Leasa Fox here. Thanks so muchfor listening. This is the Ihearts cal
Show in honor of September being ChildhoodCancer Awareness Month. My friends at Sargeant
Pepperoni's Pizza stores in Newport Beach,Lici, Viejo, and Irvine all here
in southern California. They are onceagain teaming up with Julian's Lego Corner to
raise funds and collect legos all monthlong lego sets for patients at Chalk Children's
(00:25):
Hospital of Orange County. It's acause very near and dear to the owners
and partners and their families as theylove bringing people together and raising this money
and doing this for so many sickkids at Chalk on behalf of Julian Dunn's
family after they lost him so manyyears ago. I want to talk all
about it because there's just a littlebit of time left in the month of
(00:45):
September, so we want to raisethe money, collect those lego kids for
the kids. Oh, there's somedelicious pizza in your near future. By
helping out with this cause, andI'm so happy to have on my pals
the co owners and Newport Beach localsof Star Pepperoni's pizza store, Stan Fraser
and Jeff Roberts. Hi, guys, Lisa woo Hey, Well, I
(01:08):
know it's not a fun topic, childhood cancer, but what you guys do
bringing people together every September, raisingso much money and gathering so many lego
kids for these kids is something trulyto celebrate it so thank you for that.
I know you look forward to thisevery year and it just keeps getting
bigger and bigger each year. Yeah, Lisa, this is just a it's
(01:30):
an ongoing effort, you know, founded by Andrea Dunn, Julian Dunn's mother
ten years ago, and we arejust so honored every year to walk a
step by step with Andrea and bringjoy to these kids a Chalk hospital.
She is overwhelmed every year by thegratitude and the love that the community pours
(01:51):
out. So yeah, this isthe best time of the year for us
at Sergeant Pepperoni. I love it. I love it. Now I know
Stan as the drummer, you know, the original old drummer from the band's
Sugar a whoo hoo. Yeah, and then you guys know each other.
I mean you're now business partners, but you're really you know, Newport beach
childhood. Bestie's right, you've knowneach other, you your whole lives.
You grew up together. That's correct. Stan and I've known each other since
(02:14):
kindergarten. We both grew up goingto Sergeant Pepperoni's. And when the opportunity
came to buy the restaurant ten yearsago, Stan was one of the first
people that that popped into my mind. And and here we are a little
over ten years later and just anincredible history with our third restaurant under our
belt. And really, more thananything, it's the friendship and the families
that own the restaurants together that reallybrings the peace, love and the pizza
(02:37):
together. I love that peace, love and pizza. But we're you afraid
to go into business with your withyour buddy, your bestie. I mean
that could be a slippery slope doingbusiness, mixing business with friendship. When
you have Stan Frazier as your friend, there's no second thought ahead. Thank
you well, and Stan, Iknow you're quite the foody and you know
you've got your meatballs, your famousmeatballs on the menu and Sergeant Pepperoni's already
(03:00):
you know it was doing well beforeyou guys bought it. So did you
did you mess with the menu much? How much have you tweaked it or
did you do a total overhaul tomake it your own. It's a great
question. Yeah, we absolutely slippedthe entire menu when we took it over,
and I was a part of thatwith some other some other employees.
But we try to change things up. We add salads constantly. We have
(03:20):
a Pizza of the month. It'sin rotation. In fact, the pizza
the month for the month of Septemberis the Grandpa's Pie. And you know,
I think are quite a bit inthe kitchen, as you know,
Lisa. So it's a delicious pizza. It's got sort of a blush sauce
as the base, and then wedid chop it with mozzarella, melted onions,
and then we do a fennel sausageand then we finish it with basil,
so it's a flavor bomb and andand all the proceeds from from the
(03:43):
month of September will be donated toa Chalk hospital through Julian's Lego corner.
Yeah, so it's all the posteds, Sergeant Pepperoni pizza, the pizza of
the month, the grand Pause Piethat you just described sounds delicious and all
the housemade desserts. All will directlysupport Julian's Corner. Julian's Lego Corner at
all three locations through the end ofSeptember. Right, you know, at
Lisa, you got to come workfor us. You know, you know
(04:04):
the spiel. You're doing great.I do know the spiel and I appreciate
stand that many times you've come upto drop off some pizzas here at the
radio station. We love, welove the pinwheels. We love what else
do I love? Oh? Theknots, the pinwheels, I love.
You delivered a mushroom pizza one time, but to die for. So the
pizza is good, y'all. Iwould not recommend it if it wasn't fantastic.
(04:26):
I'm Italian Irish we take pizza seriously, so it's phenomenal pizza. And
knowing you guys, you know you'vegot big hearts and you use this opportunity
to give back and come together asa community. Jeff talk about you know
it goes back and you're talking aboutcommunity and bringing people together, especially in
the month of September, to dogreatness for the kids at Chalk talk about
the history goes back with the Dunnfamily and your kids kind of growing up
(04:50):
together and went to the same school. Talk about that, Talk about how
you knew Julian before he passed.Yeah, thank you, Lisa. Yeah,
the dun family our neighbors of ours. Julian was diagnosed with a brain
tumor in kindergarten and he and hisfamily fought for five years. They were
in and out of chalk. Theyspent over two hundred nights over that five
(05:10):
year period in chalk with Andrea,Julian's mother, staying with him all of
that time. It was a hardfought battle and unfortunately, Julian lost his
battle in the third grade. Wehad our daughters at an early age said
hey, mom, dad, wewant to do a lemonade stand and raise
money for Julian for his family. And so that started in kindergarten. My
daughter was five years old at thetime, My daughter, Lawrence, she's
(05:33):
now a sophomore at the University ofUtah. It's that legacy that we continued
today, was the lemonade stand. Then we started baking desserts and giving proceeds
and now, as Stan mentioned,it's our Pie of the month and then
all of our in house made desserts, our world famous cheesecake, our Oreo
cheesecake, our Tira Massou, ourbrownies and cookies, all of these items,
(05:56):
all of the proceeds go to Julian'sLego Corner. And last year it
was over fifty five thousand dollars incash donations in addition to a couple hundred
sets of Legos brand new Lego kits. So it's a really great history.
It means so much to our ownership, families and the community at large that
supports Sergeant Pepperoni's and Julian's Lego Corner. Ah, and I can only imagine
(06:19):
how emotional the day is. Andyou're able to bring that money that you
collected, bringing up from all thedonations and bring all those Lego kits to
those kids who are stuck in thehospital going through lord knows what, and
to see the smiles in their faceswhen you bring in all those donations,
my gosh, it's a family affair. And what we do is we literally
(06:41):
load up our personal vehicles and getas many as our employees and family members
and crew members as we can,and we drive these Lego sets from Newport
beach up to Chalk Hospital and OrangeAnd if I can't tell you what the
feeling is like, because there's nothingelse like it in the world. Knowing
that we're trying to help and givingback, and the look on these kids'
faces and all the hospital staff,it's like no other feeling in the world.
(07:03):
And we can't wait to try tooutdo what we did last year.
That's our goal, always is.Even if we come in, you know,
with five dollars more or two moreLego sets. Man, we feel
so proud and happy that we're ableto help out and be a part of
it. I love it and wecan all be a part of it just
by dropping off Lego sets. Donatedbrand new Lego sets for these kids in
the hospital throughout the rest of themonth of September at all three Stargeant Pepperoni's
(07:27):
locations, right, Alsa, Viejo, Newport and Irvine. That's correct,
yes, And then and then there'sa direct link now two Chalk Hospital Julian's
Lego Corner for any donation direct online. And Lisa just wanted to add the
stand wonderful comments about that feeling. We also this year, we went up
last week and we provided a pizzalunch with salad and pasta to the patients
(07:51):
and their families and the nurses anddoctors and supporting staff on the oncology ward
there at Chalk and you talk abouta moving day for all of us involved.
To see these kids from two anda half years old up to teenage
walking the halls with their ivs andto bring a smile to their face and
have them, you know, askfor a cheese slice as a two and
(08:11):
a half year old. It isincredibly endearing. It's inspiring for us to
just do the right thing, youknow. So we really appreciate all of
the support that the community is giving. It's going to such a great cause.
Think of those kids in their hospitalbeds, able to make a brand
new lego kit, build it intosomething special, take their minds off of
the treatments they're going through. AndI know it's a it's a family affair,
(08:35):
and so the parents are obviously sopleased to see what we're doing out
here in the community. And wecan't thank you enough for all of your
support. Oh my gosh, ofcourse I love you guys. I love
what you're doing. I love whatyou're doing for these kids and especially just
that visual right if you guys shutup with all that the pizza, throwing
them a bit of a pizza partyat the hospital at Chalk. Everybody loves
(08:56):
a good pizza party. Come onand just to take a break for what
they're having to deal with on aday to day basis, the staff and
those kids, and to know thatthose Lego sets are coming soon. To
remember, you have until the endof September to donate and drop off any
Lego set, Lego kit it's allgonna be Go into Julian's Lego Corner at
Chalk Children's Hospital, Orange County.Drop your donations off at any Stargean Pepperoni's
(09:18):
Pizza store location and New pro Beachelies of Viejo and Irvine. And for
somebody who maybe hasn't purchased a Legoset in a while, what's popular?
And where do I go? AmI going to target? Am I getting
Star Wars stuff? What do Ido? It's all of the above,
Leica Costo, I mean, anyof those, any of those avenues to
be able to get these Lego kitsinto the hands of the kids. Again.
We collect all the way through theend of the month. We will
(09:41):
continue to deliver into the month ofOctober as well. So yeah, but
there are lots of resources to buythe legos and dropping them off to any
one of our three restaurants, NewportBeach, Irvine or Eliso Viejo. We
will make the delivery with the smileon behalf of the community. So we
thank you again for supporting us.Okay, but am I buying? Star
Wars lego kids are a lot?I mean, is that what's popular?
(10:03):
Star Wars stuff is always popular, but what are the kids loving these days?
What lego kids am I buying?Stand? You know, there's a
there's a lot of Disney stuff outthere, there's Harry Potter stuff, there's
all sorts of the Star Wars stuff, and like just said Costco, I'm
a Target person, so I loveTarget. I know they have a huge
selection of different types of lego sets, but those are just few. I
(10:24):
think Star Wars though probably trumps themall, but there's there's so many.
There's Batman, there's Titanic. There'sall sorts of stuff, so there's no
shortage of options. And what arethe store hours for me to drop off
my lego kit? Donation eleven amto ten pm at our Newport location,
eleven to nine at our other Irvineand Eliso Viejo locations. Okay, and
(10:46):
then how are we doing cash donations? I know you'd mentioned a link,
but we can Can we donate cashin store or how should we do a
cash donation? If you're able tohave, we have at our point of
sale. We take donations in store, we take it through a credit card
process or but all of those donations, dollar per dollar, go straight to
Julian's Lego corner. And again whenyou're in there having a beer and some
(11:07):
pizza, make sure you pick upthe pizza of the month. All proceeds
go from the pizza of the month, the pizza of the month, because
proceeds from the pizza of the monthand all the desserts are all going to
this charity. Stan, describe thepizza again, because now I'm getting hungry
from the first time you described itthe Grandpa's pie. So we start off
with our Sicilian sort of thick, pillowy dough versus our New York style thin
(11:28):
crust, and then a layer ofour blush sauce, which is kind of
like a creamy tomato sauce with garlicand fresh herbs that goes down, and
then we have melted onions, freshmozzarella cheese, and then we have a
fresh fennel sausage crumble, and thenwe've baked that off and we finish it
with a ton of fresh diced basil. So it's a flavor bomb. It's
a really rich and delicious pizza, and we encourage you guys to come try
(11:52):
it. And like I said, all the proceeds for the pizza of the
month and all of our desserts willgo to Julian's Lego Corner. Well,
I love that the goal every yearis out top of the previous year,
so hoping to raise more money thisyear, raise more Lego kits. And
then you do like a big thankyou party to everyone who gave and donated
and bought pizza and did you look, a big blowout jam session kind of
a party at the Newport Beach venue. And then usually I get a tipsy
(12:13):
call from Stang on a Lisa,I wish you were here, We love
you, thanks for your what's thedate of the big thank you party this
year or this month? Yes,Lisa, that is scheduled for Wednesday,
September twentieth pm at our Newport Beachlocation. We have some special guests that
(12:33):
will be performing that night, andyeah, it's an incredible night of celebration.
Most importantly, Andrea Donne gets toaddress the community on that night and
share her story, and yeah,it's amazing how many people come out and
really raise the flag for Julian's Legocorner. So that is Wednesday, September
twentieth at our Newport Beach location startingat six pm. I love it.
(12:56):
Plus at you guys are always inneed of anyone who's wanting to donate,
even a corporate sponsor. If youwant to have your name on the Sergeant
Pepperoni's Pizza menu, I'm sure theycan work that out for the right donation.
Stop by and talk to Stan orJeff about the possibility. But either
way, find out more about allthat's going on at all the Sergeant Pepperoni
Pizza store locations Newport Beachliso Viejo, and Irvine for the month of September,
(13:18):
all in honor of Childhood Cancer AwarenessMonth and on behalf of little Julian Dunn,
their neighbor's son who lost his battlewith brain cancer after a five year
a five year of battle, soon behalf of his family who started Julian's
Lego Corner. They're just hoping tomake the lives a little bit brighter for
other kids and other families who aregoing through their fight of their lives as
(13:39):
we speak at Chalk Children's Hospital,Orange County. So whatever you can do,
