(01:52):
stimy the bit of its turbos upthe inside Company Stream. It's turbo surging.
Late here comes the winning line Company'sdream and it's turbal. It got
really close there at the end.Horse Racing Northwest from Emerald downs Joe with
the Vince Brune and track announcer builddowns. The silent buildowns over there right
(02:13):
now, Vince. But where itis Bill can emit herbal enunciation audible.
Yeah, let's I think you'll noticehe's back up to well, let's say
strength. Yes, very good,Bill, all ready to go. We
gave Bill a few words off.He called all the races last weekend.
(02:35):
No problem there, but I thinkif you're a it was a problem.
It was a problem. It wasa problem. But sometimes you got to
play, you know, not hurt, but you know, not it's sounding
my best. If I wasn't feelingmy best and not sounding my best,
I might have might have let Deancall the races. But I was feeling
(02:55):
fine, but the voice wasn't upto snuff. But I just tried to
do the best I can. Andbut I wouldn't want to do that every
weekend. Yeah, yeah, wegave you a few words off on other
announcements. But Bill made it throughand he's doing a lot better for this
upcoming two day weekend at Emerald Downs. You heard the audio of Company's Dream
(03:16):
winning the feature race on Sunday,Kevin Radkey aboard for trainer Vince Gibson.
Company's Dream, owned by the Luskfamily, now two for two. And
you know, guys, Kevin wonthat nose victory Sunday and on our opening
day, he had that nose victoryaboard Palaco. Both those horses desperate knows
(03:40):
at the end, but First ofthe Wire won the race, and that's
made a little difference in the paycheckof Kevin Radkey for the first three days.
Yeah, and then make mention ofit's Turbo who ran great in defeats.
You know, Company's Dream kind ofgot loose in the lead. Ice
Tower didn't have a good starter Ithought would show some speed. Gold Rush
Junior ended up doing the dirty work. But Company's dreamt that got a clear
(04:01):
lead. And it's Turbo though Ithought, ran that great in defeat in
that an allowance optional claiming race.Yeah, he was a good two year
old last year and looking to bea good three year old this year.
We'll get some facts and figures fromVince in just a moment, but let's
just go over this weekend some particulars. It's Preakness weekend in the world of
(04:24):
thoroughbred racing. Emeraldowns jumping right inthere. Preakness Friday gates open at eight
am for simulcasters and Saturday Preakness Daygates open at seven am. Here at
Emerald Downs. The Preakness scheduled forfour o'clock in the afternoon. It's Teacher
Appreciation Weekend at Emerald Downs and thatmeans if you have a teacher, a
(04:48):
school district ID, you're going toget in for free and a guest yourself
and a guest if you're a schooldistrict employee. And that's both Saturday and
Sunday. And there's another little perkteachers in there as well. If you
attend the races here at Emeraldowns thisweekend, whether it's going to be good
Dancing at the Downs on Saturday night, it's the name of the live band
(05:11):
is prom Date Mixtape. Prom DateMixtape. From eight to eleven pm on
the fifth floor. You can getyour tickets at Emeraldowns dot com. I'll
be there, okay, Yeah, you've kind of holding court there right at
the door, meeting people and gettingthe tickets scanned at everything that is correct.
Yeah, yeah, So that's sevenpm. The gates open up there
(05:34):
on the fifth floor or the flooropens and then music from eight to eleven
pm for our Dancing at the Downs. We'll have another Dancing at the Downs
on Belmont Stake Saturday. I believethat's June tenth, So the Great Outdoor
Giveaway is just weekend away and againwe're going to race on Monday Memorial Day
(05:55):
this year May twenty seven, twentyeighth, and twenty ninth, racing at
Emeraldowns Saturday, Sunday, Monday,Great Outdoor Giveaway. We're going to have
several prizes each day. I know. One of the prizes is a really
nice smoker, a pit boss pelletsmoker. One of those to be given
away all three days, you littlemeat cooker, bill Ah, Yes,
(06:16):
believe it or not. I dohave a barbecue back home in Pennsylvania,
though I don't get to use ittoo often. I did use it a
couple of times before shipping out thisyear. So I hear a smoker.
I know my girlfriend wants wants toget one, but I haven't done one
yet. I haven't bought one yet. But yeah, that's a great,
(06:38):
great little prize there. Wipe thesnow off back there in Pennsylvania. It
was, it was warm, itwas you know, it wasn't that bad.
It's just like here, I likehere, for goodness sake that I
don't know where you got these eightiesfrom and the ninety degree weather in May,
but it wasn't. It was avery mild winner in Pittsburgh this year,
okay, right, And we didhave a training day today. You
(07:01):
can catch that on YouTube Emeraldowns YouTubechannel training day from May eighteenth, and
one of the Racing Club horses wason the training day report, Vince Brune.
Yeah, it's got delicious three yearold Philly who we got down in
Phoenix. She ran I thought agood third against a pretty good Philly in
(07:23):
Miss Flashy Harbor, considering she hada couple issues. The writer lost the
crop into the stretch, she missedthe break and then she had a horse
stop in front of her right onthe turn. She might have gotten second.
No one's gonna is yeah, noone was gonna win, So no
one's gonna beat Miss Flashy Harbor. But I think she might be okay,
and she seems to have bounced outof the race pretty good. Yeah good,
Yeah, Jeff Mets trainee. It'sgot delicious. And news and notes
(07:47):
are up because it's the first oneof the year. They are up.
Yeah emeraldowns dot com under the newssection, and we'll do a new one
every Thursday throughout the racing season. And there's just a ton of great stuff
in there. Go over with someof that is that you do every week,
well, just the leaders in allthe different categories, you know,
jock, trainer, owner, everyhorse that's won a race, buyer speech.
(08:11):
Yes, a lot of people areinterested in those, and then winning
sires, and then where the horseswere, bread and our weekly honors,
which we'll talk about in a second, and then some of usually a few
couple notes down at the bottom.I noticed favorites one fourteen of the twenty
six races over the first three, that's right, and I think they were
(08:33):
ten for nineteen last week, Sofavorites are doing well. I opened a
lot early in the season, sure, and yeah something you know, we
had a few shorter fields on openingday, you know, doing the morning
line for Saturday, there's going tobe some tough races this weekend. I
haven't done Sunday yet, but Saturdayis real tough. There's a just an
(08:54):
outstanding race, B and Bill we'retalking about. I'm gonna try and pick
the winner that only five claimer andyou know, put it this way,
it was eleven horse field with athree to one morning line shot. You
know, if you can get missedthe boat at three to one around here.
That's usually a pretty good price fora horse that's so consistent. But
that's a tough spot. There's ahorse we talked about, Clayton Delaney coming
(09:18):
in from stakes races for Jeff Metzbarn. Looks pretty interesting and h just
a stack lineup, you know,Capitol expense, Cody's choice. They always
have a lot of speed around thistrack. And uh, I think Muns
he's in there. He's kind ofa venerable, uh, kind of good
claimer glass Candy's training well, yeah, different Phoenix, fantastic day, fantastic
(09:43):
day as a great record at thistrack. So yeah, it's it's a
very deep feel. Yeah, Okay, And Candy Kreiderman, trainer of Missed
the Boat's going to join us hereon Horse Racing Northwest in segment number two.
Matt Johnson's also going to join uson this show. Matt former sports
producer at KJR. Then he gota job with the Seahawks. First season
(10:03):
with the Seahawks, they went tothe Super Bowl back in oh five against
that Steeler team that won in Detroit, and Matt also has worked for the
Sounders. He attends the World Cupevery four years with his brother, I
know wherever it might be. Hell, we don't have to travel far for
the next one. That's right, the part of it will be right here.
(10:26):
I'm sure he's excited. Well,Seattland, Vancouver, Vancouver as well.
Yeah, okay, Matt good friendswith Dory Monson worked the Seahawk pregame
and postgame shows, and Dory wasa good friend of his. We're gonna
have a Dory Monson memorial purse onSaturday here at Emerald Downs, and friends
(10:48):
and family are going to be out. We're going to play a little couple
excerpts from his memorial which was basicallyheld for close friends and family, and
Dory was a big race fans.So we're gonna hear from Matt Johnson on
that. And yeah, a littlebit more back to stats early on Blaine
Wright. How about it five fornine to start the meat and four wins
(11:13):
on Sunday. Four wins on Sunday. Blaine had done that five years ago,
back in twenty eighteen. Yeah,it looked on paper like Blaine was
going to have a good day andhe did. H Yeah at five wins
for the for the week, sooutstanding, So he, you know,
do that that's pretty hard not toget. Trainer of the week right.
Our jockey of the week, thisis actually for the first three race days,
(11:37):
would be Kevin Radkey. Kevin offto another good start here with six
wins. Our owner of the week. How about this guy, Howard hammer
Rammer racing those black and red silkswe've seen here for so many years.
A couple of wins for Howard lastweek, still going strong Joe and one
hundred and three and one hundred andthree. And then our lab bread of
(11:58):
the week is feather in the win. We could have made it two of
them. How about this for SteveMeredith he bread back to back full siblings
to Victory's last Sunday with Feather inthe Wind and Frank's fix It. I
did not notice that. Yeah Ididn't either until going over the charts,
and that's a real oddity. Sothat's quite an accomplishment for Steve. And
(12:18):
a Feather in the wind's a real, a real fast Philly, right you
bet? And uh yeah she's Ithink that's her third win. And Frank's
fix It's been a pretty hard knockeraround here. And I struggled with that
morning line on that one. Ithink I made him ten and he went
off at five to two and onelike eight to five. You know,
(12:39):
I thought I had done my workon that race too that I did not
think the race he was coming outof was that powerful Franks fix it.
He was coming off a win.But I apparently was wrong there. I
just remember him last year winning hisfirst race. He did seasons. Yeah,
that's a big factor around here. That's a good point. Yeah.
Yeah, So but after that hewasn't didn't well it went after that,
(13:00):
I don't believe last year or so, at least at Emeralds. Yeah,
and that was a real and againthat was Candy who will have on and
uh but anyway, great job bySteve Meredith. Yeah, you've mentioned that
Joe also overlooked it and that's hardto do. And raised a secret.
The sire had a couple of winslast week as well, and I believe
(13:20):
a second is also, so hereally did well. And you know,
we just do not have that manysires in western Washington right now with the
passing of conveyance. Especially there's CoastGuard Barkley and raised a secret at El
Dorado. There's gold rushed answer atthe Papst Farm and other than that,
that's pretty obscure, Debbie Papst ofcourse, and Rick they lost conveyance a
(13:45):
few weeks ago, but they doplan on getting another one in there,
so that's great. Blaine Wright,he's been our leading stakes trainer five of
the last six years. He tiedone year there with Kay Cooper. But
so her first steak is June eighteenth. I believe in sac that is correct.
We got I think the double headis at the Seattle in the Auburn,
(14:07):
so the three year old Phillies andthe three year old Coltson Geldings.
And speaking of that, I wouldsay, just off the top of my
head, a Loha Breeze looks likea pretty good candidate for the Seattle Stakes.
That was quite a display a speed. I mean she was three to
five. She was supposed to win, especially after a couple of scratches,
but boy, that second quarter sheran that kind of was one of those
eye openers where you know this worseis serious, has some serious speed.
(14:31):
Yeah, Bill, you were impressedby that, as everybody was. Yeah,
it was five and a half. You the first quarter twenty one and
four not that fast, but asVince mentioned that second quarter forty four point
five two, so it's almost likea twenty two and three second quarter there.
That's that's when you know you gotsome pretty good speed when you can
follow up a sub twenty two withthe twenty two and change. I after
(14:52):
that race and maybe a few hours, I'm thinking, you know, here's
a stakes winter at age two, really good two year old Philly who has
debuted better than that as a threeyear old after coming off a good year
like that. You know, sometimesyou see new compage, but stop shopping.
Debbie might have. Yeah, butyou know, you can't get much
(15:13):
more impressive than I'll know that was. That was. You know, I
think the buyer shopping Debbie never losta race here, right, And I
think the buyer came back seventy onefor low Low Breeze, which is right,
do you I thought I should haveprobably been a little bit higher,
you know, certainly it was acareer high, you know. And of
course last year she's you know, campaigning it too. That horse that beat
her down in Phoenix too, youknow, when she ran second in that
(15:35):
stake. That's a serious race horse. I think it's scept for six this
year. Is Yeah. I thinkit's seven for nine lifetime with over two
hundred thousand, so you know,uh, mister Wenzel and his man George
doctor George or Darrow and as managerBob Cappelletti, they're loaded. Yeah.
They've got a lot of two yearolds too, and some well bred ones.
(15:58):
So yeah, Wenzel's barn. Greatstart there with a lohab breeze.
Okay, and didn't mention our posttime two pm, which most of you
are aware two pm Saturday and Sundayeach day Teacher appreciation weekend at Emeraldowns.
We also have that great low takeouton pick threes and daily doubles ten percent
(16:21):
takeout on doubles and pick threes forthis year at Emeralddowns. Indian Relay Weekend
isn't all that far off. Junesixteenth through the eighteenth. The eighteenth will
be the Indian Relay Championships. It'llbe our first two stakes of the season
for the thoroughbreds, and it willalso be Father's Day, so that's going
to be a big day there.Okay. Check emeralddowns dot com News and
(16:45):
Notes for all that updated information andmore. So let us take a break

(17:52):
one years old in Serdans gets toopen an account with the first better reason
in state with such activities legal wideprohibit and National Gamming Support Line eight hundred
five to two forty seven hundred onefor longs ago. Franks fix it and
a stubborn does a lot. Thesetwo headed head through the stretch head Mama
called me poo on the grandstand sidewith you every morning. Franks fix it,
Mama call me pooh. Franks fixit victorious. That was Frank's fix
(18:15):
it winning off the bench on Sundayat emeralddowns good score from an outside post.
And Candy Kreiderman had a couple ofwins last weekend on Sunday. That
is Candy joining us on horse racingNorthwest. Candy, good afternoon, Hello
he good to have you on.You're coming off a really good season here
(18:40):
at Emerald Downs twenty seven wins lastyear you won at twenty two percent,
fourth in the standings. Congratulations onthat, first of all, thank you
so much, so definitely a teameffort, it was. We had a
good year. Yeah, you suredid. What about the makeup of your
stable this year similar to last year? Similar to last year? I have,
(19:07):
I think a few more youngsters thanI had last year. But I've
got some good claiming horses. Ithink it will be fine. We just
need you know, a few ofthem had time off and have just come
back in and I have a fewready to run right now that I'm looking
for racist for So I think Ithink it will be as good of a
year or better, I hope.Yeah. And with John Parker as your
(19:30):
owner, you have to be readyfor new horses in the bar, new
personalities, new sizes and shapes, don't you. Oh my yeah, I
mean that's one of the things Itelled us tell my grooms is you know,
don't get overly attached to them becausewe you know, we run to
win and then we'll get to anotherone when we lose that one. So
(19:52):
um, yeah, no doubt.Yeah. John has been our leading owner
five the last seven seasons. Youknow, that's pretty amazing, it is.
It has candy and advance here. When you guys won two on Sunday,
just looking at the media guy,you know John, that tied him
of moving up to a third placetie all time. Now when the Emeraldowns
(20:15):
owner's list with one hundred and seventyseven, I know, a whole bunch
of them have been for you.Yeah, but that's what That's such an
accomplishment for him. I mean, all these years that he's put in,
all this time and money with thesehources, and and I'm really glad to
see it happening for him. Yeah, that's a heck of a figure.
(20:36):
Yeah, he has just jumped wayup the list and he continues to support
Emerald Downs. Just a very generousman in so many areas as well.
You know, we're rooting for youbecause we roote for John a lot,
Candy. I mean, I'm nottrying to put you in second place or
anything, but so many people rootfor John because of his generosity. And
(20:59):
you have to get those horses readyand place them in the right spots.
And yes, I do a tadtad bit of pressure. What about John's
John's input as a owner, Imean he claims him, he pays the
bills. What about his input ondifferent areas of racing and entering and so
forth. He's very Yeah, he'sextremely intelligent. Of course, he sees
(21:25):
it differently than I do. Sometimeswe you know, I'll explain my position
on where I want to run ahorse and y, and usually with me,
it's I want to run this horsehere for now, because I know
you can win a couple with himand then you know, we can drop
him, but let's win with himfirst. And sometimes he's about cash flow,
(21:48):
right and the business side of it, and he's like, well,
we need cash flow, and sohere's what we're gonna do. So I
think we work well together. Buthe's very intelligent, and he you know,
he can read a form like noone and and he's picked out some
really good horses in the past. We've picked out some bablins also, um,
but we've picked out good claiming horsesand and he's very good at that.
(22:12):
Kenny, you got a couple inon Saturday, Clo Diamante and Missed
the Boat. Missed the Boat wasgreat here at Emerald Downs last season.
I thought Clo Diamante was a prettynice Philly. She didn't win at Emerald
Downs last year, but she rana couple of bang runner up finishes.
Talk about both of them. Youknow, Missed the Boat obviously is the
(22:33):
one that Emerald downs. Handicappers knowa whole lot about considering that he won
plenty of races even though he's ina very tough spot with a big,
big field in Saturday's eighth race, but Clo Diamante and missed a boat or
your two in on Saturday, SoCloum we brought up last year from Golden
Gate. We claimed at Golden Gateand we ran I believe a couple races
(22:59):
with her, and then she hadan accident in the barn and was kind
of sidelined for a while. Wedid bring her back and she just wasn't
quite the same, so we gaveher some rest and sent her back down
to Linzini for the winter. Ibelieve she's in good form now. She's
training beautifully. She did she didvery well at Golden Gate. We weren't
(23:19):
willing to drop her there because Iwanted her for up here. She has
a Washington bread and she's just atough you know, she's bread by Griffin
Place, and she's a tough, tough little horse, not very big,
but she usually will give it everythingshe's got. So I'm looking forward to
running her here for sure, becauseI think that she'd liked this track.
(23:44):
When she ran healthy last year onthis track, she did very well.
So I feel like we're probably ina good spot tomorrow and missed the boat.
He's just a hard knock and truehorse. We gave him a lot
of time, well deserved time off, and I've had he's been ready since
opening day. I just haven't reallybeen able to find the right fit for
(24:08):
you know, he needs. It'snot a workhorse in the morning at all,
he doubt you know, he justkind of looks around and he'll put
whatever he has to put into itjust to get through the work. So
I feel like this horse probably willwork himself into shape. But we'll see,
I guess on Sunday, won't weYes. Yeah, you know,
he's just been an easy horse toroot for, and I'm sure other trainers
(24:32):
don't like to see him in thesame race because he just is a great
competitor at any distance. And youknow, Javier Matthias, I'm looking at
the stats. He's done really wellfor you the last year and a half
or so. Yeah, I useJavier a lot. He is a great
asset to our barn. And weyou know, I use a lot of
(24:53):
writers. Better use Javier a lot. Javier also works for me in the
morning, and I'm blessed too havehim. He he uh. He is
so great with the young horses. He builds great confidence and um, he
can work anything, and he's reallysmart out there and he can stay on
(25:15):
just about anything. So big bonusfor me to have him in the morning.
Okay, yeah, Javia Mattias. And you do use with the number
of horses you start, you knowyou're going to use a lot of different
jockeys. Uh um, what whatare com some of your go to is
then other than Javier? Oh definitely, Um, Kevin Radkey, Alex Cruz,
(25:37):
Um, I don't, I don't. Um, I'll use the Louis
Luis nick Ron. I'll probably usehim. I used him once already on
Mister Midas and really liked him.Um um, I'd like to use the
little bug girl if she sticks around. She she looks like she can ride
a little bit. I'm always looking. We didn't have a bug rider here
(26:00):
year, and I think it wouldbe great if she can hang in here
for a little bit. But yeah, so you know Kevin Racky, I
missed Muandudier. He was always avery very much a go to one for
me, and of course he didnot come back this year, so I
I sorry about that. I liketo get the best rider I can on
(26:21):
my horse, right, so um, you know, I had this little
fear thing in my mind and differentwriters fit different horses, so but I
as a writer, I want towin races. Yep, Candy, I
know. One of the exciting thingstoo last year for you and John was
the development of the gold Rush Dancers, which of course John won the mile
with and is now made a stallion, which is very difficult to do.
(26:45):
And how are the gold Rush dancerprogeny come along in your barn this year?
I think, really well, theythe one my two year olds from
last year I turned out and theycame back and they're you know, they're
kind of just now getting into shape, and I take my time with them,
you know, and I if they'renot ready on opening day, they're
(27:07):
not ready on opening day, willwe will definitely get there. Um.
I think I have some very nicebabies again by gold Rush answer, I'm
hoping. Um. I like thelooks of them. They're working well in
the morning, so I think itcould be another good baby year for gold
Rush also, so um, heproduces a beautiful looking athlete and hopefully they
(27:32):
continue to run like they did lastyear. Yeah, that was a great
first crop for him and you gothis first stakes winner. Annette Marie.
Yes, that made everybody happy atthe barn, including John absolutely. Absolutely.
Um, it's always nice to wina stake race sometimes during the year,
right yeah, yeah, Well, what about your help too? You
(27:55):
know, I know Lisa and Shelleyare over there a lot um and you
know it is it tough? Welltalk about them, and then also the
fact that you do have horses leavethat you guys put so much TLC in
two over there, right, M. I have great help Lisa Martinston with
me for I don't even I mustbe five or six years and she is.
(28:22):
She is very hard working, knowledgeableperson that I probably could not do
this without as many horse weeks. It's great when she's not here. Just
just doing our order of go inthe morning is extremely difficult, and I
(28:45):
had to do it one day hereand I think we had something to go
like you never get another day off. It's crazy. It's crazy how she
does it, but you know, she's so good at it. I guess
it's a lot easier than it isfor me. Um Selly Nicholas, who
is a really dear friend of mineand a client, also comes down.
(29:06):
We call her the assistant to theassistant and she comes down and is a
great help. Um. She keepsthe rooms you know, in saddle towels
and girth covers and kind of organizea tack for them and will help.
She'll just help do anything U thatwe need her to do, which we
(29:26):
have horses that have we have horsesthat have to be hand walked. When
we have really naughty horses on thewalker, they just on the walker.
It's just not worth the risk ofthem getting hurt. And so we actually
handwalk a lot of horses and UmSoul we keep her really busy too.
And then my grooms are great ofexcellent, excellent rooms this year and Mum
(29:47):
couldn't do it without them either,So you know, really it's a it's
a huge it's a huge team effortevery single day and every horse, even
if it's the twenty five hundred dollarone right gets the same care. So
we just worked really hard to dothe best that we can and they do
get attached to them And one ofthe guys I've had that's been with me
(30:11):
a long time. Hey, ZeusMartinez. He loves Frank fix It and
was so thrilled that we bought Frankfix It back right. I mean he
was just like over the moon.He didn't believe me at first, and
when he showed up he was like, oh this is you know, so
great, so happy. So wedo. We really do get attached to
(30:33):
them, but we always know.We always know when it's time to let
them go right for one reason oranother. And I always know that they're
going to get claimed. I knowwhen I dropped them usually that they'll be
gone. Yeah, that's a partof the game. You've got to live
with and you certainly probably get asmany claimed as anybody at the tracks,
(30:55):
including runs last week, Candy,I know you had a nice comeback.
Or Queen Breezy one pretty easy andwas claimed the way. But that was
a nice one too. Yeah,we were so excited. Queen Queen Breezy.
We call her Ellen in the Barn. She will always have a really
special place in all of our hearts. She is not the easiest elly to
(31:17):
be around, and um she's shehas a lot of personality. She holds
the grudge m seln like Lisa becauseLisa medicates, and so we'll show Lisa
coming and run to the back ofristall. We always have to help her
catch her. But yeah, sheWe were sorry to see her goal,
but it was time and she Iwanted to get to win with her for
sure, so I was, youknow, kind of strategically placing her and
(31:42):
she won and that was nice.Alex won on her. Um. I
remember the first time he worked herwhen he got up here this year.
I think he worked her five eights. I actually had work offs the last
I had already done that, butI worked her five eighths and he comes
around the corner and he says, she's back. I'm like, well,
that's good because she's going to runnext week. So um yeah, it
(32:02):
was it was you know, Ithink I've had her three years and it
was that's a hard one to seego. But we were well prepared.
Matter of act. Lisa and Ihad sat in the office and I said,
here's where I'm going to run her. She will be gone and yeah,
it's probably time, and I'm like, yeah, it probably is.
She is six for fifteen at EmeraldDown. So yeah, you guys have
had a whole lot of success withQueen Breezy. Right. We have a
(32:24):
lot of pictures on my wall ofher for sure. Yeah. Well,
Candy, you're the boss over there. You've got you've got the weight on
your shoulders and a great season lastyear, off to a good start this
year. Always good to chat withyou. Always a lot of great information.
So thanks for joining. Thank youso much for letting me be a
(32:45):
part of your program. Hey,thank you, Candy. See see you
at the track. Yep, I'llbe there, Candy Criederman joining us on
horse Racing Northwest. Thanks to Candy, And you know she's mentioned Alex Cruz
one of her go to writers aswell. I saw Alex coming in the
(33:07):
jocks room yesterday or yesterday last Saturday, and he hadn't won a race yet,
and he wasn't happy at all,you know, because a lot of
other guys are piled up a fewmultiple wins here and there, and I
thinking I kind of snickered. Ihope he didn't hear me, but I
was pretty close to him because hewas, you know, And he went
out and of course he won thenext race on Saturday, and then he
(33:29):
won three more on Sunday, sohe's right there in the mix as well.
He really wants that four straight title. As we've talked about, very
competitive. You know, to beleading writer, you got to be a
competitive guy because you write a lotof races and a lot of class levels
and deal with a lot of people, and they expect you to ride hard
each and every time you're out there, and Alex certainly does. He's a
(33:50):
friend of the owners, trainers andthe betters. He's he is a trier.
Yeah, and rad Keep won sixout of twenty five, so twenty
four percent. A groan was rightat that mark as well with five wins.
Alex Cruz twenty percent, Sylvia oAmador twenty five percent. He's good
too. And as Bill was talkingthis morning, we got a much better
(34:12):
Josh room than last year. Yep, Alexis Valdez thirty one. Yeah,
I mean you can go seven deep. I think this year legit. You
know, uh, jockeys that arethat know how to ride for sure,
Montavos are very accomplishment, right Yeah, and Isaiah's and Riquez is a former
riding champion here. Yeah, youknow these these are these are Alexis Valdez
(34:36):
looks like he's going to be oneof the main guys for George Rosalez or
defending training champion. So that makeshim, you know, in the forefront
two. So yeah, it's Uh, I wouldn't bet against Alex Cruz,
but I think it's gonna be prettytough this year. He's gonna have to
earn it. And how about Montalvogetting into the Wenzel Barn early in the
season. You know, Tom ispretty interesting that way in that you know,
(34:59):
look at his Mile one or Jose'sand you know, wins a lot
of races around it, but he'snot one of the guys you think is
the top guy. He used touse a guy like Lorenzo Lopez a lot,
not one of the top guys, but certainly successful. You know when
when Tom uses him. So Tom'sTom's a thinker, as you know,
and uh, he's got a reasonhe met. You heard Candy mentioned certain
(35:20):
guys fit certain horses. You know, I think maybe that's what Tom does
with some of these guys too.And I'll say it again, Uh,
he helped get Rocco Bowen started hereas well. He put him on um
the son of Maker's Maker's Finale.Yeah, when the Derby when Booger Mitchell
was injured, and he taught Roccothat you got to do your homework when
you go out to that paddock. You gotta, you know, be able
(35:43):
to pass a pop quiz on what'sgoing to happen in that race. You
know, the gates can't just openand then you fly into action. You
gotta have a plan. When isRocco going to be back? I know
he's not riding here, but sawhim in the quarter shoot a couple of
weeks ago he was visiting. Hesaid June first, okay, which sounded
little ambitious. You know, yousee a guy with a walker there.
But I would not be surprised withRocco at all, you know, so,
(36:07):
but yeah, I think that's theplan here. A couple of weeks
good. Yeah, those jockeys aretough and uh they come back a little
sooner than doctors orders a lot.And doctors will tell you jockeys are remarkably
fit athletes who do tend to healfaster than you or I might you bet
(36:28):
okay, So thanks to Candy Um. Just before we take a short break,
The Preakness is Saturday again at Emeralddowns On Saturday gates open at seven
a m. Four simulcasters. ThePimlico card starts at seven thirty. The
Preakness goes at four pm. Racenumber thirteen and uh, you know,
(36:49):
only eight horses in the Preakness. The Derby winner is back Mage, the
only horse out of the Derby? Is that correct? Yeah? Yeah,
that's I got it. That's goingto be part of my sports short coming
up later. But yeah, firstMission won the Lexington has got two straight
wins since his maiden victory. He'slike just the three career races starting in
(37:12):
mid February. So I can't reallygo against Mage. Seen as how I
could him in the Derby, I'dbe looking for a price there in The
exact perform intrigues me a little bitin that he won his first start against
winners. It took him a whileto get his maiden, but not a
lot of those were longer races. Now he's won two straight at a mile
(37:35):
and forty a mile and an eighth. He won the Testio, which is
kind of the local prep there inMaryland for the Preakness fifteen to one morning
line. He's also by Good Magic, same sire his major Bill did you
take a look at the Preakness. You know, Bafford's got National Treasure.
Putting the blinkers on the rail expectingVelasquez to send you first mission for Godolphin.
Probably want to interest me. Andbrack Hawks seems to win every race
(38:00):
across America, So probably those arethe two if I'm gonna try and beat
the Derby winner. Okay, youdon't have time to look at it.
I haven't looked at it much.I'll throw out kind of a goofball.
You know, horse I liked inArkansas this spring and lost money on.
I did see him school in Ithink yesterday, and he's a good looking
horse Red Route one, okay, but again the style is maybe not favorable.
(38:24):
Deep closer yeah, yeah, andI guess you know maybe with major
Joe is at a little bit ofa concern for you. Yeah, he
did get squeezed out at the start. He actually broke out of the gate
fine in the Derby, which hedidn't in his previous two races in Florida.
But then he immediately got the sandwichjob from inside and outside of him,
(38:45):
which dropped him back a little bit. Costellano JJ got him right over
to the rail and then he youknow, of course he just had the
horse to move on the outside. But I don't think he's necessarily a horse
that has to be way back there, and I wouldn't think it, you
know, and with only eight runnersthis time around, so but he certainly
(39:08):
can pass horses. We've seen alot of passing by him. It looks
like the weather's fine back there too. Yeah, it might be a little
bit of rain though, is thatright? Yeah, nice today, but
yeah it can. It's gonna begreat, great tomorrow, Friday, and
then Saturday they're like, well, afternoon showers. I'm sorry, So we'll
see. You never know a pimblico. By the way, it was kind
(39:29):
of fun watching Javier. You justmentioned Javier Costellano and his little children were
so you know, overcome with emotion. And now there's still some you know,
we get old and jaded, butthere's still some heartwarming moments like that.
When you see that in the race, that was pretty cool, I
thought, and Gustavo Delgado had knowna lot about him, but winning the
Kentucky Derby, you know, smalleroperation like that, and you can just
(39:52):
see the tremendous emotion of the momentyou know, winning the Kentucky Derby.
That's doesn't get any better than that. Yeah, Costellano, you know he's
won two and one two among topjocks in New York for a lot of
years, was over fifteen and thatways, I got a ways on a
guy's mind a little bit, youknow. And then uh, kind of
(40:13):
when your leafs expected Powell, hegets the win. So that was kind
of that was kind of a neatdeal. Pretty big feather in your cap
to win the Kentucky Derby is aEclipse Award winning veteran jockey. You bet,
okay, We're gonna come back withMatt Johnson and more. We have
our sports shorts, some selections andtrivia as well. We'll return on horse
(40:35):
racing Northwest. Muckle shoot. Yeah, it doesn't matter what you do well
where you're coming from. What youdo is all at muckle shoot to scene.
Let the streaming wheel go round andthe knife will go on moments you'll
(40:57):
never forget. You're always good tohave fun. What you do is all
at muckle shoot. Muckles. AndI was thinking about what I wanted to
say about Dori, and Dori's oneof the few I probably the only friend
I'd look up to I just thinkabout when you're a friend, that you're
(41:19):
just a friend, right, Imean they're just guys or girls. But
Dori was different. We looked upto him. Um, we would uh
when you spend night by the way, that's another thing. We would spend
nine hours hip to hip every Sundayfor every Seahawk game. We did three
hour pre we did the game,we did a three hour postgame show.
(41:42):
Man, you gotta love and genuinelylike somebody to spend nine hours the whole
time next to him. And Iwas thinking about what made me think about
why did I look up to Dori? Why did I put him in that
role? And the first one was, man, it was his work ethic.
I've never seen a guy where Icouldn't outwork I could not outwork Dory
Monson. That was Paul Moyer ofCairo Radio and of course an ex Seattle
(42:08):
Seahawk who worked with Dory Monson formany years at Cairo and doing the pre
and postgame show on Seahawk games. And Paul was part of the memorial service
for the Monson family and a lotof friends as well, and one of
(42:29):
his friends in the year and Bythe way, I think I mentioned earlier
on the show that Saturday, weare going to have a Dory Monson memorial
purse at Emerald Downs. Dory wasa really big race fan and his good
buddy joining us on horse Racing Northwestright now, Matt Johnson, Matt,
good afternoon, Hey Joe, thanksso much for having me on. And
(42:52):
you just introducing me just brought backa lot of emotion because Paul was extraordinary
in his you know, in histribute to Dory that afternoon at the celebration
of life and and Dory was hewas many things. Not only am I
lucky enough to call him a closefriend, but he could outwork you.
I mean it was. It wasgreat to produce for him. I met
(43:14):
him in two thousand and five whenI started with the Seahawks, and I
had no problem with the host orno thought process that the host wouldn't be
um, he wouldn't be ready,he would have done his homework, he
would have done everything to be prepared, because Dory was going to outwork everybody.
Yeah that has come out with somany of his friends and acquaintances and
(43:38):
uh yeah, just an intense guy, um, but really knowledgeable and uh,
you know I had a love ofsports, so much came out when
Dory did pass unfortunately last December, his basketball coaching career culminating in a state
championship for the Shortcrest girls and andhis three daughters. Boy, let's start
(44:02):
right there. He was a realfamily man. And you tell us about
Dory, what did you love abouthim? Well, you just nailed it.
You know. I started with theprofessional side. I'll start with that
because I went from KJR Sports tothe Seahawks, and I'll never forget My
first game that I produced was Ibelieve August ninth, two thousand and five,
(44:25):
and it about August fourth that thatearly in that week, I freaked
out. I was thinking, Iam so over my head. What am
I doing? And I called Dorryand I said, I gotta be honest.
I don't know what you want.I don't know what you need.
I've never worked with you before. And he basically said, yeah, don't
worry about it. Yeah, don'tworry about it. We're fine, everything's
(44:46):
fine. Give me this this andthis and this, and we'll work together.
And he called me right down andI'd never heard one of the broadcasts.
And from there it was just trust. I just trusted him, and
so it started as a p professionalrelationship and it quickly Joe. I mean,
it's just when you bond with aguy. And we bonded over we
(45:06):
didn't bond over his show, andwe didn't bond We never talked politics,
and we never talked a show.We talked sports and we talked life.
And I just knew immediately that hiswife, Suzanne and his three daughters were
a B, C and D.And his work came right after and sports
came after that. And I waslucky enough just to talk ehawks with him.
(45:28):
And then it went into horse racing. I told him, I told
him that I was I had apart, you know, a part ownership
of a horse with Susie sour Wineand nineteen others, and he couldn't believe
it. We just we took offwith that horse friendship and we ended up
going to the two thousand and sevenBreeders kept together with my late father and
(45:49):
that was a thrill, the highlightwith Curlin coming around the corner there at
Monmouth. But still just traveling withhim and things. But he was a
family guy. He was a loyalguy. You couldn't find anybody. When
my father was getting sicker and sicker, I'd get a weekly phone call if
not more, from Dory and itwas it meant a lot. It wasn't
family, it was a good friend. So there was so much to me
(46:12):
and I missed him. And ahorse racing boy, he could handicap the
horses, and about once a monthwe would He would call and say,
hey, you want to bring thatpick six down, and we would try.
We never hit a pick six together, but we would handicap over the
phone. And boy, he wasjust such a pleasure to talk sports with
(46:36):
and and his family and just awell rounded guy. A lot of people
know him just by the radio, which is great, but he was so
much more. Hey, Matt Vincehere, Yeah, you know you mentioned
well round and I remember Dory probablythis Joe. This is probably in the
early nineties. Him and Steve Kellyhad a talk show, might have been
on King back in the day.And that's kind of what when I first
(46:59):
remember him. And uh, youknow, he did sports, he did
politics, Um, he coached basketball, he raised family. Um. Pretty
pretty remarkable stuff for a man whowas still relatively young. Absolutely, he
was just taken off that King Vince, you nailed it. It was I
believe it was on King Radio.Yeah, and he and Steve Kelly.
(47:21):
I heard some tapes of those. They played some tribute tapes of Dory and
Steve after Dory's passing, and theywere great. They were they were young
voices. And Steve Kelly I'm veryfriendly with and and uh boy, he
was antagonistic and Dorry would get onsome subject. But Dory. There was
a couple of tapes I heard Vincewhere they had some kids on and you
(47:43):
could just hear Dorry's voice inflection turn. He just loved being around it.
And it also to Joe's point, you know, coaching, you loved being
a helper, which turned out tobe a mentor. And he took the
Shortcress girls not only two states, but once hey, and I know it
was one of the joys of hislife was helping his gals. And three
(48:05):
of the girls, and I shouldsay they're young ladies now got up and
spoke at the celebration of life andit was moving about, you know,
new challenges they had and new questionsthey had for him. And who did
they ask? They asked Dory, not only was he intelligent, but he
gave his opinion to friends. Hegave his opinion in a soft manner of
(48:28):
like, hey, take it orleave it. But here's what I think,
you know, and that's I don'tknow in life. You know,
it's I'm in my mid fifties now, there's nothing wrong with having another opinion
that you respect, and you're like, oh, okay, I never thought
of it that way. And hewas just somebody that you could bounce up.
And not only Paul Moyer talked aboutthis, but just loyal. You
know. There wasn't gonna be Therewasn't something I was gonna do that was
(48:52):
going to cut our friendship off.He was gonna be there for the rest
of my life. And unfortunately itended way way too soon. Yeah,
excuse me if I don't know this, but I know I remember hearing the
news. I think, Joe,you might have been the first one to
tell me. Did people know thatdor was ill or was this a big
surprise or you know, we mentionedhe was far too young to pass.
(49:15):
But I remember just being stunned whenI heard the news. Well, it
was sudden. He wasn't in greatshape, but it was sudden and that's
how I would phrase it. Idon't know. You know, it's funny
people have asked me that question. My mom was given seven months, seven
years to live and she made itsix months. My father had cancer for
(49:36):
twenty two years. So sometimes itcan be so sudden and sometimes it can
be drawn out. And this waspretty sudden. And and that's I think
the shock of it all. Andyou know, I would also I would
like to say that, you know, when it's sudden, you're just you're
just glad that everybody knows how wefeel about each other. And he loved
(50:00):
his friends, and I loved Dorypersonally. Dory did so much media in
this town. He was part ofthe King crew that broadcast the nineteen eighty
five Long Acres Mile. I rememberthat well. I was working there then
and he worked with he had theheadsets on and Tony Ventrella and I think
(50:20):
Basil Fraser was part of that broadcast. And yeah, I've got a DVD
of that, And you're right,he was doing interviews, kind of a
roving reporter, Gary Bays after therace on Chump Salmon. Yeah, and
the King Show. You guys mentionedhe was a sports producer for King TV
for several years before him and SteveKelly got that show, and then of
(50:42):
course the Cairo Show, which justgrew and grew and grew, and involved
with the Seahawks. Yeah, hejust really I heard after he passed that
he didn't really sleep very much. And Matt, I can really believe that
from all the attention he paid toall the different facets of friends and family,
(51:04):
and and he loved sports. Heloved to make a bet once in
a while, and I can seethe guy probably didn't sleep much more than
six hours a night. Oh yeah, I would take the unders on that
show. And I'll tell you itjust had to be with him being prepared
to the max. Not only washe involved with his wife and three girls,
but he had his friends, hehad his hobbies and his show.
(51:29):
What I appreciate Joe and Vince isthat, you know, Joe, I
produced your show way back when thewind Play Show, and I started as
an overnight guy from midnight to sixand then I moved to you know,
on Saturdays, I was six amto noon, and I moved my way
up. And that's what Dorry did. That's why I appreciate it. It's
not like he was given anything. He started at the very bottom and then
(51:52):
he had one of the highest rankedshows you know in Seattle there at Cairo
for years, and so that's whatI appreciated. That he worked, he
worked for that nothing was given tohim, and there's there's something to be
said. So no, he wasa workaholic. That's that's one thing.
That he was a grinder to themaxum. I saw that picture of him
(52:15):
interviewing bays with after the Chun Samonvictory, and and he would go,
I know, in college he wouldgo down to Long Acres and he developed
his own speed figures. I don'tknow if everybody wants to hear this now,
and he han not share, butbut at the time he had a
speed figure system that treated him verywell and that he used that quite often.
(52:37):
And he tried to explain it tome a little bit, and it
was way over my head. Um. But while we're sitting next to each
other on some I don't know, the third race on the Friday at Monmouth
and he is coming so close tothe supers right first, second, third,
and fifth, and all he wouldever say was, oh, my
handicappain was right on. You know, that's all he would ever say.
(53:00):
He wouldn't get emotional like me.I got to get up and walk around
because I'd be so fun. Yeah, he could handicap horses like I'd never
and I'm talking quickly. And hewasn't into necessarily like I would go,
you know, win or win place. He was into pick four's back east.
I get a text on a Sundaymorning at ten that he was one
(53:22):
leg away from the picks early pickfive at Tampa UM. But yeah,
he was. He was a grinderin life, and everybody, if you
were a close friend, lucky youbecause he got you got a piece of
it. Because his energy was verymuch spread out. Yeah you know he
I know, he told me personallyhe helped put himself through college by wagering
(53:45):
at long Acres and hitting some goodones and and that's the truth. I
didn't know if that. I mean, he had told me that that he
basically paid for his you dubbed degreewith going to long acres and things.
And I never doubted he wasn't someoneto brag or you know, boasted a
big time. But now I thought, wow, you put yourself to college
(54:05):
through handicapping and I could barely hita Kentucky derby alcohol. It's not easy
to make money gambling, and Dory, if anybody could do it, it
could be him and was him.Yeah, just your enthusiasm for his friendship
of yours is coming out Matt,And Matt's a pretty likable guy. I'll
(54:29):
say that we got to know eachother when he worked at KJR. And
your career has really moved forward aswell with the Seahawks and Sounders and soccer,
so congratulations there as well. AndDory was somebody you met along the
way that you'll never forget. Andboy and listening to the eulogy, so
(54:49):
many people are in that boat, from the girls that he coached, to
his colleagues at Cairo to people atthe church. Just a real unforgettable guy.
Yeah. I mean it was atrue celebration of life. Um,
you know, it's just it's againwe meet these I don't want to say
characters because that's not the right word, but we meet these people in our
(55:12):
lives that you have to in themiddle of it. You have to say,
all right, this person special, this person special and lucky me.
And there was a number of peoplewhen I worked at the Seahawks that that
I noticed immediately the class of people'sSam Adkins, Paul Moyer, Dave Wiman,
Dory Monston, these guys that itjust jumps out that you're you know,
(55:35):
Joe, I mean, and I'mbeing serious, meeting you way back
when and then always running into youand you taking care of me and helping
me at the track. You meetthese people and you realize, well,
lucky me. You know, it'sjust lucky me, and make sure you
keep in touch with this person becausethey're special, they're they're different, they
have a couple of qualities that ayou wish you could have and be they
(56:00):
will be lifelong fringe. And youknow that's part of being a Seattle likee
too. You know, I haven'tmoved kind of incorporate that Dory was from
Ballard and so you just you meetthese people in your hometown and you just
kind of glom onto each other andI you know, you just kind of
say lucky me. But I'd alsolike to say thank you Joe, and
(56:20):
thank you Vince for helping me andthe idea of the Dory Monson Memorial Purse.
Sure, it's just a small littlething that we could do, and
maybe it takes off a little bit. Maybe it's a second annual next year,
and maybe we're raising funds in thefuture. I don't want to get
too far ahead of myself, butthanks to Emerald Downs and both of you
to be receptive of something like this, not only that Dory was into horse
(56:44):
racing and things, but just agood man. He was just a good
man if you knew him, andif you were affected by him like I
was. Again, I just thinkthe word is lucky me. Well,
we are certainly looking forward to Saturday. And by the way, I always
was looking forward to you and bigAl your father coming out to Emerald Downs.
He was always a great guy tosee come around the corner as well.
(57:08):
Yeah, he was a character, and Emerald Downs he could let loose
a little bit because of course Momwas driving us full home probably or I
was at least going to Queen Anne. She was driving my dad home.
But it was Emerald Downs was abig part of our life. We were
there at least every a weekend amonth sure while they were both healthy,
(57:28):
and it was it was a familyevent. And and thanks to you,
Joe that it was just so Youjust made us feel so welcome, and
Joe my dad would say the samething driving away. Boy that Joe with
he's quite a guy, isn't hedone? Every time? And I told
my mom, I said, whenare you going to talk big about Joe?
He said, well, before weget to the freeway, he'll say
something. But yeah, it washorse ration was a big part of our
(57:51):
lives and I carry on, notto the same degree, but it brings
I told some people from Cairo thatif dor Dorry Monster can bring us all
together at the track, I don'tsee people from that life anymore. And
if he can bring us all tothe track, I think it's lovely.
I think it's extremely fitting that hebrings a bunch of different communities to the
(58:12):
track this Saturday. I think Ithink that's just it's perfect. It's perfect
looking forward to it. Matt Stretch. Some people call him Dutch, but
Matt Johnson, thanks for the wordson Dory months and we'll be doing this
again on Saturday here at Emerald Downs. Thanks so much for having me on.
(58:34):
Guys. I'll see him, Joe, I'll see us Saturday, Yeah,
you bet. Matt Johnson joining usclose to Dory for a lot of
years through the Seahawks Radio TV.And you know, we didn't see Dory
that much out at Emerald Downs inrecent years. But you know, um,
you could bet on your phone andI saw him a few times.
(58:57):
He he's still aware of what wasgoing on, you know, Matt Johnson,
I don't know nearly as well asyou do. Joe. What a
nice fella. And you could hearthe the you know, the great strong
feelings he had for Dory, andI echo, Matt, you've arranged this
thing that I think it's great thatwe're having this remembrance on Saturday. Yeah,
(59:19):
looking forward to it. Dorry MonsonMemorial Purse will be raised number three
on Saturday here at Emerald Downs.Okay, well, we've got a couple
more things to do here. SportsShorts Selections, Trivia Sports shorts for this
week. What do you got, bins, Well, I'll do a little
post mortem on a Seattle cracking.Okay, very nice second season. You
(59:45):
know, uh, make it throughone round, a bend the defending champs
and take Dallas to the absolute wallin a really good seven game series,
and I hear a lot of this, you know, well it's it's too
bad they're out, but boy,you know those the future is so great.
And while that's true, you know, there's one thing I learned about
(01:00:07):
sports. You gotta strike while theiron's hot. And they were clicking and
things were going good. Let's lookat Boston or tamp or Toronto. It's
hard and Boston has a record settingyear. They're out, you know,
just like that. So, youknow, I think the future is bright.
They got some good young upcoming playersand it was a tremendous season.
But boy, it's disappointing to getso close. And then because I really
(01:00:30):
think they could have given Vegas areal nice battle there and then uh,
you know, they would have beenunderdogs again. But uh, you know,
I no knocks. They laid itall out there on the ice.
They they gave it their absolute bestshot. So but it's just a shame
because it's it's hard to get thatfar winning Stanley Cup. You gotta win
sixteen games and even winning seven aas a heck of achievement. And they're
(01:00:53):
fairly young team. They are.Yeah yeah, but you know, um,
you never take success for granted. And they had a good thing clicking
there. You know, maybe nextyear the injuries pile up. You know,
they had Burrokowski. I think ifthey have him, he might push
them over the top in the playoffs. But yeah, the future is bright.
Good job by Dave Hackstall, thecoach, Ron Francis the general manager
(01:01:15):
here, Jay Leech one of theirtop assistants. It's getting interviewed for the
New York Rangers positions, so thatwould be a big boat of seattle.
But well deserve it on his end, Okay, Bill Well, the Mariners
are kind of toiling around five hundred. They lost yesterday against Boston. It
was like the win was incredible, but now they have a day off.
(01:01:38):
They got played the Braves this weekend, which is no easy task. But
then they finally come home. Theygot four games against the lovely Oakland Athletics,
which they need to win three orfour there, and they played the
team that I'm familiar with, thePittsburgh Pirates, for three. Yeah.
And then after that, the thevaunted New York Yankees come to town.
(01:02:01):
So Vince and I will be attendingthe game a week from Tuesday, the
Pirate game, no, the Yankeegames, yes, yes, the Pirates.
Uh we race on okay, youknow Saturday and Sunday, so make
it tough to get back over therein time. But I'll be attending a
(01:02:22):
couple of games the Athletics next weekas well. So they've got pitching.
I mean they've that's not the problem. Now. Last night it was a
bit of a problem because Marco Gonzalezdidn't have his a game or anything close
to it. But you know, the Mariners are you know, you know,
get Julio going and then you knowthe rest will come, I think.
(01:02:43):
But the good news is the divisionhas not gone out of hand.
The Asteroids are not playing that greateither, even though they had a great
comeback win against the Cubs last night. But I still think things are are
okay in Mariner Land and we'll seehow they do. You know who's pitching
the more night against the Braves,Yes, Bryce Miller by two and oh
the Ozo point four seven e rasetting all kinds of records for fastest this
(01:03:08):
or fewest allowed that, and uh, just watching him, I think,
you know, he's not going tobe able to maintain this face. But
boy, he's got some serious highheat and uh, and he throws strikes
he didn't want anybody. Yeah, and you know, his off speed stuff
is okay, it's good. Iwouldn't say it's as good, you know,
as fastball as his bread and butter. But boy, you know it
(01:03:30):
looks between him, Kirby and LoganGilbert, that's three pretty live young arms.
Yeah, it's just good to seelast year Miller A yeah, double
a huh. Yeah, but heskipped the triple when they had when uh,
Robbie Ray went out and they needand then someone who else? Was
it? I missed the turn anduh might have been when Markham missed the
(01:03:52):
turn and yeah, and they broughthim up and he's been lights out.
But now going against the Braves tomorrownight in Atlanta, Uh, that'll be
a little bit of a test. That'll be a big test. And then
on top of it, it's youknow, they're not going to pitch him
that much. They're they're thick andlong. You know, they don't they
don't let rookies pitch at two hundredinnings these days anymore. You're right,
(01:04:14):
Uh, he's he's always on apitch count. And you know it's best
that he has relied on as afourth or fifth starter, not a third
starter, if you will, AndI think that'll be the case. Um,
but yeah, he's he's a bright, bright prospect for for the end.
I hope he's pitching the night wego, Yeah, the Yankees,
that would be kind of fun.Yeah, okay, I'm hoping it's Logan.
(01:04:35):
Of course, I'm a big Loganguy, and Logan you know that
you saw his best start of theyear a couple back. He had a
no hitter going through. You know, the guy never gets any run support.
Now it's one of those. He'sthe guy that had the perfect Yeah,
four innings or something for six.Six was at the game, and
I was at the game, andthen I had to tweet it out,
(01:04:56):
and of course the next half inninghe lost. It's a nice work,
Glad. What am I gonna do? I have the perfect game going,
I have to mention it. Okay, all right, Well my sport short
the Preakness um The last four KentuckyDerby winners did not run in the Preakness.
(01:05:16):
Well, okay, I'm gonna waitat back, did I run in
the Derby? Authentic did run inthe Preakness which was actually after the Derby
in the COVID year of twenty twenties. That's like, that's like an anomaly
that okay, Okay, what's thatthe stat again? Here? All right,
okay, Authentic did run in thePreakness. But you said the last
(01:05:39):
four Derby winners have not run inthe Preke. Yeah, they didn't run.
Mandaloon got dqted into first, hedidn't run, country House didn't.
That was his last career race intwenty nineteen. He got dqted into first,
he didn't run in the Preakness, and then Reached Strike didn't run in
the Preke. Goods last. Okay, So the previous twenty two Preakness stakes,
(01:06:03):
eleven times the Derby winner won therace. And that's exactly what Niro's
hoping for on Saturday, right,So eleven out of twenty two from nineteen
ninety seven Silver Charm up to twentyeighteen Justify eleven times the Derby winner one
not just ran in it, butwon the Preakness. But until American Pharaoh
(01:06:26):
came along in twenty fifteen, noneof them won. That's right. They
won the Derby, they won thePreakness, and then for whatever reason,
couldn't get it. So what Idid there is I just threw out of
some and building like some different datathere. I mean, it was it's
you know, Anyway, the Derbywinner did really really well in the Preakness
(01:06:47):
for a long time, and it'sjust kind of funny that with circumstances it
hasn't been Derby winner to the Preakness, and well usually it's a slam duck
this year. The only horse thathas a chance with the triple Crown this
year, that's the only one goingMay, which is the only one.
Okay, all right, how aboutsome selections. I'm going to go to
that eighth race on Saturday, andyou know, Fantastic Day is going to
(01:07:10):
be my top pick in there. He's been a little dull in Arizona,
off a bit of a break fromEmerald Downs. He did win his final
start here last year, and hedid win fresh here last year off about
what about a five month lay offfour and a half and he came out
(01:07:30):
of a race at Turf Paradise inJanuary where he was unplaced as a favorite,
got a couple of months off andone at Emerald Downs. He's only
had about five weeks off this time, but he's just been a really impressive
horse, especially here five for twelve. You know, loosed his whiz beat
him a couple of times last year, not by all that much. Big
(01:07:51):
Field should be a pace on Talvofor George Russalis. I see six to
one on you guys this morning line. I'll go fantastic day in that eighth
race, Bip. I'm gonna gowith Clayton Delaney in that eighth race for
Jeff Mets. Same ownership. Ilook that up sometimes you get to,
(01:08:12):
you know, piece it together tosee if it was some sort of private
sale. Yeah, so I likethat. It's the same ownership. That
race at Sunray Park. He lostit, Bye bye, Bobby. Hell
of a horse. Heck of ahorse. So was second in the Sunland
Park Derby as a three year oldin twenty twenty two. Just to give
you some contacts, and the forumis kind of clouded up a little bit.
(01:08:33):
He got some turf races and he'sdone all okay on the turf,
but he's got some route race.I always like to look at what we're
doing that on an afternoon in thosedirt sprint races. You know a couple
of really tough races at Sunray andSunland Park, and you go back to
race at Los Alamitos July of twentytwenty two, was it before that,
(01:08:55):
his last dirt sprint before those twostakes races, and then he actually had
it's one at the distance of fiveand a half furlongs. He broke the
maiden at Los al Back in twentytwenty, so you know, if there's
enough pace, and I was gladwhen Joe thought that there would be uh
in this race. H Clayton Delaneis gonna come from off the pace,
just like Fantastic Day. So andyou get Louis n. Groan aboard for
(01:09:16):
Mets. So I'll go with ClaytonDelaney in the eighth race. I think
there's gonna be plenty of pace inthat race. And I'd say this,
bye bye, Bobby. I don'treally not familiar with that horse, but
he's been in both of the lasttwo races than Clayton Delaney and the other
horse. So what was a racebefore that? Clayton Delaney who won that
one Dean's List. Yeah, that'sanother serious race horse. I looked up
(01:09:38):
those and he held his own againstthose one hundred grander from seventy five thousand
dollars race. So yeah, noteasy race clay Delaney. Yea to make
him on the morning. I thinkseven to two interesting newcomer to the track,
and I agree with Bill a loton that. My only concern would
be he's gonna need a trip.And yeah, that's a very uh cool
(01:09:59):
race to handicap. Yeah, that'sa great race. Eleven horses at Emeraldowns.
In that one, I think it'seleven, isn't it? Yep?
It is going five and a halffurlong. So that's the eighth of nine.
We have nine races both Saturday andSunday at Emeraldowns. Teacher Appreciation weekend.
Tell all your school district employee friends. They get free admission and a
guest as well, both Saturday andSunday here at the track. Okay.
(01:10:26):
Last week's trivia was who's the onlyEmerald Downs seasonal leading stakes jockey that wasn't
based here? And Bill hugh Backgot that answer and he didn't really research
it. He just kind of knowsEmerald Downs history. Chris Loseth won six
stakes in our inaugural season of nineteenninety six, four of them on name
(01:10:48):
for Norm who was our first horseat the meeting. And Chris low Seth
Hall of Fame writer in Canada, two time Sovereign Award winner. Yeah,
Chris was the only leading stakes jockeysingle season that wasn't based here, and
Bill gets surprised. Send your answersto trivia at Emeraldowns dot com and Bill
(01:11:10):
said he likes the more obscure questionsbecause you know that makes you think.
So I gave him another. Thisis another obscure one, Fellas for a
horse that's five years of age orolder, which Washington Bread of five and
up had the greatest single season earningseason, single earning season five years old
(01:11:32):
or older of all the Washingtbreads andall the history of Washington racing. Who
has the most money and one seasonat that age or older? Okay?
Send your answers to trivia at Emeraldownsdot com. Thanks to Candy Kreiderman and
Matt Johnson for joining us, theDory Monson Memorial Purse on Saturday, Teacher
(01:11:54):
