from here, all of friends willbe drinking. Well, you know,
you gotta worry about your friends afteryou go. So in heaven there is
no beer. That's why we drinkit here. By Galley in the studio

(00:20):
with me from Blessings in a backpackas Kim whole squaw high Kim. It's
good to have you here and fromAtrium Brewing. What is your official title?
Your head brewer? Okay, Spencer, that's awesome. So they don't
call you a distiller because that's adifferent process. Head brewer is pretty awesome
too. Good to see, Spencer. What are you drinking to, sad
Adriam? By the way, I'mdrinking Our October fests are fest beer.

(00:42):
It's is the season and it's freshright now. So oh it goes with
polka music too, doesn't right? That's right, sounds so great at that
time of year. I'm having abeer festival, so atriums like three years
in now three years and we'll celebratethree years on September twenty five. What
are you learning from your three yearsrun in this about the beer culture in

(01:04):
Louisville. Well, we're learning thatwe're loved and we're just so thankful for
the support we've been given by thecommunity. We are learning to make what
you guys want to drink and setup. We're able to make the nerdy
stuff that we want to make that'sgood. So people are very they're not
shy about saying it. This isnot for me, but I love such

(01:26):
and such totally, And our bartendersengage them and relay that information to us
in the brewery. So fantastic. And Atrium Brewing is located Logan. We're
at Oakan, Logan and then we'vejust opened our second tap room out in
Northern Commons. Oh fantastic. Sonow back to Blessings in a Backpack.
Kim is here and that's that's theorganization you work with, and Atrium is

(01:49):
going to help you guys. We'lltalk about that in a minute, but
let's give people a basic sense ofthe mission of Blessings in a Backpack.
Kim. We feed kids on theweekend who qualified for the federal Free and
Reduce Lunch program. They depend onthe meals that they get during the week
at school, but when they gohome on the weekend, they often have
nothing to eat, So that's whereBlessings comes in. I would guess during

(02:12):
the JCPS little bus mehem, thatreally deepened the problem for a lot of
moms. I'm sure it did.Yeah, anytime schools are closed, it's
an issue for the kids who dependon this food. So then how's it
done? Lessings in a backpack? So somebody stuffs them backpacks filled with food
to take home. Yeah, wepartner with Cisco. Cisco's already delivering the

(02:37):
cafeteria food to the schools, sothey deliver Blessings food as well, and
then either volunteers or staff members atthe school will pack and distribute the food
each week and give it to thekids on Friday before they go home.
Obvious does not refrigerated stuff. You'retalking about dry goods, especially that can
last or the weekend. Right,we have a lot of criteria. Has

(02:58):
to be shelf stable, peanut free, high end protein, low end sugar.
There's a lot that we have toconsider, and we work with nutritionists
to make sure that we're giving thekids the most nutrition we can for the
dollars that we spent. Yeah, where did the dollars come from? They
come from the community. We don'ttake any government funding, so we completely
depend on the generosity of our communityto keep this program going. Right now,

(03:23):
we're feeding about sixty eight hundred kidsin Loysville, but there's almost eighty
thousand that qualify for our program.Wow. Yeah, So you get nice
guys like Spencer from Atrian Bruin Ye, and then that changes things absolutely.
So what's up? How are youguys involved? Spence? I looked into

(03:43):
a dinner seat at their Pact toSack event a couple of years ago,
and it was at that moment thatI said, I will get involved one
of these days. We had justopened. We weren't able to sacrifice funds
at that point, but I knewexactly what I wanted to do and this
year was the year to do it. So just getting there, it's just

(04:05):
such a great group of people beingaround each other. I said, Hey,
we're gonna do this beer, We'regonna do an event based around it,
and we're gonna get to sponsor aschool out of it. We're gonna
get to feed Shelby Elementary out ofit. So you have an anniversary coming
up and then you're tying this toan event. What a release of a
new flavor. Yeah, So basicallywe'll release this beer on Thursday, September

(04:27):
twenty eighth, and we'll also playBingo and we'll do a big a fundraiser
with Blessings in a backpack. Sowe normally do Bingo every Thursday. It's
free to play. We got somelittle dinky prizes. September twenty eighth,
we'll release We'll be releasing Hunger Crushpale Ale, So one dollar from every
draft poor is going to go rightback to Blessings to feed Shelby, and
two dollars from every four pack we'llgo there as well. The Blessing's crew

(04:48):
will be on site at both ofour locations on Logan Street and in Norton
Commons, and they'll be selling theBingo cards for one dollar, so you
can play as many cars as youlike per round. You can give them
extra money if you would like tofeed some kids. And we've got a
lot of really cool and fun prizesdonated to the to the Bingo that night
to give you some adcentive to buymore Bingo cards. We've got gift cards

(05:09):
from all sorts of local restaurants andbars. We've got some blessing swags,
some coolers. I mean, there'sthere's a whole plethora of things to play
for that evening. What kind ofbeers did you bring in here today that
I can't have? While I'm onthe ear, well, Terry, you
are not allowed to have this tripleipa or this watermelonosa or this modern Southern
lagger or this october Fest sorry, which every one you have open smells great?

(05:34):
Oh, you might be able totake one home. I might be
able to do that. Not openit until I get finished thriving. Correct,
Correct, that's the way out works. But that's great. I mean,
it's I'm glad you guys are partof the beer universe because really this
city has a rich history of beerand people appreciate it, you know,

(05:55):
the creation of it and the creativitythat's involved in it. Yeah, it's
it's like modern brewing techniques mixed withthis old tradition of Louisville brewing. And
you look, you look back. We're one mile away from the Fank Fair
Frank Fair's ice house, right andwhere they stored all that beer. And
beer in Louisville really does go wayback, and it's just so fun to

(06:16):
see history. Uh, meet withlike modern trends and art, and it's
just a culmination of so many things. You know, beer is such a
thing to just it just makes youwant to rub elbows with the guys sitting
next to you. It is youknow, hey, what are you drinking?
What is that? What's that like? Let's talk, Let's be friends,
You're best friend. The camaraderie aroundit is is why we do it,

(06:38):
and watching people smile is just partof it. How's your new Norton
Commons. Uh, it's great,it's great. The different demographic out there.
It's nice to see people not haveto drive all the way across town
to come get a four pack orof our recent release. It's been really
it's been really fun for us.And it's just it's a constant. It's
constantly evolving out there. So then, are you also a beer delivery guy?

(07:01):
Do you do that too? Misterhip brewer? Head brewer? That's
it, just just brewing. Theynever say, Spencer, we gotta get
such and such out to Norton Commons. I got it. I got a
guy for that. We deliver outthere twice a week and my sales guy
takes care of it. His nameis Brent Mathis's he's a saint. Isn't
it fun getting to say I gota guy for that? It's pretty great.
It's pretty great. I mean, you know, it's these people are

(07:24):
the backponent of our business and wewouldn't be able to do things like this.
Blessing is beer and stuff without everysingle person in the company pulling their
way and doing their job. Andit's great small business. That's the backbone
of America. So you're you know, you're an entrepreneur and I love what
you guys are doing. Thank you, and thanks for being helpful of Blessings
in a backpack. That's how it'streasured mission. I've wanted to do it
