
trade if you think about it. And and you know,
(15:23):
Ohio State early in the game, Oregon has this apparent
interception on the very first series of the game, and
Chip Kelly and Ohio State rushed to the line of
scrimmage and run a play before Oregon can get a
time out and have it, you know, get a chance
to get eyes on it or maybe get a review.
It's a little bit of gamesmanship going on. And so
I sort of viewed it as if there was a
(15:43):
loophole in the interpretation of the rule. If you know,
is it hack a shack? Is it you know, taking
a five yard penalty so you can get a better
angle for the goalpost. I mean, I think it's a
wonderful radio discussion, but it technically was an available option
for Oregon, and Oregon took that option. And I don't
see it the same as faking an injury. I think
the faking injury thing is, you know, that's bad sportsmanship.
(16:06):
I don't think anybody should be doing that, but I
you know, it's one of the options that was available
to Oregon. The coaching STAF huddles during the time out
and they decide this is what we're gonna do. And
now the nc DOUBLEA moves very quickly, I think because
Ohio State was involved to close that loophole, and how
the coaches are all going, Hey, they did that in
our game like seven years ago, or another team did
it to somebody else, or Buddy Ryan invented it, but
(16:29):
now that it's happened to Ohio State, you gotta fix it.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
If it would have been Rick Newheisl's on our show
every week on our station every week with actually a
couple of different shows. He mentioned this yesterday, and I
would tend to agree if that would have been Fresno
State and Boise State, and Boise State's playing for a
chance to play in the playoffs. Still, right, they could
be the top group of five team right. I don't
think this rule. I don't think the NCUBA cares, do they.
Speaker 7 (16:51):
I talked to somebody at the nc DOUBLEA on Monday
and Tuesday and was told that, you know, hey, this
is a great example of why we moved, you know,
worst able to move quickly, like you know, we're a
real flexible and mercurial organization. And I was just like
when when Ohio State's involved, Sure, but part of it
is the profile. There were ten million people watching that game.
(17:13):
But you can't help but think like if Ohio State
was calling the timeout and Washington State or Washington or
Oregon or Oregon State or on the other side of
that equation. I don't think they're moving that fast to
fix it.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
No, no, no, this is a Ryan Day rule. All right,
let me just one more football thing before I get
to the craziness. It was Vegas.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
I get.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
I'm just reading your column. It's just nuts. What was
going on there in your conversation with and people can
read it at the ball Fight at john Kinzono dot
com in terms of the conversation with Mark Feugh. But Oregon,
it feels like more than anybody else has been able
to make the transition from old Pac twelve to the
new conference. And I even include some of the Big
(17:55):
twelve teams. And I know you Tuy's got an issue
with the quarterback play and stuff. Arizona is what it is,
Arizon Estate looks okay, But it feels like Oregon's made
that transition. Is that the case or is the sample
sized still too small?
Speaker 7 (18:07):
One hundred percent? This this market, this time transfer portal,
Nil it it is veered into Organ's wheelhouse and in
a space where Oregon has been towing the line for
years with recruiting and uniforms and the Nike influence and
marketing and you know, comic books and you know, they
had the they had a bunch of marketing things that
(18:28):
the NCAA said, no, you can't do a comic book,
you can't do this. Oregon was always pushing it. Now
with the guardrails down, Oregon is better positioned than anybody.
They've got this nil collective that you know, the the
Boulevard collective at SMU has got a bunch of money.
It's got like a bunch of boss hogs that have
petroleum money that are just down there going. You know,
we're right the check, you know. But they told me
(18:49):
the Boulevard said, hey, second to the Division. We're second
to Division Street. Like they know, it's not even a
question that they're behind Division Street. And so Oregon's got
all these inherent advantages in this world world that is,
you know, well suited for them. And there's no speed
limit on the freeway and Oregon has got a ride
right now. But look, there have been programs historically in
the SEC and other places that have had those kinds
(19:11):
of advantages and feasted on it. And so I think
Oregon is an example of, you know, being well positioned
at a time in which the game kind of came
back their way.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
John Canzono Johncanzono dot Com joining us, by the way,
go subscribe support some local journalism, even if it's out
of Portland. He's a Northwest guy, He's a West Coast guy.
Go subscribe right now. So nobody does a better job
of painting a picture to set a scene than you do.
With the first part of your column. I was, I
kind of it took me a second to realize this
(19:42):
yesterday when I saw it happening. We interviewed a couple
of guys. We had Isaiah wattson yesterday from Wazoo. We've
got David Riley on coming up at one thirty today.
I was thinking, Oh, it's cool. The wcc's down there.
Oh wait, so is the Mountain West Conference and the
you know, the PAC twelve teams that are going to
be moving and all this kind of stuff. Walk our
listeners through the dynamics of what was going on in
(20:05):
Vegas yesterday for Dueling media days for basketball.
Speaker 7 (20:09):
So the Mountain West and West Coast Conference came up
with this idea. They said, look, we both want to
do media day in Vegas, Well why not do it together.
We can draw more media that way, we can make
this a bigger event. That way cool. It's before anybody
knew that the PAC twelve was going to take you know,
the four Mountain West Conference schools and then a fifth.
(20:30):
It's before anybody knew that Gonzaga was going to leave
the West Coast Conference, that there'd be all this back
and forth lawsuits filed between the Mountain West and the
PAC twelve, and so, you know, when I saw the
event happening, I was like, I first viewed it as, oh,
it's a chance for me to go talk to Mark Few,
and so I reached out to the WCC and Gonzaga
and said, look, if I come to this event, can
(20:50):
I get like twenty minutes with Few? And they were
like absolutely, And then I kind of ian. I looked
at it and I was like, wait a minute, are
they doing it like in the same room, like all
of these things. And then I started thinking like, as
it approached, it's three conferences, it's the Mountain West, the WCC.
It's the future of the PAC twelve, it's the current
(21:11):
of the PAC twelve. It's just a lot of tension
in one place. And the interesting thing to me was like,
as I walk into the room, is like I'm watching
San Diego State's coach walk by me with his players. There's,
you know, Boise States coach with his players. Here's few
over on the other side here, you know, here is
(21:31):
Gloria navara is the Mountain West commissioner, Stu Jackson, the
WCC commissioner. And I was like, oh my gosh, Like
this is like a forum of realignment palooza with a
lot of tentacles to it. And so it was just
really interesting to have these candid conversations kind of off
to the side with Mark Feu and then Stu Jackson.
(21:55):
I talked to Gloria Navarres in greater depth at the
airport as she was trying to get through TSA at
the airport. I get this great scene in the column
today where she's passing through airport security and she gets
randomly selected for additional screening. Now there's a lot of
questions about whether not the Mountain West would go after
Grand Canyon or Saint Mary's or maybe both now to
try to copy the Pac twelve's basketball move. And so
(22:16):
this TSA officer is waving a wand on Gloria, giving
her the extra you know, additional screening, and University of
Portland men's coach Chantae Lagan's walks by. He comes through security.
He looks over and he says, check her pockets and
see if she has any of our teams in there.
And you know, Gloria heard it. She just a big
smile on her face and nods, and I just started
(22:37):
laughing because it's just this really surreal scene with a
lot of tension. None of these conferences invented realignment. They're
all stuck having to deal with it out of survival.
There's a lot of anxiety. Of course, bad feelings. You know,
Gloria in the Mountain West and Teresa Gould, the PAC
twelve commissioner, they were friends. Gloria was her protege. And
(23:00):
I asked du Jackson, I said, how do you think
that's going now? He goes, they're not friends. Now, you
know it's it's there's some bad feelings there. And then
admit it. You got Mark Few, who I thought really
got worn down by probably two or three hours of
talking basketball, and by the time he got to me,
he sat down. I said, we're gonna have a much
different conversation. He said, good. It was very conversational, and
he started talking about Tony Bennett retiring. He started talking
(23:23):
about Gonzaga finally getting a full share in the validation
it always desperately wanted. He started talking about how going
to the PAC twelve might cause some other schools to
maybe consider going to the PAC twelve. You know, is
this the first domino to fall? It was just it
was a wild scene in Vegas, and you know, it
was it was almost like a sitcom. You know, it
(23:45):
was like Modern Family or The Office at times. And
so I just thought it was a really interesting dynamic.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
What in mark in just in general terms, why, because
there's no way Gonzaga goes and joins the pawer. There's
no way they do that. And all due respect to
every other sport, which I think is, by the way,
is the best thing that's happened in realignment is now
Gonzaga has a rival for their non revenue sports sixty
(24:14):
five miles away. Thank god. I mean, it's just it
makes all the sense in the world, but nobody cares
what the soccer or the baseball coach think. This had
to be a mark for you had to sign off
on this. Why do you think he did.
Speaker 7 (24:24):
Yeah, he told me he was in on the discussions.
He said, you know, at a lot of schools, it
wouldn't be the head men's basketball coach in on these conversations.
And he was one of the you know, he and
the athletic director and the university president are having these
conversations with brett or Mark and having these conversations. He
told me with George Kliofkoff before you know, the conference
imploded and they were a ten member conference and even
(24:47):
had conversations in the past with Larry Scott of the
Pac twelve and nothing ever materialized. And I you know,
if you told me that he felt like Gonzaga basketball
for a long time was like a salesman on one
hundred commission. That's the point he made that they had
to work and work and work instead of enjoying the
fruits of their success and their labor, they just continued
(25:10):
every day to have to wake up in order to eat.
And he said, it's how we survived. It's we had
to go make our sales, and he said, We'll just
keep doing what we do. And I but my question
to him was like, if you've done that for generations
or decades, how do you shape change your mindset? And
he goes, we probably don't. We probably still stay hungry.
But I think it positions Gonzaga for whatever comes next,
(25:34):
and it may help position the Pac twelve to find
something in basketball that the SEC and the Big Ten
haven't yet figured out, right because there's not enough money
there yet for it. But you know, the hope is
I think from Gonzaga's standpoint is they're part of whatever's
coming next from a basketball standpoint, and certainly their brand
has it changed the conversation for the Pac twelve Nationally.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
It is for Gonzaga the Honey. They get a different share, correct, Like,
they get a different share than everybody else in this conference.
So I mean monetarily for basketball at least, it makes
all the sense in the world, right because they join
a bigger conference with bigger brands, and oh, by the way,
San Diego State, Boise State, Utah State, those basketball brands
are the most important brands for the Mountain West. They
(26:18):
get a bigger share, right, So this is a better
deal for them all the way around. Yes, they get
a full share.
Speaker 7 (26:23):
They get a share as if you know they had
a football program in a lot of ways. You know
you know this, I mean, and your listeners know this.
Gonzaga was after some validation too, and it was a
validating move by the PAC twelve for Teresa Gould to
fly to Spokane sit down with few. She met with him.
He said, she's super smart. She sold him on the
(26:46):
idea that if Gonzaga joined the Fray, that suddenly it
opened the door for others to come in. And I
thought I found that very interesting. He kind of cut
off the conversation after that. You can tell that I
think they're up to so something with the next move
whatever that is School number eight or school number eight
and nine that is tied maybe directly to getting Gonzaga
(27:09):
into the Fold. But they are I think sitting in
a position where they have a full share. They got
the validation that they had long wanted. The travel works
for Gonzaga and this basketball conference. I mean, six of
the eight schools that are in the Fold right now
were NCAA tournament teams last year. And you got San
Diego State and Gonzaga at the front of the line.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
I believe.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
I just I saw something. I think Gonzaga like sixty
four thousand active alums for Gonzaga, and the vast majority
live not just in the state of Washington, but on
the West side of Washington. Like they have this, they
have a potential to sell a Seattle TV market for
both WSU and for Gonzaga for basketball.
Speaker 7 (27:48):
Yeah, and that's huge, Like that was massive. There was
just a lot of and you know, you're gonna talk
to David Riley, like he was asked about it, you
know a few times. I asked him, how does it
change recruiting to you know, be able to say, hey,
this is where we're gonna be two years from now.
And he really tried to steer it back to hey,
I'm really focused on the last five or six months
and what is happening right now with my program. But
how do you not think about, you know, for years
(28:11):
it you know, I wanted to see Oregon plague on
Zaga regularly. I wanted to see, you know, this is
a regional thing, and of course Gonzag is a blue
blood and it can it can get games with anybody
in the country and you're gonna see that, I think
in the PAC twelve's media rights situation. But you know,
to have that geography of somebody that close who creates
a basketball rivalry, I mean, that's it's just gonna be
(28:33):
fun to see these teams play.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
John Kenzono, before I let you go, what do you
think is next? Is it just a waiting game now?
And there's no hurry for the PAC twelve to go
ahead and add that eighth football member, And like, what
makes sense do you think for them?
Speaker 7 (28:47):
Well? I keep coming back like eight is what they
need minimally, but they really need nine from a scheduling
standpoint in football, it just makes more sense to have nine.
So keep that in the back of your mind. Eight
eight to survive, nine to thrive. And I you know,
I'm told that they you know, they went into that
late last week trying to hire the media consultant that
(29:07):
they're going to use and negotiate their rights. I'm told
they're very close on that. I was told by a
source this morning they're very close to locking in that
media consultant who will help them do that deal. And
what they're going to do is they're going to go
to the media companies and they're going to say, Okay,
model this as a eight team conference, including the addition
of UNLV, model it including UNLV and Nevada, model it
(29:28):
including Memphis and two Lane or just Memphis or just
two Lane. And I think they may even include some
models for some potential power force schools, maybe somebody in
the Big twelve who might be restless. I don't know.
I mean, there are a lot of hypotheticals, and you know,
it doesn't mean true.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
Is it true Arizona? Are you hearing anything about Arizona State?
Not happy?
Speaker 7 (29:48):
I'm not hearing that. But I wouldn't be surprised by
anything right now because of you know. But the question is,
Here's the other thing people need to remember is a
lot of people are There's just two There's two revenue
streams at these schools are are interested in. One is
the media rights deal with their respective conference. Two is
the CFP distributions. Keep in mind that the distributions followed
(30:11):
the schools, not the conferences. So if you know, let's
just say, hypothetically, if cal said, Okay, we want to
come back on zagaz In, we want to come back,
and we'll pay the exit fee in the in the
ACC and gosh, they were only getting ten million a
year in distributions. They're getting a minimal distribution. You know,
their ACC CFP distribution moves with them, So they're getting
(30:32):
they would bring thirteen million dollars in revenue. It moves
with them. And so you know, if Oregon State or
Washington State had just joined the Big twelve, their three
point six million dollar distribution for the CFP would have
moved with them. That was built in by the SEC
and the Big ten mostly because they expected and anticipated
there would be more realignment and they didn't want more
(30:53):
mouths to feed, and they didn't want to have to
divide the money up anymore give anybody any more money,
so they just sort of locked that number in. So
I don't know, you know, if I'm the PAC twelve,
I'm modeling a number of scenarios and I'm talking to
media companies. You know, Utah is sitting out there as well.
Ian Utah has no exit fee in the Big twelve.
(31:13):
They negotiated that, and so they're sitting out there. You know,
I'm not gonna jump to the conclusion because I think
Utah ultimately would love to be in the big ten.
But they're sitting out there and you know, are you
telling me maybe is there a media company that would go, hey, look,
we'll bush you a X number of dollars if you
can include Utah and the return of Cow. I don't know,
(31:36):
so I'm just spitballing here. I think there are a
lot of things on the table. I think they're gonna
let the media companies sort of decide where there's offers
are coming from. Next. But eight schools to survive nine
if you want to schedule well for football.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
Nobody covers this better than you, man, nobody period. End
of story. Johncanzono dot com, Go subscribe, this guy does it.
I mean, it's and it's. It feels like it changes
every day, Like it feels like it just it feels
like it changes every day. It's like, yeah, there's a
canzon on, wonder what he's got today? Oh, how about that?
How about that? Like dropping a little Utah nugget on
us and stuff as well? And well, by the way,
(32:11):
Tony Bennett said, I don't like nil. I just quit.
I'm done. I mean, what a world we're living in
right now, John, What a world we're living in? Right
now with college Athletics. So yeah, it's it's wild Johncanzono
dot com. Go check it out, go subscribe, support him,
have a great show later today, and I appreciate you
coming on today. Man, thank you. That is John Canzono
joining us here. Man, that's a there's a lot of
meat on that bone cracking. Speaking of meat on the bone,
(32:33):
hell of a win last night. We'll get to that.
We've got some Seahawks Atlanta Falcons preview coming up one
o'clock with Cosell. All on a Washington State Beef Commission
Football Friday ninety three point three KJFM.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Now back to the Washington State Beef Commissions Football Friday
with the Infernets on your home for the NFL Sports
Radio ninety.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Three point three KJR. All Right, we do have a
Seahawk injury update report. Rather, it's the first of two
we'll get today.
Speaker 6 (33:09):
I do believe.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
The game status. Trey Brown out, requel and out Jerrick Reid.
We barely knew you out. So yeah, you're down, You're
you're you're digging deep on the injury list for the
cornerback position. Remember, already Burns was placed on the injured
list yesterday Rashaon Jenkins as well at the safety position.
(33:33):
So Brown and Woolen for sure out. Stone Forsyth is out,
so we'll expect a corresponding move probably later in the day.
Fourth option for right tackle. God, that's just that's insane wild.
I mean, that is just it to think you've got
to go four deep on your right tackle position. But
(33:54):
this is also the team that it probably matters.
Speaker 3 (33:58):
Little right hopefully.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
I mean, they're the worst. It's the worst pass rush
in the NFL statistically and realistically it's the worst. We'll
talk about that with Cosell here in a few minutes time.
But yeah, I mean, I got to think it's Jason Peters,
maybe it's Durell, but no matter it's they're they're not good.
Atlanta isn't the over has got to be the bet.
(34:23):
But what do we say yesterday wasn't the over? Like
it was like eight or nine points ahead of the
average over under this week.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
In the NFL.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
I think, yeah, that must just make Mike McDonald shiver
like it must send it must drive him nuts, and listen,
a lot of it would be the fact that you
know it's a new team. He's trying to get acclimated
and all the injuries. But he's a defensive head coach.
That must just drive him nuts. The fact that that
team is is is.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
That's what he's brought in to do, right.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
He he was brought in to improve the defense. Yeah,
I mean, well, I would say it's twofold one. He
was brought in because they felt like the Pete train
had run out of rail World Railroad, like it was over.
They thought that this was a team that was ready
built to take the next step, and it still could be.
It's they're three and three. They win this week, forty
(35:11):
nine ers lose, just like that, you're back in first
place exactly. I mean, the forty Niners play the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
By the way, it's still there, it's taken, it's still
very much there.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
But yeah, he was brought in to improve the defense,
if you want to get right down to it. He
was brought into improvement.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
And that's why I that's where my concern lies for
this team. It's less than the offensive line. We knew
that was going to be a struggle going.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Yeah, and I think you can. I mean, the fact
they can't run the football. We'll talk. I'll ask go
Sell about that. I just the fact that they tried
to run the football and still couldn't. It's one thing
if you're not committed to running the ball, right, but
when you then try to commit to run the ball
and you still have I mean to say you had
little or no success is actually being kind. Their longest
(35:52):
run from scrimmage was eight yards designed run, Like that's
like for you not to pop at least one ten
twelve fourteen yard run, I mean the forty nine like seven,
like you can't that can't be the case. Real quick
to wrap up Canzano and I appreciate him jumping on
last second today it was it must have been a
(36:13):
wild scene down there. We'll hear from David Riley coming
up at one thirty today. But just the fact that
you had all the hid dueling conferences that had scheduled
this to kind of make it easier for the met
I like the fact they scheduled to make it easier
for national media and other media to cover them, Like, hey,
you can cover both West Coast conferences. That's awesome. But
then in the meantime after that got scheduled, then all
of a sudden you have this massive fallout and The
(36:36):
part that is the most interesting is the basketball side
of things. The Pac twelve got not only the only
football programs that really matter in that conference, they got
the best basketball programs and then some right San Diego
State Final four team, Utah State perennial good team Boise State.
Leon Rice always has that team hummet Yeah like lately. Yeah,
(36:59):
they they did really really well in that regard. So yeah,
for a basketball media day and all those teams are
there for the Mountain West for the second to last time,
and that must have been really cool and uncomfortable. All right,
well we come back. Our guy Great Cosell is going
to join us. We'll check in with him. Don't forget
Factor Fiction two thirty five today, your chance to win
a thousand dollars weekly prize. How do you do it? Well,
(37:20):
you'll text Factor Fiction at two thirty five not now,
and we'll give you a chance to win that money.
Coming up at two thirty five today, Cosal breaking down
Seahawks and Falcons like nobody else can.
Speaker 1 (37:29):
Next now from the Star Rentals Sports to us Jordan
ninety three point three kJ RFM Sports Headlines.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
Headlines are brought to you by Frost Brewed cores light,
choose chill on this Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday.
All right, Seahawks have announced their first of two injury reports.
Sounds like stone for scythe of them. Sound like he
is out this week. We already knew that, Trey Brown.
HOWI he's out requelling out times. We'll break it all
(38:01):
down with our man great co sale in just a
couple of minutes. Cracking winners last night. They are now
three and two, best starting franchise history by quite a bit. Actually,
like they're a better hockey team than a lot of
people thought they would be. Yes, good team. They could
score goals. That's kind of fun. They are playing again tomorrow.
They host Calgary seven o'clock at Climate Plagerina right here
on nine three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 3 (38:26):
It's funny.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
My phone just started translating that like a text message.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
You're gonna send one of those game No, I'm not
gonna do that.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
I'm not gonna do that. We got Major League Baseball scoreboard?
How is this today? Two o'clock Dodgers and Mets. Dodgers
can clinch the series with a win. Boo and Mike
Benton will be celebrating all day and all night long.
They leave that series three games to one. Later later
on tonight, Yankees and Guardians. Yankees lead that series two
(38:52):
games to one as well. Tony Bennett retired yesterday suddenly
from the University of Virginia. Ron Sanchez name the new
coach there. But I think we need to talk some football.
What do you think, I sho we do that, our
man Greg Cosel brought to you by our good friends.
It's Seattle Cider standing by.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
It's time for Egan's weekly visit with NFL Films, Greg Coso,
brought to you by Seattle Cider Company on your home
for the twelfth Man and the NFL Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
All right, here we go. It's our weekly visit with
our friend Greg co sell back. I need some normalcy
in my life, Greg co cell. I need some normalcy
and I get that with you because we're back here
on a normal Friday, getting ready for a Sunday game.
How are you doing great? How are you I'm good,
I'm very good. We're we're getting ready for the Seahawks
and the Atlanta Falcons coming up on Sunday morning for
(39:47):
US ten am Pacific time on Fox thirteen, and they'll
see a team that's that's kind of doing a lot
of good things offensively, but not defensively. Let me first
get your thoughts on Seattle. They played the forty nine ers.
It was eight for you, probably an eight to thirty
start back there. But I'm sure you caught that forty
nine or Seahawk game, right well.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
I caught it on tape. And you know, you know,
I'm an older guy and I'm into this new thing
where I go to the gym at five a m.
So I didn't I did not see the whole game
on TV.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
Oh my gosh, look at you. First of all, you're
not that old. I don't think you're any much older
than I am. But but i'll I like, I liked,
I liked it.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
We won't discuss that right now.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
I like the gym part. There's a lot of concern
here about the about a couple of things, the Seahawk
offensive line and the Mike McDonald defense, or just the
defense as a whole. Let's start on the defensive side
of the football with Seattle. We've we've now they're getting
Byra Murphy back this week, which should help. Mafe should
be healthy, which you know, get the little mini bye
week as well. There's still no new OSU. They're without
(40:47):
their starting safety in Jenkins. Sounds like Reek Wollan will
also miss the game as well, so they're a little
bit banged up. But that's the world of the NFL.
What jumps out at you with that Seattle defense right
now on tape, You know.
Speaker 4 (41:00):
It's funny defense to me. When I watched games, you know,
and I see yards being gained against the team, sometimes
it's hard to pinpoint one reason why that is. I mean,
you know you can, like, for instance, I'll give you
an example. There were two big plays against the forty
nine ers and it was basically the same play. And
(41:22):
I thought that the Seahawks made a mistake in coverage. Okay,
it was the Samuel seventy six yard touchdown and it
was the Kiddle twenty nine yard play. Okay, you know
that both those ones, I'm sure. And you know, again
without knowing how everything is taught, I mean, I thought
the Seahawks made a mistake in coverage because no defender
reacted to the rail route. That's what that route is
(41:43):
by Samuel and by Kittle and you know, so to
me that was a mistake. I don't know what was
talked about, you know, after the game or for the
couple of days after, you know, as far as rushing
the quarterback against the forty nine ers, they were alied
almost exclusively on a four man D line pass rush.
It was a coverage game for them. They played a
(42:04):
ton of zone coverage. You know, maybe because they were
missing Woolan, maybe they don't feel they can line up
and play man coverage. I think it presents some limitations
to what they can do. So, you know, I think
there's things that they're doing tactically that clearly the coaching
staff feels is the best way to play. But it
could be a function of personnel. You just mentioned a
(42:24):
bunch of players who are good players. I mean, Byron
Murphy's obviously a rookie, but I loved his tape coming
out and I think he can be a really good pro.
Woolan is he can play man to man on the outside,
and they don't really have another guy like that. You know.
The other thing is in this game, they stayed with
Witherspoon playing on the outside, and I think he's really,
(42:46):
really good playing in the nickel. You know, Burns played
the slot corner, and Burns has been with a lot
of teams. I personally don't think he's a slot corner,
but I'm not going to say I know more than
Mike McDonald. But I really like when they go to
their nickel when Witherspoon's inside. I think that's an absolute
strength of his game.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
Well, and they and Burns is now on the injured list,
so he's out, so maybe they move Witherspoon back in.
Do you see traits in the Seattle defense that reminds
you of the Baltimore defense? Personnel is different. I know
that we've talked about that a little bit. You know,
you're still depending on your personnel. But when you watch
the Mike McDonald's Seattle defense, is he trying to do
the same things is he did in Baltimore?
Speaker 4 (43:27):
To me, No, And again, I don't know every you know,
every single nuance and subtlety that they teach and coach.
But you know, I think I mentioned to you when
they signed Jenkins that I thought he could be deployed
in a similar way to the way Kyle Hamilton was
deployed with the Ravens. I'm not saying they're the exact
same player, but I think they have somewhat similar traits.
(43:51):
Hamilton probably is a better player, but I've always liked
Jenkins ever since I saw him in college. And again,
unless I'm missing something, I don't really see that in
the Seahawks defense. But that could also be a function
of the other people in the defense. Coach McDonald might think, hey,
I can't do those other things because then I don't
have someone on the back end. Because in a sense,
(44:13):
Hamilton was often used in Baltimore as a sort of
a slack corner, and while I think Jenkins can play
that role, then you need another safety. And I don't
think again, you know, everything I say is based on
film study. I don't think Wallace is good enough to
play that many snaps, and he's the next man up
(44:33):
at safety, so he might feel that, hey, I can't
put Wallace out there for twenty five or thirty snaps.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
No, exactly great Coselle joining us big thanks to Seattle
sider Roy Robertson. Harris was just picked up by Seattle
in a trade with Jacksonville.
Speaker 4 (44:48):
And it's interesting, good player.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
I was gonna ask you about it. You know what's
wild about him? He walked on the field the other
day and he looked like like, there's this body type
that they now have three guys with. And maybe it's
the three tech body type that McDonald wants. But you know,
he's six ' five ish, he's two hundred and ninety
three hundred. He if you put Leonard Williams, Mike Morris
and Roy Roberts and Harris together, they're all kind of
(45:11):
a similar defensive lineman body type, which is kind of
taller and I don't want to say lanky, but just
you know, they's still three hundred pounders, but they you know,
they're they're larger, They're they're longer, I guess, you know,
but what does he look like?
Speaker 4 (45:22):
That's why I go to the gym ian because I
don't want to become a two hundred ninety five pound
defensive tax.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
That's your fine, that's your five A M Jim's stuff.
So okay, well what do you see with this guy?
Speaker 5 (45:33):
No.
Speaker 4 (45:33):
I like Harrott, Robertson Harris. I think he's one of
those really solid rotational d tackles that can give you
twenty five thirty snaps a game and be an effective player.
You know, he's not going to play sixty snaps a game.
They didn't get him to do that. Obviously, they knew
Murphy was coming back, And I think Murphy has a
chance to be a really good player. I mean, I
don't want to sit here and say he's going to
be a star, because I don't, you know, but I
(45:54):
think his traits are such that he can be a really,
really good interior player. He just needs to play in
the NFL. So, you know, I think that was a
good move to get Roberts and Harris just gives you
another body, good rotational player. But defensively, I almost get
the feeling that Mike McDonald, and this happens a lot
on both sides of the ball with new coaches, e
(46:15):
and fans don't want to hear it because they want
their team to win right away and they think everything's
going to happen right away. You've been around long enough
to know it doesn't work that way. But I think
that Mike McDonald is probably still trying to get a
feel for how his players can play in given you know,
their assignments there, what's best for the players and how
we can maximize their traits and their abilities and sometimes
(46:37):
that takes time.
Speaker 2 (46:38):
Well, you know what, You're right, fans do want them
to win right away. They're an interesting organization and I
don't you know, I've only covered one and that would
be the Seahawks in the NFL. But I know since
I've been around it, and this goes back to the
home run days when Todd light WICKI was the president
and they had some issues at the end, they made
some moves and then they switched immediately went to eat
(47:00):
and John and I think it's a John Schneider, Jody Allen,
Paul g Allen, her wait brother before that. They do
want to win now. They'll never use the word rebuild
in that building. And they were and they were nine
to eight last season, and I think they figured this
is a guy that would take that next step, like
they would get over the hump with him. But you're right,
there's gonna be some growing pains along the way. They
just have to be and especially because the coach hasn't
(47:20):
coach these guys before.
Speaker 4 (47:22):
No, no, And you know it's funny we started and
if we could make the transition to the to the
Falcons who they're playing this Yeah, absolutely, Witherspoon and the
playing the nickel, and they're playing a team this week
in the Falcons that has the second highest percentage of
eleven personnel snaps in the NFL. They play almost ninety
percent of their offensive snaps with three wide receivers on
(47:45):
the field. And by the way, Drake London plays predominantly inside.
So you know, this is a game where you know,
I don't know what they're gonna do. You've mentioned that
Woollan's out, so I don't know what they're gonna do
with Witherspoon. But this seems to me would be a
game where I'd like to see where they're spoon inside.
But then the question is who plays outside with Brown?
Speaker 2 (48:06):
It probably is Pretch. At the rookie I would have shuged.
Speaker 4 (48:09):
Now you're dealing with a rookie on the outside with
a team, by the way, also that features a ton
of motion, and now you're dealing with, you know, a
rookie potentially if it is Pritchet and he's I think
he is the next man up, you know, So now
he has to deal with something he's not used to
seeing a lot of, and I'm sure they're giving him
a crash course, And actually that's one of the things
(48:30):
I've been thinking about just defenses as a hole in
the league because so many more teams are doing motion,
and now defenses are going to have to figure out
ways to deal with this besides the way they dealt
with it twenty years ago, because the game's changing. So
you know, they're dealing with a team ton of eleven personnel,
ton of motion, you know. So we'll see how the
Seahawks defense plays with the personnel and how they play tactically.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
Great co sale brought to you by Sales Sider. Okay,
that surprised me. I was going to ask you that
because what we've been the narrative in Seattle all week,
Greg has been Wow, the Lions, the forty nine ers,
the Giants have all run wild. New England have all
run big time against Seattle and oh, by the way,
Jean Robinson Tyson Lger are rolling into town. By the way, Yeah,
(49:13):
and which I would have thought you would have told
me maybe I'd be out of a two tight ends
set as opposed to playing at eleven personnel.
Speaker 4 (49:20):
No, almost ninety percent. But they what they their staple
run game for them is outside zone. That's what they run,
and what they have a tendency to do out of
eleven personnel is to run to the field, and that
means they're almost always running to the slot corner because
the field is usually where you have more receivers than
the boundary. So they run their outside zone run game
(49:43):
tendency wise to the field, and that forces the slot
corner to essentially be a primary run defender. So but
they're really good. That's their staple run game and they're
really good at it.
Speaker 2 (49:54):
That makes me think that Witherspoon slot for sure, and
I think we're going to see a lot more Kobe Bryant,
who was their slot corner two years ago, didn't play
much last season's kind they've moved into a safety role.
I think we might see a little bit more Kobe
Bryant this weekend against these guys.
Speaker 4 (50:10):
Yeah, Now, because he has corner ability, it's also possible
they could decide to play what we call big nickel,
would mean three safeties because they then they will have
a safety in Bryan who essentially can line up and
still match up if you have to, because he's a
corner by trade. So you could see that that could
be specific to this particular matchup. But keep in mind,
(50:32):
as I said, Drake London, I mean, he's had the
fourth most slot targets in the NFL. And I'm sure
when you watched him in the Pac twelve at USC,
as most people did, most people thought he'd be an
outside receiver with his size, his contested catchability. But he's
essentially become a slot receiver in this new offense that
the Falcons run under Zach Robinson, who came from the Rams.
Speaker 2 (50:53):
Yeah, I don't like it because Drake London is really good.
I remember the USC and he tore our teams apart
up here. He was really good. He's a good player.
I want to put those other football in a second.
Just a quick thought on Kirk Cousins. We thought this
might be a Michael Pennox game, but it's not. It's
a Kirk Cousins game.
Speaker 4 (51:08):
Well, Kirk Cousins, he just to me. And again, everybody
has their own opinion of what quarterbacks in the NFL
should look like. I don't think any coach would tell
you that your quarterbacks must always be able to be
efficient from the pocket, no matter what they can do
in terms of outside the pocket, and you know, making
improvisational plays, and obviously Cousins is not that guy. But
(51:31):
he's a professional quarterback who gets the ball to the
right receiver at the right time with the right kind
of throw. That's what Kirk Cousins is. He knows what
he's looking at, he understands what he's reading and what
he's seeing, and the ball comes out. He just knows
how to play the position.
Speaker 2 (51:47):
Greg Cosell with us other side of the football, I
look and the numbers tell me that if the Seattle
offensive line can't prevent Geno Smith from getting a muddy
pocket and getting hit a few times against this team,
they won't ever do it because they don't rush the
pass very well.
Speaker 1 (52:02):
Right.
Speaker 4 (52:02):
It's the biggest weakness that they have. Because they've got
some good players at a linebacker and on the back
end they may have the best safety duo in the
league and Simmons and Baits, but what they can't do
is pressure the quarterback with their down group. And that's
why on third down they have one of the highest
five man pressure rates in the league because they can't
rush with four. So then they do have a linebacker
(52:25):
who's a really, really good player named Caden Ellis number
fifty five. He is through six games ian he has
played every snap for them. He's a really good player
and he does have pass rush ability. But they will
do a lot of zone pressures, okay, and Simmons will
get involved as a pressure player at times. Ellis is
a pressure player. But the one weakness and you nailed it,
(52:48):
is they do not they can't rush the quarterback with
their down four.
Speaker 2 (52:51):
Can they stop the run?
Speaker 4 (52:55):
Well, that becomes a question of whether the Seahawks are
able to run it. They clearly made a commitment to
try to do that against the Niners, as you know,
and then he couldn't do it. No, so they kind
of stopped because they couldn't do it. So I think
they have to keep trying. We'll see where that matchup goes.
But they have got to keep trying to run the football.
Speaker 2 (53:16):
When you talk to coaches, Greg around and I know
you talked to coaches and personnel guys and all that,
and the ex players running the football like there isn't
Outside of the late Great may he rest in peace,
Mike Leach. Outside of Coach Leach, every coach will always
tell you, well, we got to establish the run. We
got to run the football. We got to establish the run,
which is it sounds good and it sounds great, and
(53:37):
it's a football thing. It's a football term. It's a
cliche in a sense. But you know, establishing the run
and actually, you know, actually accomplishing that are two different things.
Seattle tried, like you said, they tried, they really did,
and it went nowhere against probably a better front that
they're going to see this week. But at what point
do you just kind of throw your hands in the air,
because I mean, if your offensive line can't block and
(53:59):
can't open up the whole, than what do you do?
Speaker 5 (54:02):
No?
Speaker 4 (54:02):
And actually they featured a number of double teams against
the Niners. They clearly tried to run the football. See
to me, I would never use the word to establish
the run. I think your run game has to be productive,
but it's not a matter of coming out and saying
we're going to run the ball on you know, first down,
second down. And balance is a relative term for some
(54:24):
team's balance as sixty five thirty five, for other teams
balances fifty to fifty. But the run game has to
be part of your offense, not a throwaway, not oh
let's hand it off once in a while. It has
to be much more than that, but it doesn't mean that,
you know, you have to come out and hand it off.
And by the way, the teams that are good running teams,
(54:44):
they don't ever have to establish it in any given
game because during the week of preparation, the opponent that
they're playing in they know that the other team can
run the ball, So you don't have to come out
you know. I know I'm going back years, but everybody
used to talk about the Dallas Cowboys with m and
Smith and well they have to establish the run every week. No,
they don't. Everybody knows they can run the ball. So
(55:05):
when when you're preparing to play teams that can run
the ball, well you defend the run. That's the way
it works. So but the Seahawks, I mean they can't.
They haven't been able to run the ball at all.
I mean, you saw what happened against the forty nine ers.
I mean they just couldn't. They couldn't gain yards.
Speaker 2 (55:21):
No, and they try, like you said, they tried. It's
not like it was a lack of trying. They had
plenty of it.
Speaker 4 (55:26):
Yeah, then what happens hate dinner up? But then what
happens is you end up with issues in pass pro.
I mean against the Niners, Smith played much of the
game at of squeezed pockets. I mean, they it was
just hard. It's just hard, you know, when your quarterback's
always feeling squeezed and he's in money the noisy pockets,
it's just hard.
Speaker 2 (55:43):
Well, And that's you use the term earlier when you're
describing Kirk Cousins Greg that our friend Hugh Millin uses
all the time that the you know, quarterback play is
what it's thrown to the right guy at the right time,
with accuracy, right.
Speaker 4 (55:53):
At the right time, with the right kind of throw.
That's quarterback play.
Speaker 2 (55:56):
That's quarterback play. Gino didn't really have that last week.
It didn't feel like and maybe it was because that
pocket was muney.
Speaker 4 (56:04):
You know, I personally thought on the interception he threw
to Green later in the game, I thought that Metcalf
kind of you know, I hurt him on that. I
thought that he should have he kind of drifted upfield
and he allowed Green to undercut that too easily.
Speaker 2 (56:19):
Yeah, DK and he talked about that too, kind of
like the rounding off of the route. And then and
DK actually took DK actually took that on the He
took that one on the gym. The other day, he
came up in the his weekly news conference and said, hey,
that was on me. He called Geno.
Speaker 4 (56:31):
He said, okay, well that's good to hear, because that's
what I thought watching. I don't listen. I don't have
time to listen to, you know, news conference.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
Really, you know, I'm shocked by that. No, no, I
don't listen to that stuff.
Speaker 4 (56:41):
But but you know, I just from watching the tape,
I thought that he drifted up field Green tried to
undercut him anyway, but by what DK did, he allowed
him to undercut him.
Speaker 2 (56:52):
I think he's a fascinating fastening matchup this week. To
wrap it up, Greg, I think a fastening matchup from
this standpoint, You've got a team that can't rush the
path at all. He hasn't done that at all this
season very well, and you've got a team that hasn't
been able to block anybody all year. That's one matchup.
Then you've got a secondary on the other side that
is a little bit banged up and dinged up against
(57:12):
a team that goes out of eleven personnel and a
quarterback that wants to check it all over the place.
If you're a bet man, it feels like bety over,
like we might see some points.
Speaker 4 (57:22):
This doesn't happen every week Ian obviously, but two weeks
ago Kirk Cousin threw for over five hundred yards and
I had a coach call me that Saturday morning because
that was a Thursday night game and say he could
And the coach has been in the league for thirty years,
he said, given how much Tampa blitz, he says, I
can't recall a quarterback having a better game, So I
mean Kirk Cousins, you know. And again Kirk Cousins always
(57:43):
seems to have two games a year that are bad,
so you never know when those are going to happen.
But he's also really good. He just knows how to
play the position.
Speaker 2 (57:51):
It feels like the indoor first of all. And Gino
stats indoor unbelievable, by the way, Like he loves playing indoors,
Like it's crazy what his numbers are indoors. And it
almost feels like a Detroit game except for no pass rush,
you know from from the Falcons.
Speaker 4 (58:05):
And I think they can if they can protect, they
can make some Hay in the past game because you know,
I think the corner opposite aj Terrell is Mike Used.
He's been in the League of dead. Their slack corners
Alfred who at times struggles. So I think if they
can protect they might be able to throw the ball
really effectively in this game.
Speaker 2 (58:21):
They like this, you know him who may be protecting
him when it's all said and done, that's being him
being gino. It might be Jason Peters at right tackle.
Is he fifty yet he's he's close, He's very close.
He's forty two, so he's yeah, and but in football
years he's five hundred.
Speaker 6 (58:38):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (58:39):
I mean that's he was a great, great player, and
tell a great player.
Speaker 2 (58:42):
Yeah, he's he played okay for them at times last season.
I think they like him in the room. They brought
him back on the practice squad. He should be elevated.
I think this this week in forsythe Forsyth is hurt. Yeah,
Forsyth is hurt. So he's uh, you know, you're down
to number four, But that number four is a Hall
of Famer at some point, even though he is and
KT let me ask you one quick thing again, because
(59:03):
I was having a debate with somebody about this yesterday.
Quick thought from you on Charles Cross and what you're
seeing this year. I want to reiterate this for people
that were listening to our show yesterday, not you and me,
but somebody else.
Speaker 4 (59:14):
I think Charles Cross is solid, but I don't think
he's proven to be elite. And I think that there's
to me. And again, I'm not an online coaching and
I want to make that clear, but I'm just watching
the tape and I think that there's just too many
pass protection snaps in which he doesn't hold up the
way that you would expect given his draft status. Now
(59:35):
he's a good player, you know, we're not talking about
a guy that needs to be benched or that can't play.
But I think that there's a few too many poor
snaps and pass protection that we would then need to
get cleaned up.
Speaker 2 (59:47):
My friend love having this chat every Friday. Next week
we'll do it again. Buffalo is in town next week.
Speaker 4 (59:52):
So woh there you go, yah Buffalo Bill.
Speaker 6 (59:55):
Yeah. Good.
Speaker 2 (59:55):
By the way, we'll talk about Amari Cooper and Josh
Allen next week apparently, so that's a coming up next weekend.
Later in the year, we get to talk about Aaron
Rodgers and his new wide receiver Devontae Adams when they
come here to Seattle later in the year.
Speaker 4 (01:00:06):
Aaron Rodgers can still throw it. I'll tell you that
his legs aren't what they were, but he can still
throw it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
Greg CoA sal you can watch him on the ESPN
Matchup Show this weekend as well. We will take a
break big thanks to Seattle Sider. Come back check in
I Believe with David Riley, head basketball coach at Washington
State University. Coming up next. Ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (01:00:28):
Now back to the Washington State Beef Commissions Football Friday
with the Infernets on your home for the NFL Sports
Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (01:00:42):
Welcome back in Sports Rady ninety three point three kjr FM,
the Internet with you. We're gonna take a little break
from a football Friday for a second because Tom Listen,
everyone knows I love college hoops. College basketball is around
the corner. We're very very close to seeing what happens
with this new look Washington State team. Of course, very
much a different looking team than last year that went
(01:01:02):
to the NCAA Tournament, but still a team I think's
got some potential this season. Let's be joined right now
by the head coach from Washington State University, David Riley's
with US High. How are you, coach.
Speaker 5 (01:01:13):
I'm doing good, doing good, Happy to be on.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
I appreciate you joining US Vegas WCC media Day. You
got Cedric Coward and you got Isaiah Wats down there
with you. That's exciting times. And let's just talk about
what you have seen from your team so far working
out and and and what are the things that jump
out about your team heading into this season.
Speaker 5 (01:01:35):
And it's been it's been fun the last last few
weeks to be able to get out there and start
practicing with these guys, and I'm just excited about the
versatility and and and just the group coming together. We've
got some really spirited practices and I think some great
people obviously have coached some of the Eastern guys to
have Parker and Isaiah from that Washington State team last
(01:01:56):
year to kind of help it. Still that culture has
been great, and we're just excited to keep his name wrong.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
I love preseason picks, and you know the polls and
all those types of things. The coaches poll picks Washington
State to finish fifth in the WCC this season when
we got a couple of years of the WCC, I
guess before the new PAC twelve comes into existence, but Gonzaga,
Saint Mary, Santa Clara, San Francisco, and then Washington State.
(01:02:23):
I should point out to our listeners at last year
was it was finished tenth out of twelve teams picked
to finish tenth out of twelve in the PAC twelve
preseason coaches poll. We know what happened. They went on
to finish second and onto the NCAA Tournament. I know
polls don't mean a ton of coaches, but can you
use this as incentive? It all to your guys saying hey,
we're not getting the old typical respect card.
Speaker 5 (01:02:45):
You know. I think we just used it to show
our guys because everyone's due to the league, and just
to show our guys how good the league is. We
feel like we have a ton of talent, We have
a really good team, and pressed degree coming in tach
places just shows how deep the league is. And we
got ground and the Cup. We've got a bunch of
teams that have experience. You look at the teams ahead
(01:03:06):
of us, they have a bunch of guys coming back
that have played together, and so this just kind of
use it to emphasize the importance of every single day
that we have right now in the fall and how
we got to make we get ground to catch up
on just the chemistry piece and that we want to
do for our goals this year.
Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
David Riley's head coach at Washington State Basketball, joining us
here on the Beacon Plumbing hotline. I don't know the
way the world is right now with college athletics, David,
it's you know, we see it in football. The Washington
State football team has forty nine new players this season.
The Husky football team over here there, they're whining about
the fact they have fifty one, which I mean, my
math tells me that's not much different. But football, we
(01:03:43):
see a lot of turnover. In basketball. I think there's
turnover a lot of turnover every year. But in your school,
certainly is the case coaching change and all those deals.
But in the WCC it sounds like you said, there's
a lot of teams that have a lot of returning guys.
Is the WCC a little bit different in that regard?
Are you going against a bunch of teams that are
truly intact.
Speaker 5 (01:04:04):
Uh when you when you look at the top half
of the league, and I think that's probably the case
for most leagues, right Like the teams that have have
the ability, uh to have continent annuity, they're gonna be
these teams that have picked the highest and they usually
have the most success. And so zagas returning. Dang there
everybody from the team last year, and they added some
good players. You know, Santa Clair's got I think their
(01:04:27):
whole four coming back, plus they added a guy from
two years ago that it was really good, Carlos Stewart,
USF DOT guys. St. Mary's has returning MVP. There's a
lot of guys going back there in the league. It's
a well coached league with established programs and so yeah,
I just kind of named it the four teams that
were ahead of us, But there's you can look down
the line as the rest of the league as well
(01:04:47):
as a lot of continent league.
Speaker 6 (01:04:48):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:04:49):
Let me let me ask about Cedric Coward. He was
named preseason All WCC to the off season All Preseason
WCC team at six foot six, two pound uh senior
from fred No. Uh. You know, he was at Eastern
with you last year for folks who didn't get a
chance to watch him play much. What does Cedric bring
to your team?
Speaker 5 (01:05:08):
Uh, just just everyday mentality. Like the guy works so hard.
No one with with historjectory from last few years doesn't
work hard. But like I just think you'd mindset the
number one thing as a basketball player. He's just missiversatile,
will take whatevery defense, gives you your post of smaller guys,
you can take bigger guys in the perimeter, you can rebound,
(01:05:30):
you can play in transition. Just a complete player at
sixty six. So excited to see what he gets to
start the year off.
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
You You touched on the other player down there with
you guys in Vegas for the media days festivities for
the WCC, and that is Isaiah Watts. We're familiar with him.
He and Parker who didn't play last year obviously was
I think red shirting. But but Isaiah was a big
part of that tournament team last year. He's a holdover,
he's stuck around. Uh, he's kind of a koop through
(01:05:57):
and through. What has he meant to your team, especially
in the off season the workouts kind of trying to
get guys acclimated what, he's only a sophomore. He's a
young guy. But what does he meant for you guys?
Speaker 5 (01:06:09):
Yeah? No, his energy has been infectious. Like when when
I first got here, Uh, it was it was a
veteran team that went to the NCAA tournaments and just
talking to that team, Uh, the first day I got
the job, as you could tell as they had a
voice as a freshman, which is rare. So I think
just he've been able to carry that compete every single
(01:06:29):
day since he's been here. And I think that that's
that's just kind of showing our guys what it takes.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
What what kind of steps do you expect him to take?
From last year to this year. We kind of saw
a guy that would come off the bench, give some energy,
could knock down some big shots here and there. But
what there's more. I'm sure more to his game than that.
What is it?
Speaker 5 (01:06:47):
Yeah, uh, you're you're absolutely right. Last year he was
kind of the the guy we throw they throw him
in the in the game and he made a couple
of shots. He played a little more, he didn't his
minutes will be limited, and he gave him some huge sparks,
like hit some big shots in the NCAA Tournament and
especially down the stretching this season, he had some really
big games, and so we're just looking for more consistency,
(01:07:11):
Like he's able to show those scoring verse more consistently,
He's obviously gonna play more. And then what he's done
is become a better defender. He's one of our more
more active guys defensively with the reflections and steals so
far this fall. And then he's showing the ability to
get to the room like he's a great cutter, he's
a great straight line driver. He's and working on his
handle and his passing ability to be able to do
(01:07:33):
a little bit more. And so he's the kind of
guys as he embraces this offense and really get gets
it totally understood, he's gonna he's gonna blossom. And I
think he's starting to show that right now.
Speaker 2 (01:07:45):
Dave Rally with his washingon state basketball coach, no relation.
But there's another Wats. We've got lots of Wats on
this team, right, is it Lawan or le John? How
how do you pronounce it?
Speaker 5 (01:07:55):
Lawan?
Speaker 6 (01:07:57):
Yees?
Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
Yeah, I'm excited to see he's six six, two thirds three.
What does this guy bring to the table.
Speaker 5 (01:08:03):
And he's another versatile Swiss army knife. My two Fresno
boys said it from the one, you can you can
play anywhere out of the guardian position.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:08:15):
The one is another guy like the one in Idiah
just infectious, infectious energy and you know the ones. His
development story has been right up there with the like
he read shirted for me at Eastern Washington his first year,
last year's freshman year and he's taking a good junctis
so sided to see what.
Speaker 1 (01:08:33):
He can do.
Speaker 2 (01:08:34):
It's like to have a guy red shirt. You know,
Parker did the same thing right and and like, guys
do do you guys read shirt much anymore? In college basketball?
Feels like there's no patience for that man.
Speaker 5 (01:08:44):
It's it's you're seeing it less and less, that's for sure.
Since I've been uh coaching college basketball, something that that
we've done in Euston, Washington and I plan on Julian
Washington State though, And I think that it just comes
to having a plan freach guy, like we've really proud
of ourselves on and development. If you come in with
a freshman, you have a plan, you know, month by month,
year by year. I think guys can buy into that
(01:09:06):
red shirt and really get a lot out of it.
And we've had multiple guys play NBA games, guys get
drafted that were walk on's that were there were red shirts,
and they just trust that process. And so I think, yes,
it's all about having a vision.
Speaker 2 (01:09:21):
That's that's inherent on a coach. I would assume, like
I can in today's world, how important just community is
it communication? Because again I'm just going back like, guys
don't want to buy in. You just have to be honest,
I guess with with a young guy coming in, right,
and just like the communication factor has to be huge
for sure.
Speaker 5 (01:09:38):
Yeah, you you really can't blow smoke with them, Like
if you lie to them and tell them they're going
to be starting as a freshman, they're just there's gonna
be like you got to be upfront in the recruiting process.
And as long as that happens, I think the reality
that you put them in as as a freshman helps
them and get a shipp on their shoulder and developed.
So I think think that's something that one of the
(01:10:01):
main reasons we were able to keep most of our
guys at Eastern Washington. We had a plan going forward,
like there's nil offers on the table for some of
these guys, and they ended up coming back to play
for us because they believed in the vision and they
had bigger goals from basketball. So I think it's even
more important now to keep your guys is to make
sure you communicate that plan and Peter, real thing.
Speaker 2 (01:10:21):
I'll wrap it up with this, David. Just the style
of play when we when you first got hired them
and we talked to you here in kJ R and
Seattle and you know, kind of talked about it. You
talked about the you know, guys like Isaiah and others
trying to you know, once they figure out the offense.
When when you guys tip it off against Portland State
here in a couple of weeks, what can fans expect
to see?
Speaker 5 (01:10:39):
Uh what, We're going to try to play fast and
try to play together. And I think that's our biggest
thing is we've really done a good job moving the ball,
like I think so far as in practice it's all
we've sixty five percent of our shots have been assisted
that would leave the country, you know, which which is
awesome to see that they're buying into that. So we're
going to play fast, we're gonna we're gonna pay together,
(01:11:01):
and defensively, we're gonna be tough. I think we really
instilled that with our guys and patched off to Kyle
and the last staff and is A and Parker for
helping us continue that. I think that's something that that's
just im bettered in Washington State basketball.
Speaker 2 (01:11:15):
I mean, I was kind of when I first heard
fifth and the cop picked fifth in the conference. I
was a little bit, you know, upset about that as
a Koop fan, And then I thought, I kind of
wish you guys were picked eleventh. You know, I just
I kind of wish because I liked when Kyle's team
was picked tenth last year and and just came up
and slapped people around. So fifth is okay, Eleventh would
have been better. But I think this is gonna be
(01:11:37):
a fun basketball team to watch. I can't wait for
you guys to get things started. Enjoy your time down there,
and we'll talk soon. David, Thank you, absolutely gokugs. There
you go, David Riley, We'll take a break, come back.

week with a hand injury. So the second or division
the Division two rookie is going to get a start.
Speaker 3 (01:12:31):
Let's seat you out.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
The ain't no way, it's worse. No, there's no chance,
and there's a pretty decent chance. It's better and there's
an upside there. So we'll see, all right. Ricolin's gonna
miss game. Tray Brown is also gona miss the game.
They're gonna activate a couple guys you've never heard of
off the practice squad that are cornerbacks. I'm not joking,
it's serious. I don't even know if I've heard of them,
Job and somebody else. Anyway, Yeah, we'll leave, we'll leave

KJR FM, And time now.
Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
For our good friend Rob Rang, brought to you by
Ferrelli's Pizza. Ferrelli'spizza dot com look for a location in
your neck of the woods. Big games this week, can't wait.
And I mentioned this on Thursday. Rob. First of all,
how are you.
Speaker 3 (01:14:05):
My friend?
Speaker 6 (01:14:06):
I'm doing very well, Ian.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
How are you sure I'm good? I mentioned this Thursday
and we had our guys Stuart Mandel on Sneaky good
game to talk about, to discuss, to look at as
well at nine am on Saturday morning, and that would
be Miami and Louisville. And in Miami's got you know,
playoff aspirations, cam Ward and what they're doing Mario Crystobal
down there. But Louisville's I think they're sitting at four
(01:14:30):
and two. If I'm not mistaken, they're playing at home.
What are we seeing who were watching.
Speaker 6 (01:14:34):
In that game? Well, there's a lot of good players
on both sides of the football. But I think everybody's
going to be focusing on in Miami because, as you mentioned,
you know, this is a team that cam Ward of
course has got a Heisman Trophy campaign going at this point.
Mario Christobal is you know, it has the Hurricanes undefeated,
number six in the country in some rankings, So I
(01:14:55):
think that people are going to focus there. But let's
talk about Louisville for a couple of minutes. We haven't
mentioned Leebook Cardinals at this points. And you know, they've
got a quarterback that has been around seems like forever,
and Tyler Shook, former Oregon quarterback like Mario Christobal of
course is the former head coach there. So Shook as
a six foot five, two hundred and twenty five pounds,
he's got plenty of arm talent. He just has had
(01:15:18):
a knack for making some kind of, you know, bone
headed decisions with the football in opportune times. But you know,
we have seen quarterbacks that are a little bit slow
in their development still coming into the NFL and then
wind up having some success. So he is somebody that
definitely NFL scouts are paying attention to. I'd be remiss
(01:15:38):
if I didn't mention two freshman players that have absolutely
put Louisville on the map. Louisville is a has a
track record of producing NFL running backs. You know, unfortunately
for Seahawk fans out there that they saw an example
of that with Grendo, the forty nine ers running back
that that broke free for a big run in that
(01:15:59):
Thursday night lost Isaac Brown and Duke Watson Ian are
both averaging north of six yards per carry. They've been
absolutely dynamic. And then finally, the player that I'm most
excited about, I think NFL scouts what's excited about, is
a wide receiver to Corey Brooks. He's six foot two's
one hundred and eighty five pounds. This is the former
four star recruiter Alabama. He had eight touchdowns for the
(01:16:22):
Crimson Tied a couple of years ago, and he's got
six touchdowns so far this season. He reminds me a
little bit of George Pickens with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and
now he's a little bit slim, but he is a
vertical threat who has kind of sneaky late hands. He
is able to keep his hands down by his body
(01:16:42):
so that the defensive back doesn't know the ball is near,
and then he just twists his arms around and snatches
the ball out of the air and has the body
control to be able to kind of run away from
people and make those tough grabs look pretty easy. So
to Cory Brooks is a receiver that I think that
Seahawks fans, NFL scouts certainly, and you're paying attention to him. Finally,
on the Louisville side, Ashton Gillett six foot three toured,
(01:17:06):
seventy five pounder. He's athletic enough to have to be
a pass rusher out of the two point stance. He's
big and strong enough to be able to drop down
and play more of a defensive end role. Of course,
Mike McDonald loves guys like that, and so I think
that he is somebody to the Seahawks fans should be
paying attention to. Again, all of these players on the
Louisville side, Miami's got a bunch of players as well.
(01:17:26):
Cam Ward We've talked about. They've got a couple of
pass rushers, Elijah Austen, Tyler Baharron. Both of them are transfers,
just like cam Ward, and so again I think that
there is a lot of reason for Miami's success. Everybody's
going to focus in on the transfer quarterback cam Ward,
but Mario Christabal was able to lure a couple of
(01:17:47):
other players on the defensive side of all that are
helping the Canes make some splashes this year as well.
Speaker 2 (01:17:52):
I'm kind of listening to you, wondering and thinking it
sounds like you wouldn't be surprised if if Miami gets
upset here.
Speaker 6 (01:18:01):
An upset, I think that might be pushing a little bit.
I definitely think that Louisville is going to give him
a bit more of a run than people might expect.
You know, Miami has had an incredible start to the season,
but that's been one of the knocks on Mario Christovall
in the past is that he has had some very
talented teams and then they just kind of seem to
stub their toe at some point against a lesser opponent.
(01:18:22):
And I do think that that Louisville at home is
a formidable opponent, and giving all of the weather concerns
of course of the folks in Miami throughout the of
the state of Florida have experienced recently, I think that
this is a little bit of a trap game for
the Miami Hurricanes. So I'm gonna wouldn't be surprised at
all if Louisville gives them a bit of a run.
(01:18:43):
If Tyler Shuk could have the game that he needs
to to kind of solidify his draft stock, because again
he does have legitimate NFL talents, then this might be
the type of environment that would give him that.
Speaker 2 (01:18:54):
I want to tell Robbering Joint to by Furlies Fraies
Pizza dot Com. I want to touch on a one
game tonight, b YU Oklahoma State by you along with
the Iowa State and actually Texas Tech, Texas Tech, Iowa
State BYU all unbeaten in Big Twelve play BYU on
beating overall as is Iowa State. Texas Tech has the
one loss in Pullman, but kind of a three team
(01:19:15):
race right now in the Big Twelve. Oklahoma State kind
of down a little bit. What do you see in
this game? Who we watching?
Speaker 6 (01:19:21):
Yeah, Oklahoma State is down a little bit. I mean
one of the biggest reasons why is the sensational running
back that they have. Oli Gordon has just hasn't been
the same guy so far this year, and injuries and
some off field issues that have certainly been a part
of that. He's a six foot one, two hundred and
twenty five pounder who just simply led college football and
(01:19:43):
rushing yards last year, and he doesn't have one hundred
yard rushing game so far this season, so that's a
big part of it. They've got an edge rusher that
also has been out so far, so far this season,
that again was one of their best players, and so
again I think that's the biggest reason why Oklahoma State
is a little bit downbling. Let's focus it on the
(01:20:05):
undefeated BYU Cougars. As you mentioned, you know, they are
atop the Big twelve at least right now, and you know,
I think a big part of that is a couple
of wide receivers. And the one I want to focus
it on is because I don't believe that he has
the most NFL upside to him as a wide receiver,
Chase Roberts. He's six foot three, two hundred and ten pounds,
so he was much more of an NFL prototype kind
(01:20:27):
of a frame. He's not nearly as slim as the
as that Louisville wide receiver I mentioned before. It's to
Corey Brooks, who as six foot two, one hundred and
eighty five pounds. I mean, that's a twenty five pound
difference over similar height. You can see it in his
upper body and his thighs and in his ability to
break free of tackles. One of the things I like
(01:20:48):
about him is just a body control. A lot of
these bigger wide receivers they don't have that almost Ballerina
type of ability to you know, to change directions in
the air, torton space and be able to use their
frame effectively. You know, Jase Roberts can do that. He's
got really strong hands. He's able to pluck the ball
(01:21:09):
out of the air even when defenders are draped on.
He's a big receiver that plays big and so that
is one of the biggest reasons why that the BYU
is undefeated at this point. I think that they have
a heck of a chance to maybe not run the
table in the Big twelve. That's going to be difficult,
but I definitely think that they have an outside chance
of being one of those twelve teams that makes the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:21:30):
All right, Rob rang joining us I mentioned the nine
o'clock in the morning on Saturday Miami Louisville game, But
if you're a Husky fan, you probably want to tune
into Fox because Nebraska is at number sixteen, unbeaten Indiana right,
and Indiana, of course, will be hosting Washington next week.
Husky's on a buy this week and it sounds like
(01:21:50):
quarterback plays something you're watching in this game.
Speaker 9 (01:21:53):
Yeah, I call him Indiana that the fighting Mike Gaston knows,
and you know, I think that you know, the Indiana
is a team that you don't necessarily expect to have
a great quarterback play, although of course that's where Michael
Pennix began his college career. But now they've got a
quarterback that transferred from Ohio. His name is Curtis Rourke.
Speaker 6 (01:22:16):
And Curtis Rourke is the younger, but more but more
physically gifted brother of Nathan Rourke, who of course is
the star quarterback for the BC Lions of the Canadian
Football League. And you know, of course that's the team
that I am a scout for, and so I've been
watching Curtis Rourke at Ohio and now Indiana for it
feels like the last four or five years. Curtis Rourke
(01:22:39):
is six foot four, He's two hundred and thirty pounds.
He also has a legitimate NFL arm. He is a
better athlete than his older brother, Nathan Rourke, who, as
I mentioned before, is the quarterback now with the BC Lions,
but was with four different NFL teams before before we
got him back in the CFL here. So Curtis Rourke
(01:22:59):
has had a great, you little success again at Ohio
and since Indiana he throws a very catch up ball,
nice tight spiral that again, I think he's gonna really
make him want to be better of the so called
second tier quarterbacks this year. And then finally, one of
the biggest reasons why Nebraska is back on the national
stage is the play of their freshman quarterback Dylan Reyola.
(01:23:21):
You know, he again is a freshman, and so he's
not somebody the NFL scout's gonna be looking at just yet.
But even though he's only eighteen year old freshman at
sixty three two hundred and twenty five pounds, with athletic
ability as well as plenty of arm talent, he is
somebody the scout's gonna be watching as well. So it's
not often that you talk about Nebraska at Indiana and
focusing in at the quarterback position, but certainly scouts will
(01:23:42):
be doing so this weekend. As you mentioned, nine am.
Speaker 2 (01:23:45):
On Talk, All right, Rob rang joining us, brought to
you by Farelli's Pizza. All right, let me let's there's
some dandies here and we'll get to these two right now,
twelve thirty on ABC number seven, Alabama, number eleven, Tennessee,
and it's funny to say that because Alabama at number
seven on was I mean, I'm not sure the last
time they were at number seven maybe early last year
when they lost to Texas and then they bounced back up.
(01:24:07):
But there's a couple of players that the Seahawks would
probably be looking at in this game.
Speaker 6 (01:24:12):
Yeah, and again, everybody's going to be focusing on the
quarterback jentlem Monroland for good reason. We've talked about him
in the past. Let's let's kind of gog elsewhere a
little bit. A couple of players, as you mentioned that
the the Seahawks might be interesting. How about the offensive
guard Tyler Booker six foot five, three hundred and twenty
five pounds. He has the size, he has the power
that you're looking for that you expect from Alabama. Of course,
(01:24:34):
in Seattle continues to have problems with along the interier
of their offensive line. That Lincoln Tomlinson as are starting
left guard. But he's only here on a one year deal,
so who knows what's going to happen in the future
past him. So Tyler Booker is somebody to very much
be paying attention to. And then the inside linebacker Jehad
Campbell six foot two, two hundred and forty pounds. If
(01:24:55):
the Seahawks continues to have their struggles in run defense,
and then I really do think the inside linebacker is
going to be a huge priority for this club in
the upcoming draft. Of course, Jerome Baker and Tyrrell Dotson
are both on one year deals themselves, so again, I
think that guard and inside linebacker going to be two
huge positions of concern for the Seahawks, and Alabama's got
(01:25:17):
two players that would absolutely pick the bill.
Speaker 2 (01:25:21):
Let me just just kind of take a little tangent
here for a second. We don't know what's going to
happen Sunday in Atlanta. You know, guys are banged up
in your reports coming out as we speak right now.
The final one to see who's whereas Peter's going to
be in his forsyfl But that right guard position, are
you surprised that? And I just go back to our
draft coverage, rab are you a little surprised that the
(01:25:42):
Christian Haynes hasn't taken that job?
Speaker 6 (01:25:46):
I'm surprised that Anthony Bradford hasn't played better, and that
considering the Anthony Bradford hasn't played better that Christian Haynes
hasn't had more of an opportunity to unseat him as
they starting at right guard, and because Anthony Bradford the
same player that we saw last year. I mean, when
he lunges, he can move people in the running game.
The problem is he doesn't reset his feat after that lunch,
(01:26:09):
and so again, his initial punch is very effective, and
it's a powerful and aggressive football player. But when defensive
tackles are able to kind of see him come in,
they do a quick little spin move or a swim move,
they're able to elude him immediately, and even if they
are blocked at first, then they are able to kind
of get him off balance and then be able to
(01:26:30):
make the play. And Christian Haynes, to me, was a
guy that I thought was absolutely pro ready, and so
I'm surprised that he hasn't gone on into the field
a little bit earlier. One of the things, of course,
that Ryan Grubb that's kind of talked about is that
he didn't hasn't seen enough power from him. Christian Haynes
was one of the more powerful players that I saw
among the interior offensive lineman in college a year ago.
(01:26:53):
But again that's just a testament to the greater strength
and techniques that you see in the NFL. I do
think that Christian Haynes has to get onto the field
to get more comfortable, to get to play with more power.
I know he has the weight room strength. I just
don't know that he is playing with a great deal
of confidence. Think unfortunately for the Seahawks, the only way
he's going to get that conference is if he gets
(01:27:15):
onto the field. And with the Seahawks obviously playing these
last three games in the ten games span, they haven't
had very many practices, it's pretty difficult for the rookie
to get the opportunity to prove what he can do.
Speaker 2 (01:27:25):
Yeah, the lack of power that you mentioned that I've
heard him and McDonald talk about that is odd because
that was never something that you brought up, that any
of our pre draft conversations came up. That's certainly not
something that was brought up by Jim Moore. In fact,
it was the opposite when we talked to his coach,
the former Seahawk coach, Jim Morat on draft days. So
that to me is just an odd one. It's odd
how that's worked out. But we'll see what happens this weekend.
(01:27:47):
Seahawks and Falcons on Sunday, ten o'clock in the morning.
All Right, Main Event, Buddy, the Main Event four thirty
on Saturday afternoon ABC. A Classic SEC matchup, sir, A
Classic SEC matchup. Number five Georgia at number one, new
conference member Texas. We've got quarterbacks here that could be
(01:28:10):
future first round picks. When I think about Georgia, I
think about dudes on defense all the time. Longhorns have
a bunch of guys. Who are we talking about in
this game?
Speaker 6 (01:28:20):
Yeah, I think we have to start the conversation at quarterback.
I mean just Texas specifically. You know, Arch Manning is
likely to be the starter yet again, and I think
he is a future number one overall selection, just like
his you know, his uncle, Peyton Manning and of course
Eli Manning as well, you know, and Arch Manning has
(01:28:40):
that type of ability. But he's only a red shirt freshman,
so he's not going to be eligible for this year's
draft class. He of course has seized the job since
quinn Ewer is the player that I'm very very high on.
That he went down with an injury, and that's I
believe that it's Basically, the durability factor is going to
be the biggest reason that could push him down the
board a little bit. But I just love his grit
(01:29:01):
and the accuracy that he has shown. He doesn't have
the greatest societ he's probably six foot one, two hundred
and five pounds, but at the same time, again, I
just love the way that he plays the game. To me,
he is a gamer and the kind of guy I
think is going to wind up so called surprising in
the NFL because he doesn't have the elite physical traits
(01:29:22):
that some of the other quarterbacks have. Speaking physical traits
the quarterback position, George's Carson Beck is the guy that
a lot of scouts had as the easy number one
overall quarterback in this year's draft class, But he hasn't
shown that that same type of fire and accuracy that
we saw a year ago, and it's easy to understand
why he lost. The best college football or the best
(01:29:44):
tight end that I've ever seen play at the college
football level, and Brock Bauers to the first round and
one of the better slot receivers I've seen, lab McConkey
went to the second round, and Carson Beck understandably has
kind of struggled since those losses, and so he still
has the arm strength. He's still again six foot four,
two hundred and thirty pounds, He's probably going to run
(01:30:05):
into four sixes. And he's a good athlete. He just
he struggled early on against Alabama and that scared a
lot of people. He made a almost miraculous comeback, you know,
against Alabama here a couple of weeks ago. But still
I want to see a little bit more of the
you know, the finishing touch from him before I'm going
to put him as the top senior quarterback in this
(01:30:29):
draft class. I currently have that being Colorado Shduur Sanders,
and I have some questions about him as well. But
to your greater point, Ian, when I think it's about
the Georgia Bulldogs and Kirby Smart, I think about defensive players.
Mike kel Williams a six touring sixty five pounder. He's
a first round caliber player edge rusher. He also plays
some out some traditional stand up outs, traditional dropback outside linebacker.
(01:30:52):
Six foot two town forty five pounder Jalen Walker. The
best safety in this draft class, at least in my opinion,
is Malachi Starts six foot one too hundred five pounder,
and safety could be a position of concern again for
the Seahawks. Nazir Stackhouse is one of the best run
pluggers six foot two, three hundred and thirty pounder. So again,
(01:31:13):
Georgia is absolutely loaded as always on defense. Texas, on
the other hand, is loaded on offense. And then you
expect that with Steve Sarkisian, the left tackle Calvin Banks
six foot four, three hundred and fifteen pounds, He's a
guy that has good agility. He isn't the biggest guy,
so some people believe that that he might slide inside
(01:31:33):
to guard at the NFL level. The wide receiver Isaiah
Bond is going to be just like what we've seen
is the Texas wide receivers here recently. You know that
he could be an absolute speed demons and the light
up the track at the combine and then one defensive player.
I got to mention it is because he's one of
my favorite corners in this class today. Baron. He is
(01:31:54):
a guy that you know is about five eleven, one
hundred and ninety five two pounds, but he plays more
physical then you would expect. Gets his hand on the
football offline He's just a really instinctive corner I'm not
going to say that he's next coming of Devin Witter
Spooring like that, but I do believe that he is
a starting nickel cornerback right out of the gate in
the NFL. And of course we've seen now those guys
(01:32:16):
can go in the first round and perhaps early on should.
Speaker 2 (01:32:19):
Be a hell of a game. Good week in a
college football man, good week in a college football coming
up with all of these matchups, we just broke down, Uh,
what do you get up at Fox sports dot com
this week?
Speaker 6 (01:32:29):
You know, I'm almost embarrassed to tell you this he is,
But then you know, there is such a such a
love for mock drafts that what I have up right
now is an early mock draft and already, uh, you know,
kind of projecting who's gonna go where the Seahawks of course,
or in the middle portion of the first round offer.
You know, obviously we don't know who's gonna wind up
winning the Super Bowl at this point or who's going
(01:32:51):
to end the number one overall selection. So I basically
just went off of the gambling website that that was projecting,
you know, best Super Bowl odds and kind of took
the reverse order. So right now I have the Carolina
Panthers sitting number one overall, yet again going with the
wide receiver slash cornerback we've talked about so many times,
Traviner from Colorado. I mentioned shaduer Sanders. He is the
only quarterback I have in the top ten. And this
(01:33:14):
is a draft class that is loaded a cornerback, not
necessarily a quarterback. We have never seen a draft that
had three corners go in the top six. But that's
exactly where I'm projecting to my mock draft because that's
really where the talent is. And of course, one player
that we have talked about, Boise State running back to
Ashton genty, I have him in the top ten as well.
(01:33:34):
It's rare you see backs going the top ten anymore,
say Kwon Barkley's Bijon Robinson types. That's the kind of
talent of Ashton gents Boise State is.
Speaker 2 (01:33:44):
Don't be embarrassed. The only time we ever give you
a hard time about your mock draft is when the
rest of us are done with the draft. On a
late Saturday afternoon at the Seahawk head quarters, We're going
to dinos to have a beer and you're sitting there
banging out a mock draft for the next year twelve
months away. But you know what, that's why we love you,
and that's why we have you on every week. Rob
rang And from Fox Sports dot Com and big thanks
to Farelli's Pizza. We'll talk to you next week. Sounds good,
