Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, it is Fox and this is the iHeart So
Cal Show. Okay so.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Project Angel Food their mission to nourish the health and
spirit of people facing critical and life threatening illnesses by
preparing and delivering medically tailored meals with love, care and dignity.
And they've been doing it all these years, since nineteen
eighty nine, and now thousands of Angelina's who are in
need rely on Project Angel Food. So thank goodness, they're expanding,
(00:28):
and they've got a big fundraiser coming up on the
twenty seventh, their Angel Awards, and we are hoping you're
going to join in and help make the magic happen.
They're always need of volunteers, always need of drivers, so
many ways to be a part of this incredible organization.
So let's dive in as I've been a fan of
theirs for a long time, a fan and a volunteer
for a long time, especially since their CEO is so
(00:50):
wonderful in my longtime. Dear dear friend, Richard au Hi Richard.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
By Lisa, Oh my god, this is horrible that the
way we get together is through doing radio.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
It's horrible.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
I don't even see each other. You're so busy it's
not horrible.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
It just means sad that we have to keep it
clean because you know, we are on seven the shows
on seven iHeart stations, so.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
We have to keep it clean.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
That's keep it clean.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
That's the only horrible part. But always joy to talk
to you.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
And you know, when I'm not volunteering there, I feel
like I worked there already. You know, my boyfriend, the
love of my life has been has been actually working
with you more so than voluntearing since the fires. God
bless him, and thank you for letting him deliver meals
for his mental health.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
It's been very key to keep our family going, so
thank you for that.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
He's wonderful. He's just like he's won the heart of
the staff and especially the clients. Yeah, he's just going
delivering and connecting and doing a great job.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Thank you well.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Him.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Working at Project Angel Food has been very healing. And
it's nice to have a job. Not everyone's job has
a mission like yours does. And what a great opportunity
for people listening right now to be a part of it.
I know you rely heavily on volunteers to work in
the kitchen, to drive the vans, deliver the food.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I mean, the need is so great.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
That's why I think it is you' rais enough money
for this new expansion that's happening.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, this is incredible. It's the biggest project we have
undertaken in the history of Project Change of Food in
thirty six years. So it is a thirty thousand square
foot campus. We will have two buildings, all of this
(02:45):
impact in the heart of Hollywood. We are doubling down
on Hollywood. One building is going to be a brand
new food production kitchen facility that is set to open
in time for chrismas us. How amazing is that projecting
into Food's Christmas gift to Los Angeles.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, we got to do a little hard hat tour
and got a preview and we were just like.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Wow, yeah, what did you think?
Speaker 2 (03:14):
I just was so impressed by what you're doing there
in Hollywood. And because you were able to raise the
funds because of so many generous people who donated and
the people that you were reached out to, because you
guys are very well connected. Because of the money we
were able to raise through a number of ways. My gosh,
You're just gonna be able to feed so many more
people with the larger food prep areas and the bigger sinks,
(03:37):
the massive freezers, I mean, just so much more room
to do more and feed more.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Absolutely, we're going to be able to triple the amount
of people we serve because right now, I was just
speaking to our receptionist, Jamie, and she said, we are
getting more phone calls because some organizations have had to
sh shutdown because of funding cuts, So meals on wheels.
(04:05):
Other organizations are struggling, are struggling, and people are coming
to us saying we need help, we need food, We're sick,
we're hungry, can you help us? So the need is
growing and we're one organization that needs to continue to
keep operating because you and I both know food is
(04:30):
not an option.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Well, and especially when we're talking about the people that
you're feeding. So breakdown because I mean, since this began
in eighty nine, twenty million plus meals have been delivered
to those living with cancer, diabetes, cones of heart failure,
HIV and a's and other life writing illnesses. A breakdown
the types of people I just mentioned who you take
(04:53):
care because, like you said, more people are calling, more
people are applying. If you're listening to this program, and
you know of someone who is sick and would like.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
To apply, This could be such a.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Game changer for them and help them in so many ways.
They can apply right now at angelfood dot org. But
talk about the people that you serve, Richard.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
The people we serve are the people who are often forgotten.
They are the people who if you have a neighbor
who never comes out of their home, who always has
their blind straw, and you wonder what's going on in there.
What's going on is they may be attached to an
(05:32):
oxygen machine, they may be in a wheelchair, they may
be bed bound, or they may have some other illness
that's keeping them in there and isolated. And those are
the people you know. When you and I get sick,
everyone calls, Can I bring you a cup of chicken soup?
(05:53):
Can I come visit you? If you're sick for a week,
some of those calls stop coming. Then if you're sick
for a month, forget it. If you're sick for a year,
no one's calling you. Our clients have been sick for
six months, a year or even longer. Were their new friends,
(06:14):
were their new family. We're the constant in their life
every single week, we are there delivering meals. I'm going
to tell you a story. We have a client in Altadena.
Her name is Warna, ninety years old with dementia and
I think she has diabetes as well. So she lost
(06:36):
her house in the Altadena fire. Since January seventh, she
has moved seven times.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
I can't even imagine. That's terrible.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
This is a woman with dementia, she doesn't recognize her surroundings.
But guess what each of those seven times, Project Angel
Food has delivered meals to her in her new homes
and it has been the same delivery driver, Samantha, and
she recognizes Samantha to one constant.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Yeah, that's the bond, you know.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
I just know from volunteering to the bond that you
make with so many of these sweet clients. And like
Richard said, many people are alone, and sometimes you're the
only visitor or you're the only it's sad to say
only friend, you know, and that, but that bond is
so special, and sometimes they want they're a little chatty
and they're kind of excited sometimes to have.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Someone at the door.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
And of course you're bringing their meals for a week,
so you're giving the gift of food and your company
and your love and your kindness, and so many of
them could just see the appreciation and just to have
a moment or smile just kind of like lights up
the room for a second. And it's really special to
know that we have the power to do that. Being
part of the Project Angel Food family.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Yeah, it's she has something that's pretty special and incredible.
And it takes a special human being who wants to
do this kind of work. It takes someone who is selfless,
someone who says, I want to do something for someone
(08:17):
I don't know. I want to do something that makes
the world a better place. You know, if you're worried
about what's happening in the country and the state and
the city in the world, turn to Project Angel Food.
That's where you see goodness. That's where the best of
(08:38):
Los Angeles comes out.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
And you see it too, and you feel it when
you volunteer in their kitchen. Right now, the kitchen, the kitchens,
it's a temporary location in Lincoln Heights and Lincoln Heights area,
but the vibe and the love is right there in
Lincoln Heights. And then eventually, right when the new campus opens,
we'll be able to move back over to a divine
near near Melrose. But essentially you feel just I don't know,
it's it's such a positive vibe in the kitchen, the
(09:02):
people that you connect with, loading up your car, loading
up the van. If you become a higher driver, and
just feeling good about what you're doing, you know, knowing
that you're helping people and truly making a difference in
these people's lives, it's a beautiful thing.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Yeah. And you know, especially during the fires, we had
eight thousand people, eight thousand reaching out to us saying
I want to do some good? Can I come? Volunteer
people came to the Lincoln Heights kitchen unannounced, said I'm
an extra hair pair of hands, can I come? So
(09:37):
when they saw the devastation, they didn't know what to do.
Maybe they couldn't donate money, but they could donate time.
And Annie Lennox came into our kitchen and she thanked
the staff and thanked the volunteers, and she said, Project
Angel Food turns helplessness into hope.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Amen.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
You absolutely do. You currently prepare and hand deliver free,
medically tailored meals annually to more than seven thousand plus men,
women and children, and that's about twenty eight hundred any
given day, and all the neighborhoods all over Los Angeles
County and it's huge right LA County and then some oh.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
We do all four thousand separate under square miles of
LA County. So we're in Hollywood, we go. I was
just talking to one of our drivers yesterday. I said,
where were you today? He said, I was in Palmdale.
We go all the way to Palmdale. Took him an
hour and a half to get there. Then he started
(10:43):
delivering to forty people in Palmdale, then another two hours
to get back because he's in rush hour traffic. So
that's what we do. Even though it's farther. People need
our help there, so that's where we go. We go
to Long Beach, go to Santa Monica and also Pomona.
(11:04):
We're all LA County, every city you can think of,
Huntington Beach, boil Heights, you know, all the way to
the valley, the entire valley. Our biggest coverage area is
the downtown area, mid city and south South LA. There's
a lot of neat there and.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
They are delivering delicious, medically tailored meals that are flash
frozen so essentially they're ready to go and containers that
just pop right in their microwave, so it's very easy. Again,
you're delivering the sick people who many who are alone
but also not able to go out and shop feeling sick.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Cancer is very expensive.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
You know, it's just so extremely helpful in terms of
making life a little easier, but also the food is
so healthy and nourishing for their sick body. Touch on
the food and how your project Angel food dieticians and
team work directly with these clients doctors to make sure
they get the diets right for their ailments.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Yeah, so these are medically tailored meals because we believe
food is medicine. So if you have diabetes, we have
a meal that helps bring down your A one C levels.
You don't just take medication, you take food as medication.
If you eat the right food, like diabetics, you need
(12:21):
to have brown rice instead of white rice, and whole
week pasta instead of a regular pasta. Our dietitians and
our chefs work together to curate the perfect meals. The
dietitians make sure it has the right nutrients, the right portions,
that the chefs make sure that looks good and taste good.
(12:42):
Has to look good because you eat with your eyes,
and it has to silver carse taste good. So if
we're going to take out salt, we're going to put
in the different nerves and spices. So some of our
clients will say, oh my god, this tasted like a
gourmet meal because it has deep different spices that they've
never tasted before. And then the other thing about these
(13:04):
meals is, for most diet plans, you have three months
of unduplicated meals. So if you get turkey meat loaf
today and if you love it, I'm sorry, but you
won't see it for another ninety days. Oh how hard
we're going to get so.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Much for Yeah, other favorites, Yeah, other favorites.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
I've been able to taste a little bit of the
food here and there, and the food is absolutely delicious.
So again, if you know someone who is sick or
in need, or someone in your family, gosh, if my
mom lived down from the barrier, my mom, she's got
COPD and some asthma issues. I know COPD is also
on your list of peah. And again, whether it's someone
that's you elderly, or anyone that you know that maybe
(13:48):
sick or that could truly benefit from this program, this food.
It's all at no cost to the client. It's an
incredible gift. So if you are someone that you know
or someone in your family could really really use the
gift of Project Angel Food, please reach out and see
how it all works and apply. Have them apply at
Angelfood dot org. Also, if you have the time that
(14:09):
Richard said to volunteer and work in their kitchen temporarily
and Lincoln Heights, then officially we'll be back in Hollywood
before the end of the year hopefully.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
And then also fundraising is key.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
You do a bunch of events throughout the year, and
this is one of your big ees that we can
all buy a ticket and go to be a part
of the magic at the Angel Awards happening Saturday, September
the twenty seventh at Paramount Studios with Belinda Carlisle Live.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
Yes, this is our premiere ev end of the year
and this year, for the first time ever, we're doing
it at Paramount Studios. We usually do it in our
parking lot, but guess what, we don't have a parking
lot because we're in the temporary kitchen in our kitchen
is being renovated while we get everything ready, but it's
(14:56):
going to be really interesting. We're going to be near
the fountain right there at Paramount. We're going to have
the dinner outside, then we're going to go inside and
do the entire show in the theater there Paramount Theater.
We're also going to give you some popcorn and some
red vines. I think. Oh, so that's kind of fun.
(15:18):
We always had that little twist to it. So not
only will Blenda Carlisle open the show with a bang,
Caroline Ray is going to be our MC's hilarious.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
We are honoring Jennifer Tilly. Everyone loves Jennifer Tilly. And
I don't think we've announced this yet, but I'm going
to tell you Lisa. Kathy Hilton is going to give
Jennifer the award.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Oh very nice. And Kathy is a very generous woman, too.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Very generous, and I hope she raises her hand when
we asked for live auction.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Hey Kathy.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
Also, while you're here, where's that check book of your exactly?
Speaker 3 (16:01):
And we're honoring Cedar Sinai. They are wonderful partners. We
love them. It's just gonna be an amazing evening, the fun, laughter,
poignant stories and helping an incredible organization.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
And again, anyone you meet your Apologian angel food, I mean,
they just become a part of your family. I mean
you and I were friends before you start working there,
and now I love that you're working there, and now
you're the big boss because you're so good at what
you do and you're still good at bringing people together.
And just everyone that I meet through here just has
the biggest heart. And we need more of that in
this world with all the craziness that we face and
(16:36):
terrible things on the news. You know, we need to
stick together. Good people need to stick together and just
meet wonderful people through this organization. So I implore you
to volunteer to find out more, get hired as a driver.
They're always hiring drivers. Volunteer as a driver, and buy
a ticket for the Angel Wards. You'll meet so many
wonderful people. It's at the Paramount Studios and come on,
Blenda Carlisle, She's amazing. It's gonna be Saturday now, just
(16:58):
a few weeks Saturday, September twenty seventh. Takes in details
all right there for everything, takes a details about the event,
also about volunteering, also how to apply, all right there
at angelfood dot org.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
And on one new thing about volunteering, yes, is we're
opening up Saturdays. Okay, we usually just open on Sundays
through Friday, but we've got a stockpile meals for the move,
so we need volunteers to come in on Saturday. And
there's a great way online to book your date through
(17:33):
our calendar show.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
Okay, all right, great, and it's.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
All right there on high Tech, Lisa.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
What was needed, It was needed angelfood dot org. For
all the info angelfood dot org. And we can't wait
to see you at the Angel Awards for Project Angel
Food on Satday, September the twenty seventh.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
Richard, you love you, Thank you day.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
Richard. I love you and iHeart thank you so much.
