Speaker 1 (00:00):
What has turned into we say this in sports all
the time, an incredibly busy day in sports lost us
up to get to my goodness, we mean every bit
of that today. First of all, let me set the scene,
because you're gonna hear a lot of noise in the background.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
And it's good. It's one of my favorite days of
the year.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
I love the fact that iHeart and more importantly KJR.
From the nine to fifty days to the ninety three
point three kJ FM days, we have always supported the
high school sports, basketball and football. We'll have the boys
and girls state high school basketball championships here from the
Tacoma Dome on Saturday on nine to fifty on the
AM dial.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
And also we'll hear today kind of give you updates
here and there.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
We got a great one right down emial Ridge and
Richland are thirty five thirty two Richling with the lead.
These are the courts that guys like Pablo ban Caro,
Brandon Roy, Isaiah Thomas, etc. Have all played on and
starred in over the years, so many great players. We're
not gonna have a lot of time to spend on
that today because we have a wild day of sports,
(00:59):
and I know a guy. Mike Homberan's in studio. Hugh
milling is with me as well. Hugh, real fast. You
and I when I first met you, I think one
of the first things I ever did when I got
to kJ R was back in two thousand and six
in this building. You and I did state high school
football championships, Skyline and O day.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
If you remember that back in the.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Day, Yeah I do, Yeah, Yeah, I do. Yep.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
That was a ton of fun. Well, we're gonna be here.
You'll hear the cry of the crowd in the background.
Here was with US coach Holmgren came in, had to
do some business with Jessman today, and all of a
sudden we said, you know what, Mike, we're gonna press
you to duty.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Hi, coach, how are you.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
I'm doing great? And I miss you.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
It's coming in here. I almost got lost. It's been
so long since I came in the last time. So
but and I and you told me that anyone told
me he was also going to be on the call,
I would have come in early.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
I'm gonna probably get out of your guys' way in
just a second, by.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
The way, but I smile. Anyways, I know.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I know I saw Mike last night.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
I didn't see him in person, but I was up
in my per doing the Kraken pre post and intermission
shows yesterday and I looked up on the one of
the twins they call them, the two big screens of
Climbate Pledge Arena and one of the loudest evasions of
the night when they showed Mike Hulngrin up on the
big screen in the in the suitet last night yet
foot of the game coach.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Oh.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
I had a great fun until they did that, until
they showed me on the screen. I I'm watching. You know,
I don't go to many of the hockey games, but
the crowd and that atmosphere there is really something with
guys dancing, you know, and the kids. My grandkids were
there and they wanted me to dance on the on
the thing, you know and jump around. I said no, sorry,
you know, but it was it was that was really fun.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
It was really nice.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Well, we got a lot to get to Seahawk wise,
what a crazy day this turned out to be. I'm
gonna get to DK in a second. Let me start
with Tyler Lockett. This was expected. Uh, we knew that
he was going to be released. It's a salary cap thing,
and it was and Mike, you know, was one of
those releases that you just kind of expect, both as
a player and as an organization.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
They did it the right way.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
They organized it with Tyler so he could send a
message out on social media. We'll get to how it
got kind of pushed aside with the other stuff in
a second. But as hard as it is to say
goodbye to a player, a lot of times those guys
probably know right when they signed that contract that that's
just part of the business.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
He's going to be gone.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Yeah, I think so on he's a bright guy. And
Jess and I were talking earlier. You know, he's been
a great football player for a long time. His run
as a wide receiver here is really good. It's really great.
But he has other things going. He's got real estate,
he's done things in the offseason. He's a very well
spoken young guy, and so he's got other things he
(03:39):
could do. And I think it was you know, it
doesn't surprise me at all. And the fact is it's
probably time and he knew. He's a smart guy. He
knew the contract stuff was coming up, and this was
probably what was going to happen.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Hugh Tyler Lockett.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
When we were sitting there on draft eight years ago,
ten years ago, out of the Seahawks, you were with us.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
It was all this.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
We were out there and they drafted Tyler Lockett. He
was thought of his to be a return man out
of Kansas State. That was kind of what we were thinking.
He was going to come in and be Ten years later,
he misses one regular season game. Kind of the picture
of consistency. But when someone says, humeil and write me
the summary of Tyler Lockett's career in Seattle, how would you.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Do so well?
Speaker 5 (04:23):
I think, first of all, as for today and the
announcing to me, I references this morning. It's like the
circle of life. You know, you just hold up, Simba.
This is just expected all along. I think Tyler Locke
came in and gave you everything that you could have
ever wanted. I mean, he was a competitor, He was smart,
He had great short area of quickness. He had a
(04:44):
remarkabil ability to close the sale, to finish the play
in terms of the contested catch guys draped over him,
remarkable ball skills to finish the play, and and so
I think that, you know, he's deserving probably of the
Ring of Honor.
Speaker 6 (05:05):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
He handled himself as a pro in every way. I
just think there's there's nothing bad to say. It's great
on Tyler Lockett, great on the Seahawks. You know, it's
it's it's exactly the type of story that you want
written when you draft a guy like you did and
you got you got everything, and and and the this
has been a little bit drawn out because we knew
(05:26):
at the end of the season this would be his
last game or his last run with Seattle, and so
this is.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Not unexpected at all.
Speaker 5 (05:34):
I just think it's a it's a it's a beautiful
uh career by Tyler Lockett. And and if today's a
good day to talk about it, then wonderful, you know.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
And Ian one one thing I think that what will
stand out in my mind is how many for he's
not a very big guy, but how many listen, how
many deep throws when people were draped all over him?
Did he make key throw key catches in the end zone?
Was your remarkable? Those are the things I'll remember about
him because he is not a big, big guy and
(06:05):
so but he really could make those plays and he
did it for a long time.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Mike, Mike, should he end up in that ring of
honor up there with you?
Speaker 7 (06:13):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (06:13):
I think so. I think so.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Yeah, he's I think he's established that he's one of
the best receivers the s have ever had, So that
should happen.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
All right, Well, let's get to the other story. Uh,
and we'll see sometimes, Hugh. This is how it worked
with Mike and I. Every Wednesday when he's on during
the regular season, at some point he'll look at me
and he'll think that I'm just trying to, like, you know,
push his buttons. You know, I'll bring up certain names
if I don't know extra and things like that. I
don't want to nest. Now, today's a day that hopefully
understands when I do this and I say the name
(06:44):
Joey Galloway, I'm doing it for a reason, Mike.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
All right, Okay, got it? Okay, Okay, just checond because.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Because I think that I'm sorry, go ahead.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
I think there's a president and if anybody can relate
to what John Schneider might be going through right now,
it might be you. Before I get to that, Hugh,
we've talked you and I I kind of call you
the president of the DK fan club, I might be
the vice president. I love the guy as a player.
I think he's important to this team. The news comes
out that he wants out. I can't repeat what Hughes
(07:18):
said when I called him to tell him that today
and not on the radio. If it was a podcast, maybe,
but here now you've had some time to steal on it.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
Your thoughts, Well, I'm disappointed as a Seahawk fan. I'm
angry about the way things developed. And I'm sure Mike
will elucidate the differences between Dk Metcalf and Joey Galloway
so that it just doesn't become a synonymous analogy there.
But I would say that that for Metcalf, here was
(07:49):
a guy that in his first five years. There's only
been two other men that have had over nine hundred
yards and five touchdowns in each of their five years.
Their names are Randy Moss and Ajar, and the third
being DK Metcalf. This guy has not been a bust
into before he got hurt this year, he was on
a pace for thirteen hundred yards and now I hear Look,
(08:11):
I think it's typical in this town or any town.
You start to try and rationalize, and then you're gonna
mitigate who DK Metcalf was. And I hear these people
dk couldn't run routes. I mean I heard in this
say he can't run routes. Well, I'm going to just
take an objective reference, Pro Football Reference. They grade every
(08:34):
single player on every single play, and every NFL team
subscribes to their service. In starting in twenty twenty, DK
Metcalf has had a better route grade than Tyler Lockett
in four of those five years. Now, let's throw out
twenty twenty four, because DK Metcalf's route grade was nine
(08:58):
point four points higher seventy five to seven sixty five
point six. Let's just take the four years that preceded that,
that's twenty twenty, twenty twenty one, twenty twenty two, and
twenty twenty three. And in this case, in twenty twenty,
Metcalf's route grade was five point five points higher than
(09:18):
Tyler Lockett's. The next year it was point four, and
then in twenty twenty three it was four point seven.
The one year that Tyler Lockett had a better route
grade than DK Metcalf was twenty twenty two. It was
a two point one difference. I think people get in
this idea. They just say, like, what who says that?
(09:42):
Who's watching that? Are you watching the tape? Who has
the quality of the qualification?
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Say?
Speaker 5 (09:47):
Oh, DK Metcalf's he doesn't run routes, Well, that's nonsense.
He had a year where he was the number one
by Pro Football Focus, the number one receiver in contested catches.
And so I I think that they have made a
mistake on this. I'll and I'll close with this because
I want we all want to hear Mike. I sent
Mike on on on certain occasions on Monday, I'd send
(10:10):
Mike pictures of DK wide ass open. And you know
what I hear, Gino Smith, you say, well, he can
throw a football. Of course he can throw a football.
He's a beautiful throw of the football. That's not what
makes quarterbacking in the NFL difficult. What makes quarterbacking difficult,
in my opinion, we're gonna hear from Mike. In my opinion,
what makes quarterbacking different. It is you have to see
(10:32):
the movie before it happens. You've got a process, and
you've got to put your back foot in the ground
and say, I've got DK Metcalf open on an intermediate incut,
but it's only going to be completed if I throw
it right now, because if I don't see it now
and I don't anticipate it now, the whole opportunity to
squander DK Metcalf would have been a seventeen hundred yard receiver.
(10:52):
Drew Brees there. I'm sick and tired of on Monday
getting up at four in the morning and watching the
tape and seeing Metcalf is saying he's open. But he's
only open if we have reasonable anticipation. So listen. You
want to uh uh. Fans, you want to say DK
Metcalf can't run a route tree whatever, knock yourself out.
I disagree. I'm I'm a fan, and I'm pissed about
(11:15):
how this thing has been hammed.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
All right, Mike, Mike, before we get to uh, you
know the whole what the process is, and and you
know you were in the league for a long time
and saw pretty much everything, and even not exactly the
same with Joey, but in the case of you've seen guys,
you've heard guys want to get trades and everything else
along the way. Before I get to that, Mike, Holmgren
the play caller. And you heard Hugh describe Dk Metcalf?
Speaker 2 (11:39):
What what? What would?
Speaker 1 (11:41):
How many times you just licked your chops going, Man,
If I would, I would have loved to have had
this guy. What is DK Metcalf The route runner of
the player, the wide receiver, the football player.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
Well, he I think is unique.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
I mean I can remember when they drafted him, and
I think you and I were sitting at the table
and you had done the stats on on on his size,
his speed, all that kind of stuff after viewing a
lot of film on him, and it's right you look
at him. I've I've talked to Dk over at the
facility a few times, and you know, he's a very
(12:14):
very impressive guy that way. I mean he's fast, he's big,
he's strong, he's got all that stuff. And so if
I'm playing, if I'm calling plays and he's in my
he's in my offense. I have a chart of plays
for DK Metcalf. I had a chart for Jerry Rice.
I had to start a chart for Sterling Sharp. Aside
(12:35):
from all the other plays that are on that sheet,
these are the plays I know I got to get
him the ball during this game. On these plays and
so if that wasn't happening and he was right, he
showed me film and we look at film together and
stuff where he was wide open and and the ball
went someplace else, and so, uh, you know, decision making.
(12:56):
I can't comment on why that happened, but it is
startling that he that you're not throwing the ball to
your best receiver when he's wide open, but he was.
I would say this in a little bit of a pushback.
I always thought, because he's so fast and so strong
and so just over the top for a receiver that
(13:19):
I haven't seen before, there are little subtleties, subtleties, not
big things, but subtleties that most receivers have to master
so they can function in the league. And I think
that there's a part of his brain, there's a part
of him that never worked that hard to do those things,
sending up a defensive back, just just helping himself just
(13:42):
a little bit. He rely on just his physical athletic ability,
and most of the time that worked fine. But now
as we've seen his career and the numbers go down
just a little bit, there are numbers, there are other
reasons for that, as well, but I think that factored
into the decision making. If it comes to that. I
have a strong opinion that we this is we're seeing
(14:04):
a lot of noise today, a lot of noise, right,
but it's it's gonna I think. I think there's gonna
be some clarity and some things happening here that we're
not seeing right now, as far as maybe even him staying.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
Yeah, Mike Homberan, Hugh milling with us and I want
to get coach slash GM slash team president over the years.
Mike Hombran's thoughts on the process in a second. One
thing to note is this isn't Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson
could dictate where he would go. He had no trade
clause in his contract. DK does not have that. If
the Seahawks want to trade him, they can tat them
(14:37):
wherever the heck they want. Hell send him the CFL,
whatever it is. He can't dictate where he goes. Russell could.
They still got a pretty good haul for Russ, but
that situation was different.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Mike.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Of all the chairs you've sat in, you've gone through
this before, What's what's the process like when you hear
this an agent I'm sure it's an agent College Schneider
and says, hey, yeah, my guy wants out, right, my
guy wants out, what's the process?
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Walk us through this?
Speaker 4 (15:02):
Well, I think they've from what I understand that John,
they've John, Yeah, Schneider's been talking to the age. They've
had discussions certainly prior to this. And the Seahawks have
a number they maybe haven't gotten to the top number yet,
and then you factor in what some of the other
(15:24):
top receivers in the league signed for and are getting,
and that's that's where the discussion takes place. And I
think I think the Seahawks want to keep the DKA
but at a certain number, and his agents saying, wait
a second, these other guys are making this number, and
so that's where that's where it sits. But the fact
is he's got another year left on his contract. And
(15:46):
so if the Seahawks say no, you know what, no,
we're not going to trade you. You're here, then all
of a sudden you enter into the Joey Galloway situation.
I was in and that was no fun, but we
did it a certain way.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Well what happened there? Can you just for you for
younger fans. Everybody can just kick because every situation is different.
But you know, sometimes teams and players and everybody's going
to walk in a hard place.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
What happened in that.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Situation, well, there is a lot of similarities. When I
came in, I was brand new, and Joey came into
my room. There were a number of people that came
into my room that had been promised, apparently from the
old regime, that they were gonna extend their contracts and
do all this stuff. I said, we're gonna have to
sit down and we're gonna you know, I didn't make
those promises to you, but we're going to talk and
(16:30):
see if we can work this out. Joey, we tried
to work it out for a certain number he wanted
more so he it was his last year he was
under contract, but he didn't come in for the first
eleven games. He didn't come in. He came in right
when the breakdown to allow him to be a free
agent the following season and be in our last five
(16:52):
games of the year or something like that, and it
just wrecked our team out. Honestly, we were eight and
three and then all of a sudden we fell apart
because I think one of the big reasons was getting
in Joey Galloway. It just didn't work.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
So what do you what do you think Mike being
to Mike going to keep you in the next segment
for a jump in this deeper before I let Mike go.
So Mike in the in this situation, we now know
how the NFL works. Guys in the last year in
their contract always want the extension before they step on
the field in that last year. But if you don't
step on the field, you don't get paid. All those
things come into play. So in John Schneider in the
(17:27):
Seahawks situation, Mike McDonald and and a brand new offensive
coordinator Clint Kubiak, who you know, I know he was
gonna talk about in the next segment. This is a
guy that fits perfectly in the set. In that situation,
there is a lot of stuff going on. Mike, what
what do you think is likely to happen? Do you
think they're gonna be forced Do you think they will
force him to get traded or do you think the
Seahawks will try to work this thing out?
Speaker 4 (17:48):
No, I think I really think there's a good chance
he stays. It's about the money, after all the noise.
It's about the money, I think. And so they'll come
back and say, this is what our offer is. This
is what it is, and DK, you know, extended two years,
maybe once five year.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
I don't know what it is going to be.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
But then all of a sudden, DK goes now or
his agent goes, no, that's not going to work. Then
DK decides not to come to camp. Not so he
could pull what Joey did, come back in when he's
right near the end, and then become a free agent
the next year, okay, Or then you could franchise him.
(18:28):
I had to franchise Joey. I franchised him. Wouldn't just
let him walk away?
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (18:34):
And then we I got Jerry Jones to then we
made the trade and got two number ones, and it
was a big trade. I don't think now because he's
the Seahawks. Ability to get a good trade from somebody,
now that's worth DK. I don't think they're going to
see that, and so I don't think that's why I
think he's gonna stay huge.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
You got anything else for coach before we turn him
loose and him get back to work with Jess.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
I think Mike and I could talk for.
Speaker 8 (19:00):
An hour easily, uh, without even taking him bread. But no,
I uh, I agree with Mikes you know, Mike said,
he pushed back. I've acknowledged I think Mike and I
would think exactly the same. I uh, what was dk
His nuanced is justin Jefferson. No, but let's let me
ask you this ian who if gunder your head right now,
(19:21):
I gotta pissol.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
Right between your eyebrows. Who had better feet? Shaquille O'Neill
or Aquem Elijah Wan? Okay, akeem right, soccer player after right, Like,
there's just some things that Keem was more polished. But
Shaquille O'Neil was a freak and he had he brought
a dominance that Okay, yeah, maybe he wasn't as polished
(19:43):
as Elijah Wan with the feet, but there was other
aspects of him just being bigger and badder and stronger
and how he dominated.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
So so Metcalfe, is he ever.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
Gonna have uh uh, you know the most brilliant routes, uh,
you know, Cooper cup style. No, but and and Mike's right,
he you know, there's always room for improving the nuance.
I'm just saying I just said, in the last four,
last five years, PFFT had dk metcalf as a better
route running grade than Tyler.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
So it wasn't like, yeah, I don't know, just lean
from that. What you want here?
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Stick with me because I got more. I got more
for you, buddy, I got more for you next Avent coach.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
We're gonna let you go.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
We appreciate you sticking around a little bit longer and
jumping on with us today. With you and I this
is you know, I could talk to you like you
all day long, but uh, we'll let you get back.
Jess probably have you probably have a training session for
iHeart or something that Jess is going.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
To help you with. Youre coming up.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
That's on top of all those Hey, I aced that
training session.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
I did.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
I had the best score of anybody in the building.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Okay, did just do it for you? Is that why?
Speaker 9 (20:50):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (20:51):
No comment, no comment, exactly. That's my That's the great
Mike Holm Grin Ring of honor. Man. We love him.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
I love having them on. Hugh Millen's gonna stick around
a watershed moment to day and so many different situations
for the Seahawks. We'll talk about that wrapping up with
email and coming up.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Next week.
Speaker 7 (21:09):
Live from the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio.
Back to Ian Fernett's powered by Seattle's Closest Sportsbook, snowp
Call me Casino on Sports Radio ninety three point three
KJR FM.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
We're back on a Wednesday afternoon, a wild Wednesday afternoon
in the Seattle Sports Crack and make a massive trade.
We'll get to that coming up at one forty five
in the Daily power Play. Tyler Lockett and the Seahawks
their era has come to an end. They announced that
Tyler had been released earlier today. We'd expected that it
was one of those things that salary cap casualty. We
(21:46):
were all going to talk, hey, speaking glowing terms about
Tyler Lockett and how what a great career he had today.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
But twenty minutes after that happened, news comes out the.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
DK Metcalf reportedly wants out of Seattle.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
Hume ellins with me.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
I'm at the coming home by the way the w
i A State High school basketball championships. More on that later.
We've got the championship games like KJR this weekend. Boys
and Girls three A and four A here from as
Kevin Cloud. We used to call it the old Woodshed
down here in t Town.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Hugh.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Let me let me ask you just a question. I mean,
and none of us can get inside of DK's brain necessarily,
but I'll ask you to speculate. Why do you think
he is at this point right now?
Speaker 5 (22:23):
Well, I'm glad you emphasize that we're not in his head.
We don't know, you know, the the inference. And the
first thing you say, okay, where are we with contract?
Is did he want some long term deal that the
Seahawks were unwilling to provide or unable to provide right
given their cap situation. I'll tell you one other thing
(22:45):
that's that's somewhat of a sibling to that. When I
was in Denver, John Elway and Dan Reeves, the wheels
wobbled off, and one of the things that Elway was hearing, uh,
you know Dan Reeves around town. Oh, John Alwoy can't
win the big one. But then he also had he
(23:05):
was golfing and he gets this this word that that
the Broncos are trying to trade him to the Redskins
for mark ripping and draft picks and all this. Right,
what have we been hearing for the last week or
ten days. And and by the way, that that uh,
that necessitated a meeting, uh, during which time Reeves said
to Elway, john you don't like me very much, do you?
(23:28):
And Elway looks at him and says, Dan, I hate
you more than anybody on the planet.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
Okay. So that's how far things got.
Speaker 5 (23:37):
And it was all because of of the stuff that
chattered that was coming in and some of that, some
of that was happening this last week or so. When
you've heard all this, Hey, the Seaorks are willing to
trade the Seahorks are willing to trade him. You know, uh,
blah blah blah. How many times have you did you
see that? Those stories pop up and and you know,
(24:00):
look for a guy who you know gives his freaking
all to an organization. When I was with the Cowboys,
Jimmy Johnson came in on a meeting and he goes, Hey,
just want to let you know we just signed Billy
Bates this morning, and and and he says, I want
you all to know if you do things the right way,
you compete, and you do things in the offseason and
(24:23):
you're dying, and you do the right things and you
produce and you want to be a cowboy for life,
you can be a cowboy for life. And we just
prove that with Billy Bates, right, who was just a
he was a nickel linebacker and special teams guy. But
he like so, so, where is this with the Seattle
Seahawks in that locker room that Metcalf with that work.
(24:44):
We just watch the tape put on the coach's tape.
You don't see it on the TV copy. Then run
why stick? Why stick is a ubiquitous concept. Why Stick
has the whyest receiver running a takeoff. Guess what he's
going to get that ball one out of two hundred times.
And Metcalf he knows he's not getting the ball, but
he's springing off the ball like he's running the hundred
(25:04):
meter in the Olympics. And so here's a guy who's
done everything and uh and and and you know from
his perspective, you know there's like, oh, uh, DK's on
the on the the trade block and uh, I don't know.
I just I think they really have mishandled DK Metcalf
(25:24):
in a lot of different ways.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
And uh and that's one of them.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
Well, let me let me wrap it up with this
year because we've got to go in a couple of minutes.
But let me just put a bow on it with this.
The part I find strange, I guess in a sense
strange that that it's at this point is that let's
say DK, I mean, first of all, I don't know
if you share this, but boy, if the story is
coming out of Chicago after the fact, it feels like
(25:50):
Shane Waldron was just not a good offensive coordinator at
the NFL level. Obviously things didn't work out with Grub
last year with Seattle for whatever reason, with with McDonald,
but you've got a brand new offensive coordinator coming in
here in Clinton Kubiak.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
You've I think told me this before.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Isn't this a guy that that what DK does, his
skill set, everything else, that the Kubiak offense will be
perfect for DK? Metcalfs well, I don't know, maybe perfect
perfect is not the right word, but why wouldn't d
K or is this is this not a good fit?
Speaker 2 (26:22):
Maybe he's studied film New Orleans.
Speaker 3 (26:25):
I would just say, okay.
Speaker 5 (26:26):
If you say okay, why would if you're selling this
to DK, like hey, hey, uh see, how it's gonna
be good for you you know, you'd say, well, Clinton Kubiak,
he was, he was in Minnesota with Justin Jefferson. He
understands how to to uh, you know, to beat those
rolled coverages. There's a route there. There there's a a
a diminished route tree for receivers who get rolled coverage
(26:48):
on the outside, but there is a route tree. There's
still routes that can be run against those double coverage
and and uh and and Kubiak can get to those
routes and him inside. Remember of the thirty five receivers
who are targeted one hundred or more times last year,
if you rank them in terms of the percent that
(27:09):
they were in the slot, DK was dead last at
thirty fifth.
Speaker 3 (27:14):
JSN was first.
Speaker 5 (27:16):
So conspicuous that Seahawks are first and last on that
list again of one hundred more or more targets. And
so I think that would be part of it. His
use I talked about Geno. Geno, in my mind could
be a reason. It's like, dude, the hard part of
(27:37):
playing quarterback is not throwing the football. The hard part
is anticipating where to throw the football. And too often
Gino is late. He's twenty seven and twenty three in
the last three years, he's won no playoff games. He's
got the exact same win percentage that everybody was all
(27:57):
pissing and moaning about with Jerry Depoto. He's got a
fifty four percentage. And that's if you don't include twenty
twenty one when he's one and two in relief of
Russell Wilson. So just going since he's been the starter,
he wins fifty four percent of his games, and that's
about maybe on a good day, the percent of times
that he hits DK metcalf on the break when DK
(28:18):
comes open.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
I'll wrap it up with this, by the way, I
like that. If was that fifty four percent? Is that? Seriously?
Speaker 3 (28:24):
The number twenty seven and twenty three?
Speaker 2 (28:26):
God help us?
Speaker 3 (28:27):
All right, you don't even need a calculator. Wazoo boy,
you can do that one double twenty seven.
Speaker 1 (28:33):
I know, I know, all right, Before I let you go,
based on your comments, you know I love you and
I'm just playing.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
I know, I know, I know. I'm good with it. Listen,
I'm not known for my math.
Speaker 1 (28:45):
Let me wrapping up with this based on your comments
with l Way and that situation, what you heard Mike say,
do you think there's a chance that DK is still
playing for Seattle next fall.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
If I had to bet I would I would say
it's not that it's less probable, it's more probable that
he will not be a Sea OC would be my
that's just conjecture and speculation, and having seen this, I
hope I'm wrong. There's certainly a chance. I think there's
a good chance. Do I think it's fifty one percent
(29:17):
or greater probability? No, I think it's more fifty point
one or greater that Metcalf will not be a SEAOK
next year.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
I like it. Well, there's a chance.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
We'll see. Uh, you're the best, buddy. I appreciate you.
Come on back, take care. I'll talk to you. Hume
mellon joining us. Uh Kracking made some massive moves today.
We'll tell you about that when we come back. And
top of the hour, Jess, we're gonna check in with
our friend Great co Cell.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
For the first time.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
She's not here, but I got but you know that
her sentiments would be very happy.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Here's the thing we were gonna talk.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
This is gonna be our start of our draft coverage
with Great co Cell today.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
But I think we're gonna pivot.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
We're gonna talk to Great co Cell about DK me
Let's locket today. We'll do that top of the hour
after the Cracking conversation.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
Next, Malkin shoots went Y on GOLDI Plus Today. Stop
It's Crosby.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Stop.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
This is the daily power Play Deep Slot one timer McKennon.
Speaker 7 (30:22):
Now Ian fernez Son Sports Radio ninety three point three,
waved Way, k j R F M.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
Well Cracking fans get to know mikey ac Monts. He
is the newest member of the Seattle Cracking. He comes
in and uh he's the only player that comes back.
And what has to be and Andrews my mind is
mush today. I believe most significant trade and cracking history.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Yeah, I'd say so for sure. All Right, so maybe
you can say Giordano because he was your captain, but yeah,
I still think this one.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
But Geo was a rental from the start, and you know,
so that was the case. The big key today and
just a huge story if you if you're just joining
us right now, Yes, the Seahawks News. We'll get to
that coming up top of the Our great co Sale
is gonna join us. But there is a massive trade
the Seattle Kraken have traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning,
Yanni Gord Oliver b york'strand and a twenty twenty six
(31:22):
fifth round pick. In exchange, Seattle receives Tampa Bay's first
round pick in twenty twenty six in twenty twenty seven,
also a pick that the Lightning had got from Toronto,
a second round pick this coming draft in twenty twenty five.
And mikey Asimont, who is I guess I'm just gonna
call him this. He's a winger but can play. He's
(31:45):
off brand Yanni. Yeah, that's what he is. Ye give
you some energy. He's not Yannie, but he's off brand Yanni.
So he's the body that comes back in place of it. Now,
the trade deadline for the National Hockey League is Friday.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
We're going to be we being me. We'll be out
at the.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
Cracking Community Ice Flex where Ron Francis and his staff
of Hockey Operations folks are hanging out. The noon deadline
will come, and then after that we're gonna have Ron
on the show on Friday at some point between one
and three to kind of break all these things down.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
The deadline is far from over.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
Forty what we have forty six hours until it's here,
and there are other players out there. I would be
frankly stunned if Brandon tanneb is on this roster.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
I would be shocked if Brandon Tanna's on this roster.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
Yeah, and Jamie Alexiak too.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Jamie Lexiak is an interesting one. There's a lot of
smoke out there about Jamie Alexiak. I know Toronto's interested.
They had scouts in town. They're looking at that. They
don't like the fact that Florida went out and got
Seth Jones yep and got better. So I Jamie Alexiak
is a possible. I wouldn't go to say it's probable,
(32:58):
as he's very possible. I think Tenant's almost a slam
dunk to get moved. And I'll be honest with you,
there aren't a lot of guys that are off the
table right.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
We saw it with the B York straight. I don't
think everyone thought he would be going, but got at
it into the Yannie trade.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
Well, and the B York strand one is is good
from this standpoint. It clears cap space. Yes, so you
know that's that's the big key right now, Yes, right now,
right now, they have twenty one point seven million dollars
in space heading into the summer. But they've got to
sign Coppo Coco yes, and Riker Evans right. Riker's not
(33:36):
arbitration eligible, so he won't cost too much and they
can probably do like a little bridge deal with him.
Copple will probably eat up a little bit more where
the guess is who's kind of going with some folks.
We're guessing about eight to ten million YEP for those
two guys, So then that puts you Rifley twelve or
twelve and a half million or so.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
You probably need another ten or twelve cleared off your.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
Cap YEP to really go out and do some damage
in the off season in terms of free agency. So
I think in an ideal world they'd love to get
rid of Alexiak.
Speaker 3 (34:08):
YEP.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
They will buy out Philip Grubauer in the offseason because
I don't think anybody's gonna take on that contract, or
if they did, you'd have to eat some of the
salary back. So Grubauer probably a buyout candidate in the offseason. Alexiak,
if you can trade him, they'll do cartwheels. And if
they're able to find a buyer or a taker of
Andre Berakowski. I think it would be the most the
(34:31):
best move in the history of hockey, But I think
that might be a hard one. Yeah, without retaining a
whole bunch of his salary.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
So Ian really quick. A couple of people on the
text line talking kind of comparing this Yanni trade because, oh,
they're trading a guy that we know is a guy
who has has some you know, reputation with his fan
base for draft picks. It's a very Mariners thing to do.
Can you explain how this is not like a Mariner's
thing to do in terms of just getting draft picks
(34:57):
for guys.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
That you know are Yeah, you're you're in a salary
cap league. That's the first thing, so you are bumping
up against that cap. Janni Gord had an expiring contract
coming up. You are probably not gonna resign him. He
plays center. You have Shane Wright, Maddy Beniers, and Chandler
Stevenson an all play center as well. Yanni can play
(35:19):
on the wing, but he's he's better in the middle. Yep,
And you weren't gonna resign him more. If you did,
you'd offer him pennies on the dollar. He could get
more on the open market, so he was he was gone,
unless unless they went to him and said, hey, you
know what, we can give you two million dollars or
a one point five million or a you know, a
four million dollars over two or three years, he could
(35:42):
get more on the open market. He'd be a fool
to probably take that unless he really really wanted to
stay in Seattle. So you were gonna lose him, So
you get something in return for Yanni Gordon is what
you do?
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (35:52):
If I think this trade's I don't know if this
trade goes down as Shane Wright doesn't have the last
three months that he's had, Shane Wright has put Shane
Wright is one.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
Of the leading scorers.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
He's he is the leading.
Speaker 1 (36:04):
Score among players his age twenty one or younger over
the last I think it's the last eight weeks.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
In the NHL.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
I mean he's he's putting up, he's doing things that
I mean, he's really he's coming into his own Matt
He's gonna play in the middle. That's not gonna change
with Coppocaco. It's not Mariner like it's it's definitely not
Mariner's life. Now we all want instant gratification. And here's
why I think they're going to be. They have to
be very active in the in the summer months or
(36:34):
even maybe if they can. They've got a bunch of
first round picks. Now, do you trade a first round
pick for a body right now?
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Yeah? To bring somebody in with like years on his
contract still.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
Yes, do you do that?
Speaker 1 (36:48):
Or do you shed a first round pick to get
rid of Burakowski to give yourself some more flexibility in
terms of salary cap next year.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
It's not Mariners like it's it's it's not.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
I'll just read it trading most popular player for draft picks.
That's more Mariners, less Seahawks. Again, perception is reality to
average fan, this trade does not excite offseason it's.
Speaker 1 (37:09):
It's it's and honestly, the short term, the short term,
nineteen twenty games left in the season not going to
be fun.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
But if you're asking, but I'd ask you, has it
been fun this year?
Speaker 3 (37:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (37:22):
No it is not.
Speaker 1 (37:23):
So the process of getting back to where they want
to be next year starts over the next two days.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
They need to have money to spend in the offseason,
and this helps them get to that point.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
See, we we can't live in a world in Seattle
where we're just excited about players because they you know,
they try harder, they're a fan favorite, all right, like
that Just Mitch Mitch Hanniger, Ladies and gentlemen, Mitch Hanniger.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
That's now. The difference is Yanni.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
Can play, Yeah you can.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
Mitch can't.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
But man, everyone was so sad when Mitch left and
so happy when Mitch came back. That's that's not how
you run a winning organization. Yeah, Yanni is a huge
part of this team and a huge part of this
team's This franchise is history as well and always will be.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
But you've gotta make him. You had to make that move.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
And and like I said, the next one's gonna piss
people off too, is Brendon tannem How I'm gonna telling
you guys, don't buy Gord or Tan of Jersey because
they're both gone. They are both gone, and I'm gonna
guess if they can move him, Alexiak will be gone
as well.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
So that's just the way it is. You got it.
This team's got to get better.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
If you heard the comments with Todd light Wickie, with
Softy on President's Day. They're not standing pat Man. They're
gonna be uber aggressive. They're not good right now. They
are a bad hockey team. They just got a lot worse. Okay,
I don't say they're bad. They just got a lot.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
Worse for this specific year, for this season, yes, all right,
for this season.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
The cool thing is, if you're a cracking fan, my
guess is if they keep dealing guys without an NHL
player in return, necessarily you're gonna see Yanni Newman and
some other guys coming up your pursuon. And that's pretty
and that's exciting because they got some dudes down there
in Coachella Valley and Berkeley Catton. Whether it's a year
or two away, he is. He is the Krakens version
(39:09):
of Cole Young or Emerson or whoever you want to
put in that category.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
This team just can't run it back though, in and
I think this is a sign that they're not just
doing that.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
They cannot run it back.
Speaker 1 (39:18):
I mean, they could have just said, hey, we're gonna
keep Oliver, he's in the contract running re signed. Yeah,
we're gonna see if we can get Keith Turboll or whatever.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
No, no, no, that's not how it works.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
Can't run it.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
No, they're not going to all right.
Speaker 1 (39:30):
Greg Cosell, what does he think of Tyler Lockett and
DK Metcalf stories Today our man mister film himself joined
us next.
Speaker 7 (39:42):
No from the Star Rentals Sports to us your ninety
three point three j j r FM sports headline.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
We're gonna make this quick because I got great Cosella
standing by Big day in sports in Seattle. We're live
at the Takomodo by the way, the w i A
state high school basketball championships boty by Geza Credit Union
among the DK Metcalf tells various people, at least his people,
tell various people that he wants out.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
He wants to trade for the Seahawks.
Speaker 1 (40:09):
Tyler Lockett released by the Seahawks after ten seasons, and
the Sea Kraken have made their first significant trade ahead
of Friday's trade deadline. Yanni gored Oliver B. York Strand
on the way to Tampa Bay. Yanni going back to
the Lightning a team. He win a couple of Stanley
Cups with Let's get to oh by the way, four
nine four to five one.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
Tell them new textilement. It's gay time.
Speaker 3 (40:28):
It's time.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
We want to get your thoughts, comments, questions and concerns.
We'll get those bottom of the hour. Here is Greg Cosel.
Speaker 7 (40:34):
It's time for Egan's weekly visit with NFL Films Greg Coso,
brought to you by Seattle Sider Company on your home
for the twelfth Man in the NFL Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
Ah, you hear the open and you hear the voice.
Speaker 1 (40:51):
In just a couple of seconds, it's our good friend
Greg Cosale joins us from NFL Film, the ESPN Matchup Show,
the guru of all things NFL film, study, and so
much more. We promised when we said goodbye at the
end of the Seahawks season that we would see him again.
It was a threat to him, he said, greg Or.
He said, Greg, we're bringing you back, and here you are.
(41:12):
You actually answered the phone. I think you just answered
Jess's texts. What you did, You've kind of got to
that point now Jess.
Speaker 6 (41:17):
Now I like her than you, and so when she calls,
I answered, I.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
Am a good conduit. I'll give myself that credit.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
And Greg, if I had a dollar for every time
I heard a guest tell me that I would be
a rich man.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
I wouldn't be talking to you right now.
Speaker 6 (41:30):
Well, you know, I was thinking of asking for a trade,
but I decided not to she.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
She told me, you've got a no trade clause in
your contract. So that's that's what it is.
Speaker 1 (41:39):
We've got big news out here in Seattletay. We're gonna
get to that in just a heartbeat and spend most
just for people that no no.
Speaker 6 (41:45):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
We talked, of course, to Greg every every Friday during
the football season getting ready for the Seahawks matchup that weekend.
Nobody breaks down the film and the matchup better than him.
It's been a really immensely popular segment for us. For
we've done this for over a decade, I believe, sir.
It's been a long time that you and I have
been doing that. And the last what five six seven
years we started using Greg talking about the draft, because inevitably,
(42:07):
sometime in November, I'll hear Greg say to me, Hey,
I'm already looking at film of X prospects at this
position in the NFL Draft, Or he'll reach out to
Jess and say, what do you think about Cam Mood
who you covered on the sideline in the last four years,
so we use an abusia during the draft too, So
we love all back for this.
Speaker 6 (42:24):
Your guy, Kyle Williams ran a four to four at
the combine.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
That was good, right, really good?
Speaker 6 (42:30):
That is good.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
Yeah, we like Kyle Lott.
Speaker 6 (42:32):
He's in the process too of watching a back that's
become one of my favorite backs. I watched him last
summer at a different school and this year at his
other school because that's the way of the world now
where guys just transfer. But I am a big Damien Martinez.
Speaker 2 (42:46):
Fan on top former Oregon State star. Yeah, just a
very quick draft thing.
Speaker 1 (42:51):
We'll get more of that next week because we want
to spend a lot of time today talking about what's
going on with the Seahawks, because it's.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
Been a wild day here.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
I mean in the course of literally Greg in the
course at twenty five minutes, we found out if Tyler
Lockett was out.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
We knew that was going to happen.
Speaker 1 (43:05):
But before anybody could just kind of throw some bouquets
and pay tribute to him, DK Metcalf leaks the story
or his agent does whoever, to all the insiders that hey,
I want to trade, I'm out, and kind of just
leap frog over that, so a massive overhaul. We knew
Lockett was gone, we knew, you know, but DK is
a different situation now before we get to that, what
in general terms jumped out at great cosl at the
(43:28):
Combine this year because every year is different.
Speaker 6 (43:32):
Well, you know, it's funny for me because I watch
tape and I see a lot of guys not all
nowhere near all obviously before I get to the combine.
Ean For me, the Combine is more about extremes, good
or bad, because I've seen guys on tape. So if
they're athletic testing measureables basically fall within kind of the
mid range of their position, that doesn't have a big
(43:54):
impact on my evaluation and projection of them because I've
seen their tape. It's when there's extremes that I tend to,
you know, good or bad, where you tend to really
take notice. Like, for instance, I'll give you an example.
This is not in your part of the country. But
Nick immin Wari is a safety from South Carolina who
a lot of people seem to have mocked. I don't
(44:15):
do box as you know, as a first round player,
later first round type. He's six three in an eighth
two twenty and he ran a four to three seven
and he had a tremendous workout. So you know, I
look at that and go, wow, his tape's really good too.
You know that that's a really cool thing. You know,
things like that. But I'll give you an example where
(44:36):
I don't know what it means. And I'm being honest.
A lot of offensive linemen in general, guys are becoming
better athletes. Training is better. You know, every position in
every sport, guys are better athletes. So a number of
offensive linemen ran the forty in under five seconds, and
I think to myself, that's wonderful. But I don't know
what that means as far as what they have to do.
(44:57):
You know, in the NFL, I mean, you know, there's
different kinds of athletic movements. People can say so and
so is a great athlete, but that kind of athletic
movement running fast in a straight line is not the
same thing as having to pass protect against TJ.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
Watt.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
I one hundred percent agree. I watched I watched my
son the last few years, and he was one of
the fast. He's a left tackle at small colleget like
in terms of sprints fastest offensive lineman, faster than some
of the d linemen, faster than a couple of linebackers.
Didn't matter when he's blocking a guy off the edge
like he has it running forty yards, it didn't matter
at all.
Speaker 6 (45:31):
Like that, It reminds me of years and years ago
when Terrell Suggs was drafted by the Ravens. You may
remember this, and I think he ran a four to
eight or a four to nine at the combine and
a lot of people said, you know, oh my god,
he's going to drop, and of course he didn't, and
the Ravens drafted him. And Brian Bellick, who I know
very well and is want to say some funny things
(45:51):
that have a little tinge of sarcasm to them, said that, well,
you know, if he has to run forty yards to
get to the quarterback, which's got a little bit of
a problem, you know. So you know, so some things
I'm just not sure how they carling.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
Yeah, exactly, Well, we'll we'll get into an offense. The
line is gonna be a big focus of us in
our pre draft conversations Greg over the next few weeks
leading into the draft. At the end of April, so
we'll we'll deep dive into that in some of the
specific names. I just for people that don't know. The
last few years, I think pretty much all the guys
the Seahawks have drafted fairly high. We've broken down with
Greg and then on draft and then on draft night
(46:26):
we end up printing sound byes all those guys.
Speaker 2 (46:29):
So it's been fun over the last few years. We
expect that to be the case again this year.
Speaker 6 (46:32):
Well, I'm grinding, I and I'm grinding. It's it's a
lot of guys.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
I know.
Speaker 6 (46:35):
It's always frustrating when I come back from the combine
because it just makes me realize how many more guys
I have to watch.
Speaker 1 (46:41):
Greg Cosell joining us courtesy of our great friends at
Seattle Sider. Go check out the tap room. Seattle Sider's
got a new flavor of the Vivid Sider out right now,
lower in calories, lower and alcohol fantastic for spring Seattle
Sider look for at your local grocery stores as well.
All right, well, today we just did a complete pivot,
and we will to get to this because it's been
a wild day for Seattle. Tyler Lockett was gone. That
(47:05):
wasn't unexpected.
Speaker 2 (47:06):
We were just waiting for it.
Speaker 1 (47:07):
In fact, the Seahawks released four players yesterday. Yeah, and
then they waited today because they wanted, rightfully so and
talked to the people in the organization. They wanted Tyler
to have his day, and he knew it was coming.
They knew it was coming. It was a friendly parting
of the ways because of a cap casualty that happens
in today's NFL. Tyler was gracious on social media and
(47:28):
then twenty minutes later, DK Metcalf drops the bomb saying
I want out of Seattle. And all the rumors about
the Seahawks thinking about trading him, they weren't thinking about
trading him, Greg, I can tell you that. But there
have been discussions. They know he's been unhappy. It's been
more on his side than theirs. But from a football standpoint, no,
Tyler Lockett, No DK Metcalf and a new offensive coordinator
(47:52):
in Clint Kubiak, and I'm making an assumption DK's gone.
Maybe we start with Clint Kubiak and what he did
in New Orleans and what you've seen from him. What
does he bring to the Seattle offense.
Speaker 6 (48:03):
Well, I think ultimately what you're gonna get is you're
going to get probably more under center, more play action
pass game. You know, that's sort of the Kubiak tree,
which of course Kyle Shanahan does a lot of that.
You know, Sean mcvayh does a lot of that. I'm
a big believer in under center play action, and we've
had this conversation over the years. So I think that's
(48:25):
what you're going to get. And by the way, I
think that fits Geno Smith really really well. Now, again
we don't know about he k Metcalf. A lot of
players in the offseason say a lot of things. I'm
sure he does one out in his mind. I'm sure
he feels that the Seattle situation hasn't quite worked out.
I'm sure he feels, as he should ian that he
can be a you know, one hundred catch, fifteen hundred
(48:46):
yard receiver every year and for whatever reason, it hasn't
worked out. You know, there's many reasons for that. There's
not just one. Some probably relate to him, others probably
relate to other factors that are not based on on
just k Metcalf. But I'm sure he sees, you know
what a justin Jefferson's getting what Jamar Chase is going
to get and he feels that, Hey, if I'm in
(49:08):
a better situation, I'm going to catch a hundred balls
plus for fifteen hundred yards, you know, and fourteen touchdowns
and I'm going to get that kind of money. Who knows.
You know, those are hard questions to answer. Is he
a gifted player? Yes, I don't know if he's quite
as gifted as Jefferson or Chase or even aj Brown,
(49:32):
you know, overall in what he brings. But he's certainly
a very very good receiver with the traits to be
a number true, number one receiver. Certainly for the most part.
The numbers have not lent themselves to that while he's
been in Seattle, and I'm sure that's what he's reacting to.
Speaker 2 (49:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (49:49):
I mean, it's interesting because he's put up overall numbers
in his six years and are in terms of number
of catches a year, yards and touchdowns. Only one guy
has done the same thing, and that's that's Randy. But
he hasn't had that all pro pro ball type of
single season. The QBIT numbers are okay, but the all
pro isn't there. We talk about this with few mill
and your friend's you mill all the time, and I
(50:11):
think it's an important context. He brings up the fact
that if DK Metcalf isn't catching a pass, he still
is affecting the game.
Speaker 2 (50:19):
He's affecting coverages. What does he do in terms of
that that you see on tapes?
Speaker 6 (50:24):
Well, I think then you get down to formations and
how you deploy personnel, because you know, obviously the way
the league is built now, receivers line up in multiple spots,
and then of course it also depends on your quarterback
and what he's comfortable with. But if you're going to
line up DK Metcalf as your boundary X, meaning the
single receiver to the short side of the field in
(50:46):
an ideal world, you know, if there's three receivers to
the other side, meaning it's a three by one set,
you know, what you're hoping is you're going to get
a lot of single coverage with DK Metcalf as that
boundary X receiver, and then you want him to win
and be a big factor in your passing game. And
there's no question, I mean, you're dealing with a guy
that's close to six', four that's two hundred and twenty
(51:07):
eight two hundred and thirty pounds that can. RUN i,
mean the traits are there, now you. Know, Yeah i'm
not sure he's as loose hipped as as you, know
maybe A Justin jefferson or A Jamar. Chase but he's
six' four basically. Two thirty he's, a big big man with.
Tremendous speed so, you know you're always going to impact
(51:29):
the defense because no coach wants plays over the top of.
Their defense, you know that's the one thing that no
defensive coordinator wants to see in. This league even though
the running game came back in vogue a little bit,
this year the mantra is still on offense. Explosive plays,
on defense don't allow, explosive plays and there's no QUESTION
That dk metcalf can give you explosive plays in the.
Speaker 2 (51:52):
Pass game IT'S great CoA sale brought To.
Speaker 1 (51:54):
By sales by, the way we are At The tacoma
dome is THE State Wiaa State high School. Basketball Championships
Indigo Urgent Care Giza credit union to bring it.
Speaker 2 (52:03):
To it we'll have all the games.
Speaker 1 (52:04):
For you the championship games Coming, up saturday all day
LONG over a nine fifty ON the, am dial come
on down here and join some.
Speaker 2 (52:10):
Great.
Speaker 1 (52:10):
Basketball brake you talks About the cover six that dkcs
the rolling of, the coverage and that opens things up for.
Other people do you see that? As?
Speaker 6 (52:18):
WELL yeah, i mean what do you See in cover
six is a too high safety structure and you're seeing
that more and more throughout. THE league i doubt that
specific JUST To, dk metcalf because you're seeing that throughout
the league more and more teams play out of a
too high structure and that in. Many, ways look you'll
(52:40):
know this. Really well you think back To the Legion
Of boom okay That was. Cover three they had, for,
five six whatever number of years. It was they had
the best post safety in the Game In. Earl THOMAS
and i remember Talking With dan quinn years Ago AND
dan i asked him who's the most important player on
your defense and He Said earl thomas because he can
erase any mistakes in front. Of him, You, know so
(53:00):
when you have the best post safety in the league
and you Have A cam chancellor who is a specific
kind of player terrific at what, he was but a
specific kind, of player you Could play. Cover three and
then what Happened ian as often happens in the league
because everything is cyclical. And evolving is teams figured out
how to attack. Cover three they found out how to
attack the voids and do a really good job, of
(53:21):
it and then defensive, coordinator, said well wait, a second
there's too. Many voids so now you see a lot
more too high safety coverages throughout, the league so that's
not SPECIFIC To. Dk metcalf then it becomes incumbent upon
offensive coordinators to figure out how to. Attack it and
they're doing. That now you, know THAT as, i said
(53:42):
it all. Becomes cyclical you can go back. THROUGH history, i,
mean shoot you go back to, You Know buddy ryan
with the forty, six defense and for a number of
years no one could figure, it out and then people figured,
it out and now you don't see it hardly at
all in. The league, you know things evolve over time
in this league because coaches are. PRETTY smart i mean you,
know this you're in. The business you know they live.
(54:03):
This stuff twenty four, TO seven i was fortunate enough
With the combine, to have, you know some meals with
coaches and talk to a number, of COACHES and, i
mean this is what these, Guys do this is. Their world,
you know if YOU'RE an, nfl coach it's not, a
job it's.
Speaker 2 (54:16):
An.
Speaker 1 (54:16):
Obsession yeah and with the new Guy, IN kubiak i
guess that's what's kind, of odd is that WITH the dk,
wanting out maybe is, you know you don't even know
like what this guy is.
Speaker 2 (54:27):
Gonna bring It's Not.
Speaker 1 (54:29):
Ryan grubb and if you were Frustrated With ryan grubb
or you're Frustrated With, shane waldron you know you got
a new guy, coming in so maybe there's more A
play i would, Ask, me YEAH but i would just.
Speaker 6 (54:38):
Say, this theoretically, you know we don't know anything un
till it all starts to. Play out but theoretically the
OFFENSE that i Would anticipate kubiak, putting, IN again i don't,
know him but just going by background and, his foundations
based on, HIS background i would say that it's a
really good offense for a receiver because you're going to
(54:58):
have the. Run game being, a fact, you know they
Still Have. Kenneth walker we Saw what sharboney did as
a number two back, last year so they in a
sense have a little bit of a one, two punch.
YOU know i think the play action element really helps
your past game. A lot it would strike me that
it would be a good offense for a number one. Type,
receiver so but that may have nothing to do WITH
(55:19):
With dk metcalf and. HIS thoughts i certainly don't know what.
Speaker 1 (55:22):
He's thinking and you have two number one receivers, in
there BECAUSE obviously gsn kind of evolved.
Speaker 2 (55:26):
Last.
Speaker 6 (55:26):
Year yea, you know then it gets down. TO egos,
i mean you look at a team Like, the eagles
THEY Have aj Brown And, devanta smith, YOU know, I
mean i think most people would SAY That aj brown
is the quote unquote, number One But devanta smith would
probably be seen as A. ONE a, i mean look At,
The Bengals jamar Chase is Jefferson and chase are the
two best receivers. In football but YOU Know t higgins
(55:49):
is a pretty big time receiver, as well. Went healthy so,
you know now it comes down to and, you, know,
athletes look they, have egos as. They should that's why
they're in. Professional sports one of the reasons is that
these guys believe, they're great and they should believe. They're great,
You know but is it possible to have in a
really good passing offense to have two guys catch, you
(56:09):
know eighty, Plus balls absolutely great cossel.
Speaker 1 (56:13):
With Us tyler lockett leaves again. Not unexpected we all expected.
To happen they did it the. Right way they waited
At the seahawks to day to kind of give him,
his day and then again he was kind of pushed
aside BY what. Dk HAD but i want to pay
Tribute To. TYLER lockett i had a chance to cover
him from day one and up until. Last season was
there at every game and covering him on. THE road
i can't tell you how many times we talked to.
(56:34):
HIM postgame i love the. HUMAN being i love. The
athlete how accountable, he was how well. SPOKEN thought, i
mean you couldn't go into. An interview he was A
little he was Different Than. Doug baldwin but He's like
Doug bald when you interviewed, him postgame you. Learned something
he would tell. You SOMETHING and i loved watching. HIM
play i love watching him compete because if you stood next, To,
him greg he would not. Impress you you, would, go
(56:57):
wow how is this GUY an? Nfl player when YOU
watched i were locking over, the years what did?
Speaker 6 (57:01):
You, see well it's funny you Say that IAN because
i remember doing him coming out of It Was. KANSAS
state I believe i Remember Doing kansas. State Right and
i'll be the first to admit he turned out to
be a better RECEIVER than. I thought i thought he'd,
be good, you KNOW but i didn't think he'd be.
Speaker 2 (57:16):
This good and he.
Speaker 6 (57:18):
Just had he was one of those guys that had
a natural quickness to, his movement and he, was SMALL
and i guess maybe, his size, you know left me
Thinking that i'm not sure exactly what his role is as,
a receiver as that kind. Of receiver you KNOW that
i knew he'd be, a receiver but, YOU know i
thought maybe his size could have a negative impact on
(57:38):
him being, you know a sort of full time volume.
Type RECEIVER now i also think, That yet and it's.
So funny this takes nothing away From, from lockett but,
you know so often team, scheme quarterback there's a lot
of factors that go into why guys are successful and why.
Guys aren't but he had great speed and. Great quickness
(57:59):
and when You Had russell wilson for, those years and
We know russ through a great, DEEP ball i can
just picture a lot of plays where he ran post
routes and just got over at the top of the
Defense and russ just laid it out. For him, you
know maybe if he was with a, different quarterback maybe
it doesn't play out. That way but he had tremendous
speed and tremendous short area, of quickness and, you know
(58:22):
for even though he wasn't a, big man that really
and plus the fact that he could line up both inside,
and OUTSIDE and i think IN today's nfl that's a.
Speaker 1 (58:29):
Big deal do you think when you watch tape and
we were talking all last year and you're Watching, the
seahawk did you see a diminishing skill or do you
see a guy the reason they? Cut HIM and i
just for, people wondering it's one hundred percent in financial
that the cap hit, was massive and that's and they
knew that when they.
Speaker 2 (58:45):
Signed it he knew it.
Speaker 1 (58:46):
Was coming but when you, watch him is there a
diminishing skill set or do you still see a guy
that can HELP an?
Speaker 2 (58:51):
Nfl team.
Speaker 6 (58:53):
My, guess is as it is with, most players he's
probably not as vertically explosive as he. Once WAS and
i think the name sure this offense, clearly changed whether
that was by design or just the way it, played
out we Saw That Jackson smith njigbi kind of became
the number one guy beginning about oh what midway through,
the season it became pretty self evident in the way
they ran their offense And who gino looked for in,
(59:17):
those critical high. Leverage, situations so, you know my thought
is That that lockett is not exactly what he was
as a. Vertical dimension could he help. A team i'm sure.
HE could i just don't think it would be the
exact same style that we saw for Years in seattle
when he was truly a vertical dimension to.
Speaker 2 (59:37):
The, offense right what do we want to talk about?
Speaker 1 (59:40):
NEXT week i thought we were gonna spend a lot
of time on offensive line right off the, get go
which we. Will do we want to go wide receivers
or offensive line For. The seahawks raft meets.
Speaker 6 (59:47):
People go wide receivers. Next week i'm still working on.
Offensive line offensive linemen take a lot of time in
because you've got to watch a lot. Of games, you
know wide receivers are a little. Bit different i've seen
a lot of wide receivers.
Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
All right in, general terms real, quick is how is
the wide receiver class?
Speaker 6 (01:00:03):
THIS year i don't think it's as good as in.
PREVIOUS years, i mean you never know how it's going to.
Play out, you Know as i've, WATCHED tape i certainly
have my thoughts and that. Doesn't change, you know a
lot of times you'll see guys who are, you know
draft gurus and who do, mock drafts say so and
so is rising on. THE board i don't, do MOCKS
so i don't do, a BOARD but I mean i
(01:00:24):
KNOW how i see the receivers based on The ones
i've done in talking. To people, you know, most years
people will tell you that there's fifteen to eighteen players
that have first, round grades but of course you have
to draft. Thirty two, this year i'm hearing more that
there's only ten, Or twelve so, you know it's considered
a draft that has a lot of depth, to it
(01:00:46):
but maybe not greatness at.
Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
The top so.
Speaker 6 (01:00:50):
We'll see but, there's look as you, well know you
can always get receivers in. The draft you just have
to get the right one that fits what.
Speaker 2 (01:00:56):
You do but there's.
Speaker 6 (01:00:57):
ALWAYS receivers, i mean more than thirty receivers are shows
and every year in, the draft.
Speaker 1 (01:01:01):
And we'll talk about those guys next week because that
all of a sudden becomes a. Little, priority uh.
Speaker 2 (01:01:06):
THANK you i. Appreciate it we look forward. To it.
YOU know i.

dk but, come, ON man I think i MENTIONED that
i appreciate Duting, in john but we talked about that
at the start of, the SHOW and i spent a
lot of time talking about that in crosspac with New
guys mark. As, WELL today i, can firmly without hesitation tell.
(01:06:27):
You this the folks At The Virginia Mason athletics center

They've had three straight offensive coordinators who haven't been able
to figure out how TO, use dk so maybe we.
Speaker 2 (01:07:29):
Had the most Successful Was Shoanni, Well, waldron, yeah yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:07:33):
That's TRUE like i looked it up to the DAY
because i wanted to make an argument that, You know
grub killed his Career and waldron really killed, his Career
but waldron actually he had a good.
Speaker 2 (01:07:41):
Year, under waldron which bummed me out because that took
my narrative in my.
Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
Hated it when, that happens and shame on me for.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
Doing research.
Speaker 1 (01:07:53):
Let's see We, got okay there's somebody that just keeps
raving about the rise it for me because it's it's
it's one continuous line.
Speaker 3 (01:08:02):
Of, texts yeah there's there's someone on the text line
who's just adamant that this Train for yanni Is very
mariners esque and that the, roster's bad and like trading
for draft picks is like training. For prospects it's like
salary dumping. Or whatever it's a salary. Cap League but
(01:08:22):
ian you can explain it much better.
Speaker 2 (01:08:24):
Than me it's not a salary cap.
Speaker 1 (01:08:25):
Dumping league or it's not a salary dump because if
you're not saving money because you spell, save up you
spend up to. The, cap anyway IN the nhl with the,
salary cap You're not you're not. Saving money you're trying
to save money so you can go out and sign
guys in. The offseason that's The saving you're still spending
the same amount, of money.
Speaker 2 (01:08:45):
You just want to spend it on.
Speaker 3 (01:08:46):
Better, players, yeah exactly that.
Speaker 1 (01:08:47):
That's, all listen this is the start of the twenty
twenty five twenty twenty. Six season what the crack that
are doing? Right Now and i'll just go back and
reference with Lightwiki to softie on his, president's face show
that this is not who and what they want.
Speaker 2 (01:09:04):
To be they are going to be aggressive in. The
offseason the ownership is not a group that is content
with missing.
Speaker 1 (01:09:11):
The playoffs this was their most talented roster probably in,
it underachieved vastly. Under achieved blame. Mc, coach sure probably. Power,
Playing sure i'll be honest, With you i'll say something
that nobody wants. To hear power Play Under. Jessica campbell
has them?
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Been?
Speaker 1 (01:09:28):
Good nope now it's been, better lately, and god last
night it was. Whipped her it was a Great, last
yeah it just took sixty five games to get there,
or whatever but it looked good. Last night every being
back helps and Not having everly for, forty games Not
having yanni for twenty five games or whatever it was
that hurt.
Speaker 3 (01:09:45):
Them, tremendously yeah did You know joey for the first month.
Speaker 1 (01:09:49):
The season joey was hurt for, a While and grubauer
couldn't stop At beach paul from. Center ice right when
you have your when the goaltender you've got to play
has an eight sixty six, save percentage remember about nine
oh one Is out bridge in the league yet good
and you're at eight sixty Six and, grubauer's record and
sometimes goalie records are like, pitching records wins, and Losses
but grubauer's like ten games be low. Five, hundred yeah
(01:10:11):
you're zero to nine and back to. Back games a
lot of reasons this team isn't. Working good the roster construction,
is okay and the young guys are.
Speaker 2 (01:10:21):
Really good so.
Speaker 5 (01:10:24):
This is.
Speaker 2 (01:10:24):
The start this is a.
Speaker 1 (01:10:25):
Needed thing if you wanted to watch a wasted twenty
games with all these favorite players of yours on the
roster for the final, twenty games And Raw rod Yanni
And Raw rod Tannem And ron Rod big rig and all.
Speaker 2 (01:10:34):
THAT stuff i can't. Help you they need to make.
Some moves more moves. Are coming there's there has to
be less than a one Percent chance tannu's Here.
Speaker 3 (01:10:44):

YOU know i don't know, about You but i'm a
little bit annoyed THAT The dk metcalf story came.
Speaker 1 (01:12:58):
Out, TODAY well i mentioned this a. MINUTE ago i
did a little bit of. SNIFFING around i don't like to,
have to, you know jump back into my world, of
yeah covering the team as much as just kind.
Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
Of, pontificating yeah but every now and then it's. Worth it. The,
SNIFFER oh i, sniffed, AROUND snifferrah i will tell.
Speaker 1 (01:13:17):
You This The Virginia Mason athletics center none too PLEASE With,
Dk metcalf and they knew this isn't like it wasn't
like they found Out From tom Pellisero Or adam schefter
that he wanted to.
Speaker 2 (01:13:29):
Get, traded absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:13:31):
But the fact that, he does you know that he
leaked it out or they leaked it out. As agent
whoever leaked it out twenty minutes after a coordinated effort
Between the Seahawks And tyler lockett to have a nice thank, you,
goodbye yep did not. Go, well yeah just you, know
what an absolutely chump move by Dk, metcalf.
Speaker 9 (01:13:51):
Well and look who knows who? LEAKED it, I mean,
i mean obviously it could have been. Dka's camp it
could Have been, Dkay himself it could have been. His
agent it could have been somebody in the facility that
just told them media, that hey, you know did things
just went to hell in a handbucket?
Speaker 1 (01:14:04):
Right, Now dave i'm gonna tell you right now that
it was not it did not, Come, internally okay, well,
YEAH well i bet and HE and i appreciate that out,
of you.
Speaker 9 (01:14:12):
UH TOTALLY i i don't think there's any way for
anyone to actually know that whether or not it didn't
come internally here because there's there's like there's like one
hundred and fifty people that work For the, seahawks, man
okay but.
Speaker 2 (01:14:24):
Like ten of them actually. Know STUFF but I think
i think the point is the, same, that uh.
Speaker 9 (01:14:29):
THEY'RE pissed i don't blame him for, being pissed, you
know whether It's DKs camp. Or WHOEVER and i, WOULD
look i would tend to agree with YOU that i,
would say that's probably if you put a gun to
my head and say where did the leak? Come from
it came from the THE ss dk metcalf uh with
with one, thousand percent, you know almost one hundred.
Speaker 3 (01:14:46):
Percent certainty it's not like. The EXACTLY but.
Speaker 2 (01:14:49):
I just think.
Speaker 9 (01:14:50):
IT stinks, i Mean like i'm sitting here going over
All Of tyler. LOCKETT'S numbers, i mean the guy is
like number two in every major receiving category in. Franchise
history you can argue he's the second best wide stever of.
All time some Would, say DOUG but, i, mean look
it's a three, man race or, excuse me it's a
two man race for number two and a one man
race for. Number One steve largin's, number one and then
It's either baldwin Likely Or. Tyler lockett maybe some folks
(01:15:12):
would throw in Brighton To brian. Blade whatever maybe some
would throw JUST Athletically, Dk metcalf but as far as,
THE accomplishments, i mean Nobody besides largent has done More
for lockett Or. Than lockett and here we are SITTING
About dk metcalf getting. The TRADE so i just think.
IT stinks, I Mean tyler lockett's one of the one
of the great dudes to ever play for, the team
(01:15:33):
Is a Ring of honor member Decade. In seattle awesome
guy to, the media phenomenal dude with. The fans couldn't
have asked for a better dude. TO cover i think
you agree with That Than. Tyler, lockett yeah and and
and here we are y ACTING about dk wanting. To
trade it's. JUST brutal I hate and the words.
Speaker 1 (01:15:51):
Ring of honor WERE what i was told today FROM
the vMac was like that, was, it like this is
a ring of honor guy that you just by doing the.
Speaker 2 (01:15:59):
Just respected and you, KNOW what i think we should
focus it on what you just, said.
Speaker 1 (01:16:05):
Though all the accomplishments in terms of, the STATS and
i would TEND to I Love doug craiers a, little bit,
you know a.
Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
Little Shorter maybe tyler's number two.
Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
All time he is It's it's largent And, it's tyler
and then we can, have debates but It's probably doug
And maybe.
Speaker 9 (01:16:19):
Blades whatever we was here for, eight years lock it
was here for. Ten, years yeah you KNOW what. I
mean he played like twenty forty whatever less games you know.
Around there, BUT yeah, i mean and.
Speaker 2 (01:16:29):
They were that He's a ring of.
Speaker 1 (01:16:31):
Honor guy doug probably should be, as well but they,
but yeah the way he handled himself was just so.
FIRST class, I mean i think, We all i'm gonna.
Be melancholy i'm sure you are two. At times the
days Of The, cliff AVERRILS The, kJ Wrights The, tyler
locketts guys like that that were there were fun guys to,
(01:16:52):
talk TO and i think fans appreciated us talking to
them as well because it wasn't. Just football it was like,
everything right you can just, sit down and those guys
were just so authentic.
Speaker 2 (01:17:01):
And CLASSY and i.
Speaker 1 (01:17:02):
Mentioned this EARLIER when i covered games and, THEY lose
i had my go, to, GUYS, Right kJ Cliff. And
tyler those are the guys because they would come talk,
to you they would talk to, the fans they would
tell you what's. Going on but you also had to
be ready because you know they. Were intel you could, just,
say hey how do you Feel like if you, said
that they'd all three.
Speaker 2 (01:17:20):
Them look at you like. You're Dipstick like i'm not gonna.
Speaker 1 (01:17:22):
Answer that like they they challenge you to be better at,
your JOB and I just I Love tyler lockett watching.
HIM play i got he missed one regular. Season game
he missed one regular.
Speaker 9 (01:17:31):
Season game obviously we're gonna get to all of this
and the BIGGER story i think today unfortunately becomes that
Hecame metcalf angle and what's going. On there, so yeah
we're gonna hit. It Hard mike florio is gonna join
this great day to have. Him on he'll be with
us in about fifteen minutes. From now he was gonna
hop back on with us. Around five petros even gonna
chime in, on this And Then dan bilsman is gonna
hop on for his weekly segment at three forty five
(01:17:53):
and talk about the freaking cracking deals that came.

Speaker 1 (01:17:57):
Going on Man, asks dan do you have Any Players.
Tomorrowland nashville i'm going To ask dangers for his thoughts

about that more than the. Other deals his, Teammate today,
who knows.
