Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now from the Star Rentals Sports Tests.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Your ninety three point three KJRFM sports headlines.

Speaker 3 (00:06):
Headlines are brought to you by Frost Brewed Corps. Light
Team USA dominant in their first match of the Four
Nations face off in a six to one win over Finland.
Kapolcaco was a healthy scratch priors to the game. That's
kind of a bummer. I think we were gonna looking
forward to seeing.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
That, but I mean, we want have won in there, right.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Yeah, for sure, and it would have been nice, you know,
six to one. I would have taken a CaCO goal
for sure. But he remains unscathed and that's nice to
see too, because he's gonna be a big part of
the second half of the year. Husky's hoops in another
big ten road game against Penn State tomorrow at eleven am.
You can hear it right here on ninety three point
three KJRFM. Cougar's men's basketball taken on Saint Mary's tomorrow

(00:46):
at seven pm on the road. That is a huge game,
I think for Washington State. I'm not sure. Probably too
late for the tournament stuff, but you know, it's a
great litmus test against one of the best teams in
college basketball for sure. New York Yankees right handed Marcus
Stroman reported to camp Friday after missing the team's first
two days of workouts, insisting he is ready to make
thirty plus starts and will not change his role. You're

(01:07):
going to change your role, buddy. If you're a member
of the New York Yankees, you are not making that rotation.
Six former East Mississippi State Community College football players who
appeared in the documentary series Last Chance You have sued
the school, Netflix, the National Junior College Athletic Association, and
the programs director over their portrayals. I guess, Jessin, you

(01:27):
and I were the only people who weren't sued for
them by them.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
Yeah, I know, we're pretty you know.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
It's funny because I was very interested in a lot
of the players that were on that, oh for sure,
you know, just because they're stories. We're just so amazing.
But good thing I didn't tell them because apparently, yeah,
everyone's being sued. I get it, though, Like I get it.
Those they didn't make any money and Netflix did.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
One way you can make up for that money is
winning the cash contest. Sports Radio ninety three point three
KJRFM brings you the thousand dollars power Play. Listen every
every hour between six am to seven pm for the
nationwide keyword to enter on our website at nine three
three KGr dot com. This hour word is bonus. Let's go, Jess.

(02:12):
I am not I in forness. I would love to
be ian forness someday, but you know, just right now,
I am not in fornest. My name is Chris Crawford.
If you're not familiar with me, I worked for NBC Sports.
Who is I You know, it's weird, but I have
to introduce myself a lot like I expect, you know,
after doing this, some that like grocery stores and stuff
will be like, oh, you're that KJR guy and it's
just not happening. It's just not happening.

Speaker 5 (02:34):
Well, I don't know how much your Shelton neighbors. Well,
that's true, listen as true as much as they should.
They should be listening on a regular basis. But Chris Crawford,
you are a gem. Every single time we get the
opportunity to have you here on kJ.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Well, it is absolutely my honor. I say this every
time I do it. But this was my dream job.
This is what I've wanted to do since I was
a little kid listening to gas Man and listening to
Gros with Gas and listening to that jerk from three
to seven. Now, I have always wanted to work at
this station, and getting a chance to do it just
as a guest is really really fun. And it's Valentine's

(03:11):
just happy Valentine.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
Happy Valentine's Day. I feel like in this dreary weather
and a lot of it just feels like there's some
stress in the air no matter what.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
You're doing these days.

Speaker 5 (03:22):
That's probably Seattle winter and everybody starts to get a
little tight around these days.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
That we should introduce a little love today.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Oh one hundred thousand percent. You know, we need some
hot coco, that's what we need.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
I think I know where some might be who I
might have to make you some in the next commercial world.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
To get me with the the fakest marshmallows possible, the
best type of hot chocolate.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
They oh to come in the pack.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's absolutely by the way, I'm going
to work on one hundred percent. I got a lot
of texts the last week or with that week I
did it where I said one hundred percent too much.
Sometimes I might say seventy seven plus twenty three percent
as a way to just kind of, like, you know,
show off my math skills.

Speaker 5 (04:03):
But yeah, that's that's radio math at its finest.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
So since it's Valentine's Day, I thought it would be
interesting to talk about what we're romantic about in sports.
And to be clear, I am not talking abou chick
about wow romantic. I am talking about those things that
nostalgias and probably not the right word, but those things
that kind of make us feel warm inside about sports.
What are those things that you know? And it's easy

(04:31):
to be negative about a lot of stuff right now.
You know, the Seahawks season ends in disappointment, Ryan grub
only last first season. I as a Husky fan, was
disappointed by that. I know other people disagree with me,
but you know, it's fair to say that Tenure didn't
in the right way. We don't have an NBA team yet,
the crack and season's been a disappointment for sure, but
there are still things to be optimistic about. And I

(04:53):
think Valentine's Day and it's so great that Valentine's Day
is so close to the start of spring training because
that's my number one. That's the thing that I think
I feel the most romantic about in sports, because yes,
spring training has changed a lot. The games are no
longer cheap to go to. It's you can't find cheap
hotels anywhere. There's a Lakita right next to the stadium

(05:14):
that cost hundreds of dollars. Hundreds of dollars.

Speaker 4 (05:17):
People want to be there.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
And that's great and I love it, but it's just,
you know, there's a thin line between love and gouging,
and I would say that that crosses that line. My friends,
if Lakita sponsors the show, I apologize, by the way, but.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
They do not at the moment.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
And by the way, is it Lakita or is it
La Quinta Lakita?

Speaker 4 (05:36):
Okay, Oh it's Lakita. Ok Yeah? Great, I know you
had that one. Good.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
I do not want to see the text lines going
off on me on that one.

Speaker 5 (05:43):
I don't even know if that's a local chain because
I'm pretty sure they're national. But yeah, I think we're
good with the listeners right now.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Wonderful. That's all that matters to me. Need to be liked, definitely.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
Needs Oh I am with you on that one.

Speaker 5 (05:57):
I think our brave leader uh told me one time
in the beginning of my tenure here, which has not
been very long. That is my greatest strength and my
greatest speaks. This is the need to be like I'm
gonna be me.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
Though I hear yeah, amen, It's way too late for
me to change. Jess is much younger in spirit than me,
so you have time to change if you want, but
I definitely can't. But spring training is just that time
for optimism.

Speaker 5 (06:22):
You know.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
I joked with Jess when we were talking about planning
the show last night, the Mariners and Dodgers have the
same record right now. It's it's they're tied at zero zero. Yeah, everybody.
They have the same amount of losses. And I totally
get the frustration with this offseason, with some of the
quotes that have come from the front office, But it

(06:43):
doesn't matter how bad this team is. When spring training
and when Opening Day come around, I can't help but
feel that optimism. I can't help but feel.

Speaker 5 (06:52):
That gifting exactly the same. I'm a baseball romantic, sure
I am. Oh that is also falling into the Valentine's
Day spirit. But the sound and I know it sounds
so cliche, but I'm being real, I might be cliche.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
The sound of the cleats, Oh, it's a hack of
the back.

Speaker 5 (07:08):
And also, I think too, there's something about that Arizona
dry air that it just hits a little different when
you're hearing it. Us working in audio, majority of our
stuff is just listening to things and oh, I just
feel like it's so crisp, but it's not cold, right, Yeah,

(07:28):
there's something about it.

Speaker 6 (07:29):
Man.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
It's true, I think for any sport, but baseball in particular,
there's just something about how many games they play. You know,
there's so many chances for things to go right. Now,
there's a lot of chances for things to go wrong,
and unfortunately the Seattle Marris have not gotten off to
great starts and it's cost them pretty dearly in the
you know, these years of where they should be World

(07:51):
Series contenders, there's only been one year they made the postseason,
and even in that year they didn't get off to
the greatest start as well. But you can't help but
feel the optimism and especially noing like with the Mariners
having that rotation and knowing that whoever is the opening
day starter. My guest would be Logan Gilbert. At this point,
you know, you can make an argument for a few guys.
Bryce Miller led the team in era, Brian Wu with

(08:12):
sensational Luis Castillo has done it the last few years
and has been far from a bad picture, So you
could make an argument for anyone. And then George Kirby,
by the way, just George Kirby.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
It's just an embarrassment of riches.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
It is at this point, and that is also why
I understand why people are frustrated to have that embarrassment
of riches in this area and then to have well,
the other that is, but we're staying optimistic. Is there
anything else that in sports that like, really you like
to romanticize.

Speaker 5 (08:40):
Okay, this is going to sound a little weird because okay,
so let's go to NBA. And there's a part of
it where I gravitated towards the Celtics because my husband,
that's NBA is his number one sport. So he's lived
out here for almost as long as I have, which
is a long time with none of your business, and.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
So he loves the Celtics.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Where I grew up in New York, but I never
gravitated towards the Knicks. I never gratated towards local teams.
I loved players and the Celtics, you know, three four
years ago when I started watching them with him, I
fell in love with their players. And it might sound
like front running because of obviously their recent success, but

(09:20):
I love their team so much. So for me, NBA
playoffs in general, I've romanticize that because it is the
best part.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
It's a long season too.

Speaker 5 (09:30):
I mean it's half as long as a baseball season,
but it's still long. It's the same length as an
NHL season. And then the playoffs going for ever. And
so for me, that's when I feel like, and we
know there's load management out there and everything, so we
get the best out of all of those players, and
I just love it.

Speaker 4 (09:49):
I love the NBA playoffs.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
I totally get it. And now they take a long time,
there's no question about that, but that's kind of great.
You know, I'd much rather that take forever than regular season.

Speaker 7 (10:00):
You know.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Oh, ever, agree, every game matters, you know, right, you have.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
To have your best players out there at all time.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Seventy seven plus twenty three percent coming up. Well, first,
I want to tell you, we want to hear what
you are romanticizing about, So hit up the text line
four nine four five one. That's to tell them where
do you text line? What's game time?

Speaker 4 (10:20):
Oh, it's totally time for sure?

Speaker 3 (10:22):
And then what are these voice things that I'm always
to talk abauck?

Speaker 5 (10:26):
Chris and I can tell you all about it with
our new and improved iHeartRadio app, which is great. We
make it so user friendly because you just have to
hit that little microphone at the top of it. You
just go to our station and our show is on
the air. It'll say Ian for DEESK, but Chris Crawford
is in for Ian forness. Just hit the microphone. You
have thirty seconds or less to state your case. And also,

(10:48):
what we've done in the past on Valentine's Day is
give people a mulligan where we allow them to if
you forgot to make your partner, I should say, because
we have a lot of lady listeners, her husband, wife, whoever,
whoever is the person in your life that you want
to Valentine. If you've forgot to do something this morning
and they're not listening, you can send in a talk

(11:10):
back and I will podcast those separately so you can
hear all of that. So if you want to send
a shout out to someone you love on Valentine's Day,
do it on the talkbacks and we will play them
at two thirty.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
That's awesome. So today's show, we're going to have r J.
Anderson of CBS Sports. He's going to be coming on
at one twenty. We're going to talk a little bit
at MLB Draft college baseball starting this week. Mariners have
the third pick, but also RJ is an amazing baseball reporter,
so we'll talk about whether the Mariners have some optimism
coming up, and then we're going to talk to Danie O'Neil.
I have some pretty wacky ideas that I want to

(11:43):
pass by a Daniel.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
He is whacky one thousand.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
I don't think there's anybody who's better with wacky than
my friend. Even though he doesn't really know me.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
He knows you, he knows of me.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Well.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
I think you guys are kindred spirits.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
He might be kindred spirits. But coming up next r
J Anderson to talk why we should be enthusiastic for
the twenty twenty fourth season. Sports Radio ninety three point three, Kidjr.
Chris Craft Third, and Trenesse We're going to have RJ
Anderson on in just one second, and we're going to
talk about, you know, a couple of things. Number One,
RJ just put out his MLB Draft rankings, and RJ

(12:17):
does this as well as anybody. He is one of
the best at not only scouting, but looking at the
analytics and looking at how to process this stuff. His
hit rate over the last few years has been awesome.
And the Mariners have the third pick in the draft,
and they got it by accident. It is something that

(12:38):
they didn't do really other than not make the playoffs
to be able to qualify for it. But just the
fact that they're going to be able to add to
what me and my buddy Keith Law believe is the
best farm system in all of baseball. So getting a
chance to add that. But also talking to RJ about
this offseason, and I think that we're all pretty frustrated
by what's gone on, you know, the lack of moves,

(12:59):
the two big being bringing back Jorge Polanco and adding
Donovan Solano. Yes, I see that, I see that. There
was just somebody who will no longer be at the station.
I think coming soon there. Sorry, I'm very easily distracted,
but just RJ being one of those guys who can talk,
and he's here with us Sner now on the Begon

(13:20):
Plumbing hotline. Let's just end all my rambling. Please welcome
my good friend r J Anderson of CBS Sports to
the show. RJ, how's it going?

Speaker 6 (13:28):
Hey, it's going well. How about yourself?

Speaker 3 (13:30):
It's not going too bad. We'k out some snow over here?
I know you're on the East Coast. Is the weather
okay over there?

Speaker 6 (13:37):
Yes, today it's been beautiful. But we just got five
or six inches of snow a few days ago, so
we're on the same boat.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah. Yeah, for sure, we didn't get quite that much,
but it's been you know, we're not used to it
like you are over there. One of the things we
are used to, RJ, is not necessarily the most exciting
off seasons for the Seattle Mariners. And you know, you
take a look at this roster and I would ask
you just straight up, how frustrated should Seattle Mariner fans

(14:03):
be by the lack of big moves that have been
made so far?

Speaker 6 (14:07):
Yeah? I think it was a pretty disappointing offseason. Then,
you know, I thought they had a chance to establish
themselves as the top team in the American League West,
this winner, and they didn't do that. And I'm not
saying that they can't win the division once we get
into the regular season, that's certainly possible, but I think
it is in this opportunity, and of course, you know,
we can get into the blame game. Was the ownership,

(14:29):
Was it the front office? I think at the end
of the day, it kind of doesn't matter because what
actually matters here is the end result, and that's that
they haven't maximized the talent they have in place. They
haven't maximized the world serious chances, and I think that's
really unfortunate, and I think it's justifiable to be frustrated
with them.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
Chris Crawford and for Ian Forness talking to R. J.
Anderson on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline, So you did mention
that the chance for the AL West, it is worth
pointing out that this division didn't spend a whole back
of a lot. Now, the two teams that did spend
were the the Angels, which I think surprised some folks,
and certainly as the Athletics for reasons that may have
not had a whole heck of a lot to do

(15:07):
with baseball, but maybe more about pressure, about you know,
a potential upcoming salary floor and just you know, potentially
just not looking like the cheapest organization in baseball. But
you look at this division, it doesn't seem to me
RJ that they're that far behind maybe not that far
ahead either of those other teams in the AOST.

Speaker 6 (15:27):
No, I think they have a real chance of winning
the division. And if I had to pick a team
tomorrow or you know, in a few weeks, I might
end up looking Seattle because I think Houston is taking
to step out right. I think that the Rangers are
just really hard to you know, forecast because of the
injury risk. And frankly, I don't really think the Angels
of the Athletics will be relevant over respect to the

(15:49):
division title. You know, maybe one of those teams works
their way into the wild card pitcher, but I don't
think they have the horses, so you compete for the
division title. So I think Seattle is still in a
respectable position. I think they certainly have the most room
for internal growth throughout the season because of their farm system,
and because you have to assume that some of these
players are going to have better years than they had

(16:10):
last year. But again, if we're talking about, you know,
was this off season, you know, kind of a missed
opportunity for them to widen the gap even more between
now an opening day, I would say yes.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Chris Crawford and Free and for Neest talking to RJ Anderson,
So is there any And I'm putting you on the
spot here, and I've done that for a long time.
R J and I have been talking for way too long,
putting you on the spot. Is there any particular offensive
player that you think the Mariners should have been all
over this offseason that ended up going somewhere else?

Speaker 6 (16:41):
The going somewhere else. That's a good question because I
thought you were going to ask, is there any particular
offensive player who I thought they should have acquired, should
still acquire just now an opening day?

Speaker 3 (16:52):
I'm going to make you do both. I'm going to
make you do both.

Speaker 6 (16:56):
I shouldn't have But no, you know, I think the
one answer I asked for, like every contender, is hass
on Kim because you know he's gonna miss the first
half and you're gonna miss some time to begin the season. Sure,
but you know, you're talking about a very good defensive
mill endfielder who you know, he's been a league average that.
I know there's some concern about him coming back from
shoulder surgery and what exactly is offensive game will look like.

(17:18):
But I feel like Seattle is one of those teams
that could have rolled the dice there and said, Okay,
you know, we'll see you in May or June or whatever.
And when you do get Bass, you're probably an upgrader
for what we have in place. You know, maybe you
have riabluss by a second base until can return to
what have you. So I thought the Raids got a
really good deal there in terms of, like you know,
looking out in perspective acquisitions. I guess it just depends

(17:40):
on what happens between now the deadline, because there are
a lot of teams who I think could find themselves
you know, competitive. There's also some challenge trades out there.
I mean, you look at Baltimore for instance, they would
seem to have more baths in spots, and maybe there's
some trade there for Seattle sends an arm to Baltimore
for one of their bats between now the line. But

(18:00):
again that's getting a little bit of ahead of ourselves with.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
A challenge trade like that. Do you typically see those
between two playoff contenders or is that typically something you
see from two teams that wouldn't necessarily be challenging. I
think the concept of a challenge trade is fascinating and
it's kind of subjective, but what typically happens in a
challenge trade? Are Jaye?

Speaker 6 (18:21):
Yeah, I'm trying to think of good examples where it
was between two playoff teams, and I guess I'm coming
up blank. I know there were rumors earlier this offseason
about the Red Sox and the Pirates discussing Jared Jones,
and I thought that was really fascinating. But you know,
I suppose, I suppose it's usually not within two teams
computing for the same pennant, right, if I had a guess,

(18:43):
But you know, I really don't have the numbers in
front of me, I can't say for sure.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
Well, I mean, it was just something that came into
my top of my head, and it was like the
last one that I can really remember is the Dumb
and Young for Matt Garza trade, and those were both
teams that were not really close to contention. But you know,
you could argue that the rumored Tristan Cassis for Luis
Castillo trade would be a challenge trade. Let me ask
you that, r JA. If you were the Seattle Mariners

(19:07):
and you have the depth that they have in their
starting rotation, would you consider a trade like that.

Speaker 6 (19:13):
I think you had to think about it for sure.
I mean, cass Is, you know, he's been a pretty
pretty good hitter so far as big ley career. I
think we're talking about what fifteen to twenty percent above
the league average. You know, you'd have to do a
little bit more study on how you fit into that
ballpark because it is a tough hitting environment. And you know,
I guess if I'm trading from my surplus of arms,

(19:34):
I might want someone of more defensive flexibility, have more
optionality for the roster. But you know, if I consider
him to be a sizeable upgrader for who I had internally,
I maybe it wasn't a believer in Tyler Locklear. You know,
some of these ever concerns, and sure, I think that's
something worth thinking about. And you can't ignore the other
potential benefit of a trade like that, which is fringing

(19:56):
up some funds from you know, Chetty Castillo's contract. So
I think it's, you know, a careful castleist. You have
to commit there. But I guess I would certainly not
say no right off the bat.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Yeah, I think it's something that at least has to
be discussed. A lot of people telling me that the
reason that trade really went nowhere is because of the
Red Sox insistence on including Masataki Yoshida and the Mariners
not wanting to pay Yoshida's salary. But you know, I
think that's something that still could be revised too, especially
after the Alex Bragman signing. R J, did you have

(20:26):
a chance to read Mike Petrelio's article on tibo more Park?

Speaker 6 (20:30):
I had not, but I do know that there was
a I think a similar piece earlier this off season
the surface somewhere on the Seattle Mariners fansite I can't
remember the name of the fan side apologizes. Know what's
about the backdrop? Yeah, both hitter backdrop and how it
reached havoc on players, And I thought that was fascinating.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
Yeah, it's really interesting. But I would ask you, r J,
does that Park overrate the starting rotation? Is this a
rotation that you know because you take a look at
the numbers. They were twenty six and strike as on
the road. My whole argument has been you got to
give up runs and you got to give up contact somewhere,
so it was more likely to be against good teams
on the road. But does the park slightly overrate this

(21:12):
rotation or is it as good as that we as
Seattle Amerra fans, we want it to be.

Speaker 6 (21:17):
Yeah, I would say, I mean, look, both teams have
to play at the same ballpark, right, you know, I
off the course you're on. So I think it's probably
fair to say that the pitchers are benefiting from the
same factors, the same dynamics that causes the offense to
underperform at home. Now, you know, over eight can be
kind of a loaded term because you know, what do
we you know, what's the what's the base here? Because

(21:39):
you know, for the most part, they're playing their games
at that ballpark. And I don't want to like suggest
that any of these players are not good or anything
like that, but I think it's fair to say they've
benefit from their home park the same way you know,
Boston hitters benefit from playing at Finway or just said,
you know, you just missioned Bregmant. I mean, you look
at him, and he's someone who has greatly benefited from

(21:59):
his home bar park during the time of Houston, especially
with his power numbers. So I think that's this kind
of natural and I think it's probably fair to say that, Yeah,
they do benefit a little bit from T Mobile over under.

Speaker 3 (22:11):
On Alex Bragman forty doubles off the wall by the
way in Finwick.

Speaker 6 (22:16):
I hope he is at least forty because he's gonna
have to make up for the lack of home run
last I looked at the Stackgrounds numbers and he would
have seventy fewer career home runs if he played his
entire career at Finway. Wow, that's pretty tough to make
up for, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (22:29):
Yeah, it sure is. And I'll ask you this too,
just because you know, there was some talk about Seattle being,
you know, not really contenders for Bregman, but a guy
who would make sense just because they got such little
production from third base man was bringing back Jorge Polanco.
Do you believe in a bounce back for Polanco in
twenty twenty five.

Speaker 6 (22:48):
See, I was really high on that acquisition last year.
I thought he was a sneaky, good player. He just
needed to stay healthy and unfortunately, I don't really know
what went wrong for him last year. I guess he
has to be better because I lost the talent, you
know what I mean, Like, I have to believe he's
going to be better, but you know, I can't sit

(23:08):
here and promise it. I don't know what his physicals
look like, you know what I mean, Like maybe his
body just reached the tipping point.

Speaker 3 (23:14):
I don't know. Yeah, And that's the thing about Poloco's
that he has been on the injured list an awful lot.
And I think that's one of the reasons why. You know,
there's lots of interest apparently the Yankees, the Astros, apparently
the Nationals also making phone calls there. But I think
there's a reason that he's settling for a one year
proved deal. R Jie Anderson joining us on the Beacon
plumbing hotline. Cole Young, the Mariners obviously have a very

(23:37):
good farm system, but most of these guys were talking
about twenty twenty six, twenty twenty seven, there has been
some talk about Cole Young potentially being a contributor. Are
you a fan of young skill set and do you
believe he could be a guy who helps in twenty
twenty five.

Speaker 6 (23:52):
Yeah, I mean, I'm very high on that Mariner's farm system.
You know, young Emerson, some of the ever names there,
And you know, it's one of the things that frustrat me,
right because they have such a good forum for them.
They've done such a good job drafting and developing these players,
and you just want them to apply the finishing touches
to the big league rosster and go out there and
compete for a pennant. But yeah, I suppose it's possible
that he can contribute in twenty twenty five. I guess

(24:15):
maybe the same for Emerson, you know, if he really
has a good showing to begin the season. But yeah,
I certainly wouldn't rule it out, depending on how you know,
the big league team performs and how he performs.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
How about Harry Ford, one of the more volatile I
think prospects in the system, all the talent in the world,
but hasn't quite put it together. Do you think that
he could be a contributor in twenty twenty five?

Speaker 6 (24:36):
I would probably say no, just because I think that
they need to take their time with him. You know,
catchers are notoriously slow to develop, and you know he
you know, he needed to evolve the time right, like
I think, in my eyes was not He's not realistically
going to be a big contributor this season. Maybe in
twenty twenty six, but I think that they really need
to get that one right unlock its full potential. So

(24:58):
my guess is, yeah, he's more of a next guy.

Speaker 3 (25:00):
Do you think he can play in the outfield assuming
that the Mariners, who it's no guarantee that they're going
to get it done, but if cal Rawley was to
sign that long term extension, it seems like he'd be
the guide. Is he athletic enough for the outfield in
your opinion?

Speaker 7 (25:13):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (25:13):
Absolutely absolutely. I think the bigger question there would be,
you know, if he has moved to the outfield, what
does that do for his overall value? Because I think
he's good enough bitter, but I think it's a much
better bat behind the plate than it would be in
left or right field. But athleticism wise, yeah, think he's
absolutely going to be, you know, a pretty good outfielder.

Speaker 3 (25:32):
I think Chris Crawford and for Ian for Ness joined
by R. J. Anderson on the Beacon plumbing Hotline RJ
your rankings on CBS Sports for the MLB Draft launched today.
Excuse me, words are hard. That is a really interesting
time for the Seattle Mariner fans in terms of the draft,
because you're talking about one of the best farm systems
in baseball and they look into the third pick, and

(25:54):
I'll just ask you right off the top, there's years
where it's better to have the third pick than others.
Is this one of the yes?

Speaker 6 (26:02):
So the answer I would give is sort of, because
on the one hand, the scouts that I talk to
you consider this to be a four player draft at
the top, so in theory, you're guaranteed one of those
four players. The reason I say sort of instead of
yes is because, well, you know, three of those four
players have serious question marks associated with them. So I

(26:23):
guess it just depends on your perspective. I mean, you know,
if you could promise me that some of these players
take a step forward and address their weaknesses, that say, yeah,
it's going to be a great year for you, you know,
the number three picker. Unfortunately, I can't promise that. So
it just depends on your perspective. It depends on your
belief and these talents.

Speaker 3 (26:41):
So I'll ask you to give me the quick two
minute rundown of those big foward those guys that Seattle
Mariner fan should really be paying attention to this spring.

Speaker 6 (26:51):
Yeah, so let's just start with Jamie Arnold. He's a
left hand pitcher from Ford State. He's the number one
player on my board. He's got some really good fastball.
He's got a lighter that's really good. He throws strikes.
He's produced in college. I think he checked all the boxes.
He's better than Hagen Smith was this time last year.
I had a guy I really trust, but him ahead
of where Paul Schemes was heading into his gap year. Now,

(27:13):
the caveat is the scheme. The caveat there is the
Schemes added in elite pitch right after turning pro. Let's
not you know, let's not anyone you're talking about where
Schemes was when he first went to Alis late man.

Speaker 4 (27:28):
I got that on the record.

Speaker 6 (27:32):
Then we have Ethan Holland and who he may have
heard of his father, he may have heard of his brother.
He is a sort of fops last third baseman from Oklahoma.
He's a high schooler, really strong, lived handed that at
the same time, they're concerns about his zone contact rate,
so we'll see if he can, you know, tighten that
up a little bit at the Spring Worlds. In the

(27:53):
summer you have Jsbolett. He's now sitting from Texas, A
and M I think Aaron Judge, but at a college
level which he hit for a lot of power. He
walks a lot, and he swings and missus a ton.
How exactly that courts to the professional ranks is to
be seen, So there is risks there as well. Many
of Tyler Bremer. He's a righty from a Santa Barbara,
really really good change up. Might be the best individual

(28:15):
pitch in this class. Scout, do you have some concerns though,
because so much of his game is based on getting
batter to chase outside of his own and he's doing
against sub quality competition, So the pot as well will
just be as effective against pro level hitters. We don't
know the answer. We won't know the answer for a
few years. So that's basically the top four. And then
if you're wanting a dark horse, he might jump into that.

(28:37):
Eli Willits. You might remember his father, Reggie Willett. Sure
he used to play pro ball. He is pretty dynamic shortstop. Again,
he has a chance to kind of jump into that
top tier between now in July.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
Now, real quick, there is a local guy who has
gotten some top five talk, but kind of a volatile guy.
Xavier Nian's talk to us real quick about his chances
of being a high draft pick.

Speaker 6 (28:58):
He leaves strength, but he really needs to prove. But
you know, he's had a couple of rough summers, but
a couple of years ago he looked like one of
the top eased the top five picks in the straft.
So we'll just see what he does this year.

Speaker 3 (29:08):
He has a chance, though, real quick, you got to
pick one team to win the AOST right now? Who's
winning the American League?

Speaker 1 (29:15):
West Seattle?

Speaker 3 (29:17):
Hey, how about that way?

Speaker 4 (29:20):
Are you for real? Are you being nice to us
because it's Valentine's Day?

Speaker 6 (29:24):
No, I think we have the greatest capacity for growth internally,
and I think that goes a long way when you
have injuries and who knows what's going on, you know,
trade wise, all that good stuff. Yeah, I actually think
I picked Seattle right now?

Speaker 3 (29:38):
Well, I guess I got to send that check earlier
than I was going to my friend because we needed
that We needed to hear some optimism because we've been
awfully frustrated by this off season, but never frustrated talking
to you, R. Jay. Really appreciate you taking the time,
and I'm sure we'll be doing it again soon, my

Speaker 4 (30:49):
Chris, have you been there? Because if not, I'm gonna
have to take you all.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
I'd love to go.

Speaker 4 (30:53):
It's so cool.

Speaker 5 (30:54):
Well, the thing is also people think Honda, they think cars,
right sure, and then not everybody knows what Kboda is,
but when they hear about because they do all this
large equipment, but they also have anything that you could
possibly need for whatever, landscaping, yard stuff, everything.

Speaker 4 (31:14):
It was funny. Ian and I went there together and.

Speaker 5 (31:16):
He just I was like, Okay, I'm gonna head to
the studio. Lost him for a half an hour. He
was so excited. And you know he lives in a house.
You don't need to own a farm to know that area.
Like what you get from them. So and also they're coops, so.

Speaker 3 (31:30):
Gokok's well, there you go. I won't say the last part,
but I will definitely agree that sounds like an amazing thing.

Speaker 4 (31:38):
It was like a good family owned players.

Speaker 3 (31:40):
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Uh. Speaking of beautiful, the United States
mollywopped Finland last night six to one game that got
off to a kind of slow start, won nothing Finland
and then the United States with those Kitchuk brothers and boys.
It weird rooting for those guys, right, I know, so weird,
but also so cool. This is the first time they've

(32:02):
ever played together.

Speaker 4 (32:03):
And it's that alone. That's enough for me.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
And you know what I said, it added to the tally.
I think that this has been a ton of fun
to watch. Now it's only been two games, and I
will admit that I have gotten oversaturated with All Star games.
It just haven't been a whole heck of a lot
of fun to watch. I think this format is so
much better and seeing not only playing for your country,

(32:31):
which is great, but seeing that a game actually matters,
not the MLB All Star this time it counts bs,
but actual you know, playing for pride of your country
and also seeing the very best in a break in
the middle of the season. This is how it should
be done.

Speaker 4 (32:47):
Is it's not an exhibition?

Speaker 5 (32:49):
You know? And I yeah, I wanted to know, you know,
looking forward from your opinion whether or not this enhances
your investment into watching the Olympics in the future, because
it did for me. Where you get this mid season
professional break that it actually matters and you are playing
for your country. I was saying to Andrews yesterday that
or the day before that for me, I really only

(33:13):
watched soccer during the World Cup. Sure, I really, you know,
and so there's just so many different layers. I watch
the Sounders when I can, but it's not as much
of an investment. And I apologize. I love the team,
I love the people that work there, and I think
they're awesome. I love Jordan Morris, but they've played for
so many different things it's crazy, and so it's hard

(33:34):
for me to follow. So for a time investment, I'm
not as into it. But give me the World Cup
and I'm totally in. And I was only living out
here a year when the Olympics were up in Vancouver,
and I in twenty ten and I went up there
for the USA not the finals, but the USA Canada
round robin match and I loved it.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
Oh it's amazing and I definitely enhances my enjoyment. I'm
curious what everyone else thinks. Send text four nine four
five to one on the tellermore dude, text line, what's
the game time?

Speaker 4 (34:06):
Tully time? And it is Friday. We should have some
Tully in here.

Speaker 3 (34:09):
Oh my goodness, Grace, that's had them hot Toddy Hello
like this?

Speaker 5 (34:13):
Yeah, I know I had a little stuff. Notice this
morning I could have used a hot Toddy.

Speaker 3 (34:18):
Oh that is a great cure for anything that ails
you for sure.

Speaker 5 (34:22):
Oh, you can just fake it, but I think just
feeling better because you have Tullimore.

Speaker 3 (34:26):
Perfect, absolutely perfect. And we'll ask We've got Danny O'Neil
coming on at two five, we'll ask him if he's
enjoying this, if he's paying attention to this stuff. But
I will tell you, like, this is close to the
World Baseball Classic.

Speaker 4 (34:41):
For me, Like the World base makes sense though.

Speaker 3 (34:43):
For sure, And unfortunately baseball teams are not going to
do this in the middle of the season. It's just
not going to happen. And it's unfortunate that we've had
some serious injuries because of the World Baseball Classic, Edwin
Diaz unfortunately tearing his ac holse celebrating a win in
that and the whole Oh, they're just the worst, especially
in games that don't count for your favorite team, you know,

(35:07):
and you know you can argue Team USA is your
favorite team. But if you're a Kraken fan, this is
also interesting. I'm curious on this text line as well.
Do you want Capocaco to play? Do you want him
to risk injury because he's not only a huge part
of their long term future, but if you have any
shot of making the postseason. I don't think they do.
But if you have any shot of.

Speaker 5 (35:26):
Doing it, there's a chance.

Speaker 6 (35:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (35:29):
It's very much the the Lloyd Christmas. So you're saying
there's a chance territory, but it's still there. And I
also just want to see this guy build chemistry with
Shane Wright and with Matti Beneer's and with the rest
of these young players as well. So I'm curious, do
you want to see him play? Because on one hand,
it stinks not to see him play. On the other hand,
it's nice to see him not get hurt. On the

(35:50):
other hand, three hands, somehow we would love to see
him get a chance to play with some of the
better players and against some of that better competition. So
there's a lot of sides to this. If you had
to pick one All Star Game, Jess, which one is
number one for you?

Speaker 2 (36:04):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (36:04):
Man, It's kind of subjective because when I actually went
to the All Star Game when it was here in Seattle,
just that experience alone makes me like, but I do
not watch the All Star Game on television for baseball,
I just don't watch it. D NBA is a dunk contest, trying.

Speaker 4 (36:25):
Yeah, it would have to be. I don't like them.

Speaker 5 (36:31):
The Pro Bowl I actually used to watch until turn
into Patty KG and now it's just the Pro Bowl games.
But I used to watch it just because there was
that we're just waiting for the Super Bowl. There was
that void of needing football, NFL football, so I used
to like it. I don't watch that at all anymore.
So this is the best. This is the best ones
the four nations right now as things stand, is my

(36:54):
favorite one, and then NBA would be second.

Speaker 3 (36:57):
Might be darning with fame praise, but I think I
would go there as well. You know who deserves a
lot of praise. Jenny O'Neil the dag Apostrophe joins us.

Speaker 7 (39:27):
But you need to stop lying.

Speaker 3 (39:30):
You just take the compliment. Man, there's so many.

Speaker 7 (39:35):
I'm not even a legend in my own mind.

Speaker 3 (39:37):
Well, you know you gotta we gotta work on that.

Speaker 4 (39:40):
There hu people.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
There are so many people at this station who cannot
take a compliment. And I refuse to let you be
one of those people, my friend, right because Softy anytime
I say anything nice to him, Man, it's just ridiculous.
How are you liking this weather?

Speaker 7 (39:57):
Well, it's the weather is absolutely I'm not okay with winter.
I don't mind winners. I go headlong into winters, so
I'm not going to complain. I'm also someone who is
an all wheel drive kind of person, though, and I
don't have much experience. I don't have as much experience
as I like to pretend I have sure and dry

(40:18):
driving in snow because I was I was born in
the faral half of Oregon. But I have I do
have a little bit of unwarranted pride, like I like
to think of myself as a good driver in the snow.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
It's fair, that's fair.

Speaker 7 (40:31):
I do not.

Speaker 3 (40:32):
And I made the drive from Shelton today and was,
even with the roads perfectly clear, I was still saying
a few hil Mary's. That's that Catholic guilt's built into
me as well. Though, you just age you have to
have that as well, I will ask you, though, Danny,
spring training coming up? Is that a time that you like.
Is spring training something where you can turn on the
optimism and you know, accept the compliments maybe more easily

(40:54):
when you're out in Peoria or in that area covering,
or is spring training something you're just looking to get
over with so the can go watch some regular season
baseball games.

Speaker 7 (41:03):
I love spring training. I think one of these single
greatest sounds on this fantastic planet is the sound of
metal cleats scraping across concrete as players walk out of
the headquarters and onto the field. I think. I think
the renewal that comes with spring training and the fact
that even even someone who is fairly pessimistic about about

(41:26):
things regarding our our hometown nine which i am, I
will I will fully immerse myself in the optimism and
excitement that is spring training.

Speaker 3 (41:34):
Do you have a favorite spring training park?

Speaker 7 (41:38):
Ah? So, I like the Old I really loved the
Old Giants Park in Scottsdale.

Speaker 3 (41:45):
Me too.

Speaker 7 (41:47):
I think that that is one of the absolute best.
But I I'm of the opinion that there aren't that
many bad parts and when when you're down there, because
it's one of those times where it doesn't even really
matter how closely you're watching the action. You can tune
in and tune out. You can generally approximate do the

(42:09):
players have, are their numbers? Are they in the fifties?
I probably don't need to pay as much attention to
them as it's going forward, but just the overall experience.
But I would say, if you ask me for my favorite,
I haven't spent that much time in Florida spring training though,
so I feel like I'm a halfist. I only really
know the cactus leep.

Speaker 5 (42:30):
Well.

Speaker 3 (42:30):
It's funny because what I was going to say is
I would agree with you there aren't very many bad
In fact, I would only say, and it's only because
the area Maryville would be the one that I would
not recommend people check out if you can avoid Meryville.
But Florida is not so great. Florida has some pretty
bad ballparks, and it's because it's older. And I've made
this prediction with a few of my baseball writer friends.

(42:51):
At some point, everybody is going to be in Arizona.
It's going to be convincing the Yankees and Red Sox
to make that move. But at some point I think
everybody is going to be in Arizona, and I don't
hate that. I think it would be kind of fun too,
to have all thirty teams playing in that area.

Speaker 7 (43:08):
I really like it if everybody accept the Yankees, and
you saw you could actually see how long they they
until they gave in and decided we have to go too,
because those are the two franchises in general that they
have a hard time getting over themselves. I mean, they

(43:29):
do believe that the sport revolves around them, so they
would fully be the only two teams down there, and
I'm like, yeah, it still works for us. We like
it here, so I would tend to agree with you.
It would. It makes more sense for a lot of reasons.
But you had the Steinberners for years who were so
entrenched in Florida. So but yeah, spring training is awesome.

Speaker 3 (43:53):
It's the best. And I really do recommend anybody who
can make the pilgrimage down do it at least once.
Go get some in and out out. Don't stay at
that Liaquinta that I was telling every ar you there,
I said it wrong this time, Lakina, Yeah yourself, that's
what it is. It's that Catholic guilt may caing me
doubt it. It's but it's something that I think everybody
has to do. Once you talked about some not such

(44:17):
positive feelings about the Mariners, Uh, Danny, why would that be?

Speaker 7 (44:22):
Well, So I think they've got a shot at being good.
I do. I don't. I have a hard time believing
they'll win one hundred games with this lineup, but I
can totally see n I can also see the bottom
dropping out here yes season because they don't have a
lot of depth in the lineup, and whenever you're banking

(44:43):
on pitching, pitching is a fragile thing, and a couple
injuries can dramatically change the trajectory of how that goes.
So I'm I'm not a doomsayer that feels, oh, this
season is cursed. They've got a shot to be good.
The problem is that they should be in position where
we know they're going to be good and maybe great,

(45:04):
and they simply didn't add the bat or maybe bat
and a half that they needed to to make that happen.
And that's disappointing. It feels like they're wasting an opportunity
where they really could just put their foot down and
go for it, and instead we're kind of crossing our
fingers and hoping that some marginal upgrades and maybe that

(45:28):
you have a bounce back from Jorge Polanco when he's
at third base and Solano is this underrated person, and
that oh, Luke Rayley is exactly what he looked like
last year, and one of the Mitches bounced back, and
it really should be a situation where you feel like
they are right in their championship window, and it just
doesn't feel that way.

Speaker 3 (45:47):
No, And it's the volatility that concerns the hecatomy too,
is just and you know, wasting this rotation. And I
know there's been a lot of articles written about how
maybe this rotation is being helped by this ballpark. The
eye test tells me how good this one through five is.
And I'll take Emerson Hancock as my sixth starter as well.
I love this bullpen, feel great about center field, I
feel great about catcher. I just wish I felt great

(46:10):
about anywhere else. It's the whole, my whole thing, and
it's gonna be. You know, you talked about Luke Rayley.
I think he's one of the more interesting stories because
you take away two months, and of course taking away
two months is, you know, not a feasible thing. He
was one of the better offensive players in the American League,
and I feel like maybe we're not giving him quite

(46:32):
enough credit as a potential middle of the order hitter.
Would you agree with that?

Speaker 7 (46:36):
Yes, that said, that's also the hope that can curse
you this time of year, and I would throw Robless
in that category as well. Robluss is this incredibly high
profile prospect never quite pound panned out in Washington, right,
and he looked like a good player for them last year.

(46:56):
If both of those guys, if there was a turn
that has been made in their careers, that if what
they did last year is something that they can repeat
this year, it is a huge It changes the trajectory
of the season. The problem is, and this is where
every year you go into it and you had a

(47:17):
guy that had a bad season last year and you're like, oh,
he's going to bounce back this year. And then in
those cases where you had a guy that performed and
maybe a clip that he had not previously performed at,
you're like, oh, he's turned the corner. And sometimes he
had a good year and he's going to go back
to normal. But I would agree. I love the way

(47:39):
Luke Graley plays too. He's enormous. He's just this big
ball of muscle. I don't think I've enjoyed any player
bunting more than Luke Raley. And you're right, if you
take his season last year and he's able to replicate that,
and if he could excise out those two months where
it was a little less successful, yeah, man, like see, absolutely,

(48:03):
if they had a bopper at first base, that would
change a lot.

Speaker 3 (48:05):
Sure, yeah, I mean it's been all due respect to Typhrance,
but since the middle of the twenty twenty two season,
it's just not been a position. They've got a ton
of production from Denie O'Neil joining us. Let's switch the
football real quick. By the way, when is the end
of when you can talk about the Super Bowl? Because
obviously that was the most recent sporting event in terms

(48:26):
of football, But when are you no longer allowed to
talk about that game?

Speaker 7 (48:32):
Well, I believe that you can in perpetuity talk about
what a sucker grat is on least part of the
Super Bowl. I think, I think in discussing and discussing
how well put together Philadelphia is. Sure, I don't think
that there is a statute of limitations on that. Yeah,
maybe maybe it's like for three days you can you

(48:55):
can beat up on the Kansas City offensive line. Yeah,
and talk about that after the three days, maybe maybe
that's done, Like maybe we beat on that dead horse sufficiently.
But there's there's a lot to talk about, including Jalen Hurts.
It's so interesting because there were so many great quarterbacks
this year and Lamar Jackson had one of the best

(49:17):
seasons I've ever seen. Same player, Josh Allen was phenomenal.
Patrick Mahomes he was not as great as he's been,
but I think that we saw just how much heavy
lifting he did to get that team that that was.
That was not a super Bowl roster and certainly not
a super Bowl quality offensive line. Yet Patrick Mahomes got

(49:40):
them there and got them through to the number one
seed because he's so good, and Jalen Hurts kind of
shows that it isn't it isn't always the team with
the best quarterback that ends up winning. It's the team
with the quarterback who fits what his team does best,
and that's that's Jalen Hurts. Man. He runs, He's a strong,
powerful runner. He throws the deep ball, well enough and

(50:02):
is enough of a threat throwing and that was that
was an all time performance that he put together.

Speaker 3 (50:08):
He was so good And I hate that he had
that interception because I think it really skewed how well
he played and that was you know, it was a
nice play by Brian Crook Cook on the diving play
just ball that should have been thrown out of bounds
for sure, But like, it's so interesting you bring that
up in like Joe Burrow putting together of sensational seasons,
There's so many haves and have nots, and I can't
help but think about the Seattle Seahawks, the most volatile

(50:31):
I think Seattle athlete in a long time in Geno Smith,
Like with Clint Kubiak coming in, do you get the
feeling and obviously not asking you to go back and
watch every game that Clint Kubiak coached. I, well, you know,
I might do that for you. I might send you
some Venmo and ask you to do that. But like,
what do you think Gino Smith is the fit for
this offense.

Speaker 7 (50:53):
He's better than anything else they can get right now,
right I believe that he is a better than average
starting quarterback in the NFL. Which in my opinion, I
am not one of those people who was afraid of
paying an average quarterback prominent starting starters money. I don't

(51:14):
think that teams fail to win because they spend too
much on their quarterback. I think they fail to win
because they don't have good quarterbacks. Is he going to
be someone that can be as good as Jalen Hurts.
I would say that that's probably unlikely, but I absolutely
think you can win playoff games with Gino Smith. It's
my belief they should be keeping him, and I do

(51:36):
think that they need to be actively looking for a
younger quarterback to develop, i e. Somebody in the draft.
But I don't have a lot of uncertainty or worry
about the idea of extending Gino Smith or paying him
a raise on what he's making, because I think he's
a pretty good player and he certainly wasn't what held
them back this past offseason. You asked about Quint Kubiak.

(52:00):
The start of this season was really interesting because of
how good New Orleans offense was right with Derek are
Right and the way that they started off. It was
not an offense that people expected an awful lot out of,
and it was really good to start the season, so
I'm pretty interested to see I think this this seems

(52:23):
like it has a much better chance of working and
giving Mike McDonald what he wants than last year's pairing. Does.
I think. I do feel that they're in better shape
than they were this time a year ago. But I
also think that you might find yourself kind of in
the same spot where Seattle's good enough to make the playoffs,

(52:43):
but I'm not sure if they're going to be in
position and if they are able to get over the hump,
it's going to because the defense is significantly better.

Speaker 3 (52:49):
So, speaking of getting over the hump, and when Jess
told me I was going to talk to you today,
I was giddy because I think you're a perfect person
for this question. So be Carol. He's coaching the Las
Vegas Raiders, and I think everyone in the area that
I've talked to is really excited about it and is
really rooting for him to do well. You know, there
may be some media members who disagree a little bit,

(53:12):
but I think most people think that they're hoping for
the best with this. But I've seen some reports about
a potential reunion between Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson. And
my question for you is, Danny, will Seattle fans root
for the Las Vegas Raiders if Pete Carroll is coaching
Russell Wilson in twenty twenty five, That'd be really interesting,

(53:35):
wouldn't it.

Speaker 7 (53:39):
My gut reaction is that Russell going there would lessen
the hope that people have for the Raiders to succeed.

Speaker 3 (53:48):
That's true.

Speaker 7 (53:48):
I think if Pete wins there, I think you're right.
I think people are going to feel good about it.
If it's with Russ, I think that could change it
a little bit. But in both cases, Seattle decided to
turn the page, right. I know Russ asked for a trade,

(54:10):
and there was definitely like he forced that situation. But
I think in both cases, I don't know, it'd be interesting.
You'd probably start to now now that you mention it,
you'd probably start to get a situation where people would
start asking, hey, should these two guys be here in Seattle?
That probably probably who it would be most uncomfortable for

(54:32):
is not even Mike McDonald so much as John Schneider.

Speaker 3 (54:35):
If that happened, Oh gosh, yeah, that's great point.

Speaker 7 (54:38):
But my but my initial reaction is I think that
would be tougher for people to swallow if Pete is
winning with Russ.

Speaker 3 (54:46):
You know, I was thinking about this as you were talking,
what if it's Tyler Lockett with Russell Wilson, because you
know a lot of talk about Tyler Rocket potentially being
a cap casualty. Maybe it does that adding the three
of them together maybe change that a little bit.

Speaker 7 (55:00):
H hmmm. So I think people love Tyler, but and this, this,
this is me sort of maybe I'm too pragmatic with
these things. I think everybody understands that the move that
really needs to be made there, and unless Tyler is

(55:20):
going to stay at a significant discount from what he's
playing at, that it doesn't make sense to continue paying
him at that rate. Because he's there, he's their third receiver,
and really you're probably trying to hope to develop someone
who's got a little bit of a different skill set
to to catch more balls than Tyler if he's back

(55:43):
on the team next year. So I don't think. I
don't think Tyler's presence there would shift it. Now if
they traded for DK Metcalf, that that might be DK Metcalf,
But I think everything that we've seen from how the
white receiver market is shaking up and the number of
guys that could be moving. Sure, that makes it, in

(56:06):
my mind, significantly less likely that that dk Metcalf would
be moved.

Speaker 3 (56:10):
Yeah, I just can't see it. I can't see it
this year anyway, Danny O'Neil joining us. I want to
end with this, So we talked about Clint Kubiak, Seahawks
obviously talking about their commitment to running the football, bringing
in a run game coordinator for the first time, and
I think four years something along those lines. I want
to point you a scenario where John Schnyder for the

(56:32):
first time, spends you know, they make the cap casualties,
and they bring in two quality offensive linemen and you're
picking eighteenth and Ashton Genty is on the board. Would
you take Ashton Genty with the eighteenth pick? No?

Speaker 1 (56:48):
No more running backs.

Speaker 9 (56:51):
No more running backs getting drafted, Chris And in fact,
you probably shouldn't say it out loud because John light
and it doesn't take much prodding to get him to
spend a top end draft pick on running backs.

Speaker 1 (57:03):
No more?

Speaker 10 (57:06):
Are you Shotpenny and then Kenneth Walker and this Zach
Sharbonay I am very much of the opinion that you
don't need to use high end draft picks to get
quality running backs. Now you can win, And I'm not
going to say you should never do it, and certainly

(57:26):
the impact that Saquon Barkley had in moving to.

Speaker 7 (57:29):
The Eagles, but actually that move would be the kind
of thing that I would say, you're better off getting
a running back when everything else is set on your team.
Running Backs they're dependent on scheme and they're dependent on
dudes to open it up. So you had me right
there with you when you were talking about maybe finally
going out and spending some money on an offensive lineman.

(57:51):
But no, if they do that, they should absolutely not
draft a running back.

Speaker 3 (57:55):
Jessamine, you know that that was just completely teed up
for us to record that and to play it for
his Hall of Fame career.

Speaker 5 (58:03):
Right, I have it ready ready to go. But I
also understand where Dana's coming out.

Speaker 3 (58:08):
Oh, he's one hundred percent right, Yeah, it would be.
I just can't help but wonder because he's such a
to me, you know, as a guy who's covered college football,
who's covered the NFL draft a special prospect, I don't
think he's gonna be there. In fact, I don't think
Pete Carroll's going to be able to pass on him,
Like if they go sign a quarterback, I don't think
Pete Carroll will be able to say, you, we cannot
have this guy on our roster. Like, I just don't

(58:31):
think it's gonna happen. I don't think he's gonna be there.
But I'm glad you said it because the Kenneth Walker
pick the Zach Charbona pick are two of the most
frustrating selections because it's nothing against them. It's just whenever
you take running backs that high, they have to be elite,
like beyond ely and if you took Ashton Gent with
the eighteenth pick, he has to be an All Pro

(58:51):
player for a very very long time. But I also
needed to hear that reaction, Danny.

Speaker 7 (58:58):
But do what you were looking for. No, I am absolutely,
I am out. I am out on drafting in the
first or the second round. You fits and sixth round pictures.

Speaker 10 (59:09):
Kenny McIntosh looks great.

Speaker 4 (59:12):
Yes, go related Koog's his brother Dean.

Speaker 3 (59:17):
Oh, that's right, that it's correct, Danny. Promote all the
good stuff that you're doing on yourself. Stack my friend,
I do have a newsletter.

Speaker 7 (59:24):
It's called the dang Apostrophe because I continue to hang
around despite having moved elsewhere. You can subscribe very easily
by going to Danny O'Neill dot com. You enter your
email and you get emails from me.

Speaker 6 (59:35):
It's that simple.

Speaker 3 (59:36):
That's awesome stuff. When you talk to you next week,
tell him I did okay.

Speaker 7 (59:39):
All right you you sound absolutely fantastic. I love the confidence.

Speaker 3 (59:44):
Chris, thank you, my friend. Well check in on your
text next spots Rato ninety three point three KJRFMO.

Speaker 4 (59:54):
This is Valentine's Yeah, I kind of went on.

Speaker 5 (59:58):
I figured this would take a the fancies of those
who fancy Valentine's Day.

Speaker 3 (01:00:03):
Uh are you a Valentine's Chocolate person?

Speaker 5 (01:00:06):
No, but I do highly recommend doing February fifteenth celebration
when it all goes fifty percent off.

Speaker 3 (01:00:12):
Well, there you go, there you go.

Speaker 5 (01:00:15):
Now, I'm more of a savory than a sweet person anyway.

Speaker 4 (01:00:18):
So but yeah, go tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (01:00:20):
And the beauty of this being on Friday night is
that you have the all weekend chocolate shop.

Speaker 3 (01:00:26):
Beautiful Chris Crawford and for Ian forness, Thanks so much
to Danny for giving us that great sound quote at
the very end. I really appreciate that.

Speaker 5 (01:00:33):
We do like to call that chum in the water
here on this show with the in forness.

Speaker 3 (01:00:39):
Yeah, no, he's the best. He is simply one of
my favorite people. Hey, speaking of simply, I do want
to think simply Seattle. They have helped me a lot.
They have helped a lot of people with great clothes
and great stuff that you can get for a great price.
And if you use code Molly want fifteen m O
L L Y who get fifteen percent? Doesn't matter if

(01:01:02):
you're buying for the Mariners, doesn't matter if you're buying
for the Seahawks. To crack in the Sounders. I am
literally geared up in simply Seattle stuff. If they saw jeans,
i'd buy them from them too, But that everything else
is pretty much simply Seattle. And you know, I know, Jesse,
you're a big fan of them as well. But I
can't thank them for the support enough. I think I'm
gonna have a really cool announcement involving them pretty soon.

(01:01:23):
I wish I could make it now, but I can't.
Just just to be safe, but simply Seattle, we really
appreciate all of that good stuff we're doing.

Speaker 5 (01:01:32):
I wore my cream Seahawks throwback sweater. You know, it's
got the old the old school logos on it and everything,
the NFC on the shoulder, the old school logo on
the other side, and it's the cream colored one.

Speaker 4 (01:01:46):
But I have to say, because it's cream.

Speaker 5 (01:01:48):
Colored, I am the quintessential person that people don't lend
white clothes to. I've washed it so many times because
I have to, and I get dirty, you know, I
spill coffee and stuff like that.

Speaker 4 (01:02:01):
It holds up so good.

Speaker 5 (01:02:04):
Not just a great price, but the quality of their
clothing is everything just stays. And that one's been washed
probably like ten times since I've owned it, and it
is still good, didn't shrink bed and I just I
highly recommend their their clothing.

Speaker 3 (01:02:21):
I cannot recommend them enough, especially when there's another clothing
company that does not do such a great job in
my personal opinion, with that stuff. It's very nice to
be able to get great stuff from simply Seattle. We've
got some great.

Speaker 4 (01:02:33):
Texts we do. We do.

Speaker 5 (01:02:35):
I'm going to keep us going with this Valentine's Day theme.
Let's actually go with our talk back first, because we
have a tradition with listener Greg right here, who happens
to have a double celebration.

Speaker 3 (01:02:47):
That's great.

Speaker 11 (01:02:48):
Hey, jethlemen, Hey Chris, love the show. This is Greg
and Huntington Beach. Happy Valentine's to you both. And Happy
Valentine's Day to my lovely wife and mother of our children, Tanya.
And happy birthday, Tanya.

Speaker 3 (01:03:05):
I call every year.

Speaker 11 (01:03:06):
I love that you guys do this. It's a milestone
birthday for my lovely wife. So I'm not going to
say which one because I want to stay Mary, but
I love you bid Happy birthday, Happy Valentine's Day.

Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
That just warms the cockles of my heart. Like that's
that's what it's all about.

Speaker 4 (01:03:21):
It is, it's about the one that you love. I
love that line in there. I'm like, good call Man,
good call Greg.

Speaker 5 (01:03:27):
Yeah, that's just milestones are nothing but a number that
you don't say. Up.

Speaker 3 (01:03:34):
All right, let's read some texts.

Speaker 5 (01:03:36):
Yes, let's go, Okay, here we go. Let's start with
the two h six. Mister Crawford. I feel like I
was just reading like the TUTSI pole TUTSI roll Pope
commercial mister owl. Mister Crawford, can you please explain why
the Mariners didn't pull the trigger on Luis Castillo for Trystan.

Speaker 4 (01:03:56):
Is it Cassas? That's what okay?

Speaker 5 (01:04:00):
I knew it was Cassis, But I just wonder, and
that Japanese DH, who's hit on average two eighty over
the last two years, outside of being a cheap ownership group,
why didn't we do it?

Speaker 3 (01:04:11):
So there are injury concerns with Yoshida, and there are
concerns that he's not going to be able to do
anything but play DH. And look, I get it, the
Mariners have not gotten a lot of production out of
the DH position since Nelson Cruz left. Mitch Garver was
a disaster, Mitch Haniger was a disaster last year as well.
He would certainly be an upgrade. But I can understand

(01:04:34):
at least a little bit not being super interested in
paying I believe, eighteen million dollars a year to somebody
who is going to be limited to DH, who's going
to miss time. Now, if you were giving me the
option of this for as a trade for twenty twenty five,
I take it. I would absolutely take it because I
think it makes them a better team for twenty twenty five.

(01:04:54):
And that's all I really care about is winning while
this team can win. But I can't completely hate, as
the kids say, And I just did quotation marks on
the radio. I knew how I was gonna do.

Speaker 4 (01:05:04):
I do all the time. I think you could tell
with your inflection.

Speaker 3 (01:05:07):
I can at least understand that trade from a perspective.
So we ask people what they were romantic about with sports.
I think our buddy Kathleen has a great answer here.
We watched the Bruno Mars halftime show from our Super
Bowl win on YouTube once in a while. As soon
as it starts, I feel I'm right back to the day.
Brings happiness tears to my eyes. I think that's a

(01:05:29):
great call.

Speaker 4 (01:05:30):
I wouldn't have thought of going back to a halftime show.

Speaker 3 (01:05:33):
Well, no, I wouldn't have either, But that's great. I
will tell you I watched that replay all the time.
You know, everybody asks me about the Katy Perry halftime
show the year after, and I had a therapist to
race that game from my mind. So I can't tell
you one thing about it, not one thing about it.
You can show me all the sharks you want. I
will never remember that Super Bowl. It is the ultimate
eck factor for me, is that Superbowl?

Speaker 4 (01:05:54):
You know what?

Speaker 5 (01:05:55):
Well, yeah, we don't want to ever think about that
part of it. What I do remember leading up to
it is Katy Perry's press conference and one Jim Moore,
who used to work here, yes, telling the it was
like an E host, you know, the E network whatever
entertainment network, but an E host was kind of hogging

(01:06:17):
the first question, and Jim just yelled out from the
back shut up. And all the collective media was at
this press conference. Oh so everyone, for all these national
NFL reporters, all the local NFL reporters just started tweeting
out about how you know, some guy here just told

(01:06:37):
Kevin what's his name to shut up while he's asking
Katy Perry a question. And that was really really one
of my favorite moments of any It wasn't even the
halftime performance. It was a press conference and it of
course I'm sitting there just like shoulders.

Speaker 3 (01:06:54):
Up and down, like m God, bless that that is.

Speaker 4 (01:06:58):
That is hilarious.

Speaker 3 (01:06:59):
God, yes man. Text from the four to two five
It's unfortunate. I'm a Seattle fan. I'm not a sports fan.
I'm a Seattle sports fan. We have nothing to look
forward to for these years. None of these teams are
going anywhere anytime soon. I know that it can happen,
but it's highly unlikely, especially with you know, a bunch
of stuff here that just got cut off. I'm sorry

(01:07:19):
about that. Kraken area probably our best hope. I mean,
I get it, I get it, but I don't I
think there's reason for optimism with all of those teams,
Like I think there's reason for optimism with the Mariners,
and reason to be frustrated. I'm gonna be realistic with
all of this stuff. I think there's reason to be
frustrated with the Seahawks. I think there's very much reason

(01:07:39):
to be frustrated with the Kraken. I think there's reason
to be frustrated with the Storm. You know, you take
a look, oh yeah, you know Jewe Lloyd one of
the best players and unfortunately pretty disgusting stuff sounds like
was why she's not going to be playing for this team.
You know, there's disappointing, there's it's really disappointing. Yeah, but
there's reason for optimism with all that stuff too. It
just kind of depends on the way you're going to
look at it. Somebody text by the way. It's the

(01:07:59):
first time I've ever heard this that I am too
positive because I literally get paid to be Okay, I
want to take fairly critical. I'm paid to be fairly
critical of the Seattle marital organization. There's a reason why
people listen to that show. So it's kind of fun
to uh be called mister optimist. It doesn't happen very much.

(01:08:21):
You're on my side of whatever. That glass that is
ours has more than half.

Speaker 5 (01:08:27):
But it also I get it just because of I
think I said this actually when koton Gren was up
for was a finalist for the Hall of Fame, and
I think we all really thought he was. But I
understood the hesitancy to get excited about it because I said,
Seattle just gets blasted, man, Seattle gets blasted with stuff,

(01:08:49):
and so I feel that. But I still look at
Seahawks even lost the game.

Speaker 4 (01:08:56):
This year, yep, this season, because they don't have one yet.

Speaker 5 (01:08:59):
The Mariners, like you said at the beginning of the show,
they're tied.

Speaker 4 (01:09:02):
With the Dodgers.

Speaker 3 (01:09:02):
They're tied with the Dodgers, and.

Speaker 5 (01:09:04):
You know, the krack and have an opportunity with the
March seventh trade deadline coming up, to build a new team,
and they did trade for Cocko and that was an
unbelievable add to this team. So optimism, I'm there with you.

Speaker 3 (01:09:18):
Speaking of optimism. Final text. I romanticized the return of
the Sonics, the announcement, the anticipation in the first game
at CPA. Often. I can't tell you how much I
agree with that. I think about that game, that very
first game back, and I want it to be against
the Thunder. I wanted to be against the Thunder and
the Sonics to pull off the upset and get that win,

(01:09:40):
because whenever that first win against the Thunder comes is
going to be one of the great sports moments of
my life.

Speaker 4 (01:09:46):
It's going to be great.

Speaker 3 (01:09:47):
Yeah, it's going to be great. Speaking of great, just
kidding softies.

Speaker 12 (01:09:50):
Next, now, this is not the Mandalorian.

Speaker 4 (01:10:06):
I'm Russian things up? Oh a little bit? Okay, Yeah,
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:10:12):
Do you think we should freshen things up by finding
a host who knows when they're supposed to come in
the studio?

Speaker 5 (01:10:17):
Oh? Those are far and few between in this building. Oh,
but he'll get in here.

Speaker 3 (01:10:22):
I think I see an elbow. I think I see
an elbow.

Speaker 4 (01:10:27):
Probably his best polity is the elbow.

Speaker 3 (01:10:29):
Yeah, oh, there's no question about that. There's no question.
By the way, I think the counter was like four.
I think that's pretty good.

Speaker 4 (01:10:37):
You're a yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:10:38):
I think a lot A couple of people texted in
and said, as long as you're not saying fifty.

Speaker 3 (01:10:42):
Well, that's the one I wanted to read too, is
that there were a lot of fifty four percent jokes.
And I guess those are just going to follow Molly Watt,
Monday and Miley.

Speaker 5 (01:10:52):
I mean, it just is right, that's it, just it happens.
And if you're the butt of a joke, the old
jokes are going to keep coming up.

Speaker 3 (01:11:01):
Speaking of butt of jokes, Chris Crawford, how are you man?
I'm good, buddy.

Speaker 8 (01:11:06):
You know what you should do when you fill in.
Not for me to tell you what they hell to do.
But I got some ideas, because that's really what I am.
I'm an idea guy. I am an idea man. Shut up, Jess,
and I'm an idea man. And you know it, you
should go with like all like Christopher Cross, you know,
theme songs like it, you know, ride like the Wind, whatever,

(01:11:26):
anything along that genre. Just kind of make that your thing.
That's what I think you should do. That'd be a
hell of an idea. How about some of an idea?
How about some criss cross?

Speaker 1 (01:11:34):
Yeah, there you go, criss cross, criss cross.

Speaker 3 (01:11:36):
I'll make you mac daddy.

Speaker 4 (01:11:40):
Oh my god, I'm a mac.

Speaker 3 (01:11:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:11:41):
That's way that's way before your time. Yeah, I know,
I didn't realize you're that old. By the way, geez,
are you fifty ed?

Speaker 6 (01:11:47):
Jess?

Speaker 4 (01:11:48):
Not even close?

Speaker 1 (01:11:51):
Anyway? How are you in the city, man.

Speaker 3 (01:11:53):
I'm doing well. It's a happy Valentine's.

Speaker 1 (01:11:56):
Thank you smoochies. What a ripoff Valentine's Day is?

Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
It's kind of a silly one.

Speaker 4 (01:12:03):
But the day after his half priced chocolate Day.

Speaker 8 (01:12:06):
Well, that's why you should wait until tomorrow, or wait
until like Monday when everybody throws their flowers in the garbage,
and go grab them and give them to your wife.
I paid one hundred and fifty bucks for a dozen
roses from my wife.

Speaker 4 (01:12:18):
I mean, wait, does Gina really want Yeah?

Speaker 8 (01:12:21):
Well, okay, I mean she'll say no. But then when
they don't show up, so no roses?

Speaker 3 (01:12:26):
Huh okay, yeah, see how that works. We talked about
things were romantic about in sports, right, what are you
romantic about?

Speaker 1 (01:12:33):
What am I romantic about?

Speaker 8 (01:12:35):
Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters going to games together, Parades.

Speaker 1 (01:12:39):
I love parades. Today is the Eagles Parade.

Speaker 8 (01:12:41):
We're going to replace some of our audio from the
Seahawk Parade from eleven years ago now twenty fourteen. Were
you at that thing by the way downtown Seattle? Cold
as hell's like twenty five degrees freezing? My didn't know
what's off by the way that day. But I said
this on Twitter today and I'll say it again just
for you, but but for nobody else, just for you

(01:13:02):
that I I don't remember waking up in a better
mood that day and knowing that my day was gonna
get better as the day went on.

Speaker 1 (01:13:10):
Right, I was like a baby on a boob the
entire day. It was unfreaking believable.

Speaker 8 (01:13:15):
And I'll say this because it's Valentine's Day, outside of
my wedding day to my lovely wife, I don't think
I've had a happier day in my life than the
day of the Seahawk Parade, because the day of the game.

Speaker 1 (01:13:24):
Itself was stressful as hell. Yeah, oh my god, you wait,
what the hell is going on?

Speaker 5 (01:13:28):
Well?

Speaker 8 (01:13:28):
You know, and then even when they made it twenty
two to nothing, Yeah, I'm thinking as a Seattle Light,
as a as a born and bred Seattle Light.

Speaker 3 (01:13:34):
When it's twenty two nuts, we're gonna blow this. You
can't help We're gonna blow this. I did not feel
confident until it was thirty six nothing.

Speaker 1 (01:13:42):
I'm totally with it, dream curse.

Speaker 3 (01:13:44):
Even when even when Harvin returned a kick, it was like, wait,
they're just gonna get the ball back in this TI.

Speaker 8 (01:13:49):
Thirty six nothing is when I called my dad and
started crying. That's that's when I finally did it. Late
third quarter when Jermaine had that touchdown catch, the pinball
machine catch, bouncing off everybody. Then Baldwin Fire got his
in the fourth quarter. You know, I remember the look
of relief. If you go back and watch that touchdown
from Doug and the fourth he's like.

Speaker 3 (01:14:07):
Thank god, I got one.

Speaker 1 (01:14:08):
Yeah, everybody else has got it. Malcolm Smith has one
and I don't even have one. Everybody's scored.

Speaker 8 (01:14:14):
It's like an Oprah show and I'm the one guy
not getting a prize.

Speaker 1 (01:14:17):
So no, that was a hell of a day, man.

Speaker 8 (01:14:19):
So we're gonna play some of the audio from the
Eagles parade today and then go back and listen to what.

Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
Our things sounded like eleven years ago.

Speaker 3 (01:14:25):
Man, So I had Danny O'Neill on to I know,
I heard, I heard he had a lot of fun
with my Ashton genty y Mark. Could you see it
happening in Seeattle, Like if everything goes their way with
like they signed a couple of very good offensive line,
which I don't think they're going to do so they
have never done. Sure, but if that many teams pass.

(01:14:46):
But you're not in love with the offensive line available
and you're not in love with the Edgers just available?
Could you see it? Like being somewhat realistic.

Speaker 8 (01:14:53):
Well, this is this is what Kenny Walker's fourth year
in the NFL or third year in the NFL. How
many years has Knine been here for? Because play during fourth?

Speaker 1 (01:15:00):
Fourth?

Speaker 3 (01:15:01):
Yere?

Speaker 8 (01:15:01):
Okay, So he is not a first round pick, so
he's only got a four year deal. So he's gonna
be a free agent soon. I mean, look, you can
either re sign Kenny Walker and pay him a little
more money. He's not gonna be maybe as expensive as
he would have been because he's got a little bit
of an injury history, right, not injury prone, but a
little bit of a history, and just replacing with a
guy that's making peanuts for four years and then you

(01:15:23):
have the rights to four for five years, so it
makes sense. I mean, I just think this, even if
you don't need him, do you think he's gonna be
Adrian Peterson? You think he's gonna be Walter Payton? Then
if you do, then draft a freaking guy and he
cares if you need him or not.

Speaker 3 (01:15:35):
And that's why I think it's not gonna happen because
I can't see Pete Carroll passing on him. Yah, I
can't see assuming they sign a quarterback, I just kidd.

Speaker 8 (01:15:42):
Right, Hey, the Husky's got J P. Lawsman. Do you
guys hear about that? I shared JP Losman as an
assistant quarterback. But yeah, exciting news on montleke Man. Exciting news.

Speaker 3 (01:15:51):
What else you got going on to?

Speaker 8 (01:15:52):
Oh, let's see Humullin's gonna be here till five o'clock.
He can't stay the entire show because he's got to
take his wife out the Valentine's Day there, so he's
got to leave it. We're gonna hear from Clint Kobiac
if you missed it on Tuesday's show. We're here at
tonight Kevin Harlan coming up at six oh five. We're
gonna go back and take a little walk down memory
Lane to our Super Bowl Parade coverage eleven years ago

(01:16:13):
and hon are the Eagles getting theirs today?

Speaker 3 (01:16:14):
So yeah, that's what we're doing. Sounds fun to me.
I'll be back on Monday, whether you like it or not.
