(00:00):
Thanks a ton. You're on newsradio Way forty whas. Congressman Brett Guthrie's
a regular guest on this show, but today he brings along a friend who
happens to be Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy. Welcome, mister Speaker.
Thank you for having me. I'mexcited it's my first time on your
radio show. Thanks Terry. Ihad the speaker when he called me two
(00:20):
thousand and eight and he said,Hey, I'm Kevin McCarthy from California.
I want to campaign for you.And I said, nobody's ever heard of
Kevin McCarthy. And I'll never forgetdriving and him learning about Dry counties versus
Wet Counties. We're driving through andwe took him to Abraham Lincoln's birthplace.
So anyway, I know you wantto talk to him, so well,
he's been a few times in mydishery. We're good friends, and so
(00:42):
probably having I had no idea,I appreciate the connection here, obviously,
Speaker. The inquiry and the impeachmentinquiry, of course, is all over
the news everywhere, so we knowwe've been hearing about it. Kentucky's James
Coomber, of course, has beencollecting evidence. We know he has twelve
thousand pages of subpoena bank records andtwo thousand pages more of suspicious activity reports.
(01:07):
But what bit of authenticated evidence pushedyou to officially launch this inquiry this
week. Well, you know thework that Jamie Comber has been doing,
the part that has been and we'vebeen back in the district for the last
month in a house a month anda half. You've watched where the president
told everyone that he had nothing todo with his son's business. Since that
(01:30):
time, we found now he madethe phone calls, he did, the
dinners where the Sun got new porsches, got millions of dollars. The family
set up twenty shell companies. Theygot more than twenty million. We now
know that he used fake names andemails where he talked about Ukraine. We
(01:51):
now have a staffer who worked therewho tells Hunter Biden's business partner that the
vice President has signed off on theBIZMA talking points. There are just too
many questions. You've got an FBIinformant who said went to the FBI and
number of years ago that the FBIuses that he is going to that he
(02:12):
knows there's a bribe and they won'tfind it because of these shell companies which
we never knew of. Too manyquestions that we need to answers to,
And that's exactly what impeachment inquiry is. It goes in and looks at and
gives the Congress power for their subpoenas. So as Jamie goes through and looks
for the bank statements, the creditcard statements and others will know whether where
(02:35):
the facts are and be able toanswer these questions. Well, your counterpart
in the House, the Minority leader, King Jeffreys, said, quote,
Republicans have launched an illegitimate impeachment inquiry. That is a kangaroo court, a
phishing expedition, and conspiracy theater rolledinto one. So my question is is
there do you have solid evidence ofhigh crimes and misdemeanors or is this just
(02:58):
a deeper die to try and findthose. Well, the difference between an
impeachment impeachment inquiry is impeachment inquiry givesthe Congress the power. Why the administration
fights is to provide documents. Thinkabout the benefit the bidens have when they
just waste time. If you're beinginvestigated by the irs, The IRS never
(03:21):
lets the statue limitation runs out.The federal government actually did that for Hunter
Biden. So in our quest weneed these documents to answer these questions the
American public wants to know. Sothat's all that it's providing us to do.
It gives you further reach. Yes, essentially, all right. Now,
Obviously people are pointing out that therewas no House vote on this,
(03:44):
and earlier years ago you were upsetabout Nancy Pelosi's doing the same thing.
Is this like the hairy read nuclearoption that they broke a certain protocol and
so now you're saying it's fair game. Well, this is how they change
so much in the House set newpresident. So it makes the same point
(04:05):
that we did. This is howthey set the House to go forward.
We'll just set the House to goforward the same way. Okay, Clearly
you're getting a lot of pressure fromthe ultra conservative right, Matt Gates and
others. He's talking about ways totry and get your removed from your seat,
and people are wondering if this impeachmentinquiry is just something to appease that
(04:26):
part of the Republican faction. Hey, Terry, this is Brett. Yeah,
I'm for this. I think weshould move forward on this. And
Jamie camer I know he does yourshow and a lot of people in his
district listen to this. I've seenhim walk through all the information that we
know. I mean, we knowthat you know first saw it wasn't Hunter
Biden's laptop, that's what the WhiteHouse was saying, and we know that
(04:46):
it was. We know that PresidentBiden engaged in business discussions with his business
associates, all these things that arefalse. And what's so the reason I'm
for it's not that Matt Gates's word. I'm for it is because most of
the stuff we have found by subpoenaand bank records. Now, we do
know that Hunter Biden's emails talked aboutspending his money on his father. So
(05:08):
they keep saying, you don't haveanything where President Biden personally profited from helping
his son get this money. Butwe do know their emails, and so
we need to look at is otherrecords that come from the bidens, which
would be credit card records. Wheredid the money go for? And the
only way you're going to get thatif a court orders it, because they're
certainly not going to provide it evenit's the legitimate congressional issue, and by
(05:30):
my view of coming around to this, doing the impeachment inquiry gives up standing
in court to make sure we getthere. I think the American people want
to know if Hunter Biden's emails tohis daughter to say I will never treat
you like my father's treated me,mandating I give you half of my salary.
We know those exist. We justhave to have proof to where the
money went. And I think it'sabsolutely legitimate to move forward, and so
(05:55):
I don't necessarily run in the circlesof people you just mentioned, and I'm
for it. The Speaker McCarthy, what is your response though, to those
temperamental teammates on the Republican team thatare pressuring you about budget dealings and the
funding of governments. Well, MattGates isn't pressuring about that. Matt Gates
is working with Eric Swalwell. It'sabout an ethics complaint that Matt has had
(06:18):
against him for a couple of Congresses, and he wants me to try to
influence the Ethics Committee. I willnever do that. That is an independent
body that holds everybody accountable, andI will never put Eric Swalwell back on
the Intel Committee. So I mean, if they want to utilize that to
try to remove people from speaker, having Eric Swalwell with the Chinese spy and
(06:41):
Matt Gates because he has an ethicscomplaint, I just think this office is
too big to play with those typeof games. And I've never take impeachment
lightly. I'm just following the evidenceof where it's at, and i just
think there's too many questions out there. You've got to get an answer.
So it was no pressure by Matt. Matt is trying to pressure me to
do something to help him beneficially becausehe's got an ethics complaint against himself.
(07:03):
Right. He talked about the agreementin January when you obviously went through all
those different votes to finally get thechair. But are you legally bound to
the demands of these ultra conservatives bysome agreement you made with them in January?
Well, I don't know what agreementMatt's talking about, because Matt never
even voted for me. Matt justbought me a whole time. The only
thing that was out there is thatwe changed from having five people to make
(07:26):
a motion to vacate the chair toone, and so Matt's trying to utilize
that to remove me with Eric Swalwell, and think about it. Thomas Massey's
now on the Rules Committee, andI know he's also in your listening area.
How effective he has made himself byputting it by getting on the Rules
committee. And so I would say, you got Comber Andy barrs on on
(07:48):
the Chinese Committee. I'm sure ofHealth Committee. How's the dean who's very
a mentor to Kevin. So,I think we have a lot of people
here that work with Kevin to getthings done. Obviously, there's a president
'sual election next year. Some peoplethink this is a revenge move to counter
the Democrats multilayered legal pursuits of PresidentTrump. And I'm sure I know what
(08:09):
your answer is on that. Youalready said this is a serious matter,
But what's the timeline? What doyou what are you seeing on this impeachment
inquiry in terms of how it rotateswith the calendar page flips toward the next
election. Well, I don't thinkthis is about elections or anything else.
This is about integrity. You wantto make sure that your public officials aren't
(08:33):
for hire. You want to makesure that you could get the answers.
If your president lied to you andutilize the office and withheld a billion dollars
of American taxpayer money to remove aprosecutor in Ukraine because the prosecutor was going
after a company that his son wason the board of, wouldn't you want
(08:54):
to know about that? And Ijust think from that from that part,
it's important that America knows the answersbecause every every point that the president has
made, he's had to backtrack onhis comments. Yeah, well, that's
a that's a pretty alarming bit ofvideo. We've all seen that one a
zillion times. So you don't knowhow long this inquiry may go. It's
(09:15):
open ended, no, because theone thing I've learned from this administration,
they fight us every time we wantto get information. That's why you had
to go to impeachment inquiry. Andthis will only help us when we get
into court that we'll have strength tobe able to get the documents that we
need to. Mister Speaker, Obviously, there's other congressional business pounding at your
(09:37):
door. They're funding the Department ofDefense, the farm bill, Ukraine,
a disaster relief, the budget itself. What's the outlook for completion on these
various projects. I'm sorry, whatdo you say? I was just talking
to him as you're asking the question. Terry. We talked this morning when
the Speaker had a group of usthe Caucus this morning. Talked about border
(10:00):
security with the end with a continuedresolution, and I think that's extremely part.
I think the American people when Iwas home in August talked about just
the fact that we have complete lackof control of the border, fentinal comminger
across the border, and so wetalked about tying that to this moving forward.
Well, we've got a number offunding bills we've got to get through.
We know we've got an open border. I think this is an opportunity.
(10:24):
But when you look at all thework that the House has been able
to do about securing a boarder parentsBill of Rights, cutting back on the
runaway spending here in Washington, makingmembers actually show up for work, we've
got to get this work all donebefore the thirtieth. I think we'll be
able to get there. You thinkit's all going to get done and getting
people back to work is important. You mean have them on the premises,
(10:46):
Yes, sir, all right, let me ask you about a couple of
other things. Kim Jongan just metwith Vladimir Putin pledging help with the Russian
invasion of Ukraine. Why is theUnited States mired in another seemingly endless conflict.
What do you see in terms ofour out strategy. You know,
this rings me real concerned because itlooks like the thirties where you got these
(11:07):
access of power moving together China,Russia, North Korea, and Iran.
It's very concerning to me for whatthe world will look like in that situation.
I think from another predicament, we'vegot to make sure how this moves
forward. Putin is an invaded Ukraine. We've got to be able to stand
(11:28):
there. But the one thing isyou don't want this new access of power
to grow. They all want toexpand their spirit of influence. Yeah,
they're unsettling images coming out of Moscow, that's for sure. Of seeing these
guys. And inflation. Obviously wecan talk about impeachment and all the other
things that happened, but but basicallyAmericans go to the grocery store and they
can't believe what they're paying. Whatthey're getting for a hundred dollars are what
(11:52):
remedies do we have at hand hereby the Congress at large to try and
ease inflation. Well, that's agreat question. As you know inflation as
well. What government spends too much. And when the Democrats were in the
majority, they added that six trilliondollars they brought us inflation we warranted about
and the President told us it wasjust only temporary. We found that it
was not. It's really harmed thatAmerica. For the third year in a
(12:13):
row. You actually have less moneytoday because what inflation has been eating out
of all the families from what theycan spend. We've been able to cap
the in our last bill for debtceiling on how much government can spend.
That was a big victory in thepart you've got to help supply chain,
got to get people back to work. You've got to incentivize people out you
(12:37):
get into the workforce. We've gotwork requirements coming forward to help people get
back into the workforce. And thatwas a big victory as well. So
I think you're going to start seeinga turn and get a little better economy
here since the Republicans took the majority. Last thing for both of you guys,
the UAW is talking about a strikewith the Big Three by midnight tomorrow.
We don't really know what will happenfrom that. We have two Forward
(13:00):
plants here in Louisville, Speaker McCarthythat would probably go dark. Can you
are the leadership offer any help toavert this strike? You know, we
stepped in. I didn't, butthe President stepped in with the railroad strike
and came up with a big settlementfor the railroad. So it's set up.
You saw what happened with the UPS, which is in our area as
(13:20):
well. You see what's going onwith the UAW. You know, this
really needs to be between my viewof it needs to be between the automotive
maker and their employees. I followthe automotive industry pretty closely. I believe
Forward and I know Ford particularly, but the others have also offered good packages.
We want our workers in Louisville andother Forward plants in general motors in
(13:41):
my district as well. I've takenKevin to the Corvette plant and he saw
that. He actually saw where thecorvettes had fallen into the earth, that
collapse, and we don't want thatto happen in our automotive industry. It's
really moving again. We just cameout of the chips and so hopefully our
employees and the unions will look atthe deal. If they don't think it's
right for them, they need todo what they need to do. But
it seemed like you're pretty strong offerand what we're just coming out of the
(14:05):
COVID, out of the chip crisisand now there are vehicles on dealers floors
for people to buy. Hopefully wecontinue that momentum going forward. But when
the federal government says the present precedentof engaging and helping one side of the
other, I think everybody wants thatassistance, and I think it needs to
be between the employers and the employees. And hopefully it'll be fair and people
(14:26):
will get a fair wage and beable to raise their family with a good
living. And I think Ford inyour area in general motors were I mean,
there's Ford people in my district.I know the plants are actually in
Morgan McCarthy's, but in general motors, I think people will they offer a
good living and people will make agood living. Hopefully we can keep those
open. It'll hurt the economy tonot do it, that's for sure.
All right, Congress and Guthrie appreciatethat. Speaker McCarthy, thanks so much
(14:50):
for your time today too. Thankyou so much for having me on your
show. Ford to coming back sometime, Thanks so much. At his House
of Representatives, Speaker Kevin McCarthy andKentucky Congressman Brett Guthrie live from Washington.
