Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now from the Star Rentals Sports to us your ninety
three point three kJ RFM sports headlines.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Headlines are brought to you by Frost Brewed Course Life.
Anders choose chill.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Oh you bet, I choose chill.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
That's Friday. It's now, Oh my god, running around today.
Let's go. Let's start first with the baseball team winners yesterday,
salvage one of three against the Yankees. Anders. You know
the question coming? Uh?
Speaker 3 (00:30):
The answer is no, I don't even know if you'd
ask it.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Okay, we'll get back to that in a second. We've
got college football on the docket. Tonight's three really interesting games.
Stanford Syracuse at four thirties say, why do we care
about that? Well, Stanford's gonna open up acc play. They're
from the Bay Area in Syracuse, New York. Four point
thirty on ESPN. HM, I just say go Orange Illinois
(00:55):
Nebraska number twenty four and number twenty two in the country.
Illinois twenty fourthsco hosting is number twenty two. Both teams
are unbeaten. Big ten Ballots matchup tonight five o'clock on
Fox and then the late game on the CW network.
San Jose State three and Oh Washington State three and
oh coming off an Apple Cup win. The definition of
a trap game, ladies and gentlemen, The definition of a
(01:16):
trap game in that way.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
Not just for cook fans too, because Greg Coast or
Greg Bell just picked for factor fiction.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
The under in that game.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
So if anyone is trying to get some juice in
the game, that's another way.
Speaker 5 (01:26):
Those two offenses. Okay, okay, you do you, Greg, You
do you? Fella, Yeah, you do you. So that's Tonight's
seven o'clock on the CW. Husky is tomorrow first ever
Big ten game Conference game four o'clock kickoff right here
on nine three point three KFM, course Softy and the
Hawks at noon with the four hour pregame extravaganza. Some
guy named Otani is a fifty to fifty guy first
(01:47):
time ever in the history of baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Somebody told me how.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
He did Yeah, did you see how he did it?
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Six for six, three home runs like I know, and
RBIs two stolen bases.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
My god, just sick, just sick. The Marors should go
get a player like that. I heard those guys have
on your team. You know, those are guys good to have.
One take, hot take Seahawks on Sunday against Miami. We'll
break down the great coaseel later, waiting on the injury
reports to come out and see who's and who's out.
We know that Tua is out. We're waiting on Moster
it's probably out as well. We'll see what the Seahawks
(02:20):
injury report looks like as well. Let's start our Football
Friday show right now as.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Part of our relentless coverage of the NFL. I'm your
home for the twelfth Man, probably President Washington State Beef
Commissions Football Friday, probably brought to you by the Washington
Beef Farmers and Renchers be.
Speaker 6 (02:40):
It's What's for Dinner?
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Football Friday is on with the in for nets Bud.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
It is indeed a football Friday and watching State Beef
Commission Football Friday. What's for Dinner?
Speaker 6 (02:55):
All Right?
Speaker 2 (02:56):
We got a lot going on today for those who
didn't get the running joke with Andrews and I, and
we also bring it up with the Mollywop guys every Monday.
So the Mariners do win yesterday, they pull, Now this
is an interesting thing. They pull to within two games
of the final wildcard spot, which is right now held
down by two teams. Detroit Minnesota are tied. Both are
(03:19):
eighty and seventy three, the seventy eight to seventy five.
But that number actually Anders is, as we all know,
three games back because they don't hold a tiebreaker over
either one of those teams. Do the Mariners. So nine
games left to go, three games back of two teams
in the wild card the other race, if it is
(03:39):
such a thing, which it really isn't, they're five behind
the Astros right now and with nine to play, and yes,
three of those are against Houston. But even if the
Mariners were to sweep this weekend, if they were to
sweep all three games against the Texas Rangers, and if
Houston loses all three against the Angels, the Mariners are
still two games out out with three in Houston coming up.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
And uh.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Yeah, you could get a sweeping game up. So that's
the six game winning streak. Is that really going to happen?
In the six game losing streaks for the Angels? Okay,
So that's why I under said, That's why Anders said
no in terms of them, I saw Caulkins wrote the
column this morning in The Times oh, you know they're
still good. Yeah, they have a chance.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
The test man eye tests.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Well, you know when yesterday was a weird one, they
jump on a Yankees team that that that probably was
feeling the hangover effects from clinching the playoff berth the
night before, and so they're kind of hanging around and
they're they're all but done in the Al East. They've
clinched the playoffs, but they've all they're all but they're
four games up. Uh so they're they're fine right there.
(04:44):
They jump on it for three early, they didn't score
again and held on for a three two win. So yeah,
even even in a positive day, the eye test doesn't
really give you a lot of excitement, right Like, it
doesn't give you a lot of enthusiasm along the way. So,
uh so that was that was the Mariners. We moved on.
I did even mention this day too of Cracking training
camp underway. We'll have a daily power play at one
forty five.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Night, have a Crack and player joining us at one
forty five.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Well, you work on that film. That would be fan
flip fantastic to get that done. Their first preseason game
is Sunday, seven o'clock on nine to fifty on the
AM dial. Also, I move on Kong TV, so preseason
game number one. We've got football, we got hockey, baseball,
stretch run college football. There's so much to get into
today this. I love our Friday shows. We always joke
(05:27):
about the unofficial start of the weekend with Funds at
two o'clock.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
I think Football Friday better than anyone else on the stage.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
I just we we this just roll run down what
we do, and it's pretty damn good. Daniy O'Neil's going
to join us here in about ten minutes. His week,
we visit the best sports writer you'll get to sports,
best sports writing you'll get from New York on Seattle Sports.
But Danny's I love Danny's insight, covered the Seahawks as
a beat writer for years and obviously worked in the
radio business for US as well. We'll get his thoughts.
(05:53):
Also kind of wrap up the Apple couple, look ahead
to Northwestern Washington. He's a uale ums. We'll get to
that coming up with Danny at twelve twenty, and then
we sink our tea into things big time. Greg Cosell
joins us his weekly visit one o'clock today, can't wait
for that. We'll break down Seattle Miami. We're gonna spend
some time talking about Geno Smith and his start to
the season as well, and Anders, you and I both
(06:15):
know there's only one thing that great can tell us,
and what.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Is that say?
Speaker 2 (06:21):
So let's just see what the tape says. Whatever the
tape says about Geno Smith will find out. No, Tua,
Skyler Thompson. They've got a couple young edge rushers. They
do like to run the football. They want to get
guys out in space, especially their running backs, whoever's healthy,
whoever's not.
Speaker 6 (06:35):
So.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Cosell breaks down the Seahawks and the Dolphins coming up
at one today, and then our man Rob rang two o'clock.
Just after two o'clock or so, we'll check in with
him and get a preview with the college football weekend
starting tonight, looking ahead to the games tomorrow as well,
and with Rob. If you're new to this show, if
you're new to us, Rob does it in a kind
of a fun way. He works for Fox sports dot
Com also scouts for the CFLSBC Lions, but mein Gig
(06:59):
is working for s foxsports dot Com. He is our
draft insider, our draft analyst.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Better than anyone else, I'm telling.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
You right now. But he's so good. He's so good. Yeah,
I would like to throw one or two curveballs at
him in our conversation.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Just to see how much he really is prepared.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
And it's just not it's just in the mind.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
He knocks it out of the park every time.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
It's crazy. So we'll talk to him about the big
games this weekend. Who to watch? I think, you know,
for Seattle if you're a Seahawk fan, never too early
to think of the draft when you're watching some of
these college games, and guys you want to look for,
probably defensive lineman and offensive lineman. You can't never have
enough of those guys. Maybe an inside linebacker two as well.
So we'll break that down with Ranger today. Too big
weekend for everybody. Obviously, Washington opening up big ten play Northwestern.
(07:40):
They have that game at home, four o'clock, perfect time.
I don't know what fans think they're going into games.
I don't think there's a better time for a college
football game than four o'clock.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I like the twelve thirty. I do like the twelve thirty. Yeah,
that way you can you get a little bit of
like an early morning breakfast little tailgate action, if you will,
into that kind of stuff, and then you still have
like kind of the primetime games after that.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
But I think four o'clock is a close second for me.
Close second.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Close.
Speaker 7 (08:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
For seven o'clock, no, I.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Mean, I don't mind it as much as a lot
of others do, but getting done at eleven pm is
not ideal, especially driving home from Husky Stadium.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
So we have a we have a mighty one o'clock
kickoff for the for the Worth Pirates tomorrow night. That's
a perfect time. You just set tailgate. That's a perfect tailgate.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Yeah, and it really is kind of perfect.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Get a little little early morning tailgate at the game
game back. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, So we got all that
going on in Washington. We'll let Softy and Fain take
that over. But Historic Day tomorrow, I like it or not,
enjoy it or not, it's the reality we live in now.
But Historic data tomorrow with their first ever game conference
game in the Big Ten, fairly soft landing for Washington
(08:44):
Jetfish's crew to get back on track as they take
on Northwestern tomorrow over at Husky Stadium. All Right, we'll
take a break, we'll come back. Danny O'Neill is going
to join us. We'll talk Mariners, we'll talk Seahawks, we'll
talk Husky's Apple Cup and much more. We'll kind of
run the full gamut with our guy Danny O'Neil joining
us next to on a Football Friday, brought to you
by the Washington State Beef Commission. Watch for dinner beef
(09:04):
of course, of course, Beef for Dinner a ninety three
point three KJFM.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Now back to the Washington State Beef Commissions. Football Friday
with the inf NEETs on your home for the NFL
Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
And indeed it's a Football Friday by the Washington State
Beef Commission. He inf that's with you. Anders back there
running the show, joining us right now on the Beacon
Plumbing Hotliner. Good friend, Danny O'Neil, Hello, sir, how are you?
Speaker 8 (09:40):
I'm good? How are you doing? Ian?
Speaker 2 (09:42):
I'm good? Happy Friday, Happy Week three, Wait Week three
of the NFL. Week Week four of the fastest sport
in terms of how it flies by and anything else.
We talk about college football and a lot to get
to our baseball team. We'll touch in on that in
a second. Let's start though.
Speaker 8 (10:00):
Let's start give you some congratulations.
Speaker 9 (10:05):
There are two congratulations that are in order. First of all,
congrats on the Apple Cup win.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Thank you. I played hard. I played hard. Both teams
played hard, but I played harder.
Speaker 8 (10:15):
It was.
Speaker 6 (10:15):
It was good for the Cooks.
Speaker 8 (10:16):
Congrats on the gig. Congrats on the new hockey gig.
Speaker 9 (10:19):
And I was reading the story that Jeff Baker put
out for for the Kraken, and I thought.
Speaker 8 (10:24):
It was so cool.
Speaker 9 (10:24):
I'm always really excited to hear about people getting a
chance to do something that they've worked toward and dreamed
about since they were young. And it's really cool. I'm
really excited for you, man.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Yeah, I really appreciate that. Danny, thank you. And thanks
to Jeff. I know he's not listening, he's the training
camp going on day two today, but I appreciate him
talking to my mom and I mean, that's sport and
stuff is so important to her and my family and
and you know, that was kind of something we grew
up with with the Canadian roots and our family. So yeah,
it was. Uh, it's the hardest thing has been sitting
(10:57):
on it for like the last two and a half
months since I left Fox not being able to say anything,
but they're trying to get everything down. We still have
some work to do in terms of filling out the
rest of our analyst staff on the Krack and Hockey Network.
It's fun and exciting though. They brought it all in house,
and they brought some really good people over from Root Sports,
and I think I think fans will notice a big
(11:17):
difference in terms of the level of production and how
it looks. And that's not as slight on Route Sports.
It's just new graphics, new production, a few new cameras,
with cracking kind of backing it financially now as opposed
with a third party, they're able to invest more and
I think I think the fans will enjoy it. Plus
it's weird. It'll be free and over the air, which, Danny,
(11:38):
we don't get a lot of free these days in sports.
Like if you watched the Apple Cup last week, you
were either a subscriber to or a brand new subscriber
to the Beautiful Peacock Network. My friend.
Speaker 9 (11:48):
Yeah, But one of the things that's interesting is there
are a couple of teams that are doing this now.
Speaker 8 (11:52):
The Phoenix Suns.
Speaker 9 (11:53):
Yes, pretty aggressive in putting their games out free over
the air. I know that there is a trend to
it's not just put it on pay subscription model, but
put it on multiple across multiple different subscription models, so
you're having to piece together five and six of them.
Speaker 8 (12:13):
But I'm really curious to say.
Speaker 9 (12:14):
Look, I've had the experience of covering Todd l Wikiy
since shortly after he took over with the Seahawks and
have watched what he did both in launching the Sounders
and then landing the Kraken, and I think that the
way he prioritizes the fans and the fan experience is
something that is truly unique, Like he has a gift
(12:36):
in that regard.
Speaker 8 (12:37):
I'm just I'm really excited for you personally, but I'm
also excited to see what you guys build.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah, thank you. I appreciate it. I you know, I
hate always turning it into you know, something versus the Mariners.
But I think when you mentioned Todd, I remember one
thing last year. It was probably December. He was meeting
with a number of season ticket holders and or sponsors, supporters,
you know, people that really kind of were behind the
(13:03):
hockey team, and this is a weird thing in today's world, Danny.
He was wait listening to them. And the big thing
that and I heard about this meeting from a number
of people, and the genesis of it was, Hey, we
can't keep going down this road of making, of asking
our fans to pay big money to watch a game
(13:24):
in the arena and all the stuff that goes into that.
And then hey, if they're watching a road game or
not making every home game, now we're asking them to
dip back in their pockets and pay for more than
they already are with their cable or whatever it is.
And he he heard, he listened, you know, And that's
that's one of the big complaints of the baseball team
here is you don't listen to the fans like you
just kind of operate in this this bubble somewhere, whereas
(13:46):
Todd's very accessible and accountable. But uh, yeah, you mentioned Phoenix.
I think the Utah Jazz of all teams, like weird
to think that. I say that I've worked there, worked
for them, but they kind of took that step a
couple of years ago with some of their TV broadcasts
as well. They've always had kge as but they kind
of went away from some of that. It feels like
it's the way to go Peacock and streaming and whatever.
(14:07):
Streaming has its in my mind, we talked about this yesterday, Danny.
It has its place out there, but maybe it's not
a primary place for the sports fan and the consumer.
Speaker 9 (14:17):
Well, look, you're just asking people to support it. And
when you mentioned Todd and listening, you can view your
fans as customers, which I think is how is how
Todd really looks at it, is that these are people
we want to support what we're doing. We need to
give them a product that they will feel good about
(14:38):
and that will make them become an even more passionate
customer and advocate for us. And the other way to
look at it is to view your fans as a resource,
and the question becomes how much can I get out
of them? And how much can I get out of
their allegiance. And it's a subtle difference, but it's an
important one. And for years, when I've heard people complain
(14:58):
about the lack of fans support among PAC twelve fan
bases specifically is basically this was kind of Larry Scott's
whole thing was, Ye, look our fans aren't passionate enough.
Speaker 10 (15:09):
On the same level that the SEC and the Big ten.
Speaker 8 (15:12):
Are, and that limits what we're able to do because
they just don't care as much. And I'm like, you're
blaming the.
Speaker 9 (15:19):
Customer for your product as opposed to saying we need
to provide a product that will make our fans as
passionate as in these.
Speaker 8 (15:29):
Other markets to.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Go ahead.
Speaker 9 (15:33):
No, it's a it's a it's a really, it's a
it's a it's.
Speaker 8 (15:35):
A very important difference.
Speaker 9 (15:37):
And I know when Todd came to the Seahawks that's
he saw his obligation is the first thing we need
to do is start selling out our home games because
that keeps opposing fans from coming into our building and
having a significant swath of it.
Speaker 8 (15:49):
We need to build that that support in our community.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Danny sus you said that two things jumped out one
and the first thing, like, you know, selling out your
building and not having other fans come in because you know,
the Husky Stadium, you know, renovation of the Kingdome Husky
Stadium into into Lumenfield to quest whatever we called it
back then, that was a big thing, you know last
year for the first time, and you would have been
startled all the game, the probably hundreds of games you
(16:14):
covered at that stadium over the years, you would have
been startled, because I'll tell you right now, I was
the last couple of games when San Francisco and Pittsburgh
fans took over Lumenfield. It was it was disturbing. That's
what Seattle fans have done to others. You and I
traveled together for a lot of years and we'd go
in and it's like, did these guys ever play the
early Pete Carroll days? They ever play a road game?
(16:35):
The answer is no. And that's what it was last
year that spurred I think as much as anything we
all talked about all the media guys like this, this
could be hard for Pete to survive this like because
we're people starting to turn the apathetic whatever it was.
And they made the move and they brought in Mike
McDonald and they I'll just go back to two thousand
and nine, right, two thousand and nine, win that disaster,
the Jim More hiring and Lywickie was in charge, and
(16:57):
what you just said, he he was knocked to deal
with that for one more year at whatever expense and
whatever it cost. It was because he didn't want his fans,
the Seahawks fans, to have to endure another year of
Jim Mora.
Speaker 9 (17:10):
Yeah, it takes guts to make those sort of calls.
And looking back to that last December with the Seahawks,
it did you kind of knew they're not a bad team,
but they're definitely not a good team and if they
get into the playoffs, they're not going to win a game.
There is this is about what they've been for the
past five or six years, and you could definitely feel
(17:30):
that that sort of ebbing. And I do get the
sense that there is there is a different excitement now.
They haven't played anybody yet, and I don't hope they'll
be playing anybody on Sunday, but there is sort of
that possibility of we're not sure.
Speaker 10 (17:44):
How good this team could be.
Speaker 8 (17:45):
They got a shot to be pretty good.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
I think Danie O'Neil joining us that Larry'scott conversation or
that comment you made is interesting. That pissed me off
every time I heard that, and even when I hear
other people say that, and I and here's why, because
I think to myself, Yeah, if you want to if
you want to go down the road of Stamford with
a one third full stadium most weeks. If you want
(18:07):
to go down the road of the apathy that exists
in Berkeley and has for years and years. If you
want to go down the road of all those awful
teams at Colorado and nobody went to those games for
a while until they hired Don There's still not a
good football team, but at least people are going. If
you want to use some of those UCLA playing in
a three quarters empty Rose Bowl, et cetera. Okay, I'll
(18:30):
dance with you, But then you're also not paying attention
to Otson Stadium, which is full every week, Rice Echols
which is full every week, Husky Stadium, which, if you know,
if they give you any reason to go, it's if
not full, you're talking, you know, sixty five to seventy
that whatever it would be every week. Cougar's are good.
Martin Stadium, despite the fact it's nine hundred dollars for
(18:50):
a hotel room. When they're good and humming, they're playing
a good opponent, and they're playing at a like that place
is going to you're telling me there's no passion out here.
There's passion, but I think what you said. It has
to be a two way street, and the PAC twelve
no longer exists. But there's not a lot of passion
in West Lafayette for football for Purdue last I checked,
or Indiana and Bloomington for football, though they're better this year, right,
(19:12):
So don't why we always picked on the PAC twelve
for that? I never quite understood.
Speaker 9 (19:16):
Yeah, I completely agree, and I would go a step
further because you're You're much nicer than I am, And
I would say, well, if.
Speaker 8 (19:22):
You feel that way, Larry, how about you take less money.
Speaker 9 (19:25):
Because you're getting paid more than the guys that run
those conferences, and you're justifying it based on a television
network that you can't even get in half the.
Speaker 8 (19:33):
Households that live within your conference's footprint.
Speaker 11 (19:36):
So maybe you should be giving.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Us some money back. And meanwhile, the headquarters in downtown
San Francisco the most expensive office space in America.
Speaker 8 (19:47):
God, because San Francisco is the media is a media headquarters.
Speaker 9 (19:51):
We should have known. We should have known. He is
a single tennis player. At his core, he's a singles
tennis player. And what you know about singles tennis players,
they think.
Speaker 8 (20:00):
A lot about themselves.
Speaker 11 (20:01):
They don't have a.
Speaker 10 (20:02):
Big view of the community.
Speaker 8 (20:04):
And how were they? They are the divas of the sports.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
World, Dandy and Neil, Are you telling me he wasn't
even a good mixed doubles partner? Is that what you're
telling me? I have I've never.
Speaker 9 (20:13):
Watched the man play a look at tennis, but I
have a sense that he'd be.
Speaker 8 (20:17):
The kind of guy that.
Speaker 9 (20:17):
Will put his hands on his hips and glare at
his partner after a misshot.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Oh god, no, wonder we are where we are right now?
Let's let's okay. I've asked you this a few times
and here we go again. But as a Husky alum,
as a as a fringe media member but longtime media member,
and a steam journalist, all those things rolled up into one.
What are your emotions as you get ready for wait
for it, your conference opener tomorrow as a Husky against
(20:45):
the Wildcats not of Arizona Northwestern.
Speaker 9 (20:50):
It's it's a problem because you've got a conference with
two schools whose primary color is purple, and this is
this is aesthetically displeasing, it's ugly. I feel at some
point we should have some sort of game to decide
who gets to have purple as the dominant color.
Speaker 8 (21:08):
And the other team is going to have to take
it as a secondary.
Speaker 6 (21:12):
It is.
Speaker 8 (21:12):
It is strange. And I was trying to figure out Northwestern.
Speaker 9 (21:17):
Is the blank of the Big Ten, Like what PAC
twelve program from our former conference, the twelve members, what
school would they be? What are they at the equivalent of?
And I started with Stanford because I was like, they're
the nerds, right, Northwestern, smallest school in the conference.
Speaker 8 (21:35):
But Stanford's been pretty good.
Speaker 9 (21:37):
Stafford's gone to three Rose Bowls in the past twenty years.
Speaker 8 (21:41):
And then I think, I think they're cow. I think
they're Cow. Yeah, the good school, but the men. And
I looked a little more.
Speaker 9 (21:51):
The Northwestern went to the Rose Buwl in ninety six,
which is more recent than Col's been there. But Cols
like had three ten win seasons over the past fifty
years and Northwestern's had four ten win seasons, So I
think that's that's about.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
What they are.
Speaker 8 (22:05):
And yeah, look.
Speaker 9 (22:08):
I'm not super confident Washington should win this game. If
Washington is.
Speaker 8 (22:12):
Gonna get bullet eligible, this is a game they need
to win.
Speaker 9 (22:15):
But Northwestern's two and one, and they were decent last
year and this, This might be a tougher game than
people like myself for imagined it would be going into
the week.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
I thought Northwestern when you're saying that, I was gonna
go Wazoo, I mean we're kind of the northwestern of No, Yeah,
it probably is cal.
Speaker 9 (22:34):
It probably was media wise, legit, Washington State is media wise.
Speaker 8 (22:39):
Washington State is probably the best journalism program in the conference.
Speaker 7 (22:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
Yeah, I mean they might argue with this in Arizona
State with Multra Kronkite, but yeah, I think the ar ed.
Speaker 9 (22:51):
Edinburgh Edmurrow absolutely clears Kronkite.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
That's kind of like saying, listen, we've got Babe Ruth
and yeah, Demagio was good, but he was after Babe, right,
So that's that's what it is. Uh, yeah, you know'
Neil joining us. Yeah, it's probably cal. Northwest is probably
cal and and I thought maybe for a second Ucla.
But UCLA is good in a lot of things, just
not football, you know, like like like they're good in baseball,
they're good in softball, they're good in women's basketball, they're
(23:17):
good in volleyball, men's and women's because they have men's
and women's all. Yeah, it's they're probably cal they're just
kind of there, you know, and every now and then
they'll jump up and have a year. Listen, they're coming
off some hell hellish stuff with the coach getting fired
last year, the alleged hazing situation going on at all
places Northwestern and you know, I just I you know,
knowing someone that's in that program quite well and their family.
(23:39):
It's it. There was a little bit of a witch
hunt that took place. So they're they're battling back the
fact they're two and one that it may not be
a gimme, well, we'll see. It just seems odd to
see your conference openers against you know, against these guys,
and helly, we got that all across the country. I mean,
the conference opener, Danny, what kind of world do we
live in? If USC and Michigan are playing, shouldn't that
be on January first? In the Rose Bowl?
Speaker 6 (23:59):
It's weird.
Speaker 8 (24:00):
I've been to one of those Rose Buls.
Speaker 9 (24:02):
I'm not sure if it was nineteen eighty seven or
eighty eight, and I think it might have been the
Rose Bowl that one time marin Or outfielder Al Martin
claimed to have played in, even though there's no evidence.
Speaker 8 (24:12):
He ever set foot on the USC campus. I mean,
he certainly never played football for the weirder lies that
we've ever had in Seattle sports. But yeah, it's it's odd.
It's gonna be odd just to SD and Michigan play
and tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (24:26):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
And I just I'm trying to find outside of a
factor fiction game we play, I'm trying to figure out
who I want to root for in that, and there's
a lot of teams I'm just not rooting for anymore,
and they ever, you know, like it's just like, can
we have a tie? No, we can't. Okay, we keep going.
Danie O'Neil joining us the baseball team, Yep, there's the
baseball team. Did you enjoy some of the base running
fun this week that we had with Victor Robless and
(24:48):
Julio Rodriguez? Did you join you of those moments?
Speaker 9 (24:51):
Yeah, the ropeless one probably makes me made me more
angry than the Julio one, though I think my initial
reaction is wrong with that. I did not like robolists
just deciding that he's going to try and come home
with the basis loaded.
Speaker 8 (25:08):
I thought that was thought. I thought that was really reckless.
Whereas Julio is. I can kind of it's an unusual
play and he.
Speaker 9 (25:17):
Had a bad reaction in the moment, But I will
say this, Julio.
Speaker 8 (25:23):
Needs to become a better base runner.
Speaker 9 (25:25):
He's the fastest guy on the team and he's a
bad bass runner. Taking away not even putting this, he's
a bad bas runner. And if he wants to be
a great player, and I do think he wants to
be a great player, he needs to.
Speaker 8 (25:40):
Get better at that.
Speaker 9 (25:41):
And if that's being more serious on the basis or
sort of changing some of his approach. He's got a
very happy style of play which works for him. And
I'm not saying I need to see him more walked
in or I want old school football like focus on it.
He's got to be a better base runner. He's a
bad base runner, and it costs this team. It has
(26:02):
cost them. Separate from this, and I don't it was
a bad play. It was a really bad play. And
I think the one thing I jumped to was are
there leaders on this team that that are capable of
showing a young player the right way to approach being.
Speaker 8 (26:20):
On the basis and in these higher stake situations. It
was just it was really unfortunately.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
Well, don't you say Daney with I think if we've
seen nothing and proven nothing from the fifty to fifty
club that some guy named Otani has accomplished after his
six for six just slow pitch softball day yesterday. The
you know, base running isn't just speed, you know, the
ability to read something, read a picture, understand and probably
(26:48):
there's I'm in today's world, probably a lot of pre
scouting that goes in it. This picture is going to
give you an extra half second. Here's when you go
all those things. You can't just rely on pure speed.
Robless is remarkable, I mean, boneheaded stealing home aside the
guy he's twenty five for twenty six stealing bases with
the Mariners like he knows how to steal a base.
(27:09):
It was a just an insanely horrible decision. But also
and Andrews and I talked about this a lot. It
was also a decision probably based on need. Right, if
you have a decent offense, you're not having to do that.
But you don't, so that's what you've got to do.
And he took the matters in his own hand. But
you're right with Julio, because I mean Julio has been
picked off first base a number of times, including an
(27:31):
end of a game. I mean, he does have to
get better. He's the only rea. He's one of the
only reasons. Oh offensively, they're still kind of in it.
So I'll ask you this. Here we are. It is
the twentieth of September twenty twenty four of the year Overlord,
September twenty seventh, when we speak again, Danny O'Neil. The
Mariners will have three games left to play in the
regular season against the Oakland Athletics. Will they be relevant games?
Speaker 9 (27:56):
Yes, They're not going to be mathematically eliminated. I I
believe that they are going to win that series in Houston.
I don't think they're going to get into the playoffs,
but I think they're going to keep Hope alive into
the final weekend.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
And that would be a wildcard more than likely unless
something crazy. Unless unless the Astros just kick it this
weekend against the Angels and Seattle get to sweep there,
they're probably going to be out of the more than
likely out of the the Al West.
Speaker 4 (28:21):
The presenting worst case scenario here where they dank it
just until the final day, but don't get.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
In, and Danny, that is our that is our horror
thought here right, like, don't get in, but just miss it,
and then everything's validated and we're all happy. Now. Good
news is if they anders right, if they were to
get fifty four percent wins, I think that we've projected
that a fifty four percent win total would actually get
them in this year.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
They have to go like nine and one in the
last ten games.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
To do that, they'd have to go they'd have to
go ten and oh, no, nine and oh not actually
even nine and oh doesn't get them there, right, Nine
and oh puts them at eighty seven. Yeah, okay, so
they can't get fifty four.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
Scene is a failure.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
That season is a failure, Danny. It didn't work.
Speaker 8 (29:06):
Even just weird, even by the weird standard that's been imposed.
It's it's strange to look at it. You're like, you're
trying to chase the twins. You've got the Tigers to
worry about.
Speaker 9 (29:16):
Yeah, you've got that that series against against the Astros,
which could provide a little bit of validation and fuel
going into the weekend of it. I there's going to
be some I don't expect, and they've already said that there's.
Speaker 8 (29:29):
Not going to be changes right with the GM.
Speaker 9 (29:31):
I know they didn't make it official, but made it
pretty clear as the story the Seattle Times wrote, But
there should be a lot of conversation about what they
do next.
Speaker 8 (29:39):
Year and how they need to improve this offense.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
What the what in the name of of Alan Trammel
and Lou Whitaker and Cecil Fielder and Sparky Anderson, What
in the hell is going on in Detroit? Like, what
in the hell are they doing there?
Speaker 8 (29:51):
Geez?
Speaker 9 (29:53):
I will tell you look at the ages of those players,
they have a young nucleus. Man like, it's that if
the guys on that team, if you're twenty eight on
that team, you're one of the old guys, and that
that kind of speaks to It'll be really interesting to
watch how another franchise handles getting a young core come through,
(30:14):
because I think that you'll see Detroit, if not this offseason,
then in the years to come, look to augment that
young core, which is what you do.
Speaker 8 (30:22):
Well, do you get the.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Core, That's what you do, then then you start that's
what you start making that Hello Kansas City, Uh, Hello
the camp outside of your forty five year old catcher. Hello,
Kansas City, doing the same thing, right, So all right, Danny,
thank you. Tell people about the newsletter and the great

Speaker 11 (30:56):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (30:57):
Today I put together coach risk.
Speaker 9 (31:00):
Omitter evaluating Mike McDonald's gambling tendencies, using characters from Rounders
to try and describe exactly how Lucy goosey Mike McDonald,
how fresh he was willing to get in the chances
that he's taken. We'll be carrying that forward going through
the season.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Great, Thanks Daniel, we'll talk to you in seven days.
My friend sounds good.
Speaker 8 (31:20):
Take Carian, buy it.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
Danny O'Neill joining us here on the beacon plumbing. I
could talk to him for like hours, man, It's almost
like he's done this before for a living. We'll take
a break. Wrap up our number one on niney three
point three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
Now back to the Washington State Beef Commissions Football Friday
with the Infernets on your home for the NFL Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
I'm gonna ask the same question to you listening right now.
I know it's football Friday. I get that, but we're
gonna the question I asked Danie O'Neil Andrews. Don't answer it,
We'll talk about it at one thirty today. One week
from today we talked to Danny. But one week from
today when we talk to you, Mariners will have three
games left, all at home against the Oakland A's, and
they will have played three in Texas. They will have
(32:07):
played three in Houston against the Rangers and then the Astros.
Everyone's going to have three games left to go in
Major League Baseball as of next Friday. That would include
the Tigers, of Twins, the Royals, everyone else in the
wild card race, and also obviously include the Houston Astros.
(32:28):
So the question at four nine, four to five one
on the Tullamarto text line, when it's game time, it
will they still be playing relevant games with that final
series against the Oakland A's next weekend four nine, four
to five. One Tullomorto text line, when it's.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
Game time, I already know my answer.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Yeah, I know what yours is. Maybe you know, Maybe
I don't, Maybe I don't, I don't. Danny kind of
insinuated they might still be playing relevant games even in
the al West. I don't think that's the case. But
we'll touch in on this a little bit more at
one thirty, you know, as as it was written today
in the paper. Yeah, they're kind of just sort of
(33:06):
in it and win a couple, somebody else loses a couple.
It's a whole different world. But I don't know, man,
it just it just feels.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
It's funny that one New York series can change everything,
because remember we talked to Joe Sheen right before it,
and yeah, it was like, oh, they control their own destiny.
It's that's all you can ask for at this time
of the year, and now they kind of don't.
Speaker 6 (33:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
Yeah, it's it also goes back to something andres that
we talked about in April and may, oh here we go.
Those games counted to uh yeah, I think they do.
So when you came out and were just crappy out
of the gate like you are every year. Those games.
(33:46):
Just think if they would have been a little bit
better in the early part of the season and given
their pitching staff a little bit more offense.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
Where they just didn't collapse in the middle part of
the season. Yes, like those you know, June, July, early August. Exactly,
it's not good.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
All right, We'll get back to football, our guy, great
CoA Sell. You want the very best breakdown of the
Seahawks game this weekend against the Miami Dolphins. All things
Seahawks breakdown Andrews. We can only do one thing here.
What can he do for us?
Speaker 3 (34:19):
And that's we look at the tape and that's all
we can do.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
That's what he's gonna do. He's gonna look at the tape,
our man, Great CoA Sale. Brought to you by Seattle Sider.
That's coming up next ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (34:32):

(35:21):
Mariners in Action, Texas taking on the Rangers, first of
three before they go to Houston on Monday. Still sort
of kind of in it. Maybe not for the division
but perhaps the wildcard two out technically, but realistically it's
three because they don't know any time breakers. Will keep
an eye on the scoreboard there show. Hey, O Tani,
breaking news. This just in really good, really fifty fifty
(35:42):
guy six for six yesterday basically look like the college
baseball player from like a D one school. Yeah, I
just finished up at LSU. What are you doing now?
I'm playing slow pitch softball on Wednesdays. I'm just gonna
go six for six and mash. That's what he did yesterday.
Makes the game look easy, just stupid. He'd be fun
to have here, wouldn't think exactly. Lots of injuries. We'll
(36:02):
get to those coming up a little bit later on,
but right now, let's break it all down with our man,
Great co Cell.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
It's time for Egan's weekly Visit with NFL Films Greg
co Cell, brought to you by Seattle Sider Company on
your home for the twelfth man in the NFL Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
And here we go, Greg co Cell, his week we visit,
Week three of the NFL season and our I guess
our second visit. I missed the first week I was
out of town, So this is our second visit with
mister Cosel Big. Thanks as always a Seattle Sider. By
the way, they got the pumpkin spice Sider down there
right now at the tasting room at the tap room
down there at Seattle Sider, look for you know local
grocery stores as well. Seattle Sider the best going out there,
(36:45):
as well as the light vivid siders too. Greg co
cell Man, Time Flies, Week three of the NFL season.
How are you.
Speaker 6 (36:53):
I'm doing great. You know, I've been grinding away watching
a lot of tape and it's you know, it's only
week three, so I'm still like awake. You know. We'll see,
We'll see how that comes around week ten or eleven.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
Well, let me we're gonna talk about Miami and Seattle
and the matchup as we do every week. I want
to start in a different direction if I can today
with you, because there's a lot of talk in our
city right now about Gino Smith and there has been
really since Russ left he took over. There was never
really a quote competition they thought we thought we'd have.
But you know, by and large, Geno has been, you know,
(37:25):
in that kind of that middle of the pack. He's
been okay as a quarterback. It feels like he's playing
at a little higher level this year. What are you
seeing on tape with Gino?
Speaker 6 (37:34):
Yeah, you know, let me just put that in a
little context because obviously, as people probably know, I watch
the entire league now, I can't watch sixteen games every week,
you know. Unfortunately, there's only a certain number of hours
in a day, and I work most of those hours.
But I still can't get sixteen games in. But I
see a lot, and as the season progresses, I see
(37:54):
more and more, and you know, I'm seeing so many
quarterbacks who drop back, don't have a great for what
they're seeing and they run around. And the league is
getting a lot of those kinds of quarterbacks from college
and they may end up being great quarterbacks. We don't
know the answer to that. But then I watch a
quarterback like Gino Smith, and obviously he's in a new system,
(38:15):
so we had to learn some new things. And he
drops back and for the most part, he knows where
to go with the football. He plays with a sense
of timing. He's willing to make difficult throws, and I'll
give you an example that momentarily and he just looks
like a professional quarterback. And he has enough movement and
mobility that he can get out of the pocket if
need be. He's not a playmaker. He's not going to
(38:37):
make those special off schedule plays where you go wow,
but he has enough movement or he's not a statue,
and he just runs the offense. And look, they couldn't
run the ball last week. And I don't know what
Kenneth Walker status is this week, but you know, they
couldn't really run the ball last week. And we'll see
what happens. But he just looks like a professional quarterback.
Speaker 2 (38:58):
The the evolution or the progression of a quarterback. And
this is a bigger question, but you talk to coaches
all the time around the league and especially during drafts
and everything else. Yeah, you know, Gino just didn't work
back East in New York. It's just for him. It
just and there's a lot of reasons why we're seeing
quarterbacks like like the number one pick from last year
getting benched already, Guys that are rookies this year really struggling,
(39:21):
Like you said, maybe because they don't have a feel
for what they see down the field. Gino Smith in
his you know, early close to mid thirties now finally
seems like he's found himself in two different systems. Waldron
last year, Grubb this year. Should we start getting used
to this greg in a sense? I asked Mike Hongrin
about this the other day because it seems like it's
taking some quarterbacks a little bit longer now.
Speaker 6 (39:43):
Yeah, and then I certainly can't speak to what happened
to Gino Smith back with the Jets where he started,
I think for two years, and then they decided he
wasn't the guy, and obviously he was throwing too many
interceptions and not seeing things. Clearly, we don't know if
what he's doing now could have happened in year five
or six, if he had continued to have been given
the opportunity. We don't know the answer to that. I
don't know Geno personally, so you probably do, but I
(40:06):
can't speak to what's in his head. The development and
maturity of an individual as much as of a quarterback,
those are all factors. But all I know is what
I've seen. And keep one thing in mind. Not only
is this a different offense, but it's a different personnel offense.
They were heavy two and three tight ends under Waldron.
Now they're playing through two weeks anyway, they are a
much higher percentage eleven personnel offense playing with three wide receivers.
(40:31):
That factors in as well, because that makes the passing
game different. So you know, there's a lot going on
here that he's executing well and the throw I was
going to make. And by the way that he could
come out on Sunday and throw three picks. I mean,
you know, it's the NFL. It's you know, these things happen.
You know, we get so caught up. I mean, I
(40:51):
get asked questions, you know, as you know, but everybody, well,
it's two weeks. Is this guy a bus? And I'm like, whoa.
You know we've played two games. Come on, now, you
know this. It's hard to win on Sundays and it's
hard to play really well every single game, so you know,
let's understand that. But you'll remember this play. It was
the first third quarter possession. It was third and seven,
(41:13):
and he hit Smith Nijigba for twenty four yards right
in the middle of the field. Do you remember that play?
Speaker 2 (41:17):
Yep? Yep.
Speaker 6 (41:19):
I mean the Patriots rushed five, They did a boundary overload.
They kind of played a four across three under zone
concept behind it, and Smith had a move away from
the overload pressure, so he slid to his left, which
was really efficient, kept his eyes downfield, and he stuck
a strike on Smith and Ajigba on that bender in
that tight window. Between the two underneath zone defenders. Now
(41:41):
that might not seem like much, but that's really high
level quarterbacking. And then, by the way, that was very
representative of what Ryan Grubb does because that was a
three man vertical route concept on third and seven. Because
of the front that the Patriots presented, he kept Fant
and Charmoney into pass per ten. So it was only
(42:02):
a three man route concept, but it was an intermediate
con essentially a vertical route concept. And that's what you're
going to see more of with Ryan Grubb because I
think that's what he believes in.
Speaker 2 (42:10):
And I'm going to come back to that point exactly
in a second Greg co Sale joining his courtesy of Scaletsider.
I'll tell you what, when that throw was made, the
first thing that jumped out at me and the first
thing I thought of and was a the fact that
he did kind of slide a little bit, just the footwork,
just the ability to kind of keep his eyes downfield.
Oh yeah, but because like just again the experience of
a quarterback that is able to be comfortable in what
(42:32):
frankly has not been a great pocket for him in
the first two games, but two the arm talent we
talk about that all the time, but man, he stuck
that in there. I mean everybody, and I think I
mentioned I think I mentioned this to you. I might
even mentioned to you off the air at one point.
But you know, watching him in training camp with Sam
Hall and not to this is no. I mean, I'm
not a quarterback, you know, Gurul leave that to Humil
and my clone grun our station. But but but just
(42:55):
Neo fights like us standing there at training camp OTA's
in mini camps, Greg, you can tell the difference how
a ball comes out of a guy's hand, and Gino
just had the ball comes out his hand beautifully and
he just it felt like it was a just a fastball,
you know, top corner of the of the hit of
the zone and a hitter had no chance and the
hitters being the defensive backs. But but he just made
a great play on that. I just I love it.
Speaker 6 (43:16):
Yeah, those like I said, when a play like that happens,
because it doesn't look like much maybe too, you know,
because all he did, Hey, he moved a little bit
and he threw it to what looked like an open
receiver when Smith and jig But caught it. But don't
forget Smith and Jigman had a bend around uh An
underneath the fender. The ball, you know, had to be
thrown with timing and anticipation. He couldn't wait till he
(43:38):
till he saw him open in that void. He had
to throw it before that, and he had to move
to his left, reset his throwing platform, keeping his eyes downfield.
I mean, one of my guys in my matchup room,
who was a quarterback, you know, many years ago, when
coached by by really good guys you know, said to me, Hey,
at this point in his career, Caleb Williams just would
have been out of there, you know. And and you know,
(44:01):
those are the things you know. And I'm sure Mike Holmgren,
who knows more about the position than I do, but
believe me, I'm not suggesting I know more than the
Mike Hogwins of the world, but I guarantee he'd be
saying the same thing I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
Yeah. Absolutely. The other thing you touched in on there,
the three verticals and keeping the running back and the
tight end when eleven personnel into block, and that is
something I remember when Ryan Grubb was hired and I
talked about this with Hugh Millon quite a bit that
there was what I think h termed it conservative protection,
and I thought conservatives, Yeah, they're not going to but
(44:32):
it is. It's conservative in the sense that you're keeping
one or two extra guys into block. He did that
at Washington. And you're telling me, when you're watching this
grub offense, you're seeing a lot more of that too here.
Speaker 6 (44:40):
Yeah, because the bottom line is, and I was told
this years and years ago, probably thirty years ago by
I think John Gruden told me this a very long
time ago, and I've never forgotten. It was just one
of those lines, very simple. He said, you have no
pass game if you can't protect. And you know it
seems obvious, yes, but it's you know, it's I mean,
(45:02):
you got to start with protection. You know, if you
can't protect, you don't have a pass game.
Speaker 2 (45:08):
He'll he'll need a little bit of that. I guess
Miami's got a couple of young guys. We probably we
talked about these guys in the spring, right, Chop Robinson,
Mohammed Kamara, a couple of guys that we should be
watching out for.
Speaker 6 (45:17):
Yeah, Robinson's getting some some time. You know. Obviously, defense
now becomes really important for them because it's you know,
Skyler Thompson is going to be the quarterback, so you know, defense,
you would assume, Look, it's the NFL. You know how
it goes, you know, I mean, you know, Thompson could
come out and throw for three hundred and fifty yards.
You never know either way the NFL is these days.
(45:38):
But the point is is that their defense is clearly
going to have to be a big factor now, and
Robinson's getting more snaps he can, he can rush the
quarterback off the edge and they'll probably line him up
I assume. Is it's still going to be Forthlights.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Playing with Yeah, we're expecting that. I mean, who knows,
but that's kind of the expectation now.
Speaker 6 (45:54):
Yes, Yeah, So if that's the case, I mean, he's
he's done fine, I mean, look he's he you know
how this goes. He's a backup for a reason. It's
not a personal thing. He's a backup for a reason.
He's done, okay, but he's going to get tested in
this game and certainly Ryan Grubb and the offensive staff
know that, and they'll do what they feel is necessary
to make sure that the pass rush because they also
(46:16):
have Jalen Phillips, who's a really good pass rusher. You know,
they'll make sure that the pass rush doesn't wreck the game.
That's the critical thing. You can't let their pass rush
wreck the game.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
And I'm looking at the just and again we're two
games in, so there's I'm just looking at numbers. And
this is why i ask you because you've watched some film.
Their defense is fourth in total defense in the NFL,
averaging just two fifty seven yards per game against well
but jumps out of me as the pass defense is
really good, also a top four.
Speaker 6 (46:44):
Here's the way I'd answer that. It's two games, and
keep in mind the last game they played against Buffalo
got away from them pretty quickly and Josh Allen only
threw six passes in the second half. So that's no
knock on their defense. They've got good players. But I
think you know that's stat is a little keewed after
two games because of the nature of the second game
that they played. My guess is if that game was
(47:06):
closer and Josh Allen had to drop back thirty five times,
that stat wouldn't be like that.
Speaker 2 (47:12):
Let me just in terms of they've got a guy
that we know, Ramsey cornerback. Right now, he's still there
and he's hanging around. Used to hit hit DK's best friend.
It feels like every week DK Metcalf has seen an
elite guy on the edge. Patrick Sartan, I because all
his kid last week for New England, who we kind
of saw it yesterday with the Jets, and now another one.
So what will DK, Tyler, JSN and Gino be looking
(47:34):
at with that past defense?
Speaker 6 (47:35):
Well, what's going to be really interesting? And this is
what we don't know the answer to is Ramsey versus
eleven personnel, three wide receivers, which as I said, has
been the predominant personnel package for the Seahawks through two weeks,
and I would assume that's the way they're going to
likely play. I don't think they probably practiced something totally
different and then the game started and then they did
(47:56):
something totally different. So Ramsey has been playing predominantly, uh
not predominantly at times in the slot. But I think
he'll play outside, I really do. I think he'll play
outside this week. He's had some good matchups with Metcalf.
You know, both those guys is you know, play with
an age. I think that both guys will want that matchup.
(48:17):
So I think you'll see that matchup, and I think
I think it could get a little chippy.
Speaker 2 (48:22):
Over under on the number of personal foul penalties on
those two guys combined is three right now, since they
every time they played, every time they play each other, Greg,
there's there's there's flags like every single time. If you
like just guys going toe to toe and battling, it's
a hell of a matchup watching them.
Speaker 6 (48:38):
Yeah, I mean it's it's yeah, and that's what you
like to see. I mean, obviously you don't want to
see any fights, but I mean, two super competitive guys,
two high level players. You know, this is the kind
of game where you make a reputation. It has nothing
to do with money. You know, both guys make a
lot of money and all that, but I mean, this
is a reputation game. You're talking about highly highly competitive athletes.
Speaker 2 (48:58):
Let's sell Greg Selt on his courtesy the Salessider Other
side of the Football. Okay, here's here's where Greg just mentioned.
Sometimes those numbers are deceiving. This number will be the
most deceiving. The pass offense for the Miami Dolphins is
number one in the NFL. Two sixty five point five
yards a game. Why is that deceiving? Well, the guy
that should be at quarterback won't be because he's dealing
with some concussion issues in Tua. So Skylar Thompson comes
(49:20):
in this Dolphins and no most start. It looks like
I think he's going to be missing the game as well.
So how does this Miami offense do you think operate
without the ten?
Speaker 6 (49:28):
And Thompson's played, I mean he started, This goes back
two years because fortunately Tour was able to play every
game last year, and so sad what's happening because he's
such a fun player to watch and that offense is
really fun to watch, and you know, all you hope
is that he's okay. That's number one. The rest is
kind of irrelevant right now. But Thompson has played. He's
(49:49):
he's erratic. But when he did play, because because they
do have that such incredible speed at wide receiver, you
you can't go into this game with the assumption and
well it's it's Thompson. You know, he's not any good.
I mean, he threw some big balls and when he started,
I think the last what three games, including a playoff
loss to the Bills, back two years ago. So you
(50:09):
still have to be really really careful because those receivers,
I mean they can There's only a few receivers in
the league where they just have terrifying speed, and Hill
is one of them. I mean, he just has terrifying
speed and you just have to be really really careful.
Speaker 2 (50:26):
It looks like they like to use that channel a
little bit catch the way he's got fourteen catches.
Speaker 6 (50:32):
He's the other guy that I mean, Waddell too. Obviously,
that's the obvious. But a Chane is really becoming not
only a running back but kind of a movable chess piece.
They clearly want to get him the ball in space.
I'm glad you brought him up because he's a guy
where you can get the ball to him with easy throws,
you know, the kinds of throws that Thompson can feel
really good about. Because, look, Thompson's not going to have
(50:54):
the same sense of timing and rhythm to make those
window throws that to at Tegabai Lowa makes two is
probably the best in the league. And making those kinds
of windows throws off timing, Thompson's not going to be
at that level. It doesn't mean, he'll never make one,
but that can't that won't be the foundation of the
way they play because he's he can't do that the
way too it can. So now they're going to think,
(51:14):
how can I get the ball to my playmakers while
making it easier for Thompson and a Chain is a
guy you can do that with, whether you're talking about
things like jet sweeps, quick screens, swing routes, you know,
he relatively easy throws just to get the ball into
your playmaker's hands.
Speaker 2 (51:31):
The what's the offensive line look like for Miami because
I think that's you know, Seattle's been pretty good. Well,
you know, we're waiting to see him Mafy's health. I
think he should be fine. But like just the Seattle
defense has five sacks and two games, and we'll see
what kind of pressure they GetUp front. Where they're looking
at with that Miami offensive line, you.
Speaker 6 (51:47):
Know, I think ultimately, you know, it's it's a line
where they can you know, I don't want to see
do some damage. I mean, that's a silly way to
put it, but I mean I think that they should
be able to have some good snaps. You know, I
think Derek Hall has looked really good in two games,
and I'm really excited to see him develop. I really
liked him, as you probably remember, coming out of Auburn,
and now he's kind of developing and getting more snaps,
(52:07):
and I think he's a really intriguing player. You know.
Obviously Armstead is still a really solid proceed Is he
hurt by the way? Armstead?
Speaker 2 (52:16):
Sure, I can look it up you going, I'll look
up there there from yesterday. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (52:20):
Yeah, But I think there's some guys that are beatable,
particularly on the inside. I think you can attack. Even
the right tackle I think is beatable. So you know,
these are beautiful guys, which again, you know, don't forget
that the way they normally play offense with with Tua
being so timing and rhythmic based, as good as there
is in the league at that part of quarterback play,
(52:41):
he can compensate and camouflage a lot of weaknesses in
all line pass protection. We don't really know that about Thompson.
And what we don't know too, is how they're going
to play with Thompson versus the way they played with Tua.
Speaker 2 (52:54):
Yeah, arm Set, by the way, limited yesterday, but he
did practice, so he was limited yesterday. Along the way.
Speaker 6 (52:58):
So I mean, you know, but uh, but I mean
you know again, and and is your what's your own
Baker status?
Speaker 2 (53:04):
Uh at perennial hamstring, Greg like hamstring every day, it
feels like. So it's we might see more ty Ree
Knight again.
Speaker 6 (53:12):
Ty Reese Knight. I did him coming out, Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (53:16):
Downhill guy. He looks lost every now and then, looks
like a rookie.
Speaker 6 (53:19):
Sometimes I would agree with that. He was a tackling
machine in college. But I remember doing him and thinking
that even though we made a ton of tackles, that
he wasn't necessarily a great prospect, which obviously was true
based on what we was drafted. Fourth round, I believe,
But hey, you know, you know how the league works.
Next man up is he has to start. You know,
he's got it, he's got to play.
Speaker 2 (53:37):
He does well, it should be a good matchup, and
we'll see, uh, we'll see what happens tonight, as always
in the TV show, Right, we've got a TV show
this weekend. Do you would you that TV show?
Speaker 6 (53:46):
And and it's it's a shame that Tua got hurt
because that would have been a game in our show.
But obviously it's not unfortunately, but uh yeah, no, we've
got there's some good games this weekend. Texans at Vikings
has become a really big game. How about Chargers at Steelers?
I mean two and overs is two and oh both
teams playing old school football. You know, remember the name
(54:08):
Scott Mattlock. You probably don't even know who that is.
Look them up when we're when we're done, and then
you'll you'll see. And then who would have thought the
oh and two Ravens? Who would have thought that? I
had the Cowboys? That is a really big.
Speaker 2 (54:20):
Game, Cowboys coming off of just a SmackDown two where
they got slapped all over the place by the Saints.
And when you say matt Lock, Greg, I'm old. I
think if matt Lock, isn't that the old TV show, the.
Speaker 6 (54:29):
Old TV show with Andy Griffith, I'm AULDI.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
I'm all we can relate to each other, my friend,
I love that along the way, that's absolutely perfect.
Speaker 6 (54:38):
And then who would have thought the Jaguars would be
O and two going to Buffalo for Monday night football?
Speaker 2 (54:42):
The quote from the quote from quote from Trevor Lawrence
last week, we suck right now? Okay, yeah, I guess
I'll wait, do.
Speaker 6 (54:47):
You deal Trevor Lawrence because he didn't play in the
last game of the season last year. I believe he's
as the starting quarterback. That the Jaguars have lost seven
games in a row.
Speaker 2 (54:57):
Ah, not good, not good. Well, we'll look for the
FBN Matt Show. Just hit the little search there on
your on your whatever screen you're using these days, whether
it be cable streaming, what have you.
Speaker 6 (55:06):
You guys better win this week, Ian, because Seattle Detroit
is a game I really want to do in the
show next week. So you guys better win this.
Speaker 2 (55:13):
Week, you know, And I'll pass that along to Mike McDonald.
Greg wants to get that. It's passive, considerate, sir, consider
it passed along right now as we speak. Thank you,
my man. We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 6 (55:23):
Greg. All right, Ian, thanks so much.
Speaker 2 (55:25):

Speaker 1 (55:55):
Now back to the Washington State Beef Commissions Football Friday
with the inf NEETs. But you're hoting for the NFL
Sports Radio ninety three point three k j R FM.
Speaker 2 (56:07):
Seahawk injury report is out, at least the initial one.
There's another one coming out in a little while, but
the initial one comes out out. Channa Nuosu not a surprise, doubtful,
Jerome Baker, Kenneth Walker the Third and George Fan all
this is doubtful. It would suck if you had a
Walker on your fantasy team.
Speaker 3 (56:25):
Oh yeah, really really what did he? Thanks?
Speaker 6 (56:27):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (56:28):
Sorry, just chicking? Okay, questionable for the Seahawks, Kevon Wallace,
Farrell Brown, Boye, Mafe La Viscous Chanalt Junior. I didn't
get into it with co Sel just now, but the
Farrell Brown things. Interestingly, he's talking about all the eleven
personnel they're using right now, and I think a lot
of that is because Brown's not available, yeah, and hasn't
played right, and so I think that's part of it.
You know, Brady Russell has been fine. He's a blocker,
(56:50):
but he's not really much of a pass threat. So
what's his face? The rookie from Michigan, why do I
forget his name? Barner? Barner?
Speaker 3 (56:56):
J J Barner, Yeah, j J.
Speaker 2 (56:57):
Barner, Yeah, he you know, he's still I'm trying to
find his feet along the way. I asked the question earlier.
And we'll get some text a little bit later on.
We'll have a few minutes for text after robbering four nine,
four to five one on the Tulemordu text line. When
it's game.
Speaker 3 (57:09):
Time is one week from today.
Speaker 2 (57:14):
Marriers have nine games left to go, three in Texas
against the Rangers starting tonight, three in Houston on Monday,
are starting Monday, and then three next weekend Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday to finish the season out at home against
the Oakland A's currently five games behind the Houston Astros
in the AL West. Math tells you the simple math
of nine games left not good wildcard wise, though, wildcard wise,
(57:42):
though they are two games behind Minnesota and Detroit. Both
of those teams are tied for the final wildcard spot.
There are four games behind Kansas City, by the way,
which holds down the second wildcard spot. So let's just it. Really,
they're not even going for that right now. It's basically
they're two games out, but they're three games out because
(58:02):
they don't have a tiebreaker over either Minnesota or Detroit.
One of those two teams will be in maybe one
of those. It's basically it's Seattle, Detroit, Minnesota, three teams
battling for one wild card spot. One week from today.
Anderson Hurst, all right, well, we will be talking about
relevant Mariner baseball games one week for today, with three
left to go.
Speaker 4 (58:20):
You know, I actually think we will. My pessimistic tone
over the past couple of weeks maybe would lead you
to think that I would say otherwise. But yeah, I
think that matchup well against the Rangers. As we saw
last week. It's in Texas, which weirdly enough has been
like a pitchers ballpark this year, which I think leads
(58:41):
towards the Mariners. They are not healthy, course seekers, not playing.
They're as Nathan Bishop would say they're not even trying
to win. That they're not trying to win exactly. And
I think they're gonna win that series and then go
into the Houston series within three games.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
Uh, And do you think they're gonna take They're going
to gain two games over the weekend. I do.
Speaker 4 (59:01):
I think either the Mariners sweep the Rangers or they
win two of three and the Astros get swept, and
then they go into Houston and I think there's a
chance they could sweep the Astros, but then they're gonna
lose the series to Oakland to not go to the playoffs.
So wow, Mariner's thing of all time is you battle
(59:21):
back from where you've been these last couple of weeks
and then you choke it away in the final series
of the season.
Speaker 2 (59:28):
Should I check in with the guy next to me? Yeah,
you think.
Speaker 3 (59:30):
I'm very interested to hear what he thinks.
Speaker 2 (59:32):
Key for Furness left tackle for Whitworth University. Mariner fan,
Are they still in it one week from today when
they're just paying that picture? They still in it? Fella?
Speaker 7 (59:41):
You know, I'm a hopeful Mariner fan. I think that
they are. I would say that as a young kid,
I want to see the mayor succeeds, so I can't
prey on their downfall right now, and I hope they win.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
Wow, optimistic.
Speaker 3 (59:51):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (59:52):
Hot talks from heaven. Hydroplane race, guy, go into games
this summer right.
Speaker 7 (59:57):
Always been on green in the hydroplane race, you know,
always wins.
Speaker 6 (01:00:02):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:03):
I love that. I love that. Have you ever done
sports radio before? Fella?
Speaker 6 (01:00:07):
I have?
Speaker 2 (01:00:07):
Actually, when was that?
Speaker 7 (01:00:09):
What?
Speaker 6 (01:00:09):
Puking?
Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
Long time ago?
Speaker 7 (01:00:10):
Right, a long time ago?
Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
And then at OTAs, Oh that's right, yep, Yeah we
did do somemo TI radio. Didn't we forgot about that?
Are you the best talker in the family?
Speaker 7 (01:00:19):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
No, am I the best talker in the family?
Speaker 7 (01:00:21):
I would say yes. I take's a close second. My
sister is quite the talker. But it's more of her
being bossy, not just tengue you.
Speaker 3 (01:00:30):
Younger brother would know that. Younger brother would know that.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
Does she boss you around? Still?
Speaker 6 (01:00:34):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:00:34):
She tries you're twenty two, buddy, Like she can't be
bossing you around.
Speaker 7 (01:00:40):
Yeah, she can't tell me to put the dishes away
before you guys get home anymore. No, it's not really
a thing anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
Because she's not here. She's living in sin with her
boyfriend right now, is what's happening. So, although this guy
called out her boyfriend last week, so he did a
senior speech and called him out right there.
Speaker 3 (01:00:54):
What happened? What do you do?
Speaker 6 (01:00:55):
Well?
Speaker 7 (01:00:56):
I said that he should propose soon, and during my
senior shit yes, yeah, a lot of parents. I thought
that was a great idea and pressed him at the
tailgate the next day.
Speaker 2 (01:01:05):
Yeah, how'd he handle that?
Speaker 7 (01:01:07):
I think he handled it well. He texted me something
nice and said, uh, he'd love to call me his
brother soon. So hopefully that gets the ball rolling.
Speaker 4 (01:01:14):
There you go, Wow, the steps being made. That's actually
fun because I did the same thing with my sister's boyfriend.
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
Who did you really? I did?
Speaker 4 (01:01:20):
Yeah, and my whole family is behind it too. They've
been datd for like seven years. And you know she's
a professional athlete, like come on, man, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
His sister plays soccer for the Portland Thorns. Yeah, athlete athletes.
Speaker 3 (01:01:32):
It does as well as in the nest family too.
Speaker 2 (01:01:34):
It looks like, well, only one, there's only one. There's
only one athlete in this family.
Speaker 6 (01:01:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
He he just wants his sister to get engaged because
he doesn't want to be the first one to buy
a ring in the fild.
Speaker 3 (01:01:47):
There you go, there you go. I think that's incentive
has been unlocked.
Speaker 7 (01:01:51):
Yeah, I want to be an uncle. You got to
toughen some kids up. And hopefully she pumps.
Speaker 3 (01:01:59):
I hope she's less. I really do.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
She's not. She's at a casino in Indiana of all places. Wow,
So for a wedding or something. So that does run
in the family. The gambling element that does run the family.
Say that that that part does that starts with the
mom and goes trickles down. No, it skipped her. She's
actually just watching her boyfriend play. It goes to fella
here next.
Speaker 3 (01:02:18):
To I was gonna say key for you a big.
Speaker 7 (01:02:20):
You know, yeah, as much as I can, you know.
N C DOUBLEA says I can't. But yeah, I don't gamble,
but it is fun.
Speaker 3 (01:02:29):
You like it? But you do.
Speaker 7 (01:02:31):
I think in the future I'd love to particular There
you go.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
I have to get we do factor fiction coming up.
I should tease that coming up at two thirty five today,
factor fiction, your chance to win?
Speaker 3 (01:02:39):
Maybe pick today?
Speaker 2 (01:02:41):
Oh I could have. Well, here's the problem, Like we're
in an athletic complex here Atworth University. So I need
Andrews to give me some odds. Okay, yeah, I gotcha,
So maybe I'll do that. So I'll do that. Yeah,
they play fantasy football and stuff, so they kind of
know what's going on a little bit. But yeah, no,
gambling's not allowed at the n C double A. We're
not gambling.
Speaker 3 (01:02:59):
This is just making a pick.
Speaker 2 (01:03:01):
Yeah, you're not putting. There's no juice on this juice.
All right. You gotta get to class, don't you.
Speaker 7 (01:03:06):
I got time. I gotta leave a few minutes.
Speaker 2 (01:03:09):
So see this, that's what student athlete does. Andrews actually
go to class.
Speaker 7 (01:03:12):
Wow, really got to keep the grides up.
Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
Say that's the.
Speaker 3 (01:03:15):
First part of it is student athletes.
Speaker 2 (01:03:17):
Yep, that's three is what it is.
Speaker 3 (01:03:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:03:22):
Yeah, I don't have someone doing my homework for me.
You don't know, I wish Yeah, okay.
Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
All right, get on that.
Speaker 4 (01:03:27):
Yeah, I hear those kickers are pretty smart sometimes, are
your kickers smarter?
Speaker 6 (01:03:31):
Not?
Speaker 7 (01:03:31):
You'd be surprised. Really, I'm not the brightest.
Speaker 2 (01:03:35):
Who's what's the smartest position group on a football team?
Speaker 6 (01:03:38):
M hm.
Speaker 7 (01:03:40):
Honestly, some of the receivers are pretty smart because they
have a big drop off. It's either like they're at
the bottom or at at the very top.
Speaker 3 (01:03:47):
I was gonna say, oh line. I don't know if
you're just trying to be humble there.
Speaker 7 (01:03:49):
But yeah, there's some old line, but I also know
there's some battle lines. I think every position group has
a good variety guys. Yeah. Yeah, we had some freshmen
bring us down on a little bit on the day
last year, so I can't quite say, oh line. They
put up our GPA averages for the position groups at
the end of the year. Line wasn't at the top,
(01:04:10):
but you know, we're working.
Speaker 6 (01:04:11):
On it, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
At the bottom.
Speaker 3 (01:04:12):
That's where the senior leadership comes.
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
Listen, so long as you're at the bottom, right, that's
the D line.
Speaker 8 (01:04:16):
You know.
Speaker 7 (01:04:16):
The D line is where the dumb alignment go.
Speaker 2 (01:04:22):
Chapman, Tom, We good about that. Feel good about Chapman.
Speaker 7 (01:04:24):
Feeling great. It's hard to be a team three times,
but I think we got he.
Speaker 3 (01:04:27):
My brother goes to Chapman, does he really?
Speaker 10 (01:04:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:04:29):
Yeah, they're the chap What the what's the nickname.
Speaker 3 (01:04:31):
For no idea?
Speaker 2 (01:04:33):
All right, they're rolling in here tomorrow, So all right,
get to class. Fellow, Good to talk to you. Yep,
thanks so much.
Speaker 4 (01:04:40):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:04:40):
Good to hear you find postal Carolina game tonight soccer.
Speaker 7 (01:04:43):
Yeap watch as much as they can.
Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
Yeah, all right, see you buddy. That's the key for Fornast,
all right. Uh, way too much, way too much airtime
for this. We'll take a break. That's the question though,
four nine, four five one. A week from today, will
you will the Mariners be in it will be playing
relevant games those final three of the year. Old check
the text. Coming up at two thirty, Rob Rang at
two o'clock we'll do a daily power play coming up next.
Speaker 10 (01:05:10):
Walkin shoots one y on GOLDI plecks and I stop
It's Crosby could stop.
Speaker 3 (01:05:17):
This is the daily power Play Deep Slot one timer McKennon.
Speaker 1 (01:05:26):
Now Ian fernez Son Sports Radio ninety three point three.
Speaker 3 (01:05:32):
Wait kJ r FM.
Speaker 2 (01:05:35):
Daily power Player Home for the Crack at ninety three
point three kJ FM. Also on Sunday, it's nine point
fifty on the am OL for preseason game number one.
Mike Benton is the captain of the Crack and Audio Network.
He's with us right now from the Cracket Community ice
Plex Day two training camp wrapping up. Mikey, how you
doing buddy.
Speaker 3 (01:05:54):
Doing just fine.
Speaker 12 (01:05:55):
I think I had to just jump in my car
actually nearby the cracking community. I pugged because bone was
literally at two percent. That's how much this camp has
gone on a long for here for today.
Speaker 2 (01:06:07):
All right, give us you got some sound I think
from Jared McCann, Go ahead and set that up from today.
Speaker 12 (01:06:12):
Yeah. So we just got Jared McCann roughly about twenty
minutes ago, and he jumped right off the ice, didn't
even need to even change out of his gear. But
you could sense that there was a sense of thing
of physical relief that practice, that this intense was over.
So we asked him about the essence of the skating
and the Dan Viles of brand right here.
Speaker 13 (01:06:33):
A lot of energy but also just you know, have fun.
You know, he's a he's a very likely heared spirit,
but he also expects the guys to come out there,
and especially the older guys, to lead by example and
to show the older guys how it's done. So, you know,
he he brings a level of energy to our team.
I think we're kind of missing and you know it's good.
Speaker 7 (01:06:52):
Where have you seen I think so far the favas difference,
how the team's approaching itself for two days so far.
Speaker 2 (01:06:57):
That gives a little lot of encouragement.
Speaker 13 (01:07:00):
Is I mean you see our death to see her
confidence and practices. Guys are making plays, you know, especially
our younger guys are are slipping pucks through these legs
and wasn't like that when I when I started off.
And you know, it's good to see it's more of
a skill game now, and you know it's uh, it's
definitely we have a lot of skill.
Speaker 7 (01:07:17):
Take the best surprise seeing Dan laid down there.
Speaker 13 (01:07:19):
Yeah, com off guard the first time. Man com off
guard the first time, but almost sent the other buck
like I knew his shouldn't put the shins there, So yeah,
it's good.
Speaker 2 (01:07:29):
Mike w what is he talking about Dan lying down?
Speaker 14 (01:07:33):
I've never seen that before as far as a coach
at the NHL level to get in the middle of
thrills like that and literally sacrifice his faith.
Speaker 11 (01:07:44):
Like he almost.
Speaker 12 (01:07:45):
I mean, he was this bot to take in a
couple of nicks off the dome from players skating right
past him. A couple of pucks almost hit him. But
I mean, this is the Dan Biles of Brandy and
that we're getting exposed here it is active, it is energetic.
Can you can sense I think a different buy that
is surrounding this team right now than say, versus the
(01:08:06):
two seasons.
Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
Uh, Mikey game on Sunday on nine fifty, we got
sitting in at football, so we'll put the first preseason
game over run nine to fifty on the AM dial.
What would you We talked to Dan, we had him
on the show the other day. He kind of gave
us a little bit of a tease. He just said, Hey,
you know, first couple of preseason games, you're going to
see some young guys and kind of a split roster,
young guys, old guys, that type of thing. What are
(01:08:29):
you most excited just to watch or who are you
most excited to watch on Sunday if they're in the lineup?
Speaker 12 (01:08:39):
Great question, and I think it comes from the sense
that we don't know exactly who is going to be
suiting up yet on Sunday, But I think the pretty
good idea. And he and alluded to this, you know
on your show about a couple of days ago.
Speaker 8 (01:08:55):
You know it's gonna be.
Speaker 12 (01:08:56):
More here for a lot of young players to show
what they can do, and then we're gonna get down
to I think the narrowing of the numbers and seeing
who's really fit for this and making a serious push,
say by game five, in game six, but assuming he
suits up, and I would certainly expect within the first
two games here, I can't wait to see what Berkeley
(01:09:18):
Cat does for this group at his age. And I
think for what he's already putting together with his skill
set and the numbers that he had last year.
Speaker 8 (01:09:28):
A spoken and there's.
Speaker 12 (01:09:29):
Already I think, you know a few whiskers that if
there's one player who could make a serious push way
ahead of his curve or his projected curve, just based
on how he plays, it could be this guy right here.
I don't want to jump the gun maybe to say
he's gonna make the NHL roster at age eighteen, but
(01:09:50):
you know we've seen before. I think with his ability
to handle the puck, and he does it with poise.
There's not much panic in his game. If there's one
way to play in this D and H in the NHL,
to make plays, the more poise you have, the better
rocks you're going to be. And so far he's got it.
So that's one guy I'm looking forward to should he
suit up on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:10:12):
Goaltending depth is interesting final thing for you, Mike, what
about goltending? And we know what the Cord and Grubauer about.
Which which are the young goalies you want to see.
Speaker 12 (01:10:21):
I'm looking forward to seeing Nicholas Coco and it'll be
his first test here in North America after playing overseas
from this last season. But there's a reason why that
the Kraken took him as high ends they did, and
it's because he's athletic and he's got sided. I was
watching a drill this morning that he was running with
(01:10:41):
goaltending coach Steve Briere and also Joey to coord before
the first group got out there at about roughly eight
forty five in the morning, and they were going through
using mannequins as screens, and even one where Steve brier
was actually attaching like a rope or like a skate
lace to a mannequin and deliberately moving it across the
(01:11:03):
ice right in front of the goaltender's eyes while a
pug was being shot at him from skills coach Matt Lark,
And that was designed to see how athletic he can
move under duress from screens and track pugs that are,
you know, going right through playing at traffic. And from
what we saw out on Nicholas Coco, you know he
had a little bit more of like an elongate of movement,
(01:11:26):
you know, if I can use that phrase, as compared
to the court. But he was handling shots nearly flawlessly.
So you know you can sense from a guy who's
about six foot three, six foot four, he's only twenty
years of age. He's got a long, long road ahead here.
I think, of course he's paper Coachello Valley the way
that this depth is set up here. But he's got
(01:11:46):
a bright future for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:11:48):
Seven o'clock broadcast nine fifty am on Sunday. We'll see
you and listen to you then, man, thank you so much.
Speaker 8 (01:11:54):
Mike, Hey time, buddy, Thank you Mike.
Speaker 2 (01:11:57):
Benton the Captain. Seven o'clock again. O'll run nine fifty
in your home for the crack and his KJR AMFM,
depending on the day and time, will take a break
come back. Rob rang on a football Friday previous a
college football weekend for us coming up.
Speaker 1 (01:12:12):
Now from the star Renolds Sports Tests Jordan ninety three
point three KJR FM sports headlines.
Speaker 2 (01:12:18):
Headlines are brought to you by frost roodcres like choo.
Speaker 3 (01:12:24):
Chow with me right now.
Speaker 2 (01:12:27):
Oh indeed indeed a couple notes. Seahawks head coach Mike
mcdonalaspoke a little while ago. Updated injury report, the final
one coming out for the weekend. As as follows, George
Fant downgraded to out. Derek Hall has been added the
game status report and is now listed as questionable. Ken
Walker is doubtful, as is Jerome Baker, and the doubtful
(01:12:48):
for Walker, by the way, is indeed very doubtful. Mike
McDonald's saying he expects him to be back for the
Detroit game a week from Monday on Monday Night Football.
Kavon Wallace, Ferrell, brown boyme Off, Lemiscus and all junior
Derek Hall again, Hall just added all this is questionable
for Sunday's game against the Dolphins. Seex beat up a
little bit.
Speaker 6 (01:13:09):
Right now.
Speaker 2 (01:13:09):
Kaels like it's a little beat up along the way. Yeah,
we've got baseball tonight, Ladies and gentlemen. The Mariners are
going to try to stay alive in the American League
playoff race are taken on the Texas Rangers later on
this afternoon. Right now, they're two games behind Minnesota and Detroit.
Those two teams are tied for the final wildcard spot
in the American League. Now, when I say the Managers
are two games out, they're actually three because they don't
hold a tie breaker over either of the Tigers or
(01:13:30):
the Twins. They are four behind the Kansas City Royals,
which actually is five because again sat five breaker situation.
They're also five behind the Astros, So they got some
work to do here. In the next couple of ways,
Let's see what else we got. Husky football somewhere af
four o'clock their first ever game in the Big Ten
Conference conference, the conference that can't County will. They'll kick
(01:13:55):
off against Northwestern four o'clock Husky Stadium, twelve noon high
noon pregame show with Softy and the Hanks. Cougar is
in action. Tonight they're taking on San Jose State. That's
a seven o'clock start, National TV over on the CW.
Koch's trying to improve to four and zero on the season.
San Jose State is what you call the typical epitome
(01:14:16):
of a.
Speaker 3 (01:14:17):
Trap, especially of Friday night, especially on Friday.
Speaker 2 (01:14:19):
Night, especially on a Friday night. We've got Factor fiction
in thirty minutes. We've got texts we're gonna check at
two thirty. But right now we're gonna get you ready
for the college football weekend. Guys will watch for as
far as the Draft is concerned, and a big time
preview from our man courtesy at Farelli's Pizza, Rob Rang.
Speaker 1 (01:14:36):
Standing by as part of our never ending coverage of
the NFL. It's time for Ian's weekly visit with Rob
Rang from Foxsports dot com, brought to you by Ferrelli's
Pizza on your Home for the twelfth Man and the
NFL Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (01:14:53):
All right, here we go. Rober Rang joins us his
weekly visits here on a Football Friday, Washington State Beef
Commission Pulse Friday Beef, What's for dinner? Love beef? All right,
here we go, Rob Rang thanks to Farelli's Forarelli's Pizza.
It's National Pepperoni Day as well. We told you about
that a second ago. Let's start first. We did this
a couple of times. I like doing this with when
(01:15:13):
we talked about young guys that we talked about all
last spring. Where Rob going into the draft, and you
know guys that maybe we're gonna see in the NFL now,
And that's the case this weekend Seahawks Dolphins on Sunday,
and yeah, the whole you know, Skylar Thompson in for
two and all that stuff going on. The most are
probably out not gonna play. But there's a couple of
young guys, rookie edge rushers that we talked about quite
a bit last spring that we're gonna see for the
(01:15:34):
Dolphins on Sunday, right.
Speaker 10 (01:15:37):
Yeah, that's the concern. Of course, the Seahawks have had
the questions at the right tackle position, so any speed
rushers you have to be taking a you know, you know,
kind of a cautious glance that. So Chop Robinson of
course is the Miami Dolphins first round selection, and his
speed up field is it probably is good of any
pass rusher that I've seen him come down the piking
(01:15:57):
in the last several years. He's not the biggest of guys,
but in terms of his initial burst and his ability
to kind of greased the corner, that is maybe something
that Gino Smith is therey much going to be having
to deal with in this game. And then behind him,
Mohammed Kamara from Colorado State is another player that he
wouldn't wind up getting drafted until I believe it's the
(01:16:19):
fourth maybe the fifth round. But he also has some
burst up feeling. He is much more of a powerful
guy as well, and that is where stone Foresythe in
particular has struggled. If it's George Fans, I'm a little
bit more concerned about the speed of Chop Robinson. If
it's the much taller stone Foresythe, he struggled with bull
rushers who can push him deep into the pocket. And
(01:16:41):
that's where Kamara could be an issue.
Speaker 2 (01:16:44):
And they may have a backup in Patrick Paul at
right tackle. Is that right?
Speaker 10 (01:16:49):
Yeah? And that's one of the things is that you
know that there's been the Miami Dolphins have had some
issues with offensive tackles and their health as well. There's
not necessarily much of a drop offs, however, at the
office tackle position because of Patrick Paul. This is the
guy who was a five year starter at Houston, wound
up going to the Senior Bowl as well. I mean
he wound up leaving basically starting fifty five games over
(01:17:12):
his college career. Now it wasn't an offense at Houston
that threw the ball off a lot. Now was one
of the reasons why he fell into the second round.
I personally gave him a late first round grade, but
of course.
Speaker 7 (01:17:22):
I had me.
Speaker 10 (01:17:23):
Dolphins throw the football a lot. So he's actually a
very nice fit in their offense. So if their rookie
offensive tackle gets pushed onto the field, then the Dolphins
might actually be better prepared than you would think.
Speaker 2 (01:17:35):
Rob Rang joining us as weekly visit brought to you
by Ferrelli's Pizza Look for locations in the South Sound
and Forrelli's Pizza dot Com. All right, couple of games
in college football to keep an eye on some dudes tonight. Really,
you know one really good game, twenty four Illinois against
number twenty two Nebraska. Let's start there. Who you watching for?
The Ali Ni.
Speaker 10 (01:17:53):
Well, I think that it's easy to focus in on
the Nebraska skill position players. That's every bays talking about
is the court in the freshman quarterback Dylan Royola, and
then the running back is a sophomore Dante Dabbele six
to two hundred twenty five pounds, just brute. But I
love that you mention that line. I mean, we've talked
about them so much in the last couple of years,
(01:18:14):
of course, Devil Witherspoon being a huge part of that.
For me this year, the offensive lineman for Illinois is
where I be focusing my attention on. They got a
big tackle six foot four, three hundred and twenty one
pounds senior J. C. Davis, and then another senior, the guard,
Ziland Chrysler, six foot five, three hundred and thirty two pounds. Now,
(01:18:37):
offensive tackle, of course, is the bigger area of concern
right now for the Seahawks with everybody wondering what's going
on with Abe Lucas. But you know, considering the fact
that Seattle has struggled to protect and get some push
in the interior of the offensive line, then Chrysler maybe
somebody else to keep in mind. And I love this
matchup because Nebraska's got a defensive tackle that is flying
(01:18:59):
up draft forwards right now, and there's a lot of
guys that never after fly up draft boards right now.
With the way that that Matt Ruhle has, the Cornhuskers
kind of back to the you know, the eighties and
nineties kind of generation. The way they dominates the line
of scrimmage and that is Ty Robinson six foot five,
he's three hundred and eleven pounds. He wears number nine,
(01:19:21):
and he just is a very powerful, kind of an
in tier defensive lineman, and just knowing the way that
the Seahawks are built and the fact that they have
a big nose guard already in Jonathan Hankins. But he's
only on a one year deal. I would be surprised
if Seattle does not make the in tier the defensive
line of priorities. So if you like Ty Robinson, this
is a real good game tonight on five pm on
(01:19:44):
Fox that you can evaluate him against legitimate competition.
Speaker 2 (01:19:47):
Of course. Rob Erning from Fox sports dot Com Ty
Robinson sixty five, three eleven. That's kind of sounds like
Leonard Williams type of a body.
Speaker 10 (01:19:53):
Or build, And well, he's got that kind of height,
that kind of power. He's got much shorter arms than
Leonard Willing. I mean, wonder Williams is a bit of
a unicorn. I mean he's got the length, he's got burst,
he's got you know, he's a rare guy. Ty Robinson,
I think, you know, he measures up in some ways similarly,
but he is more of a bull rusher who kind
(01:20:14):
of chops his hands well but doesn't have the length
that overwhelms offensive lineman the way that Larry Williams.
Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
Says at seven o'clock tonight on the CW, the Koogs
and San Jose State Wazoo trying not to let have
a letdown game as well. I don't know if either
one of these guys. I don't think EMITTT. Brown's even
close to being an NFL guy who's will walk on
at Wazoo. Now he's at San Jose State John the
Tiers still really young, but kind of a fun matchup
between dual threat quarterbacks tonight.
Speaker 10 (01:20:40):
Yeah, exactly, That's what I liked about it. I mean,
you mentioned the fact that Emitt Brown is formed of
Wazoo guys, so there's gonna be some revenge factor that
he's going to be wanting to play in this game.
And you know, may not be guys for the NFL necessarily,
but for CFL or for the XFL or those leagues.
They might be interesting because they both are dynamic, I
mean just in terms of their running ability and the
(01:21:02):
way that they use their running ability to set themselves
up in the passing game. You know, Materia of course,
has a seven to two touchdown to interception ratio, so
he certainly is being very effective in that. M mc
brown's got a nine touchdown to two interception ratio. But
with Materia in particular. You know, everybody who watched from
you know that watched the Apple Cup, of course they
(01:21:22):
saw what a runner that Matier is. I mean three
one hundred and twelve ecue me, three hundred and fourteen
rushing yards and four touchdowns already so far this season. Again,
as the NFL in particular gradually is looking for more
dual threat quarterbacks, these are the types of players that
scouts are and be focusing in at the quarterback position.
Speaker 2 (01:21:44):
Rob Brian joining us. Watch by Ferrelli's Furliespizza dot Com.
Final location the South Sound, early and late happy hours,
fantastic pizza, wood fart awesome menu as well at ferrellis
Pizza dot Com. Great selection of local craft beers too.
All right, lets getting the meat of the schedule. Rob
number eleven, number eight team it's USC and Michigan. Wait
they're playing in September, not in Pasadena on January first? Well, world,
(01:22:05):
are we living in it? With a stupid big ten thing. Anyway,
let's let's talk about the guys you're watching, because there's
a whole bunch of dudes on the field for USC
and Michigan. That's a twelve thirty game on CBS on Saturday.
Speaker 10 (01:22:16):
Well, it's funny because we use that term dudes, you know,
like like to basically highlight players that you know, we
think are like the first round picks and stuff like that.
And so if we're talking about dudes and they're all
on Michigan side, you know, Michigan's got four players in
my mock draft that I already have a Fox Sports,
but four guys in particularly on just on the defensive
(01:22:39):
side of the ball, that that you want to make
sure that you're keeping an eye on the cornerback Will Johnson.
And number two he might just be the number one
overall pick. When it sol said that I actually have
number two at number two in that mock draft. He
just reminds me so much of Patrick Sartann and the
Denver Broncos. I means six foot one, he's two hundred pounds.
(01:23:00):
He is great in coverage, he's even better in run support.
He's just a terrific football player. And considering that you know,
everybody kind of associates USC and Lincoln Riley is being
able to throw the football. The reality is their starting quarterback,
Miller Moss, only has two touchdown passes in two games.
I don't necessarily believe that he is going to be
able to boost those numbers against this type of a
(01:23:22):
Michigan defense, which again has the corner, has two defensive
tackles that I think are going to be worthy of
first round picks. Number fifty five Mason Graham, Number seventy
eight Kenneth Grant. Both are three hundred and twenty pounders
that again the Seahawks might be very interested in them
because of their run stuffing abilities, and obviously Mike mcgonald's
(01:23:42):
passed the familiarity with these two players. If you want
to switch to the offensive side of the ball for Michigan,
the tight end Colston Loveland, to me, is easily the
top tight end in this year's upcoming draft. Back not
quite to the point of a Brock Dowers a year ago,
but I do believe that he is easily going to
be a first round selection. And of course, University of
(01:24:04):
Washington fans remember the running back Donald and Edwards far
too well for their own liking. On the USC side,
the one guy really is intriguing to me is on
the defensive side of the ball. He's actually playing inside linebacker.
And you will not see many inside linebackers who are
listed at least at six foot seven. But this guy
(01:24:25):
is just a really rangy player. Eric Gentry, he definitely
has one to watch, especially again when you have Mike
mcdoon's defense and the way he moves people around. Eric
Gentry is a guy that did should be paying attention
to it.
Speaker 2 (01:24:38):
Yeah, I was just thinking that it's like one of
those unicorn toos. Well, we just talked about that with
Leonard Williams. Right, kind of a unicorn and Leonard Williams
a sixty seven, two hundred and six pound right now
inside linebacker. And you know what would a guy like
Mike McDonald do with a dude like that, right kind
of move him around a little bit and see what happens,
real fast, just a real quick fight. Trojan's Michigan. I
first of all, I'm not liking my Factor of fiction
pick yesterday all of a sudden with all these guys
(01:24:59):
in Michigan. But but the Trojans, I feel like they
should go in and win this game. This is going
to be a close one, though, isn't it.
Speaker 7 (01:25:06):
Rob.
Speaker 11 (01:25:08):
I think it will, just because I don't think either
offense if you'll score.
Speaker 10 (01:25:13):
So I didn't hear your factor fitchmen fit buddy, But
I'm hoping to fit the under.
Speaker 11 (01:25:18):
Because that might actually be what works out.
Speaker 10 (01:25:20):
I know that USC is favored, which again is surprising
to me considering this is the game at the Big House.
At the same time, there's no question about it that
Lincoln Riley's the heck of a coach. He's got obviously
a lot more experience than they have on the ann
Arbor side, and so I think that there's something to
be said for that, and I wouldn't be surprised if
have been kind of keeping a lot of the playbook
in Lincoln Riley's back pocket preparing for this game. But
(01:25:43):
at the same time, I kind of go back to
the fact that this is a Michigan defense that obviously
was dominated a year ago, and while they lost a
lot of players in the NFL, I mean, the Jim
Harbrock' three a heck of a pipeline there, and so
they have an awful lot of account especially along the
line of scrimmage and that something that USC has struggled
with for a long time.
Speaker 2 (01:26:01):
Now, great game, Oklahoma State, number fourteen in the country
playing host to number twelve Utah, and I mean this
is going to be a good one, right, Olie Gordon
the running back from Oklahoma State against Kyle Whittingham's defense.
Who are you looking at in this one?
Speaker 10 (01:26:17):
Well, you just mentioned Ali Gordon. Mean to me, that's
the that's you know, the very low hanging fruit there.
This is the dok Walk Award winner as the nation's
best running back a year ago as a sophomore, led
the country in rushing yards again six to two hundred
and twenty five pounds. You think about Oklahoma State and
of course they've had some unbelievable running backs there. You know,
(01:26:39):
obviously one of the greatest of all time in Barry Sanders,
and even Seattle with Chris Carson Truba. Hubbard was drafted
a few years ago now as the starter of the
Carolina Panthers. All the Gordon is no Barry Standers, but
he is right there with the other backs that I
just mentioned, the slasher who has side in physicality, and
then as you mentioned, I mean Utah is just loaded
(01:27:00):
on defense and love the linebackers. We talked about that
yellow jacket and Kareeine Reid as being kind of a
rover outside linebacker type. But what about Lander Barton, who
of course is the younger brother of Cody Barton former seat. Now,
I believe with Washington Commanders six two hundred and thirty
six pounds, he had really high grades from scouts entering
(01:27:20):
this year, and he's the player that I think is
going to create the most tackles, possibly against Aldi Gordon.
And there's two edge rushers that are kind of moving
up here that I want to mention, Van Fillinger number seven,
six four two and sixty five pounds, and then the
guy that keeps jumping off the tape kind of like
the quarterback position.
Speaker 7 (01:27:39):
You know.
Speaker 10 (01:27:39):
Of course, they've had so many injury issues there. But
Conor O'Toole also has struggled with durability a little bit.
But a six foot four two and forty four pounds,
he has some bursts and some bend to him as well.
I think it's gonna get him drafted if you can,
and if you can finish up the season without having
any more injury.
Speaker 2 (01:27:58):
All right, just a couple of minutes left with Rob.
So let's you. I'll just give put it on the
t for you at number six tennessee number fifteen Oklahoma. Yes,
that is not a big twelve sec matchup. That is
now a new age SEC matchup with Oklahoma. Moving over there.
Who are you watching in that four to thirty game
on ABC?
Speaker 10 (01:28:15):
Well, the biggest one it is going to be the
Bowls pass rusher James Curse Junior. I mentioned the mock
draft I have written up and I actually have Peers
as the number three overall selection in that mock draft.
I mean, it's easy to see why. He's six foot five,
he's two hundred and fifty pounds. He is lightning off
of the edge. He led the SEC in sacks a
(01:28:37):
year ago at ten he had fifteen tackles for loss
as well. All that said, he's been absolutely invisible so
far this seed. We've got one tackle in three games.
I mentioned before about Lincoln Riley kind of having some
plays in his back pocket. I think that James Pierce Jr.
Had there waiting for this national. You know, some people
(01:28:58):
believe this is a possible national champion and shipper or
playoff kind of contender kind of a game. I think
he's been waiting for this opportunity. So to me, all
the prospects playing big time games this weekend, that's the
player and that's the game I'm watching most because if
he isn't put up, then he's certainly not going to
be in the top ten of my mock draft moving forward.
Speaker 2 (01:29:18):
Wow, that's weird to volunteer edge rusher that's six five
and two forty and sometimes he's there and sometimes he disappears. Hello,
Daryl Taylor, Okay, we're good to go. You gut stuff
up on Fox sports dot com right now.
Speaker 4 (01:29:32):
I do.
Speaker 10 (01:29:33):
I had the mock draft I mentioned before.
Speaker 11 (01:29:35):
I also did it kind of a little bit more
of a goop dive, you know.
Speaker 10 (01:29:38):
Arch Manning, of course at Texas got he's gonna get
his very first career start this weekend, and last week
he with the injury to Quinn. Viewers, arch Manning got
kind of pushed onto the field and then just threw
five touchdown or excuse me, through for four touchdowns, ran
for a fifth of sixty plus yards, So showing off
a little bit more athleticism than you might expecting from anybody.
Speaker 11 (01:30:02):
Who is related to either Eli.
Speaker 10 (01:30:04):
Or Peyton Manning. And so it is kind of a
deep dive on arch Manning and why I believe that
arch Manning is going to be a future top five selection.
In comparison I already am coming to is Trevor Lawrence,
who of course was the number one overall selection a
few years back and also came into the league with
almost as much fanfare as arch Manning ned when he
(01:30:26):
entered or resigned with Texas Long Place.
Speaker 2 (01:30:28):
All right, there you go. That's Rob Brain, brought to
you by our good friends at Fairliessizzafaliespizza dot Com. Factor
Fiction coming up next on ninety three point three KJFM
