The Mollywhop boys stop by after the Mariners get swept by Toronto, what is going on with Bryce Miller? Is this series just a blip in the radar or something to get concerned about?  What can we expect in the New York series?  Former Mariners and current Yankees broadcaster Dave Sims joins the show to talk about the brilliance of Aaron Judge, the Mariners season so far and what it's like being back in Seattle.  Checking the Textline.  Softy joins for cross talk.

So before the sweep at the hands of the Toronto
Blue Jays, did you Amy go to the games this weekend?

Well, I went to pre Gium on Friday, but not
to the actual game.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Yeah, obviously, like less people right from Canada. I saw
like the Athletic did a big story on that this
morning and so forth. So the Mirrors since getting swept
for the first time this season. The second sweep was
at the hands of the Blue Jays. The Mariners since
that time before getting swept this weekend, they rattle off

in nineteen and seven record after that sweep by the
Sam Francisco Giants, and they get swept by the Jays.
There are five games above five hundred. But maybe, just maybe,
you know what, maybe history repeats itself. Get back on
a roll of all the Yankees coming to town tonight
is a little bit of a tough battle. We'll talk
more about that with both the Moliwop guys coming up
at one t and Dave sims is going to be

New York Yankees. He is back home and probably living
the dream. So and I'm I was happy for Simsey
on a couple levels. One to do that in that city,
that job, that chair is a massive job. He is

a you know he I think he was born in Philadelphia, right,
but he's but he's a New York guy through and through.
And what I liked about it, And you know, we
live in a world where, you know, every group feels
like they're kind of getting slighted. You know, whether it's
a minority group, a non minority group, gender based, age based,

what have you. There's there's many of us all feel
like we're getting slighted along the way. You don't see
many guys getting that job at the age of seventy
or so, which is what he is.

He's seventy.

I'm gonna say, I'm pushing.

But that's my thing. Is it good for him getting
that opportunity at that age when most people at that
age will be retired. He's living the dream and I
just I found him, you know, I know, not everyone
loved his play by play in Seattle. Then sometimes guys
leave and people miss him. Even now a sudden we
miss him, you know. But he stayed true to himself
and he had some of the most iconic calls that

we've had here. Hey hey, now, well, I mean the
Felix perfect game. Yes, was iconic call Cal's home run
to clinch the playoff spot. He I think the thing
with Dave that I really enjoyed when when he was
calling a game. Some listen the mundane one hundred and
sixty two game season. It's probably really hard for a

baseball announcer to, you know, give you that every night.
But I don't think there's ever a big moment that
Dave missed. Like the big moments he stepped up and
performed at a level that is New York worthy and
good for him. He's also one of the nicest guys.
You know. When I when I got into Ward a
couple of years ago, he was the first guy to
reach out to me, and I thought that was really cool.

Thought that meant a ton to me.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Is that broadcaster. Yeah, and you can say it.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
And he'd wanted a couple three times I think at
that point. But He was the first guy to reach
out to me. Greg Bell was number two, Larry Stone
was three, and I'll never forget that, and it was
really cool for guys at that level to do so.
So I just always appreciate David and I'm sure a
lot of fans will be happy to hear from him
and get caught up with him coming up at two o'clock.

To say one more quick thing on that for who
he was following to John Sterling is a legendary announcer.
And to have the city of New York, not necessarily
the most embracing group of people embrace him as much
as they have that is that says how good of
a broadcaster he is, and how good of a duty.

So we I was just talking to Mark James a
minute ago and we're talking about the draft tonight. He's
coming up, coming up, He's coming up.

It's gonna be up to night four thirty. Here we go,
four o'clock. I guess four thirty is a tip off
of the Knicks and Celtics. Anyway, it always reminds me
in two thousand and seven, this this day in two
thousand and seven, when we still had the Sonics and
we were in our old building which is just down
the road here on Elliott. We were in three fifty
one Elliott, and by then the Sonics because they were,

as we've come to find out, one step out of town,
we occupied I want to say, the second and third floors.
The top floor was all Sonics employees. That's where the
Sonics office was on the top floor there, and we
were I was doing a night show then and with
the lease, so it was you know, later in the day,

Gas was doing his afternoon drive show and I was
sitting there with purple sheet and We're watching the the
draft lottery on a TV like a small TV in
our in our sports pit, truly sports pit back then.
But the Sawnics guys were above us, and they were
a little bit ahead of the feed, and like the

longer it went, and I think what they did is
they announced picks you know, four, then pick three, and
at that point they're like going bananas upstairs, like you
could hear them jumping up and down, jumping up and down.
And because remember that was the Greg Odin Kevin Durant
draft YEP and the feeling was that there honestly were

(05:26):
two guys that would be franchise cornerstones for a team,
Greg going to be one and Durant two. And then
there was a small debate at which guy you would
take one and which guy you would take two. But
when like all of a sudden, they hadn't announced who's
got the third pick yet, and I remember that all
of a sudden, we're hearing like this massive celebration above us.

I should bring this out of purple shet. You probably
remembers that were sitting there like, well, they got one
of the top two picks, and sure enough, then they
go to the break and like you could just upstairs
and go down us they're going crazy. And really, then
when you got picked two or one, when you were
in the final two, you won the lottery because there
were franchise changing players at that point. I remember thinking

to myself, well, maybe this just changes things, Like maybe
this is something that's like they're going to get one
of these two cornerstones, one of these two absolutely epic
players are going to get one of these two guys.
Maybe that helps keep the Sonics in Seattle. And as
it turns out, they ended up getting Kevin Durant. Greg
Oden goes number one. Durant obviously has had a Hall

of Fame career. Odin was beset by injuries. I do
feel for Greg od I was doing the TV stuff
for Portland then going back and forth. Good dude worked hard.
If you would have stayed healthy, would have been really special.
And I was there the night he fractured his leg
and it was not a pretty sight, like it was ugly,

and you know, I just I look back on this, dude.
I feel bad for him. But the Sonics get Kevin Durant,
and we're thinking and the celebrations going, and they're like,
there's this little bit of hope, like hey, maybe just
maybe with a franchise changing player, maybe this franchise gets
a boost of life. Maybe somebody else comes in and

takes it from Clayton who knows. Right, we hadn't started
the We were still a year away, probably about ten
months away from the start of the trial and all that,
and lo and behold, we got one year of Kevin
Durant and he was gone and that was it. Thanks
for coming. But I was looking back on it because
there's always guys you look at the number one overall
picks in the NBA draft, And you know Mark was
bringing up earlier, like it just feel like Cooper Flag

feels like a Utah player. Well, yeah, white guy going
to Utah. Sure we can connect the dots, but Cooper
Flags like a probably Like if you look at the
draft guys this year, there's one guy, it's him, and
then it's kind of a crapshoot. The two kids from
Rutgers are both there. I like Bailey better, but that's

just me. But Bailey looks like off brand Kevin Durant.
Probably it's going to take a year too, but boy
six' ten. Skills, yeah, Right broom's probably a twentieth overall
pick who was the co player of the, year depending
on who is. Voting but after, that it's just kind
of a and the weird thing this year it's the
same as. Always this is how THE nba is. Going
there's a bunch of freshmen coming, out no, sophomores no,

juniors and then a bunch of fourth and fifth year.
Guys because, nil so the draft is very. Different when
we get AN nba team, back it's a very very
different looking thing than it used to. Be but you

now he's a big part of it, regardless but without
those two, guys that's a very important part of your.
Staff you're thinking that's your number two or your number. Three,

well he's pitched like at number two al right over
those last two. Games that was very. Clever please give
me my own radio. Show there is no doubt That
Bryce miller has the, talent but that's my biggest. Concern
those first two, games they were the better baseball team
and they just happened to, lose and that's. Frustrating It's
sunday that gives me the biggest, worry because, boy they
need that guy to be.

like you guys, said a little bit of regression to
the norm the THING i would actually be almost concerned, About,

could have got swept in the previous series before they
came home Against toronto like that's but they, didn't which
is probably the sign of a good baseball. Team but

the team playing out of the minor league ballpark almost
did the same thing to, them and if not for
a couple of miraculous, Comebacks, chris are they just kind
of relying too much on these late inning heroics at,
times because it feels like that's kind of been their
thing this, year not killing somebody start to, finish but
just kind of coming back at the end with some clutch. Hits.

Yeah, sure there's been a few opposites of, that where
you have the fourteen nothing in the thirteen to one,
winner whatever the heck it. Was but they certainly are
relying on late inning heroics and that's a little bit.
Scary by the, way what An apps disaster it is
to be playing baseball games In. Sacramento everything about those
games and that production was as minor league as, possible

and that's an insult to minor league, production If i'm
being completely honest with. You, yeah they've got to start
playing a little bit better in those early. Innings it's

Two you can't just rely on Rowdy teles to hit
late home. Runs you can't rely on bullpen's completely, imploding
which Their oakland, bullpen which is a good, bullpen imploded

a few times in that. Series Caleb ferguson is normally
a very very good, reliever did not have it whatsoever
in That sacramento. Series, yeah they've got to start playing
a little bit better and you, know getting out to
leads and letting the bullpen not have to have so
much wear and. Tear the starters just are not getting
deep enough into. Games they've got to start playing a

little better in the early because there's only so much

Think that there's for me watching these, games there is
a huge concern not just with the fact that they
are reliant on late inning, comebacks but the manner in
which these comebacks are, occurring, which Like chris, mentioned involved bullpen,
implosions but not just your classic bullpen, implosion a bullpen
implosion that involves guys just, walking you, Know Miles, master

Bony Leo revas to turn over the lineup and get
to The mariner's handful of adequate to above average offensive.
PLAYERS i, mean the sequencing has worked out very very,
well often in The mariner his favorite and that's. Fine
those wins bank and it doesn't, matter and they don't
have to be the best baseball team in the. World
it is just something to keep an eye on moving.

Forward in my. Opinion all, right let's talk About Bryce.
Miller then let's go Back chris and jump in that
that that would be the. CONCERN i mean, that you,
know we've our, Buddy Joe sheen comes on Every. TUESDAY
i think on a number of occasions he's kind of
expressed to us that he thinks he might be their best.
Guy that was last, year this, year you, know two
and four five two two, era he's he's getting knocked

(21:31):
around a little. Bit what what do you see that
concerns you? Most and do you think there's a health.
ISSUE i do think there's a health.

Speaker 8 (21:37):
ISSUE i know he's brought up he said he's not
feeling right at the end of that. GAME i think
it's his back which was got which was brought up,
earlier and it kind of explained some of these, numbers
like he's just not fooling hitters at. All he's only
getting a chase right right now of twenty four point two,
percent which ranks in the bottom nineteenth Percent island. Baseball
he's also issuing too many, walks like twelve point one

(21:59):
percent walk rate is really. Bad that's in the bottom
fifteenth percent of the base in. Baseball excuse. Me average
exxi velocity of ninety one miles an hour again shows
that he's just not fooling, hitters and when he's getting,
ahead he's just not getting those. Strikeouts his whiff rate
of twenty three, percent it's a little below, average but
it's not an abhorred, number but a strikeout percentage of
twenty percent that's just not good. Enough that is not

going to get the job. Done SO i think it's
a bit of health and then it's just some command
issues as. Well and it's worth pointing out That miller
had command issues in the minor. Leagues they didn't show
up whatsoever in twenty twenty three or twenty twenty. Four
sometimes there's some regression in terms of, that or ascension
in terms of. THAT i guess in that, Case i'm

not super worried About Bryce. Miller in the long, TERM
i think you got to think about nil stint. HERE
i think with the fact that you can skip your fifth,
starter the fact that you have Some thursdays off, Here
i'd be really tempted to go with a four man
rotation for at least a couple of turns through.

It now that means half of your rotation and Is.

Emerson hancock And Logan, evans which is an ideal but
for both the long term future Of Bryce miller and
the short term as, well because you really want this
guy healthy over the. SUMMER i think it's something you
got to, Consider.

Nathan, YEAH i really think the issues that you're seeing With.
MILLER i won't try to be a doctor and try
to analyze WHAT i think might be the cause of
the command. Issues but the command issues just watching him
pitch are what stand out to, me and everything else
flows from. That he's not able to get quality strikes
or even quality. Balls he's not when he gets guys

(23:33):
in two strikes counts because his command has suffered so
much this.

Year you're.

Speaker 7 (23:37):
Not when he throws a ball it's six seven eight
inches off the plate as opposed to a darting two
seamer or that nice rising four seamer he, has it
just explodes outside the upper end of the strike. Zone
so it's all coming back down to. Command for, me
his stuff looks mostly. Fine it's just the command stuff
and then the walks and then not the opposite side
of the coin of when he misses six to seven

(23:59):
eight inches, out is he misses six seven eight inches
the other, way and then it's in the middle of
the strike zone and maybe that Bald George springer hit
will come down during our, show BUT i don't think
that it has come down. Yet so that's the to,
me it's just all command and it stands out in
such sharp relief to the way this whole rotation, pitches
where they command the strike zone so, beautifully and To chris's,

(24:19):
point the way that he's pitched since he's come up
to the major. League so it just makes me think
that he's mentioned how sore and how he doesn't feel
right physically at least two or three times after it
starts this.
