Magic Club's thirty fourth annual It's MagicShow is actually tomorrow night at Ercelin Arts
Center. David Gerard, longtime friendof the show, is back in studio
with me. Go to see David. Thanks sir, Glad to be here
with my buddy Brett Soul. That'swhat I was gonna say. Longer friend

(00:24):
of the show. We can wego back away. We go back to
LRS back in the day when youwere Oh, that's prior to that danger
boys qmf's wait wait, wait, before the appreciated that. When Ron Clay
and I were on LRS in theeighty the eight hundred building, the Chemical
of Sound, Remember we would goget the sandwiches down there at that cool

(00:48):
little shop they had in the eighthundred building. I have no idea if
they still have a sandwich shop there. I know they've referbed that building,
but I haven't been in since theday I walked out. I have not
either. It's been it's been aminute. It's great times. Something we
had, you know, Ozzy Osbournewalking in there, Charlie Daniels, people,
Brian Adams. They've just walked inthere. Hey, I remember the
day we had the private concert withJohn Prine. That was a good day.

(01:10):
Yeah, it's cool. And allthe people that lived in that building
were like, who are all theselong haired people that smell a smoke coming
in and out of like smoke. It's good to see you again, Brett,
same here, sir. So you'repart of this this magic show as
well. Yes, sir, Ihave been part of the Little Magic Club
for all about ten years and nowI'm back in it. And I'm actually

(01:30):
the technical guy for this show iscoming up. I'm the guy that makes
sure all the props where they needto be, and all the music get
played, all the lights get turnedon, and make sure that they look
good. And I'm the guy younever seen about the man behind them.
That's right. So, David, you can't function in a show like this
unless the tech person has it alltogether. Can't do it. You just
can't. And I appreciate the factthat we appreciate that. Most of us,

(01:51):
my buddies anyway, understand that.Yeah, for sure, make you
look good. No matter what youbring to the table. They can see
you've got a big lineup talent tomorrowand I I think it's gonna be a
good show. Matt Soul, I'lljust run off the names. You're Matt
Soul, Dennis m Buddy August, and Sebastian Pendley. Now Brett might want
to say a little bit about thosetwo guys. Yeah, the I'm part

(02:14):
of these society American Magicians is withthe oldest society, oldest magic society in
America, actually the world. AndI attended their convention in New Orleans as
past July, and two performers downthere, Sebastian Pendley and Buddy August,
were part of that show. Sebastianwas part of these Stars of Tomorrow show,
which isn't he a kid? He'snine years old, incredib It's going

(02:34):
to do my tricks, so Ican't do my trick. He's gonna do
my trickal okay, it's he's anincredible for nine years old. He's really
really good. And then the otherin the affection room, we have Buddy
August, who is in his seventies. Yeah, he looks like Nostra Damas
or something. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, but he is going to
be part of that show. He'sdoing actually a couple of sets tomorrow,
you think, so some new stuffplus the show that he did in the

(02:54):
sem contest. And to get thatcontest is a lot of people apply if
you can make it, and Buddymade it into the contest. And he
also was in the International brother theMagician's Conventions International Brotherhood and Society of American
Musicians Magicians Magicians. Buddy was inboth contests. I saw him in Pittsburgh
back in July. Do you everhave a rumble among these two organizations?

(03:17):
We occasionally have a joint convention, which is the closest we come to rumbling.
Oh that's cool, magicians. Andit's actually been here in Louisville twice
in the last maybe twenty years.Yeah, it doesn't happen very often,
but they love coming to Louisville. So you've already said, Sebastian's going to
do one of your tricks, soeverybody works when it's not my trick,
the trick I love it's been. It's a classic trick called the linking rings.

(03:38):
And I've just heard wonderful things abouthis routine. I'm looking forward to
seeing so everybody corresponds and says,I want to do this that I went
producer, Sir Dennis Olms, theshow producer, and one of Dennis's job
is to make sure you know whatyou set list, so we stay out
each other's way. You don't haveyou know, five guys doing the rings
and you know, yeah, rightso But then Jimmy McKnight, James,

(03:58):
Jimmy, I think you might Imet Jimmy. He's a he's a young
man I've been helping working with fromShelby County. And then Graham Mappin,
who is another one of our youngerperformers. He's not as young as he
used to be, but he's stillon the younger than than a lot of
I was, and very talented. And it's a fun night. It starts
at seven o'clock. Tickets are eightdollars and twelve dollars. That's children and

(04:19):
adults. There's no reserve seats. She's just first come, first service.
A beautiful theater. How close doyou need to be to really appreciate the
tricks? I think the best seatsare ten twelve rows back. You should
be that's right. It gives youmore peripheral vision and you're not you know,
looking up, I mean you know, we had that incredible show at

(04:39):
the Crusade that was just just nuts. Yeah, because Lance Burton brought he
bought the house, he brought allthese people and we're doing things that I
sat there ten rows back and Ithought, what in the world is happening?
How am I seeing this? Thisstuff blows my mind. I think
house seats typically in a theater orten rows back on the aisle. Yeah,

(05:00):
you know if they're going to giveyou seats, and that's to tell
you something. But I know mywife and I had front road tickets from
David Copperfull at one time and itwas not a good seat. You were
just too you were just too close, and you know you're taking it.
Yeah, you're head bobbing on allthe time like it's a tennis match.
That's right. Well, all right, so this show the Louisville Magic Club.
And by the way, how manymagicians strong is the Louisville Magic Club

(05:21):
of Is it hundreds? No,it's not a hundred, but it's probably.
I think our membership roles well, probably have a hundred. Night at
our meetings were average thirty to fortypeople per meeting. We welcome new members
all the time, you go goto Louisville Magicclub dot com and check that
out, or you want to joinus the same time, and that's also
where you can go get tickets LouisvilleMagic Club dot com okay or David Gerard

(05:41):
Magic dot com. Click on calendar. I've got the link on my calendar
too, and it's a walk upshow. When you have these meetings,
are people inventing new things or there'sa new concept or a new dimension of
an old Yes and no. Alot of times we have what called jam
nights where people just kind of workon magic. Other knights will have a
lecturer come in. We've had worldfamous lectures come through people you may have

(06:02):
seen on like Penatila's Fools have comein lectured for us and we learn from
them. We share magic amongst eachother and we try and advance the magic
arts. We invite people for allages, and it's like say, it's
a very inclusive club. Everyone's welcome. But like this kid who's nine years
old, obviously there are flexibility issuesthat come into play too. You have

(06:23):
to it can't be a four yearold or a three year old. There
are certain things that obviously you haveto be there has to be an understanding
of magic or what actually is thecomprehension of what's going on. But the
way I put is, you haveto be old enough to know what's not
supposed to happen. Right that wayyou want to figure out, oh,
I can fool somebody by doing thislittle move here. That's when the magic

(06:44):
starts. And a lot of startfairly young. I mean, nine's a
pretty young age to start most ofus. Like for me, it was
like ten to twelve years old whenI first got my first little magic hit
and you know, experimenting, how'dyou get hooked in? David? My
Dad's the one that got me started. But the Georgia Magic Club is what
set the hook. I kind ofoutran what d that's right. You're a
Georgia native, Yeah, And Igrew up in Atlanta, and so dad

(07:08):
kind of I kind of outran whathe knew about magic. But he had
a friend who was more professional. And when you went to the friend and
said, my son loves this stuff, what do we do? And he
says, you come with me tothe Georgia Magic Club And we went to
what And man, I still rememberedTerry the night walking in. He said,
call the guy over and said takeDavid over here, show him a
few things it's like. But neverlooked back. And that's the advantage of

(07:31):
the club. The club helps helpspeople, you know, wherever you come
in, whether you're seventy years oldor seven years old, you come in
and we'll help you learn. Youknow, people took took us under the
wing and look, Muhammad Ali wasfascinated by it. Yeah, know of
all people, and it's just funny. Some people get the hook at him

(07:51):
at various stages in life and thenthey're like, I need to learn this.
And most people know or have itone time in their life, done
some magic trick, some simple andyou know how you dabble with stuff and
move on. But then for somepeople it just you just find yourself in
this and it's a great way tojust have a lot of fun and make
people smile and suspend reality for justa little bit. All right, this

(08:15):
is tomorrow night at Ursulin Arts Center. That's a Sacred Heart. It's in
the back. Yeah, you cansee it from Lexington, but you got
to drive around to the back andthere's typically some signage and come on out.
All right. Seven o'clock tomorrow night. Tickets at Louisville Magic Club dot
com. We're not doing a tricktoday, got one? Oh I hoped
you did? Okay, good, okay, So don't look just there's a

(08:37):
card. We'll look at it later, okay. And here's a here's a
little bag. Open up the littlebag and tell everybody what's inside. There
three objects poured into my hand. They're three objects inside. They all have
to do with magic. Yeah. And there's a like a this is the
thing I would use to mark mygolf. It's a point. It's an
IBM medallion kind of thing international brothood. And this is a little like a

(08:58):
sponge bunny. And there's one morething in there, okay. And the
other thing in there is a shortpiece of a look like a little little
magic Want to just lay them allon the table. There lay the magic
one, the rabbit, and themedellia. Yep, here's the once.
You don't want you to pick upany two of those objects. Any two
any two of those objects. Well, you know I love the madelia.
Okay, just pick up that andI'm gonna there it is clicking against Okay,

(09:20):
it's a really pretty medallion. Andthe magic one. I put them
back in the bag. Okay, there you go. So I've left a
little sponge, a little sponge bunnyout. And before we did any of
this, I put a card onthe table. You did put a card
on the table, and on theback of the card it says, you
will choose the bunny rabbit. God, why do you do this to me

(09:41):
every time? How do you getshe's done it again. It's just because
I have a small brain. Onething I will mention is before the show
actually starts. Uh, might wehave close to performers working in our lobbies.
Other club members be out there doingshows, small effects just like this.
Okay, cool cards and coins andup close all right? I like

(10:03):
that. That was another good trick. I have no idea how you do.
You're kind. I have a smallbrain, That's all it is.
He figures these things out. BrettSoul great sea Again, sir, thanks
for being on the media ride withme all these It's been a fun ride.
Man. I'll tell people to goTerry miners Ago. What's he like?
What do he really like? Ilike, he's the same dupe think
Louisville legend. I have known youfor forty years. I'm unbelievable. Two

(10:26):
I think. Yeah, that's aboutright. Yeah, look now, but
you've known me for almost that long, oh boy, David Gerard. All
right. The show is tomorrow nightat Ercelin Arts Center, seven o'clock,
louivill Magic Club and that's the website, Louisville Magic Club dot com. Great
cast of characters, including some kidwho's astounding. I'm understanding. Hey,
you're a Georgia tech guy too,are you know? Not? The football

(10:48):
games? How come if you're soul, Magic could beat us. That's true,
we finally beat you. All Iremember is the last one. I
don't want to think about those shortmemories. You have to have one.
A great show tomorrow night. Guysback in a minute on news radio,
